Well done Strago. +1 for optimism and positivity. Something that’s much needed in the forums.

And I can’t believe people still have their minds completely tunnel-visioned on the manifesto.

It is the topic of this thread, what did you expect to find in here? Of course we are discussing the Manifesto in a topic called “According to the manifesto”.

People…

I merely gave my opinion on the matter. You didn’t have to indirectly insinuate an inability at my end to comprehend the thread topic.

You gentlemen are clearly articulate on this matter. Nonetheless, it simply doesn’t sit well with me when the manifesto is continually used as pretext to rile the forums. There’s nothing constructive to draw from it.

Edit: In response to below post. I will agree that the word for word verbatim at Colin’s end errs to a certain degree but is that such a deal breaker? Best statistical loot by 80 isn’t 100% true per se, no mistake about that, but are we in a state of a massive disadvantage to much of the content in the game if we don’t have ascended gear by then? I, for one, didn’t exactly feel that way. So, to penalise the game so heavily in that sense just hurts.

Wait, what? Why would they release a manifesto for public consumption that is not crystal clear and requires “interpretation?”

What was stated was the selling point for the entire game for me.

According to some people here, it was easy to understand everything that was being talked about in the Manifesto. And also according to them, everyone followed GW2 like a piranha prior to release and knew everything and everything about the game.

Amusing right?

Oh it sure is. People need to realize that a lot of people that bought the game were new to the Guild Wars franchise. I sure was. I only learned about in August 2012 through another MMO forum, saw the manifesto and thought to myself: “Cool. This seems like a game I would really enjoy!”

I took a break last November due to IRL issues, came back around around 6 weeks ago, and I feel like I’m a sucker who fell for a bait-and-switch.

And which part of the game exactly that made you feel this way? I really cannot see anything that would make me feel like I’m a sucker for playing GW2. I have gripes, but none that would have me declare such deep disdain for it with the pretext that is the manifesto. Grind you say? There’s grind in almost every RPG out there. And this one has by far the least feel of grind.

I do know that people will retort by saying “do you even have any idea how much mats would be required to craft ascended/legs, etc?”. And I will say this, you don’t need those gear to do PvE, dungeons, WvW.. You can participate in them with an adequate understanding of your class/build with a mix of rares and masterworks. It feels grindy because you’re always in a state of utter desire for the best stuff the game has to offer.

Sure, no doubt there is a slight edge in ascended equipment, but that there is end game content man. If all you’re focused about is gear, you’re missing out on the real meat of this game, and that is the helpful and very obliging game community.

No, I work through a list that is given to me as a QA in the first step.

I check the list, then I check the product. I see the facts. I evaluate them.

Best gear easy to get for a casual (5h playtime a week). No.
Do content relevant bosses respawn in short time frames. Yes.
“Grinding is no fun, so we do not want people to grind.” statement. False

I don’t care about testing, or editing, I check he hard facts. And in this matter, ANet has failed his own Manifesto.

The way I see it, my first toon hits level 80, has a good mix of rares and masterwork gear. Levelling was NOT a grind. Now at 80, what content exactly am I shunned from? Can’t think of any except for high level fractals. So, how is it a big grind? Sounds like you’re simply obsessed over acquiring “BiS” gear. The game to me, was certainly not a big grind.

And I can’t believe people still have their minds completely tunnel-visioned on the manifesto.

Hope you see this...thank you Anet

It’s refreshing and I feel like we can still help make a difference in helping the GW2 community grow positively, and at the same time, help to steer the game in the right direction by providing constructive feedback and as in this case, the occassional but very sincere appreciation for all the hard work the developers have put in to give us this highly remarkable game.

Thanks again for all the answers. At the moment i think i have 2 more enjoyable moments to add to collection :

1) While running to another map section an event started in which i saw about 30-40 other players gathering around a place i just did a couple of quests, just out of nowhere there appeared this massive Champion of Sons of Svanir who started making portals, and summoning hurricanes and ice storms, and all of this while these 30 to 40 other players were smashing him. Lighting and gunpowder was in the air and it felt so godkitten epic. I don’t know the cause, be it teethgrinding epic gameplay or the northern setup, but for the first time in mmo the action felt like it was really meaningfull and wasn’t meant mainly only for the loot. And the fact that it wasn’t some high level dungeon, but an action event in an open field.Wow.Just..wow.

