Somewhat off-topic question. I missed the interview and can’t find a place to watch it, anybody that can help with that?
Also somewhat off-topic: anybody know where to get patch notes for the small patches in between the major game updates each month? Seems there was one today but I don’t see anything on the news page: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news
The fact that Anet designed dungeons to operate with the possibility of multi server parties but never gave us a way to actually take advantage of that design is one of the stupider mistakes they continue to make every day I have to minimize the game to find a group.
Maybe it’s on purpose. If they leave players to self-organize in other ways, then no one can cry foul about unfair LFG practices in GW2 because GW2 doesn’t officially support it.
Yeah, like look at this example:
“Experienced Zerk mesmer LFG p1 farm. Zerk warriors only please.
”
or
“lf(2). cof path 1 farm. GOLD FARM!!!!!!ONLY FULL ZERKER WARRIORS. SELF INVITE. JOIN FAST!!!!!”
Doesn’t sound very open and accepting, so I can’t see ANet implementing such a system in GW2.
In fact it’s probably undermining what they’ve been trying to build all along.
(edited by dinominator.9862)
I didn’t know about the site until I saw this post, so thanks for that.
The problem I noticed though within just a minute of browsing gw2lfg.com is that it’s full of requests for groups with the old holy trinity mindset. People are posting their profession / build, and are looking for specific professions / builds to group with.
Isn’t the point of GW2 to get away from that?
I named my ‘main’ after, Sid Sycle’ a necro I had in GW1, I figure they are related in someway.
My Asura Thief, Dixxie Turpin, is named after a highway man from england.
LOL I think the forum software replaced the name in your link with “kitten.” That’s hillarious. It’s a valid English name (short form of Richard)
If it is truly leashing, why does it get to its leash area, then turn right around and come back?
Exactly!!
Also, you do realize that Spartan Hoplites were primarily melee units who used short swords for most of their combat, right? Methinks 300 has given people a rather illusory perception of how the Greeks actually fought.
Bollocks! Next you’re going to tell us that the Persians didn’t really use 100-foot-tall war elephants and sword-wielding ogres!
EDIT: BTW, according to wiki, Hoplites were primarily spearmen and preferred to stab from phalanx formation. Looks like it was not meant as a throwing spear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoplite
Hoplites also carried a short sword called a xiphos. The short sword was a secondary weapon, used if or when their spears were broken or lost, or if the phalanx broke rank. The xiphos usually has a blade around 2 feet (0.61 m) long, however those used by the Spartans were often only 12–18 inches long.

It’s gotta be a bug Paulyntz, here’s why I think so. In my case the NPC was attacking the sylvari outpost at Lynchcroft Mere (I looked it up), just north of the waypoint across the swamp. It’s a fairly small outpost and I stayed inside the event zone the whole time. I had to defend it from waves of undead, and that boss was part of the last wave.
Edit: If it’s a leash, then it’s too short :P
This has happened to me several times. I think it’s a bug, but I don’t know what triggers it specifically. I notice it when kiting the mob and running / dodging circles around it to keep my health up. The last time I this happened that I distinctly remember was during an event at the sylvari location in Kessex Hills where the swamp is poisoned (sorry, the name escapes me). There was a veteran mob that attacked and I almost won except that he ran back and regenerated.
I like to use a shield with my engineer in PvE, so that kind of gives me a warrior feel. Just need to pretend the mainhand pistol is a dagger or something… and get up close and personal. :P
Actually the wrench sounds like a good way to do it.
There should be a choice for players for both males and females. If people want to enjoy the fantastical world they play in with magic and lasers and minotaurs and undead by running around in skimpy armor that shows off how innately and conspicuously attractive their characters are, let them. Similarly, if you want to run around fully armored and boasting the thickest plate mail that money can buy to protect you from all sorts of enemies, go for it.
It is not for you, or anyone, to decide what others should or should not be able to do in a game of this make. I encourage and implore the developers to continue making skimpy and modest armor, so long as there are numerous options for both within all three armor types and across both genders.
I +1’ed this because I agree with you on the principle of free choice and equality, though that is a slippery slope in terms of social norms. There may be a community of players that would love to see male Norn frolicking about in banana hammocks, but I don’t believe that is (as of yet) as widely accepted as scantily clad females.
I’m not voicing an opinion for what’s morally right and wrong. My opinion is only that some things sell, and some things kill the game.
BTW that’s ^ not a rhetorical question… I’d appreciate an answer
I have a terrific Asura name ready to roll… which I would absolutely use, if I didn’t find the Asurans to be so insufferably egotistical.
Better reserve that name… it took me an hour or so of tinkering to get a variation of the name I wanted that wasn’t already taken!
The reality is people vote with their money. If the hoodies sell, they’ll become a mainstay. If not, then we may see a different direction in clothing.
yes it’s one of those things that just makes you scratch your head. same goes for minis.
