Ok, flipping around between alts was able to get my stuck character to load back to Diessa Plateau. Would get stuck trying to go back into Plains of Ashford though, so I’m not going that way today it appears.

Interest is completely gone now. Need more content and game mechanics to pull me back in. Great game, but too “small” in depth and things to do. DEs are not worth looking for IMO. Currently playing MoP and will be in Lotro:Rohan expansion next week for quite a long time. Hope when I finish those I can come back to some GW2 awesome newness.

Yes. But it seriously makes me wonder how the game would have done with a subscription fee and tons of content coming our way. Granted they can still prove me wrong, but by this time with Rift, we already had a massive content patch coming past the first month and promises of more every month to 2 months after that. So far all I hear from Arena Net is silence and the occasional but needed bug fix patch.

I don’t agree with all the Nietzsche crap, but I do agree with your conclusion. The game is fantastic but short lived. LONGEVITY is the issue here. I think it’s also the real issue underlying the whole genre right now. Not since FFXI in 2003 have I seen an MMORPG actually have content that could take years to complete. All of them before it did. It seems that little nugget of awesomeness has been forgotten in the wake of casual play, fancy graphics and action-y combat.

I'm curious what everyone thinks.

You know what is really the problem here? I have nothing to play, MMO wise until they release content or an expansion. That’s the real issue. Imagine if a game similar to GW2 was out now for me to hop to while waiting for content in GW2. I can guarantee I wouldn’t be criticizing GW2 as much because I would be busy in a game that is just as good. ;D Not Anet’s fault, I know but you see the issue here? It’s longevity! This game needs a healthy dose of SOMETHING to bring the Longevity score up to par and keep us logging in. I don’t care what it is it just has to be something, be it gear progression or not. It’s not my fault GW2 has one of the fastest leveling games I’ve ever seen(which I’m not knocking, it just needs to be balanced with longevity mechanics at the end of that leveling path).

I always read these posts about wanting more “endgame”, but I fail to see people list actual “endgame” ideas, unless the only MMO Endgame people believe in is a gear grind.

That’s ArenaNet’s job, not ours.

Yet when ANet provided a significant amount of progression in dungeons and crafting, people say they aren’t interested in it.

It would really help to know what people would like to see at level 80 that they view as fun AND that still fits with ANet’s philosophy of low/no gear progression at max level.

You obviously didn’t read the whole thread or my post. I mentioned a ton of options that other MMOs have or put in over time that GW2 could use to make endgame actually exist. Such as Housing, Collections(like EQ2s or Rift’s artifacts) trophies( like EQ2) Titles (like the amount of titles in Lotro), Alternate Advancement models(AoC, rift, EQ2, FFXI etc. all have interesting ways of doing this). Mounts, mini pets(in game! not from the store), collectable card games where you get cards in the game world from all other current game mechanics, more mini games, etc. There are more as we have about 12+ years of MMOs with tons of gaming options other than gear treadmills to pool from.

Now, I know it’s early, and many of these things COULD be put into the game. What we want, is to either see it now OR be told it or something is coming. I’d be very happy with playing what we currently have via alts mostly while waiting on that very content. I’m fine with that. This lack of response as to what is coming is not helping. Give us a road map, even a summary of one or something. Right now all I know that is coming is more of the same. Yawn. I don’t play MMOs for more of the same, I play them because I love to watch them grow and add numerous gameplay mechanic/options over the years. It’s one facet of the genre that no other genre really has.

Also, for a few other posts here, I too find WvW just pointless and utterly unfun. sPVP can be fun, but only in limited quantities. But WvW is all about running around a zone from zerg to zerg hoping to get something done. I just stopped hitting B at all as nothing pulls me to play WvW in it’s current shape. But that’s just my opinion, obviously others like it, I don’t. Yet I want(ed) to. Since it’s the only real way to get that open world feel. It doesn’t give it though.

Again, stop assuming that we mean “gear treadmill” when we say we want more to the current endgame. MMOs are all about progression systems. Most of them do the gear treadmill, yes. I realize GW2 is not that type of game. Great! Stay that way! But saying the current “endgame” here in GW2 is the end all and be all of endgaming is a joke. I don’t feel any reason to log in once I’ve completed the things I found fun in the game which was leveling and exploration. Sadly those have finite endings and there is no more progression for me to look forward to, right now.

