Anyone Else Feels Tired Of Living Story?

I dislike the idea a lot. I stopped playing just after Southsun content came out, mainly because of the huge mess that was.

I’ve tried to come back to the game a number of times since then and find something enjoyable to do only to find that I don’t have enough time to take part in the current living story.
Either that or I do the living content that’s out, get bored while waiting for more and simply go off and play something else and don’t come back finish it.

There have been quite a few items that i would have like to get from these living story events, sadly I wont ever get them now and that gives me less of an incentive to play.

I wanted to give the Devs some feeback on this jumping puzzle as I’ve just spent the last 6 hours trying to complete it. I was unsuccessful unfortunately and the problem seemed to be that the griffins would hit either me before I landed on the platform i was jumping to or hit me mid jump.

I hope Arena Net wasn’t so stupid as to have it only available to do for a short time because that would be unbelievably moronic of them.

Question: How do you propose to change med-kit? The loss of the toolbelt skill would vastly hinder its self-healing capacity.

Off the top of my head I’d probably add the heal to the Drop Stimulant skill and change the description to something like “Use a stimulant to heal yourself and drop a stimulant that grants fury and swiftness”.
They both have the same CD so I don’t see why they cant be combined.

The problem with the Kits we have currently, or even all the skills we have is that they have relation to each other and therefore difficult to balance.

It is hard to determine what you mean by that. Care to elaborate?

Sorry I missed a ‘no’ in there. What I meant was they seem to me to be random ideas that the devs thought would make a good skill for an engineer. A lot of them don’t really have en enginery feel to them nor do they have seem to have a central idea about what the skill is aiming to achieve in a build.

This is almost certainly why we didn’t get runes on kits or equipped weapon damage until recently and even now people are in an uproar about how the grenade kits is way overpowered.

Really? Most people are in an uproar that what they felt was our only shot at burst damage equivalent to other professions burst, got nerfed.

Exactly, you hit the nail on the head. As it seems trying to balance weapon damage and runes on top of our current kits is no simple business and by adding that damage in they felt they needed to remove it from somewhere else.
Clearly they need to sit down and look at the engineer as a whole rather than trying to patch on parts other classes have to try and make up the difference.

I think its a bad idea. As you mentioned elementalist swapping attunements as a reference, well we already got the option or choice of that with kits.

Tool kits do not use anything I consider ammo, just saying.

Don’t forget elementalists get both attunements and Kits, they 2 very different concepts. In fact most classes get a skill kit of some type as well as the option of weapon swapping which i consider to also be a kit.

The problem with the Kits we have currently, or even all the skills we have is that they have no relation to each other and therefore difficult to balance.
This is almost certainly why we didn’t get runes on kits or equipped weapon damage until recently and even now people are in an uproar about how the grenade kits is way overpowered.

The engineer as it is currently in my opinion seems to have way to many different skills without any real focus bringing them all together. Many of these skills and kits people never ever use, the Elixir Gun instantly springs to mind, how many times have you seen people running about with that on?

Engineer Rework Suggestion - Ammo Mod

I’ve been playing GW2 since launch and loved the idea of being versatile enough to make my character great for a particular type of combat. So it saddened me to realize upon reaching 80 my class and play style (pistol, turret engineer) was far below my peer classes in terms of both damage and adaptability. So my rather large idea to fix this is as follows:

Ammo Modification Mechanic

Seeing as all the weapons we have available to us are projectile weapons they all have one thing in common, ammo.

The concept would work in a similar way to the elementalist in terms of their switching between attunements and would replace the toolbelt. Rather than have a mishmash of somewhat random skills based on what utilities we want we could instead have ammo variants.

One example might be that we could load an ammo that bleeds the target(piercing ammo) to an ammo that for example slows it(chilling ammo). I realize the effects mentioned we already have on some skills but they are just quick examples.
Having a mechanic like this I think would fit the engineer class down to the ground and make the engineer truly versatile in terms of choosing what weapon you want to use be it a harpoon gun, pistol, rifle or even a kit.

Our kits are after all use ammo of a certain type too, you could apply the same concept to the flamethrower for example and switch it between a Napalm mix which would burn and a liquid nitrogen mix which could chill. This ammo idea could also be applied to our turrets giving them the same ammo effects when they fire as the player is shooting.

