Actually i’ve found him to be the least anoying of all the characters so far. Cant stand the charr hag’s, hate the female lionguard ‘im super awsome lionguard and dont need your help’ and the vigil guy spouting out cliche hero garbage. Some of the worst story telling i’ve ever come across. The next button is deffinately your friend.
I understand the OP’s point but the advantages of downscaling far out weigh the disadvantages. Downscaling is a brilliant idea. It allows people to properly explore all areas of the game rather than progressing beyond one areas level and never being able to really operate in these areas again.
Maybe an option where changing to your town clothes prevents you from drawing aggro if you are x amount of levels above an area.
You cant do it twice daily. You can do it twice on one particular day, but you wont be able to do it again the following day.
As i’m progressing through the game i’m finding that if i’m playing in an area close to my level i’m very effective and can fight against two or three opponents at a time without a huge problem. However, when I play in a lower level area and scaling down occurs, I really struggle, even though when I went through that area at the equivelant level, I was perfectly ok.
So are they getting the scaling level right? Its getting a little costly with repairs.
What’s going on? great, now I have a mental Image of He-man singing Hey yaaaaaa yaaaaaa yaa Hey yaaaaaaa yaaaaaa yaa, I said Hey, what’s going on….. and it’s going to be in my head all day now
I’ve sussed it folks…
This is why 40k orcs are so angry all the time and scream Waaaaaaaaaaaagggghhhhh
They evolved from mmo fans who scream waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and rage quit when they don’t like a game.
Sorry dude, couldnt help myself. If you hadnt blasted your way to 4 levels 80’s in a few months I would have had more sympathy.
Well, since the OP has since said he just doesn’t enjoy it, sorry but thems the breaks. Simply not enjoying something isn’t really grounds for a refund. Hell, if it was, just think how little the Twilight movies would have made.
I Loved the game Farcry, one of the best fps ever made. FarCry 2 was one of the biggest piles of kitten kittening kittyness ever made, but I didn’t ask for a refund.
It’s one thing to take a bite of a steak and send it back because it was under cooked. It’s another entirely to eat the whole thing without saying anything, then ask for a refund.
.
What if you eat the whole ‘steak’ only to be told afterwards it was ‘pork’.
Because when you purchased the product it WAS X. If it (arguably) transformed into Y 3 months later, too bad so sad. It’s an MMO.
You didn’t pay $60 for lost shores or the content patch, you paid $60 for GW2, and you’ve played that for 3 months, exactly as advertised.
If I bought a red shirt, wore it for 3 months and it turned pink from the wear and tare, I can’t refund the shirt kittening that I paid for a red shirt. You people need to get real. This is an MMO. Which means it is always changing. If you don’t like it leave and quit playing it’s really that simple.
I personally won’t miss any of you.
3 months is a very short period of time. If the core concept is changed that fast, which people believe it has, then they’ve been missold a product. That isnt an example of a game being as advertised. Sheesh.
You pink t-shirt analogy is stupid. The game didnt change because people played it… good grief.
IMO it’s quite low-class to talk about a refund for a game you played.
I would agree, excpect where a game is not as advertised and in a game like this it does take a while for you to undertsand whether the game is or isn’t as advertised. Why shouldnt people get a refund if they were told they were getting X but ended up with Y ?
To all the people saying it’s not wow. Shut up already. No one want’s it to be wow. They are simply looking for improvements in the games. Other games have good features, some have already been compied in this game, no reason why others cant be added.
The animal form is a joke. Actually, no it isn’t, it’s an embarressment. Sorry Anet but huge fail on animal form. HUGE.
The combat in GW2 is something I like. The idea of different weapons providing different skills and being able to swap to different weapons in combat easily.
So what are your prefered Weapons of Choice and why?
As a warrior i’ve gone with:
Set 1: Main Hand: Sword
Off Hand: Axe
Set 2: Main Hand: Mace
Off Hand: Shield
or
Two handed rifle.
I like the sword and axe combination as it gives me a leap in to battle, very nice when enemies are spread out and you are crippled, the F1 attack is a nice CC as well, and you have a basic CC. The Axe, a decent single blow and a brilliant AoE attack that really increases the adrenaline fast.
The mace and shield combination I like for tougher mobs. The mace is slow but hits harder than either sword or axe, and has a nice defensive attack, plus has stuns. The shield stuns and defends.
