Are people seriously buying the keys? Why buy the keys for a 99% chance to get some useless junk like ooze tonics rather than buying what you actually are hoping to get from the chests?
Why do you assume the delay has anything to do with figuring out who should get it?
Having a list of eligible players is one thing.
Creating the actual reward that can be mailed out to each eligible player, testing it, and then actually sending them out is another. There is a bit of development and QA effort in the 2nd part. I think it is fair to say the 2nd part is a lot more work.
They have extremely detailed logs. They know exactly who participated and who didn’t get a chest. I don’t know why people are assuming they don’t have a clue and will have to send it out to everybody (maybe some wishful thinking there?) I would be very surprised if they just sent something to everybody regardless of whether they already got the chest or blew off the event entirely. I don’t see them discriminating against people who participated in the overflows either. What would be the point?
Since they sent out the “early next week” message last week I would say they have already missed their own deadline there. An update would be nice.
As for the troll, everything in the game is a “virtual item” so the fact that they are not physical items hardly makes them trivial. People play the game to get virtual items. People even trade real cash for gems to get virtual items.
Also I am pretty sure they doing all their logging to a real DBMS not some huge text file somewhere, so it is a matter of writing and executing one or a handful of queries to determine who matches whatever criteria they come up with.
I transmuted my L80 exotic hat with my character’s starter hat that had no stats on it. I don’t think that kind of thing is all that uncommon. There are definitely exotic sets out there where I would have to transmute every piece cause I hate the look. Otherwise as someone else mentioned a second MF set is also a possibility. I think it is extremely unlikely that someone farmed up a legendary without getting exotics.
I got the same message. It remains to be seen what it will be and if it will be limited to people who did the event but didn’t get any reward, but the wording does not sound very promising. They could send out a minipet to every character in the game and call it even and that wouldn’t contradict the email at all.
So where exactly in Southsun Cove is this rich node that is ruining the game? I would like to test out the theory myself.
I would guess it wouldn’t matter what time you did it. They will go based on who participated in the event. Regardless of what server you were on. So if you got in enough hits on stuff to get credit I would expect to get something. Now what will the compensation be is the question. I am not so sure it will be the exact same thing everyone else got (chance at precursor etc).
The reinforcements parts were maybe a bit long but it really wasn’t bad if it all worked as intended given the rewards that were supposed to be offered at the end. If it was purely for fun without any reward of any kind? Yea then I would say it was way too long.
If half the players got precursors they would not be worth anything in the TP. It is not like everybody would even want to buy a precursor off there because there is a ton more that goes into building the legendary. They were not that common of a drop. Maybe 5%.
Also nobody made 500g off it. 100g? Sure. 500g? No. The prices dropped through the floor as soon as the event was over. And very few people got more than one precursor. At most if they were very lucky and did the event a few times on overflows they might have had 2. Any more than that I don’t believe.
They should be able to figure out who participated easily enough. Or at least the people who spent time in the zone if nothing else. Not sure someone questing on the other side of the world really needs the event chest.
Everything you do in the game is logged. So I don’t see how this presents a problem.
A lot of people didn’t even get to loot the chest at all. I would be happy with some level 78 exotics at this point. An underwater precursor would be awesome. And you should totally craft it. You might be the only one on the server with one. Also… nobody got 4. Maybe a few people managed to get 2. Most people got 0.
just had an idea what the compensation should be. everyone who couldnt get the chest should be mailed a box that they can open that has the same loot table as the chest in the event, the box will be account bound of course
I wonder if it’s actually possible for Anet to make a proper difference between
- characters who already did the event completely + reward
- characters who already did the event but got no reward
- characters who got disconnected w/o reward
- characters who just quit due to annoying lags w/o reward
- characters who didn’t attend to the event at all
- characters who were in the area, but didn’t participateetc etc.
Just in case they can’t, what would be the most obvious solution? Do it like on Halloween, give the stuff out to everyone again. But then people will still be angry over other players who already got the initial reward and will get another one now.
Wooo, fun times ahead
Well they certainly know who already looted cause their characters have been flagged to prevent them from looting it again. And they should know who participated. At the very least they would know if anyone got completion on any of the phases.
I’m gonna go with no. Why should Anet schedule events around everyone? If you got tickets to a free concert and you can’t make it because of your schedule, would you complain about not getting to see it?
And I have no idea how fail your group was but the event ended for me by 2:30 PST. And they never said it was a “1 hour Event.” If you actually READ the post, it’s a “Multi Hour Event.” Multi generally means 2+ hours.
And lastly, you made your choice over doing something IRL or playing the game. Everything has an opportunity cost. You made your choice.
Except it’s not a free concert.
Except it is a free concert. You paid for the game content that was released on August. You are not paying a monthly subscription. You didn’t even know this event would happen when the game came out.
If we were all paying a monthly then yeah, I’d think it’d be appropriate to help those who had problems with the game. This however is FREE content. Think of it as free DLC that so many other games love to charge you for.
No, it’s not a free concert. For you maybe, it is.
Some people support this game in ways other than subscriptions. I know I do. That and promoting the game, spreading word, getting others to start playing, etc.