2) Maybe not as epic but still really made my evening. While questing, me & a friend of mine came to a fort that was being attacked by sons of svanir from time to time. Having played other mmo like games a little, i didn’t feel threatened by any of that story fluff, because the mechanics of mmo’s stated that character hubs are not accessible to mobs, not even speaking about the possibility of a whole wipeout. So we went on questing, and eventually came by an event in which we had to escort trading caravan back to the fort i was talking about. Considering all said above, imagine my surprise when we came by the fort and the caravaner told me that he won’t go there because it’s occupied by sons of svanir and that someone should put a stop to this. So we went there and rescued the brave lionheart fellows from the tyranny of these fanatics. It was absolutely fan-tas-tic.

All and all i’m finding this game more & more amazing ^^

And that my friend, is the power of role-playing, of which many of the naysayers simply know not of how to savour. There’s plenty more where that came from and lots others to do as well. Really glad to hear you’re already having a ball of a time

Just bought GW2.

I’m too jaded to even retort with the same few people that insist on ruining the game image to newcomers; I don’t know what they intend to achieve after all. It’s as if they’re actually trying to chase new players away. So bitter..

This is such garbage it’s awesome. “Say something with confidence and people will eat it up; no matter how stupid”.

The advice is … always assume the bad things people say are right and the good things they say are wrong? You’d have alotta empty art museums – and some really tiny book stores – if that’s the way it worked.

What ya do is listen to everyone’s opinions – ignore the people what can’t offer anything without being abusive, because their opinions are almost never constructive and when they are you can bet someone else is saying it better – and take a long hard look at your art with alla that in mind.

“More people are sayin’ this is good than are saying it’s bad.”
“More people are sayin’ this is bad than are saying it’s good.”

Now let’s see what we can do about that.

Anet’s problem ain’t that they never listen; it’s that every time they have listened and changed stuff it’s caused more anger than not.

“We want some kind of grind!” Enter endless dungeon – people scream that it’s an endless grind.

“We want another tear ah weapons!” Enter new tear of weapons – people scream the sky is falling and Anet has burned the manifesto.

The only way Anet is gonna do anything right is by taking all that criticism, and alla that praise, and weighing it out – seeing what is working best and what isn’t. Ain’t no way they’ll make everyone happy no how – so they gotta try to make the most people happy with each new thing. Listening only to the complaints isn’t gonna make that happen.

I echo this sentiment completely. No way they can appease everyone, they can only improvise gradually as best as they can without breaking the entire game and trying to keep the general gaming populace happy or relatively content.

The forums are often times a horrible place to come to. I’m not a part of the dev team and I can feel the serious burn that comes from the many cynics that come and post their core hatred for the company, for even the most trivial of reasons. Imagine what it’s like if you’re a part of that team.

And don’t use the pretext of “But I’ve paid my $60, so I’m an entitled customer” because chances are, you’ve played this game, enjoyed every bit of the very best a modern MMORPG has to offer and then some. I appreciate the fact that there’s plenty of forum feedback which shows that the player base truly does care about where GW2 will be headed to, but at the same time, there’s so much unnecessary and incessant whining too.

A gaming company of this age, and capable of producing games of AAA grade in one of the most challenging genres (MMO’s) in gaming, would you not think they’d consistently evaluate feedback, criticism and opinions from the very players that drive their game forward? What’s more, they would have to, at the same time, assess* what is relevant, what is not; what could drive it forward and what could ruin it; what could please the community and what would have them suddenly take up arms in anger and also allocate manpower and resources to expand the game with LS, hot-fixes and constant maintenance to keep the game performing at it’s optimal level.

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment, know that it is anything but easy. Realize that what we’ve been given, is a splendid game that ranks among the very best in MMO gaming today. And I am thankful for that. Met lots of really nice people and having a great time everytime I log in.