I originally thought the boxing gloves were silly and no one would want that in the land of Tyria, but sure as the sun rises in the east, I saw someone with them.
I was once curious too, but I found out they don’t want people to be able to track them since there’s a potential for abuse. More info here:
I think its fun to name them something original then have the npc refer to you seriouly as a silly name. " oh no.. the centars are attacking… only you…Mr fluffy pants, can save us.
That made me lol
I can understand what the thought process might have been in deciding not to give too many specifics / numbers, since GW2 promises not to be a numbers game. I was actually counting on that, and try to play without thinking about numbers.
What bothers me is that when numbers are given, it’s not always clear how they apply. Take this Engineer tooltip (lvl 29) for example:
[Poison Dart Volley]
Fire a volley of darts that poison foes.
Damage: 40
Poison: 2s (86 damage), -33% Heal Effectiveness
Number of Darts: 5
Range: 900
Is that 40 damage total, or 40 damage / dart? 86 poison damage total over 2 seconds, or each second for 2 seconds?
Its my money i do what i want with it, why do you guys even consider this?
Actually, it’s fantasy money and the intellectual property of ArenaNet / NCSOFT.
As such it’s subject to their rules, and they have protective measures in place to spot gold farmers and bots. I think that’s what has the OP concerned.
The in-game mail system allows you to attach money, so I would say no. Cheating to get the achievement? Maybe
You can’t say “buy a better PC”, when you meet the requeriments to play this game.
Even with weaker PCs, if they meet the requeriments to play it, they must have an playable gameplay.
Two questions:
1) Have the system requirements for the game changed as a result of this?
2) What defines “playable?” The minimum requirements only ensure that the game runs, but to what extent? Should you expect to see all character models, or just name plates?
Of course, weaker PCs will be at a disadvantage. It’s like trying to play Far Cry 3 on a 2007 graphics card. If this ends up being the case, then “too bad so sad, get a better PC”.
We don’t know the extent of this yet because they haven’t made any mention about what kind of performance is expected with what kind of hardware. I actually asked that a few posts above and hope to get a response.
If the answer is “get a better PC,” then one would at least need to know how much PC is enough without overspending.
I’d be inclined to use it more if they didn’t keep switching back to armor everytime I took a hit.
… or used an ability.
I noticed that if I use Elixir S with my Engineer my town clothes automatically get switched out.
ANet team,
Any idea as to what hardware requirements are needed to render well in WvW with the full res models & character count? I know it’s hard to predict and will depend also on the number of people present in the battle, but I’m curious if you’ve found some reasonable hardware threshold in your testing.
Thanks!
Subscribed. And,
“servers with kitten”
^ what does this mean?
I use the town clothes when I’m just hanging out in the city, either crafting or browsing the trading post. I even changed the dye colors and thought I was pretty slick lol.
What does break the realism for me is running around when all the NPC’s are walking… so I mapped a key for run/walk toggle. Although I still run between the TP and the crafting stations b/c it takes too long
Guys i’m talking about character names, not account names. An account name is something that you can take with you from game to game and have for years on end. A character name, IMO, tends to be a little more tailored to the game.
@Aeonblade, I never said anything about passing judgement! This is all just in good fun.
@ProxyDamage, yes it’s a play on denominator and my real name. An old carry-over from my Quake II days that I never bothered to change. Anywhoo, my in-game characters have full first and last names, where I think it’s appropriate for their race. I probably wouldn’t do that with a Sylvari or an Asura.
It only irritates me on “official” RP servers in various games. If it’s not an RP server, it’s more of a “look at that idiot!” and move on type of thing. My kids are well-trained though; they will announce stupid names they find so we can all have a good eyeroll.
It’s all about impatience; they want to play, they don’t want to see “name already in use” over and over and over again. It’s worse when there’s no name generator.
I will admit to having name prejudice, though. I just won’t waste my time with someone stupidly named. I’m sure I miss out on some nice but challenged folks through that.
Hmm, never thought of it that way. I always took some time to tweak my character at the creation screen, and that includes thinking of a name. I didn’t realize so many people just want to hit “Go.”
Mustang GT? My Camaro SS will smoke that name.
haha, this is great… and fits my topic. Thanks for posting, Camaro Charr
At least there’s some creativity there in recreating the Hulk
It doesn’t fit the game, but that is cool in its own right.
I’m still waiting to see a recreation of Tastykake.
I don’t particularly care what name someone chooses for their character, nor am I an RPer. It’s never been a game-breaker for me. I am curious though if others also feel that it takes away from their immersion somewhat when they’re out and about in Tyria in the company of Eir Stegalkin, Caithe and Rytlock Brimstone, when suddenly along come “Tastykake” and his buddy “Mustang GT.”
Why do we do this?
I love it because I’m finally getting to play at my own pace, if and when time allows, and am still able to feel like I can make progress.
