Today I got this email.

Greetings!

It has come to our attention that you are trying to sell your personal Guild Wars account(s). As you may not be aware of, this conflicts with the EULA and Terms of Agreement. If this proves to be true, your account can and will be disabled. It will be ongoing for further investigation by ArenaNet Entertainment’s employees. If you wish to not get your account suspended you should immediately verify your account ownership.

You can confirm that you are the original owner of the account to this secure website with:

https://account.guildwars2.com/allow-login….. Rest of link withheld to protect the idiots who might click it. :/

If you ignore this mail your account can and will be closed permanently. Once we verify your account, we will reply to your e-mail informing you that we have dropped the investigation.

Regards,

Account Administration Team
Thanks! —The ArenaNet Team

Scary huh? This email is obviously fraudulent with a fairly good email spoof designed to harvest your account email/password, add you to a botnet, then drain all gold and other valuables from your account.

As I have never given this accounts email out to anyone, I can only assume that somehow the GW2 email database has been owned by someone and now public to spammers.

Please remember to watch your accounts for suspicious activity, turn on two factor authentication, and of course don’t give out your password to strangers (or use 123password).

Second, in equal fights IoJ absolutely melts. For many groups people will stack and buff, but when we see IoJ we don’t even worry about stacking. Why you might ask? Well, you all are running zerk gear and crap for class composition. It’s amazing how many rangers I have seen in your groups. Re-roll or forever be a bag for the opposition. Sorry if the truth hurts but besides hiding in a tower/keep you guys are garbage only because you choose to be. Listen to guilds like MEND who know class composition and learn.

We hit SMC, bailed, then took your T3 tower while you guys sat in SMC and congratulated each other on the defense. But good job on the defense. You guys are surely superior at coverage wars.

Unreasonable WvW Title Requirements

in WvW

Posted by: Zen.2450

Zen.2450

So, I’m revisiting this topic again.

Lets take Ultimate Sentinel into consideration. To obtain said title you must flip SMC 500,000 times. Now lets say you and every other server go into a truce to flip SMC as many times as possible as fast as possible ever, and you only go up against 1 server at a time for it as well. Maximum turn around time would be about 10 minutes due to the invulnerability buff.

Doing some simple calculations we can see that at this rate it would take about 10 years to max your title if you do nothing but eat, drink, and sleep WvW for those 10 years. Accounting for eating and sleeping, but you being a lazy basement dweller then that time period would go up to 20 years. If you have a job, then 30 years. And if you have a family, well…

Anyways, as we can see, no one will ever get this title. Either you’ll die from a heart attack from sitting for so long in front of the computer, or the game servers will be turned off long before you make a significant fraction of the way to it.

Now, what would be a reasonable length of time for obtaining this title, something that doesn’t require the sacrifice of all things but GW2 to obtain. Say you play, and SMC flips about 2 times each time you play, reasonable as in most WvW servers with balanced teams it flips maybe once a day. You can’t be expected to always be there for the flip either. So lets say, being generous, that you happen to be there for 5 flips a week, that would be 260 flips a year. Now these titles should be for hardcore, long term dedicated players, people who put in several years of play, say 3 to 5 years. At this rate, I would like to suggest that this title be revamped with a upper limit of 1000 flips of SMC, 5000 at max.

Anyways, this is just one of the many unreasonable term WvW achievements. Doing some additional math we can see that for Ultimate Chaperone it would take 1 year at 1 yak per minute to obtain, and another 3 years for Ultimate Aggressor at the digital ghost rate of obtainment. All of these things will never be obtained. About the only title I think will ever be obtained is Realm Avenger, but that’s because Zerg v. Zerg can net you 50 kills at a time on higher end servers.

I would like to call for reform for these titles, to make them something that’s proud to be displayed, showing a dedication above and beyond for this game. However as is, they will never be displayed ever because they can’t be obtained. When will we see requirement reform? You’ve been changing many things in WvW, why not this now?

Also, yes, FA is getting sloppy (I’m on FA) and the reason is no competition. So we just karma train around all day, don’t even bother holding what we take. 30 minutes after taking IoJ keep, it’s theirs again.

