Where's the Challenge? Like old times...

i often hear this argument about todays games being way too easy and what not, and i kinda agree with it, but only to a certain point. you see, when i was a kid there were tons of challenging and hard games, like oddworld abes oddysee for example, i cant count the hours spent to finish the game, all the frustration and fun – that was like 12? years ago, i was about 10 back then. now to the point, i installed that same game a year ago, im 22 now, and i finished it in couple of hours without any trouble. the same exact game that was a pain in the kitten when i was a kid, was now a piece of cake.

and the point is, that even though we remember games being hard in the past, it might have something to do with the fact that we were just kids.

besides that, english isnt my first language so back then when i was a kid i didnt know it, so i had no frikin idea whats going on in the game or what am i supposed to do or how. this language barrier also made the game a lot harder than it shouldve been. and i guess its safe to assume that i wasnt the only one having this issue.

my 2cents about what you should consider before saying games were more difficult when you were a kid.

Level cap increase past 80? Y/N

yes. im already killing stuff over and over again, might aswell get some lvls for it. also this doesnt exclude the option of having max item level set to 80 forever or not getting stats and trait points for any level past 80, so i dont realy understand whats the fuss about.

No healers, no tanks. Don’t ask for stuff that would ruin the game.

"No Mounts" Mindset related to GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

kaboo.5194

Its a moot point – the game (zone size and density, travel mechanics, economy etc) was designed to not have mounts. Adding them in any form other than purely cosmetic would require either a massive amount of work or would break the game completely. Its not even a remote possibility.

could someone please explain how would constant ~50% move speed buff (out of combat only) break the whole game?

Would you reccommend GW2 to a friend?

i dont know, the game is lacking something. its a great game, i had a lot of fun the first month but after that i couldnt and still cant play the game. anytime i start it i look at the char screen for a while, then login, rotate camera a few minutes and i close the game. and i have no idea why, i didnt even finish anything (~60% map, 61 pve lvl, 8-10 pvp lvl). i believe its great game and sometimes i really want to play it, but the feeling fades as soon as i start it. but it might be just me, so i guess i would recommend it – its still just one time 60$ for a game with ongoing development/improvement.

not enough content – “omg there is nothing to do after a month of playing”
new content – “omg i have to gring, wtf?”

i guess, you can never please everyone. besides that, i never understood what does grind even mean… just think about why you play guildwars. pvp? theres no grind in spvp and wvwvw it doesnt matter what equip you have. pve? well, when you consider that pve is basically killing mobs in different places and running dungeons, then you have only two options to increase this content. first is to make infinite size world and infinite number of dungeons, which is pretty much impossible. wait, youre saying that 20 dungeons would be enough? yes, maybe it will suffice for 3months instead of one, but then youd be done with them and got nothing to do again. the second option is to give you a purpose to repeat the content you already have. and so you have ascended gear you can “grind” for.

to me it looks like items you have to “grind” for are items you know you cant get in as short time as you would want to. and thats just silly. you expect mmo to be some life long adventure but it is not. mmo is usualy just a rpg game you play with more people. so, what do you do in rpg game when you kill the final boss? thats right, nothing, you turn it off and move to something else. some of you might replay the game, or “grind” some better items, increase the difficulty, try to complete it by playing with one hand only, etc… and the same things can you do in mmos after youve completed them, or when you reach the “end game”. thats another term i hate. there is nothing after the end, and thats why its called the end. only way to keep playing is replaying what was before the end.

all this QQ about “grind” and not enough “end game” content is complete nonsense. and they even conflict with each other.

that would be actualy really awesome. and while they are at it, i would also love to see more weapon choices in pve – like all classes could use all weapons, it could work like the conjured or enviromental weapons, so the classes that specialize in said weapon – can currently use it – have specialized skills for the weapon, while others have just some general skills that are the same for all classes that dont specialize on that weapon.

