final boss fight too much

So I finally got round to doing this LS, and didn’t even die on the final fight.

How can people even die on such an easy fight, let alone until all armour is broken?

Well, you are certainly a talented person then with good reaction skills, a top-notch spatial awareness and alert mind. But you are also a person which is familiar with current game and class mechanics and your own signatures links to boss solos so it’s your forte to solo things. It used to be mine too and I am sure with a lot of dedication I could get back to it. Hence why I especially noted it’s not hard.
It also kind of hinted why I got tired of raids in MMOs having its roots in boss fight designs which seemed to be more of the same everywhere especially now that telegraphing has become a thing it seems to have become an excuse for the same “spam effect here” fad. I frankly am disappointed that fights seem to revolve around dodge-and-kill-adds/progress undoer-fast-else-your-beer-will-get-lukewarm type of fights. It’s become a predictable design pattern now that I kind of anticipate it to happen in every fight now.
I had zero problems with the boss of the last chapter, it was slow, but doable. This time I was kinda exhausted from work and not really paying attention to stuff on screen. So I died a lot. I hope this explains it. On the other hand it would not have happened if I had been playing this game actively but frankly I am too casual due to real-life now, I play this game only for this story at the moment, actually spent money for gems to unlock the last chapter since I missed it. The only thing I am wishing for is not a nerf but some more interesting mechanics.

I made the mistake to do play the whole season 2 (not season 1, I missed that one) as engineer. The last fight in retrospect wasn’t really hard even though I kept dieing mostly to jumping off the ledge or getting thrown down by these stupid tentacles and the other times simply because after a long time at work your concentration levels are tanking in those fights. It was excruciatingly slow and repetitive like the other fights. Seems telegraphed dodge hell is the new bullet hell. As a general thing I have learned for these last boss fights: bring lots of time and patience, and a repair canister.
Otherwise it’s entirely doable! Remember: You don’t have to really like these solo fights, you only have to remain calm and stubborn enough to finish them.

I did WvW countless of times before but never bothered with map completion before taking a long break. I came back recently. I solo’d the most of them in WvW through being tiny and speedy, and also laying low. Only two POIs evaded me since they seemed to be keeps rarely being attacked but through a streak of luck and viciousness we banged down the doors of one and now I am waiting for proper map rotation which seems to be the safest route although the one taking the longest too.

Another idea – which I haven’t really tried myself – when you are desperate: if there is a keep not taken by your but by another server frequently try waiting outside and then rushing through shortly after they broke through but wait until they are up whacking the commander.

I am wondering how they determined who was there and who was not. I’ve definitely been there but the game crashed before reaching the very final stage. I got back in as quick as possible and in that overflow everything was done, so was the next one, and the one afterwards. Eventually I got dc’d again and then I couldn’t get back in for more than an hour. Seems there was some odd criteria which did not make me eligible.

I am very worried where this game is going to at this rate.

People could say ‘join guild, work harder and by the way everything is optional including playing the game!’. Daily and monthly achievements appeal to casual players iirc it was even advertised as one. In addition it was said that being forced into dungeons is against their design but in order to get this achievement you have to run dungeons and even Fractals. So if you are unlucky to find a group for whatever reason you are not part of the November club. This type of game design is very similar to high-end raiding in WoW where if you did not find a certain guild at a certain level you would miss out on gear and achievements. This breeds the same kind of elitism, the same kind of attitudes, and frankly this worries me a lot because the same issue arises which arose in WoW at some time: You can’t run certain content because in order to run that content you are supposed to run that content. Therefore the snakes bites its own tail which was why WoW introduced ‘welfare epics’ which aside from the controversy bruteforce-solved the issue caused by their own design. /sigh

One-time events are NOT unfair. They are NOT mandatory. They do NOT give loot that you can’t get elsewhere. They do NOT give an achievement. They are NOT responsible for your choosing real life over a game.

Your post won’t make people stop complaining. Just saying. I’d think the mods are taking care of postings which are not welcome anyway.