I want more progression, but done Anet’s way. What that way is, I don’t know, who does but Anet? They have to realize this game feels like an sRPG with online friends more than a true and tried MMORPG. It’s going to hurt it in the long run if it just stays this way without adding some innovative and Anet style different endgame mechanics. I just hope most of you realize that and would stop with the “you bought the wrong game” attitude you all seem to throw at anyone who mentions not enjoying post 80 gameplay. Gear treadmill isn’t the answer to that anyway, as there already is a gear treadmill. Isn’t that what you get for running dungeons over and over for? Or earning a heap ton of Karma and gold? Yeah, still looks like a gear treadmill to me. That doesnt’ interest me, never has. Other systems to however, in other games in the form of mini games, housing, trophies, alternate advancement systems, or the non level based games, skills you level up over time through usage. Collectables and collectable card games, mini pets, mounts, you name it. These are all different endgame options that aren’t in GW2 at all that I have to come to expect in an MMO. ANYTHING but, just keep doing what you were doing(again, I can’t because leveling and exploration are finite! lol).

Yeah, it has something to do with your personal story home instance. They mentioned somewhere during development that it would change over time with your story and reflect the choices you made. They hinted at it being GW2’s form of housing basically.

I have to agree with the OP and wonder why anyone has a problem with his suggestion. He’s a customer just like everyone else and has certain things he would like to do at endgame. Shunning that because you don’t like that gameplay type is rude and non MMO friendly. MMOs are all about giving multiple types of players multiple things to choose from at all points in it’s lifespan, especially at endgame.

He like me is waiting for the problem of “longevity” to be fixed. This game is fantastic, until you are basically “done” playing which happens very fast on a fully geared 80 that has finished the personal story and world map completion. It leaves one wondering “what do I do now?” and we(I) end up logging in for about half an hour, dilly dallying around with pvp or maybe helping guildies or friends with lower level content, but it’s not satisfying or as engrossing as it was getting that 80 finished.

This is a legitimate gripe and shouldn’t be overlooked just because Anet does things “differently”. Which is fine, but lets do the endgame longevity differently too and not just completely forget it, which is currently the case.

Best and Worst

elocke.7132

I’m not going to only choose 1, that’s just dumb. It’s an MMO, a genre that incorporates sooooo many different aspects, one cannot just choose 1 thing. So:

Best:
1. Music
2. World Design
3. No loot/kill/ninja stealing BS and no stupid tapping rules on mobs.
4. Dye system
5. Linear leveling system

Worst:
1. Dungeons
2. Bugs on events needed for completing the map
3. Lack of true “progression” mechanics at endgame in ANY meaningful form.
4. Lack of any road map of upcoming content(why should I look ahead to patches when there is no info coming to us from Anet?)
5. Lack of a hook to make me want to sPVP more and WvW at all.

What are you Doing now?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

elocke.7132

Reading forums, thinking about other MMOs on the horizon, which are very few, and wondering when I should buy MoP and actually have a sense of “progression” again, if even only for a month since my “progression” in GW2 has come to a screeching halt with a level 80 character all maxed out in professions and story and map completion. Logging in to just PVP is not a reason either, as I can do that in CoD or any other free PVP game. Not that PVP is bad, it’s ok, sPVP is good for a match or 2….but it has no real hook to keep me doing it every day. WvW is a fad and isn’t fun past the first 3 weeks I tried it.

What drives you to login?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Only thing keeping me logging in is my alts. And even those are starting to get boring, since I’ve already seen it all once. Some sPVP matches pull me in too, but I’m starting to lose the drive to play until I see some content patches. 80 mesmer is my main, too.

Anyone else still having a blast?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: elocke.7132

elocke.7132

I’ll be honest here. I do like the game. I’ve got an 80 mesmer and I love pvping with it. I’ve even grown to love my guardian alt. But, I’m not as “into” the game as I was a month ago. Mostly because I’m an explorer at heart and I’ve already unlocked the whole map on one character. It was awesome, but what can I do now that I’ve done what I enjoy the most? So that’s one thing. Second, I really like progression systems and I feel as if my progression on my 80 is done. I’m in exotics, story is done, world is explored, all skills unlocked, trait build set, only thing I can truly progress now with it is sPVP. That’s fun for a few matches but the length of time to rank up is pretty slow and the reward for doing so, pretty minimal.

