Cool, thanks Electro. Grats on the blue blades, Lilith

I was stoked that the watchwork sprockets were on the TP and not too expensive, but then I looked at the crystalline dust. Yikes… lol

I was trying to obtain http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Advanced_Spinal_Blades to use with my character when I hit lvl 80 soon. I currently have Quad Spinal Blades and foolishly spent gold on the TP for materials. Had a busy week at work and now the Battle for LA event is over. I’m shy exactly 50 Blade Shards and am unable to advance the spinal blade pack any further… I think.

Is there any way to substitute something for those remaining 50 shards? Some kind of mystic forge stone/coin maybe?

Thanks in advance!

My home server (Henge of Denravi) isn’t terrible but it’s often times empty in the PvE maps. I only run into a couple players when there’s a champion mob spawned somewhere.

New Consortium Harvesting Sickle animation

Now that that’s fixed the pitchfork and torch side of me wonders how the original original pickaxe style animation along with the extended gathering time ever made it pass the design phase. Did they just lob the task to the newbie in the dev pit with no guidance other than “just look what was done with the molten pickaxe”?

As a software developer myself I’m not a fan of overly detailed design guidelines but it’s as if the person or persons who worked on it never gathered with a sickle before in game or looked up how a scythe is used.

My working hypothesis is the original animation was done up as a placeholder and nobody ever circled back to do it right.

I never worked on a commercial video game, but here’s my hypothesis:

For the most part, the game engine is code-complete meaning that new content is just a matter of scripting/animations/artwork. Except for critical bug fixes and any new features or optimizations that come down the line, the team ideally is not touching the game code at this point. In fact it’s risky to do so. Depending on what tools they have to aid content creation, it might be a trivial task to put together a gathering tool once the artwork is made available. Maybe it doesn’t even require a programmer’s involvement.

I don’t know if it would sit well with the game’s ESRB rating. Depicting real-life gambling (not talking about RNG items) is questionable. I kind of wish the game had a mature/18+ rating so that maybe we could have in-game casino huts or tavern poker matches.

the people that work on fixing things like right-click targetting are not the people that design Animal Hats and the likes.

I just find this to be an extremely poor counter argument. Those people working on the useless stuff can very easily be reallocated to more useful projects.

Put Animal Hats and Karka Queens on hold. Stop with the new stuff and go back and polish existing content. What happened to the “massive” dungeon revamp that only managed to graze Ascalonian Catacombs? What about a functioning guild panel? A LFG tool? 10 months in and this game still has massive holes.

Yes have the surgeons go flip the burgers, swap the burger flippers with surgeons. But don’t stop there, grab the guy who maintains air traffic control and swap him with a NYC taxi driver… Game may have holes, but so does your understanding of how programming and teams work.

So between the artists and the programmers, which would you say are the ‘burger flippers’?

Disabling right-click to attack/interact is certainly the safest first approach to this issue. There are two problems, though. Anytime you have camera-look and targeting on the same input, you will have conflicting behavior. There isn’t a bug that targets are randomly selected, but rather the game trying to be smart at recognizing clicks versus camera movement. Even when you think you’re perfectly clicking on a target, most of the time you’re also moving the camera a tiny, tiny bit. There is a small threshold that determines whether your tiny movement should actually be a target selection. Lowering this threshold will reduce the chances of this happening, but is one of those numbers where we need to sit on it for a while to see if it ‘feels right’. The problem could also be solved by completely separating the different functionality of selection, auto-attacking, and camera movement. However, completely splitting those is not something we’re prepared to work on at the moment as it is a much broader-reaching change. I hope this helps clear up what’s happening and what steps we’ll take to change it. Thank you again for all the feedback!

void AllInOneSmartCameraAttackInteractFunction(MouseCursor mc, MouseButton mb) {
	if (mc.movement <= TINY.BIT) {

		// FIX: Ugly workaround but quick fix
		if (mb.WhatAmI == mb.RIGHT_CLICK && Settings.DISABLE_RCLICK_ATTK_INTERACT == true) {
			return; // IGNORE
		}

		doAttackOrInteractTarget(mc, mb);
	} else {
		doCameraMovement(mc, mb);
	}
}

Couple bugs with this logic:

It throws away valid camera movements that are below the threshold when Settings.DISABLE_RCLICK_ATTK_INTERACT is set. I think the camera movement itself should still be processed, regardless of whether or not something is being selected.

