So i have just come back to the game. i logged in and bang i didn’t have a clue what to do! I am just so lost. I havn’t yet purchased HOT but i will if I get back into the game. so all im asking it:
1. What should I start doing to ease me back into the game?
2. How do new classes work? do i need HOT to get them? i’m talking about druid etc..
3. Is HOT worth buying now or should i wait until i’m back on track with the game?
Ive got alot more questions but will probably work things out myself any help will do! Thanks
Just started playing again myself a few weeks back. First thing I did was clear out my bank (it was a total mess).
Then I picked my personal story back up. I completed it last week – the first time since launch I’ve seen the personal story through to the end and I’m glad I did, it gets so much better once you reach Orr!
From there, I decided I’d do LS season 2, I used to login during it, knowing I’d want to play it one day. Before I did LS, I picked up HoT to unlock gliding and Daredevil. Then I ground out all of my remaining Hero Points from the vanilla maps (a lot of them).
Completed LS. Have done a few events and started doing my dailies again. I’ve now just started on HoT.
The last few weeks have been a blast! Like you, I was pretty lost when I started again, but following the Living Story helped me find my feet a lot and really connect with the world. Hero points were a bit of a grind though.

So months down the line and this is still an issue? Really crappy bug fixing here Anet, is there any intent to solve this?
www.varshen.com
I much prefer the old Lion’s Arch. It was more naval/pirate themed and had a lot more character, really miss it.
www.varshen.com
Currently I log in to update my living story installments, but that’s about it. I loved the basics of the game (the questing primarily) but that’s all at this point. If this game added some sandbox features it’d be huge, and would certainly have my unwavering attention! Things like
Housing
Improved crafting system
Trading system
Town ownership
Guild halls
More use of the sea (either ships or something else)
Yeah I know, a lot of AA features in there, but they’re features a lot of games are now adding. It’d be great to know if this game has a future which includes more than just moar quests.
www.varshen.com
Ah must have misread the description, bummer. Thanks for responding.
Aren’t the episodes of season 1 that you’ve already played meant to be in there though?
www.varshen.com
I love the addition of the new story journal, but the descriptions I’ve read said you could unlock season 1 episodes for 200 gems each. Thing is, I can’t even find season 1 in the journal?
I missed most of the season 1 episodes, but did play a couple of them, they’re not even listed. Where can I unlock season 1 episodes so I can replay them?
Thanks!
www.varshen.com
Nope, it hasn’t.
The thing about the JP cameras is that the early puzzles are affected by the problem because after they created the puzzles, they changed the camera in beta. I’m pretty sure they have no intention of changing the older puzzles.
The newer puzzles don’t suffer from the issue however.
Also if you’re a charr or a norn, you can use a tonic to make yourself smaller, which makes doing it much easier. There’s cheap as hell on the trading post (and you get them free doing dungeons).
Thanks for the tip. The camera hitting walls in general is a pain in the backside though, surely it’d make sense to do something about that?
www.varshen.com
I haven’t been keeping abreast of the whole feature pack thing, I’ve been in another game in recent weeks. But doing a jumping puzzle in game now and it’s reminded me of one of my biggest bugbears – the camera every time it hits a wall.
Does the feature pack include a fix for this? Are there any plans to fix this during the game’s lifetime?
Thanks