Also I am sure most people are aware of the voluntary nature of the event but same people have the power to tell other people outside of the game and may also remind themselves easier of said voluntary nature when the next event is about.

When Does DX11 + Nvidia Patch Come Out?

in Account & Technical Support

i’ve already learned the hard way to use names of companies or employees of that company on these forums or link to posts made by those people so here goes

on gw2g in 2008 was the first last and only time they said dx10 would be in the game.

later on they said not at launch.

hte primary benefit of dx10 back in 2008 was the improved performance. ambient occlusion is incredibly subtle graphical effect, and easily faked in dx9. in fact swtor and rift both fake it in dx9 right now.

the primary offering for dx11 is not tesselation(which looks great but gives a rather large performance hit) but rather the multithreaded rendering which in gpu intensive appplications offers to boost performance by a rather large margin. for this reason it is very attractive, and in some games which utilize it well, it allows them to add more dx9 and prior eye candy while still giving fps gains as large as 20fps under the same presets under dx9 mode.

anyways dx11 is nice, but it’s not what people usually attribute to it. and dx10 is a waste of time for both players and devs. dx11 without tesselation looks identical to dx9 barring any added dx9 effects under dx11 mode for a game(such as wow).

Besides it never been stated otherwise benefits are on case-basis. If you are not planning to use a feature at all it has no benefit to you. However any added feature has potential benefits when fully utilized.

Tesselation is in the same stage at the moment as shadowing was some years ago. It will take time until engines will make full and efficient use of it, at the moment some DX11 games do make light use of it (DA2, Batman Arkham City) and they would even run on my old 5870 back then which only had one tesselation unit.

Ambient occlusion is not a hardware feature it’s a rendering technique which these days can easily get delegated to the driver for native support of this.

Regardless even if DX9 cards can do the whole point of DX11 support was a net gain in performance due to things like DirectCompute (which is benefitting game physics) and multi-threaded rendering . Before that however there is a long road ahead I am afraid.

I am feeling pretty bad for the art design team as well. I haven’t really caught up with the amount of lore because it’s buried under a heap of annoying flawed technicalities which have been outlined and experienced already. I would have loved experiencing the whole event but alas it didn’t happen. I am afraid that in the end I won’t remember the event quite in the same manner which ANet intended to and at this rate the announcement of one time events might scare people off.

Overall I believe it’s a case of great ideas being wasted a bit and in addition to that I also believe releasing massive amount of content at this stage might have been a bit over-ambitious. It’s the same cognitive dissonance which caused the Mad Clock Tower drama among other things just in an escalated form.

What I believe they should do besides considering to make feasibility studies and more intensive test is probably scratch the idea of one-time-one-zone events as long as their technologies cannot guarantee it to be an enjoyable experience. Sometimes some things are simply not possible and have to deferred until they can be realized and implemented as you wanted. It’s better to have a simple idea – such as small-scale and repeatable events – which works and is enjoyed by many than an overgrown ambitious idea which is only enjoyable by designers after reading their design papers and while doing small-scale tests.

Low Level Areas - Reduced DE Rewards

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ravenblade.7685

Ravenblade.7685

As someone who’s been inhabiting Queensdale since weeks for purpose of running dailies I can see the reasoning behind even though I was annoyed by it at first as well – naturally as I made use of some design inconsistencies. Put simply there’s a higher DE density and frequency in low-levels with an appropriately low complexity as well. Getting the same full rewards for solo’ing events as people get having to do entire chains in Orr did not make sense.

Ah, but note though that the DEs in low level areas give less reward than DEs in Orr, or any other high level area. So really, what happened is that the previously lower rewards became even lower. Whether or not this was necessary is up for discussion.

Yeah, still they were easy enough for the money. I am not excluding the possibility of a bug though which only an official statement can clear up. But I could see why it is not a bug. Not that I’d mind if they reverted that

nobody solos the champ cave troll….nobody XD

Not anymore or well you can actually if you are in for a long haul but chances are players will come and help out first. But you can ignore that one really – same with other final bosses of each zone. There’s more and far easier ones around the entire zone. All of them solo-able.

