Yes we are. As a thief who is mainly PVE I can tell you that doing dungeons is entirely possible (not world bosses tho, most of the dots you get kill you regardless of what you do … Jormags 2. phase for example)
So here are some basic tips:
-> Dodge a lot! You can dodge almost 4 times in a row thanks to our “Signet of Agility” which gives you a full stamina set every 30 seconds and if not some nice extra precison boost
-> You can go d/d and s/p but I came to the personal conclusion that while d/d is fun there are some more effective sets for dungeons. Try and use p/p once. With (2) you can stack Vuln. for your group and Unload (3) is my personal favorite if you got some power stacking ele or Guardian nearby plus it looks extremly cool.
SB should never be misses since you can control groups and (5) lets you evade if the situation gets risky. D/D works as well but is more suggested if gained more experience since most bosses later on can one-hit you making this set-up strong but dangerous … for you.
Oh and I would recommend you my (a little more) defensive 0/30/30/0/10 Build. 30 in shadow arts is a must in dungeons (imo) since it not only heals conditions while in stealth, you also heal urself duo the grandmaster trait. Combine this with “Shadow Refuge” which is expected of you as a thief and you got some nice back-up strategy if things get risky.
Of course that’s just my opinion but I did really well so far :-)
Regardless, hope you have fun ;-)
Well yea, Warriors are like the most unbalanced class I have ever seen. Whoever denies the fact that they can simply do everything has never logged into the game. Just look which profession every second person you pass uses.
To be completely honest, the Shadow Arts line does need some pretty significant nerfs, specifically to the Shadow’s Rejuvenation trait.
IMO it should simply be removed, and Meld in Shadows should be moved up to Grandmaster-tier.
You my good sir need to be removed from this forum, seriously.
Please think before you write. You invest 30 points to get regen (which I heard the most hardcore PVP players don’t even do) PLUS it’s not that good PLUS it already has been moved to grandmaster tier.
We don’t have health, we don’t have armor so pray excuse me but how exactly are we supposed to play with “honor”? :P This class is made to play dirty. Even it’s name suggests criminal activity. We’re no assassines, we are THIEFs.
Skill like Warrior? :-D
You mean like the ability to faceroll everything in PVE and PVP and don’t even stop to consider what you just killed? Yeah sure needs lots of skill xDDDD
I’m just saying anyone who thinks thief is underpowered is just a bad thief.
This sentence can only come from someone who just sees “power” as weapon strenth which is downright pathetic.
You do realize that p/p has no skill whatsoever that grants survivability right!? It does have that black-powder skill but there is no getting out of tough situations.
I do grant that p/p can be strong combined with high power – which is the thiefs only priority (damage) since if we don’t kill quickly, we die. You got 22k HP and how much armor you say?! Wanna know how much we get? :-D
Hmm any idea what a nightmare balance-wise it would be to bring in such a change so late into the game?
Sorry but if Anet shows us one thing, it’s that their current Balance-Team is useless or at the very least not up to the task.
Just buy full valkyrie armor with berserk trinkets for the best bang for your buck.
That’s exactly what I wanted to hear
Only question is: How much Prec/ Crit Chance do I have if “only” my weapons and my trinkets are +Prec?
There is not a single build in the current sPvP meta running SEmbrace, or, for that matter, Shadow Arts. The trait line basically turns your thief into a floppy punching bag that does virtually no damage. Anyways, the average thief stealth build has anywhere from 50 to 60 absolutely dedicated trait points that can’t go anywhere else.
If you can’t deal with a thief that is going any more than 10 points into SA in WvW, then you have a serious problem.
True. I’m 30 points into Shadow Arts bc. it’s quite useful in PVE but for everything else it’s a waste. Fact is: You loose 10 points into that line so you can get rid from condis at all. It’s like the only way to do it effectivly.
Ele (which I see as a good balanced example here) rids everyone around him from condis if he switches to water BUT can also use some other skills to do that. I’d love to heal myself whenever I switch to a certain set of weapons, I really do bc. if there’s no target close-by you can stealth on with d/d OR you don’t have that stealth-healing skill ready it’s almost bye-bye for my thief.
