We want something that we will be able to skirmish with and be able to get way from a group of people instead of getting zerged down.
I would suggest you make either a warrior (greatsword) or a d/d elementalist then. They are the two most mobile classes, multiple condition cleanses, tons of travel, pretty much uncatchable if built right. They both also have decent burst potential, good for skirmishing/wandering.
New siege weapon, works like traps, consumes 10 supply, replaces weapon 1-5 with new bundle 1-5
SPYGLASS
1-“what was that?”
allows you to check the status of nearby capturable points (i.e. see the health of walls and doors and living/dead guards
2-“who goes there?”
spots characters, prevents them from stealthing for x seconds
3-“We’re gonna need a bigger ram”
Mark siege equipment, marked equipment now appears on the minimap
4-“Shoot Heeeeeeeer”
marks a single player, they appear on the minimap for a short duration (low cooldown)
5-“Help!”
ground target, all enemy players in area are marked and appear on minimap for a short duration (long cooldown)
You could give xp and loot to people who mark siege/players that get destroyed, even create new missions for completing scouting tasks that involve the new siege. Or just something to make it lest of a punishment to scout.
EDIT
ohh, just had another idea. Or you could make it an item like the star of generosity. You double click an item, it eats 10 supply and pops out a spyglass with a limited duration for use, can only be created x amount of times per day.
(edited by Waterbear.2764)
Single use siege weapons.
They would work like conjured weapons. After double clicking on the item in your inventory you spend 10 supply and equip a weapon with a different skill set with X number of charges. The weapon does almost no damage to players, but increased damage to siege weapons, doors, oil, cannons, etc.
Because sometimes you just want to break their siege.
Guardian here.
Is it really that easy to kill a ranger?
I mean, I’ve never been downed by a ranger (thieves I’m looking at you), but closing the gap is much harder than reducing incoming damage.
Catch a ranger with a greatsword? Yes. His only travel skill is his greatsword 2, just like yours, the only difference now is what else do you have to help you catch him. Got a scepter? That root does wonders. Hammer, more root, staff swiftness will let you eventually overcome him, and that isn’t even going into details about utilities you could use.
The other part of the catch equation is avoiding the rangers skills that will slow you down. Their longbow 5 is stupid simple to avoid and it roots the ranger to cast it. The only real threat comes from pets (horrible tracking on moving targets) and longbow 4, and possibly their elite skill. Granted, if they use the roots elite instead of the Rampage as One then it is debatable how much this post refers to them, because that was the rangers being discussed here. Again though, that leaves two abilities, one of them elite. You have aegis, and the ability to roll, numerous cleanses.
ETA: forgot to mention greatsword 4 can also be used as a snare. Its relatively easy to see coming, for gods sakes they are throwing a greatsword at you. It also means that they are giving up their ability to block.
You get the picture. And to answer the other snippet, yes, a meditation guardian wrecks the hell out of a power ranger
(edited by Waterbear.2764)
I have played ranger a considerable amount, both before and after the patch. Power rangers aren’t the duelist gods people make them out to be, they pale in comparison to condi rangers when it comes to that role. What they are, is “newb killers.” New players, or players that are unfamiliar with the class they are playing are going to have trouble with them, the same way they would with a hundred blades warrior. That being said, some tricks and tips to counter rangers.
-rangers love to start fights at max range, they are going to test poke and fire even when their 1 skill is red due to range. This is usually when people notice and attempt to engage. Once you start to get close, the ranger is going to reflexively use point blank shot, you can easily anticipate and roll.
-rangers will almost always follow up knockback with their 2 longbow ability, if you know when a skill is coming it is easier to encounter
-rangers only snare on longbow is a channeled ability that has a delay between the beginning of channel and the effect taking place, it also locks them in to place, mobility is your friend against a ranger. Since they spend most of their time trying to fight at max distance, punish them by simply stepping out of their max range, it is very hard for a lb ranger to chase at range.
-take note of their pet. Dog/wolf types will tend to knock you down, they also have a fear that is easy to see coming and avoid(they howl). Spiders will immobilize you, again it is a slow projectile and easy to avoid if you pay attention.
