So I’ve been a fan of the Karmic Converter ever since I started using it. It’s become one of the highlights of my daily routine, and is especially exciting when something rare pops up, even if it’s not the most profitable drop I get that day. After using it for a while, I started noticing some common patterns. So I tracked what appeared in the shop UI for a month, and I found something that might be mildly interesting.
Previously, sources (mostly consisting of the wiki page) indicated that drops looked like this.
- One of: Bag of Obsidian (Normal/Medium/Large)
- Two of: Something else
After observing the drop rates, I can say with confidence that drops look more like this.
- One of: Bag of Obsidian (Normal/Medium/Large)
- One of: Rune Bag (Masterwork/Rare), Sigil Bag (Masterwork/Rare), or Bag of Gear (Masterwork/Rare)
- One of: Karmic Crafting Bag (Tiny/Small/Light/Medium/Large/Heavy), Bag of Ascended Mats (Dragonite/Empyreal/Bloodstone), Trophy Bag (Fine/Masterwork/Rare), Bag of Scrap, Bag of Educational Supplies, Box of WvW Supplies, or Bag of Jewels.
I’m sure I’m not the first person to have noticed this pattern, but I’m hoping to be the first person to have written it down. I’ve updated the wiki page to reflect this research. However, I’m not skilled enough to know how to split the Drop Research page into 3 separate tables. If someone could make that happen, that would help tremendously with further research.

It’s been a couple of weeks now since my client started asking me to sign up for SMS authentication. I’ve tried to do this a few times, but every time I enter Google Voice number, I get the following error message.
“This phone number was not recognized. Please check your number and try again.”
There isn’t much to this page, and I’ve checked over what little is there. Everything seems to be in order. Any idea why this page wouldn’t like my 10 digit number?
Minor bug, high visibility. 1440p resolution, borderless windowed. Scaling character high down brings it back below the top, but maximum height goes right back out of the viewport.
Seconded. Personal level 10, did a level 11 Fractal run, I got neither my daily achievement chest, nor my pristine relic bonus chest. If it makes a difference, I did not play through the entire sequence. I joined up just as the first round was ending. I played through the entire second round, third round, and boss round.
Reward for Daily Queensdale Event Complete is a Chest of the Hero, which reads the following:
Double click to open. Contains 1 Sip of Liquid Karma and 2 Scrolls of Experience.
At a brief glance, my expectation from this chest was to receive 2 Scrolls of Knowledge, the skill point item. Instead, the chest contains 2 Writs of Experience, the new exp item that appears to provide 5% of your exp bar like the old system did. Other chests specifically mention Writ of Experience instead of Scroll of Experience, so I believe this to be unintended.
This – “Thank you for interesting build variety” – made me laugh. ;P
That was probably one of the more direct points in my post. Builds in FFXIV are some of the most boring I’ve ever seen. Gear is horrendously uninteresting, and there is exceptionally little that makes two of any given class stand out from one another. Between weapons, slot skills, traits, runes, sigils, and gear sets, I am plenty happy with the variety that GW2 has to offer.
Build variety is there. Notice that no build is top-tier in all modes, and all professions do have multiple meta builds in all areas right now (save Necromancer for PvE). Granted, for most professions “multiple” means “two.”
More importantly, all of these builds play quite differently from one another.
Well said
I’ve been two timing my MMOs lately. That’s right, I’ve been playing FFXIV alongside GW2. The GW2 community is pretty quick to pounce on ArenaNet when they make mistakes, and there have certainly been a number of notable mistakes recently. But in playing FFXIV, I am constantly reminded of all the things that ArenaNet did so amazingly well with GW2. And with FFXIV in 24 hour maintenance right now, I feel like it is a very appropriate time to highlight some of those things.
And I will quite gladly start with that one. Thank you ArenaNet for having the best kitten servers in the MMO market. Thank you for designing your servers to have no downtime for maintenance. Thank you for having tons of cross server functionality so I can play with my friends regardless of what server they’re on. Thank you for designing Megaservers as a fantastic means of dealing with zone population highs and lows.
Thank you ArenaNet for horizontal progression. Thank you for making the Ascended gear I worked so hard to get always be relevant. Thank you for a fantastically designed Wardrobe system that allows me to continue with long terms goals even after I have top tier gear.
