Backend Repository?

Hi,

I’m just wondering if there is a backend repository somewhere of all the game updates with world read access? I am trying to set up a linux box to act as an update server for all of my applications that way I do not have to download the same files multiple times. I plan to use a cron job to rsync the update files once a day. If an Anet employee could provide me a link to such a directory I would be much appreciative!

For a game with a primarily cosmetic reward model, stop being so stingy with cosmetic rewards for playing the game. Bare minimum we should be seeing one ingame skin for every gem store skin.

Or even a chance of it dropping in the game (and being tradeable) so that we have a chance of getting everything simply by playing the game. Even buying 400 gems with just in game money is kind of ridiculous when you have a limited time to do so. Make the gliders have a small chance to drop/tradeable on the tp and now I can save up that gold over a longer time and actually buy it.

I don’t understand how necros can compare a Master Major trait to an Adept Minor trait. If you *have* to have VP for a full rotation in shroud while standing in safety then shroud drains way too fast. If you *have* to have VP for a full rotation in shroud because you are taking a ton of damage, then I don’t think that VP is an integral part of your class. Warriors rely on combos of skills from our two weapon sets. No other class relies on weapon swap nearly as much as warrior does. It is essentially our class mechanic, at least in the eyes of the players. Still no word on how the Devs feel about it.

FH is what’s bringing every zerk, condi, hybrid, and bunker build to Discipline. Let’s explore some non-Discipline combos for a while.

That’s basically how I feel. No matter the build (and I argue especially for condi builds, but that’s another post) you have to have FH. That limits our build diversity, and even pigeon holes us into situations where you have "GS/A+S only viable build?" posts. I also think the reason why condi builds aren’t explored as deeply as they could be with the new zerker spec is because every zerker spec requires FH still. So you take zerker+discipline then....Arms? And lose Defense or Tactics? Okay so you have no sustain or cleanse whatsoever for PvP. That’s a terrible build. Without being tied into FH to fully execute our profession mechanics we could start to explore different builds and might even see some build variety.

Keep this post alive, let’s see why the Devs believe FH shouldn’t be baseline. I’m more curious than I am complaining or calling them out for it. I’d just like to hear their thoughts. They have a much larger perspective than most of us when it comes to this game, so I think they may be able to provide some concrete insight into why FH should not be baseline.

Thank you everyone for constructive criticism on both the positives and negatives of a baseline Fast Hands trait. I really do appreciate this post not becoming a flame war where we might run the risk of the mods shutting it down. Honestly, I just wanted to make this post to get a dev to reply about Fast Hands. Even a simple yes or no to the following question:

Do you see Fast Hands as a necessity to many Warrior builds? Or do you think that Fast Hands should remain a choice among builds for warriors?

Fast Hands is such a hot button issue in the Warrior subforum, but (at least to my knowledge/search) we have yet to get an official Dev response as to why Fast Hands is not or will not become baseline. Do they think it will make Wars too OP? Do they believe traits are balanced around having to take discipline in PvP for Fast Hands? What is the reasoning? Are we not allowed to know the thought process behind this?

Is it bugged or a permanent change? If it’s permanent then all I’m going to say is: Everyone just play Warrior. I’ve been a warrior since day 1 (and only a warrior) and having Leg Specialist back to the way it was, along with the current Hammer meta (with the most OP trait in the game: Unsuspecting Foes) makes for an unbeatable class. If you can’t win as a warrior with a broken leg specialist and unsuspecting foes I’m not sure you should be playing any video games.

Seems like a bug, no mention in patch notes. When the ICD was added it got mentioned in the patch notes. Also did Opportunist keep its ICD? Although that one doesn’t really matter.

I just don’t understand how something that has been in code for so long was accidentally deleted. That’s just kitten poor programming, borderline ignorance.

Mesmers were holding off zergs from taking towers. It’s already been fixed. Let’s move on.

This thread is not to argue the bug that happened in the Oct. 15th patch regarding Mesmer Chaos Storm falling damage, but to discuss if a mechanic based on falling, would be a good addition to the overall WvW Meta!

And he answered it. One person was holding off an entire zerg from taking towers. In simple terms: No.

But, but, but, but it’s fun, and you can predict the matchup you will have so you don’t have to be afraid of facing a server +/- 6 ranks from you and having a boring week in WvW. Why would Anet ever want a matchup to be like this?