Don’t slack off though ANet! We’re still looking forward to more from you guys.

Edit: Without the asterisk, there’s a censor for the word assess*

Hi All,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but i have been taking the time to read through the thread.

I wanted to say thanks for both some great feedback (community members posting what they like and don’t like) and that it has been useful to see some health debate regarding our interaction with you all.

I wanted to clear a few things up first:

Copy Paste Conspiracy!!!
A few weeks ago i posted on a thread regarding how we use forums to collaborate in terms of development. That thread was then deleted before i had time to post the second part of the content. My intention was to then add the whole post to the general discussion forum. I therefore decided to add to the the original post i had written and put it on the general discussion page. Sorry if i offended anyone. The time delay was caused by me being out of the office last week.

We don’t listen to negative feedback.
I just wanted to clarify this is not the case at all. Constructive feedback can be both positive or negative feedback. Un-constructive feedback in my opinion is when the post is muddied by overly emotional context such as being rude, disrespectful or making wild assumptions. Therefore please understand that negative criticism about the game is something we value and is core to collaborative development.

Chris Whiteside has a team of writers/PR people and Marketeers talking through him!
This is not the case. i just happen to write this way. Everything i say comes from the heart and if it helps i can write in a less passionate manner. Note i am English and this may have some effect on the way i write (People in the studio tend to blame a lot of the mistakes i make on being English so you are all in good company there)

So back to the matter at hand. Through reading the posts i think it would be really useful for me to start a thread like ‘name one thing you would like to see improved in Guild Wars 2’ and then start riffing with you all on these subjects matters and try to make a more meaningful connection with you all that way by which we can define a process together for Collaborative Development?

I am also going to ask that we build out more time for team members to post and i will follow up with you all on that.

What do you think, does this sound like a good way to move forward?

Chris

Yes, that would certainly be nice. I do, however, foresee innumerable complaints that will come your way and may at one or some point become quite… overwhelming.

Tigirius has a good thread that’s linked and perhaps a reply to those kinds of threads would be a better start. Please keep up the good work Mr. Whiteside.

A fellow dev posts to keep players of GW 2 engaged and to re-assure that they are consistently working to improve gameplay, and the first few replies itself reflects pessimism, skepticism and extreme cynicism. The least you guys could do in a topic of goodwill like this is to PROMOTE goodwill. There will be heaps of other threads where you can address things you’re unhappy about, just not here.

To Mr. Whiteside,

Thank you kindly for letting us know that ANet and its team continue to work tirelessly to bring us more enjoyable content and to attempt to mould Tyria into a more fleshed out, living, breathing world. We, as players that truly enjoy the world, lore and it’s community, continue to look forward to more that your team will come up with in the near future. We, too, on our part will provide feedback where possible to help your team realize that ambition.

My opinion on GW2. It has the foundation to be a solid 10. An amazing game. But to me right now with temp content, and 2-week minigames with bugs, gear grinding, dailies, farming, no incentive to PvP, bad ranking in WvW etc.

The devs are taking a piece of art and banging it on the wall repeatedly. It is so painful to watch. But I do have hope. I like what they did with Tequatl and I like the most recent perm dungeon patch.

I hope they keep up with this perma content and get rid of the temp mini-games. Then the game can become what it should.

Effort to consistently keep things dynamic and non-linear gets flak. Adding a mere extra tier of gear that grants a very slight advantage. Flak. Comparing it with WoW or other MMOs. More flak. Adding cosmetics that’s listed on gem store. Called greedy and non-player focused and more money focused. The endless list goes on.

Good God, what will it take the appease the masses? If they made it permanent content for every living story, someone’s gonna complain that they wanna see changes in the World of Tyria from a certain time frame. If they extend the LS content, someone’s gonna complain about how it’s too long and that people would complete all the achievements in under 2 weeks and that logging in daily is but a boring grind for dailies/monthlies etc.

And relating to some earlier comments about only pressing 1 and winning, you must be kidding me. I seem to use all keys for combat, from combat skills to all the utility and elite skills. I also main a ranger so I have to micro manage my pet(s) too. If you’re bored with Zerg fests, how about some of you come guest on low pop servers like DR for a change and use that opportunity to engage in more exciting combat where trains are not as large, if any at all.

