I’d suggest a Warior. I only played one briefly (I leveled a bunch of profs to 15-ish to try ‘em out), but it was very fast paced and fun, with so many fun weapon choices! The only reason I chose Necro instead was because I couldn’t stand the heavy armor looks on my cute little Sylvari. ^^;
I have heard that Necros can get draggy in later levels, but I love the survivability too much so far to give mine up.
Wish I could comment on thief, but after making an Elementalist as my first character, I’m not touching another profession that squishy in this game for awhile. If ever. :P
Best of luck to you!
I know a particular date wasn’t given, but I was really hoping the kits would be in the Halloween update.
I am having fun mining candy corn and carving pumpkins, but as I find the Halloween cosmetic offerings (rare weapon skins, town clothes) mostly a disappointment, a makeover kit would have been the highlight of the patch for me!
The fact that the kits were briefly added to the gem shop awhile ago by accident (though they weren’t ready) gave me hope that they just need some tweaking and truly are “coming soon”. Here’s hoping that they’ll sneak them in with a weekly update and we won’t have to wait until the next big update to get them!
I don’t really mind having some outfits as costumes/town clothes only. That way if they ever want to release truly silly stuff (like, say, a Quaggan costume, lol) it can be for non-combat situations only. And it gives them the opportunity to release “toys” with fun RP abilities, like the broom. However, I personally don’t give a hoot about town clothes, and wish they’d release more armor skins!
The costumes for Halloween look very nice, but I’d have been much happier if they’d have released light-medium-heavy armor skins in the gem shop instead with a spooky touch. Maybe a ragged witchy looking set for light armor, something gothic for the medium armor, and a scary set with skulls for heavy armor.
Hopefully, we will see more armor skins in the future. Nothing against costumes, but I find their use too limited for my purposes and I doubt I’ll ever buy one.
Yep, excited.
I love Halloween! As soon as I get home I’m gonna log on. Lucky I don’t have much school stuff on Mondays!
I’d imagine that if you don’t do the story, you can’t join an Order, so you can’t buy the unique Order armor. That’s pretty much all I can think of, aside from those nice chunks of XP.
And I may not have given up on my story, OP, but I know what you mean. I have come to somewhat dread story quests on my Elementalist. I ran into a teeth-gnashing, hair-pulling, impossible seeming quest at level 11 on mine, and I managed to die my way through it but I am wondering if I will run into another one that just frustrates me too much.
-snip-
I think we have different standards for “pretty”.
Haha, well, the one I posted is “pretty” too, but I was just trying to show how much of a difference sliders can make by using that particular pretty baby face (the default for male Elementalist).
Now these fellas, I would not consider pretty. These are the kind of looks I’m thinking of when I say that you can make guys that don’t look pretty and that look like, well, guys.
Ah, the human ladies and the gents in this game both tend to look very youthful and good looking, so kudos to Anet for at least not going the route of men = big ugly lunks and women = pretty young things.
I was playing around in the character creator and tried to make what is arguably the prettiest, most youthful looking face into a somewhat masculine looking character. I couldn’t bring myself to make him ugly, but at least he looks like a dude? xD I used that basic face for my human male character too, actually, but he’s undeniably a pretty boy so I won’t post him here.
Don’t care if town cloth or armor set, just want it to be ingame.
Haha, yeah, who am I kidding . . . I’d love it as armor, but would probably buy it if it was town clothes too just so my Ranger could look elegant and feminine at least while she’s in town. >.<
I believe that you can use the gem store armor skins more than once. As I understand it, for your 500 gems you are getting the skin and one transmutation for it, but after that you can just use transmutation stones to keep transmuting the appearance onto additional armor sets later. I pretty much think of them as armor skins that come with one set of “built in” transmutation stones.
It’s be nice if you could just transmute the skins onto armor as much as you like without any extra cost like the HoM skins, but IMHO having a unique skin with what is essentially unlimited transmutation stones to use with it would be too much to expect for 500 gems.