Been trying to say for months now that this is the way it should be, long before people were QQing about "stale matchups". Well I’m glad that those QQers are long gone (they weren’t staying to begin with) and now we are stuck with this stupid system. And now leagues with no concept of what good competition is from Anet. It’s like a ranked college football team going against an unranked team. Not fun for either team and no one takes it seriously. Glad that’s what your great WvW has come down to Anet!

I can personally tell you, that as a member of Yak’s Bend, who should win league #2 because of how number imbalances work

Gz on tanking better than us. Though with the prospect of Devon on the receiving end of a spike as the grand reward of Silver, who know what will happen next week.

Wasn’t bragging about being top server in the #2 league. Just as salty about the league system as you are. As far as I am concerned, more fun to get roflstomped than do the stomping. At least when you have +0 ppt you can fight for something. What is there to do at +695 ppt? Guard spawns? Whew so fun. Thanks Anet for killing the fun in light of Achievements. Can’t believe PvEr’s have put up with this Achievement bullkitten for so long.

Oh I agree. Cannot wait to face T1 servers. Will be excellent weeks to farm the next legendary or catch up on unplayed games in my steam library.

I bet they put you up against T1 servers 3 different weeks, and T2 servers 3 different weeks. Effectively killing WvW for 6 weeks. Would you really be surprised? I wouldn’t. If only BP/YB could have their own little WvW where we have somewhat equal forces.

I will be on NSP throughout the duration of the season. And I will be getting the meta achievement.

Devon you’re completely out of touch with the WvW playerbase. We are not some PvE crowd determined to get the next carrot on a stick Achievement. We want good fights, good competition, and the ability to create our own fun. We don’t need direction, and we don’t need guidance. We don’t want players to be forced to WvW because they are Achievement chasing care bears. We want WvW to have the mechanics to be it’s own fun.

That’s where you have dropped the ball. WvW has been limited by the core game of GW2 (how events work/reward, culling [for the first 6 months], npc scaling, etc), yet instead of working on breaking WvW out of that shell so you can do some cool things (REWARD people for defense, it’s the only way to get people to do it.) you give us PvE driven content. Are you even sure there is a WvW development team? Or is it just one person, Devon Carver, who takes things made for PvE (meta achievements) and creates a WvW variation of them?

I can personally tell you, that as a member of Yak’s Bend, who should win league #2 because of how number imbalances work, I will not be trying to get any Meta Achievement. I will be trying to find out how I can have fun when we have a +695 ppt against the lowest ranked servers. Achievements =/= fun for PvPers. Truly open and fierce PvP = fun for PvPers. Keep the Achievements in PvE.

  2. - You’ve obviously not gotten a recipe drop from a dungeon yet. You can make a ton of money by crafting the dungeon recipes and selling them on TP.

Relyt Bandor, the man with the plan! Hey man love your work in Yak’s Bend doing all those events. Those WERE hella fun back when you did them. I have to agree with you that in all but a few instances teamwork is ‘passive’ in GW2. However, I think that comes with the fact that there are no real set roles for people to follow, so people don’t really have to know when player x is doing y, because chances are they can do y for themselves as well. Creating more exclusive mechanics for classes or increasing the amount that the current exclusive mechanics can be used may see an increase in ‘active’ teamwork. For instance, if Anet were to make Guardians the only class in the game that can enable other players to block, and instead of having it on only the 90-sec party-wide scale, have a much shorter CD option for single-target block. Those are the kinds of mechanics I’m talking about, things that would make each class have a specific ‘role’ that requires their actions to be coordinated. However, with how this game is set up that won’t be possible. But I can direct you to some videos that show amazing use of called out combofields in WvW that result in some pretty epic battles/victories.

Thanks :P. I still do them, mostly PvE ones like world bosses/mini dungeons. We’re having a server party today (the 15th) at 430 PM server time, you n your guild should tag along.

But I think giving classes some exclusive aspects to set them apart from other classes could make this game really interesting. The recent change to the warrior’s signet could be a sign that they’re planning on doing exactly that. Right now a lot of skills revolve around application of boons/condis and physical damage, and classes can do all of these. They should really amplify the way classes handle these things and how they can interact between allies. It is a tough cookie in terms of finding a way to do this without offering a suggestion that would imply a major rework; which i’m sure they’re trying to stay away from.