Now for some more class specific stuff
Necro
-power rangers have terrible condi removal, chills and cripples will ruin their day
-you can easily use your swiftness/location return ability to close distance with a ranger. Run out of his range (they suck at chasing) and when he is near the point you used the skill, simply return and deliver the beating.
-lich form stability will make rangers cry
Thief
-if they use sic’em on you, just run. There is now one person in all of the WvW map you can’t stealth murder, I am sure you will survive this indignity.
Mesmer
-much like necro, conditions will ruin a rangers day
-many abilities like ranger 2 and 5 are channels and highly succeptable to interrupt
-pierce is great on zergs, but it doesn’t provide good cleave on clones unless they all decide to form a conga line. Use clones to your advantage
-reflections, good god
Guardians
I don’t really think this class has trouble with ranger, easy access to stability and blocks, high damage output, good gap closers
Warriors
again, I don’t think they have an issue, good gap closers, stability, high damage output, even reflections, not to mention all that health regen
Elementalists
you should reliably murder the ranger on a d/d ele but assuming you have a staff
-earth 3, I have seen elementalists kill stupid rangers with this skill alone
-weakness, apply it. Rangers have terrible condi removal, and power rangers will notice the significant dip in dps
-use earth wall and the water 4 ability to limit the rangers movement
Engineers
Yet another class I really don’t see having an issue with rangers. Easy access to block/reflect, gap closers, immobilizes, conditions and immunities galore.
There is definitely a lower skill entry level for a ranger to be able to blow up a player than for some other classes (its not really that different from bulls charge + hundo) but that doesn’t mean its op. Different classes are going to present different problems along the learning curve for WvW. Skilled players can counter, and kill a ranger, it isn’t really a hard counter to any class in the game except maybe some necro. Even then, they can be escaped, which is far sight better than some other classes, hint hint rhymes with beef.
How about a new npc? The sapper, can be used to weaken walls, purchased at your base. Escort quest to kill/protect him, if he survives for 5minutes at enemy location (you could choose) then he temporarily reduces wall/door hp, or perhaps he disables doors so that people can’t port in for 5 minutes,, disables cannons/oil for 5min, you get the idea.
For the defensive, think of towers in SB. Giving a blanket AE buff, but constantly draining while on. So you hire a specific mercenary and as long as they patrol the walls applying their buff they drain supply. Have a sylvari windmaker who reduces enemy projectile damage by 10%. Mack das Messer, a grizzled old mercenary who will increase the damage for all dagger and 1h sword skills while he is active. Legless the archer, with his flowing blond hair, and no legs. Luckily his ettin sidekick HURRDURR (its all he ever says) carries him everywhere, so he can still shoot, and give a damage buff to all short and longbow skills. Only one npc can be hired at a time (they are fickle) and the choice would go to whomever claimed the tower/keep/garrison.

The fight at Eredon Terrace Garrison tonight, was funny. Me and the other 4 guildies on, managed to ninja golem a tower. Not being satisfied with just that, we moved on to the garrison for kitten and giggles. We pushed through the water gate totally unopposed. This is when we noticed that AR was already sieging the place. We manage d to break in before them, down the claimer without the defenders noticing, then cap.
Indignation on the claimer put a few waves down, still too many apparently to stop you entirely. As it was, more than enough of you fell victim to pad the coinpurse so that the repair bill didn’t sting after you finally targeted us. Good fights, good fun.
You might be experiencing the super secret alt+f4 stealth that has been rising in popularity lately.
Though off hand, direct stealths that I know of are thieves, engineers (the kit on elixer s), mesmers, and rangers have a trait that “camaflouges” under certain conditions. Other than that, any blast/leap in a smoke combo field grants stealth.
If you don’t want to take too big a jump in brackets you could always join us on GoM. The fights the past two weeks have been awesome, and I know that the rest of my guild [SoB] enjoys seeing you guys on the field as it means good fights. I also understand if you just want to get out of this bracket, or if you fear bad blood transferring to another server that your current is fighting against.
Wish you all the best of luck, the few I have talked to from your guild are all polite considerate and dedicated WvWers. If you go somewhere else, rest assured, you guys will be missed, hope to see you around, whether as friend or foe.
GoM keep up the good work!
I opened the pic to see a few [SoB] in the midst of a sea of red names. Glorious! Signet of Buckwild living up to the name.