Thank you ArenaNet for the Living Story. Thank you for designing your new storylines in pleasantly consumable two week chunks. Thank you for all the subtle things that happen throughout Tyria in between them. Thank you for your continued dedication to the vast lore of the Guild Wars universe. Thank you for having the balls to destroy the game’s central hub.
Thank you for streamlined questing and dynamic events. Thank you for seamless level sync and percentage based exp. Thank you for interesting build variety and all of the options to make that possible. Thank you for the best player market interface I’ve ever seen in an MMO. Thank you for allowing your real money store to utilize in game currency. Thank you for allowing players to craft from their bank. Thank you for a solid travel system. Thank you for voicing most of your game. Thank you for achievement rewards. Thank you for letting me multitask UI windows. Thank you for rewarding exploration. Thank you for your low commitment subscription free model.
Thank you for continuing to do what you do.
Thank you ArenaNet.
This drove me to madness for far too long. Here’s where the four locations are.
-One is on the path beyond the air/white/high jump crystal. Don’t just up, just follow the path around the side. If you’re stuck after the device is destroyed, just make a leap of faith and Kas will port you.
-Two are fairly trivial to find in the last area of the mission. I’m not really sure how to describe their locations, but they shouldn’t be hard to find if you’re keeping an eye out.
-The last one is also in the last mission area, in the northern part of the map. Beyond where you fight one of the vets, there is a pile of wreckage, and if you look through some openings in that wreckage, you should find the last one.
Spidy actually lays this out really well for individual pieces, assuming that you have no mats to start with. For example, Zojja’s Doublet would currently cost around 102g.
So I have 7 toons, all female, all different professions. There’s a certain pattern I’ve used on all of their names from launch. The first name is always Thala, and the second name is something representative of their profession, ending in -a or -ia. Here are some examples.
ELE: Thala Elementia
MES: Thala Illusia
GRD: Thala Paladina
RNG: Thala Sniperia
ENG: Thala Machina
THF: Thala Coverta
Back when I was first playing, I decided I wanted to give Warrior a try. During character creation, I drew a complete blank when it came to naming her. In a moment of weakness, I settled on Thala Waria.
Ugh.
While there’s a certain elegance to the way it worked out with my Elementalist, the Warrior equivalent just sounds lame. And now that I’ve been recently leveling up my Warrior, it’s bothering me more and more. So with the name contract sale, I thought I’d go ahead and address that. The problem is that I seem to be having as much creativity as I did way back when, and I’m struggling to come up with any solid ideas. The one thought that crossed my mind was Thala Berserkia, but I don’t want the name to imply that I’m geared with zerks, especially when I haven’t decided whether or not I’m gonna build her for DPS come end game.
So, any ideas? tl;dr: I’m looking for something that fits the general theme of the Warrior profession that sounds cool and fits the pattern of the rest of my toons.
That…makes way too much sense. I haven’t done medium or heavy ascended sets yet, but I most certainly failed to consider ascended level insignias when I was considering all the things. Well then! Thanks for helping me clear that up.
There’s gotta be something I’m missing from this line of thought. Scrap/section prices look like this.
Jute: 1s19c
Rawhide: 31c
Wool: 4s29c
Thin: 64c
Cotton: 2s84c
Coarse: 1s84c
Linen: 5s88c
Rugged: 3s52c
Silk: 2s10c
Thick: 20c
Gossamer: 3s40c
Hardened: 38c
I can make absolutely no sense out of this. Cloth is used for light armor, which is used by 3 jobs. Leather is used for medium armor, which is used by 3 jobs. Both are only obtainable by salvaging and bags, not from resource nodes. Cloth is used for for insignias, but it’s not really the cloth components that make insignias valuable, certainly not enough to justify such a drastic difference.
So what gives? Why is the demand for cloth so much stronger than the demand for leather when they’re uses and obtainability are reasonably similar?