This will continue until such time as we lose again and have to reevaluate our strategies. Until then, we will continue karma training and wot. So you know, just join in on the train, take back the things we zerg from and enjoy the easy living world achievements.

“Free-to-play” and “microtransactions” are dirty terms to some. That’s understandable. Famous Facebook Skinner boxes like Farmville have clouded attitudes toward today’s free-to-play games, and there’s an assumption all microtransaction-driven game design is handicapped by the need to create ways to charge players. For some games, this is certainly true, but there are excellent free-to-play games out there that represent good value for money. Below we’ve assessed some of the most common methods used by free-to-play games to make money from players, and highlighted some of the fairest examples of free-to-play that are worth your time.

Relax, why so mad? Cof 1 is just a DPS test. Of course it’s easy (unless you can’t frogger!) Ranger is useful everywhere—dungeons, fractals, jubilee. The point is that rangers main gripe, the lack of group buffs, has gone away now ghat vigorous spirits and spiritual knowledge were combined into a single adept trait, making spirits incredibly useful. Along with the spotter buff to 150 aoe precision, ranger is basically a good choice. Don’t take my word, just play spirits yourself.

It bothers me that you still troll the forums all day everyday, trying to say that there isn’t anything wrong with the Ranger class. I know you are entitled to your opinion…but come on man…even the people who were ADAMANT that the world was flat EVENTUALLY admitted they were full of it.

Whatever happened to good QC, or just the whole “play your way” philosophy? It wasn’t a bug used to farm Deadeye, just good player intelligence against predictable AI. It should have been left alone.

Zen.2450

One hit knock outs aren’t challenging, they’re frustrating and feel cheap.

Then ask ANet to remove the dodge system or do something else with it. In a game where, “Avoid ALL the damage!” is actually a pretty reasonable goal, about the only way to make encounters threatening is to make the damage completely overwhelming when it does manage to land.

I’m going to quote your reply because it was the last one about this; others have made the same point that OHKO damage is necessary, in various threads, so please don’t think I’m singling you out for any reason.

Obligatory disclaimer: I enjoy that this fight is challenging, and I’m glad people are fine with the fight and think it’s fun. I enjoy most of it as well, and I’m enjoying the challenge of defeating her (got her to 5% 3 times and ran out of time all 3), but I believe the fight can be better and more varied.

With that said, I’m still on the side that says one-shot mechanics are boring design. It’s uncreative and an easy/quick way to add challenge when you’re on, say, a 4-month design schedule like the LS teams are and can’t QA anything new properly (not a knock on the teams, btw, it’s just reality). The dodge system has nothing to do with it.

What’s a more creative solution? The arena already has gambits, so how about this: Every time you’re hit by one of Liadra’s (former) OHKOs or her visions, you’re given an uncleansable random gambit (or could be a pattern, like burning first, less damage next, etc). This will allow enough leeway for people to continue on while punishing players for not moving out of the red or avoiding the kamikaze visions and rewarding players who do. This would also make the fight more palatable and give it less of the “RNG” feel that players are, falsely, experiencing.

Another creative alternative: Every time you run into a vision, it morphs into a player class. So instead of fighting just Liadri, you now have to take on, say, a guardian NPC. These extra NPCs can’t be insta-destroyed by the light pools, so you’re essentially giving Liadri an army the more you get caught running into her visions. As far as the OHKO rain of death, it’s solely used in phase 1. The catch: every time it lands, it “poisons” that area of the floor, so every time you step on it you take DoT damage. The DoT strengthens with every “fall” of it, so the longer phase 1 takes, the more damage you’ll take throughout the fight. Essentially, you could have 1/4 of the floor dishing out 50hp/tick, another part 200hp/tick, and a 3rd 400hp/tick. Perhaps running the visions into a light pool will cleanse that area of the arena by 1 notch?

The orbs are perfectly fine, and I like their inclusion in the fight. Without the OHKO mechanics, they would also feel less “cheap”. Plus it’s nice you can use them for rallying.