Although it would be a somewhat large makeover I really think this would pull all aspects of the engineer together around one solid concept, what you load into your weapon is what counts.

What do you guys think?

There is nothing wrong with vertical progression, i played a lot of games with vertical progression in the past, but the problem is when you add vertical progression in a game that was advertised without it (or is better to say, without a mandatory gear grind).

If someone tell you that a new drink is the thing you will love if you hate coke, and then the new drink taste EXACLTY like a coke, someone will surely love it, but the original buyers the ones that thrust on the advertise, have all the rights to be concerned.

While this is true and I cant dissagee with your point, not a single person has complained about lvling from 1-80? Why not? no one brought this up in beta and its exactly what vertical progression is, if you wanted to complain then was the time to do it.

There is not even a response to that, I would suggest you go read the many, MANY threads and comments on the subject as you seem to have no grasp of what the issue is and I am not going to waste my time trying to explain what has been explained before.

I didn’t play GW1 for very long due to the fact that I joined late after it released and could never find a group to do anything with, however saying that there is no way I would waste my time getting an armor skin that i didn’t want just because its there.

As for your other response I haven’t seen any threads regarding vertical progression pre release, and if there are any I have to ask if you knew there was a lvl grind why did you buy the game. Could you point me towards any of these threads ShiningSquirrel because I cant seem to see any.

As you seem unable or unwilling to share your opinion on the matter though I’m afraid I’ll have to dismiss your comment.

Easy to dismiss a comment when you have no defense? There are no beta level griend threads are there are no beta threads, an there is and has never been any issues with “level grind”, this is something you have created on your own. No one is discussing it as it does not exist. The problem people have is with gear level grind, a completly different subject and norhing to do with player levels. There are hundreds of posts going over this, if you can not find them, there is a search function in this forum in the upper right hand corner of the page. And as you have said yourself, since you did not play GW1 for any length of time, you are not familier with the game and your opinion does not really rcarry any weight in this discussion, sorry, but turn about is fair play. And just because you would not work towards a skin you did not like, does not mean the other millions of players did not as well. History has proved you wrong.

But since you seem unable to to read the forums and understand what the issues are, here they are in a nut shell.

We where told there would be a level cap and a gear cap. You reach level 80. You get exotic gear, you are done leveling both player and gear. Legendary gear was the same stats as exotic, the only differance was the skin. This is what was told to us and this is why many of us purchased this game. This was the core of Guild Wars. To get max gear, you now must grind a VERY long time or spend a large amount of real world money. This is the game that was advertised. If that is not what you wanted, why did you purchase it? Those of us complaining are complaining because this is NOT what we purchased. If you purchased an RPG game, that was advertised as and RPG, but got a FPS instead, would you not complain and make your voice heard?

Defense? Against what? Am I supposed to be fighting something?
I never said I found Leveling a grind, as I did not. What I did say however that it is vertical progression. As for how much ‘weight’ my opinion carry’s I paid the same as everyone else did so I expect my opinion to matter just as much as everyone else, regardless of what you and your elitist attitude thinks.

I also think you need to understand also this isn’t the original Guild Wars game either, it was never Anets intention to recreate a clone of the first game. I purchased GW2 because it was different to GW1 and I have no issue with them adding more gear into the game at all.

I do however have issues with the gear being a requirement, things like the agony resist slot seems daft.

Just so that you know I am able to read the thread on the forums and I can clearly see a lot of people complaining about Anet adding new things to the game, what I don’t see however are many people suggesting things they would like to see in its stead.

Is it a grind if you enjoy doing it though? If fractals were an awesome experience and players loved doing them would people still be so against the items you received for doing them?

I said it above; FotM is horizontal progression. The ascended gear tacked onto it is vertical progression. The response I’ve seen regarding FotM alone is generally positive, outside of the issue with disconnects.

What I’m trying to say is its not what you get for doing them that matters, it should be the choice of what you do and if you enjoy doing it.

How about we flip it and ask, why did they feel a need to give FotM higher tier loot?

