This would’ve been a better idea, they could’ve even made the items account bound when opened with that key.

Using the regular key should still give you the small chance that is currently beeing used of getting one of those items and those items should then be tradeable.

Everyone would get what they want.

I just see everyone in this thread acting like this:

Why? Well people raging at people raging about something people feel bad about.

Yes people are upset about spending money on this game.

Yes they said there was a “chance”.

No they did not, originally, specify how big that chance was.

People assumed that it would have a decent drop like anything else in the Black Lion Chest.

Yes, once people bought keys they specified that it was RARE.

LET PEOPLE VENT.

Yes some people will get over it.

Yes some people will not get over it.

Some people might keep spending money on pixels.

Some people won’t keep spending money on pixels.

I’m wondering if this is even legal…. Isn’t it actually gambling to sell a product for real world money based on chance of an item that one considers valuable? I imagine it’s a thin line when you are talking about digital items, but i would think that a company cannot make a profit based on chance.

I’m wondering about the same thing, alltho they’ve probably used a loophole. But meh they’ll lose more in the end then the people who bought keys with real money.

They totally abused the trust of their consumers, Why?

Drops tonics (100%), one boost (100%), and one other item (100%)

So we aproximatly know what they’ll drop and how much they would drop, even the lowest dropped item (Bank Access Express & Revive Orbs I pressume) from before the Halloween Event had a higher droprate then the new Skins.

That is some kind of Bait-and-switch, in other words fraud. They never said it was Rare before people started buying keys but when people started complaining suddenly the word Rare was dropped.

Not only are they committing fraud but they are doeing it on a large scale.

Since many call the Black Lion Chest a Gambling thing Anet would indeed need a Gambling License in many countries.

Also wanted to say to the people that are laughing at people that bought stuff with real money, or saying they should’ve played the TP the next couple of things:

It’s because of people that spend REAL MONEY that this game will be bringing out new content, that Anet will have a bigger budget for the next expansion, that they can keep the servers live and kicking.

In total over 7 years, because I trust(ed) Anet I have spent over 2000 Euro supporting this company (that’s even excluding certain things).

That’s over 20 Euro each month. I didn’t mind that, but now that they give nothing in return, i’ll give them nothing next month… and the months following. And I hope many people do the same, so Anet will feel what we feel….

kitten that lol, almost everyone I know has told me that they won’t be spending any gold on Legendaries. This was before the update right.

Now them doeing this? It’s gonna push people away from the game.

Guys, it’s not a guaranteed thing. You should have known that before you did it. No one made you buy the chests. So stop giving Anet any kind of flak about it. You could have just bought it from the trading post.

Let me quote something and put in the word that was missing:

The Black Lion Chest is getting a spooky upgrade for Halloween. Between October 23 and November 5 each Black Lion Chest you open has a SMALL chance to give you one of six exclusive Halloween-themed weapon skins!

Or they should’ve even said “Very small” and if you didn’t read that website, which many people didn’t do obviously then the only thing you have in-game is this:

I’m so sick of hearing that….. from the other side of the map…… every 30 seconds.

I actually went to kill him solo because I’m sick of hearing that line, not hard at all, got him down to 50% once but because he teleports all the time…. it’s impossible…. anyway, besides goeing to another zone, there is no other way to shut him up.

So many annoyances.

Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

Took a couple of days to get debugging in on this. It is in fact a 40ms difference which equates to about 7% less damage when spamming 1. We made this change because it was creating some animation bugs to leave it where it was. It was also encouraging just spamming 1 which isn’t the most fun gameplay. If our data shows shortly that shortbow is now not effective we can certainly address that, but would do so by improving other skills on that weapon rather than by reintroducing the spam on 1 and the bugs that it was creating.

I thought about this a bit more and played a bit more on my shortbow ranger and i’m “spamming” 1 just as much as then, well I don’t spam it as much because we can’t. Instead of using it 125 times a minute (480ms) maximum, we now only use it 115.38 times per minute (520ms).

