Is Basilisk Venom worthy of being an elite?

in Thief

Posted by: Pentalic.5409

Pentalic.5409

I somewhat agree with your assessment, but instead of revoking it’s Elite Skill status, I’d much prefer a slight rebalancing to the skill instead.
What I would propose would be this:
Keep the cast time and 2 charges on activation – these are both integral to the current balance formula they have going (cast time means you can’t interrupt or take advantage of a situation that you were not prepared for, and 2 charges adds the element of mastery, where you need to pick and choose how to appropriately attack enemies).
Add a “slight stacking” to duration, up to a max of between 1.25 and 1.75 seconds. This will make running BV while alone feel a tad more rewarding, and will make BV feel more useful in Venom Share builds when you have to assume that all BV charges will be used up within half a second on the same target.

It would be really nice to see a slight change to BV. It’s a great skill thematically as well as in execution, and it would be a shame to see it fall from favor in the new rising meta.

Flanking Strike shouldn't be a split skill

in Thief

Posted by: Pentalic.5409

Pentalic.5409

I’m really confused as to why you think this would be a positive change for Flanking Strike…
Even if, for some reason, it was made back into a single skill with no split, the total cast time would have to remain unchanged to maintain the current balance state, so it’s not like the ability would go off quicker to help you get the damage you’re looking for.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, if it WERE to be made into a single skill, you wouldn’t be able to FS, then blink somewhere or move to change targets before LS (which is a great option for PvP Thieves, as you most likely want to rip a boon from a Guardian over another Thief).

All in all, I – as well as what I assume is a large part of the Thief audience – would probably not like them to condense FS and LS back into one again… Very little upside (if any) while removing an element of skill and mastery.

Before Stealth gets Nerfed Again

in Thief

Posted by: Pentalic.5409

Pentalic.5409

I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about the possibility of stealth being nerfed again due to chain-stealthing thieves. Although I agree the combo-finisher tactic can be cheesy at times, I don’t think stealth needs to be nerfed again. So I have a suggestion on how to adjust stealth:

Anet sets a limitation, say 10 seconds of stealth in a 30-45 second period. If a thief has used up all 10 seconds of stealth-time before the 30-45 second marker they get a revealed debuff for, say, 15-20 seconds. If the allotted 10 seconds of stealth-time isn’t used up in 30-45 seconds, the timer resets. This way a thief cant constantly stay stealthed unless they are trying to get away because most fights will last longer than 30-45 seconds. Also, for the thieves that don’t spam stealth to play they won’t get penalized for other ppls tactics. This would make the players that have to rely on spam-stealthing rethink when and how they use their stealth just like when and how to use initiative.

I’m not saying the timing is right on this suggestion but the overall Idea is one that I wouldn’t mind being in place.

I like the idea, and I think SOMETHING like this should happen. The reason why a system like this hasn’t already been implemented is that Thieves have access to traits and gear choices that automatically stealth you. Let’s say a Thief has skillfully used 9 seconds of his stealth and is almost at the point where his 10 seconds will reset then BOOP! Last Refuge kicks in and he has Revealed because of factors out of his control.

People often forget that Revealed was not a mechanic that launched with the game. It was added later to balance Thieves (primarily in PvP). Some skills have yet to be updated to better revolve around this mechanic. I often think that it would be best if Anet did away with the Revealed mechanic and overhauled stealth and Thief traits to better accommodate the new Guild Wars 2 environment (as opposed to as it used to be. The game has changed quite a bit.)

After forcing myself to run without Signet of Shadows, I find that I can’t go back to using it. I think you would find the same, especially since you’ve invested 20 into Acrobatics. I suggest trying Ice Drake Venom in its place. Chilled is one of the harder conditions to clense and you already have Residual Venoms.

Also, I would advise putting Fleet Shadow in the place of Power of Inertia. Might on dodge might not be as useful to you as getting into position quicker from stealth to land your sneak attack at the right time and from the right place.

The problem with Last Refuge is that it was designed for a game without the Revealed mechanism, as was GW2 at launch. Yeup! Also, if you notice someone placing the trap (you probably won’t because they’re most likely invisible [in which case they are a Thief and you should post a thread stating the persons in-game name so we can all call him/her a traitor to the class]) you should immediately start running away. The cast time is 4 seconds and the person is rooted in place. Another thing to note is that any NPC Thief you call in using Ambush Trap or Thieves Guild will trigger the trap, and since you would be within range you would also get the debuff. I have not tested this last statement, the knowledge comes from a friend who says he has also tried it on a mesmer with clones.