Exactly what I’m saying man, everyone can apply boons/conditions, and in fact every boon/condition can be applied by more than one class. They don’t need to get rid of their ‘holy trinity’ and thus can avoid a total rework. One thing they can do is have a profession excel at purging conditions on allies and some how turning that into an offensive force (think of this as a ‘healer’ in GW2). Then they could have a profession that deals heavy in knockdown, knockbacks, immobolize, weakness (which needs a rework itself imo), and various forms of hard CC like that. (Your ‘control/support’ in GW2). The list could go on, but instead of having every class be able to do job Y, I think job Y should exclusively be done by profession X. Imagine if you had to have one person manage control of enemy movement instead of everyone and their mother having pulls, immobolize, etc. Then people would really have to actively talk about when they are using that oh so important immobilize or knockdown.

Although if anything like this would be possible with their current game mechanics and design philosophy I don’t know. I guess time will tell, but I have much faith in ArenaNet.

Why create some complex system to "add spice" to WvW matchups? The player base has been suggesting a system for months now that I can’t seem to find a flaw in (call me bias) especially if this is the alternative.

Winner goes up (Except top tier, winner stays)
3rd Place goes down (Except bottom tier, 3rd place stays)
2nd Place stays.

Then add in RNG for which server gets which color.

Volatility is not what you need in matchups, variety is.

How about Zero RNG and Tokens and just have everything drop from specific places, oh wait that would be too easy and fun and people might actually farm items and get stuff easier, yeah we can’t have players enjoying themselves…

I miss the old days when loot just dropped and players just farmed…and if i wanted to spend money in the cash shop i could actually buy the said item and get on with it…

The good old days? Point me to a successful MMO where someone killed a mob and was guaranteed a specific drop. RNG is as old as Everquest (maybe even MUDs, never played em though). Or let’s go with your idea. Everyone would have a legendary now, and then everyone would be kittening about no unique skins. Oh generation Y how you amuse me.

Guildwars was probably the closest, Rune of Magic had very little RNG and the things dropped nicely, RF Online had very little RNG with Great drop rates.. Tera loot seems a lot less RNG based…Ace online/Air Rivals while it had high RNG later the loot rewards matched the RNG in most ways..

Some single player experiences (yes i know its not an MMO) were Diablo 1+2, Torchlight 1+2, Borderlands 1+2, Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning just off the top of my head

If Guild Wars was ‘the closest’ then your argument is even more invalid than I thought. Have you ever tried farming for the items required to get Gifts of the Traveler every week? I remember one week it took me approx. 40 hours just to get all 15 of the items. And don’t get me started on Greens. Played the game for a solid 1500+ hours and only had one green drop.

RNG I’m afriad.

This right here is beginning to kitten me off. "RNG this". "RNG that". What the hell do you guys want Anet to do? Guarantee every spark element drops a charged lodestone? Every champion is guaranteed to drop an pre-cursor? People kitten and complain about the weirdest kitten. Just because this game caters to the casuals does NOT mean every drop should be handed to you. You still have to invest time to get drops.

I’ve never heard of any other RPG get complaints about "RNG" (well besides Aion, but that’s because theirs truly was brutal). Drops HAVE to run off of RNG or the market would be flooded with so many items you all would be complaining about too much supply and no way to make money off your drops.

Arrowcarts damage should stay as is for players only, not siege.

This is a good point, actually.

Arrows are meant for hitting flesh. There’s really no reason they should have much effect on solid wood and metal, e.g. every piece of siege in existence.

It’d also make rams and golems viable again now that a single AC can massacre either. Nowadays the only purpose a ram has in taking an objective is if it’s deserted or defended by someone too dumb/unsupplied to build a slaughtercart.

You know what? I actually agree with this. Against seige, arrow carts can be weak. It does make sense. It will also at least make that pot of oil more important now to stop rams and gollems.

GW2, like its predecessor, is a game of rock : paper : scissors. Under ideal circumstances, it’s perfectly balanced. Obviously, it’s not perfectly balanced. However, with regards to arrow carts and their recent buffs, this is a restoration of balance.