While these may not be perfect solutions, they’re something I came up with in the past 2 minutes. My point being: There are creative alternatives that can be implemented; the issue is ANet has no time to play with anything different during their 2-week release schedule. The 4 month time limit these teams have is insanely fast, and what we’re experiencing is the growing pains of trying to develop MMOG content in a completely new way.

Which is also why feedback for these fights is necessary. The LS teams are trying to build a vault of various games/mechanics and will refine them as they continue along. We’re essentially the guinea pigs during this first year.

Excellent suggestions and nail on the head. There are much more interesting and challenging ways to approach the OHKO problem than are currently used. Now if only they had time and would use them. Please back off on the launch schedules for better content.

The fight is fine except the camera issue and timer. I’d give it 10-20 more seconds.

It’s all about trial & error. You must repeat is so many times you get used to it. Just like riding a bike, playing a guitar, … And noone argues playing a guitar isn’t skillful.

I want more of the same content. More hard stuff please. At least one hardcore thingy per update. Anet is already catering too much to casual players. Let us who want more hard stuff have at least one thing per update. Please? Pretty please?

When did challenging and fun become “repeat this event over and over until you have memorized the mechanic thoroughly and can repeat it in your sleep to win”? Good boss fights are ones that introduce mechanics over time and can be beat on the first or second run through (eg: Metroid Prime, never had to do a boss more than twice because learning their mechanics was intuitive and well planned) not one that require as some people have stated, 80 – 180 runs to complete. That is not fun, that is punishing.

Critial Diff between Challenging & Punishing

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Zen.2450

Zen.2450

Punishment means you lose something valuable when you fail. This concept is not new. It adds risk. When you do something risky you feel an adrenaline rush because you know the consequences of failure.

Without risk achievements are empty. The encounter might of been challenging but; the reward for success doesn’t feel the same.

I will disagree to some extent with this line of thinking. Emotional rewards come from many different sources. The rewards from the social aspects of the game have far outweighed any boss or battle in the game for me.

For the “adrenaline rush” I’ve stated numerous times it is not why I play a game. In fact, inducing an adrenaline response frequently should not be the goal of a developer. Because the stress response is not a healthy state to induce often.

I completely agree with the OP. It appears over the past couple of months the feeling of being punished and not challenged, has been creeping further and further into content.

I’m also not thrilled with the handling of our economy and the Gauntlet farming. Just last night I needed a rez and a Deadeye farmer ran over. Instead of giving me a rez, they just started looping in and out, leaving me for dead. That’s the kind of behavior this content is producing…..

I play PvP for adrenaline rush, where something really counts. PvE is for relaxation and fun, not punishing content with artificially inflated difficulty that breaks class mechanics.

I think a lot of people playing GW2 would have an aneurysm if they were raised on SNES/Genesis games where everything was a OHKO and if you didn’t make leaps of faith you’d restart the entire game lol

I grew up in that generation – with the Gauntlet, the problem isn’t with restarting or being forced back to a certain point, it’s with the fees and annoyances that are an unnecessary burden to it.

Pretty much this is the most annoying bit for me. Having to res at the center spot then spend a minute running back up to the top to reque, it’s tedious and unnecessary. Not to mention the repair/waypoint fees.

Immobilize

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Zen.2450

Zen.2450

Why are all the bosses in the Gauntlet immune to immobilize. It’s an unnecessary mechanic which annoys me as it makes 1 of my 2 useful elite skills worthless, the one that does the most DPS for me. The other is pretty useless as it is, because pets are worthless in the Gauntlet anyways (always one shot dead).

Pets, y u Worthless! AI Frustrations Abound.

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Zen.2450

Zen.2450

The Gauntlet is a punishing event for everybody, most bosses have a one hit mechanic that is hard to avoid and poorly telegraphed due to restrictive camera angles. But none of the bosses are as bad for Rangers as is Liadri.