What i’m saying is that I don’t use the other skills more because of the change that was made. I only use Crossfire less.

Reintroducing the “spam” on 1 will not happen because it never went away. The only thing that was done is make the shortbow ranger less effective. The animation glitch wasn’t fixed but “moved”, after the “fix” we’ve been having issues with Quickness skills and Anet got alot of “hate”.

So what has this “fix” brought us? Less DPS, unhappiness, hate, frustration and controversy.

I don’t know whether to post this in the “Game Bugs” or in the “Suggestions” sub-forum because it does have some “fixes”. But here it is.

I know this might be seen as nitpicking but that’s not my intention.

I just think the descriptions of skills/traits aren’t always consistent and/or might ’cause confusion in some cases.

The list I made are things I noticed while playing a ranger and you are gonna see that I replace apply, applied and caused by inflicted or inflict when they are talking about conditions. Why?

That’s because I see inflict as a bad word because if you inflict [subject] with [something] then that [something] is bad for the [subject] or that [something] is interpreted as bad by the [subject].

1. General changes:

1.1. Cooldown times, could use a rewording:

This effect can only trigger once every (amount) seconds.

and

((amount)-second cooldown)

to:

This can only happen once every (amount) seconds.

or

((amount)-second cooldown)

2. Marksmanship:

2.1. Malicious Training (II), could use a rewording:

Increases duration for conditions applied by your pets

to:

Increases duration for conditions inflicted by your pets

2.2. Predator’s Instinct (V), could use a rewording:

Apply cripple to foes you hit when they are below 25% health (15-second cooldown).

to:

Inflict cripple to foes you hit when they are below 25% health (15-second cooldown).

or

Cripple foes you hit when they are below 25% health (15-second cooldown).

3. In Skirmishing:

3.1. Sharpened Edges (II), could use a rewording:

Chance to cause bleeding on critical hits.

to:

Chance to inflict bleeding on critical hits.

3.2. Honed Axes (IX), has a spelling error:

Your do 10% more critical damage when wielding an axe in your main hand.

probably should be:

You do 10% more critical damage when wielding an axe in your main hand.

or

Do 10% more critical damage when wielding an axe in your main hand.

3.3. Trap Potency (XI), could use a rewording:

Conditions caused by traps last twice as long and traps recharge 20% faster.

3.4. Moment of Clarity (XII), has a spelling error:

4. In Beastmastery:

Well there are three possibilities:

  1. The 17th arrow benefits from quickness.
  2. The 17th arrow doesn’t benefit from quickness.
  3. The 17th arrow partially benefits from quickness.

All we know is that #1 doesn’t happen. I’d love to get a response from a dev on this.

During QZ you got in ~16.67 arrows, pre-patch. While that 17th shot didn’t go off during the actual QZ duration, it still partially benefitted from the quickness and would have a shorter than normal time to fire, as ~67% of the “cast time” was halved.

Just throwing that out there.

Should factor that into your maths, maybe. If you like that “accuracy” thing.

I’m skeptical about that.

Let’s take 480ms as a starting point.

480/2 = 240

Now 67% out of 240 is 160.8 milliseconds.

Then we need 33% out of 480 which is 158.4 milliseconds.

Next step would be to add those together:

160.8 + 158.4 = 319.2

So 319.2 milliseconds would be the “cast time” for the 17th arrow?

I doubt the engine is programmed like this because that would mean that the 17th arrow changes speed mid-air

No offense, but if your starting data is “16 shots over 4 seconds”, then that doesn’t provide enough precision to then distinguish between a difference of 10ms in your final results.

If you use the methodology of rounding down to the nearest whole number of shots, then the base attack period of Crossfire pre-patch could have been anywhere from 471ms to 500ms and you would have arrived at the same results.

Again since Anet has not given use the exact numbers pre-patch then we cannot do a precise enough calculation and have to start with numbers we do have, which I have clearly stated in the first post of this topic.