I don’t mind the dye being a different color depending on weight (cloth vs. metal, for example), but it is irritating when the colors don’t match when you use them on a single character. For example, I used the Apprentice gloves and boots with the Magician top and bottom, with light blue and purple dyes. The boots matched great when I dyed them either color. The gloves were significantly darker when I dyed them blue, but matched when I dyed them purple. -scratches head-
The un-dyeable parts drive me nuts, too. I love the Conjurer set, but the un-dyeable brown trim, not so much. >.<
I don’t really mind not having in in-combat, but I am really annoyed that we do not have it for out of combat!
I like to use a scepter/dagger for regular solo play and a staff for DE’s, and it is a pain to have to open up my inventory, find my staff, and equip it (while there may be a mass of mobs on my screen, at that), and then remember to switch it back after. And then do it again every time I do a DE!
It is great to hear that these items will be coming soon! -crosses fingers for Halloween update-
I hope that those prices are the “correct” prices for the kits. They seem quite reasonable IMHO and I could definitely see myself using them on a regular basis if they are indeed that affordable.
I agree, it seems absurd that you can change the color of your entire armor set but cannot change the color of your hair accessory. There are a couple of hairstyles that I really like, but won’t use because I don’t want to get stuck with it being the same color for my character’s entire existance, unless I shell out for a character recustomization when it is introduced.
I do understand the concept that these accessories are coded as a part of character creation, and so may as well be, to the game, as unchangeable as eye color and height. However, this is just plain silly. IMHO, if they could not allow us to dye our hair accessories, they should not have included a bunch of hair styles with such obvious hair accessories! As it is now, there are some really cute hair styles that are completely “ruined” for me because they have a headband or a pretty bow.
At the very least, they should have included a wider range of colors you can choose to dye your hair accessory. There are a lot of hair colors that you can’t match very well. And that doesn’t work well for some of the larger accessories anyway, as hair accessories that are designed to blend in with one’s hair color (yes, these are quite common IRL) tend to be more unobtrusive and simple in general. Generally speaking, if I want a pretty bow for my hair, I don’t want it to blend in with the color of my hair and be unnoticeable.
Anyhow, I hope they change this! I would really love to change one of my human female’s hair to that cute wavy one with the bangs and the headband . . . if only the headband wouldn’t be stuck as either a color that didn’t match my gear or a color that kinda sorta but not really blended in with my hair.
I understand where you’re coming from, but I’d personally disagree. Basically, I find PvE very easy on certain professions, but a lot harder on others. Not too hard, certainly, but the difference in difficulty almost feels like playing the game on different difficulty settings.
For example: Warrior? I mow through mobs, no sweat. Necromancer? I can handle a lot, but can’t go running into danger all willy-nilly. Elementalist? Better pay attention and be very careful if I want to avoid death! (examples only, YMMV)
So if they make PvE harder, it will make the “easy” profs seem more challenging, but it may also make the “harder” ones hard enough to edge into the frustrating category for lot of people.
Just my 2 copper, though.
I’m sorry you aren’t happy with Elementalist.
I get where you’re coming from though.
After trying other professions, I find my Ele kinda frustrating to play because he dies so much easier and just feels less powerful. I feel that Eles perform very well in groups and offer excellent support, but that doesn’t help me much as I am a primarily solo PvE player!
But who knows, maybe it is because I am lower level, or because I am not awesome enough to play Ele. -shrugs- Still, Elementalists just seem to be a PITA to play compared to other classes yet doesn’t offer PITA-worthy results. I still play mine sometimes anyway though (because I love the concept), just not as a main. I play my Necromancer a lot more lately.
I love this set, so elegant! Pity it isn’t available in game.
Crossing my fingers that it gets added to the gem shop as a skin, and is not a costume.
I can understand the concept of town clothes being separate from combat clothes, to keep the armor types looking distinct and keep any future “silly” outfits for non-combat use .
But . . . the pirate outfit looks like it would be perfect as medium armor. If I saw someone wearing it and didn’t know any better, I’d just think, “wow, that’s some nice looking medium armor!” I am sad that I can’t get a gorgeous top like that for my ranger to wear while out in the world adventuring.
