Well, that’s just your opinion.

Don’t like it, you are free to skip it and find something else.

I direct these quotes straight back at you. That is indeed just your opinion and you are indeed free to find some other game with bigger hammers if you want that kind of thing.

Lol, wooow, you got me! kitten . My opinion is common sense, you people are crying because fantasy character wants to have bigger hammer. Hilarious.

No, you are crying because you believe that fantasy means you can have anything you want, and that is childish.

Um, fantasy is exactly that. You are free of all rules, you can create whatever world you like and your own rules. You can make things our world has never seen. It’s literally up to your imagination.
But hey, thanks for demonstrating you really have no clue what fantasy is.

Except of course, you aren’t free of all rules, you can’t create whatever you want, you can’t make things our world has never seen. Anet can, its their game. You and I can’t. We have to play by the rules they set, in the world they made. If you can’t see the distinction, then you are the one with no clue.

Hammers are giant smashing devices you use to pound peoples faces in!

Not really, actually.

In fact, most games, GW2 included, display Warhammers as massive compared to what they actually are like.

Check out for example this video: https://gaming.youtube.com/watch?v=QMsVbUUxUTc

Or just google for medieval warhammers. And those were the heaviest 2H weapons used, heavy enough to punch through plate armor. Why make them bigger/larger if it serves no purpose?

Gotta love this. You’re saying that small hammer can achieve same force and damage as 2x larger one?

If a 2x larger hammer cant even be picked up, let alone swung at any speed, then yes, the smaller one will do more damage. Basic mechanics.

Oh dear,
there is nothing wrong with the size of warhammers, if anything, many are stupidly large and I would like to see them a bit smaller. The head of a warhammer is usually only 15-20cm long, that’s about as much metal as anyone is capable of swinging, and the shafts are rarely ever more than 4 feet long.

I won’t get into the subject of scaling, but there is a lot more to it than simply moving a slider.

Good luck with your suggestion though, personally I hope no-one at Anet listens to it as we already have enough stupidly big weapons in the game.

Are you seriously trying to argue this with realism?

Why not argue it with realism? I like my chars to look like they could actually use the weapons they carry. 90% of the weapons in this game are really stupid in my opinion and I would never and do never use them. 2h swords that are more like surfboards than swords, no thanks. Hammer heads that are bigger than the characters torso, no thanks. Armour covered in stupid spikes everywhere, no thanks. That’s how I choose to play the game. I like to make it as realistic as possible as it helps me suspend my disbelief, and since an RPG is about the story I want my disbelief suspended.
The weapons and armour that look stupid in my opinion may well be liked by some, we each have our own level of disbelief to overcome. The fact I choose to use some realism in my choices in no way invalidates my arguement. Likewise, you are free to want swords that could never be swung and daggers that couldn’t cut through butter if you want.

No one said how you should play. You can play however you want. But to come to a topic where guy says his opinion on why he thinks hammers are too small and you counter it with realism in a pure fantasy game is just very weak argument.
Tyria doesn’t work with same rules as our world. It’s a fantasy world. And in this fantasy world, wielding small hammer that is suppose to be two handed weapon doesn’t make sense. It’s like you would try to twohand a dagger in our world.
So, again, you are free to like what you like and play what you want to play, but your argument is weak.

lol, it’s no weaker than his arguement that everything needs to be bigger. It’s all a matter of taste which will always be subjective.

Actually his argument is fine. I agree that it’s a matter of taste, but his argument has some basis. Most of the hammers don’t compare with other two handed weapons, they look out of place for this fantasy world. So his argument has some reasoning behind it. I agree that we should have a choice, since I’m also not fan of oversized weapons(I have my “limit”. But your argument is nothing but “well in real world….”

His arguement isn’t fine. You can’t compare different types of weapons. A sword and a hammer are nothing alike. The fact the swords are stupidly big isn’t a good reason to make hammers stupidly big. Walking around with a 6 foot pole with an anvil stuck on the end doesn’t make it look cool. Comical yes, but not cool. In my opinion.

And that’s fine, not EVERY hammer needs to be large, so you should have options to choose from, but there should also be options for those who want comically large weapons. Right now there aren’t enough options for large hammers, especially not for Asura.