The rifle is useful for pulls, slow tough mobs, champions (so I dont get hit :P ), anf flying mobs.
Let’s start with MuD’s. Or Multi User Dungeons for you kiddies who were not born yet. I started playing and programming these back in 1994. Played Hall of Fame, Ancient Anguish, Wormhall and others… Very basic, very simple, but good fun, a good introduction in to basic programming and you got to make new friends with people from all over the country meeting up at various universities for weekends of playing.
Then Games Workshop launched one of the first MMO’s, Wolfenburg. It was pay to play but I got in on a free trial. For the time, it was visually very good though the content wasnt over inspiring. Once the free trial was up though I didnt go pay to play. Didnt seem like good value for money. I dont recall the cost, plus I couldnt play from home – back in those days most people were running pay as you go internet on 28k modems. Slow and expensive.
Fast forward many many years and eventually I got broadband and WoW. Loved wow, and I still think that up to the end game it is still the best MMO out there for basic pve content. Dont like wow pvp, dont like wow crafting or economy, but basic pve can’t be beaten. The world is vast, the characters have good depth, the events are great, flying is stunning the first time you do it (though WAY to many flight points now). It’s a shame the end game is a horrific grind and the gear score scum cause so many problems, but the dungeon finder was a huge boost. Plus, IT HAS PANDAS… (actually i’ve not bought the new expansion but still… PANDAS!!!)
Next up I played WAR. Got in on the early release, 3 weeks later was the 3rd person to hit level 40 and the world ended. Talk about no end game content at all. Still we toughed it out. Visually, not as shiny as other mmo’s and the flashy attack graphics turned big battles in to slide shows but it had an awsome background (warhammer), open quest contain (like gw2 events), fantastic pvp and rvr. Once the population levels got up rvr was so good that servers would crash under the strain and limits were bought in. 200 ppl. Come on, when else have you seen 200 ppl fighting it out? we once fought a battle with close to that limit for 8 hours. Friggin awsome. Sadly the inevitable class balance complaints started up and yes, Bright Wizards were OP and you all know it. Tinkering started, balance got worse, people left, then biofail showed up, added the renown grind and that was the end of WAR. A shame, I loved pvp in WAR.
Next was Star Trek. Spaceship combat started out awsome even with the massive klingon advantage of cloacked ships and carriers. Ground combat was farcical, really embarressing. Effectively not enough depth made it really boring really fast. So much potential so poorly executed. Didnt stay long, but I here content has improved and its now f2p so who knows.
Then came starwars. Mixed feelings about this game. Lots and lots of good. Its starwars, you know the score. Cant fault the background. Storylines were pretty good though not always great. PVP started out excellent until you hit 50, then they bought in a new bracket to seperate 50’s and that worked. Then they bought in the gear grind and I was just ‘meh’ outtahere. The lack of LFG was also a frustration. Lot of end game content missed. Pve was pretty good though basic mobs were almost as kittentar trek, repetative and boring.
At this point I hod no mmo’s to play and was a sad panda…
So I downloaded rift and aion and played there f2p levels. Neither was that inspiring. Shiny to look at but failed to pull me in.
Then came GW2. Do I like GW2? for the most part yes, but you aksed to hear about peoples previous mmo experience to see if there is a pattern and for me there is. Gear Grinding and unbalanced, uncompetative pvp. Hate it, wont pay for it anymore. I dont play pvp in GW2 because I dont want to be dissapointed again. I can play Blacklight Retribution for my pvp fix. Im not even close to end game grind yet, so im happy with the game right now. Visually its good and content wise its good. It has some nice features, I like how combat works with different weapon combinations and hot swapping styles etc… So i’m here until the gear score scum brigade make it not fun to be here.
The biggest thing thats missing for me in GW2 is a hook. I like to get pulled in to a story and I dont think GW2 does that very well, even with the personal story quests, it doesnt. I dont feel part of the world. Everyone is supposedly worried about dragons – could have fooled me.
LFG is a fantastic feature. So what it sometimes you fail at a dungeon. Are you really that uptight that you can’t handle a little failure? So what if a couple of people have to carry the rest. It’s called helping people out.
The alternative is that people dont get to play at all. Not acceptable – ever.
Anyone who believes wow was better without a LFG or that wows problems were caused by LFG, is a fool. LFG opened the game up to people who didnt have all the gear and were being repeatedly excluded from playing. What damaged WoW was that exclusion and the stupidly high increases in damage that came with each tier of gear. There simply became no point in playing and the gear score scum community ruined it.
I do all my stuff at one of the little outposts in the norn starting zone. Cities are to much of a pain to run around plus I get to help out new people do chain events.
Sunbathing shark :P
That would be a….. Basking Shark !!!! (basking in the sun for those slow on the uptake).
E.g. A poor child can feel so much happiness with just being donated a bread. The same happiness feel by a rich woman who just spent a thousand bucks on a branded bag. People who have tasted something, will want to taste something bigger to achieve the same happiness. Once they tasted something bigger, they want to taste something even bigger to achieve the same happiness. The human greed is endless. As we go higher, our “needs” to fill up the sense of satisfactory increases. .
Sorry but that is simply not true, a lot of people do not need bigger and better to achieve happiness. I certainly don’t. Greed is largely a social disease. You must have this you must have that. People want to be one of the have’s so they dont feel excluded by their peers. Cant be part of the conversation about the latest ps3 game if you dont have one, and so on and so on. Society is encouraged to ‘want’ in order to keep people consuming. Consuming drives the economy.
Hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving,
In all honesty, is this a game worth sticking with or is it one already in a state of decline?
Stick with it until it ceases to be fun. No point giving something up that you enjoy because you might not enjoy it in the future.
This is a false comparison. Real life careers aren’t “grindy” by design, it is simply how it must be. You produce a product or perform a service for money. This is simply how life works due to things like supply and demand. Companies generally don’t add grind (busy work) for the sake of keeping you busy, they want value-added work from their employees.
Real life is grindy by design. It’s necessary for government to keep the population in a situation where they can earn just enough to live but not enough to work less. Supply and demand is a myth as well. I can guarantee that the ‘demand’ is for lower prices but are you being supplied with that? The economy is not based on supply and demand, its based on social extortion. You are put in a situation where you need essential items. Food, Housing, Taxation, Fuel. Competition and lack of money drop prices not lack of demand.
I believe you need to have both. Vertical progression is a good way of developing your chracter and getting you involved in the game but there comes a point when the repetition of the same content becomes boring – the grind – and generally this comes at the end of your leveling rather than before, as hopefully you are still exploring the game during your levelling progression.
The ‘end game’ though has to change in to something new. It’s the reason i’ve left every mmo so far.
The end game has to be horizontal, but how do you avoid the same content getting old and boring as well as getting no progression from it? For me pvp is the answer but every time I think i’ve found an mmo that has great pvp or rvr/wvw, you get the idiots demanding vertical progression and you get the grind all over again.
Personally I think we need huttball.
I think mini expansions will be free but anything bigger I would expect to have to pay for. They cant support and develope the game on fresh air.
Veterans loot also seems to have died out. I regularly went vet hunting, now, waste of my time. At least they don’t one shot you though.
Well I had an extra 10 points to blow on something so gave animal form a go and yep it was as bad as I thought it would be, actually worse. I didnt think it would be limited to just 30 seconds a time. EPIC FAIL ANET. Should start calling you bioware.
Now I am a foreigner, so be aware that most of my posts use sardonic humour that is nigh undetectable by many populations.
Foreign to what?
We’re all foreigners.
He probably means “not a native speaker of English”?
I mean foreign as in ‘Americans often get really, really angry when they can’t tell that I am taking the mickey’
Indeed. Make no mistake that British wit, ubiquitous to natives of the UK, goes about 50/50 in the US, where 50% think you’re a prolific source of razor sharp one-liners and the other 50% think you’re an irritating, condescending twat.
.
Yeah but that last 50% think that nascar is cool.
I am curious why you think an online game should have easy access to fun while real life shouldn’t.
Because that´s what they are for, fun.
Games are entertainment, they´re made to give us enjoyment….if they turn fun in to cheap skinners box, they´ve failed.
I think you missed the point. He’s not saying why should games be fun, hes saying why should life not be fun.
The majority of people dont believe in hard work for reward, they are just forced in to that situation and social programmed to spout out the party line, and because if they have to suffer working hard so should everyone else.
How many of those same people would continue to work 48 hours a week in a minimum wage job if they won the lottery? All of a sudden, now they dont need to , the philosophy of working hard goes out the window.
Americans have it pretty bad with this stupid ‘hard work’ philosphy and work the longest hours of any country in the world. Yet their productivity is decreasing. Countries in Europe having been limiting working hours (france is down to 35 a week) and have seen productivity increasing. – not to mention minimum standards of paid time off. Equaly, quality of life is seen as much higher in Europe than in the US.
I am…
I started out not knowing anything about Guild Wars. I never played the origional game, i’ve not been following the development of the game over the years other than picking up a few things here and there on forums or in magazines. I wanted to come to the game with as few a expectations as possible after being very dissapointed by the way previous mmo’s went.
I wasn’t overly impressed when I first started playing. Nothing really grabbed my interest and a deleted my first three characters very quickly. I was thinking ‘This is no better than Rift or Aion’ and I was pretty much ‘meh’ about the game with my eyes straying to my WAR and WOW icons in the task bar. I stayed with it though and found a character I liked but even then I wasnt overly impressed with the game.
As that’s gone on though i’ve started to appreciate the game a lot more. There are nice features that i’ve not seen elsewhere before. (though they may exist). I like the way the combat works with different weapons and combinations giving different skills, as well as the abilityt to swap weapon loads in combat. I’ve liked the way that resources and kills are there for everyone to benefit from. No one (yet) has gotten the kitten over me jumping in to one of their fights and helping out or getting to a resource node first. The shared resource bank is very cool as well.
I like the exploration, though I think it can be improved with more hidden places to discover. The rewards for exploring are a decent incentive to do it, and there are some enjoyable areas to fight in as a result. It also makes you appreciate how big the world is. It’s a shame that it’s not truly open world though.
Scaling down is a brilliant idea. Not only can I always have meaningful play in a favourite zone but it’s a great way to encourage people to help each other out. (i’ve also suggested scaling up as a means of removing the grind for new gear issue)
So overall, the more i’m playing the more fun i’m having at the moment. Sure, there are always things that can be improved and there are some annoying features, but with all the threads on the forums covering these issues, I thought it would make a nice change of pace to hear about the aspects of the game people are enjoying.
IMO if a company was smart they would do away with offcial forums.
That’s not smart at all it’s just proof that the company doesn’t give a kitten about it’s customers.
NO, absoloutely under no circumstances what so ever should gear score, or any tool that allows one player to pass judgement on another, should be allowed in this game.
I appreciate why people want it but it’s a tool that gets abused by kitten to make other peoples lives miserable.
A better system would simply be to let the game decide. Similar to the system in wow that only lets you sign up to dungeons you can be reasonably expected to finish. That way you wont get some over weight basement dwelling no life muppet kicking people out or turning them away because they have one stat point less than maximum.
Just say NO to gear score scum.
Warrior. Simply because every other mmo i’ve been some for of ranged attack and a change of pace has been fun.
I’d also put in that its a norn. I’ve tried all the races and i’ve probably disliked certain class types because of the race i’ve chosen. Have deleted two Charr characters (necromancer and ranger) and two big eared fish faced characters. (necromancer and elementalist) Forget what they all called but dont like em.
So what happens if you are skint and have no money and die????
This post reeks of fallacies. They dont hate anyone, they monitor trends in population and place the events during times when the largest amount of people typically play. .
Exactly. They basically say, screw everyone else who doesnt play when we want them to.
I have to say I am surprised that we have a Next Gen MMO without a subscription model. I think the industry is starting to catch on with the releases of Hawken, Planetside 2, Mechwarrior Online and Guild Wars 2 all following the F2P format.
Bugs aside, you have to admit that GW2 has the best PvP and PvE content in the MMO market right now, and all this while being a recent release.
I don’t understand why when you go in the game you see large amounts of people enjoying the game and having fun, but when I come to the forums I see nothing but thread after thread about how GW2 fails. The forums are recently like this too, I’m starting to think that they are under attack by trolls.
The game doesn’t have a subscription, no one is forcing you to play it. Take a break if you need to, I did and came back a week later and im having more fun than ever.
It is great to see a game of this quality free to play once you’ve bought the initial game. All new games have bugs and issues but this has been pretty good and i’ve only experienced a few minor issues myself.