Did you not buy something with those gems? Did you not get the extra bag/bank slots or the Halloween costumes or the Black Lion Keys? If so then you got exactly what you paid for. Don’t think just cuz you buy gems means you are a paying customer. You pay no subscription. You didn’t buy an expansion for this weekend or anything.
That is a pretty bogus argument. You could make the very same argument even for subscription based MMOs. The only thing your $15 a month in a sub based MMO guarantees you is continued access to the servers (whenever they happen to be up). Not content. They will continue to draw money even if they aren’t releasing a patch that month, or have no plans to release a patch ever again. So hey, if the content doesn’t work you have no right to complain. It’s like a free concert!
Cept you’re paying $15 a month PLUS the initial purchase of the game as opposed to what we did with ANet. We just paid a flat fee. Any extra purchase was on you.
And unfortunately that’s not how the business model works. No one would pay $15 a month for MMOs without constant content releases. If people did, you’d see a lot more subscription based games.
Yea nobody is going to be buying gems and expansions for a game that doesn’t do any content releases either. So what is your point? In neither case are you directly paying for content. But in either case they better release content on a regular basis if they want to continue to make any money off the game. Otherwise people will lose interest and stop playing. Then they won’t get any money no matter which model they are using. The model has nothing to do with it. Either way people have a right to complain about broken content.
No one buys gems for content releases. You buy gems for the cool things from the Gem Shop. There’s a difference. I haven’t had to spend gems on a content release. Did you pay gems for this weekend event? Where was this? I never had to do it.
It also seems rather weird to pay the price of a single player game and demand regular updates and working content and catering for a subscription based game.
Yea you don’t pay subscription fees for content either. All you are guaranteed is continued access to the game. They release what content they want, when they want. Your $15 has nothing to do with that. You aren’t directly buying the content in either case. So it is a stupid argument.
In the end none of these companies are developing new content just because they want to be nice guys. It is about retaining customers so they buy gems or continue to pay their subscription fee or whatever. So everybody has a right to complain if it doesn’t work. It is not a gift.
I really thought there was going to be a crash to desktop at the end of the video.
I lost money on the event cause I got no chest, but on the bright side those that did get the chest flooded the TP with gear I have been saving for which slashed the prices by about 1/2-2/3 overnight.
They should have had bracketed times, AND POST THEM, for 24 hours so groups would be able to get filled. I got into some of the latter ones and their were almost too few doing them.
Anet’s biggest problem is a lack of communication during events like this. People NEED time tables so they can schedule and please for love of god post estimated times of completion. The Ancient Karka event took way too long and it ran into IRL schedules. If you can’t give a rough estimate of when an event will be completed then you didn’t test it enough and thus it shouldn’t be put in live servers. Make a program that runs the event with the maximum amount of players before releasing it.
I 100% agree….people need times for the REAL LIVES….and there needs to be MANY events Occurring over and over for the maximum benefit to all players….and 1 TIME time chest deal….you get that thing 1 time your done….let those of us who haven’t gotten it have our chance. During my 1st attempt at noon PST….it was 4pm by the time the next part of the event was starting and I had to leave to do something important….I had no clue i would be sitting in game playing for that long for a in quote “1 hour Event” my RL kicked in and i realized I couldn’t believe i had been at this for 3 hours already…..
VERY frustrating

Even if 35% (wherever that number came from) had client side problems it is still fail design on anet’s part for that to even matter. You design this stuff knowing loads of people will crash and disconnect. It happens all the time. You can design around it. It doesn’t have to prevent them from resuming where they left off. Or getting the rewards they earned. They apparently didn’t care at all about that cause they didn’t address those situations. Then you add all the server problems on top of that and yea people are not gonna be happy.

Well I know everybody on the shard I was on crashed to desktop at the same time because I was on vent with more than a dozen of them at the time. So not like it is all a client side hardware issue, or a connection issue, or anything other than some kind of fail on their end.
It’s all about the highest concurrency in the US
I know they said that but I don’t believe it for a second. Since when is noon prime time? Ever play a game where the longest queues were at noon PST? I can’t say that I have. More like they asked the magic 8 ball if noon was a good time and it said “signs point to yes.”
Hundreds pissed at ANet at the moment.
Not a very good time to post this buddy.
Anyway, congrats with the Spark.Hundreds? More like thousands.
have some data to support this?
Well considering the thread about getting DCed before the chest has almost 1000 posts in it I don’t think this is much of a leap. I’m guessing everybody on my overflow when everyone simultaneously crashed near the end was not very happy. And everybody on the next overflow when the server was taken down for the patch was probably not very happy. The vast majority of those people aren’t even posting here. So yea, I think thousands is a fair estimate.
Thanks to the folks that got people into overflows, though. They were great.
Well they do need to let people participate multiple times for some kind of lesser reward or something on subsequent attempts or you probably won’t have enough people around to do it that last time. Also once every 3 would be better and there’s no reason really to limit it to 24 hours. Why not 48? Or start it Friday and run it till Monday?