Ok, now I’m even more confused. If other MMOs handle alts basically the same way as GW2 does why do so many people act like it’s totally unacceptable to have to level and gear each alt independently?
I’d always assumed it was because they were used to other games that let you skip that.
DW, many opinions on game forums get me confused – this being one of them! Best to sigh, shrug and move on sometimes
www.varshen.com
[Devs still have “couple of big projects” cooking in the background]
www.varshen.com
Not sure most other MMORPG’s from what I seen are less alt friendly as they are completely separate.
The main reason why people say GW2 is not alt friendly is due to laurels and how they are account wide. Daily and monthly achievements are also alt unfriendly as in other games they can be repeated by any number of characters.
WvW and Fractal ranks in GW2 will be account-wide soon.
I see the logic. However I’d draw the opposite conclusion from the way it is set up. I can start my dailies on my main and if I log into my alt I can finish them on there – the fact that they’re shared, to me, means they’re friendlier – it’s not doubling up on workload :P
www.varshen.com
I’m not really sure where all this “GW2 is anti-alt” or “alt unfriendly” comes from. I’ve played quite a few mmos and in comparison GW2 is pretty standard – not overly alt-friendly or unfriendly.
It has shared bank and currency, which to me are the two most important things for characters with alts.
In fact in terms of being ‘friendlier’ the only thing I can think of is some mmos give an exp bonus for alts once you have a character to level cap, but that’s about it.
Edit: Just reread your post. Of that list the only thing I’d choose to add in game is the map completion. As for finding any of that stuff in other mmos – not of the 10+ I’ve played!
www.varshen.com
Okay thanks, I’ll check them out
www.varshen.com
So, you haven’t even tried a dungeon and you have a strong enough opinion that you’ll post on a forum complaining about their content?
Not sure if you understood what I’m trying to say. I can’t bash the dungeons as I’ve not played them as you said – but two guilds and I’ve still not been able to find a group prepared to spend time running them. That tells me there either isn’t enough incentive to run them for time invested (too long/poor loot), or they’re too hard.
www.varshen.com
I’ve yet to see the inside of a single dungeon and I’ve got two toons in the 70s.
The reason? I’d quite like to do them with guild mates, people I play with and know. However apparently (and this is just what I’m told – remember not managed to get a guild group together once yet) – they’re far too hard and not worth the effort.
I mean, what the actual hell? This is meant to be an mmo, a group game, but I’m told that in terms of effort vs reward dungeons don’t even appear on the scale.
If I’ve got any hope of seeing anything of this game other than WvW and open world PVE then guilds are not going to help me (I’ve been in two – left the first one for this very reason) and I’ve got no choice but to use LFG, something which should be optional. And yet when it comes to representing and earning points for the guilds they’ll happily lap those up. Where’s the return?
Has anyone else had this experience? Surely this is a big sign that something is majorly amiss? I mean a group game where people don’t want to play the group content?!
www.varshen.com
…and far more teams than that working on longer term content.
From whom we’ve yet to actually see anything at all in game.
Don’t get me wrong, love this game, love the quest mechanics and pretty much everything about it.
But given that one AAA mmo has just gone out for preorder (release in 2 months), another is in alpha and by the end of the week BOTH will have the NDAs lifted, now would be a great time for ANet to pull back that mysterious curtain and tell their fanbase what they’ve got to look forward to in the future.

(edited by Ren.5842)
I was thinking more tangible features – future plans for maps/quests/classes/races – content post LS season 1 or maybe some of the stuff coming in the massive features patch. Something to look forward to for people unsure about whether to stay or try one of this years’ new releases.
www.varshen.com
Bump
Can we get any word on if/when a features preview might be on the horizon at least? Is this something anyone else would be interested in seeing?
www.varshen.com
I was wondering this myself. With certain other mmo releasing in 2 months and 3 days and announcing it’s pre-orders this week, I’d have thought this would be the ideal time to remind players why they should stay invested in GW2
www.varshen.com
haha – it’s Asura I was having trouble with! During the WvW jumping puzzle, I forget what it’s called…
www.varshen.com
I’ve recently started doing jumping puzzles. Camera angles on those as well as in other tight spaces (staircases spring to mind) are terrible – very difficult to see where you’re going when the camera is zooming in/out and giving you very little clear vision.
This issue has been discussed numerous times since release, but please tell me there’s some kind of fix or adjustment on the horizon? In the next content patch maybe?
I’m pretty surprised that a game billing jumping puzzles etc so highly ever thought the current camera system was a good idea.

Sure, I will go with this strange car metaphor, we all bought `new´cars and Arena Net is the extremely dodgy salesman/junkyard owner.
Really the comparison you two chose is not helping your argument in the slightest. If you can not justify things without a metaphor, then perhaps their is no justification to your point of view at all.
So rather than address the analogue (not metaphor) you’ll dismiss it out of hand? It’s a perfect comparator – you bought a product, an updated one came out, end of.
One suggestion I would make is that this also be made obtainable somehow in game, that might settle things down a bit.
www.varshen.com
As it has already been mentioned, it’s caused by picking up any kind of object from the ground (banners, cannonballs in sPvP).
It has been happening for quite a few months now
Months?!! Surely something like this should be a priority fix? If you’re in an open world event (doing quite well too) then your only option is to bail entirely on the event in one way or another? Losing all of your progression? That to me is game breaking, can we please get an eta on fix or at least an ’we’re working on it’?
www.varshen.com
Wow this is really still going? Okay how about this:
You buy a car for £10,000. A year later (or some other arbitrary period of time) the manufacturer bring out a new version of the car for the same price which is better, say it’s got leather seats and you get more mileage per gallon.
Do you honestly go back to the car company to complain?

