Melee sucks in mass pvp even when you have healers behind you and enemy casters have long casts. How to balance it out without those two, I have no idea. Even stuff like 5 second immunity every 15 seconds would still end up with you being alone in the group of other players that now have nice target in range and there are no dedicated healers to save you from incoming focused damage from 10 sources.

Endgame starts at lvl 1. If you include dungeons, at lvl 30. Either you enjoy that sort of gameplay, or you don’t.

Then I think my copy is broken becaues at lvl 1 my character had only 1 skill and no traits. Since its end game shouldn’t I already have fully developed skills for my character? Afterall you claim it is endgame.

Duels, sure! Just don’t allow them in capital cities for example. People fighting all around you while crafting or checking the bank is kind of distracting. Or add some dueling areas to cities, with spectator stands and all. That would be nice

Id like duels everywhere, including dungeons. No artificial limits to where I can duel. Often you end up waiting for something and rather than alt+tab id rather be able to duel to kill the time. I don’t get distracted by other characters.

So in order to properly play I am supposed to play without particle effects? What is next, turn of textures and point lights? No thanks. You may say it is an option, but that will end up being one of those options that you will be forced to use in order to play on a level others in group expect from you. Because like you said, right now you often can’t see what enemy is doing and you are playing blind.

Solution to this problem is simple. Target’s target and enemy cast bar.

You know why there aren’t many posts from people saying how much they love the dungeons? Because those people are too busy playing and enjoying the game to come here.

Just because all the whiners make the most noise, doesn’t make them right.

Using this logic, which by the way is used constantly throughout the internet, there is no such thing as majority of people disliking something.

How does this logic apply when all you get only positive opinions on the subject? Suddenly people do take break from game to post positive opinions in positive thread but somehow they don’t when it is negative thread? Does not compute.

Critics lol. Remember their reviews for D3 versus opinion of players?

D3 is a great game. Users give a lot of zeros just because the launch issues. That’s stupid, and unffair.

The user score of Metacritic , it’s the worst source of good reviews. The worst.

I played demo actually. Took me 3 aproaches to finaly force myself to get to the first boss that is how bored I was. I actually agree with their score.
I consider d2 to be 10/10 for comparison.

Oh and about todays technology. The graphic engine looks outdated there by about a decade. At the same time my friend using dualcore + integrated graphics had serious slowdowns even on low.

Ok, and I thank the other poster too, all great definitions.

What I’m trying to wrap my head around is why is this a new topic? Either GW2 did something drastically different from it’s predecessors in the genre, or this is a new feature that is starting to show up in games and ya’ll are asking for it here? Is that right?

FoV is as old as 3d graphics. It has nothing to do with genre. It is set up for any 3d game. Often hardcoded to certain value but good engines alow for on the fly change. Tweakable FoV is nothing new in games, there are titles that are 10+ year old that have it. Don’t know much about old mmos to be honest.

60 is standard for consoles, 90 for pc becaues monitor is closer hence takes more of your peripheral vission and needs more perspective effect. Watch the links someone attached here before for precise explanation.
Now if you ask me why FoV is not tweakable when it was 15 years ago? Well the very same reason why you have delay on input when moving in gw2 or why there is no trade button. You will find out answer to that you will also understand why each new game removes more and more graphic settings, why all new games allow you to beat them just because you installed them or why refresh settings for my monitor is considered “advanced” option in my system and is hidden from my eyes. I unfortunatelly cannot understand decisions behind modern software design so I can’t answer that.

FoV only applies to FPS games , in Guild Wars 2 the camera is way too close and you need to be apply to zoom out more.

No, FOV is strength of perspective distortion and applies to every 3d software including games. Standard for pc is 90, not 60.

Not that I have any right to any information, but this is the first time I’ve seen it talked about so much in a game (at least, the kind of games I like to play, which are mostly MMOs these days), and I was curious as to whether this is about something that is drastically different compared to other games in the same genre, or is this more of a thing like ‘physics’, where you were exposed to it somewhere else, perhaps outside the genre, and are hoping it’s included here?