There’s always a viable solution out there in the game if you’re not happy about something. Just take a step back and meditate on what you’re looking for. If you simply can’t think of any, I’d say you burned through all the main content, have spent no less than 800 hours in total and are highly loot driven. Best thing to do at this point is take a break from the game for a month or so, play other MMOs or other games and when you feel that pull to come back, I’m fairly certain you’ll appreciate a lot better all the finer points this game has to offer.

Tl;dr – I disagree that this game is inferior to any other MMOs out there, nor is it something that one can simply declare that trumps other games of its genre. Stop using metas to justify your points. Just play the game and interact with other players while you’re at it.

Your “valid” criticism is what again?

No I said stop adding additional tiers to the game like you promised. Colin said he misjudged the community which is why they added ascended. He admitted it was a mistake on ANet’s part. They never “planned” to have ascended in the game. So they went back on their word and their original plan.

Now all I hope for is that they don’t add more tiers. As Colin promised again.

Another ascended gear complaint. I don’t know what is up with players and their obsession over ascended. I play the game as it is and there is HEAPS of content to enjoy. Take a step back, travel to areas that’re not frequented, do some events and pay attention to all the small details Anet has incorporated in them, from pre-event gestures to post-event banter by the NPC’s. That is only one element and I’m enjoying every bit of it.

I’m probably enjoying myself a lot more because I don’t consider what the general community deems as BiS gear as the only/ultimate reward. My reward comes from immersing myself in the game, meeting new people and just having a good time with guildies and other players (WvW and PvP included).

And I’m geared with rares and exotics and I still can’t see what the big fuss is all about in ascended gear incorporation. I’d say it’s more to work on and look forward to. Enjoy the game man, don’t stress yourself out.

I do agree that they should ease up with content. Maybe once a month would be a more plausible choice? Gives players ample time to savour the content and gives the devs more time to work on the next content update too.

Which server “were” you playing in? I play in Devona’s Rest and even then, I wouldn’t call it a ghost server. Even so, I still bump into the occasional group/players while I explore In other maps.

I come here when I’m away on work trips and can tell you that the many that constantly complain are few of the same players and most of it don’t constitute towards constructive feedback. It’s just constant expression of hate and disdain for no apparent reason.

I’ve learned to simply not pay attention to any of them. There are only few posters that I respect in the forums and I only read their posts (which are for the most part constructive critiscm with a reasonable amount of tact and courtesy)

Need advice... Worth starting gw2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ToPocHi.2480

I can only speak for PvE here, I don’t PvP in either of the forms this game has.

First of all, you have to be willing to consider GW2 entirely on its own merits. If you compare it to any other games, including WoW or GW, you risk overlooking some of what makes GW2 what it is.

Second, if you really want to get to max level and best gear ASAP, then this game will disappoint. Yes, it’s easy to get to max level. Max gear? Hard, and getting harder sometime soon. But if you DO get the best gear… there’s nothing else for you to chase. You can do the living story updates, but they won’t actually advance you any. You’ll feel like a marathon runner that slammed straight into an invisible brick wall at the 1 mile mark.

Third, if you must complete every goal and get every shiny, run away. Quickly. New “Living Story” stuff is added every two weeks, and sooner or later you WILL miss something. Hell, you’ve already missed a lot of it.

Fourth, this game has RP in it, which is good. But the game itself isn’t really very RP friendly, which is profoundly disappointing. There are RPers and we do our best, but GW2 really isn’t the best place for RP. (Note: I’ve come from some VERY RP friendly games, so I may have different expectations than most players.)

But for fifth, there’s the positive side. While going at this game as a marathon run is bad, going at it as a casual stroll is great. You have to be just that, though. Casual. Wander around, see what’s going on. Talk to NPCs with names, and enjoy the sights. Take your time, ignore what you don’t want to deal with, and never stress out. If you can enter that mindset, the game is fun. There’s no rush to level 80, the content doesn’t really change for the high end, anyway. There’s a big game world to explore, and some fun to be had if you go out and find it.

