Any updates to this MAJOR issue for PvE / SPvP? Any way to just lower particle effects or weapon trails across the board without making the rest of the game look garbage? Come on, this has been a major issue for years. You can’t dodge when a giant norn is whirling, obscuring the enemy’s animation tells.

Either by deleting a file or in-game? I can’t see the enemies’ tells in PvE when selfish people just make the screen a red blob.

There’s no way to disable a specific weapon. There’s only the generalized options in the video options panel.

PS it might help if you realize that no one is trying to make the screen a red blob and that it’s not any more selfish to choose to wield a legendary than it is to ask others not to wield them.

I’m asking for the good of the group, though.

The nature of MMR hell

in PvP

Posted by: RubberDougie.2750

RubberDougie.2750

The nature of the MMR hell (Matlab analysis)
To those who are unfamiliar, MMR hell refer to the long streak of losses many players experienced in season 2. It’s caused by reducing MMR lead to reduced teammate quality which leads to further reduced MMR. This also applies to win streaks. Some people do not believe this happens, and think everyone who has this problem is bad (ROFL).

I have written a Matlab Simulation of the Season 1 (and unranked) and Season 2 algorithms to find out exactly why this happened and what factors were involved. I made some educated guesses on the distribution of player population and implementation of the matchmaker. The purpose of this is not to publish in Nature, but to reproduce the symptoms people are experiencing. If you are interested in the assumptions, please see the figures at the end of the post and comments in the source code. I also made the source code available to anyone interested in running this simulation. (http://www.ssnt.org/personal/pvp/pvp_sim.rar)
For the complete post with inline figures, see:
For Full Sized figures, see:

So without further delay, the pretty pictures

http://i.imgur.com/eFxtmkR.png

Unlike real players, true skill levels of simulated players are assigned. This allowed me to have a look at how matchmaking captures the real skill. Both algorithms were terrible, with S2 being a little better with the added “benefit” of vastly inflating or deflating rating of some players. In this simulation there were about 4.5% of stuck players, and that number did not decrease as season progressed.

So why is this happening? Let’s look at a few factors.

Login Randomness
Eliminating the login randomness not only kills the MMR hell, it also allow S2 algorithm to vastly out-perform S1. If everyone who played less frequently only logged in while people who played more often are online (In the other words, the number of players online is a perfect sinusoid), there is no snowball hell. This is probably why Anet thought season 2 algorithms was better on paper. But reality doesn’t work like that. People have jobs.

http://i.imgur.com/O1uJLQI.png

This happens because people can’t find even games during off-hours. Looking over the data for the stuck models, I realize they overwhelmingly had very poor number of close games. But before we get to that, there is another factor to consider.

Within-team MMR Tolerance

http://i.imgur.com/eZmb03K.png

Removing the limit for difference between MMR of teammates improved the situation dramatically. It did not eliminate the MMR hell (about 3.5% player were stuck) for S2, but it did allow the MMR to have some resemblance of actual skill. The reason is an increased number of off-peak games, which increased the chance of finding even games during these hours. This leads us to the heart of the problem.

Rating Error and Close games

http://i.imgur.com/O0T1eDm.png A
http://i.imgur.com/eEz1DP8.png B
http://i.imgur.com/0RX0EEw.png C

In every case (A-baseline, B-Nonrandom Login, C-No MMR limit within team), the Maximum Rating Error is a decreasing function of number of CLOSE games (team MMR difference less than 300). This can be seen from the Glicko equations. A close game where team MMR is identical changes MMR by five times the amount of a game where the team rating difference is 600. This means as far as Glicko is concerned, games between teams with vastly different ratings are not meaningful. The team with the higher rating cannot gain MMR, and the team with the lower rating cannot win.

The job of Glicko algorithm is to estimate a player’s true skill from CLOSE games. Without them, Glicko cannot rate players. While these streaks of wins or losses are subjectively satisfying or frustrating, they don’t provide any meaningful information about the players’ true skill. The job of the Matchmaker is to provide Glicko with these games from which true skill of players can be inferred from wins and losses.

By removing the limit on the MMR difference of red and blue teams, Season 2 matchmaker is wasting everyone’s time with strings of pointless games. It’s less efficient without any benefits. In less technical terms, season 2 algorithm is dumber than two bags of rocks. Relaxing teammate MMR requirement for the old algorithm would do a better job.