This is subjective of course, but I am on Tarnished Coast and I love it. There is definitely RP here, I see it every night I play. Adds a nice atmosphere IMHO. I am mostly in the lower level areas now though, not sure how things are at high levels.
I don’t do WvW but my friend on the same server does and he says that we are actually pretty decent (which surprised me ‘cause we’re the unofficial RP server, lol). If you want a top WvW server though I don’t think we are it.
I’m on the fence about this. I don’t PvP, but if I did, I think it would be nice to not have different skills than in PvE. And keeping the skills the same probably makes it more appealing for new PvP’ers to just jump right in.
However, it seems obvious to me that powerful in PvP =/= powerful in PvE. I think Mesmers are a great example of this. I hear they are one of the best PvP classes, but compared to my other characters (except my Ele) my Mesmer seems kind of lackluster in PvE. Not horrid, but certainly not “nerf worthy” IMHO. From the PvE perspective it is mystifying to think that my Mesmer would get a nerf before, say, my Warrior or Necromancer. Yet in PvP, it probably makes sense.
How exciting, I love Halloween! New events sound awesome, and I’m crossing my fingers that there will be something pretty for my characters to wear aside from town clothes.
I love seeing the view from vistas, and take a nice screenshot of each! But I usually only watch it on the first character I do it with, unless it is especially breathtaking and its been awhile since I ran a character through that particular area.
Checking out the weapon gallery a lot of hammers do seem a bit on the dainty side, so it’d be nice if there were a few more really big ones in the game.
I do love having my Warrior tote around a gigantic hammer. Yes, it unrealistic that my skinny little guy could lift such a sizable hunk of metal, let alone swing it around, but the fact that he is a plant that has leaves for hair and glows in the dark is also unrealistic!
Having recently made a Warrior, I say this: they are popular for a reason! This is purely from a PvE perspective, mind you.
On my Warrior, I can take multiple mobs without a sweat. I don’t have to run around like a nut (i.e. kiting) to avoid death if I get multiple mobs or even one particularly hard hitter. I kill stuff at a respectable speed. I can go through caves, mob-infested POI’s, and skill challenges without other people around to help. In short: it is simply a more efficient class than some others are and I get a lot more “bang for my buck” as far as effort I put in vs. how effective my character is.
Yes, I do enjoy my other classes, but after an hour or two of Epic Battles with normal mobs and waiting for other players to come along so I can do a certain thing on my Ele . . . I really love playing my Warrior.
I certainly do see a ton of heavy armor wearers, though I don’t find it strange at all.
(edited by Passiflora.2047)
I noticed this too, the two times I did this fight I spent so much time rez’ing people! Which is kinda lousy ‘cause that doesn’t seem to count as “contributing” to the event. >.<
Her ability that pulls you in and (near?) one-shots you is what made her so tough I think. If I didn’t activate death shroud and run away within a couple of seconds of being pulled, I’d die every time. And if I’d been playing my Elementalist (a lot squishier) that move would probably have simply one-shot me.
Not fun for a newbie, particularly because for a good chunk of the time I’d imagine that there are not enough people around to make this fight easy enough so as not to be a wallet-squeezing death fest. Honestly, since I’ve seen the fight already I’ll probably skip this event on my next character unless there are a lot of people around when I encounter it. It’s just not worth the waypoint and repair costs (to me), otherwise.
Y’know, I can’t help but find this kind of funny. I got frustrated by how weak my Elementalist feels compared to my Necro and Ranger, but I love playing light armor classes so I finally talked myself into rolling a Mesmer just a few days ago. I only do PvE, and was finding her kinda meh for DE’s and against multiple mobs but really good for 1vs1 — I actually solo’d a couple of skill challenges with her!
. . . so, of course, Mesmers got nerfs. I’m sorry, my fellow Mesmers! I must be cursed to play squishy mediocre casters. If they start bringing out the nerfs for Necros, I think I shall cry (not literally, lol).
