Great post from someone who has absolutely no idea how to play staff.
You have 3 options for small scale staff really.
1 – Cele tpvp staff (00266)
This one is going to be difficult to roam with because the kill time is long, and you will have trouble killing anyone that can disengage and reset, or who can readily cleanse your fire 3 / fire dodges. It is a very strong direct 1v1 build, and is one of the few builds I’ve played that has zero builds that hard counter it (you can stalemate anything).
This build is also extremely solid in 4-5 man roaming as a support role for heal and cleanse. If you have a shoutbow warrior with you, your group sustain is ridiculously high.
2 – Zerk lightning rod (06044)
This is one of the few builds that has enough kill power to roam 1v1, but you have a lot of ugly fights. Good thieves should completely destroy you (but a lot won’t because most in WvW aren’t good), classes with high condition pressure or ready access to interrupts are very ugly fights. However, static, gust, and earth wall are now high damage attacks that apply weakness, so you’ve gained enough kill power to quickly dispatch glassy targets. I typically run this with earth signet to set up lava fonts or gusts to get the necessary kill power. Combos like air swap, air 2, lightning flash, gust can full kill glassy targets if you get a sigil proc.
3 – Dire Signet (60620 blinding ashes + written in stone)
Signet ele is ridiculously strong with air + fire + earth signet. Perplexity runes completely take it over the top. This is one of the strongest 1v1 builds I’ve played in game. If you play it as sylvari with take root it’s borderline broken due to the bleed stacking. However, this build has low disengage since it has lower mobility without lightning flash, and it lacks the arcana / water line sustain the other builds have, so it can be bursted in group fights.
Personally, I prefer builds 1 or 2. Roaming solo as staff ele is pretty rough because dealing with 1vX fights against competent players is very ugly, but it really shines in small groups.
As an example, our guild typically runs a 5 man with 1 thief, 2 zerk lightning rod staff eles, 1 engi, and 1 condi necro. The eles add good condi pressure for the condi necro, and the ele + engi CC can turn single downs into stacks of downs when they try to rez. On top of this, the thief can set up great burst on ele lockdown, and eles can use eruptions to make it easy for a d/p thief to permastealth a group.

Changing venoms to being based off of the thief’s condi duration made a huge difference to how potent they are. Anyone who says that trait/food negates them has no idea how this game actually works.
+condi duration on the attacks sum with the -condi duration on the target being hit to give the total condi application. A venom share thief will be running:
+30% condi duration from trait line
+40% condi duration from food
+10% condi duration from toxic tuning crystal
+10% condi duration from malice sigil
for a whopping +90% condi duration. Which means that warriors with lemongrass, hoelbrak, and dogged march will end up breaking even, getting a 2 second immobilize on each hit of devourer venom. Even better, someone with no -condi duration will get almost a 4 second immobilize per proc. Yippee!
If you stand in a well kill zone, you will probably get 100-0’d in less than a second no matter what your build is, which means that if you don’t stunbreak or stability through the basilisk proc, you are going to die. So to get out of any venom well hit, you need a stab source and a soft cc cleanse in less than a second. Not too shabby!
Unfortunately, if you’re standing in a well bomb, you’re likely getting vuln + at least 1 converted boon to condition from wells. You’re getting chill, immobilize, and torment from venoms, and likely a slew of random conditions as well. So anyone saying that throwing a healing rain or well of power on the spot of the fight will do anything is hilariously naive since they clear one random condition per pulse!
This leaves your ways of dealing with this down to having a warrior toot their horn or a staff ele use their air 4. If neither of these happen or they don’t hit you, hope you have an invuln!
Venoms were typically not used in EU GvGs and you got funny looks for running them in NA GvGs. If you try to run them in any sort of 5v5 you’re probably going to get laughed at. The only real advantage an attacker has against them is that most people that play venom thieves are idiots and spend their time doing absolutely nothing between venom casts, so casters are slightly less likely to get ganked. But then again, those casters also might eat venomed-up rapid fires or life blasts, which are really fun!

Making blasting staff size default would give staff eles that don’t want to run cantrips viable options to get vigor, or it opens up the possibility of arcane builds being more effective. It’s basically one small change that drastically increases build diversity.

Staff ele can delete turrets and kick a turret engi off point to steal a full cap no problem. If they do that stupid floating turret crap though it’s another story.

Yes indeed and is the staff skill the benefits perfectly from blasting staff. Just need a trait that reduces radius on meteor shower now ;-)
In that case just use burning retreat to drag all the meteors to the closest corner of the meteor circle!