Obviously YOU have never listened to State of the Game, or been in any stream where dvs openly comment on skills and tooltips. Jon Peters himself said that this was a bug they were working to fix, as Shadow Return was never meant to have infinite range.

We shouldn’t call this a nerf so much as a bug fix. Shadow Return was never intended to be a infinite range shadowstep-back. It now requires you to know more about positioning and the ins and outs of the skills (ie. being able to put it down when not targeting anyone. This becomes extremely useful now that the range is what it should be).

Pentalic.5409

That’s not a bad idea really. ANet said in the sPvP chats that thief base damage was too low which is why they have to gear up with little to no defense. And they got too strong of a burst at the same time?

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a slight reduction in backstab damage and maybe HS to go with a sharp increase in dagger autoattack damage.

I think ANet will accomplish this in a slightly different way:
By upping the base damage of ALL Thief weapons skills, then readjusting the “attack” or power drop off rate.
If, say, Heartseeker has a base damage of A and a attack coefficient of B, changing the formula to A+ and B- would not change anything at all in certain builds, while other low power-stacking builds would benefit greatly.

I just hope they don’t go A+ and B—-
That might ruin spike damage completely…

There have been countless threads about Conquest being the only game mode. I would simply like to hear everyone’s opinion about a possible King of the Hill game mode.

“The Hill” would be a capture point that can be placed at various locations throughout the map, and would change locations at timed intervals.
The objective would be to capture and hold “The Hill” for your team.
The nature of this game mode would promote team fights at specific locations, while allowing for smaller skirmishes to occur at other choke points to keep the opposing team away from “The Hill”.

There is a cap at 12 secs but yes you can heartseeker or cluster bomb through smoke screen or black powder or sit in shadow refuge. You can indefinitely stealth by spamming black powder > heartseeker with certain traits.

This isn’t true, personally I’ve gotten up to 15 seconds, just in this thread someone has said they got to 17, and I’ve seen two thieves manage to get several minutes of stealth.

It is true. I’d love to see you prove me wrong (IGN: Lux Fortuna).

does the stealth stack?

in Thief

Pentalic.5409

Stealth stacks in duration. Through my MANY experiments to elaborate on this, I don’t think I have ever seen the duration on the Stealth buff go past 17 seconds (keep in mind that all my tests were done solo and without aid of any other thief)

If you want to stay in Stealth forever (can only be done out of combat) without the use of the d/p set, here are my directions:

Prerequisites – Master of Deception [Deception skills recharge 20% faster] (from Shadow Arts), Infusion of Shadow [Gain 2 initiative whenever you use a skill that stealths you] (from Shadow Arts)
Optional Traits – Patience [Regain initiative faster while in Stealth] (from Shadow Arts), Preparedness [Increases maximum initiative by 3] (from Trickery),

Utility Skills – Blinding Powder, Shadow Refuge, Smokescreen
Heal – Hide in Shadows
Weapon sets – Shortbow / X

Rotation:
Smokescreen – ClusterBomb at feet x5 – wait until Stealth is almost up – Shadow Refuge – wait – Black Powder – wait – Smokescreen – ClusterBomb at feet x5 – wait – (this is where the “repeat” starts, however you may need to add in a Hide in Shadows to stay in Stealth permanently)

Yep, the duration isn’t stacked so you have to wait a bit before applying the second strike if you want to optimize that trait. This is why Thieves Guild is much better for Venom Sharing builds than Basilisk Venom.

I respectfully disagree. A thief running Basilisk Venom with a Venom Share build AND a coordinated team is basically unstoppable. If you manage to share Basilisk Venom with 4 teammates, you can each take a turn playing whack-a-mole.