Queensdale champ train is so, so, so, sooo bad. For that to be the first thing a new player to be exposed to is just terrible.
Actually, for a game based on open world group encounters, I’d be shocked if there wasn’t some kind of group activity going on – the train is a brilliant example of that despite the occasional self-entitlement it fosters. There should be more around the world!
Also, mapchat it Queensdale is primarily train members talking/joking etc, which is a great example to set newbies who might be a bit nervous of participating. Kill the train, kill the channel.
www.varshen.com
Getting killed fixes it. Switching maps usually fixes it. Supposedly emotes can sometimes fix it (at least according to some people on map chat the other day) but I’ve never actually tried that solution.
Nah wasn’t killed or switching maps. It was in the marionette fight (which of course I wasn’t about to leave). Suddenly skills started working again – not sure what triggered it.
www.varshen.com
Happened to me once during behe and once during robo-lady on my engi. Robo-lady righted itself, not sure what, if anything I did to trigger the fix.
www.varshen.com
Could someone post the description of the molten pick that stated that it was the best, would always be the best, and no infinite pick would ever come after it that had better features? I can’t find that anywhere. :-\
The massive pricetag of 12 euros implied it. I certainly didn’t expect them to come out with a better tool less than a year later.
You cannot honestly expect players to pay 36 euros per year, or 3 euros per month, for what is basically a subscription fee for the best-in-slot harvesting tools?
Don’t honestly expect you to pay anything, the item is completely optional. It neither locks or precludes you from accessing any part of the game or progression. Buy or don’t buy, up to you.
www.varshen.com
Nobody is entitled to refunds. In the real world products change and have new features added or prices reduced. It would be chaos if those that bought older versions were entitled to discounts or trades. If you bought an iPad for $500 and then months later it was bundled with a free travel keyboard and a price of $399, you would not be entitled to a refund or swap.
Why on earth would you bring up the real world and try to make this seem like that. Real world is the real world. Game world is the game world.
With that thinking they could start selling upgraded versions of skills in the gem store. I bet your view would change then. They never said current skills were best in slot either.
Because online or not this is a real world. You bought a product, product works as described, end of. So a new product comes out, doesn’t invalidate the original purchase or entitle anyone to a refund on it.
www.varshen.com
Surely a right click option for ‘use all’, with further confirmation to avoid accidents, would fix this?
www.varshen.com
Levels truly are pointless in this game. While it is considerably easier to level than in many other MMOs, there’s still an overwhelming sense of tedium because everything you do between between levels 30 and 80 is time-gating filler.
Everything about GW2 just feels like it’s meant to be played at endgame, but somewhere along the line the devs decided to keep a more or less ‘traditional’ levelling structure without really adding anything meaningful for the players to do or attain at intervals between starting and max level (aside from T1 and T2 cultural gear). And of course, most of the player base tries to work around this by power levelling through dungeons and crafting – anything to avoid the wasteland of open world PvE events and exploration.
It would be great if the devs took a clear stance on this, and either made levelling alts easier after your first 80 or added some rewards to the open world maps to encourage players to go out and play in them to gain levels (I’d prefer the latter, to be honest).
I must say, while this is a good argument I disagree with it entirely. Levels are anything but pointless in this game – they serve whether people like it or not first and foremost as an indicator of progression. Not to mention the fact that the level number is a great barometer for where on this massive world map a player is meant to be.
That process is an important one – it’s the period of time where a player becomes accustomed to their character, its mechanics and skills etc. Whenever the conversation about buying a max level toon comes up the first argument out the gate is “but the player won’t know what they’re doing/won’t have learned the character”, same argument here, you need a learning curve, levels offer that.
People slam vertical progression, I think, because of all the examples of it done badly, here we have a system where it’s been implemented near perfectly.
Yep there’s a lot of good stuff at endgame, but there’s also a lot of good stuff on the way there too. One criticism I would make is that dungeons seem to be poorly implemented – check out FFXIV for an example of dungeons properly integrated into the levelling process. Other than that, it’s a fully fleshed out and realised game from levels 1-80. It also has multiple starting zones and more content than is needed to reach cap – so mix it up with your alts a little!
On the subject of alts, even mixing it up I admit it can become a little stale. The skill point suggestion, along with the option to sell tome of knowledge on the TP would go some way to alleviating that. But on levels themselves, I think they should stay where they belong – in game!