Lets set something aside here. The jumping puzzle is a resource node, just like a supply camp or a tower. Would you complain about someone camping a supply depot with arrow carts? “OMG tell those jerks to stop camping, how are we supposed to get supply?”
You see, when you complete the puzzle, you get free siege blueprints, and tokens which you can use to buy more blueprints. You then proceed to use these blueprints to break doors/walls and generally do unpleasant things to people from other servers. Of course they are going to try and stop you. They should. If you knew someone was going to try and kill you later, and you saw them walking to pick up a gun, and you had a chance to stop them, wouldn’t you?
Why do you think ANET put in all those traps? They want this to be a contested resource. You want people out of the jump puzzle, get a mesmer yourself, portal>stealth>portal then you and your friends stomp the 5 guys griefing you.
Also, great fights everyone. AR and BP, you guys have been giving good fights, hoping this is another awesome week just like the last. After all the doomsaying of some people about what taking out orbs would do to WvWvW I am glad to see that people are still eager and willing to queue it up and mix it up.
Goat is a guild? This totally explains it. Yesterday someone in mumble was talking about, “going and killing some more goats, I need badges.” Was thinking to myself “wtf there are goat npcs in WvWvW that drop badges, how silly.” Totally makes sense now.
Somebody wake up GoM.
Oh, let me tell you a delightful tale. Once there was a beautiful server, named gates of madness, who lived in cluster with her brothers and sisters. She was vivacous, and ever so clever, but not nearly as strong as her siblings. They would pick on her, call her names, and recite meaningless platitudes like, “this will make you stronger” as they beat her. Then, one day, her fairy godmother appeared, and asked her, "what would you like my dear?’ GoM smiled and replied, “I want to be stronger like my brothers and sisters!” The fairy thought for a moment before replying, “done! There is a catch however… but you will see.” The next day at the start of prime time, when GoM met with her siblings, they were shocked. What had happened to the GoM they knew, where was this strength coming from. They toiled on and on, wondering how what could possibly have happened to bring about such a change. Then, at 12pm EST, the lovely server known as GoM turned back into a pumpkin…
Seriously though, we have never, ever, had a night time pop. The recent exodus from our server probably hasn’t helped in that regards either, see you at prime time tomorrow though!
Good fights, I have been aching for something like this since the end of 1 day matchups. GoM hasn’t had many matches that were anything approaching fun, this one feels different. Best part, is the comeback that AR seems to be making at the moment. I don’t care who wins at the end of this, just so long as the match keeps going the way it did today.
Hell, I would settle for server specific forums right now. The ability to communicate, and establish a dialogue with those on your server is not exactly the easiest thing to do atm.
I wrote up a ton of guides ranging from general WvWvW info, to maps listing siege equipment drop points, maps with countersiege points. In depth guides on how to go about sieging towers, keeps and garrisons, with specific detail given to who is defending, their strength, supply, and other positions held on the map. The problem is, I have no where to put it, and quite frankly, I want to see this go somewhere where it helps my servers community.
Starting an alliance is a good idea, but a broader, and generally more beneficial thing, would be to push ANET to give us server specific forums.
A wonderful place during prime time EST, and a ghost town any other
GoM
I would like GoM to be matched up against other servers that don’t have a night crew, like us. When’s that gonna happen…
Dear god, all I want is this. We were doing fine prime time. Crap, there was a solid hour and a half where we were actually gaining 30+ more points than yaks or sorrows. Now this?
You give DR for loot Arenanet, why not DR for capture point returns?
I have suggested this before in individual server threads, but I guess a general one here is better.
Don’t attack people from other servers while in the lake if bots are present. Regularly announce for your team to do the same. Basically, agree to a general ceasfire when it comes to bots, to allow the opposing team to kill them.
I regularly go in the lake with my engineer for some quick badge farming. My biggest threat, though, are random players who come up and kill you while you are fighting the bot horde. If there were a few people on each server informing their team of the service others are doing by eliminating your servers botters, it would go a long way towards encouraging people to get rid of them. This in turn, would discourage botters from doing so in WvWvW.
They only do it there now because of the fast spawns, good returns, and relative safety. Also, I don’t think DR effects WvWvW (could you imagine how messed up it would be if enemy players stopped dropping loot.)