It was the previous meta that was broken. Zergs (and their associated rams and golems) dominated everything; there was no rock : paper : scissors balance. Burning oil? What a joke. Any defender who even looked sideways at a burning oil pot was cluster-kittened by a kitten-load of AoE. Arrow carts? LUL. Players would stand in arrow cart AoE with as much concern as if it were a mild rainshower in Springtime.

Now, a zerg rolls up to a gate and tries to drop rams or rush with golems, the counter is arrow carts. The balance has been restored. No longer will zergs rule the meta single-handedly. Nor is it a new imbalance that makes arrow carts dominate a new meta.

Just amazes me how little players bother to think outside the box. OH NOES, MAH ZERGZ IZ BORKED!!! Adapt, learn new strategies, multi-task, think circularly rather than linearly. Can’t get your golems up to the gate or can’t drop your rams? Then build catas and/or trebs and take out the arrow carts in advance.

And, no, the nerf of Swirling Winds as a counter is not an excuse not to try. Coordinate your forces and speed build multiple trebs in several locations. The defenders can’t hit them all at the same time with a counter-treb. They can’t swirly, either, so some of your boulders will get through and destroy their arrow carts if you’re a skilled trebbist. What’s that you say? You don’t know how to use a treb because you’ve been zerging this whole time? Now’s a good time to start practicing.

Hills is your real objective? Then attack garrison with a feint while porting your golems up to the gate to ninja hills. Too many defenders on the map to do either, you say? Fine, pin them down on their borderland map while capturing something of their’s on a different map.

The rock : paper : scissors balance has been restored. Arrow carts beat golems and rams, golems and rams beat trebs and catas (if you can get them inside those siege weapons’ minimum ranges and slow charge ups), trebs and catas beat arrow carts. Of course, creative strategic and tactical thinking beats all.

If you make arrow carts weak against golems and rams or all siege in general, then we just go back to the meta we had prior to the patch. I realize many QQ-ing hard over this change would like to see that happen, but it won’t. The days of zergs spamming rams and auto-attack at gates for guaranteed wins and world experience just came to an end with yesterday’s patch. Get over it.

You my friend, are the most intelligent person I’ve seen in this thread. People can’t just mindlessly zerg now. “O w8 I have 2 bunker in n actully siege a keep noaw?”. Last time I checked 10,000 range is much greater than a 2,500 range.

Ascended gear through WvW - When?

Yeah, saw a post awhile ago with some guy saying he had all 5 of his chars with full ascended accessories and had 70+ ascended rings in the bank from running fractals. I was only able to get my second piece of ascended gear a little bit ago and since I don’t do dailys religiously it will probably take about half a year to get one char in full ascended accessories… and I don’t even want to think about when they release the rest of the ascended equipment.

That kinda makes me think – either add ascended to WvW or make them cost more laurels. I understand that Anet wants FotM to be the best way to get ascended gear, but the rate at which you get them through FotM vs. Daily grinding has so much disparity it isn’t even funny.

The issue with the downed state is that it rallies multiple players if anything they tagged gets killed.

SO!
=> NPCs don’t rally
=> 1 player killed = 1 player rallied, not many
=> once rallied from a killed player you get a 5 minute debuff that keeps you from being rallied from player kills

I say this because as is, good fights look like complete crushing victories for a side because of the snowball effect. Second, everyone tags so many and wisely so. I can recall rallying off of player kills 8 times in under a 2 minutes in a really big fight.

Stopping and rallying a downed player is part of the game but just keep kill rallies in check and many issues will go away.

I had to log in just to quote you. This is by far the BEST idea I’ve seen in regards to downed state mechanics in WvW. It doesn’t completely eliminate this “unique feature”, but it does limit it so it isn’t in it’s current OP state. (1 v 4s where the 4 keep rallying off PvE mobs ftl)

Get ready for those server mergers.. Servers with the smallest population combining of course.

No server have “low” populations. In fact almost all of them have high-full population on server select. Just because some servers have a ton more PvE players than WvW, does not mean they are dead.

I don’t think commander should be bought, voted on, or achieved to be honest. Not sure HOW it should be chosen, but I see problems with all three of those. The bought/voted on have already been discussed, but many people seem to favor the achievement based ones. I will be the first to tell you that as a commander I don’t fight NEARLY as much as the normal population does. I’m normally sitting in the back looking at the best possible tactic to use at the time. That’s not to say when it gets down to it and I’m needed I refuse to fight, I just feel like most of my time is spent watching the map/getting info from team chat and PMs.