Pentalic.5409

Alright, I made another version of the evasion build that has been tearing it up in HotJoin. I know this means nothing for tPvP, but it only a testing grounds.
Here is the build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQNAsYVlYmSO3dS6E95ExmidmTvHgdkittenTBX1KA-TsAA2CnIkRJjTGjMSZsyMIYhxEDA

Once again, for those too lazy to click links, here is a rundown:
0/20/0/20/30
Major Traits:
Critical Strikes – Side Strike, Combo Critical Chance
Acrobatics – Vigorous Recovery, Assassin’s Reward
Trickery – Flanking Strikes, Bountiful Theft, Hastened Replenishment

Weapons:
S/D and Shortbow

Gear:
Balthazar Runes, Knight’s Amulet (Berzerker’s Jewel)

Premise:
High evasion without sacrificing utility. The damage is not as significant as other builds, but you will still do quite a bit…
Balthazar Runes work well with Withdraw, and synergize with the Condition Damage from the Trickery line. It’s also very fun to Withdraw (wait for animation to be almost complete) then shadowstep, steal, infiltrator’s signet, or shadow return to your opponent for a heal, vigor, 4 initiative, and burning. If you Steal, vigor will end up being 25 seconds, which will tie into your next vigor in 15 seconds. Basically, you will always have vigor, you will always have energy, and you will always have initiative. Your damage is based off your initiative, so you will always have damage. You heal for initiative, so you will always be healing. There are 3 stunbreaks on your utility line, so you’ll never be locked down. There is no need for the 2 S/D sets since the weapon swap sigils don’t really have a place in the build, making room for the utility the shortbow brings. You have 21k HP, making you able to take a few hits, even if you are evading pretty much everything.

What do you think?

Advice for my evasion build

in Thief

Posted by: Pentalic.5409

Pentalic.5409

Hello all,

I have been toying around with evasion-based builds for awhile now and have come up with something that seems very viable to me. There is only one problem – Runes of the Mesmer do not work in sPvP.

Here is the build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQRAsY8alYmSO3dS6E95Ex2jdmTe6fAs9M4qVB-TwAA1CnIkSJlTKjUSpsSNIYRw+j5HA

For those of you too lazy to copy/paste or click links, here’s a run-down:
0/30/0/25/15
Major Traits:
Critical Strikes – Side Strike, Combo Critical Chance, Executioner
Acrobatics – Vigorous Recovery, Quick Recovery
Trickery – Flanking Strikes

Weapons:
S/D and S/P
Sigil of Accuracy and Energy in both sets

Gear:
Mesmer Runes, Soldier’s Amulet (Berserker’s Jewel)

I guess what I’m looking for is advice pertaining to Rune and Sigil choices. The only thing that worries me with this build is that I won’t be critting as much as I hope (even with all the passive bonuses to crit and dual attacks)
The premise of the build is high evasion rate mixed with good damage and survivability. Stealth is not an option for this build, as I will hopefully be able to hold a point.
I was also thinking of switching out Quick Recovery for Assassin’s Reward, but I’m not positive if I need the extra healing or if my initiative regen can equal more evades, which results in less damage taken. It’s really a tradeoff that I’m not too familiar with yet.
Rune possibilities as I see them are: Runes of the Thief (I don’t need the Condition Damage AT ALL, that’s why I’m so hesitant, but the 10% damage on FS/LS is kinda awesome), Runes of Lyssa, Runes of the Eagle. I also considered Runes of the Warrior, but I don’t think the faster endurance regen is worth the crit rate drop…

Any advice?

Edit: Maybe I’ll go with Lyssa runes and use Basilisk Venom like Jumper did… not sure…

2nd Edit: Please refer to my later post showing a slightly different build. I think it has much more potential than this pseudo-Jumper one.

3rd Edit: And by “much more potential” I am not saying that Jumper’s build doesn’t (it clearly does), I am simply stating that it has more potential than a half azsed Jumper build. Weird how the build is now named “The Jumper Build”.

4th Edit: I only bipassed the word filter because it also omits the word “half” before a**.

While that is true, one could also say that if I didn’t Steal anything, Steal should not be placed back on its cooldown.

Possible issue with Bountiful Theft

Pentalic.5409

Hello all,

Has anyone noticed how the Tier 2 Major Trait Bountiful Theft does not give the player and all nearby allies vigor for 15 seconds if the player does not actually steal from another player?
I use Bountiful Theft quite a bit in conjunction with Thrill of the Crime. I usually Steal when relocating (targeted on nothing) just for Swiftness. I noticed yesterday that I should also be allocated Vigor on top of the 3 from TotC. Imagine a Thief traited in Acrobatics and Trickery: Swiftness on evade. 3 evades. Steal for vigor for 15 seconds and swiftness for 10. Vigor = more evade = more swiftness. I would like to see this addressed as I can be moving around maps much quicker with perma-swiftness.