Hmmm if all of you speak true there is a deep gap between awesome groups who play just4fun and those who think they “informed” themselves about the current balance situation.
The solution to my/your problem is simple: If you get the feeling that you get kicked too often, open groups using the LFG system that are advitised as “Open for all classes” or something like that. I really appriciate the feature to give your group-search a name. This is a point where Anet really planned ahead.
OP, I know what you mean, seriously, finding the target at all (behind all those effects) is a pain BUT you’ll eventually get used to it and more often than not you even see really fat numbers in the middle of chaos just by pressing (5) with d/d and then auto-attack. If you aren’t attacked by the monster you try to backstab atm, there is a good chance you’re facing his back or -at least – his side. Just make sure to retreat to the shadows whenever you become the target.
Those are the sets I heard to be most effective (and which I’ll carry with me at 80 in all situations):
S/P -> Trashmobs close-up
D/D -> Bosses or single monsters
SB -> Trash mobs from a distance plus nice fields for combos + (5) is awesome to retreat away very fast
P/P -> Bosses you shouldn’t face head-on. (3) is pretty sweet and it also adds some variety – all you need is a second pistol anyways.
Nice idea but is Valkyries available for exotic Lv 80 armor? :O Couldn’t find it anywhere?!
I already use Practiced Tolerance and if you don’t expect too much from it, it really is worth your trait points, I have to say.
Valk is on the TP/WvW vendor
Oh nice, what is TP? Trading post? Is there a way to craft them yourself?
What to nerf:
Daggers and Shortbows
Why
Thief are seen using these as weapons! S.o. might geht hurt! REMOVE!
Nice idea but is Valkyries available for exotic Lv 80 armor? :O Couldn’t find it anywhere?!
I already use Practiced Tolerance and if you don’t expect too much from it, it really is worth your trait points, I have to say.
To be fair, nobody ever uses the stealth trap (and I’ve only seen the supply trap used once in actual play before). That being said, it goes to show how badly ANet hates thieves.
To be fair it has to been said that they don’t hate any class, the balance team just doesn’t have any clue what is going on.
No wait, I was wrong, watch the live stream
They seriously tell you (laughing!) that everyone needs to roll a Warrior and jape about buffing an already op skill before talking about some minor nerf. They are kids, playing the game, supporting their own favorite classes. They don’t play thief, thief was (unfortunatly) too strong in the beginnings, was nerfed and now just let alone in the woods to die. No hate, just ignorance.
‘’Hi I’m OP, everything that is remotely useful is overpowered, nerf pls ANet, ty.’’
Look beyond the horizons of your own class and open your eyes. Thief has -GOOD- condition removal, but -DEFINITELY- not OP. Please try out a warrior or a guardian before suggestion that condition cleansing on thieves are OP. Also, as has been mentioned before; Thieves generally have ~15k HP at most when roaming. Inb4 OP has no clue what he’s saying and should revise his own utmost false and invalid arguments.
Yours sincerely,
The Thief-community.

This
Yes, we can remove conditions based on ONE Trait bc. we got easy access to stealth if
we want to.
But you know what? If we don’t remove condis like really freaking fcing fast, we will even die of some poison condition.
Now look at – I don’t wanna name Warrior all the time, it’s getting boring pointing at the obvious – Guardian for exampel. Same health – so how many conditions does it take to bring him to his knees?! Like Torment and Poison and Bleed and maybe some Elite Mob facerolling him. Thief would die from any of them if he doesn’t stealth faster than you can count to 3.
I don’t think land speed by itself is really a problem for warriors, I think the problem is a lack of a flaw or weakness. Things like mesmers weakness to Condi burst or thief low surviabilty out of stealth, guardians and the choose of low damage or low survivability, necros lack of a way to deal with CC etc etc etc. You can find a weakness and use it against them as a class, this well roundedness of warriors seems to be to good and seems to cover everything.
Yup.