[…]The first time you enter the zone with the event, you are taken to YOUR OWN INSTANCE and you can do it that way, whatever time of the day the event happens. It can easily be a one time thing there, just, on the date it’s supposed to happen, you can do it once, in your own instance. Problem = solved.[…]

Actually while a logic thing to do I believe going back to the Mad Clock’s Tower’s reasons stated for not being instanced would apply here as well: There is a system-based limitation on how many instances the servers can actually handle simultaneously. Spawning tens of thousands of instances at once would cause something similar which people had experienced when the Mad King’s dungeon was opened which were crashes and disconnect.

There is another solution to this: Don’t make single zone based events. Spread people out so there is less load per zone. It would also make sense seeing world invasions don’t happen on single front basis or at least someone would expect so.

It was a bit disappointing to say the least. I can’t really imagine many enjoyed that event to its fullest extent the way it was executed. So unless you craved for lag, mysterious deaths from largely invisible enemies and the responsiveness of a brick you did not miss out. Which is a shame because under the hood I think they had some interesting ideas which in the end did not play out well due to aforementioned lag. In that sense it must be depressing to see for the designers as well.

It may have worked out better if they split up the events over multiple zones instead of funnelling all players into one zone at a time. That way load gets more distributed the experience more enjoyable for the individual player. In any case they should make sure that enemies get rendered before friendlies. Not being able to see enemies at all is not fun.

When Does DX11 + Nvidia Patch Come Out?

I am hoping for a DX11 patch as well. DX9 is so ancient that there’s already been scrolls found in caves about it. Everything which DX9 can do, DX11 can do it faster and more efficiently hence why games with DX9 tend to be a lot more sluggish than if they were using DX11. Not to mention the help of DirectCompute and tesselation. Improved and new shader support. Not to mention that most people should have migrated from Windows XP already. And yes, I am actually talking from a developer perspective here.

I’m running on a 3rd gen DX11 nVidia card, GTX 670, with maximized settings and yes, you do notice it if frames goes below 60 fps. Moreover your input feels less laggy when you are at 50-60 fps at least.

Against De-promoting 'Holy Trinity'

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ravenblade.7685

Ravenblade.7685

Please understand that being a tanker or a healer isn’t an unwanted chore, a lot of people actually love it, and to see that group support traits(skills are oo-kay still) are almost always at the end of the line, and aggros are so messy that tankers are not even viable, is pretty sad.

…and quite a lot of people frankly do not love it and see it as a chore. It is easy to see both sides and understand them. There is no absolute “This side wins!” case.

I remember in early days of MMORPGs aggro mechanics were a mystery as well and laden with misconceptions. Up until people slowly figured it out over time.

I’d also prefer correct semantics: Tank.

Moreover, this DPS-preferred community seems to be ‘all in for myself’, as seen in most world events and dungeons, people using group buffs are next to none, with everyone strictly on their own dps, killing anything that is marked. Theres barely any sense of synchronization going on. That’s what happen if you promote a single DPS community into taking care of their own healings and tankings, they start thinking that they’re the ‘chosen one’ of sorts. Even combos arent much to be bothered as far as teamwork goes.

Holy trinity is an artificial enforcement of teamwork. It doesn’t make players magically become teamworkers. In a holy trinity based game you can also meet a lot people who are accepting a role for selfish reasons only. Outside the part of content which requires it they may still not be bothered to help you at all.

But that’s beside the point because it is at the end of the day still teamwork, just not an altruistic thus indefinitely defensible concept in this context.

Anyway, just hoping that you will look into this matter and review it in the future. But definitely not now, definitely, we’re already having a lot of ‘see-saw’ nerfs and buffs every week it’s hard to keep track, and the extremely controversial Ascended, it’s enough for now!

p.s. I’m a dedicated healer throughout my entire mmo life!