Assumptions

http://i.imgur.com/R2GV77G.png

This is the distribution of player models used. It makes the following assumptions:
- Most players are casual and plays a couple hours a day, but a small number of players …
- Online time modeled as sum of a sinusoid with a random variable, and is strongly correlated (R squared ~=.5) with a pure sinusoid.
- Player skill is normally distributed and is strongly (R squared ~=.45) correlated with play time.
The more you play the better you get.
- Most players are okay, but there aren’t many past 2500 ratings, and there are 2% player with zero true skill ratings, which represent AFKs, brand new players and people who intentionally throw matches.
- Most players are pretty consistent between games. Their performance in each game is a Gaussian random variable with a log-normal deviation. A 100 deviation means 95% of performances will fall within 600 rating points.
- The ratings were adjusted in each game assuming each player played a series of game in the time interval against every player on the other team. Email communication with Dr. Glickman indicates the algorithm was never intended to be used in a sport where teams can rearrange between matches. I also tested the alternative interpretation where the teams were adjusted as a single player. But it made no difference. Please check team_adjust in the source code for this implementation.
- Teammate MMR requirement was 100 for baseline and 1000 for the relaxed case.

Please watch this post i made before. I made a prediction that anet will nerf the most efficient raid builds months ago. My prediction is accurate and thanks anet you are really going to do it.
Lots of people have already spent lots of golds on the ascended equipments of
condition warrior and mesmer. Their dps is cut by half after today’s patch. They are completely unless now and not wanted in any of the raid group.

Lots of my friend and guidemates are going to leave gw2 with your troll decision. You are following the wrong steps what blizzard did before in Diablo3.

Standing on the Pole in Mossman

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: RubberDougie.2750

RubberDougie.2750

Why is this a thing? Patch this crap pls.. It’s just annoying and totally unecessary. More peopel die trying to jump up on the pole than by simply fighting him normally. Honestly, it really is an easy fight.

You must be new here…
Mossman was stacked on rock, then tree, then this funny net thingie close to his hut, then water, we moved to the rock, then we were stacking him underwater, but outside skelk’s aggro… then we had pole dancing and again, tree. And did I mention stacking on another pole somewhere in between?

I think we should start taking gambits, when anet will just give up. Or make this fight like AC1 tutorial, big while flat place. No corners, no walls… That would be ok. Unless someone would find invisible wall XD

The question is why “we” are stacking in these weird spots for a fight that is quick and easy when done properly so no need for such gimmicks. And all the reasons above – boring, annoying, too much hp, too much damage, etc. – are not real reasons for the safespotting.

Because you exploiters are awful at the game. Don’t lie.

RubberDougie.2750

The core problem that plagues all PvE content is effort vs reward. In order to get anything even remotely worthwhile you need to repeat content ad nauseam. It’s flawed design, but ‘necessary’ for Anet’s business model.

Personally, having experienced a variety of approaches to various fractal encounters a few dozen times, I’ll stick to the fastest and safest method where possible. Longer fights really aren’t any more fun. I suspect a great many other players feel the same way.

Agreed – as someone who’s done fractals ever since they were first released I can honestly tell you the last thing I want is to enjoy another full length mossman fight.
The content is old and stale – if not for rewards people wouldn’t touch it.

Of course – we might not feel the same way about it if more and more content was added giving us a large variety of fractal islands – maybe that variety might have been enough to keep older content “fresh” since you might see it more rarely – but alas it was not to be.

The last thing I want is the “exploit or be kicked” mindset that plagued this community back when people exploited the geometry in the first room of Dredge fractal. That caused me to quit GW2 for a LOOOOONG time.

How about you just do Mossman the legit way or go do some other fractal?

RubberDougie.2750

Silverwastes needs a participation % system like HoT maps.

The current system encourages leechers and discourages people who do hard work to build the map up. SW needs a system to track active players and the % map completion from which they started to work on events.

For example, a player that was working on a map from 10% to 100% should get 300% (Stupidly absurd made-up number) more rewards at the end.

Let me be clear about my earlier comment. At this point, I recommend that players who witness this do report the player who is posting spoilers using the in-game tool. In my opinion, spoilers are beyond rude, they’re intended to cause distress to others. I’ve asked CS for an official position, but I would recommend that you flag and report spoiler-ish comments and let the CS agents make a determination.

P.S. This applies to the current topic — Episode 7 — and does not include “Someone is someone’s father” or “Rosebud is…” or “Soylent Green is…” or any of the classic spoilers of days gone by.

As I posted on Reddit, here are my dungeon suggestions:

“I think an approach used by City of Heroes / Villains (although, they did it kitten and didn’t update the values often enough) to awarding equal pay for equal work (to an approximate extent) could do well for dungeons in this game.

Simply, a continuously-updating database tracks the median completion time of dungeons over the past 30 days and adjusts upward the rewards of a dungeon, including gold, tokens, experience, items, or others based on how high the median completion time over the recent time period was. There would be a certain baseline for dungeons (IE the 40 / 60 tokens we have now) that rewards could not fall below, however.

How about it? This could also be used for Fractals. Though they seem to be doing some work on balancing the “harder” fractals, I don’t know if they actively collect the completion times of groups for each fractal scale and determine rewards from that."