Also, if there is a small camera movement (<= TINY.BIT) with no associated right-click, this code would automatically cause a target selection.

Venting: take it or leave it.

On the RNG issue, I think the issue is pretty well laid out – consumers should know that they should not engage in the RNG chests, but ultimately sufficient numbers do to make RNG chests the more profitable venture and as long as that remains the case..

I’ll submit that some consumers should perhaps not engage in the RNG chests. What all consumers should be doing is assessing their own financial situation and weighing their purchase priorities.

The reality is totally different and the extreme RNG and gambling boxes is a part of it. This is why people are angry at anet, they bought into the marketing and trusted anet based on their rep with GW1. That trust was misplaced and anet have been revealed to be just like most other game makers and publishers.

People who defend these practices want the games they play to succeed regardless of how the company in question behaves, because they have some investment. They either want the game to have more players, be more successful so it will stick around for a long time, get more development, release expansions, etc, etc.

It’s not fair to say that players who are not in the same bandwagon as you with regard to wanting to get rid of RNG item sales are motivated to turn a blind eye to unethical practices. That’s reaching too far, IMO.

I wager that most people who bought the game were hoping to be buying into a successful game. The game promised a subscription-free model, and that’s what we expect. We have to trust that the publisher can figure out the necessary monetization practices to keep it that way and we have to expect that they are out to maximize profit for themselves and their investors.

What I will agree on is that some people do have a gambling problem and that’s the only gray area where I think players have some good reason to criticize it.

But please don’t make a villain out of everyone that doesn’t agree with you by painting them as fanboys. That’s passive aggressive and weakens your persuasive essay.

I never said that those not with me are villains. There are those that are apathetic one way or another. I refer specifically to those who shout down at the others fighting against RNG. Those who defend the practice.

Even your post just now. You expect the game to succeed, you want it to succeed. The question ultimately becomes under what conditions you want it to succeed. And what conditions are you willing to see it eschew maximizing profit to maintain some integrity.

You say that as if there is no validity in defending it. If RNG is the difference between continuing to have a subscription-free game with content updates of the same caliber vs. not, then that’s a good reason.

I’m not saying that’s the case because I don’t really know. In fact none of us do, but it’s food for thought.

I could make the argument that subscription games without RNG are even less fair. In those models I have already pre-paid for items that I may never get. Additionally, it takes time to get them which translates to money spent on game time. There’s even RNG built in because I have to keep doing dungeons and looting bosses etc. in hopes of getting something. Therefore even in games like WoW we were buying RNG items!

At least with the gemstore I have a choice about 1) what to buy, and 2) whether to spend more money or just time (gems with gold) since the price of the game was fixed.

why not call for a gamewide boycott of gem purchases for a x week period?

I actually made a post yesterday (forget which exact thread) where I said that talking about it on the forums won’t change anything. I agree that an in-game response from players would be more effective. That would require a large number of players coming together for this cause, and that’s where we’d really see how much support and opposition there is.

What’s the alternative? You can offer the cosmetics as a straight purchase, but then everyone has them and they’re completely worthless.

This is an example of mindset that is completely alien to me. I just don’t understand how something might look better or worse depending on how many people has it. How? The item in question does not change at all.

It doesn’t look any different, but its perceived value diminishes when it becomes too common. I’m not saying I agree with the mindset but there’s some truth behind it.

Yes they’re in every free game. But the difference is those other games likely have new content added to them in addition to the RNG boxes. All we get from month to month in terms of new weapon or armor skins is from the RNG cash boxes. That’s a problem.

I thought they announced plans for an expansion pack? That’s really where I’d expect new armor/weapons.