I’ve been playing these roles solely as well and I am still not seeing how this warrants me selfishly demanding the game to bow to my terms of conditions. There is no need to review it unless they run out of solutions for their current issues. If you are believing that holy trinity was conceived in perfection then I will tell you this: It wasn’t, there were a ton of controversial issues as well which got ironed out by various MMORPGs over time. So why should ANet not even bother iterating and improve on what they have, why immediately switch over to the old ways just because new ways aren’t perfected yet or just not immediately?

I’d say if they are switching to holy trinity the same way they peddled back on the progression issues then the term controversy has to be redefined once they do.

Ravenblade.7685

For all we know its a one time addition of another rarity to items. Not an ever increasing new tier of gear. /shrug the guild convo’s we have been having because of this though is quite interesting.

Well, doing a bit of exegesis we can conclude there’s more to come:

This is just the beginning. […]

Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.

So it is not a final thing. More is to come. Albeit it is at first only the missing items for the other slots. What’s more worrying is that they are now talking about end game content as a level 80 thing as opposed to the famous level 2 quote. This is a paradigm switch which goes closer to traditional MMORPGs than to their own original statements. The other thing is the deviating away from player skill being that thing helps giving you the edge, suddenly it’s high-end gear.

The new additions in November are just the start of our item progression initiative.

Here the choice of words is important. As it means that item progression will be a thing to stay and the November update is not going to be the final thing but more over the start of an initiative.

As we introduce the new high-level content, we’ll also roll out complimentary Ascended and Legendary items (to say nothing of the other rewards you can earn by playing the content).

So here it is again. The fact that each new high-level content gets its own Ascended and Legendary items. Paired with the item progression initiative above this will definitely mean that over time (since your number of item slots and switchable stats are limited) they are going to increase some items with more power.

That is of course just my interpretation of it.

They really should get official on this. Right now people are in a limbo where they know something will happen to the item system but not the exact details. Leads to tons of speculations and pendants to good ol’ “ACCOUNT CANCELLED!” postings.

I would not support a flat linear (infinite increase) system either which permanently affects the balance of the entire game. I have played WoW for 7 years and I don’t crave these things any longer hence why I am playing this game. I also hope that challenge does not equal to monsters hitting harders and taking even longer to kill. But I take it the designers get that most basic of ideas as well now.

I was jokingly speculating that maybe the stat increase is highly esoteric as the dungeon is named Fractals of the Mist. So there must be Mandelbrot dragons, we get +X to Complexity in the infusion slots and are getting equipped with polynomial swords. But on a serious note I hope they took a look at their approach of dungeon and encounter design as well. An injected gear progression system won’t make me suddenly love the current design.

But before descending into a spiralling rage I will just wait until official information is given and I’d advice people to do the same.

I think if they introduced a value like culture which you could accumulate by doing quests, events, dungeons and what have you in regions ‘belonging’ to a faction then they could remove the pure dependancy on gold or karma.

Honestly it’s not that bad. Unfortunately there is no way to determine how many players are within a zone. A lot players play and stay mute all the time while playing with others in the same zone. We also have unpopular zones sometimes even due to the unpopular choice of faction. I am finding a lot more people in Human zones compared to Charr zones or even Asura ones. I know this because I am doing my dailies in the 10-25 zones and there’s a night and day experience between some of the zones. Last but not least expecting full traffic in all world zones with high player concurrency 24/7 is even something which WoW hasn’t achieved yet.
Since 2008 there’s been the same ghost town debates of some of their realms and that game is far from dead.

Depends on what you declare as endgame. If you are mentally conditioned towards raids and gear treadmills then WoW will be your game you want to be in. If you are expecting some progression then yes it’s not quite there yet but that doesn’t mean there never will be. Since you’re not paying a subscription stopping now and coming back later isn’t going to be a problem.

Maybe dyes took the spot on the item drop table for whatever dropped as event item during Halloween. Feels like that. I am usually not complaining about too high droprate but dyes currently drop more often than brittle skulls. I can’t believe that’s intended.