Oh, I agree, there should be options which cater to most people. Had the OP came in and said. “Can we have a few new hammers that are much larger than the current ones?” then I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

What the Op said was “all hammers need to be 50% bigger or more as he thinks they are too small and it’s apparently an easy thing to do to change them all” That I disagree with completely.

OP, you seem to be making the assumption that every 2h weapon type should be the same length as every other one. That’s crazy. They have different functions and different ways of using them. The hammers have quite a realistic length for their type, they just have stupidly big heads on them. A greatsword is longer because the weight is spread more or lesss evenly along the length. A hammer is a big lump of metal with all the weight at one end. You can’t swing it like you can a greatsword and the longer you make it the harder it is to make a swing.
If you really wan’t stupidly big weapons there arer many MMORPG’s out there that cater to it, most from asia but a lot of WOW clones too.

Yeah, I can’t count the times some joker has dropped a BLMerch in front of the bank in DR making it impossible to reach. But if you think mounts will be bad for visual noise it’s the new holosmiths who will be firing of their rainbow of epilepsy inducing light shows that I think will finally send me over the edge. We shouldn’t be allowed to activate weapon skill in main towns either, its not like there is anyone to fight. Or make it so the guards fine you automatically if you do.

I can see exactly where the Op is coming from. I played from startup til about the middle of LS season 1. Came back just before christmas and bought HoT.
Yes there are maps in HoT where the meta still runs, but it’s a lottery if you can get on them and LFG doesn’t always help.
The map closure tool just flat out doesn’t work. You can be 20% into the meta and the tool tells you the map is empty and closing. Balthazar help you if you choose to move though, as it is garunteed to drop you in a zone where the meta hasn’t even started, and now you won’t have time to finish it. I guess that is why no-one ever, ever, ever accepts a move off map. But kitten , why not just fix the tool? Surely the game can see those participating in meta events and those just wandering around, gathering or vista-ing. Why can’t it move you to a map where others are doing the same as you?

And yeah, it’s a given that on the 22nd Sept for at least a month HoT will be flat out empty. You see it every time a new map opens, 5 new maps will just compound the problem.

The Argument for Tengu/a new race

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

To me, a new race would be a purely cosmetic addition to the game. I don’t get the arguement that it would add a lot of content. Pick any of the 5 races we currrently have. The racial content adds up to a couple hours tops, if you play it real slow. Tengu wouldn’t have any more replayability than any other race.
What it does add is a shed load of work for Anet. There is what, over a 1000 pieces of armour of different weights to fit to probably 6 or more body weights. Not to mention different animations for all the weapons due to different skeletons. However you chose to look at it, that’s a lot of work. And all work boils down to $$$$. How much does Anet have to spend, and could it cover that kind of budget? Only they can answer that and make the decision. Personally, I doubt we’ll see another race short of GW3. The cost/return doesn’t seem viable imo. I don’t buy into the arguement that a new race would generate new purchases.
If I remember correctly Anet stated that new armours were so time consuming that they will be restricted to expansions only, and then only 2 or 3 per expansion and I’m pretty sure that a significant chunk of that development time per piece goes to fitting it to the 5 races x 2 sexes x 6-10 body weights per race. A new race would take countless more development hours than they currently have budgeted for armours in an expansion. And that’s before we even start with everything else the Tengu will need, voice actors, quests, personal story (we all remember the mix ups the last time they did anything with the personal story don’t we?)

I didnt like the new LA at first but its grown on me. But to have it destroyed already? na. Think of the quaggans!

Exactly, I hate Quaggans. I vote we destroy LA just to get rid of them. They are the Jar-jar Binks of GW2, put in just to please the cutesy brigade. Nothing does more to spoil my immersion than to see or worse talk to a quaggan.

Back to the OP’s point. Maybe not totally destroy LA, but an attack that gives an opportunity to rework it slightly. I like the look of the new housing in the north west but I really think there should be more of it. The big empty plaza’s and amusement park flutey water spouts could go and be filled up with more buildings, terraces, towers etc. It would show progress as the population continues to grow after the Scarlet wipeout.

Easy to Implement Idea for Character Naming

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

While I think this idea would not be great for all the reasons stated already, it did set me thinking. How about being able to name all the characters on one account the same name?
Lets say you have a character called Bob Smith. That name is now linked to your account and unless you delete it and wait 24hrs it stays with your account. Why not let all your chars be named Bob Smith? That way you get to keep the name you like and can play it with multiple professions. Any mail still comes to the one account and you can only log in with one Bob Smith at a time after all.
I get that it is also probably a boat load of work for no return, but maybe one day something like it could be in GW3? Just an idea.

Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

I just can’t agree with the OP. There are some maps, and I’m thinking HoT here, where the nearest WP can be a 10 min run and glide from where you were downed, and unless you know your way around very well you might not even be able to find your way back from the nearest WP. In some cases the nearest WP is actually the longest way back.
If there were WP’s near all the major bosses, then it wouldn’t be an issue, people wouldn’t lie there defeated if they knew they could be back in the fight in 20-30 seconds. But that just isn’t the case with any of the new maps, HoT or LS3.
Be a decent person and just res them, it’s not a race for max dps. So what if the boss takes an extra 20 seconds to kill. I quite often cross a battlefield just to res people. GW2 is a game I enjoy, and I’m happy to spend a little of my time helping others enjoy it. It’s just not in me to leave another player downed.

Micromanagement of players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

At the end of the day, Anet has a long history of nerfing farming, going all the way back to gw1. I’ve never understood their reasons for it, but after a while you just need to learn to accept it. Moaning about it wont help, it usually just makes the nerf hammer hit harder. My advice is forget about it an move on.
But yeah, I get the point, a game that is advertised as play as you want to play doesn’t stop Anet saying play as they demand from time to time. I’ve never even set foor in Lake Doric, so it doesn’t effect me personally, but the way they have chosen to “fix” the issue doesn’t sit well. Carpet bombing an area isn’t a great way to stop farming, it’s a great way to stop anyone even going there. Seems like they tried to drive a nail in with a wrecking ball. Just my opinion.

Since Anet are going down this route, can we also carpet bomb the afkers at the toxic nodes in Kessex hills and the ones at Bloodfin lake in Iron marches?

Of course, since the portals dont line up exactly that means a lot of new terrain and a lot of blending effects (weather, light etc) between existing zones. So yeah, a lot more work than just a new server. Don’t see how it could help raise funds for them, its a feature that wouldn’t create revenue I think, so unlikely to happen.
I’m not against it, just cant see it.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

The main focus of the Elite specs was power creep, pure and simple. And we are now in the situation where core builds are severely lacking. Try getting a mesmer who isnt a chrono into a raid, or a ranger who isnt a druid. The power creep designed into the Elite specs made the core professions obsolete, forever changing their identity by saying that if you don’t go Elite you can’t compete.

But I’m going off topic here. My point was and still is we could have an elite spec that also uses our existing weapons, leaving our core profession identity unchanged, by simply using the core weapons as Elites.

I’d rather have that than face the prospect of my ranger weilding a scepter, or my necromancer with a rifle or shield. etc

Suggestion: no new Elite class weapons.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I can see how it looks like new identity.
Lets take the Guardian, they got Dragon Hunter, a trap dropping longbow specialist. But wait, we already have one of them, it’s called a Ranger.
I dont see it as new identity, I see it as an identity swap. A mix and match between professions that is in danger of continuing until every profession does exactly the same as every other profession, just with different names for it.
It would certainly sort out the balance problems though :P

Suggestion: no new Elite class weapons.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

@ EdwinLi

I think it would work for any profession, regardless of how many weapons they already have.

Sure, I get that it’s possible to make up some junk about why any weapon could be used by any profession, afterall, they’ve already done it, my point is that maybe it’s not such a good idea to.
Do we really need to have every profession use every weapon? To me that just waters down the professions. The profession started with a pretty solid identity that was easy to understand. Long before people try out GW2 they know what most of the professions do. Anyone remotely familiar with a fanstasy concept knows what a warrior, a ranger or an elementalist is. The names themselves confirm an identity.
Each new Elite spec waters down that identity. More choice isn’t always better imo.

Suggestion: no new Elite class weapons.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Now that I think about it, you could have it so the profession mechanic switches to the new skills, that would let you keep the original skills of the weapon and have 5 new ones, just like when a necro uses shroud.

@ OriOri,

Well that is the problem with players wanting everything in order to max/min. Why shouldn’t there be limits to what is available in the choices you make. Some choices probably should exclude others. I don’t see that as being a negative, though I get that others might.