And the 10ms difference you are talking about is the difference between my personal tests and the numbers I got here:

And the reason I round down is because during the 4 seconds of quickness Quickening Zephyr gives, doesn’t matter if Crossfire attack speed is 471ms or 500ms, you cannot shoot more then 16 arrows.

And 4 seconds of quickness is, as far as I know, the longest amount of time a ranger can be under the effect of quickness using a single ranger skill.

Now if I would include chains such as, swap pet (Zephyr’s Speed)+QZ it would change, but the precision needed to get a full 6 seconds of quickness is almost impossible due to certain variables.

And if I bring even more into this such as the mesmer skill Time Warp or the Guardian’s Zealot’s Fervor then you get even more variables, which I personally don’t have the time/will for to calculate those numbers.

Also those would require me to have the exact numbers Anet has used in the programming for those skills, which I don’t have.

Actually I did the math and said this on page 5:

So Quickness doubles speed right? We know QZ gives us Quickness and we know pre-patch it was 16 arrows in 4 seconds and post-patch 12 arrows in 4 seconds.

So that means if QZ doubles speed we should shoot 8 arrows in 4 seconds pre-patch and 6 arrows in 4 seconds post-patch using “Crossfire”.

How many seconds are there in a minute? 60.

60/4=15.
8*15 =120. (pre-patch)
6*15=90. (post-patch)

120 – 90 = 30. ( outcome is the difference between pre and post)
30 is 25% of 120.

Maybe Quickness is bugged, QZ and Zephyr’s Speed are bugged and aren’t cutting the casting time in half for Crossfire, or they incorrectly increased the casting time of Crossfire by a time greater then 40 milliseconds.

I then went on to do some more tests and I have made two more topics.

… your semantics on the word “save” are sketchy. What is in place now is nothing more than a “clipboard” form of saving the name. When you swap a pet, the name goes away.

There is no save feature for the pet names.

A “soft save” is still a save. If there is a “hard save” feature then it’s bugged.

Prior to the nerf Shortbow shot every 0.48 seconds, after the nerf every 0.52 seconds.
With Quickness Shortbow should shot every 0.26 seconds but only shots every 0.32 seconds.

If your Quickness numbers pre-nerf are correct the old Quickness attack speed was every 0.25 seconds which is very close to the theoretical value of 0.24.
However it appears that the recent patch broke Crossfire+Quickness. I’ve made a thread about this specific bug:

Actually that 10 milliseconds makes quite a big difference:

If I use the findings on that forum and calculate how many shots we should shoot while using Quickening Zephyr post-patch we should still shoot 15.38 arrows in those 4 seconds. Which you can round down to 15 arrows because theoretically you can not shoot a 16th arrow in 4 seconds under Quickness.

What’s the difference between 12 and 15? 3.

I agree with you that saving names for each individual pet might not be a bug but the game does save petnames. If the game wouldn’t save petnames then we wouldn’t be able to rename pets and petnames would revert immediately to it’s original name the moment you press “Accept” when trying to rename a pet.

The reverting bug is one reason, the other reason I don’t name pets is if you name one pet and switch to another pet then that pet will have the name you have given the first pet.

The following animation glitch that can happen when under the effect of Quickness. This was recorded after the October 11 patch on the Desolation server.

I noticed this bug causes the ranger to shoot of an “extra” arrow which does damage. This happens when activating Quickening Zephyr or triggering Zephyr’s Speed.

I do not know if this also happens when skills such as the mesmer skill Time Warp is activated.

QZ, or rather Haste from any source, does not properly affect Crossfire from Shortbow.

It goes from roughly once per 1/2 second to once per 1/3 second. I’m not a math genius… but that isn’t twice as fast if you ask me.

Technically it’s not Haste but Quickness.

Crossfire, when under the Quickness effect, is definatly bugged.

I’m gonna pull some numbers from facts I do know so don’t get all cranky on me if some numbers aren’t the exact number Anet has used in Guild Wars 2. The outcome should still be as accurate as possible.