Out of 10, what would you rate this year's GW2 Halloween Event?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ravenblade.7685

Clocktower – A- (grand idea marred with technical issues)
Rumble – A (I am not so much into DotA but it was otherwise well done)
Inquisition – A+ (well done)
Costumes – A (fun but they should tone down on the CC side)
Dungeon – B (it was not bad but initial technical issues made it partially unfun, solo’d that place)
Scavenge hunting – A+
Final event – A+ (hilarious)
Atmosphere and characters – A

Overall grade A experience or in your inferior point system: 9.3/10

Focus on fixing bugs, even at sacrifice of content

None of those sarcastic explanations really address my concerns. Unless the developers literally aren’t looking at live Orr, they should know it’s very much bugged. And the bugs are big. The temple events are supposed to be the big endgame events, and the Arah event unlocks a dungeon. They could be very difficult bugs to fix, as I said in my first post; but it’s been more than two months. If they really need more time than that, then something is really wrong.

They have several teams, they also have priorities which are assigned to each of these teams. If an encounter breaks it may be because a certain code in the game got altered. I assume they are using scripts for events with functions. If these break because of a bug which previously wasn’t there or in that form then content designers can’t do much. Any fix they have to make post-production would be delegated to a different sub-team dedicated to fixing things but then again that’s based on what they said.

Anyhow I share the concern about broken events especially those being broken for a long time. But I do not know how their priorities are like internally and whether there’s a greater underlying issues which needs to be addressed first. The last thing you want is 10 encounters being fixed then the bug within the engine causing this being fixed as well later – by coincidence – then breaking these 10 encounters again.

Do you think Class changes will be implemented?

@Flyfunner:

I just liked to think ahead because the idea is based on giving something more than what is not given yet and traditionally in online games all formerly strict concepts are becoming diluted by giving in more and more. I am also ignoring the technical side for a moment here because I don’t think it can be easy but that’s not for me to say as I don’t know their data infrastructure. You criticized them for not pricing things right. Be careful what you are asking for though because they might end up at a price which would be equal to buying the game again in order to discourage frequent use.
I also do not think the comparison with the holy trinity is working. Holy trinity is a meta-concept which serves as functional design for traditional MMORPGs whereas class changing would be strictly a service. Just because they broke a doctrine once does not mean they have become perpetual doctrine-breakers and are in for more.

I also do not believe there is much need or demand for this. Levelling is very fast compared to what I have experienced elsewhere. But I am sure you know this so it would be more of a thing to retain your current gear which depending on its level may or may not be hard to get in time. But I am having a feeling that gear-based arguments are not going to be very convincing.

@Levetty:
I was obviously talking WvWvW, sorry. Yes, it doesn’t affect sPVP but people tend to switch en masse to what is considered to be cool. I remember in a particular game they introduced faction change. Over night my faction’s capitals became ghost towns while I saw many great numbers of former comrades in all the same races and gender hopping around just in red color. I was happy they did not introduce class change as well. There would not have been much variation at all. Especially if people are disgruntled they tend to reroll to the FotM class. So far this was always a more acceptable thing because they accepted giving up their old toon in order to enjoy the gameplay of a new one but to do so they had to spend time and efforts first. If you’re removing both from the formula then unless it is overpriced they will just shelf out that money and take a shortcut. Thus for me it’s more a matter of obsta principiis.

Every time it manages to land a blow it gains a stacking self-buff increasing its movement and attack speed. So it can singlehandedly destroy groups much better than any dragon can. When I first time encountered it I was kind of shocked that developers would place these things in personal story maps. But there I was bennyhilling for about 10+ minutes with bombs. Glory to bombs as they don’t require turning camera much, only good bennyhilling skills.

Class change would have a huge impact if they implemented that. A negative on that is.

Imagine how many people would just level a warrior or guardian so they could switch to Elementalist or Necromancer at level 80? Not to mention the different gear and associated skills which you would have to learn minus your gameplay experience. It would also have implications in PVP and may lead to FotM-chaining of the worst kind.