I wish my bank took security measures as seriously as my MMO.
It has a different connotation in American pop-culture (come on, admit it already). Nevertheless, it does seem a tad sensitive to suspend you for that. The way you used it is not a clear reference to anything, nor is it derogatory to any person or way of life.
Not to derail your thread, but I always wondered why many players don’t choose more RP appropriate names; something to tie in with the lore and back-story of their character.
I like the fact that whenever something is illogical or hard to explain, the answer is always magic.
The funny thing is, it’s a fantasy game… the whole thing is illogical and hard to explain
I think the answer to all this is: imagination.
He likely may have been discovered by ANet eventually. They’re aggressively implementing measures to crack down on this sort of thing, so you really need not feel bad about it. You helped protect everyone’s investment by keeping the game a little more honest.
IMO, leveling is not slow in this game. You so much as breathe and you gain xp, but that also makes it fun and makes it feel like less of a chore. I’ve been exploring a lot more in GW2 than I did in the previous MMO I played because it’s more rewarding.

Not that I’m aware of. The desktop is pretty clean and while I’m playing GW2 I try not to have any other apps open. The only backgrounded apps I have running are Avast! (virus scanner) and a monitor calibration tool called Spyder3. It doesn’t happen when running other games.
I’ll keep an eye out.
Okay, I just wasn’t sure I understood because it seems contradictory to have something available as both an in-game item and a real money item. I hadn’t seen it before GW2. Thanks!
@Ferum, you mentioned that they are using it to stifle gold sales. Is that by way of legalizing gold sales if purchased directly from ANet in the form of gems?
I see that you can buy gems using real money, and that gem cards are available for sale. I also see that you can convert in-game gold into gems. Isn’t that contradictory to what gems are supposed to be (a revenue generator)? Or are they intentionally obtainable by both real and in-game money?
Since I can trade gold for gems, does that mean I can play my way to the ‘Digital Deluxe’ edition of the game instead of buying it?

Admittedly I didn’t read each and every post in that thread, but the thread seems to be about the player losing track of the cursor or the cursor disappearing from the screen. I have noticed that too, but my issue is that the mouse becomes temporarily detached from the game. It’s like GW2 gives up its mouse focus and lets the mouse run free on my Windows desktop until I click on the game window again. Does that make sense?
When millions of people are spread out over only 8 classes…..the problem isnt that all of those people cant figure out the nuances of a class.
Its not an opinion when people say necro, ranger and engineer are weak.
The numbers dont lie.
Which numbers are those?
Do we have statistical evidence that across ‘millions’ of players, all the engineers/necros/rangers are weak? Or are we basing this on the experiences of those who have posted their concerns?
And for that matter, I thought GW2’s big thing was that numbers don’t matter.
I’m taking the comments about Engineers/Rangers/Necromancers as opinion, not fact. It’s not always immediately obvious how to play these classes. I play an engineer and there are countless different ways I could set myself up. The trick is finding the right mix of abilities and tactics to both satisfy your enjoyment and be effective.
My personal experience with the engineer was that I initially was overwhelmed with the broad range of abilities, weapon kits, turrets, etc. and the very loose connection between them all. Once I settled on a playstyle and build, and figured out which things I wanted and which I didn’t, I started to like my character. I currently play a rifleman in PvE with elixirs in my skill slots for buffs and condition damage. One day I might decide I want to do AoE support as a grenadier, or maybe defend an area with turrets and land mines.
It’s way too easy to have ineffective strategy with these classes, but that doesn’t make them inherently bad.
If anyone could use rifles that’s thieves. I can’t count how many times I wish I had a single-target weapon some with some more range against some bosses and on top of WvW keeps.
Doesn’t that go completely against the melee/stealth concept of a thief? I didn’t think they were meant to snipe, also. A thief can already hide, steal, and do considerable melee damage. Enough is enough, IMO.
As far as necro goes, if you’re relying on pets you’re missing a good build; the condition mancer, throw down wells and marks on a group, and theres some major dps, heck try multiple necros in wvw, those marks really add up.
That’s basically an Affliction Warlock… a very fun build.
I think classes/professions should be thought of independently from race. If you start thinking about what an Asura hunter would be like as compared to a Charr hunter or a Human one, then the combinations are endless. For reasons of practicality you have to say a hunter is this… and apply that definition to all races.
People are afraid this will breed a community that subjugates others for not wearing the “right” equipment. I somewhat agree with that, because I’ve seen it happen.
I’ll give you that…
Personally I like to browse other players’ gear when I’m just standing around (like in the city) or if something catches my eye.
I think that culture of telling others what they “need” to have is more of an elitist guild / raiding thing.
Definitely let AMD know… I’ve been waiting for 13.2 to release for the latency fixes, but I’d rather they fix everything in beta since 13.1 is at least stable:
