I find the Glint/Shiro combination very strong. Get up your might, swiftness, regen and protection in glint. Switch to shiro (gain fury by doing so) and nuke things down. Very strong.

Glint isn’t only buffs. You can also put your buffs on CD for other nice skills. It is quite powerful.

Some input on my S/P DD please?

This is the build I am running with at the moment:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQRAsa8an0MB1OhFmCGPBkmilriybDGhPo7mmuAY+5z+uH-T1REABLp87k9HYT/AAnEAHeCAIq+jWKBBA-w

It has high evasion, high condi cleanse, supposed to have high dps, good stun breaks, but very low HP and bad armor. In other words, it is a glass cannon that, if you can catch him, will die easily.

My strategy is, like all S/P builds, to port in, harrass, port out. Sometimes I would use scorp wire to change the pace and be unpredictable. Stealth is not necessary but optional by using black powder and dodge. The build is based on interrupts and pulminory impact.

My issue with the build is that using Black Powder and dodge is a bit clunky and not optimal. There are no ranged options in this build. The survivability obviously depends on skill with evading attacks, which has a very high skill ceiling that I am far from having reached. The build seems to fail spectacularly when facing monsters in HoT PvE that are immune to interrupts.

Can I please have some input on the build? What could and what should I change? For what effect? How should my rotation be? What should be my priorities when attacking foes? Which skills are most useful? Pistol Whip? Infiltrators Strike? Black Powder? Auto Attack?

I’m thinking of using other runes:
Rune of Evasion: Fury and Swiftness on Dodge on the cost of Precision and additional 5% dmg.
Rune of DD: Guaranteed crit after dodge, toughness and power on the cost of precision and ferocity (shift towards power build and not crit build)

I’m very thankful for any useful comments. Thanks!

It’s real problem. If look only dps build, only need to fix uch bugs and we get any new builds. But support ventari and tanky dwarf will be useless!

Was that a response to my latest post?

Why rev has no other build, except dps. No sup, no healer, no tank. Only dps (with some gibruds)

I used my build as an example of a buffing dps revenant that has pretty good condition removal. If you want to play a revenant healer, you can. If you want to play a revenant tank, you can. It is all up to you. But no matter what you choose, you can also focus on condi cleanse using traits, utility or sigils.

I was hoping that you would spent more thought on my long post after I took the time giving you two comparative examples.

In my build, I use the trait Cleansing Channel together with weapon sigils Sigil of Cleansing and Sigil of Purity. Since my playstyle is all about dumping all energy within 10 seconds and changing legend, I rinse 3 condis every 10 seconds. I think that this is sufficient.

Any comments?

How against new necro with permochiling and mesmers with condies?=)
And sigils has chense of trigger, some only at crits.

Among the sigils I have listed, only Sigil of Purity has a condi removal on hit (60% chance), which is less than every second hit. I find it reliable.

I don’t think that we can expect a perma condi removal class against a perma condi application class. If I was able to perma remove condi while also being good in other aspects of the game, I would say that this was OP. All we can expect is an acceptable degree of condi removal when focusing on other aspects, such as dps, buffs or evasion.

In my build, for instance, I could add Jalis (3 condi removal heal at 30 s CD) and the trait Versed in Stone to reduce condi dmg by 50% when Rite of the Great Dwarf is triggered. But that wouldn’t be the focus that I want.

How about we compare my build, that is very good in buffing and dps (Glint and Shiro) with other classes, that are good at dps? A meditation guardian is quite good at condi cleanse while also being good at dishing out dmg and being sustainable. He has Contemplation of Purity at 48s CD (with Monk’s Focus), Purging Flames at 35s CD (cure 3 conditions), and Smite Conditions on 16s CD (+1 trigger on heal with Smiter’s Boon trait on 30 s CD). Also, with Absolute Resolution trait, he would cure 3 coditions on 43s CD.

That is up to 12 condi cleanses in the first 30 seconds of a fight. Maybe even a bit more with good timing and under good conditions. Then the efficiency would vain due to variant CD durations.

My Revenant has 3 condi cleanses in 10 seconds, always. In 30 seconds, that’s 9. And over time, this condi removal efficiency is constant. And on top, there is Riposting Shadows for non-damaging conditions. I think that is very close in performance.

Also bear in mind that Meditation guardians like to use at least one utility that does not have condi removal or might want to prioritize another trait instead of a condi removal trait.

Additionally, my Revenant (using S/S) has access to a 2s evade, 2s block and a trait that helps restoring endurance so I can dodge (Vigorous Persistance). With these I can buy time, if there is a sudden condi unload on my character.

Regarding this example, I don’t think that we are in such bad a place. What do you think?

Remember the crying from mesmers when thiefs could burst them down from stealth, and now we can do the same and its ok all of a sudden? Come on be honest it;s insane now.

Remember how Theifs have been able to do this and abuse stealth for 3 years and everytime somebody complained they were called noobs and its a l2p issue but suddenly because Mesmer can do it its a problem?

When thieves could do a 100-0 burst from stealth everyone, including mesmers, complained and thieves said it is a L2P issue.

Now that mesmers can do the same, they also say it is a L2P issue.

There are three possibilities:
1) Both thieves and mesmers are right in saying it is a L2P issue
2) both thieves and mesmers are lying to avoid nerfs to their OP mechanic
3) mesmers are the biggest hypocrites ever

This community is sick. Even after getting buffed immensely, people claim that mesmers are not OP and that is a L2P issue. As someone else said, mesmers running the power shatter build can blind very often, stealth very easily, initiate a tremendous burst, can still sustain dmg from range, have access to several invulnerabilities and reflects, and have access to strong cc.

How can anyone not desperately trying to cling to the current form of Mesmer justify this, and go on to bash other professions? That is beyond deluded and hypocritical.

Mesmer has never been easier, and never felt more god mode. I do not feel like skillful play is rewarded any longer. I would welcome nerfs to Mesmer, or otherwise every noob will go out there playing a mesmer, abandoning other professions with far less power and options.

And I haven’t even switched to another class out of spite or just to drive home a message. That was the natural thing for me to do, in order to enjoy myself.

Do you mean I select the enemy, attack with the first two chains, deselect the enemy and do the third sword attack, pouncing through them before selecting the enemy again? If not, can you please elaborate on what exactly you meant? Sounds very cool, for sure.

I really liked the off hand Axe. The whirling is great in PvE of course, very useful against ranged attackers in both PvE and PvP, and the interrupt hits very hard, as you say, and is ranged. But easy to dodge, unfortunately. It seems to me that Axe is rather a PvE off hand weapon?

Hello people,

I decided to give Ranger a try and since I was sick and tired of the strong Condi builds on other professions, I wanted to go with LB direct damage and a melee weapon alongside it.

I find the Sword a very interesting weapon with lots of evades and the auto attack is quite unique with that gap closer every third strike. But unlike with any other weapon on any other profession, I can not strafe using Sword auto attack and I feel like I have limited options.

Could I please get some hints and insights on to how to use Sword the most efficient way possible?
How and when do you use it?
Which traits go along well with it?
What off-hand weapon do you prefer?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of MH Sword over other melee weapons?

Thanks in advance!

This reminds me of the time when they messed with Reveal and made the whole class feel clunky. As a result, the number of thieves playing plummeted to a record low.

Now they messed with Ricochet, a skill that was quintessential to P/P and P/D builds. After seeing the number of P/P and P/D thieves dwindle into nothing, they might finally realize once again that they have made a terrible mistake.

The most annoying part is that these mistakes would be avoidable if the Devs were familiar with thief game play.

All that these changes do is to punish the warrior for not anticipating an evade, using a burst before accounting for a block or aegis and charging into blind fields. On the other hand it rewards players who anticipate warrior bursts and react to it in time.

I welcome these changes. It will finally introduce some risk/reward to the warrior class, opposed to the no risk/plenty reward, which it was previously. Finally, I will feel a bit less sleepy while playing the class…

Alternatively, you could see it as a CD on the burst skill. Every skill that misses still has a CD. So why should burst be so special? It shouldn’t.

Very ignorant. Imagine there was food which would give me 400 condition damage instead. There would be no question if I would choose that or 40% condition duration. Short heavy ticking conditions are better than long light ticking ones due to the many condi rinses there are. If you don’t equip and trait efficiently, have yourself to blame.

I’m confused on why you are using carrion and worried of your actual sustainability the main point of using a condition build is to last and stack. How is that possible with your toughness and low condition clearing even with the evades? It feels awkward not using sneak attack on p/d especially in full passive style.

Trait wise I would still go SA and Bountiful Theft over Ricochet.

I might chose dire instead. But then I would solely rely on conditions, wouldn’t I?

PAIN RESPONSE and SHADOW STEP are quite sufficient to cleanse conditions periodically for me. I didn’t really have serious problems with conditions so far. Of course against a dedicated condition applier, it will get tough.

Evades are great for survival in my opinion. This way you can also avoid getting hit by conditions and stuns. And I rather evade an attack then just reducing some damage. But of course this is all personal preference. Reducing damage is a fully viable alternative, of course.

I decided not to use sneak attack much because the only condition I would be applying would be bleeds. And that is easily cleansed. I am thinking that if you apply a multitude of conditions, it is more likely that the damaging condition is not cleansed by the opponent. But that doesn’t mean I don’t use it. I usually use CLOAK AND DAGGER, SNEAK ATTACK close to the opponent and then use SHADOW STRIKE.

Bountiful theft I suppose would be preferable to ricochet in PvP and 1vs1 scenarios.

As long as there is condi duration food and dire, condi P/D will be considered ez mode by some players including me. If I bump into you in wvw and see +40% condi food, do you think I care about you having a different build than the average or the fact you have carrion instead of dire? No. I will most likely not even bother fighting you.

Going up against a build that you are not prepared to fight can lead to frustration, I know. But the solution to it is to equip accordingly.

I always pay attention to have sufficient condi cleanses with any build that I run. Increased condi duration is no problem in that case. Maybe you should try that one out yourself?

On some classes that I play (thief, ranger, elementalist etc.) I like to equip signets for increased movement speed while running and then change the utility skill to the originally intended one when engaging an enemy.

At the moment, when I see an enemy, I change the utility bar skill manually to another one before engaging. Apart from costing me a few seconds to do that, I also run the risk of finding myself locked in a fight with a signet skill i don’t really have a use of.

My question: Does anybody know of a way (mode maybe), which allows me to switch my skill bar, weapon set or my whole build on the run with just one key press?

No honour in this play style? A funny way to put it. Would you also say that SA builds are without honour? I don’t think I get your meaning properly, but let me give you my opinion.

No matter what you play as a thief, D/P, D/D, S/D, P/D… the play style is always in and out, high mobility and kind of dirty Maybe P/D stands out a bit because on top of being hard to catch, the condis just eat away at the health bar of the opponent.

I like P/D, because there are very few P/D thieves as I see it and it is a set which can make use of all skills on the bar. Even BODY SHOT is real great when I need to hold someone who tries to sneak/rush into a tower or when someone is running away. And I can feel that opponents are quite surprised when they face me while roaming. They don’t expect it.

I also like P/D and this build, because I don’t make much use of stealth. I like not doing that. Kind of a personal preference. The dodge spam is quite a lot of fun to me.

General Idea
This build aims to kite and force to kite enemies, while stacking torments and other conditions. It is strong in evasion, a large initiative pool and makes good use of steal.

Traits
MUG: Deal a bit dmg while having a 2k HP heal every 30 sec
QUICK VENOMS: Faster recharge of Skale venom, more torment

VIGOROUS RECOVERY: more evades, better survivability
PAIN RESPONSE: One of two condi cleanses with 30 sec interval

UNCATCHABLE: with this many dodges, it is a good tool for kiting
RICOCHET: makes it easier to deal with groups of enemies
BEWILDERING AMBUSH: great tool against classes with rapid attacks, especially D/D and D/P thieves

Utility Skills
SMOKE SCREEN: blind enemies with projectile finishers, protects from ranged attacks and helps in kiting
SHADOWSTEP: mobility and condi cleanse
SKALE VENOM: Torment
REAPER OF GRENTH: It’s great fun to go invisible and have this one active

Gear
All Carrion with Runes of Tormenting.

Strategy
The highest priority is to stack torment against enemies using SHADOW STRIKE. If the enemy is hit three times with this skill alone and allows the conditions to tick away, he is as good as dead. The bleeds with autoattack have the advantage that if the opponent rinses, he will rinse the latest inflicted conditions, and not the torment.

Dodging and leaving behind caltrops helps significantly to kite opponents. With WITHDRAW, the vigor gained from it, 4 points in acrobatics and the Sigils of Energy on the weapons, I can easily dodge 6-7 times in a row if need be.

I used to use SLEIGHT OF HAND instead of BEWILDERING AMBUSH. But the 5 stacks of confusion just pack decent damage. With stacks of corruption, it hits with 1050 dmg per enemy skill used.

SMOKE SCREEN is a great way to prevent damage when Endurance is running low, helping to recover endurance while hiding behind it. And by the time, endurance runs low again, SMOKE SCREEN is most likely available again.

Please advise on my strategy, my trait point distribution and my utility skills. Thanks.

Sounds like maybe you aren’t really a team player. Venomshare builds are quite helpful to your party, but require that you make a couple of sacrifices and not be the center of attention. It’s a net win for the group, though.

Yes, I mainly compare classes from the main activites that I like to do: PvP and small group/solo roaming. However, if other professions want to switch from self-centered play style to group-centered play style, they either don’t have to change anything or just switch a few utilities to supportive utilities. (and please, I don’t want to hear from anybody that thief only has to switch to SB to support… SB is boring… 2, 3, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2…)

So yes, you are right on what you said. But that brings up another aspect of criticism regarding the flexibility of thief to switch between self-centered to group-centered play style compared to all other professions.

IAnd D/D is as mediocre as ever and doesn’t get fixed for ages.

why d/d is broken and why d/p is better?

I didn’t say it is broken. I said it is mediocre. If you quote someone on one single sentence, make sure you refer to that single sentence correctly. The main issue with d/d is death blossom, which is a skill that is hardly used in crit specced d/d builds.

I wanted to add my 5 cents to this thread as well.

The sheer number of replies agreeing with OP’s criticism on thieves is very striking. People just have to see a trend and a general unsatisfaction with the profession here.

I have been playing thief, because I love the idea of it. Being sneaky, controlling the fight by mobility and stealth, having burst on demand, and so on. I have changed my build many times and eventually arrived at the P/D condi thief (20/0/0/20/30). In fact, I think my build is quite viable in solo roaming and in team fights. However, I don’t feel needed as a team member at all (except dishing out damage and looking daaaaamn hot!).

I appreciate the immobilise on body shot. It is really very very handy in a lot of situations and I don’t think that it is over-powered.

The other “buff” on venom share had absolutely no impact because
1) venom utilitiy skills are inferior to other utility skills
2) traiting to maximise the utility of venoms leaves us without very essential traits in shadow arts

Finally, there are the nerfs on S/P and S/D and basilisk venom. I don’t see a huge change on D/P, which I played a lot and find boring now. And D/D is as mediocre as ever and doesn’t get fixed for ages.

Even though I love my thief (looks great and the skills have great flair) I have put it aside and started playing with my other characters (mainly ele). I don’t play warrior, because I think it is boring and warrior skills just don’t look fancy…

In summary, I have gradually – over the recent patches – moved away from my thief, until she became completely idle. It’s really sad, because I invested so much energy into that class and that character, but I really don’t have much fun playing it anymore.

I would love to see more traits or skills, that help thieves
- break stuns
- clear conditions
- heal
In general, I would want to have more choice in selecting skills and traits that help the thief to survive (other than stealth).

Also I would like to see venoms reworked. Currently, they are a 4 out of 10, imo.

Finally, I would like to have the opportunity to change my weaponset from time to time and still be viable.

Edit: I wanted to add one last thing: When I’m in a party, be it PvP or dungeons, I get discouraged when there is another thief besides me. That, I think, speaks for itself.

Against warrior: Your mobility skill on daggers is just as good as a warriors, so stop whining about warrior mobility.

You’re kidding, right?
Because it’s not possible that this statement is serious, ever….

Warriors main mobility skills are #5 and #3 on GS, right?

GS #5 dash distance is just as long as elementalist dagger air #4.

And #3 dash distance is slightly better than dagger fire #3.

And warriors dont have any teleportation skills. Eles do.

Or are you talking about other warrior mobility skills?