Liadri has a one hit KO mechanism that covers a quarter of the map first phase, and half the map second phase. The only way to avoid this attack is to dodge, or just not be in the red circle area, which in itself is near impossible to discern due to the bad floor texture. This is fine for the human part of the Ranger, but what about the pet AI? AI doesn’t dodge. AI doesn’t do squat. AI sits in the red field you just dodged from and dies. Then if you swap out another pet, it does the same thing. Passive or aggressive mode, it doesn’t matter, either the pet is lagging behind you and doesn’t make it out in time, or it doesn’t dodge. POOF A large chunk of the Ranger DPS just disappeared for the entirety of the fight.

This is a very poorly conceived mechanic. While alright for the majority of non-pet classes (sorry MM necros) this mechanic unfairly punishes a large portion of the player community, mainly anyone who uses an AI in combat. Yes I know that Rangers have beaten Liadri even with this handicap, it does make it unduly kitten our class particularly.

AN, I as a Ranger want to know what you’re going to do to fix this gross oversight in programming. This problem isn’t exclusive to Liadri, it has been going on since day one of the game. Many people have proposed adequate solutions such as stowing the pet for a spirit bonus, or making pets AoE resistant. We want to know what you’re doing to fix things, so posts like this don’t have to be made in the future.

Also, pertaining to Cosmic Rifts and ranged attacks. Obstructed. Obstructed. Obstructed. Obstructed. Obstructed. Obstructed. Obstructed. Obstructed.

The thing you’re forgetting about this is in this particular instance the whole fight relies on you never being hit.

Sending in your pet for 5-10s, yes I do that during any normal battle. But in this case if you send the pet in even once and it gets hit, it could spell doom for your whole event because of fury stacking.

Not really. If you insist on a 30/30/XX/XX/XX type build, then make sure you slot pets heal on crit. Also, if you’re worried about the abomination stacking frenzy (had to correct you there…it’s not called “fury”; fury is what gives the player 20% extra crit. chance) and you don’t think you have the ability to keep your pet alive (even when on avoid combat and kept next to you), then don’t swap after it goes down. Rather, in the event someone falls, use your pet swap then for the swiftness (traited 5 in BM) for a quick heal.

Seriously though, in dungeons where you have to fight abominations, you might not want to trait full glass cannon berserker.

Chopps, get a room for your ego. I’m not 30/30 berserker. I do have 5 traited for the quickness in BM. I did leave my pet dead during the fight due to its liability. I know how to play a ranger. What I’m saying is that pets are not always good and can many times be a liability, especially since you can’t change pet types in combat (beyond your 2 swaps) to account for sudden encounters.

Second, the part of the video you don’t see (where I shaved off his first 1/3 HP) I did try using my pet, but he can A. One hit KO the pets. and B. Build fury off the pets so after that I found it to be better to just let my pet languor in death or he’d become to fast to kite. This issue would crop up no matter what pet I used, so a pet choice doesn’t help.

Ranger Vs Champion Abomination & Pet Critique

in Ranger

Posted by: Zen.2450

Zen.2450

So I soloed a champion abomination today (level 80) and just wanted to give some feedback on the fight with my Ranger, but first the video.

Now as it turns out dodging and slows were the most important part of this battle. I used shortbow #4 and the ice trap as often as possible to keep the monster away from me, kiting as usual.

However what was annoying during this whole battle was my pet. First off because it’s an abomination both of my pets utility skills were useless and so were their knockdowns. In the end the pets became nothing more than a pinata for the abomination to charge his fury off of. This is prime evidence of a need for a permanent stow option for pets, as in this case the pet is more of a liability than a help. Yes, I could have used some other pets, but generally people don’t always spend 10 minutes preparing before rushing into a battle. They take what they have and run with it, ala me in this video. However the pets would again have been relegated to the role of passive buffers for me during the fight and all the pet DPS would still have been lost.

There needs to be a permanent stow option that gives you a +25% power buff (plus additional effect for the pet stowed) for situations when using a pet is unadvisable or down right stupid, and there aren’t just a few of these situations, it happens all the time in dungeons or other team/group events. Pet/Minions may be fine right now for single play, but as a group item, they are not worth it and in general make a bad showing of the ranger class in total.