GoM here, just wanted to say a few things.
To the people on SoR in [EPIC] thanks for putting the word out and letting me get some badges killing bots in the lake. You are good people. To the two random yaks bend who helped, sorry I didn’t catch your names, still you people are okay in my book.
Perhaps one day when the WvWvW system isn’t horribly flawed our servers will meet again. I would enjoy another fight against you guys where it doesn’t descend into steam rolling.
Some fun pictures for they day! Farmed me some badges of honor today. First was the lake in Yak’s Bend
Then to Sanctum of Rall where I forgot to take an after shot. Spoiler alert, they all died. But not until after 2 individuals jumped me while I was killing the pile.
If those are legit guild tags, you need to shame those people into oblivion. This happened again later when a bunch of [CD] kept trolling me and a few guildies in the lake on Sanctum of Rall borderlands. If people honestly want bots to be taken care of, they can either 1) wait for Anet to do something or 2) support those from other servers killing your bots. Judging by the current situation, it would behoove everyone to remind people regularly that “those killing botters are good, leave them be.”
Just saying. Anyhow, made ~50 badges today, looking forward to tomorrow ^.^
Edit: had to get rid of unintentional smiley
(edited by Waterbear.2764)
@Imperious: If you see botters just send anyone with a SoB tag a tell (right click to report then use the name to send a tell) and we would be more than glad to take care of the jerks.
@Gosu: Why so serious? Found out a long time ago, you can’t force people to do what you want, just do what you are going to do, take those willing to listen with you, and eventually the others will quit or realize you have it right and follow along. On GoM borderlands right now having good fights at Garrison with SoR, you should join ^.^
i like how GoM and YB are QQing like its our fault you’re useless ship jumpers transfer here… I personally dont want them here either because as soon as we lose there they go. Im not speaking for everyone, but i will speak for myself and say i enjoy playing WvW will the loyal ppl who welcomes CDS when when we first join SoR from SBI, garv, alpaca, Rouge stitch, and CharrCharr :c i dont want to go back to the brackets of spys, no honor hackers, and transfer supply users </3
I don’t remember any GoM qqing though its a big thread, will give you the benefit of the doubt.
As for the situation, GoM has been in freefall since the week long match startup. Losing game after game, until last week. I am not sure how the matchups are calculated, but this just feels wrong. We have never had a night presence, ever, and while “ship jumpers” may have been a problem, I believe the exodus from this server honestly ended after the second weeks loss, with the majority of leavers departing at or before that point. The only problem is, we never really recieved an influx after that.
We still go out, we still fight, take towers and the occaisional keep for an hour or two during prime time, then we go to bed, and wake up to everything being blue, only to repeat the process at prime time again.
GoM here, just wanted to hop in and thank SoR for the good fights tonight. Spent a few hours on YB borderlands, doing the back and forth with our small crew before logging. The fight at west keep was fun, even when YB came and joined in. Which reminds me, YB you probably shouldn’t break the siege equipment of the people who are attacking the same place as you. Wait for them to breach, then wipe them, don’t make life easy for the defenders.
Anyhow, nice fights.
This is how I do it on my mesmer. You would be shocked how often nobody checks there.
I would just be happy to see them disable the orbs entirely till they get everything sorted out.
Woah woah woah. If all the person did, was happen to be underground, then you might be jumping the gun a bit. Any mesmer can tell you that every time they use staff 2 they roll the dice, and sometimes the game glitches us underground. Depending on where that is, sometimes you have little mobility, sometimes a lot, but the only way out is to use a waypoint, and if you are throwing AoE attacks at their location, you are just preventing them from teleporting out. Just citing another possibility.
And all I’m trying to point out is that one well-timed aegis/blind/stun/whatever turns that 14k that I have to spend all my points speccing for into a big fat zero.
Feedback…
Just saying. My mesmer doesn’t need to do high damage, others seem to always do it for me.
Protip: learn compass points for quick communication.
e.g 30 HoD hitting NW gate of E keep, 10 heading to NE supply.
Each map has different names for the towers, keeps and supply. Seeing as the borderlands maps are laid out the same, learning the compass points for these locations is often easier.
Oh dear god this.