I completely love staff ele. I feel that it has some of the most unique play of any of the classes in game. However, I feel that the class is currently pigeonholed by a mix of trait and skill issues as well as a few minor bugs.
After spending around 1500 hours in tpvp, dueling, and roaming in WvW on my staff ele, I’ve come up with what I think is a minimal set of changes that would work to balance staff eles, increase their build diversity (in particular, make arcane builds start to become viable), and prevent them from having as many battles that are direct hard counters, i.e. d/p thief, shatter mesmer, power ranger.
Trait Line Changes:
- Remove blasting staff and make blasting staff size default
This gives eles room to experiment with much more build diversity due to the power of the now available adept traits in the arcana line. Eles can either forgo this line entirely, which now makes investment into the earth line for something like rock solid feasible. Or it allows them to invest more heavily in arcane builds by running Final Shielding or Arcane Mastery. Or it allows them to have a source of vigor uptime if they are not running a cantrip build.
- Fix the blast location on arcane brilliance, lower arcane brilliance cd to 20s
This heal fails to be viable because the cooldown is too long. Therefore, the hps is weak compared to Signet of Restoration, and it fails to have the condition removal of Ether Renewal. Lowering the cast time and fixing it so that it blasts at the caster’s location rather than the targeted enemy’s location would provide reason to run this heal in situations where the blast will provide good group utility.
Ability Changes:
Air:
- Change gust to a launch + knockdown, remove the precast time entirely (so thieves can’t headshot it, for example)
Gust is a weak utility outside of Lightning Rod builds. It fails to adequately lock down an opponent long enough to provide a good followup due to the fast recovery time, and it fails to create distance between classes that try to gap close, such as d/p thief, because the precast is long enough to be readily interruptible. Changing this to a launch will give an ele more counterplay options in down fights as well as point control ability. Removing the precast time will give eles a viable ability to create space for matches that unreasonably dominate a staff ele such as d/p thief.
- Lower lightning surge cast time to 1s
This ability simply doesn’t have enough power to warrant the long channel time. This certainly doesn’t warrant a longer cast time than Kill Shot. Lowering the cast time will actually allow the blind to be used as a counterplay rather than an additional bonus on top of landing the attack.
Earth:
- Fix earth 1 so it doesn’t obstruct / miss at any range of more than ~300 units; increase projectile speed; change weakness on hit to cripple on hit
Earth autoattack is currently useless because it is broken. It will almost always be strafed at any sort of range, and even when it is not it usually registers as “Obstructed” rather than hitting the target. Increasing projectile velocity and actually fixing the code that is causing unwarranted obstructions would resolve this. However, once this is done, the weakness application will be unacceptably high. Changing this from weakness to cripple allows an Elementalist to create space when needed in earth.
- Lower magnetic aura cd to 25s; lower magnetic aura duration to 4s
Staff Elementalists are currently dominated by builds that can apply sustained projectile pressure such as rangers. Slightly lowering the magnetic aura cast time allows an Elementalist to more readily use it as counterplay.
Utility:
- Increase Signet of Earth and Signet of Fire cast times from 1/2s to 3/4s
These abilities are too strong to be mostly unavoidable. Increasing the cast time allows players to more readily evade them.
- Make lightning rod hit through evade so evading into unsteady ground still triggers damage
Currently dodging into an earth wall registers a lightning rod attack as an evade, whereas static field still registers a hit. This behavior should be made consistent by forcing evades into an earth wall to trigger a lightning rod proc.
Overall, some of these may be minor points of contention, but I think all of them would give eles better build diversity and give them more options for interesting counterplays. However, if I had to reduce this list to only what I thought was critical, it would be, in the following order of importance:
- Fix earth autoattack
- Make blasting staff size default with no traits invested
- Fix Gust
- Lower Lightning Surge cast time
I would be interested in hearing how any other staff ele players feel about these changes, or if there are any other areas that you all find to be too strong or too weak.

This build was already good prepatch. I was over 95% wins in OS with it and it works extremely well in small scale roaming. Now it’s just completed kittened with ANet’s baffling signet changes (the cooldown changes in particular are so kittening stupid I don’t even know what to say). Lightning Surge hits like a freight train, the blind is an added bonus. Lightning bolt from air attune swap -> Lightning Flash + Lightning Surge + Arcane Wave is one of the strongest bursts a staff ele can dish out.
You’re completely wrong about the 1.5s lead time being impossible to predict too. Hey look an Axe/Shield warrior is running at me with his shield block up. Lightning flash the shield bash, what a surprise. There are lots of situations like this.
Gust OTOH is broken garbage. The fact that I can’t even use it to reliably interrupt things that are meant to be interrupted as counterplay… like ether renewal… is idiotic.