Even for PST the timing was not great. I have a hard time believing the servers are at max capacity at noon as opposed to, you know, prime time. Course I wasted hours killing crabs and got nothing other than repair bills cause of crashes and disconnects and then that patch so I guess I would have preferred it was at an even less convenient time for me and I could have avoided all that.
Maybe they meant that content was only removed, not changed. LOL.
Not sure that it is the communication is the problem. It is the event design. Don’t have 3 hour events with the reward at the end when if ANYTHING happens (DC, crash, etc) the player who is there for hours killing crabs gets nothing while presumably some guy who showed up 5 or 10 minutes before the final boss goes down gets a huge sack of loot. That is bad design. If you want an epic event it needs to be broken into a bunch of stages with rewards at each stage. 3 hours is way too long for a single stage.
I don’t know if I even want it repeated. I’d probably just kill crabs again for hours and hours and the game will crash at the end just like it did today. The reward was only the repair bills.
Physical distance doesn’t have a whole lot to do with latency. Some guy living in the same city the servers are located in might very well have worse latency than someone connecting from halfway around the world.
And MMOs are written with latency in mind anyway. That’s why they have features like allowing you to queue commands.
I fight invisible enemies all the time in WvW and 99% of the time there is no mesmer portal involved. Unless they walk up then stand around for 60 seconds and wait to render before attacking there will be invisible enemies. The solution if you can’t deal with it is to run with smaller groups. The mesmer portal has nothing to do with it.
I’m quite sure Anet is being cautious of the economy; they’ve made several posts stating how they keep a close eye on it. They do not want to foster economies that would be off-putting to new players. Imagine joining only to realize that everything on the AH was 50x more expensive (not much fun); this is what happens if inflation gets out of control. New players are very limited in the resources they acquire, and such a scenario is not fun for new players. Sure, inflation happens, but it does not mean it should not be actively countered.
If everything was 50x as expensive on the AH copper ore would be going for 10g a piece. So they they can sell some copper ore (or jute or onions or whatever else they find as a newbie) on the AH for 50x as much. It balances out. And it is not like it is hard to sell stuff on the AH in this game. They make it as easy as possible. So what is the problem exactly?
Inflation is always used as an excuse for pointless gold costs. Like the trait books, repair costs, teleport costs, blueprint/upgrade costs etc. Inflation happens inevitably with or without the money sinks. And inflation in a game is just fine. It is not like grandma’s retirement savings are getting eaten up by in-game inflation and she will end up on the streets as a result.
Once they start charging for transfers it will solve the problem. People aren’t gonna blow that much cash or gold on gems to perform unnecessary repairs to walls on an enemy server for a day then transfer back. The problem is not the supply system. It is that WvW and free unlimited transfers are not really compatible.
The real problem here is invisible enemies. Give their algorithms time to match servers properly.

The rendering of nameplates by themselves is a really good idea actually. That should allow you to see and target enemies in real time or close to it without the massive lag involved in loading a potentially huge number of character models all at once. If the character models don’t show up for 30 seconds it isn’t ideal but being able to see and target them in that 30 seconds is a huge improvement.
So what you are saying is that you got killed in WvW?
p.s. Dying in WvW should ALWAYS give repair cost .. I saw bunch of players that rather do suicide jumping from cliff’s when being chased just to avoid repair cost
Or better yet, NEVER give repair cost in WvW. Then there wouldn’t be any reason to jump off a cliff either. It is not like it is needed as a disincentive to dying there is plenty of that already in WvW. When I die I am thinking more about losing the objective and having to respawn and run across the whole map again more than the repair costs.
The jumping puzzle shouldn’t be in there either. Why a jumping puzzle and other distractions in there when there are people waiting in the queue for 2 hours who actually want to help capture and defend objectives?
I am under the assumption those gold costs were put in there for one reason. To sell gems. They probably thought people were going to buy gems to convert them into coin to pay for their WvW. But at the current exchange rate nobody is going to.
Gold costs have no business in WvW. The guy with more gold to burn should not have any advantage.
Yea I think having to loot in PvP is kind of a bad design choice. At least the loot drops at your feet. But still you shouldn’t have to look for loot bags and loot during PvP. It should show up automatically in your inventory.
You might also be able to rez people to get them inside the keep using the elementalist glyph. If you cast it while attuned to air it rezes them at your location. Not sure if it works over anything but flat ground though (the elementalist teleport doesn’t). I have not tried it. Wouldn’t be very effective at getting a whole zerg in obviously because of cooldown… but could be useful if it works.
I don’t agree that objectives should be able to defend themselves for any length of time. Nothing would change hands if it were that hard to take things. That would make the game incredibly boring.
The only issue I see is this:
Siege in general is far too cheap in terms of supplies for how powerful it is. Any supplies funneled into upgrades like oil or cannons would be far better off put towards siege. You can put up 7 arrow carts for what it costs to build cannons. It isn’t a tough decision between those two. The cannons will be the first thing gone if anyone comes along to attack. The arrow carts can be placed so that they are unreachable to anything but siege. And even if you lose siege they are cheap enough it doesn’t even matter. You can have a new one built in less than 10 seconds. All the siege prices (in terms of supply) probably have to be tripled at least.