So… yeah. If you stress, obsess, or strive to excel, you might want to stay away. If you want to play to just relax and have some fun wandering around a pretty game world and smacking grawl, then load it up and give it another shot.

I echo what Palador said exactly. Oh, and try looking for a guild to join too. The community for the most part in GW 2 is amicable and always willing to help. Save for the forums.

There is always new and fresh content. Some may not have appealed to me but the world is never exactly the same as it was before from launch days.

And I’ve got great friends and guild mates that I’ve met during my adventures in GW 2. Maybe that’s why I’ve never felt like this game was ever a chore. Because I play with moderation and a reasonable perception where I’d appreciate the effort put in with all the finer details.

Sure could do with a couple of bug fixes though.

That was the last hint I needed for that achievement. When I realized what I missed, I took off all of my armor except for my back piece and ran around Orr. Didn’t take long and only had to repair the back piece.

Edit: There’s another achievement beyond the hints for breaking all of your gear? What the deuce?

Edit v2: I’m not losing my mind. It’s only the hint. Meow is dead on. You only need to break 1 piece of armor. Can’t remember if I received that hint when I rezzed or when I repaired. I’ve only let that 1 piece break on me. I’m too OCD to let armor stay damaged for long.

So, the initial design where you could do just wvw, dungeons or open world to get exotics were thrown out of a window. Makes sense. Living world has nothing to do with players but with constant dynamic changes.

There are people doing just open world and they can progress, there are people doing just dungeons and fractals and they could have progress, there are people doing just wvw and they could have progress. I see a contradiction here which is mostly due to incompetence and short-sighted vision of our dear developers who apparently want to turn pve to a place where you press 1 and win. I hope you enjoy that, I, on the other hand, don’t want to get a brain cancer.

There are parts of the PvE world where you can pretty much just press 1 and win, but that would mean your level in that particular zone usually isn’t in tandem with the zone level. I just went through Orr with my level 80 main and there are many instances where I don’t just press 1 and win there. In fact, in one of the South Pact base defense, me and 3 other players were pretty much utilizing all our skill sets to repel the Risen attackers. And it was fun because we knew that we were doing our part in case the last leg on the Balthazar Temple run fails, we had a point midway to continue from.

If you’re gonna just champ farm in Queensdale/Frostgorge with a zerg in PvE, of course you’re self-imposing conditions where the game becomes substantially easier through gasp camaraderie.

There’s always adequately challenging content in the game. It’s dependent on the players if they wanna do it or not, is all.

Good luck to you guys who seem so utterly dissatisfied with the game all the time. If something makes you unhappy constantly, logic would have it that you move on to something else. Bar the recent lag/disconnect issues and certain bugs in-game, this game is a gem.

I’ve been away again for work and during my trip, all I could do is read the forums to follow up with updates, player response and the likes. And it’s all hate for this game here. What gives?! What did ANet do exactly to us that we’d bash them endlessly like they’ve committed atrocious, heinous crimes that deserve death on the stake? Thank God the “Holy Grind Wars” thread was locked. It was beyond toxic there..

I always look forward to coming home to play the game, just relaxing and enjoying myself. Pertaining to the topic itself, the game caters a lot to a casual like me. When I have spare time for leisure, I turn the game up and pick up where I left off. My AP stands at 2.1k and that should speak a lot for the level of “casual” here. And with so much that ANet is introducing, I don’t feel one bit intimidated, contrary to the uproar by the masses regarding ascended gear (the grind?), falling behind in AP, introduction of hard content which requires coordination and thus the end of casual content for everyone? Uhh, what? Seems like people complain about anything these days.