Bountiful Theft says this:
Stealing grants you and all nearby allies vigor for 15 seconds. Up to two boons are also ripped from your target and granted to nearby allies.

After the first day of the new traps being in place, I must say that I don’t mind them as much as I thought I would. Most commanders get mad if you’re wasting supply on them, so they are pretty much reserved for small groups or singles running around.
That being said, it would be HIGHLY beneficial for the Thief community to come together and share knowledge about our other useful disengage mechanic: Shadowsteps.
As mentioned in the first post, do not be afraid to post your shadowstep spots, it could end up saving one of our thief brethen from certain doom. Why just this afternoon I was being chased by a necromancer and his warrior buddy when I came to a low hanging bridge near Orgath Uplands (Eternal Battlegrounds). I shadowstepped the underside of the bridge as we were passing under it, placing me on top. I then switched to my shortbow and clusterbombed them to oblivion. Unfortuately, oblivion isn’t what it used to be, and I had to Infiltrator’s Arrow back down and up several times, juking them, before I could do enough damage to kill them both. Come to think of it, they were kinda terrible. Maybe I’ve just come to expect that now…

ShadowStep Stomp

I try to avoid using it since you either waste Steal of an actual shadowstep skill (Infiltrator’s Strike doesn’t count since any weapon based shadowstep is not instant cast).
If you’re really tired of CnD + stomp, or any-form-of-stealth + stomp, then try this:
Start the stomp – Use Shadowstep to get away – when the stomp is almost complete, use shadow return. Works against all classes because, if timed right, there really isn’t a counter for it. They’ll see you for a half a split second before they die.

Edit: Infiltrator’s Signet works well against other Thieves that try to 2 away from you while downed. Then again, so does any other shadowstep or Steal.
If you’re running Signet of Shadows, a perfectly timed blind is great against anyone.

How high can YOU stack Revealed?

My game client is updating and I thought I would come to the forums to see all the news about the anti-stealth traps. I’m pretty disappointed in Anet for not coming up with a much cooler and in-depth final product. For example. they could have made traps an actual physical object that can be placed or hidden around the WvWvW maps, and could be disarmed (with the drawback being that disarming a trap would take a long channel time). It would have made for a fun AND balanced addition.

Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to ask if triggering multiple traps will result in the Revealed debuff stacking in duration. If that is that case, let’s make a friendly competition to see WHO CAN STACK THE MOST REVEALED!!! xD

Stealth "ripples"

in Thief

stealth is not good in high level spvp ripples arnt going to help that

That may be true, but if we found a way to make all the non-Thief players stop QQ’ing about Stealth, we might catch a break from Anet and get Stealth-capping back.
There could also be a mechanic that allowed players to see “more” of the “ripples” when the Thief is at a control point…

Improvisation -- What is a bundle ?

The GW2 wiki discussion shows that someone has tried damage testing with and without bundles. There was no difference, meaning that this is either a bugged trait or is working in a way that the tooltip does not reflect.

does anyone use s/p , p/p for WvW?

I have tried the set and can honestly say that I enjoyed it. I use s/p as my main PvE set and forgot to change my build upon entering WvWvW this one time… only realized it once I was at the far end of the map and tried to switch to my shortbow for an escape. Little did I know that the previous night was filled with drunken stupor and bad decisions, including replacing my sb with p/p. I ended up having to turn around and face 3 invaders on my own. Managed to separate them, switched back to s/p and kept one locked down around a corner until I could finish him off. I then stalked the other 2 like a freaking predator. Was so proud of myself xD
Was also pretty impressed with s/p ability in a PvP scenario.
All 3 kills were completed using the p/p unload. It really is a great killing burst.
I hope you keep at the set, there really isn’t enough love for non-d/d Thieves

Improvisation -- What is a bundle ?

The Improvisation trait refers to a bundle as a stolen skill – any skill you acquire upon using Steal on an enemy. The trait does not improve damage while holding, say, a water gun.