What about exotics was insufficient to carry FotM? I have yet to see any sort of explanation as to why exotics were insufficient. I’d really love to read one, but I don’t think it exists.

But Fractrals aren’t horizontal progression, they require you to have finished the previous tier before moving on to the next. As I understand it you are then required to get agony items for resistance so you can go further.

How is this any different to simply getting better gear and fighting harder monsters?
If this is what you meant i completely agree with you, i don’t understand why they did it either.

No, leveling up is not the vertical progression we are talking about. It ends. Gear treadmills don’t, once you reach max stats they simply add higher ones. It doesn’t take much, while the almighty progression requires you to spend 20hours for a +1 on your HP pool. It’s also a diverse experience ( you can do open-world PVE, story mode dungeons,WvW, even craft ) and doesn’t require you to farm or repeat any content.

So really what you guys are after are things more like dynamic events and such to take part in, ala Rift style?

In this sense there is no point adding any more items to the game and Anet should simply focus on what people enjoy doing most.

We had both before the the Lost Shores update. To kit out your character in WvW with full exotics and runes costs something like 40G which is fair enough. You can get by with full rares while you work towards it doing a variety of activities that don’t feel like grinding.

Now Anet brings in ascended rings which requires much more repetitive grinding just to get one. Taking into account that we now know Anet will raise the level cap and introduce full ascended equipment in the future updates and we have a grind-fest that’s up there with the worst MMO’s.

There is no good reason for ascended items to exist. Are there players out there who were not satisfied with everything GW2 had to offer, but are now actively playing because they can out-grind other players for what will eventually be a sizable advantage in WvW? Maybe, I don’t know. But those players need psychological counselling and should not be catered to.

Is it a grind if you enjoy doing it though? If fractals were an awesome experience and players loved doing them would people still be so against the items you received for doing them?

For example fractals give better gear than exotics, so what? If you don’t like doing fractals why would missing out on the gear affect you?

Simply said, if you don’t enjoy doing something, don’t complain that you have to do it, complain that its rubbish and not enjoyable.

What is it you want Anet to add in terms of content? Is it things like the Southsun Cove? The place no one goes because there is nothing to do there that you cant do anywhere else?

Is this what people are really after?

What people are after is content that stands on its own merits and rewards players for skill and co-ordination, as opposed to content that adds arbitrarily higher numbers to your screen in recognition of your repetitive 100 hour grind.

Why cant we have both though? I very often do dungeons with players who have recently reached 80 and are still in rare or below gear. A lot of them do fine if they know the dungeon and how the fights work.

‘Gear does not a good player make.’

I never found getting my exotic gear hard or a grind though personally. I enjoyed doing the events and participating especially as while doing them I knew that every one I did earned me karma towards my next piece.

There is a balance I think, that balance comes between the player enjoying what they are doing, feeling like what they are doing will ultimately improve on their character and feeling left behind and rushing to grind out enough cash/karma/whatever to catch up and play with everyone else.

Am very opposed to the whole you must have ‘x resist’ to do something though i must say and the fractal leveling restriction so I completely agree with people there.

I can’t speak for all of us, I mostly do PVE – so the WvWvW and sPVP folks might have other points. But I suspect most of what we mean by “horizontal progression” as far as PVE goes was captured in the original Guild Wars. Here’s some suggestions for GW2:

  • New content releases (without raising the level cap),
  • New races and classes to play (after maybe 2 years or so at least),
  • New areas of the existing map to open up, with reknown hearts and dynamic events,
  • More storyline to explore,
  • New aesthetically spectacular gear (with the same stats so my old gear isn’t nerfed),
  • More dynamic events, and event chains,
  • New dungeons with equivalent rewards so that old dungeons aren’t abandoned,
  • More town-clothes options,
  • Mini-games,
  • Dynamic events in the cities and towns (social missions that any character of any level could complete),
  • Special events.

For PVP, I suspect games besides conquest (e.g. capture the flag, escort missions, attack / defend, every-man-for-himself, etc) would be appreciated.

Thing is, this stuff takes work, and we acknowledge that. But I have paid (and I am sure the “horizontal progression” advocates would continue to pay) real, hard currency to finance the development of quality content like this.