Warrior is like:
-Thief dps (more or less) but great surviability
-Guardian survivability but AWESOME 1200 Range (even Thief’s range ends at 900)
and the list goes on and on …
And the best part is: The more they get, the more greedy they become. You can’t throw a stone now without hitting a warrior and still players demand more and more and more.
Where does it end? Broken game in which most of the playstyles are eliminated bc. of their uselessness. Wake up before you hurt yourself.
Bc Warriors are Rangers and need to be as awesome from a distance as they are on the front line.
Are you serious? Are you not getting it? Warriors are like the most imbalanced class but you still demand more features and more buffs?
I just can’t some grinning like and idiot imagining the way some warriors sit before their easy-as-s*it-to-play-class and saying like “OMG! Bow speed is so slow! We can’t even do the same dmg Rangers do! That’s so unfair …!” xD
@Spine
You didn’t listen: He can’t even prove himself bc. he’s DIRECTLY kicked out of a group.
@OP
I know what you mean man :/
I love my thief but it seems as if I have chosen the entirely wrong class to play as at the moment. Our survivability doesn’t allow us to play the way we’re supposed to play in PVE so we practice some survival-bulls**t instead. We can stealth but the only thing ppl. see in this feature is the way it works when we run away from them, stealing them their glory of killing us.
In a way the first class I leveled to max (Mesmer) seems to be the only class ingame that works the way it should: Ok damage but great support and many ways to stay alive. Thief is also really nice to play but if some tank class like Warrior almost does the samage dps work we do, where’s the fun in taking the ultimate risk of hiring a thief?!
And you know what the worst part is here? I don’t see how thief will become better to play (mainly PVE) any time soon.
Hey there! Looking for an exotic set that gives me more or less
Power/Precision and Vitality
It seems as if there is no exotic armor with those 3 combined so I would like to know if you know any set that is aquireable that combines those 3 stats in a constructive way – I’m also not quite sure which accesoires to pick :/
Advise would be mostly welcome!
Edit: Power and Prec are more important than Vitality of course but I don’t wanna skip vitality completly since I’d like to have at least 13,000-14,000 HP on me in PVE
The new story event is a joke. Laggy as hell and the best part is: For every non-heavy-armor wearer it’s just dying over and over and over again without even seeing what is going on.
Toughness – None
It’s just not worth it imo. You need really much Tough to even feel some difference.
Vit – > I plan on adding some Power/Prec/Vit Items to my lv 80 equip.
The reason is simple: While condi damage ignores toughness, health actually saves you a lot more in this game. I can’t count the times my thief couldn’t stealth (and heal condis) fast enough and a condition – such as torment or poison killed me off.
While you don’t even notice toughness unless you invest pretty fcing much in it, your thief will thank you for every hp point he got later on.
Ah and if you invest in Prec – like every thief should – consider the trait that gives you 7% of your Prec as HP. It’s not thaaaat much but it’s much better to have 2k extra hp than to have none.
AAAAnd the question is: Why perma stealth?! Apart from running around the world invisible there is just no point in it.
What about warriors? They can have berserker stance, dolyak signet, cleansing ire trait, all of which can remove condi quickly, plus thieves have low health, taking away their condi removal means making the class quite under powered.
^
Yup.
Op, think before you write and look at how many option a thief has to remove a condi, would you?
Now, do you see what I’m trying to say?! We just don’t have the Hp pool to survive and condition for too long. Give us 18,800 base Hp instead of 11,000 and we talk again
Sad fact is:
- it won’t change people’s opinion about zerker gear
AND
- thief really is the full zerker class. what we do is low survivability VS high dmg.
At this point I’m gonna say it: Just remove some stat-sets from certain gears. Like wtf are Tanker-classes such as Warrior (and more so Guardians) doing with thos zerger stats?! Should be forbidden and we wouldn’t have the problem.
Thiefs do look a little OP when played right – sad fact is, they aren’t as anyone who plays one can tell you. The 10% dmg nerf is going to be a disaster because … no, it won’t ruin the class for me but it will kill the purpose of the class little by little.
At this point we really would need somd balance patch that goes like this: Dmg decrease on any class BUT thief (and maybe ele).