I disagree that you need might stacking to run a hybrid build. Mesmer is in a unique spot because a lot of the weapons that put out good damage also put out good condi damage. Pistol 4 hits like a truck and drops a ridiculous amount of bleeds. Scepter 3 hits hard and stacks confusion really well. Torch 4 can blind for safe stomps, hits pretty hard, and drops good burn.
I’ve run a PU hybrid for a while but I shelved it a month or two back because I feel gross playing PU. The only real place for it is in WvW roaming where you expect outnumbered fights against not very good players. Please don’t run PU in SoloQ or tPvP, your teammates will hate you.
Here’s the build, note that condi damage isn’t that high. It doesn’t need to be high as you have immense condi pressure from the weapon sets:

Against pew pew ranger you have no choice to LoS. If it’s open area dueling you lose… end of story. Same deal with a zerk rifle warrior. You can hope to win by them eating a lot of damage from a reflect but that’s basically it.
With thief it’s best to spam chill on them and make sure you have CC to weave through. However, smart s/d thief is a pretty hard counter because if they use 2 well they’ll never eat your aoe.

Point is, patching an exploit like this has caused no harm to the class whatsoever. The problem is more with clone life expectancy, anyway.
Play against something like a good hambow warrior. After you’re done dodging pin-down, combustive shot, and you’ve blown your distortion on all the other high dps attacks he has. How do you expect to not get blown up by their hammer chain? Doing something like clone swapping off of staggering blow to recover used to work, but it doesn’t since that attack will kill the clone now!
Just because you’re a bad player who didn’t see the extreme value of something like this doesn’t mean that it was nothing but an “exploit fix”

I’m going to assume you’re talking about s/d thieves because most other thieves are pretty tolerable on shatter mesmer, and I don’t think they require any special discussion… they’re a pretty even match in terms of who wins with more skill.
I have more trouble with s/x + gs shatter on s/d thieves than with staff/gs shatter. Good thieves will usually have their 2 set if shadowstep isn’t up so they can just get out of a sword 3 immob if you somehow land it.
I think the best time to set up on them is after the evade frames of flanking strike. Flanking strike has really low damage, so it’s fine to eat. Larcenous strike on the other hand must be avoided. The best bursts I see usually go like this:
Thief starts flanking strike -> eat the attack and f2 shatter existing clones as it ends -> dodgeroll phase retreat mw shatter for instant 3 clone shatter.
Thief starts flanking strike -> channel gs2 and dodgeroll shatter as it ends
Basically it seems like after flanking strike is one of the most reliable times to get a hit.
Other than that, it also seems to come down to counting their steal and being prepared to dodge it. Always watch for the CnD animation at range and dodge if they do it when steal is off CD; the same goes for them doing flanking strike at range when steal is off CD as well.
If you can catch them with a good burst, then it comes down to being able to daze their CnD attemps / gs5 them out of shadow refuge to remove their ability to reset and finish them off.
Most s/d thieves in WvW seem to stack the hell out of cavalier gear so it’s hard to 1-shot them, but I have had some success 100-0’ing them with the following chain (with illusionary elasticity):
Mirror Images -> Swap -> Dodgeroll -> Phase retreat + Mindwrack.
I run Air + Fire on staff, so if you get lucky with procs you get a full mirror blade, 4 clone MW shatter, and air + fire procs. I hit all of these and popped a cav-heavy s/d thief for 13k and took him out.
s/d thief is definitely a hell of an uphill battle for shatter mes, and I’d be glad to hear other gs/staff recommendations that arent’ “go play PU / mantra phantasm”

condi overload eats most PU mesmers alive. If you can lightly threaten them until they blow blink and decoy, then you can 100-0 most of them with condis before they can really respond. Good condi necros should be able to eat most crappy PU mesmers (which is 95% of PU mesmers) alive. A good condi engi can do it too. A really smart / patient condi warrior can do it if they can land pin-down and impale after the mesmers cleanse options (usually just their two torch skills) are on CD.
If you’re running a s/f s/d or d/f ele I don’t think you have enough options to really overwhelm them. If you’re on a celestial heavy d/d then you can make burn and chill do enough work for you to keep them really pressured. d/d is fundamentally at a huge disadvantage to PU though because of the clone on death traits. You have to be extremely meticulous to take out the clones at a range where they won’t condi load you on death.