Conversely coding a stat-inflated ring or back-slot with no visible skin takes almost no effort whatsoever. I won’t pay for that.

I agree with all this but, and this is a big but, some of the stuff you mentioned currently has serious issues:

There are literally hundreds of events in the game but people only seem to do the most profitable ones. In low lvl zones this is particularly bad as no one is ever there to do them? The events themselves very often unfortunately break down too leading to whole chains being stuck for hours or even days at a time.

Dungeons are great, but getting a group for them has become harder and harder and harder. Sometimes I stand in LA for a good hour trying to get a group for CoE without sucess. People are only likly going to do these new dungeons if the armor/weapon skin is something they want to use.

As for new areas, like I said we have the whole of Southsun Cove and its events, but again no one ever goes there because once they’ve done it there is no reason to go back and do it again.

Keeping things fresh and having something for players to look forward to is they key but unless they release something new every day I feel that horizontal progression will get old very quickly.
One example of this is Legendary weapons, these are even slightly better stat wise than exotics yet very few people are truly after one. I think this is mainly because the skins and effects on them are too poor in comparison to the effort required to make them.

This game does have vertical progressions and they do fail. Look at the low-mid level map.

Every game with a level scale have a component of vertical progression, the real difference is what devs create when you hit the max level.

The wow like game have new tiers with a totally different level, on the old wrath of the lich king a level 80 char had item with level from 200 to 284 (i stopped to play on wotlk, so i dont know the items level for cata and pandaland)

The GW model is totally different, because after reaching the max level, you dont change stats, but only skins rarity.

The idea of rewarding progression with a new skin is great in my opinion however there is one problem with it, people are only likely to do these new things if the skin is something they like or want.

Giving players a reward with a stat + on it, regardless of how small that bonus means people have more of an incentive to go and get it.

The potential bad part of vertical progression isn’t the progression part, but rather that “gating” is often associated with it, where a player may be effectively locked out of game content if they haven’t vertically-progressed enough.

I have stopped played WoW many times, for periods of 3 months to a year, and I always can find a group using their Looking for Dungeon Tools. In MMOs is impossible to stay locked out of the progression, because there will be always people at your level, or behind your level, or way ahead of you.

The idea of the entire server population progressing at the same time and leaving people behind is just that, and idea. In reality it doesnt work that way. I have never in all my life playing MMOs being unable to progress because “everyone else is already ahead of me”.

Ahhh I see, you mean like say the fractals system that is now already part of the game.

You could apply this theory though to any game at all, if you don’t want vertical progression Anet might as well have had a lvl cap of 1 with all class skills applied, access to all armors without a cost and had a single Pve zone.

I’m pretty sure though had they done this, GW2 would have turned into a crap game where people got bored after a couple of hours playing because there was nothing on the horizon to aim for.

Another draw back to vertical progression is older sections of a game often become obsolete which leads to a growing amount of unused content.

Really?? You mean like the 90% empty -80 zones in the game that we currently have. No one moaned about the 1-80 lvl grind in the game as I can see and no one foresaw that this would lead to an empty world.

I think you have to face facts here, GW2 already has vertical progression, it had it when you created a character and logged in.
For those of you that have played, Rift and GW2 have very similar designs however Rift made sure that there was a lot to do in all there zones and they did this without scaling the player lvl. Anet should take a leaf out of their book I think.

I have no idea, and I’d like to understand why there was a Copper Mining Pick for like 600g or so.

These items priced at stupid prices are posted by gold sellers, its their way of moving around cash within the game.

I’ve come across these as well. I walked up to a tree to cut it down the next thing I heard was a Arhghghgg sound as a bot logged in dead next to the tree and 2 seconds later disappeared again. It was pretty funny actually

Red I would say as that’s the colour of the fabric on it or a tan brown which is the colour of the wooden frame.

Well there are currently a lot of issues with weapon kits, personally when I use the FT even with the FT Jugga trait and 6 mights stacked I lose 200 power over my pistols.
Not to mention the other stats on both the weapons including sigils.

They really d need to fix it so weapon kits for the engineer use actual equipped weapon stats, else you might as well go through the whole game using FT kit and never actually equip a weapon.