I just find myself starting to look elsewhere for that sense of immersion and progression that I feel MMOs should have. Granted, it hasn’t been done right in any game since FFXI, but I can’t blame Anet for that. I blame the genre for getting away from creating long lasting content.

I’m hoping Anet with their awesome base game can innovate in the area of longevity now and surprise us all with some incredible updates. Updates that extend the life of the game and MAKE me want to log in and keep playing.

Are MMO players trained to play for progression...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: elocke.7132

elocke.7132

I don’t understand why progression is being touted as a negative here. I only play MMORPGs and sRPGs because of, you guessed it PROGRESSION mechanics. This can entail a lot more than just gear by the way. It entails storyline progression, level progression, zone progression, skill progression and so forth. Take all that away and you have a boring lobby based game with no definitive reason to play. Imagine taking away the Championship games or Superbowl from professional football. Would people still be as interested in watching them? Some might, sure. But those are a rare breed of people. People like competitive progression, hence why we have PVP with ranks. Now whether some are trained to enjoy progression at all costs, even enjoyment of a game, I think they are rare as well and are the type of people who just like to be kept busy no matter the situation. Me? I don’t play a game if I’m not immersed or having fun but I also won’t play the game if I feel my progression has stopped. I have far too many other important things to do than waste time not getting anywhere. I think GW2 is a great game, BUT, if they can’t add more systems of progression to help with longevity, it’s going to become that game that I fire up once every few months and not the true MMO experience I was expecting to enjoy for years on end.

I’ll finish with one final though. FFXI was my very first TRUE mmorpg and it has a TON of progression systems in place. So many in fact, that one could not really do all that is available in the game in just one month let alone 3 or more. But I never felt I had to rush either as there was just so much to do. From fame levels, to leveling for each job, to unlocking the storyline for each nation, then each expansion pack, to doing side quests that unlocked inventory or access to certain areas, to artifact armor quests, to level break quests, chocobo riding quest, sub job quest, the list goes on and on. I want to see this type of progression come back but with today’s graphics, combat mechanics and exploration mechanics, especially with how GW2 does everything. It has the perfect base game to grow from, I truly hope they add to it exponentially and suck up my gaming time for the next decade the way a truely GOOD MMORPG should and yet hasn’t since 2003.

Have you never played FFXI? It’s not like that at all. Hardly awful, if you are playing to “catch up” to other players you need to rethink why you play video games at all, IMO. That is a nice thing about GW2 and FFXI and a few others, not having to worry about being “left behind”, not that I do anyway, but for those like you I suppose, well there ya go, problem solved.

I disagree. I present FFXI as an example of having endless progression on one character. It can be done and games can be great with it. I don’t play sRPGs anymore, they just don’t have that awesome factor that I get from MMOs. Besides, I do like GW2, I just wish it had “more” at endgame to persue, that’s all. Hopefully it will come, but we don’t know for sure as they haven’t given us any sort of roadmap to future content. Once I get that, I can be happy waiting.

Anyone Quit?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

elocke.7132

I haven’t quit, but my eyes have been wandering. Looking forward to MoP, Lotro’s expansion, Rift’s expansion, a few other games, Age of Wushu and so on. I like GW2, but once you hit 80, and hit 100% map completion, my goals have diminished like crazy. I still hop in to do sPVP and maybe get a level or 2 on some alts, but overall, I feel like I’ve seen all I need to see. Dungeons are so so for me. I just don’t like the challenge not being rewarded. The money and loot from in the dungeon itself is pitiful. As well as having to grind 60 times for a full set…I just don’t dungeon grind, never have. I’m always a 1 or 2 run and done player. Difficulty wise…yeah they could be tweaked, but is it even worth it then with such a horrible reward/loot system? I don’t think it is personally.

Much like Lotro, I’m now waiting for updates and for the personal story to have more chapters. Looks like GW2s endgame is it’s major weakness after all. Ah well, it at least joins a growing rank of other games with the same problem.