Best PvE content out there? no chance. I’m sorry but WoW buries all other mmo’s for content, purely because it’s been out for so long and has had a huge amount of refinement and expansion. Lots of people may now be bored of it all, but it’s a vast, well polished world(s).
However, the pve content here, so far, does seem excellent. It’s not as linear as I expected which is nice and there is more encouragment (and reward) to explore all areas. It looks good and the mobs are not as repetative and boring as some more recent MMO’s have been. The NPC’s have a bit of character and hopefully over time that will improve.
Best PvP? Thats a togh one to call as its new and largely untouched and most pvp gets messed up as developers try and ‘balance’ the game. Best pvp at launch? no chance. War had the best pvp at launch (never played daoc before ppl bring that up) and arguably Teir 1 pvp in War is the best by a million miles over other mmo’s. Sub 40’s starwars is also better. Here its too much like wow. Bish bash bosh you dead, res, repeat. Its crap.
Why do people moan rather than praise? Simple, the praisers are playing, the moaners have rage quit for 10 minutes because they’ve seen someone with 1 stat point more than them and its unfair and they are never playing the game again until they get a stat point and they want a refund and waaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaa… so they have nothing better to do until they’ve stopped having their tantrum, at which point they go back to playing.
Can I has your stuff?
Having left several mmo’s now, and two in particular that I was really looking forward to and wanted to succeed, I feel your pain. I’m not investing my soul in to this game so I’m hoping it won’t be too bad when I get to your stage.
- It’s not often a question whether somebody has better gear than others, but the implications of not having better gear:
1) Being excluded from groups because you have inadequate gear.
2) Having worse performance in PvP because you have inadequate gear.
3) In general taking more time and effort to finish tasks that were designed to be completed with better gear.
4a) Long and arduous content repetition (grind) to get into point where you’re sufficiently equipped.
4b) This grind is restricted to a certain dungeon instance in form of tokens and soulbound items..
4c) It’s incredibly frustrating when a casual player goes through all that grind only for the next expansion to put the ‘end game’ out of reach once again before they’ve had a chance to play what they’ve just worked toward.
Just sounds like the usual gear score scum bags in this game as in every other mmo. They should all be hunted down and have their ip’s universally banned from the internet as a whole.
I don’t want a gear grind or pay to win and I cant stand pvp imbalance. These are all the reasons I dont play wow, war, swtor, star trek, aion and rift.
However, given some of the recent games I have bought, this has been by far the best value for money. Sadly, games that get produced these days lack any sort of staying power. 20, 30 hours and your done. I’ll get months and months of play out of GW2, and who knows, maybe even years. So worth £40 with no monthly fee? hell yeah.
I just hit level 30 and was tempted to go for an animal form but having used the animal form potions you get I decided against it. Besides, I like fighting with my axes. Now, gimme bear form AND axes……
No, because then it would drag on and on and on and on……
champions drop loot? when did this happen? not in the entire time ive been playing have I ever seen loot from a champion.
Jumpivistas are ok in small dosses. It was a good idea taken to excess in SWTOR and that has an effect here because right from the start people will dislike them. Was doing the burning wall jumpivista last night and it was pissing me off, partly because of the high spawn rate on mobs. Still, stuck with it and got it done. Was the last one from the 100% region score.
What would bring me back… in a word
Pandas.
Hey, if they need money that fast they could always sell the game to biofail. They is just so awsome at taking on mmo’s.
Oh i’m sorry… I didn’t realise this was a pay half now for a crap product and pay more to get the rubbish fixed later on at some random time….
Besides, how does one expect a hero to fly without a cape?
LOL, it reminds me of mark and lards vague news….
+1 from me. This is bought up in every single mmo i’ve played. Surely you would think developers would have got the message by now.
Good grief, are the Sims, Half Life 2 and Minecraft really the top 3 pc games? how sad is that. PC Gamer lists the top 3 as Dues Ex, WoW and Elder Scrolls IV and that’s a pretty pants list as well. The best PC games are Monkey Island, Doom and Tie Fighter with an honourable mention to Far Cry (but not far cry 2 which was the worst PC game ever)
Wow with all the kittening and moaning from both sides of the argument I thought this would have generated more interest. Is it that good a sugestion that it cant be bad mouthed?