Increasing DPS output

From what tested the condition damage increase sucks as much as the healing bonus. You really want to stack as much Precision, Power and Crit damage as possible. If your not already using it pick up the piercing shots trait at the end of the power line.

Not sure what issues ppl having with loot...

There were some gems in the loot though at least, I got The Chosen, the shield precursor. Was very happy about that.

Are there any Lost Shores event-only items?

I don’t believe so, the reward at the end of the event if you do all 3 parts appears to be 5 consortium tokens.

@ tomlin.8204 No one is forcing me to play it, and I stopped playing it just before I posted. I went and played another game instead.

That’s exactly the point, I left the game to go play something I would enjoy. Not a good sign for GW2.

You don’t have to do the puzzle, you know…

Let me tell you something: I am a quitter. I am a huge quitter among a guild of people who almost never quit, okay? Usually, if I don’t get it right the first few times, I dismiss it as too hard and quit. I myself had that problem in GW1: After two unsuccessful attempts at a mission, I would consider it too hard and give up on it.

It took me 2-3 hours of trying this jumping puzzle to FINALLY get it right. I didn’t give up, whereas most of my guild members actually DID. The feeling of accomplishment was so great that I decided to keep going…I beat it 11 more times.

It’s extremely frustrating, yes. Castlevania hard, even. But once you’ve figured out the right path, the right timing, exactly where to jump and when to jump…it’s semi-simple. If you really care that much about completing it, then don’t give up, you’ll get it. Otherwise, don’t worry about it. Relax and enjoy the rest of the game.

Incidentally, I do feel it would’ve been better to make this an instanced event, instead of making everyone do it together. I was one of those “fat” charr that people have been complaining about…I felt so bad about blocking people’s view that I stopped and changed servers when people started complaining, and stopped altogether after my 12th victory.

I completely agree McCloud and I stopped playing just before I posted the thread. I’m not a quitter either, usually I continue to do something until I succeed at it.

However saying that I simply have better things to do today, this is supposed to be a fun event and no matter how great the sense of achievement after doing it, its simply not fun to run it.

Surely ANet can make content that is both fun, challenging and make you feel like you achieved something at the end. Its not that hard other MMO’s have been doing it for years.

So in short ANet, no I’m afraid I wont be doing your content sorry, make something fun and worth playing and I will log in and play it.

I am one of those that haven’t done Clocktower puzzle yet, but still I think that it’s very nice idea to add some harder content to Guild Wars 2 and this is a good start. Seriously, most of the events got feeling like Hello Kitty Online, having something that is not doable at first try is welcome.

To be honest I dont understand why you came here and whine, you dont need to finish it, you can try if you want to, but its not a must. At the end events like this will sepparate real players and the others, and even if am not one of players that finished it, I like the idea.

Ahh I see, define a real player then Spiky.

I don’t think you should push people who will tell you it’s easy into 3% of the playerbase.

I don’t have a lot of time to play myself, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Clock tower puzzle.
I kept my cool when I was failing, or I would just leave for a while. And it feels awesome when you finally complete the puzzle and you’re just dancing around next to the chest with the other 1 or 2 people that actually made it that try.

If it’s not your thing just don’t do it, mate.
It’s an event, it’ll be gone in 2 days.

The way you’re mumbling makes it sound like you’re actually one of those 3% that cannot have fun in a game and has to complete the puzzle cause it gives an achievement.

I’m one of those player who would like to enjoy the content that’s being developed and no I’m not finding it fun.
A lot of people are also saying the same thing and really Anet should know, if no one give an opinion then they are going to start losing their player base to people who don’t have hours to try, try, try, try, try again.

This jumping puzzle and giganticus lupicus should be a newbie filter in the starting mission.

Ah I wasn’t aware that GW2 was supposed to be a job whereas we needed a certification to be able to play it.

I bought it because it looked a fun game, sorry.

Best event ever.
So freaking awesome and fun because
1) you get loot
2) it’s a challenge but not too hard

I also understand there will be a load of people here commenting with things like ‘its easy’ and ‘your just a bad player’ these few people however make up less than 3% of the player base and have no idea what it is to play a fun game.

where do you get your statistics from?
Cause they are wrong.

Are they? How much are they off by Aeri?