Look at how Anet talks about thief on their livestreams
NO ONE of the balance team really plays a thief to begin with – how do we expect them to balance out the issue that comes with just watching good thiefs really using their full potential?!
Balancing this game around PVP is a sad and fat mistake – it always has been and it always will be.
Yeah, she’s right telling you what to do and you need to lis….. eh no wait, it’s not :O Actually it’s not his/her godkitten bussiness for how much damage you hit
Ever heard the sentence: It’s just a game?
Play as you want
As long as you have fun, the others can go home and cry for themselves.
Sometimes stacking is for boons, but sometimes it’s also to keep all of the monsters clustered together for people with AOEs and cleaves, as well as making it easier to pick someone up without having to move.
If someone is doing backflips over in a corner and being impossible to ress, as well as dragging trash everywhere, that will kitten off a lot of people. It’s particularly important in dungeons like CoE that people stay close together.
Ok thanks.
But thiefs are not supposed to stack might, are they?! I mean we do have venoms but no one can possibly expect us to use a venom-might-stack build?!
He probably wanted you stand on top of everyone else.
Meaning he wanted me to take all the might they could offer me so I could rampage?! If that would have been the case I gladly would have done that :O
QUESTION!
Today I did my first thief-dungeon-run. Putting aside the fact that I used sb and only went for d/d when I felt a little suicidle, it went well.
Well actually it was the second trun that went fine – the first I was kicked from bc. someone told me “(my nick) stack!” and when I asked what exactly I had to do s.o. called me noob and kicked me.
So yea …
1. horrible community
2. what did he want from me? Thiefs are not supposed to stack might are they?!
It’s not as if I expect everyone in this game to be polite but the changes which I noticed during this last year … well I’d say it’s just pathetic.
It’s as if some people play this game as if it would make them better in real life. Their reactions are not just childish but worse than everything I have ever noticed in any game I have ever played.
- You get insulted being new to a class on a STORY run which wasn’t advertised as some kind of expert-session
- During social events like the snowball match if your team lies 100 points behind everyone just group-quits
a.s.o.
I’m just interested what you think about this :/ It really worries me to tell you the truth. A community like this can ruin the whole game.
Wow Anet, are you serious? Is this your answer? I’ve watched your livestream and omg, are you guys even trying? Joking about your own balance, telling us how OP some classes are and how everyone needs to roll a warrior?! If you can’t fix your own mistakes, at least don’t joke about this! Seriously!
LOl? Sb works just as it should in PVE but in PVP it’s a joke. Whoever gets killed by a sb should leave PVP right on the spot!
Maybe it’s not worth opening a topic for this matter but I need to get my opinion out after playing mostly every class now and at last finding thief as my fav professsion (just like the way he plays plus he has no CDs and you really need to manage your ini).
We hear screaming, we hear shouting but something is off about all this crying cursing.
- The thief is meant to be the highest dps class, playing the most risky game of all profession being forced to play close to enemies by nearly having no reassurance beside stealth to get some distance
→ Warriors are like Thiefs highly dps classes BUT they can’t be supposed to be that strong since they balance their gameplay by best armor+hp pool ingame*
Now there comes all this screaming how high the damage of a thief is and Anet (who seems to get more clueless with every patch they’re throwing at us) takes away more and more damage leaving us as one of the most risky classes with damage on par with classes who are not supposed to be damage-dealers in the first place.
That is what I call some broken balance.
I’m not trying to tell you that thiefs are supposed to be on perma stealth or anything whatsoever but if we don’t do the highest damage, there is absolutly no way the game works as it should.
Cutting our damage cuts our surviability leaving us dead. We can’t win long fights, that’s not how the class is build. We win quickly or we don’t win at all but we can’t win with second best armor, least Hp and mediocre damage and that is what most other players not playing thief just don’t get.
And now try to believe in Anet, watch the livestream and see those- I dunno, I lost all my words the moment I saw them – laughing and joking about the fact that everyone needs to roll a warrior because they’re so strong TOTALLY FORGETTING the fact that it’s their fault warrior ended like this!