Also you can level up pretty quick if you got the cash already: Namely through crafting.

Also I think it goes against their philosophy to offer services like that. You don’t probably know that but many people are waiting for an opportunity to make use of the term ‘pay to win’. With the different racial skills in mind I can’t even see them offering a race change. It’s also a slippery slope. If you walk down that dark path it is very tempting for players to ask for more and for the company to offer more. If they suddenly said no they would meet a lot questions of the kind “But you offered this and that. It’s not much different! Why stop now?”

A Growing Disappointment and Resentment

1.) I am not particularly fond of some parts of the story either but I know some people actually like the story in its entirety. WoW does not a better job here. Maybe SW:TOR did. Yes. All in all it’s a subjective opinion along the lines of “I don’t like spinach!”

2.) can’t comment here. Still guildless.

3.) I think they should leave in the infuriating stuff but fix the bugs. A lot of the later challenges require assistance due to shorter respawn cycles.

4.) Scaling is actually my favourite part and in my opinion not quite vigorously implemented as you would expect. You still are far superior to those being natively at this level.

5.) Water combat is not perfect but to call it “god awful” is an exaggeration. The things which make it annoying are occasional bugs. And of course being chained pulled doesn’t help either. But as Engineer I should have the greatest reason to complain, yet I don’t thanks to bombs and grenades being kitten awesome underwater in PVE.

6.) WvWvW depends greatly on communication, meaning also you could just listen to chat and takes a moment to get used to. If you are below a certain level you shouldn’t be at the frontlines anyway because I personally pick on those gladly if they are leaving the group in your pursuit. That does not mean I don’t like WvWvW. On the contrary. Despite its imperfections I found a lot entertainment in it.

7.) Now that’s a funny thing. You do not have to finish the story per se but I found doing so was quite fun.

I would suggest not to get worked up too much about a game anyway. MMORPGs in particular are very gigantic and very multi-layered. It’s more likely to see some issues the bigger one is. Take a break. You don’t have to play it daily. I took a break for other reasons to play games like XCOM:EU and BL2. Take a break, chill and maybe when you come back you will see it’s not as bad. If it’s ruining your fun then continuing to play will only make it worse, like cutting yourself first and then treating your wounds with sandpaper is.

I miss playing a healer

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

@Ravenblade
You do have to pay attention to the health bars in other games, but it’s more like having them in the back of your mind than actually staring at them. If they take priority over watching the actual battle, you were doing something wrong, at least in PvP (I can’t speak of PvE).

Yes, sorry, I was talking from PVE perspective. PVP is a different matter. I will probably release my PVP healing experiences in my memoirs under the title ‘As I Gazed Into The Abyss’. I jest but in PVP I usually healed a tons which is a tricky thing because in order to do it well you will have to focus a lot on health bars as well only that they are in the field now. I didn’t do so bad there though because when I did I got mostly positive feedback, I used to play as all four healing classes in WoW. Mainly as Druid though. Still I really don’t miss it as much that I wish every game would be like that game. I like to finally be able to strike a balance between actual healing support and offense here, if I ever felt the craving to play a pure healer again I would just rather go back.

As for dungeons, I am a bit surprised they actually were designed the way they are now. Perhaps they should make dungeons a lot more interactive. Say you have a zone with traps and you need someone to deactivate them while two others go and pull simultaneously a lever to open a door but everyone has to fight some elite there first.

I don’t miss it and I have been playing healer exclusively since almost 7 years and I still play a healer if I am bothered to log into the game which I have been playing. Healing has become considerably easier over the years and more forgiving. It feels a lot more like support now than previously where it was the 2D mini-game with bars – don’t say good healers didn’t need to watch them, they certainly had to in earlier years. It was because of this changes had been made.

I think the GW2 system needs some tweaks to encourage support and some sort of structure. A lot people don’t care. Things like combo fields are under-used. It’s generally a mess. I like playing support and you do notice the difference when you actually don’t just hulksmash around but actually try to balance support and offense.