No they’re not on the bridge – it’s the bit before the risen appears. This is desolation server btw

Denton and his caravan are stuck!
Both died by Lionbridge waypoint, just before the veteran troll thingy comes out. Rezzed them both, now they’re just hanging around in the street like a couple of ne’er-do-wells. Won’t budge.

Um… yeah… this is, I mean totally terrible…
…. where can I pick one of these up?
www.varshen.com
Personally for me mounts are about style rather than function (which is fine – gaming is a visual medium). I’d love, LOVE to see some proper mounts, either horses or hell, even moas!
Mounts with an unstackable 33% increase wouldn’t damage anything. It’d free up a trait slot at best and at least every class would have access to the same speed buff.

Hi Mark,
Makes a lot of sense, but in terms of getting community feedback, I doubt most forum goers would trawl subforums unless they know there’s something there of interest. Surely it encourages less community feedback to suggestions overall?
I’ve seen many threads that were begun in other sub-forums, that were then moved to the Suggestions sub-forum, There, they died. I’ve seen comments in threads that were moved to the old suggestions forum that the thread had been killed by being moved to a sub-forum that few visited. Now, if someone wants to discuss WvW, suggestion or not, they know where to go.
I see this change as a win.
It’s a win for devs, who have to monitor less forums each, but how so for players? I rarely ever look in sub forums, how can we be sure players are seeing suggestions and being given an opportunity to put forward their two cents?
www.varshen.com
The ability to publicly view someone’s achievements is something that would be done through the API. I think you can figure out why it was moved there.
Yep it’s pretty obvious why, that misses the point of this post though which is putting suggestions in front of community eyeballs.

www.varshen.com
Posted a suggestion earlier tonight regarding public Achievement Profiles (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/api/Public-Achievement-Profile-please) which got moved to the API subforum simply for including those three words.
If suggestion posts are all going to get split up and moved to obscure subforums, can we just get the original suggestion forum back so they’re all in one place and people know where to look?
Thanks
www.varshen.com
Why was this moved? Yes it included the magic word but it’s a general suggestion – one it’d be nice for people to see.
www.varshen.com
Ah, I was thinking due to there being no suggestion forum anymore, that this’d be the place!
www.varshen.com
As the title says, what are the chances of a public achievement profile system being set up on the site?
Reason I ask is I use this little program called Raptr, it’s very cool, but pretty useless with GW2 due to the lack of API and info it can pull. Other games it’ll track achievements and recommend optimised settings, I’d love to put it to more use with my favourite mmo too! :P
www.varshen.com
Fear not. Maybe they’ll put them in the gem store and you can buy them for 200 each.
That would not phase me at all.
Quick question, I see a lot of hate for the gem store on these forums but rarely anything decent actually added in the store – are you guys seeing products there that I’m not or something?
www.varshen.com
All I can say is I’ve never had as much fun with a class as I have with an Asura engi
www.varshen.com
Yes please give us more emotes! It’s a simple, seemingly insignificant thing, but it makes such a difference and also promotes community!
Can’t tell you how many dances/cowers/threatens I’ve instigated while waiting for boar or other champ only for others to start joining in – they’re fun and friendly, more please :P
www.varshen.com
I agree, make em more useful please
www.varshen.com
Totally agree on the dyes – given that they’re so expensive, and that our characters already share a bank and all currencies, this really should be shared too.
On the contested waypoints, yep they’re a pain in the kitten , but they’re meant to be. It’s to encourage players to fight to save these areas – it’s one of the consequences of letting things go to seed. For that reason I say keep em.
On the soulbound vs accountbound thing, it’s not a major issue to me. The bigger issue imo is all the junk we pick up that we can’t TP or do anything with. I’ve got 40 mystery tonics and a load of boosters which I’ll never, ever use, but I don’t want to destroy em because they cost me money (chest keys) so please let me sell them – even if it’s as vendor trash!
www.varshen.com
What’s with the sudden multi train threads? Must admit I hardly ever run it, but leave it be, it serves a purpose for those who enjoy it – given that it runs pretty much 24/7 that should tell you how popular it is.