I already feel better having said this
^
That’s actually a really good tip.
Thief, like some other professions (looking especially at Mesmer and Ele), is a class you can only learn by doing. It works radically diffrent from all the others professions.
Mostly because
- there is no cd. You need to learn how to manage your Ini
- you have to rely on stealth really often.
- you’ll trade in good survivabilty for good damage and disspear in thin air in a heartbeat
→ This results in maybe the most “high-risk-high-reward” class I have ever seen in any videogame I have ever played. GW2 is already a game where numbers climb and fall really quickly but thief crosses even that line by constantly cheating death. Look at it as Warrior – just instead of “easy mode” it’s “hard mode” minus the unbelievable amount of button-presses the ele requires (you need to press buttons but Ele needs 4 more since you rely on 4 elements instead of stealth).
I’d say it’s easly one of the more enjoyable classes (it’s debateable if thief’s state at the moment needs some reword tho) but not for everyone. Wanna trade in brute aggression for elegance and acrobatics? Welcome to our flock!
I can’t help you with PVP that much since I prefer PVE but here are some general thief tips which helped me:
- d/d is good against solo targets. Stealth yourself with 5 and use 1 on the backside or your opponent for some nasty backstab. But beware: PVE in open world you better pack some gooood Power/Prec stuff or it’s not worth your time
- Shortbow is awesome in PVE. Poison everyone and then use 2 to send out grenades. Don’t forget to detonate them midair on the pack at your heels – it’s well worth your time. (5) is nice to get away in any situation if some monster pins you on the spot
- Sword/Pistol works fine – try (3) and (5) to see why
Also: Healing Signet of Malice will get better than you think at first. Use it in combination with your (2) shortbow to heal chunks of HP on trash mobs or (3) on d/d (Deadly Blossom). If you go with it also consider daggerstorm as your elite since spinning while getting Hp for every hit makes you an indestructable storm of daggers – NICE.
ARGH!
<
Whenever Anet trys to solve something, they kill of other classes – just not Warrior! It’s always Ele and Thief that suffer the most. Can’t believe anyone there is payed for what they do!
Yup, we’re OP and that’s why 90% of any player you pass bein’ a warrior
Thiefs, guys, thiefs are every….. uhm ne no wait, they’re not.
What ppl think to be “unfair” is our high dps because they don’t (f*cing) get that we play the maybe most risky class in game. We go into melee with the least HP and just medium armor?!
And here we have the problem: We just don’t get each other very well.
You wanna know what I as a thief think kinda unfair? Warriors! Hell are they OP!
Please anyone, before complaining play the class before you actually start screaming. Aside the fact that thiefs have to do really hard to play in PVE dungeon groups, we have NOTHING beside that stealth-mechanic and once we reveal ourselfs we better speed up the game or we’re done fore. I know that backstab is strong (really strong just if you go full dps which is – let me tell you – a pain in the kitten since you’ll die from anything) but that’s why I like the already implemented reveal debuff.
-> Chain attacks still hit us (hard)
That’s what ppl don’t get: Thief is a very risky high-risk-high-reward class. We maybe can end fights more quickly but if you take backstab away we’re more or less done for.
I have to say that I’m indeed a little worried. So far Anet has proven kinda poor regarding their balance. I hate that they go on nerfing the wrong stuff. Sure, zerker is a really big problem looking at how speed-run everything has to be in dungeons BUT how about balancing the classes themselves which use crit?! Like WARRIOR for christ’s sake!
They should stark giving higher critical damage the lighter your armor is. Look at it as a back-around balance of the fact that, beside the fact that they lied about how every class in this MMO can be anything, the lighter armor you wear in this game, the harder it is to survive … or classes with the worst HP pool hit the hardest … like hell, this IS normaly why they have so low HP. We have the lowest HP and middle-class armor and Warriors hit as hard as we do … where’s the balance in that?!
(edited by Swimfan.8014)
So it has nothing to do with you. World bosses usually tend to be only for lv80s for the rare/exotic drops.
Yeah I’m still a little annoyed how Arenanet manages to kitten off new players with their unfair-hard-difficult fights in way-too-low-level areas.