Also, use top and bottom supply for the north and southmost ones instead of labeling them N supply after having several incidents of “but which N supply.” Other than that it is simple, you have an E and W keep, and only one Garrison, directions are different on EB, but this will save 75% of the people out there schlepping around in the borderlands.
I apologize in advance to the others in the thread for the double post, wanted to address this separately.
Yes, I looked at it. That week the cheaters once again gave you a temporary lead early on, and by Monday you were losing, and your participation dropped precipitously due to that.
That graph does not show SERVER population. It shows server population participation in WvWvW, and even then, it only shows queue size. The times when your queues were empty, you still had people in WvWvW. You could have been at WvWvW map capacity and had 0 on that graph, simply because there weren’t people waiting in the queue to get in. It says nothing about how many are already in, or how many are on the server.
You are moving the goal posts here. What we are talking about, is WvWvW population, server population be kitten For all we know, GoM could have an unhealthy and low pop, with 90% queueing to get those high queue times, making it seem on par with a server that only has 15% queueing but has the same times.
We can’t know the actual pop, we were never discussing actual pop, this is about WvWvW pop. The long and the short of it is, we don’t have a pop that is competitive to other servers.
My post, however, discussed why those on your server — and you clearly have enough to have all map queues very high on weekends — decide to simply give up as soon as you don’t look like you’re leading any more.
This is just flat out wrong. We have never had “very high” queues on ALL servers, ever. Look again, we barely have queues on 2, and that is only on the weekend, at prime time. The high queue times on the other two are due to what others have already stated.
We focus. When we get a group together, muster the troops and fight, we do well enough. Not saying we are the best there is or even the best in this bracket. What I am saying, is that the stomping you see taking place, is indicative of an imbalance, and not in talent.
b) Americans, Europeans and Oceanics should all be spreading themselves around multiple servers for the sake of competition. To many realms have an over-abundance of one group, but little or none of the other.
Until they implement guesting I really don’t see this as a viable option. Spread out, so that finding people for pve is a kick in the balls? WvWvW is big, but not anywhere near as big as the PVE world. So many zones, people get spread out, and people congregate on one server so that they will run into others, doing similar things, with similar interests. Switching to a server that is dominated by people of another timezone reduces the amount of interaction you have with others, greatly.
Even if they were going to start guesting tomorrow, unless people have a large base of players already friended, that is a pre-existing network and not just casual in game connections, they still couldn’t leave server without alienating themselves from the only people that play when they do.
Diminishing returns on caps would easily fix time zone gaps. That, and fix orbs, so that 3 capping while your opponent isn’t on isn’t an insurmountable obstacle.
So what changed? Are you claiming that TC and SoS have so many more people that play during non-NA primetime hours than you do on weekdays? Clearly SoS does; they’re an Oceanic server. TC, on the other hand, doesn’t. TC has a fairly poor non-primetime presence.
The official queue time graphs for GoM show that you actually tend to play during NA non-primetime
Stop right there, did you even look at the graph you linked? You have the audacity to say we don’t have a population problem? First, that graph only goes till the 18th at which point there was no queue on 2 of the 4 possible destinations. Second, you will notice that the login was on a steady decline as the graph progresses.
I can say, first hand, I haven’t had to queue once this week, not even at match startup. Also, as already stated 90% of the time we run with the outmanned. Crap, I remember running with 20 TCCM, taking and holding a keep and two towers and we still had the outmanned the whole time.
I don’t care if the graph shows that we HAD a decent pop, because right now we don’t HAVE one, and the graph indicates just that. It shows a steady decline, and as much as you want to puff your chest and act as if this defeat is some righteous act delivered from a hand on high, we were destined to lose from the start. We simply don’t have the numbers.
The real test, when you get up, do you run to your downed clone and try and res…
Honestly everyone seems to be picking up on this “clever” tactic and pretty soon everyone who enjoys WvW will be rolling a mesmer because of how powerful portal is. Eventually majority of our time in WvW will be spend hunting a class that can go invisible for long periods of time in the hopes of preventing them from bypassing the very mechanics that make WvW special. May as well just rename WvW “Mesmer Hide and Seek Match”.
Mesmer portal is working as intended but its working far too well, I hope it can be adjusted in a way that still makes the ability unique and interesting without leaving it in the overpowered state its in.