There is a lot of counterplay to PU mesmers that’s not passive though. As another mesmer I usually do things like:
- Bait out scepter 2. If I have scepter out, throw an auto at it then scepter block to basically reflect it back onto them.
- Scepter 2 block any AoE they drop (hitting the last tick of null field and sending 5 stacks of torment right as their condi cleanse goes on cooldown is my favorite)
- Invuln / Stealth when they summon phantasms. Kill the phantasms with AoE cleave or torch 4. Summon clones while stealthed to give another target to the phantasms and make them waste their attack.
- Interrupt phant summons / heals with pistol 5 and daze shatter.
PU mesmers can be fun fights. However, it’s pretty shameful how completely terrible most people that play it are. I find that my PU build is a pretty even match against p/d condi thieves, condi necros, phantasm mesmers, and some really solid s/d thieves, so it can lead to some fun duels.

iDuelist is actually the only useful phantasm for air summoning. It’s useful when jumping off of tower walls to drop on something like a staff ele. All other ones just bug out and do nothing when summoned in the air.

I currantly have main bearbow ranger with over 3000 hours played i have good exp with group synergy such as place healing spring in fight and commanding bear to revive ally (like bad glass cannon elementalist!). Can also play mace/axe + sword/shield condi warrior or apothecary necro with traveler runes for use golems but prefer ranger for metaoriented water field play.

KH came over to Mag because they got sick of bad Tarnished Coast players following them and they wanted to play in a time slot they could have to themselves. They’ve had the luxury of getting to wipe groups that outnumber them repeatedly because Mag doesn’t have coverage then.
We want guilds like KH, not garbage like you’re talking about. You should probably stick in SBI with the ktrain that gets farmed at their spawn in ebg.

They ignore Mags first to attack SBI only. Since SBI are made of mostly fair weather wvwers after 1 day of losing ppl stops coming out . So SBI goes from 1st to last and stays last. Then they stop attacking SBI and attack Mags around Thursday . Since both SBI and Mags seem to be clueless as to what is going on they continues to attack each other the whole week so basically allow Yaks dictate 2v1 with them always on the 2 side. It is quite impressive to see them pull it off last week. But to see it work 2 weeks in a row …. lol

You take a picture of Ark being outnumbered that late at night to try and use it against someone. Every time I see you or Kyra post a picture of Ark being outnumbered its really late at night after most of the guild has logged off.
If you don’t want to fight outnumbered or you don’t like that a guild has more than you at a certain time of the night then don’t play at that time of the night or stop complaining about it.
All you do is come to forums and whine about numbers over and over. If I click your name and see your previous posts its just complaint after complaint. It a shame that ArK is being lead by such a bad leader/driver when there is so much room for potential.
Not everyone is going to play the game the way you want to play when you want them to play it so get over it, put the tissues away and stop acting like a spoiled little rich kid.
Just picture what someone like Rekka, Jericho or even Razi could do with a group of players as good as Ark has and then look at how far away you are from that picture.. Think its time you get off the forums and get to work because right now its just a kittening waste of talent.
You should remove the “WvW” part of videos from your sig since you deleted them all after you got called out for having no clue how to play.

Can [Ark] please stop trash talking EVERYBODY. We get it, you’re a good open field guild. No need to repeat yourself 73 times a day on the forums.
Much like real life, you’ll garner more respect if you let others boast about your accomplishments.
Telling others how great you think you are really just shows immaturity and insecurity and quite honestly belittles what you guys are accomplishing as a guild.
Instead of great fighters, I think of you more as forum clowns.Turn off your commander tag and run as a guild group you may learn to be something beyond blob fodder
I ran things on blue bl for 4 hours after the reset. I was running a 20 people group on field, with most of our players dedicated to defending and upgrading so we could get a head start on PPT for the weekend. My composition was mostly medium and light armor classes. May I remind you that Ark wiped on the first two encounters they had with Abys? May I remind you that your fellow server members from [Azn] wiped every time they tried to take on us? Would you have something to say to your fellow server members from [PYRO] about blobbing? What about [DERP] turtling inside Bay last week? We could brag and point fingers all night. Nevertheless, every time I encountered a group from Maguuma I wouldn’t back off unless one of our structures was endangered. I would try my hardest to push people through, even against all odds and being sure that I was going to wipe. It is what it is, you win some, you lose some, there are many factors that can influence the outcome of a ZvZ, no magical technic that will guarantee victory in every situation. I have massive amounts of respect for all the guilds in Maguuma and they all provide amazing fights that are huge learning experiences for us. I do understand that someone like you must have put a lot of dedication into this game to be as good as you probably are or claim to be, but all the flaming just makes you look pathetic and obsessed. It also hurts the public image of your guild. Instead, why not demonstrate all that superiority in the actual game? That would be more likely to give us something to respect and look up to.