You know, now that I’m sitting here thinking about it, I realize that I don’t actually do a whole lot of active farming. It’s really just a side effect of what I do to enjoy myself in the game. At a minimum, I never miss my dailies, and that always result in some monetary increase. But some days I’ll make less than 1g, some days I can burst 20-30g. It all depends on what I feel like doing, since most everything in the game is rewarding. If I feel like WvWing, I’ll come out with a nice amount of champ bags. Same if I feel like joining an organized BB. Some days I feel like doing world bosses, which leaves me with a nice amount of guaranteed rares. Sometimes a guildy will say “Anyone wanna do some dungeons?” and I’ll end up with a bunch of dungeon loot. I’ve recently taking a liking to perfecting BL key runs, which doesn’t always result in large numbers but will at least get me something. And sometimes I even just like wandering around a map and grabbing as many resource nodes as I can (disclaimer: only possible thanks to infinite use tools), and even that will net me 1-2g in profits. I’m actively crafting ascended gear, doing at least some 1/day mats, so the actual numbers at the bottom of the screen always fluctuate, but it’s kinda cool to think that just about everything I do in the game is not only rewarding, but also universally valuable.
I actually had this issue happen with Jormag recently. I was able to read the crash report and see that it was a memory error. Apparently, a megaserver’s worth of players charging towards a ginormous dragon on max graphic settings has been the first thing I’ve ever encountered that required more than 8GB of memory (to be fair, with a total of 3 displays and a number of other open windows). My solution was to buy another 8GB of memory, and I haven’t had a problem since.
If anyone at ANet is putting a list together, I’d like to add my name to it. I’ve had the meta completed for well over a month, and I ended with 100% completion on all tournament achievements. I’m not in any particular hurry, but would certainly like to see a reward one day
I swear, the most common complaint I must hear from the GW2 community is “I’m mad that ArenaNet removed this stupidly exploitative farming method”. Why do people keep expecting them to stay?
Alternatively, if you have a few characters you use much or are willing to let sit for a while, the Aetherblade JP in southwest(ish) Gendarren Fields drops 2 Shards a day per character that opens it. (So far for me anyway)
So after trying some methods suggested, I’ve found this one to be the most efficient. It’s not really fast, but it’s resulted in the most progress, particularly with two points previously unmentioned. First, with Megaservers, it is possible to open the JP chest more than once per day per character. Second, while 2 shards are (as far as I can tell) guaranteed to drop, there is also a rare drop that provides 15 shards instead. We’ll see what the Festival brings to the table for people in my shoes, but that aside, this is probably going to be my best bet. Thanks again!
Promotion with sprockets?

This had caught my eye, but as far as I can tell, the only ways to obtain Watchwork Sprockets are tied to Living World events. Am I mistaken?
So this has been my first tournament. I was there at the start, wide eyed and eager to fight for the pride of my server. Throughout April, I poured as much effort as I could into the tournament. But for the past week or two, I’ve started dreading the experience. The feeling of obligation to put in as much time as you possibly can, taking away from many other aspects of the game, is really starting to get to me. Two months is just a long kitten time, and I don’t think it should be that way for future tournaments. I would rather see a series of 10 three day matches over one month, rather than the 8 one week matches we’re seeing this time around.
What are your thoughts on the length of the current tournament, and what do you think should happen in that regard for future tournaments?
So I guess it’s best to start by saying that I effectively missed Living World in it’s entirety. I only recently discovered that the Spinal Blades series of back pieces are a thing, and I excitedly began my quest to farm 925 Blade Shards. I spent some time over at the jumping puzzle at Gendarran Fields, but found myself quickly discouraged. While I wouldn’t call it an optimal farming strategy, I seem to be lucky if I manage to get 5 shards in an hour (with roughly 100% MF), and completing the puzzle gave me a whopping 2 more. Is there a better location to farm Aetherblades and get shards? I’ve heard both Fractals and Twilight Arbor mentioned, but I’m not much of a dungeoner, and I’d prefer to avoid those if possible, especially if the drop rate is not notably better.
Thanks!
I forget what it was, but something recently caught my eye about Wildstar. My interest rose as I looked into it, and that interest very suddenly plummeted when I saw the traditional purchase + subscription model. It’s been proven plenty of times over that modern MMOs don’t need to follow this archaic model to succeed, and I just can’t see myself supporting such practices these days.