Stealth "ripples"

in Thief

As a somewhat experienced Thief, it is not a rare occurrence for WvWvW invaders and sPvPers alike to whine and complain when I down them. “Stealth OP” and “Thief = no skill” come to mind as phrases used to describe their predicament of not being able to beat me in a 1 vs 1 battle (which mean little to nothing in our beloved game). That being said, I find myself thinking at times… what if they’re right?
Rest assured, I promptly slap myself upside the face.
Continuing that thought, however, what if Stealth was dealt with in a different way? What if, say, people could see the “ripples” of a stealthed character as they do in other games? Anet could find a way to make it almost undetectable, like a slow breeze passing through the leaves. They could find a way to have more “ripples” the closer the stealthed character is to you, making him slightly more visible…

This thread what created with the intent of starting a friendly discussion. In no way am I stating that I dislike the way the current Stealth mechanic works, nor am I stating that anything SHOULD be changed. Portions of the post that contain my opinion have been labelled as such, and should be treated as such.

Unable to mail upgraded wares

You should have read what it’s saying before “8. Click OK to continue.”
The item becomes soulbound if you apply any upgrades.

Hmm… then this becomes an issue of the “Soulbound on use” not becoming a “Soulbound” once an upgrade is applied.

Unable to mail upgraded wares

User is unable to send upgraded equipment via mail

After purchasing or acquiring non-soulbound items and upgrading those items with jewels (this example uses Trinkets) (upgrading a Trinket does not cause it to become Soulbound) User is unable to send the upgraded items to a friend or guildmate through the mail interface. User is also unable to see the “Mail item to…” option when right clicking the item in inventory.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot title, load game.
2. Purchase any trinket from the Trading Post.
3. Purchase any jewel from the Trading Post.
4. Retrieve the items from the Trading Post merchant.
5. Press I to open inventory.
6. Double click on the newly purchased Jewel.
7. Click on the newly purchased Trinket.
8. Click OK to continue.
9. Right click on the newly upgraded Trinket in inventory.
10. Observe these is no “Mail item to…” option.
11. Open the mail interface.
12. Drag and drop the Trinket from inventory into the mail slots.
13. Observe the Trinket cannot be placed into the slots.

Duellist build, S/D

I like your build. I like it a lot. I think it hit my soft spot for non-burst Thief builds.
I do not, however, like that you chose to go with Runes of the Thief. I don’t really see condition damage as playing any part of your build, but would rather see you change it to either Runes of Divinity or Runes of the Warrior.
The -1 second on weapon swap from Runes of the Warrior would synergize well with Quick Pockets as well as the on-swap sigils. I would also change the Sigils of Leaching that you have in for other on-swap effects. Sigil of Energy, Battle, Intelligence would all suit your build quite nicely. If you decide to go with Sigil of Intelligence, I would also do away with Signet of Agility in favor of Ambush Trap or Haste for that extra damage (Haste doesn’t actually give you extra damage, it just let’s you stack damage faster. Bursty. Also, it’s a Stun Breaker. Hooah.)
You might also want to change out Flanking Strikes for Bountiful Thief. It rips two boons and gives you vigor on Steal, and the best part is that it’s on Steal – an instant, unblockable, non-interruptible mechanic.

Anyways, all of the above are suggestions and speculation. It comes down to how you play your thief and what works best for you. Best of luck with your build. I’ll keep an eye on this thread to see how it turns out

Steal UI suggestion

in Thief

Posted by: Pentalic.5409

Pentalic.5409

Hello all,

Something ran through my mind today while I was messing around in WvWvW. If I Steal and am given a bundle to do with as I please, Steal is put on cooldown in the background. This has been common knowledge for awhile. What doesn’t sit right with me is the fact that Steal is put on cooldown in the background. There is no indicator showing us the current time left on Steal’s CD while holding a bundle. If, say, I was playing sPvP and used Steal on a mesmer (one of my favourites). I tend to hold onto that bundle for awhile, seeing as it is VERY beneficial to almost any circumstance. Now, because I’m holding onto that bundle I either have to accept that I have no clue when Steal will be ready to use again or mentally count down from whatever CD it starts at. It shouldn’t really be this way seeing as Steal itself can be traited to be a huge part of any build.

Anyways, this has been my opinion… and this has been a disclaimer xD