I like to play rather close to my character. Usually where they like to put the camera behind you is pretty much where I like it. Some games I move it in a bit more. Rarely do I move it out. I like it when my character is mostly there in the screen, I don’t particularly like to play like I’m moving one piece around in an RTS.

I’ve never gotten sick, playing that close, but I suppose some people might.

So that I’m on the same page as everyone talking about this (in many threads and sites), is this something that has ‘always’ been a problem in MMOs and people are being more vocal about it now? Is it a new gaming feature people want included? Is it a situation where they implemented FoV drastically different than other games in the same genre? If so, which other games in the genre seem to have it right (I still have some active subs and lifetimes, I can go look at those for comparison)?

I’m just curious, thanks.

Field of view has nothing to do with distance of the camera. Basicly it is the strength of perspective.

What is it with kittens?
The good point someone already made was that with dps meter, or more like “damage done” meter comes everything else really. Since it is you who is responsible for your own survival, well then if you decide to put zero in survivalibity, fail every single dodge then guess what. You will be last on “damage done” list because you can’t dps when you are dead. Suddenly “damage done” meter becomes overall how much you did in dungeon meter.

I hate armory as much as gear scoring so that is completely another subject.
Ultimately it is this. There should be in game poll. With simple question, do you want damage meters or not. What majority wants they should implement.

Go back to WoW then. This does not go along with the game philosophy. And why in the world do you want meters for “dodge fails”, “damage intake”, “healing”? Those make zero sense in this game.

Telling me to go back to wow. Now that is something new.
Please inform me about that game philosophy you are talking about that this not go along with. I thought avoiding really bad players (not average ones, just really bad) or trying to improve ones skills was universal in any game.

Why would I want meters for those skills you ask. Well, if someone fails to dodge 100% special attacks that means you are essentialy playing 4 player dungeon, not 5 player one especially during boss fights. If he is down he is not doing dps, he is not buffing or healing anyone, he wastes your efforts and time.
Healing could show “healing others” cattegory, you would know the difference between players who bothered to try and aoe heal others when needed and those who did not. If for example there would be requirement to interrupt casts (which would be nice btw) you can see who bothers and who doesn’t.

Meters are why we have scads of pure dps-specced players dropping dead every 10 seconds in dungeons right now. These are, by and large, former dps meter addicts who think they can blast their way through an encounter that actually requires far more than fire power.

Stop using that “anti-casual” banner as an excuse for demanding a license to bully.

But even without damage meter you get people speccing purely for dps. This will never change. Damage is what most people like. This is not caused by addiction to dps meters. Should have thought about that before removing tanks/healers I guess. All you get is dps roles in this game and in that case people will indeed build for what their classes were designed for, damage. You will not change that mentality, ever unless for example death would be painfully expensive.

License to bully huh. When someone will say my dps will suck that does not hurt my feelings I am affraid. I am not sensitive to that.
What I am sensitive to are people who waste and do not respect my time, be it in games or in real life. So afkers, autoatackers or generally really bad players who do 10% of damage they should, people who don’t care about moving out of fire. People who don’t care about reading tooltips. So I hate when games for example do now allow me to kick such players (as in game I shall not name) because they implemented various systems that protected their “feelings” but not my time. Or in this case system that will not allow me to judge someone’s performance.
By the way I am not even that demanding or “pro” like someone sugested. In game I shall not name I had no problem that new player did 40-50% damage he should have. Problem started when at lvl 85 I saw someone doing 2k dps. Since I could not kick because of the “feelings” I had to leave and take 30m debuff since I was tanking. I really wish I exxagerated with that 2k, I didn’t.

Meters to measure both dps, damage intake, dodge fails, healing etc are important if you want to decide who to play with. Which is a right I like to have in games.

As to judging player by how good group performs. How are you supposed to know who is the weakest link without any performance measurement?

So, yeah I'll say it. Any working DPS meter mods out?

Dps meter is anti-casual so I’d not hold my breath. Sure would be nice.