  1. 1 second = 1000 milliseconds.
  2. Pre-patch, during Quickening Zephyr, a Ranger would shoot 16 arrows using a shortbow.
  3. Post-patch, during Quickening Zephyr, a Ranger shoots 12 arrows using a shortbow.
  4. We know Quickening Zephyr lasts for 4 seconds.
  5. We know Quickening Zephyr gives us Quickness.
  6. We know Quickness is an effect that makes all skills and actions twice as fast.
  7. We also know that the casting time for Crossfire was increased by 40 milliseconds between pre and post-patch.

Let’s calculate pre-patch first:

So 16 arrows during 4 seconds of quickness. Let’s calculate how much arrows we would shoot without quickness. We know Quickness makes all skills and actions TWICE as fast. So we gotta divide 16 by 2.

16/2 = 8.

Correct? I hope so.

Now we know how much arrows we shoot during 4 seconds without Quickness. That would be 8.

Next up we will calculate how long it takes to shoot one arrow.

So we know from the previous calculation that we shoot 8 arrows during 4 seconds, so how do we calculate how long it takes to shoot one arrow?

Well by dividing the amount of time it took to fire 8 arrows by the amount of arrows we have we should have the amount of time it takes to fire one arrow. So i’m just gonna do it and hope people understand basic math:

4/8 = 0.5

So pre-patch we were probably shooting 1 arrow every 0.5 second. That is the same as 500 milliseconds.

Now let’s apply the same calculations to post-patch:

12/2 = 6
4/6 = 0.6666666666666667

So post-patch we should be shooting 1 arrow every 0.6666666666666667 seconds. Which is approximately the same as 666 milliseconds.

Now let’s calculate the difference between pre and post patch:

666-500 = 166

166 milliseconds? What? But they said it was only increased by 40ms?!

It is increased by only 40 milliseconds. Well… maybe, I can’t tell you with 100% certainty since I don’t have the exact numbers.

I don’t know how close we were at shooting out the 17th arrow during Quickening Zephyr Pre-patch or how close we are at shooting out the 13th arrow during Quickening Zephyr Post-patch. But what my calculations show is that under Quickness you shoot EACH ARROW around 63 milliseconds slower with a shortbow then intended.

If this isn’t correct then show me where I am wrong.

I left out the calculations to show how I got to 415% but here they are:
[(166/2)/(40/2)]*100 = 415

Anyway, this is exactly why I don’t use my pet as often as I want. It’s a shame really because I thought GW2 would be an improvement of GW1, Ranger wise this is the opposite. Rangers and pets are worse in GW2 then they were/are in GW1.

This thread wasn’t really meant to be a mechanics discussion. I was just curious as to why people were leveling up a Ranger, especially the people who profess to have a complete and utter hatred for everything about the class except for shortbow.

I know it’s not a mechanics discussion. But i’d rather give a full explanation on my build and how I use it, then just saying why I “hate” the other weapons the ranger has to offer and/or why I “love” Shortbow.

Archery is one of my hobbies and I love my pets. Also I have been playing a Ranger in GW1 for 7 years, mostly with a Recurve Bow.

I play a ranger for bow and pet.

Auto-attack, why is it beeing used so much with shortbow? Let’s look at the other skills and how/when I use them.

2. Poison Volley: I use it, mostly, as soon it’s off CD. When it’s off CD I go hug the mob, if possible, and shoot it to get most out of the skill.

3. Quick Shot: When I don’t have enough endurance to dodge I use QS.

4. Crippling shot: When i’m trying to escape I use Crippling shot on the mob/player that is chasing me. I also use this alot to start a fight, if I know it’s a fast-moving mob/player, mobs tend to run straight for you if you don’t.

5. Concussion Shot: I use this as an interrupt/stun. Which because of it’s positional requirement doesn’t get used that often.

So what are the rest of my skills?

6. Healing Spring: When my pet is low on health, when my team or players helping me are low on health and can use some healing, or when I am low on health.