Y’know, I feel kinda dumb now, ‘cause all this time I have been taking off items before transmuting them as I figured you couldn’t transmute items while they were being worn. ^^; I’d always just switch to town clothes while I was transmuting so my character wouldn’t have to stand around in his/her undies.
I imagine the change could be confusing though if you were used to transmuting items you were wearing! And that is really awful about lost transmutation stones.
While I don’t mind the idea of there being a few ridiculously expensive sets that are meant to be prestige items, I do mind having those sets be cultural gear.
Why? Well, by making the Tier 3 cultural gear prohibitively expensive for most players, they are essentially reducing the number of cultural gear sets that are available for those that don’t want to grind a lot, aren’t good at “playing the market”, and what have you. This might not be a big deal for some races, but with races like Sylvari where they have very distinctive racial attire, this is very disappointing.
If they want to have one of the cultural sets be super expensive level 80 gear, IMHO they should give each race an additional cultural armor “tier” that is inexpensive and low level as well. And by inexpensive and low level, I’m talking something for your level 15 characters, not mid level sets that costs 2+ gold.
Just my 2 copper.
I’m not fond of race or sex changes – just me, I guess, but I wouldn’t want to see those implemented. Maybe because I can see them being exploited, unless there was a massive cooldown on the changes.
Okay, this is probably a dumb question and I am missing something here, but . . . how could a sex change for your character be exploited? I am racking my brain here but I can’t think of anything in the story/game that is related to your character’s gender. Heck, my female human noble even got the “I’ll be the envy of the party coming with the hero of Shaemoor on my arm” line (not an exact quote) from the lovely Countess Anise just like my male noble did.
When making a human female character, I was unhappy to notice that the particular face I wanted to use has an issue with “iris size” not working correctly. Instead of the slider changing, well, the iris size, it changes the size of the whole eye (eye size scale? I think Sylvari have this option?).
I have included pictures to show the problem. The first two show how iris size is supposed to work, and how it works on other faces. The last two show how it is working incorrectly on this particular human female face.
It would be great to know if there is a fix coming for this. Pretty please?
-sylvan pup eyes- I’d really like to make a character with this face, but I want to make the irises bigger for the cute factor and I currently cannot.
Oh, and I don’t think it is worth making a whole new thread for this (since it is in the same area of character creation, and is a very minor detail) but see the eye color used in the pics? It is the 4th from the left in the top row, and it is called . . . “Light Blue”. A small thing, but figured I’d mention it while I was at it.
They both look nice! <3 I am partial to the first set though, as I am not a big fan of the straight high waist pants + teeny cropped top look.
I’d love to see some sort of auto-loot. FFXIV has it (even with their current horrid engine and coding), and it is very convenient. I think the auto loot system works pretty well, with a “loot list” tab that is useful for when your inventory is full so you have a few minutes to clear space before your loot disappears.
At the very least, some sort of “AOE loot” would work as well. Y’know, press F once and loot all the shinies in the area, instead of having to move around the pile of bandit corpses while spamming F.
So, I was running around in Hoelbrak and eventually noticed that some of the Norn NPC kids use human faces! I’m sure people have noticed this, but it was new to me and I thought it was hilarious, especially because the two I found are the faces my human characters use. I have attached pics for your viewing pleasure, in case you haven’t been to Hoelbrak yet — don’t mind the sapling there, I haven’t been to Hoelbrak on my humans yet. ^^;
This got me thinking, any other funny things about humans like this that I somehow missed in my first month of game play?
@Lady Vireo
Thank you so much, that worked! I’m so glad, I thought I couldn’t get my biography item again.
. . . now if only they would fix the bug making the Elementalist’s starter gem invisible when you transmute it. xD
I’d also love an “off” button! Preferably per character though, unless they can make the on/off switch register without you having to log out of the game and back in like it is when you change your audio language.
Last I tried it, when you change the audio language, your character’s dialogue and NPC dialogue is, essentially, “off” for normal game play (not sure about cut scenes). You’ll just see the NPC chat bubbles. All other sound, including character grunts, squeaks, etc, are still there, but spoken words are gone until you log out and back in again (could be character select? not sure), at which time you will hear everything in the language you chose.