Like I said though, I offer no better solutions, just criticism on the most often proposed ones.

Somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks ago Yak’s Bend had so many new players transfer to their server that they jumped from rank 16 to rank 11 in one match. That’s not due to gradually improving through learning and tactics.

You are completely right. We haven’t been gradually improving. Instead about 2-3 weeks ago we finally got our kitten together. A lot of great leaders have stepped forward and organization has become key. A lot of our commanders are constantly talking to eachother, giving status updates on the borderlands they are on and when help is needed. I can’t tell you how many times in the past 2 weeks I’ve gotten a pm from a commander asking me to bring some people from the borderlands I’m in to help them in different borderlands. Or how many times I’ve gotten help from different commanders on my borderlands. The commanders in YB are amazing, and I can’t begin to tell you how much communication helps in WvW.

Oh and the reason we are able to send people to help on a whim is because we have no queues, even during primetime NA. To be honest at some points it seems like YB has lost a lot of the population since release. If we have gained any big new guilds they must really love PvE.

I would like to second what Subtle said. I’ve noticed a couple of new commanders from guilds I’ve never seen before, who don’t communicate with other commanders. If you have any plans of transferring and doing something similar. Don’t.

With that in mind, all Yak’s needs is a good EU/AUS prime time player base and we will be a T3/T2 server easy. We have never had the numbers to zerg, even during NA prime time, as such we have developed strategies and perfected our response times. Why Orb Removal Will be Very Bad for WvW

In addition, think of the loss of this experience: taking the orb from the altar and running it back to your garrison, all in the meanwhile trying to defend the enemy from killing your orb carrier and resetting it/ stealing it. It’s one of my favorite moments in WvW when an orb is on the move and it just goes crazy trying to secure it. By removing the orbs of power, we will no longer have this experience available to us. I highly urge Anet to fix the altar problem and put them back in (maybe modified)

I agree Spetrix. Just tonight when you were pushing SH from the south, CD was pushing from the north, and my group was defending DB and CD got into SH first. They stole the orb right as you were running into SH. I called my group to head to N SH to head off CD, you continued to push them from south SH. We met CD at the north SH gate, and stole the orb. In that skirmish the orb had to have changed hands at least 10 times. All the while DB was getting trebbed from Garrison. So we run the orb back to DB with 20 CD on our tails. Manage to place it and we are instantly met with a zerg of CD knocking on our front door.

That was one of the most epic 20 minutes of WvW ever. Moments like that are now gone. I truly hope ArenaNet finds the “fix” to the orbs sooner rather than later. IMO though, if they would have let servers balance out (stop free transfers) and let the Tiers get equal matchups, orbs would no longer become a problem.

I just want to say, this has been by far the best matchup in WvW. That is if you don’t include Yak’s fight just a few weeks ago when it came down to the last hour to decide the winner. I hope that if CD moves on DH stays in our bracket at least. Great fighting by everyone and if CD didn’t have the coverage that they do (not bashing you for it ) there would be a 1k difference in points on all three servers.

Much respect goes out to DH and CD for that epic fight at GB. Luckily our treb had just enough range to take out CD’s treb guarding the door otherwise we would have never made it in there. That was a nice battle and what WvW is all about! I honestly didn’t know who was going to take that tower until we somehow managed to at the last second.

Don’t worry, I believe the Yak’s community is mature enough to see that true class pvpers aren’t the ones spawn camping.
As to what’s going on in the background for all of the Yaks WvWers, we’re organizing and preparing for the next matchup. It’s been a tough week but I hope we learned a lot (I certainly did, thanks TW for teaching me some solid T1 tactics)
I’m going to come out of the gate swinging again tomorrow at the server reset. This time we’re going to hold the point lead we build.
GG SoR, you guys won for a lot of reasons. I congratulate you on a strong win, strong play and best of luck in the higher tier match ups. We’ll be right behind you in a few weeks

This is the sole reason I have fallen in love with Yak’s Bend and will never leave. We have so many players that are dedicated to coming back next week fighting. SoR kicked our kitten sure, but we’ll dominate next week for sure! Can’t wait to see how we end up dominating next week