I’m seeing some inconsistent information on this. The Feature Pack included the change to ascended gear from Souldbound to Account Bound. Did that include the Spinal Blades series of back pieces? I’ve been debating going down that path, but if the ascended tier items are still soulbound, I may as well just do Quiver of Swift Flight.
Thanks!
You throw them into the mystic forge first. You only get a quater of the number of items, but depending on how you value karma it is still worthwhile.
Aha, that makes sense! Thanks!
I came across this thread and went to try it myself. I have a stupid question. How do you salvage these karma items? I’ve tried a few of them, and every time, both a Crude and Mystic salvage kits highlight the karma item in red and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong, or did ANet update it so you can’t do this anymore?
Logged in to Rata Sum, immediately had 4/5 completed: Daily Events, Leveler, Daily Mists Invasion Defender, and Recycler. All of these are things I would have completed passively within the past 24 hours, but Daily Kills was also at 0/50. I went and completed Shiverpeaks Killer and got my reward chest and monthly credit.
For what its worth, I was also among those who experienced a Daily reset on patch day. I had no issues with yesterday’s Daily.
So in my ventures into Cooking, I’ve tried a few times now to make some money off of tray items. They require a pretty hefty investment with a mystic forge recipe, but the profit margins wouldn’t take too long to make that money back. Or, at least, that would be the case, if tray items ever sold. I’ve never successfully sold a single one on the seller’s market, the buyer’s market is never profitable, and it seems like an ever increasing exercise in futility. Given their utility, this surprises me quite a bit. What is it about tray items that makes them so hard to sell?
It took the wardrobe system to get me interested in skins and cosmetics. Big thank you to ANet for that! One thing I noticed while playing with it last night was that there were a number of moments while looking through gear, especially for head and hand pieces, where I thought to myself “What just changed?”. A lot of equipment pieces are very detail oriented, and it was frequently unclear as to what the features of a particular piece actually were. My natural reaction to this was to hover my mouse over the Equipment Preview window and scroll my mouse wheel up, but all this did was zoom in my in game character camera.
To help with the Equipment Preview experience, I would like to see two features implemented. The first is the ability to zoom in and out within the Equipment Preview window. The second is the ability to resize the Equipment Preview window, and have your character model scale to the window size. These features would make the Equipment Preview experience closer to character creation, which I think would be great for checking out skins in the wardrobe.
Likewise. I was doing Dailies in Bloodtide Coast, hit 4/5, decided to take a break, hit Heart of the Mists, warped to Vigil, and somewhere along the lines everything was reset, including 5 completed monthlies. Went back to Bloodtide Coast to check, and everything was still reset.
Back in January, a complete set of tools went on sale. The was reduced significantly, but you had to buy the entire set.
Great! That would fit my interests perfectly, so I’ll wait for another one of those. Thanks!
I came back recently and I noticed the Frost Wasp Logging Tool in the gem store. Apparently infinite gathering tools are a thing now, and I’ve been debating their value. This is the exact kind of thing I would typically wait to go on sale, but research shows that infinite gathering tools have always been limited time items. Does that mean they don’t go on sale and will always be 1000 gems?
Thanks!
I’ll try to keep the details brief. I’m coming back after about a year, and I would like to adjust my play style towards an optimal ranged DPS build. I once thought Ele would be capable of accomplishing this, but the only way to play an optimal Ele is to make the best use of all your attunements, and the simple truth is that I’m not good enough to juggle 25 different skills and adapt them for the best situation. So Ele aside, I’m wondering where the best place to invest some effort would be. I’d like to just throw on some Zerks or Assassins and just go to town from a distance, but I’d also like to do reasonably well soloing if I need to. Off the top of my head, here’s what I’m thinking.
-Longbow or Shortbow Ranger
-Longbow or Rifle Warrior
-Pistol/Pistol Thief
But given that I’m kind of out of touch with the current state of the game, I’m not really sure which of these would be best, and I don’t really have the time to invest play into all of them. Any thoughts on what I should go for? Other suggestions are welcome as well.
Thanks!
This is…a few steps more complicated than I was expecting. It’s not terrible, but when you have the fantastic “Join in [zone]” interface for getting to a specific overflow, why can’t they use that same interface to let me play with my friends in Yaks Bend? That’s all I ever really wanted out of guesting…