So, if you’re being driven nuts by the NPC chatter or your character claiming she can outrun a centaur, just switch your audio language whenever you log in.
Not the best solution for me though, as I can’t stand my humans’ dialogue but I do like to hear my Sylvari male’s.
I have gotten bronzes for events I either didn’t know were going on or events that I have seen pass me by. Of these possible conclusions I could have made:
1. This is a bug, oh no!
2. I’d better not accidentally not participate in events anymore, I might be exploiting!
3. Oh, that DE involved killing x type of mob, and I have killed several of those in the past few minutes. That must’ve counted towards as DE participation.
I went with the third one.
Though I don’t make a habit of it, there have been occasions where I have been in an area with a DE nearby and for some reason have not participated in it — maybe I had done it 3 times already that day, or maybe I was just really intent on finishing whatever I was doing with my skills/traits or what have you. Yet I can’t ever recall being awarded a medal for standing around by an event doing nothing!
And do DE’s really scale to the number of people in the area? According to the wiki:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dynamic_event
events scale up or down according to the number of people actively participating. If that isn’t the case, IMHO it should be!
Oh, and regarding the RP’ers the OP mentioned — they did sound quite rude and I am sorry you had to deal with that.
But my first thought was, maybe they’ve been there before while the DE was going or had been there long enough to have the DE repeat.
RP’er 1: Oh no! The krait are kidnapping the villagers, we must save them from slavery!
RP’er 2: Again?
RP’er 3: I don’t know why we bother rescuing these people, this is the fifth time this week!
RP’er 2: And we’ll just have to rescue them again tomorrow.
RP’er 1: . . . so, more tea, then?
Just to be clear, I’m not a RP’er, but thought I’d play devil’s advocate here. No offence is intended, and I certainly believe that there is no excuse for being rude, or for calling someone a troll for no reason!
(edited by Passiflora.2047)
Hard question, I like both! Divinity’s Reach is probably my favorite though — more convenient layout for me. And it is probably because my character in the Norn area is Sylvari, but it doesn’t seem like my character feels “at home” in Hoelbrak compared to Divinity’s Reach.
I find most underwater areas to be deathtraps to start with. Mobs attacking from all angles, high respawn, lots of aggro, lower visibility at times, possibly weaker feeling characters. So adding a boss to the area is sometimes enough for me to say nope, not worth it, I’ll probably die and there probably won’t be enough people there because . . . underwater is such a deathtrap.
While I do enjoy underwater areas, I find the whole set up more difficult and my characters generally feel weak underwater — my Necro has a bunch of close range AOE’s (gah), and my Ele, well, feels about the same as on land which is fragile and squishy. Basically, adding a boss to an already dangerous situation is probably not going to entice me to go towards it for a questionable reward. xD
Though if there are enough people (and, there often are), I’ll often join in on underwater boss fights.
Totally agree, OP. I like to play with others, chat, etc, but I also like to spend time playing by myself, that is, without any sort of social “strings” attached. And being a rather private person, I don’t like the idea of others being able to see everything I do, and every character I have, no matter what!
TBH the social set up in this game has made me rather anti-social. I feel like it is “all or nothing”: have friends and a guild, be social ALL THE TIME, or don’t have friends and a guild, and play alone all the time. :/
I’d like to see the login from the BWE’s come back, so you can log in as invisible instead of changing your status to invisible after everyone already saw you log in. But what I’d really love is a way to create “hidden” alts. Really, I’d be ok with not being able to login as invisible, I am used to that. But no alts that no one knows for when I want to be left alone? It really bugs me.
To elaborate on the title, I think it would be wonderful if they added a new level of cultural armor sets for each race, but not sold like the current cultural armor sets are.
Why, you ask? Well, if you play a human you may think this is a silly idea, but for some other races, I think it would be a good idea to allow players to dress like their race from a low level, not having to wait until they are level 35 and/or have 2+ gold to spend on it. This provides a fun and more immediate thing to look forward to on a newbie character, and also could encourage higher level players to purchase the existing cultural armor pieces as it will have additional, affordable mix ’n match possibilities.