Mesmers can’t stealth that long, and one of their stealths poops out a clone, which means you still see that someone is there. They have to aboid aggroing guards or the dreaded orange X will appear letting anyone looking at the map know that something is awry.
As someone else said, if there is such a terrible defense on the keep that they don’t notice
-an enemy running around inside
-an army massing outside their walls
-lack of enemy zerg anywhere on the map
then I firmly believe you deserve to lose that keep.
To sum up: GoM didn’t lose this week’s match due to lack of population. They lost because they stirred some righteous anger in the members of TC and SoS due to the presence of a few unscrupulous cheaters on GoM, and then because GoM apparently just gave up and stopped queuing.
You are saying that me logging in and 90% of the time having the outmanned buff isn’t the reason GoM is losing? That sure is good to know, for a second there I thought we had a WvWvW population problem.
It would be nice to get some new blood, especially on the night crew. It sucks when 11pm pst rolls around and suddenly there is no one to be found, anywhere.
If you do manage to find some guys to run a 5 man with, and go grab some supply camps, you inevitebly get run down by the horny horde of 40+ people from the other servers who are hard up for a fight.
Like the others have said, we do well in fights when we have numbers, regularly win engagements, we just don’t have the numbers to hold out on more than one borderlands, which results in loss after loss after loss…
They need to change the way the system works in order to change the incentives to favor a better set of player behavior.
How to limit total dominance and runaway games?
-Diminishing returns: The longer a resource is continuously capped by a single server, the less points they recieve for it. This will reduce the runaway effect.
-Capture Bonus: Give a bonus for capturing a resource that has been held for a long duration with the bonus increasing as the duration of the capture increases.
These two effects combined would encourage people to take objectives, and more importantly would incentivise the 2nd and 3rd place teams to attack the 1st place team rather than destroy each other. In this way it becomes a king of the hill scenario, where people struggle to stay on top, and are constantly ousted by the other 2 servers, with whomever is able to stay atop for the longest being the winner.
Also, change the way orbs work. Once you have 3 orbs, it is almost impossible to take them away from you, when you look at it, it seems rather silly. Already winning handily? Here have this buff so you can mercilessly crush the people you were already stomping, depriving them of any real hope. How about instead of giving bonuses to player stats orbs give a +2%, +4% +6% bonus to points at the end of each 15 minute tally?
Please remove fort exits in WvW because when a lot of people run through them the game does not load up all players….
Oh, please nerf warrior healing, all other classes effect 5 people only, this is an unfair advantage to over other classes.
Oh, close down the servers to prevent night capping because X server does not have X coverage…
…
/yawn
You seem sensible… expect people to ignore what you say.
My Bugfix
Fix the ‘kits as bundles’ problem and let us have sigils, stats and autoattack working like we’ve been told is coming for so long.
I second this.
Change
Rifle #5. People use it for jumping puzzles… because it really does not jive with the engineer and the idea of a ranged class. You want to jump towards people? It isn’t even like it can be used as a chase ability, the animation is terribad long. You want to give a power with good utility? Change it to “supressing fire” shoots in a cone in front of you 1200 range, everything in cone gets weakness. BAM.
Not even the worst part about kits. The worst being the fact that when you equip one and it replaces your 1-5 skills you lose the stat bonuses of the item/items you previously had equipped. When I use grenade kit I watch as my crit chance drops several percentage points, same for power and critical damage.
You can’t really do viable damage with a weapon, but when you use a kit, they reduce your stats… awesome! Also, any sigils you may have had equipped, also null and void. Here you go, lose 2 slots worth of stats and potentially 2 sigils, now go kill stuff!
Tested it with several guildies, and there seems to be no ryhme or reason to the nature of the queue. Calling it a queue is misleading though, as it would imply some sort of line, where in those who arrive first get seen to first, though this is clearly not the case as evidenced by the number of times we have seen those who have waited hours get passed by as those who try for a few minutes get in.
Simply put, it is irritating. Putting in some sort of counter that shows your place in line would be nice, at the very least, it would allow you to know if something had gone awry with your place in the line. It would also give you a general idea as to how many others are getting in, perhaps making you more understanding towards the wait. “What, 700 people in line, guess I will be waiting for a while.” As opposed to the click, wonder, worry and hope situation we have now.