So I logged in to WoW today to try the Theramore Scenario. I haven’t played WoW in months mind you, just stuck on that annual pass I suckered myself into, that’s another story however. Anyway, I kept trying to cast while moving and double tapping to dodge and I was having a hard time actually fighting in WoW. I also kept trying to find my heal and as a mage realizing I don’t have one, lol. It was very jarring. I would take GW2 combat any day over WoWs. If I could, I would combine GW2 systems with WoW if anything for a more seamless world experience and better dungeons and endgame. But I would also want to see Vistas, and heart quests and map completion. Perhaps we could just take WoW stuff and put it in GW2, like the classes, storyline, seamless open world feel, open world pvp, dungeons galore that are a blast to play. They can keep the 20 and higher raids, but I do enjoy 10 mans. anyway, just dreamin….

You get a giant repair bill for doing the explorable dungeons. You get 2 gifts of exploration for 100%world map completion, those are used for Legendaries which you probably won’t ever see due to the insane skill point/karma grind.

Basically, you can PVP, which is fun in short bursts or roll alts and pray they add something meaningful to the endgame in the next few months. I too love the game, but I’ve hit a standstill on my 80 and the only thing worth doing with it is sPVP, which is a very long grind as well. Dungeons would be fun IF they had better rewards. Running them 60 times for tokens for gear is not very fun and the rewards within the dungeons themselves are just horrible. Blues galore and you end up wasting more money on repairs than earning any in the dungeon itself.

Jumping puzzles have the same problem, get to the chest open it and I get a level 10 blue item and maybe a jewel that I already have 20 of in the bank. Yeah…reward system needs to be redone, me thinks.

My vid card is Radeon HD 7700. I didn’t have these CTDs until the last week, more so after the September 14th patch. Although, I did update the Catalyst profile that was just released before that, the one that specifically makes playing GW2 better or something, not that I had any issues before anyway.

It took me a week to hit cap, easily. Compared to my time in vanilla WoW which was 3 months, Rift 2 months, EQ2 – 3 – 4 months, FFXI – never hit cap lol, hit 55 after 3 months. Lotro, hit cap at about 3 months. This on about a 4 to 6 hours of play per day give or take, depending on what I had going on.

All I did was explore explore explore and do my personal story. I hit maybe 10% of the events in the game as I plan to do them on alts. GW2 is extremely easy to level up in. Which is not really my point here. I don’t mind the speed it took to level to 80. I mind not knowing what the future of the game holds. In those other games, I knew exactly what to shoot for in endgame. This game though, it’s all a bit nebulous and fluffy. Doesn’t really engender longevity just yet. Basically, for MMOs to keep you coming back, progression systems need to be in place. I leave it to ArenaNet to make new systems to suit their game. Not the same grind dungeons/events to get cosmetic gear that they currently have as endgame.

Yeah, I think a nice little roadmap as to what is coming for the game would help alleviate this, what should I do at 80?, question. Currently I’m just playing alts for the most part as now that I hit 80 and my map completion is at 99%(stupid Malchor’s Leap bug!!!) I only hop on it now and then for sPVP, otherwise, I’m not really interested in “grinding” dungeons over and over or events for karma to get gear that only changes my appearance. My main playstyle is exploration and sadly, that is limited to how much you can explore. Adding housing and collectables(such as Rift’s artifacts or EQ2s collectables) and other mini games would help with this. As well as more pvp modes.

Love sPVP but WvW doesn’t really do anything for me as I spend half my time just running to a spot where the zerg is and that get’s old real fast. The running and the zerg fighting. Anyway, love the game, but want to know what’s coming and if I’m just wasting my time if it’s just going to be more of the same. MMOs need to grow and add new things to do over time to keep people playing, especially in a game where the cap is hit so fast.

Ever since this latest patch, I’ve had to reinstall due to crashes making me unable to play the game past character select. After reinstalling, I’ve had random crashes and 2 BSODs. No discernable pattern that I can see. All drivers are up to date, computer is 2 months old, bought specifically to play GW2. Never had any issues prior to this latest patch. No overheating going on and no issues with RAM or hard drive.

Would also like to note, that in game issues have come out of nowhere as well such as sound cutting out, dialog voice overs not always playing in cutscenes, broken Skill Challenges and Events that a week ago were working fine. Me thinks someone pulled or changed a small piece of code somewhere and it’s created a domino effect. Hope they can find it and fix it, otherwise I won’t be able to play this game if it keeps shutting my PC down.