I can see it now, a group leaving behind a well-specced skilled elementalist that AOE heals the group, drops AOE boons on them, crowd-controls, and swiftly clears conditions from everyone (all while putting up pretty good DPS) for that “L33T” 30 fire specced one that never switches attunements simply because he/she fills the DPS meter by 15% more…

That is why any decent dps meter tracks all those things. As for antisocial, well, internet is antisocial anyway.
Anti-casual is preciselly the reason why it is not implemented I think. Right now no way to check who has subpar gear, who autoattacks all the time and fails with dodges regularly. Why is that? So that no feelings get hurt, everyone is a “winnar” and is “speciul” snowflake.

Nah. kitten is pretty dumb. Has nothing to do with “anti-casual” or thinking you’re a pro gamer (you aren’t). DPS meters aren’t worth it.

So wanting to know which player doesn’t even bother to do anything other than autoattack is being “pro gamer”? By that definition yes, half of gaming population is “pro”. What is next, you will call me elitist because Id like to know which skill sets does most damage for me?
Damage meters are very popular, because guess what, most people like them.

Yes, let’s add the game-mode that has single handily caused more “nerf this class, buff my class” whining than any other in MMO-gaming history….

That being said, I would support 5v5 gladiator style deathmatch with three conditions.
1.) No gear grind attached (nothing says “skill” like outgearing your opponent, amirite?!?)
2.) only 5v5, 2v2 results in far too many buff/nerf cries when folks run into their class “counter”
3.) open Colosseum style maps without pillars, bridges, and other large obstacles (again, nothing says “skill” like a 30 minute LOS cheese fest…)

1) Agreed
2) 2v2 is indeed terrible to balance. 3v3 however is fine. In game I shall not name even when people screamed how unbalanced stuff is, you usually went to top 20 teams and saw every single class in there so it is doable.
3)But there are no dedicated healers. So you will not be able to run around for too long. I most defenatelly want environment obstacles. Otherwise it would get borring pretty quickly.

I disagree, you should focus on your enemy not on his target.

Except that when fighting in event when enemy is small and 30 players are hitting it I am affraid the enemy is no longer vissible on my screen. Sometimes not even my character. That is why you need target of target and cast bar for mobs.

Second option would be cutting all particle effects in halth and turning off screen shaking and I assure you, that would make combat even more dull than it is.

QQ / Complaints ans Comparisons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rzep.4592

Now almost every time I see someone complaining, making a suggestion, making a simple statement, pointing out a flaw. Basically when I see people giving THEIR opinion

The problem is that most people giving their opinion state it as if it is fact. Granted there are issues and they need to be raised but saying things like "this game sucks because insert thing of displeasure here is insert preferred derogative term here gets people hostile from the start.

However the same thing worded in a more constructive manner e.g. “I don’t like insert insert thing of displeasure here because insert valid argument here, I would like to possibly see them try to fix this by insert suggestion here, what do other people think?”. Is much less likely to inhibit an aggressive response.

In regards to people telling people to “go back to WoW” and such, it’s usually because these people just don’t have anything else to say, it is the generic go to response for people without any real argument.

This is incorrect.
By default, every single post that is made out there on all forums of this world is someones opinion unless he states that what he is saying is quote or result of some kind of studies.
So when I say something sucks, is boring or is fun it is my opinion by default. That is what forum is made for, so you can discuss and exchange your opinions with other people. What you are suggesting is that I started this post with “IMHO this is incorrect, but that is only IMHO, like my opinion only and not a fact seriously, imho”. That is how you expect every sentence to look like? People who attack someones post with “don’t make your opinions a fact” simply had nothing to say, had no counter argument and it is nothing more than yet another easy cop out like “I stopped reading here…” or whining about some small typo.

The reason why such behaviour is everywhere in the internet is because of lack of any decent moderation. I have seen people call eachother idiots on official forums for commercial games because someone staded he likes or dislikes something. Now if in every single case you would get 1 year ban for showing any kind of hostility you would get nicest forums on the planet in one week. That is all it takes, brutal ruthless moderation.

Now what is the source of zealot like defending of a commercial products 5 minutes after buying them as people would defend their family members, that part I am unable to understand and never will.
You claim that is because how someone wrote a sentence. I have seen people stating “I love this product but this one thing bothers me” and they have been ridiculed and flammed to oblivion. It doesn’t matter if its game, movie, music or electronics because that is what “fanboys” do.