7. Signet of the Hunt: I use this for it’s passive effect not active effect.

8. Signet of Stone: I use this mainly for it’s passive effect not active effect. But if I see my pet is in danger and might die then I use it for it’s active effect, that doesn’t happen often because I swap pets alot because I have 15 points in Beastmastery. And I also swap pets alot because of Zephyr’s Speed (Which has the same effect as QZ).

9. Quickening Zephyr: To increase DPS temporarily.

10. Rampage as One: I use this often in conjuction with QZ or Zephyr’s Speed (Pet Swap) to increase DPS. I also might use this as a running skill or for stability.

I don’t like trapping because of it’s requirement of other people having to trigger them, which is imho unreliable.

first off remember to turn off auto attack so that you dont self root.

That doesn’t always work, even when auto-attack is disabled you might still “self-root”.

Yeah, I can see where you would have gotten “l2p” from my “don’t give up” post. /rolleyes

The fact of the matter is that most people would rather whine about shortbow/pets/whatever and reroll instead of saying, “Okay, shortbow is borked. I wonder would happen if I made a build focused on greatsword defense and traps (or any other weird build you can think of).”

Where did I say you have to play a melee Ranger? I gave greatsword as an example. Second, we also have access to the longbow and axe. Both of which are ranged weapons.

Alltho the ranger did see many nerfs in GW1 I was still happy, and still am of how it played with a bow and it felt like the Ranger was the master of targeted distance attack. The pets were much more responsive imho, more easily controllable and the pets were completely optional.

Unparalleled archers? Nope, well not after the animation fix imho. As for longbow, it lacks, definatly when you see how the Warrior performs with one. Ranger doesn’t outperform a Warrior with GS but a Warrior with Longbow will outperform a Ranger with Longbow in most cases.

And why don’t I play a Ranger with other weaponsets besides shortbow & Axe/Warhorn?

- Sword/Warhorn: I tried it, ran into issues with the 1st skill, I did give it a couple of weeks but it just didn’t work well and I found myself switching to it less and less over a period of time untill I asked “Isn’t there anything more useful?”, and then I switched to Axe/Warhorn.

- Offhand Dagger: Crippling Shot, Poison Volley. No need for another cripple/poison skill & I don’t really like melee alltho i’m trying to like it.

- Offhand Torch: Lacking, doesn’t give much. Only one skill I would use instead of 2, Bonfire. I think Warhorn was more useful then Torch.

- Axe offhand: First skill kinda useless imho and I never really had problems with incoming projectiles. If I did have problems with projectiles then I would still not use it because afaik, you can’t move while using Whirling Defense.

- Greatsword: Again I don’t really like melee and if I do wanna play with a GS it’s gonna be on my Warrior, Mesmer or Guardian because I think they are better with it.

Odd you would bring Chuck Testa into this, because thats what a Ranger feels like now, taxidermized.

I didn’t say Ranger as a whole is unplayable, but atm the archer part is, unless you really want barrage in WvWvW otherwise you are better off by playing a ranged LB Warrior or a SB Thief.

but then Anet fixed an animation glitch.

Why? Probably because someone that used to be an adventurer, probably an Engineer, took an arrow to the knee (which was shot by an unparalelled archer) and decided to take revenge on October 7.

We need to find the man who did this and make sure he is not suffering from a concussion, if you find him he might be slightly dazed or stunned and talk gibberish.

Well here it is again, adjusted offcourse.

7% DPS nerf on Crossfire (base damage).
25% DPS nerf on Quickening Zephyr and Zephyr’s Speed (base damage).

And with base damage I mean that it doesn’t include the damage done by critical hits and bleeds.

I don’t know what you guys have been smoking over at Anet but that’s just rediculous if you don’t make any other changes.

Gobsmacked that’s what I am. Why? SB Rangers weren’t the strongest by far.

Anyway i’m done with Ranger for now, and i’m also done with buying gems for the time beeing if this is what they do with money, and that is spending it on people who don’t wanna do their job WELL. I’m even considering buying games again from an unnamed company which has screwed up several AAA titles because they didn’t mess up this badly.