Suggestion: no new Elite class weapons.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

Ragnar Stormcaller.6253

When I look at the different professions (and I play 7 of 9) I’m really very happy with the spread of weapons. I think that when the classes were first created they got the mix of weapons just right. Each weapon we had really fit the character of the profession.

The introduction of an elite spec changed that by adding an additional weapon from the pool. In some cases I think that worked ok, in others, just not. And I mean that in the sense that the new weapon choice did or did not fit with the aesthetic of the profession.

Now as another expansion is in the offing we are all eagerly awaiting a second elite spec for the classes, it’s just the thought of them shoe-horning in another weapon class into the professions that is giving me pause.

Do I want a pistol or scepter weilding warrior? hmm….no.
Do I want a longbow or rifle weilding necromancer? hmm..no
Do I need to make more examples?

So as an alternative to this how about this for a suggestion : let us keep the same weapons we have now. Don’t add a new one. Just pick one of the iconic weapons of the class and give us 5 new skills to use.

I’d love to see 5 different skills for the warrior GS, the rangers longbow, the engineers rifle etc.

If we end up with multiple elites in the coming years some classes will end up being able to use every weapon in the game, and as a result we will water down the sense of diversity you get from professions. Why bother with alts when every profession can spec for every weapon and every skill?

It’s just an idea, and I figure it’s already way to late for the next expansion, it will already be set in stone, maybe somewhere down the line we could get somehing like this.

tl:dr – keep the same weapons for new elites, just give us 5 new skills for one of the weapons or a particular combo. ( sword and board )

Thanks OP, great topic and some informative stuff there, well done.
I’ve always been an introvert.
I play solo, never been in a guild, don’t know anyone in game. I chip in on open-world events but I don’t group up. I try to help any player that is downed, even if it takes me out of my way. Other than that I avoid group content like the plague. The only time I went to WvW was to charm a wolf. I died incredibly quickly without even trying to fight back, but at least I got my wolf. I suck at trying to type and play at the same time and I’ve never owned (or wanted to own) a microphone so voice comms are out.

Part of me knows I should try to find a guild as it would give me so much more to do ingame like dungeons and fractals, I just haven’t scrounged up the energy reserves yet to do it. Maybe one day.

And then I would like to see it rebuilt more like it’s original style, a pirate base, cobbled together with scrap.

Ok, I get there are some dev’s somewhere that are really proud of their redesigned LA and may be a bit upset that I’m trying to rain of their parade. I get that. I really do. It’s just that LA as it stands today has no character, no sense of place, it just doesn’t look like it should be in Tyria.
As I understand it from the lore, a good lump of the population died the last time round. So how on earth did the remaining survivors summon up the resources to create a disney theme park (including cutey quaggans and flutey sounding water spouts) rather than the shantytown they should have been left with? I don’t get it. And I surely don’t like it.

So come on devs, have a heart and write another LApocalyspe into the living world sometime in the future and give us back our pirate town. Please.

Or is it just me? Cause I seem to do it at least three times per week.

When to expect some news?

They got seriously burned before by making promises they couldn’t / wouldn’t keep. Can’t blame them for the wall of silence approach. There will always be people who cry about it, generally though those who cry for more info don’t do it as much or as bitterly as those who get info and don’t like it.
Really we only have ourselves to blame.

Is it possible to have an old item refunded?

Or, since it is unlocked, get any other backpiece and transmute it to look like the blades.

While on the subject of annoying sounds, how about toning down or killing off that kitten seagull in Lions Arch who has been given the lungs of a dragon. It is many decibels louder than any other background noise and the invisible kitten follows you around no matter where you go ready to screach in your ear.
And while we are at it, is there any way to stop the LA music playing for its full 20minute score and following you into the next zone when you are only there for 5 seconds?
just curious.

I don’t have either Legendary, and I do find them HUGELY annoying, specially when three or four are in the same area like a world boss, or when the owner spams the fire in town just annoy those sorting out their banks. They might think it is cute but they are just being kittens.
That said, I think it would be unfair on owners to change it. I would much prefer a button where I could turn off the extreme weapon effects for myself without losing normal combat sounds.

I’m not missing the point, I just happen not to agree with it.
You are correct in that ANet can do whatever they want, and they can annoy however much of their player base as they want with their choices. But they cant do it without causing drama amongst that player base, and potentially losing loyal high spending customers.
Only ANet can decide if it is worth the risk.