Just like explo modes in dungeons: You’d be a fool or a heavy-armor class to take them on at the level they are displayed.
^
Hm yea I think I’ll use steal more often after I have learned all the items that I can steal. Some really strong thief I know told me that he didn’t use stealing either until he reached much higher level. Sometimes it’s about some fun … why not add random boon/attack to the already thrilling high risk-high reward package we call thief?!
i’ve always gone with 15 acrobatics instead of trickey. if you already have high crit%, there’s no need for more fury from stealing. also, i’d drop the shadow arts XI. it’s not worth it. ;p
The only thing I’m certain of regarding my thief is that I want those 20% extra damage :P
I’m really getting tired of this: An enemy attacks me, I dodge with D/D 3, the enemy attacks me again, I want to try to dodge again too with 3 but even by pressing at the right moment he still waits til dagger auto attack animation is done and jumps too late -> result: I get struck.
How do you deal with it? It’s definitly not lag, since I can time other skills on other professions too. I really suffer from waiting for the last animation ending. It’s just 1/4 sec dodge, and if its so random it’s nearly impossible to use.
Is there a trick?
tyvm >.<
Uhm no, there isn’t imo.
I quit relying on (3) at low-level like every other thief I know did. You can sure use it sometimes but don’t bet your life on it since it has no golden value anyways:
- damage is not that useful
- it costs you ini you could spend somewhere else
- it has no hidden purpose like jumping really wide to reach the next monster (like heartseeker also does in a way)
AND last but not least – monsters turn around as fast as you so thinking you’d be on the monsters backside by the time deadly blossom is over is the first thing that proves false about this attack.
That’s just my opinion but I think (3) is sadly (cool animation tho) the most useless attack the thief has on d/d – even behind that dagger-throw.
Ok here’s the official class description of thief:
Experts at stealth and surprise, thieves can move through the shadows, vanish into thin air, or steal items from their opponents and use them as weapons. Thieves practice an agile, acrobatic fighting style, which can make them very hard to hit.
It’s not as if thiefs can handle any situation on their own like some other classes can.
As I said somewhere before: The reason you think thiefs are unfair is bc. they kill faster than any other class in the game … which is what they are meant to do (if they aren’t even trumphed by warriors in dps at the moment) but on the counterside, they also die REALLY REALLY fast.
So if you want to eliminate even one mechanic to stealth or evade, you need to give thiefs MUCH more armor and MUCH more health (I still think that thief having lowest HP pool beside Ele and Guardian is bullshöt).
I love every class by my side.
Kicking someone bc. of their class is exacly what is wrong with this zerg-and-grind-loving community.
Take this snowball-PVP-wintersdayevent for example: If your team is even 100 points behind mostly everyone just quits! O_o WTH It’s not as if the losing team wouldn’t get some reward as well and btw what do they expect? Restart the event?! As if someone in the winning team would make space for them.
That’s also the problem with some ppl. getting kicked from a party: Because the rest of the party is just dumb as bread and doesn’t see the game as a place to have fun but as a pure competition.
What to nerf: Thiefs armor – just let him wear nothing for christ’s sake!
Why: If Warriors hits thiefs, they don’t die in 2 hits :/ That’s just not what these awesome warriors can! Who wants an opponent that can’t be facerolled?! Tell me!
Some advice needed:
10 points into Trickery or 10 to Acrobatics?
Trickery would let me steal and give me some buffs + Ini with 10 points into it
VS
Acrobatics means some Vitality (always needed on thief) + Vigor reg when healing OR really fast running while in stealth.
What do you think?
Let’s see:
→ In most cases thief needs a few hits to be downed
→ In PvP it can be easily avoided by using range (why not some skills that make range a little more must-have?!) and by other methods as well
So no, not op by a long shoot. It’s a good skill – espcially for PVE bc that’s where it shines and that’s where the thiefs need some more buffing (survivability).
Print creates .jps when I press it :O
At first I thought I changed some function ingame but there is non that says “screenshot format” or whatsoever.