Also stop with the weekly updates, test the patches thorougly, do the balancing properly. Fix issues, especially events, skill challenges, etc… and try to make sure they DON’T break again.

Now that is if it all was correctly implemented, but QZ doesn’t fire 14 arrows in those 4000 milliseconds post patch, it only fires 12 arrows in 4000 milliseconds.

Then if that’s true…

BEFORE PATCH:
16 * 134 = 2144 base dmg with QZ

POST PATCH:
12 * 134 = 1608 base dmg with QZ

PERCENTAGE REDUCTION:
(2144 – 1608) / 2144 = 25% less base damage

That’s what my calculations give me, I just simplified it and took a different path.

I guess you missed my earlier post, you cannot use 4 seconds and an accurate measuring time to calculate up to 60 seconds. This is the biggest fault i keep seeing from people saying theres no major damage decrease.
You are essentially saying that any decimal is useless from .1 to .9 but you fail to realize that 16,9 arrows in 4 seconds is 253,5. And no im not saying that was what it used to be but im tired of seeing that stupid kitten argument

I’m not saying that there is no major damage decrease. I’m saying the math is telling me that damage output has been decreased by 25%.

And people can’t do an as accurate as you want calculation because we don’t have those numbers.

Next time read the entire post.

QZ doubles the speed.

Before the patch, one arrow took 500 milliseconds. With QZ, each arrow took 250 milliseconds over a 4000 millisecond (4 second) time span. The base damage of crossfire is 134 per 1000 milliseconds (1 second).

Before Patch: (4000 / 250) * 134 = 2,208 base damage from QZ.

After the patch, one arrow takes 540 milliseconds. With QZ, each arrow takes 270 milliseconds over a 4000 millisecond (4 second) time span. The base damage of crossfire is still 134 per 1000 milliseconds (1 second).

Post Patch: (4000 / 270) * 134 = 1,985 base damage from QZ.

After the patch, SB crossfire combined with QZ does 10.1% less damage than it did before the patch.

(2,208 – 1,985) / 2,208 = 10.1%

So Quickness doubles speed right? We know QZ gives us Quickness and we know pre-patch it was 16 arrows in 4 seconds and post-patch 12 arrows in 4 seconds.

So that means if QZ doubles speed we should shoot 8 arrows in 4 seconds pre-patch and 6 arrows in 4 seconds post-patch using “Crossfire”.

How many seconds are there in a minute? 60.

60/4=15.
8*15 =120. (pre-patch)
6*15=90. (post-patch)

120 – 90 = 30. ( outcome is the difference between pre and post)
30 is 25% of 120.

Maybe Quickness is bugged, QZ and Zephyr’s Speed are bugged and aren’t cutting the casting time in half for Crossfire, or they incorrectly increased the casting time of Crossfire by a time greater then 40 milliseconds.

QZ Pre-patch – 16 Arrows.
QZ Post-patch – 12 Arrows.

Excluding bleeds that would be 25% decrease in damage during QZ.

Zephyr’s Speed Pre-patch – 8 Arrows
Zephyr’s Speed Post-Patch – 6 Arrows

So Zephyr’s Speed, Trait in Beastmastery that gives 2 seconds of Quickness when swapping pets, also has a 25% decrease in damage (excluding bleeds).

So I think that there is no problem with QZ or ZS but with Quickness.

Bug - Pirate Captain's Outfit "Shout"

The “Shout” skill for the Pirate Captain’s Outfit only seems to work about 1 out of three times to 2 out of 5 times. Don’t know if it’s a bug but why have a cooldown if it’s not a bug? And with not working I mean it the audio “Yarr!” line doesn’t always play.

Anyway it’s a small thing but just thought i’d mention it. People do seem to enjoy the cannon.

I agree, it’s time consuming finding what I need on the TP + I’m using more server resources by getting so many results.

Might not be true, it depends on how the search function is programmed and how it handles filters.

I really see no reason for these to be soulbound and not account bound. It’s not like we can’t transfer gold from one character to another, I do play longer on a character if I bought the wrong gathering tools (untill those tools are used up).