Well we will just have to disagree then.
That you don’t see it as a valid argument doesn’t mean that it isn’t.
I’m not saying that it shouldn’t change, just that there would be alot of people bumping their gums about it. Someone who has spent tens of thousands of gems outfitting multiple toons would have I think a valid reason to be upset. Not from what others would get, but from what they had lost out on. As those gems could have been spent elsewhere.

Personally, I am also for shared gathering tools, but only as long as there is some sort of trade in service for those who have multiple copies.

There would be a massive outcry and demand for refunds if this happened as a great many players purchased multiple sets of tools long before even shared slots became available. It would be a bad business move if they did as you suggest.

Curious why more people don't PvP or WvW

Personally, I’ve played online games for about 15 yrs, and ultimately been disappointed in every PvP experience I’ve ever had. I just get no joy out of it, winning or losing. I believe PvP brings out the worst in people, and there seem to be as many bad winners as bad losers out there. I just don’t need the drama.

I think a lot of new players don’t try PvP in this game because they don’t need to. One look at the forums tells you everything you need to know about the PvP / WvW playerbase.

Woe betide any new player to ask in the professions forum about builds for open world cause they are struggling with the game mechanics (which are never explained anywhere). They are instantly shot down and told to kitten off as every Uber ZOMG PvPer knows that ANY build will work for EVERYTHING in open world ( despite the fact that it doesn’t if you only picked up the game a few weeks ago ) It’s disgusting the way they are treated. Those self righteous types are something I try to avoid, and as such I will never PvP in this game. I did WvW back in the early days but I haven’t in years and I have no intention of doing it in the future. The fact the Megaserver move dumped me in the least populated EU world probably has a lot to blame for that. There’s not much point of WvW when you can’t win anything, ever, because of a choice that was made for you, unless you are willing to pay to unmake that choice. No Thanks, I’d rather spend my gems on some nice skins or utility items than on an under-developed and rather minor part of the overall game.

My personal playstyle, I play the game solo. I’m not in a guild, never have been, and I’m not interested in joining one. I like the gameplay, I like the choice of nine professions, five races and infinite builds, I like exploring and finding things even now that I hadn’t spotted before in the last 4 years. I also love how great the game looks, the maps and landscapes are a joy to be in. To me thats fun. I also like a bit of co-operative play. Any time I spot a downed player in the minimap I speed over to lend a hand. the TY – NP is as much interaction as I want with other players.
Sure, that means I miss out on a lot of content, I’ve never done a dungeon and I’ll never do Fractals or raids as the PvE community there is just as toxic as the PvP/WvW. As a result I guess I’ll never have legendaries / ascended armour. But that is my choice, and I’m happy with it. To me the fun is in the journey, not the destination. Once a character is leveled and map complete I ususally delete and start a new one.

Before anyone replies with OMG – why don’t you kitten off and play a single player game? dont you know this is an MMORPG? – Yes, I know that, and be assured, the day they release a single player RPG with the depth of content and constant updates you get in a game like this, I will buy it and never set foot online again. Until then, I’ll be here, playing the game the way I wan’t to play it.

Fix "Champ Farming"

There’s not much I can add here that Grayfox hasn’t already said much better.

The fact is there is a lot of player abuse in the chat now that champ trains are running, and 99% comes from the train riders. And as they tend to stick to the starter levels such as Queensdale is this really the type of intro we want to give to new players?

What do new players see for the first 15 levels? An elitist and agressive player base hell bent on grinding the same 4 champs 24hrs a day.

Champ boxes really have brought the worst out in some people.

To all those train riders, do that if you want, it’s your game as much as anyone else who has paid to play. Just dont give abuse to those who choose to play it differently. After all, they paid to play it too.

DC as Scarlet dies

Yup, same thing happened to me. Instant disconnect just as Scarlet died, the 30 seconds it took to reconnect was enough for the event to be over.
It’s bad enough when it happens halfway through and you get stuck in an overflow that doesn’t have the event. This just takes the biscuit.
Whats the point of new content every 2 weeks if it doesnt work? And the “you cant do this, come back in an hour and try your luck at getting into the right overflow again” message on the empty overflows is just insulting. A great way to stick it to your customers.

rant over….

p.s. love the game other than this!