Here’s how I see it, this game is remarkable in just about every aspect I can think of. I miss out on an enormous amount of dailies (and with that AP’s) due to the nature of my work. Do I feel like I’m falling behind? No, and why should I? There’s ascended gear and legendaries that apparently take forever to acquire and you can only procure them by means of crafting. Do I feel like I’m hitting a wall here? Jeez, no. I do just fine with a mix of rares and exotics. I do get killed quite a bit (probably due to a lack of skill as of yet >.<) in WvW and PvP but that’s a part of the game and I enjoy the interaction there and sportsmanship (where it is exhibited). Can’t kill Teq? Makes it a reason to go out there, talk to players, try to organize something and try taking that Taco down as a community. I’ve yet to take him down, but the interaction with people and esprit de corp is reward enough as it stands. Plus the fights are entertaining despite the lack of successes thus far.

I love this game and I will repeat myself as many times to ascertain to people that not everyone are whiners/haters/trolls in the forums. I have certain gripes anout the game myself but it doesn’t warrant the kinds of hate that many in the forums seem to so brazenly express at every given possible whim. And I can clearly identify few of which have clearly aligned themselves that way.

Tl:dr – Game’s great, I’m a casual and don’t see how the game’s straying from that. There’s content for everyone to enjoy and it’s up to each player to see that themselves. And stop hating on the game already. That is why we cannot have nice things.

It’s always great to read such light-hearted posts, especially when it pertains to the innocence of growth and learning. I agree that games foster thinking and analysis, all the while exercising and improving hand-eye coordination.

Like the above posters have pointed out though, it is also vital to teach mannerisms and proper decorum to your children, especially when they’re at a younger age. You do look like you’ll do a great job though! Keep playing together, growing together and having fun together. That’s what being a parent to a child is all about after all. Enjoy the journey Euphemia!

“Turns out I pushed too hard to get those new mechanics in there and I’m being told here over and over that all that work was wasted and it’s making people miserable. I’ve learned my lesson. Won’t happen again! And for that, my family thanks you!”

“Hm. Let me specify, lest I be accused of whining. I meant all the EXTRA hours I poured in was wasted. I just put in too much stuff. I’m not crying here. I’m learning a lesson.”

This is absolutely awful! I feel terribly for him. No one should be made to feel this way when they pour their heart and soul into something. And people wonder why we’ve stopped getting feedback of any kind on here. The forum community is simply toxic! Honestly, I wouldn’t blame anet if they simply pulled the plug on the game and told us all to gfy.

I feel so bad for him. I hope he knows that there are also a lot of players who’s played the content and genuinely enjoyed it. I’ve yet to fully complete SAB myself, but from the few clips I checked on youtube on how players run through the content, it sure looks like a lot of fun. I just wanna express my appreciation to Foreman and his team and will continue to show my unending support for all effort that’s put in this game; especially so since it’s clearly with passion, ardour and fervour.

*Edit: Just had a taste of SAB and boy was it fun. Granted it was tough as nails, but it makes for some very refreshing change of pace. I even took several screenshots of the level designs because I found them to be really interesting and well done. I’ll try beating the later levels again and am looking forward to it. I’ll read up on the lore behind SAB for now.

And the other 35% of people are those who enjoy the game and are toiling away here while at work (me).

Yeah, that’s the only reason I’m here; because I’m at work too xD. Once I get home, I’m gonna be playing the game and not reading doom and gloom material. :/

*Edit: Think I’ll stop responding. Involvement in these threads won’t substantiate any change. It’s like literally going up against the entire forum base since everyone somehow hates this game.

People seem to see through smoke color glasses, glass half empty with poison inside. I’m itching to get home to play it at the end of my work’s trip and all I see in the forums during my trip are people who spits at the game and wants others to see it that way too. Appalling to say the least.

*Edit: Note to OP
@OP: Nice work on the video by the way.

Negativity?

It’s so true that these forums are toxic. Only reason I’m here in the forums is because I’m away from home due work and I don’t have a performance laptop capable of playing the game. I’m already missing the game and my guildies and can’t wait to get back home to play!

But for the past 5 days, all I’ve read are disheartening whines from others in the forum, be it the game difficulty (claims that game is TOO easy..? Last I checked, my death records was about.. 680 deaths? I must really blow in this game :/), lore, game aesthetics, micro-transactions i.e. gemstore, LS direction, etc.

I’ll say this for sure. I can’t wait to get home to play GW2!