To be clear, I am mostly thinking about Sylvari here, because their racial garb is the most distinct, but this would be a fun addition for all races.
Suggestions for implementing it:
- Simpler than the other cultural armor, nothing elaborate.
- Level 10-ish, possibly without shoulder and/or head pieces
- Sold by karma vendor(s) — spread around the starter area, or on the first or last heart quest in the area
- Blue quality
- Priced higher than the other gear sold by the karma vendors, but not prohibitively so
Ideally, it would not be difficult to obtain if you are playing in your race’s starter area, exploring, and participating in the events you come across. But not so easy that the karma required is a mere pittance to your low level character. Or heck, they could stick it on a vendor for a price in silver that seems expensive but still doable to a level 10 character (yes, I know, “you can get gold and karma easy!” – but I’m talking about level 10 characters, not level 80’s in Orr!).
Just my little suggestion. I have seen many others request something similar, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to throw in my 2 copper for how it could be implemented.
Any other opinions are welcome, please feel free to post! ^^

The starter gear seems to be available from armor merchants, with the exception of certain pieces that you got to select in character creation. For example, I have not seen the Necromancer’s starter mask or the Elementalist’s starter forehead gem for sale anywhere, but you can buy their starter top/pants/boots at a vendor easily.
Wish I’d know that when I started out with my Elementalist . . . I saw the starter armor on the vendor and assumed I could get the whole set back if I deleted it, but sadly the head piece seems exclusive to character creation.
The run I think looks a little silly on both genders, but I find it rather endearing. But then I see my Sylvari as cute rather than elegant or tough, so it might bug me if I wanted a character like that.
As for the female idle animation, while I wouldn’t be as harsh as the OP, I mostly agree with the sentiment. I find the frequent grin/glare to be annoying, though IMHO it really depends on the face you choose. I chose a face that already has a slight smile built-in, and on that face the animation is a bit too much for me. I haven’t had this issue with my male Sylvari, as their facial expression doesn’t seem to be all over the map in their idle animation. They move a lot, but no random big grins or anything.
I recall seeing a Sylvari NPC named Wysteria, so it can’t be that unusual as far as lore goes.
Also, flower and plant based names are not uncommon as human names — Lily, Flora, Rose, Willow, etc — so I am not surprised that they are popular as Sylvari names. Especially as this is a fantasy setting, where nature-inspired names seem more common in general.
Just my 2 copper on the matter!
Wow, everyone looks so different! Here’s my cute ickle Necromancer alt-possibly-to-become-main. Hope to get him some tier 1/2 cultural armor when he’s higher level.
@Ursan (sorry, quote went poof!)
Someone posted that picture on a fan site forum, I don’t remember exactly where I saw it but I bookmarked it asap. I don’t know who made it, and I don’t know if there is a website associated with it, sorry. ;_; If there was one I knew of, I’d have been sure to link it, because whoever made that pic deserves cookies!
@Raukcaran
Glad that was helpful! I like that set a lot, tasteful and good looking.
And I know what you mean about the cultural armor prices, I have my eye on a tier 2 and a tier 3 set, but ouch, expensive!
I’d love to see this! I hope they would add multiple “tiers”, so the person that wants to change their character’s hair color from blond to brown doesn’t have to pay the same as the person that wants to change their character from a cute little blond woman to a tough looking muscular brown haired man.
Something like this would be nice:
Simple Ticket — colors only (hair, skin, eye)
Basic Ticket — colors, plus hair style
Deluxe Ticket — everything for your race, including gender but excluding story stuff
Maybe have the first two in-game for gold, as well as in the gem store?
If they offer gender changes, it would be nice if they also offered a separate name change service. But, some characters have more unisex sounding names and so I’m sure there are people that would like to change their character’s gender even without a name change.
Depending on the price, I can see myself swapping my Elementalist’s gender and eye color occasionally, and trying out new hair colors or styles on my Ranger from time to time.