Thieves are better with axes than we are

When a Thief used their F1 (Steal) on a warrior, they get our skill Whirling Axe (off hand axe 5 skills), except their version reflects projectiles and ours don’t. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

The reason for that is that the steal from warriors is arguably the worst one. Thieves are (as you might have noticed) the most squishy class if they are unable to prevent damage by means of dodge or stealth. During the whirling axe skill, the thief is at his most vulnerable. Therefore, to make this steal skill the slightest bit viable, it reflects projectiles.

I hope this answers your question.

The real question: Why doesn’t anet want us to be able to play bunker D/D elementalist anymore?

Revert the stunbreak on our cantrips nerf. Nobody is using the new stunbreakers you added to other garbage spells for pvp/wvw. Except maybe people new to the class. Nobody is using One With Air either.

Stunbreak was removed from many skills in game, not only from elementalist. If you have stunbreak on cantrips, elementalist gets unequally good in breaking free from cc. Balance is to balance classes, not to make one much better than others, so the players stop crying about it.

Yes. Perplexity runes are extremely cheese. It’s like fighting 5 mesmers at once. We have a bunch of things that remove conditions, but the cds are extremely far apart. These runes apply confusion every couple of seconds.

You are exagerating. Horribly so. Perplexity runes is like fighting 5 mesmers, lol. But what you need to learn is that each profession has a certain access to stun breaks, condi cleanses and so on. It’s up to you to decide which you want to put into your traits and utility bar. If you decide to run heavy condi cleanse, than stun-heavy opponents will have an advantage against you and vice versa. You can’t possibly want to be good against condition appliers, stunners and damage bursters. Stop crying.

How to win as a necro: Corrupt boon/ Fear spam.
How to win as a thief: perma stealth/Backstab.
How to win as a warrior: Heal through everything/Outrun everything.
How to win as a guardian/mesmer/lbow ranger: Zerker gear.
How to win as an anything but ele: perplexity runes. I mean, how do you even damage an engineer running these now?

Against necro: use a build that doesn’t prioritise boons. Have a lot of condi cleanse skills on the expense of others.
Against thieves: LOL, permastealth. Thieves dont have permastealth. But how to win: use AoE attacks and deny stealth by avoiding Cloak and Dagger.
Against warrior: Your mobility skill on daggers is just as good as a warriors, so stop whining about warrior mobility.

I dont want to go into detail for all…

So you want to go back in time to when D/D ele was dominating everything with ease and no other profession stood a chance. I can’t take you seriously. You are just crying.

If you are so unhappy, go and play a thief, or an engineer or a mesmer. The fact that people cry about a profession and still stick to it is because they are unable or too unskilled to play other professions.

There are so many things I read here and disagree with. Also a lot I agree with, of course, but I want to point out the disagreeable ones.

1. If conjured weapons become anything like the kits of engineers, it would be increadibly unfair. All that engineers have is their weapon set and their kits. Elementalist would have 4 skill sets of the same weapon set + the “kits”. Anyone, who seriously suggests something like that is clearly not to be taken seriously!

2. Elementalists have access to all different sort of skills, ranging from damage to stun break to condi cleanse and EVERYTHING. But just like with the other classes, you have to choose! Conjured weapons are another choice that were made more viable so more poeple would consider choosing them to put into their utility bar. Nobody says RELY ON THEM!!

3. Don’t exaggerate the buffs made to other classes. Thieves didn’t get any buff, because venom share builds are still practically non-existant. And the current builds were nerfed. This is just an example. If you want to know how the proffessions were affected by the patch, just visit their forum.

4. Elementalist is the most versatile profession in the game (maybe besides engineer) and the profession with the most spammable skills by far. As such, it would be utterly foolish to expect that elementalists are excelling in anything. Anyone, who wants elementalists to be on par with specialised professions that dont have the opportunity to be as versatile as elementalist is not to be taken seriously.

And more…

get a grip on yourselves.

If Anet expands stealth counters to others

Any class with an AoE attack has a good counter against thieves.

Any class with a way to block or deny attacks has a very good counter against thieves.

Any class that can immobilise has a arguably good counter against thieves.

I don’t think more counters are needed.

Correction, venoms also work with ricochet. Either I never realised or they changed it with the last patch? Did you realise it before?