So game is mediocre. Yes that is obviously my opinion and I should not be forced to state that because that is common logic.

Game Improvement - Suggestions

Rzep.4592

Currently for me this is 5/10 game at best. You have nice looking world that is unplayable for me because of underlying problems with gameplay design.

Biggest offenders:

-Combat is boring, simplistic and feels like poorly done console port. I need more buttons to press. 8 slots per weapon + 8 slots for utility skills minimum. Combat is number one reason why I am getting bored. I am expecting entire overhaul, not basic tweaks.

-Remove 10 second cd from weapon switch. You are dumbing down my possibilities in already simplistic combat even futher with this senseless artificial limit. There should be 1 – 1,5 sec cd on weapon switch tops. Pleace notice I am not talking about GDC.

- Tons of pseudo CC you have in game is too short. What do you want me to do with 1 second stun exactly? Not enough time to even autoswing. You should have entire set of short medium and long CCs so that combat has actual depth and plays like chess, not checkers. Don’t like this route? Then make it more like arcade fighting game with “real” combos. Whatever you do, add depth and varriety to it.

-Remove rng from game. I want types of boons and conditions to apply, counter and remove. I don’t want “remove, apply, modify random buff/debuff”. Yes that will mean you will need alot more skill slots and skills to add.

-Remove autoattak from bars and put other skill in there instead. Why are you waisting 1 out of 5 slots for autoattak?

-Remove lantency on movement. You have seem to decrease it alot but it is still there. Movement cannot have lantency on it, in any game, ever! That is a basic game design rule. Having lantency on movement if equivalent of professional cook not using salt.

-All classes play the same. As far as I am concerned you have two classes in game. You have range and you have melee with different names. Why for example I have to kite on my necromancer? Why I can’t for example play drain tank + cc to avoid damage. Why does every single class have to run in circles? While we are at it, why running in circles is so effective?

-Often weapons cover the same roles making them useless. Each weapon should be specialization. Great sword should be about aoe, 2h hammer about single target and stuns/slows/whatever. Mace + shield all about serious defense. Actually shield should give serious defense boost. So that there is actually a point in switching weapons rather then everyone running with great sword.

-Dungeons are awful. 3 trash mobs with obscene ammount of health, in ridiculously small corridors and boss that spams one ability over and over? That is supposed to be fun? Well it is not. Increase the size of corridors and rooms in dungeons, spawn 30 regular mobs + several veterans + 1 champion and once and then I can call them fun and engaging. Your engine has no problems handling that in dynamic event and so there is no reason not to. And make sure no boss has less than 3 skills that require you to do something other than dodge.

-90% of “quests” are kill mobs + pick up item from ground and press tilde to put it down. Needs more variety. At level 10 I had enough of it.

-Loading times are absurd and I am using SSD. Why is there loading inside the cities? Ever heard about streaming data? It was possible 10 years ago and is even more possible now. I expect zero loading times outside of dungeons/pvp. Yes Id rather have blurry textures for a couple of seconds when changing zones.

-No 64 bit in 2012? I have 16 gb of ram. Would like to use it.

-Dynamic events are brainless zerg and are way to easy. They do not require any kind of cooperation whatsoever outside of “rez dead guys”. This would improve if you actually had proper CC in game and required to use it.

-Field of view options. Where are they? I am not playing on a console. I am playing on a PC.

Minor stuff:

-Remove floaty camera. I want zero “glide” effect on camera. Again, basics of online game design especially for pvp.

-Add item preview in trading post. Add equipped item tooltip during salvaging and trading post.

-Add trade button between players. Seriously, no trade button?

-Pvp game with no duels? Really?

-Add pvp ladder.

-Add seperate button for actions and looting.

-Add target of target and cast bar for mobs and bosses. Why? Because when I played centaur event and there were 30 players hitting boss I did not see his model at all because of all the chaos on screen, I cannot see what he is doing and if he is casting anything at all. I am unable to react at all outside of “oh snap I just lost 75% hp that means he is targeting me now I guess, I better move”.

And I expect all of that in a single patch in one month tops or game gets uninstalled and guess which company hits my personal list of “do not buy”.