With the TP lacking previews, it is hard to tell what gear looks like. ;_; That said, I did a lot of research on armor looks before making my characters, and IMHO there is a good amount of more modest and practical looking gear for female heavy armor wearers; even more than there is really skimpy sexy stuff. I am sure I am missing a lot of options though as my only heavy armor wearer is a low level male.
Here are some suggestions aside from the Vigil armor or transmuting your old set. ^^
1. Level 80 crafted set — believe it is called Draconic (exotic?), and it definitely doesn’t have that “metal bikini” style going on.
2. Cultural sets – any tier for human, or tier 1 for Norn (personally I think the tier 2 human set looks awesome).
3. Different lower level sets — the tier 3/4 crafted sets offer good coverage and look pretty great IMHO! I also noticed a karma set on one of the Diessa Plateau heart vendors looks very practical and full covereage. Heck, you may have been wearing one of those, but looking at the armor galleries there seem to be quite a few options that aren’t skimpy.
Crafted armor sets (not my pic): http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/4756/craftedarmorsv2.jpg
You’re probably aware of most of these, but just in case not, I thought it couldn’t hurt to mention them. ^^ I am always looking for the perfect armor for my characters, so I wish you luck in finding a look you like!
I kinda see what you mean about guilds, OP. I’ve gotten several random invites via /whisper but have yet to actually join one. Finding one that is a good fit for me seems to be a daunting task. I need to find somewhere with server specific forums.
And the issues with multiple guilds reminds me of FFXIV, where you can have multiple linkshells (as close as you can get to guilds atm) but compounded as linkshells are very simple with low functionality and stuff like influence wasn’t a factor. You join a linkshell, they have crests you can wear to “represent” them, they have a linkshell chat, and there are ranks, but that is pretty much it.
IMHO, FFXIV’s solution to this might be nice for GW2. They are making it so you can have multiple linkshells, but only one free company (aka guild). This way, people can keep up with friends in multiple circles, but give their loyalty primarily to a single group. Basically, you have only one guild for influence and stuff but can have multiple not quite guilds for keeping up with friends, RP, crafting chatter, etc.
Though I must say, when I read the title of this post, I was like, “what the heck is this guy talking about!” The way friending works in this game actually makes me rather anti-social due to the lack of anonymity , as though I like to play and chat with other people sometimes, I often want to play by myself. But in this game, I can’t have my anonymous alt that no one knows about, nooooo. Someone friends one of my characters, they see me when I’m on any of them! This actually happened to me already when someone I don’t even know friended one of my alts and then /whispered me on another character asking me about the name of said alt. >.<
And the “invisible” option is rubbish atm, as you can’t choose it until after you have already logged on, and people aren’t stupid. So I just run around with no friends, because it feels like I must either be social all the time or not at all. ^^;
I notice complaining in every profession forum, though some forums seem to have more discussion of different types (“hey, warhorns are awesome!”, “which ranged weapon should I pick?”, etc) mixed in than others. No profession is perfect of course, but IMHO there are ones that really need tweaks and/or bug fixes a lot more than others do.
That said, I really like my Ranger. Sure, the pet AI isn’t perfect, but gosh I love having pets. I love animals/pets IRL, so it just tickles me to have animal battle companions. On my first character, as I traveled around, I’d see juvenile mobs and think, “if I was a Ranger, I could just take that with me!”
So I made a Ranger, and now I can.
I have this issue with my Elementalist and her starter water head gem thingy too (Glacial Eye). After I transmuted it at level 10, it simply didn’t show up on my character anymore except on the character selection screen. I tried equipping a different head piece, and then putting it back on, but it still won’t show up.
So, I stashed the transmuted item in my bank and am hoping it will get fixed, because this is clearly a bug. I have certainly not done anything to lose the appearance of the Glacial Eye, and when they fix this bug, I expect that mine will become properly visible, transmuted or not!
This is a really disappointing bug though, because I don’t think there is any way to get the starting headpiece anywhere else (?), and it is a waste of transmutation stones. I may as well have just equipped the mask I bought for stats, and hid it.