waypoint prices

in Suggestions

kaboo.5194

this isnt about too high waypoint prices. this suggestion is just about convenience.

so to start lets imagine youre in lions arch and want to go to the black citadel.
- your first option and cheapest one is to teleport to asura gates for 0 and then use asura gate to black citadel and then teleport wherever you wanted to be in BC for another 0.
- your second option would be using direct waypoint which costs a lot of coin, when compared to 0. and also this price will be different for each waypoint in BC. this right here brings up two questions:
1. why is the waypoint price for going from town to town higher than 0 when you can use the asura gates which are for 0. yes there is 1 more loading when you go from divinty reach to BC for example, but it doesnt make any sense to charge coin for saving one loading. and even less sense, if thats possible, when you are in lions arch, there are no loadings saved, i gain nothing by using waypoint from lions arch to BC, the 10seconds of using two waypoints in the cities are hardly worth 1,5silver.
2. why is the price different for waypoints in cities when, once youre inside, you can teleport for free? once again it makes no sense to charge additional coin for sparing me of the 5seconds of city travel…

so my suggestions are:
1. waypoint prices from town to town should be drastically reduced, im not saying 0, because it still spares me from 5 mouse clicks, but reduced, drastically, to max 50copper at lvl80. anything higher than that is just not worth it.
2. waypoint prices should be equalized for all waypoints inside a town. that means the price from ashford forum should be the same whether i want to go to the heros waypoint or ruins of rin.

okay, now imagine you want to go from plains of ashford to metrica province:
- first option, again the cheapest is to teleport to the starting waypoint, then go inside BC, then teleport to BC asura gate, lions arch, rata sum, leave rata sum and teleport wherever you want in metrica province. thats hell a lot of loadings, because of that i just teleport straigth to the BC asura gate, use it and go wherever i want to from rata sum asura gate.
- second option is again the straigth waypoint but that costs way more than you can make in the 5minutes(max) that takes you the first option

this inconvenience could be easily removed:
3. with the previous suggestions in mind, the price to distant waypoints should be calculated as the price from current location to nearest asura gate + price from target location to nearest asura gate of that location + small fee(30copper at lvl80) for less loadings.

just a side note, less annoying than the previous points but still annoying and preventing me from using the waypoints more often than enter, leave zone and respawn, is the fact that teleporting to waypoint that is at the top of my head costs 75 copper(at lvl 55 i think), i know its the same for a waypoint that is a minute worth of walk but still, only in exceptional situations do i make >75copper a minute and thus its really not worth it.

4. this just popped in my mind, but the fixed price on waypoints in an area could be reduced once you have 100% in that area. after 100% because im sure you want people to enjoy the world and explore everything – could be another motive to complete the area.

this rant makes it sound like you just wanted the bonuses but you also state they are just a joke. and that makes me really confused, because how does the fact that dde can be bought for gems which can be bought for gold affect your desire to help? you wanted to help and you did.

if you said you wanted the bonuses and didnt know they can be bought for gold i would agree with you. but as it stands now you just sound stupid. i dont mean to insult you, but think about what i said for a moment and youll find your post stupid aswell
(and maybe youll be even glad that you helped them by buying dde with money instead of gold)

Oh my god.
What is with all you players out there saying this patch fixed an “abuse” or “exploit”
NO ONE likes running a dungeon and having to spend 2-7 silver ON REPAIRS and then end up getting 80 COPPER – 1 SILVER for a reward!!
You just spent 1hr in a dungeon and instead of getting loot, you lost money.
What game have you EVER played where it was like this?!

what if i told you that dungeons werent made to farm gold, but rather a challenge you have to spend gold on? the reason might be that anet wants you to do more than just dungeon runs and imo its a good aproach. and if youre going to argue with how expensive is the dungeon set, isnt it just a visualy different from the top armor?
if it is, then it kinda sounds like optional choice for better looks and optional means you dont have to get it, and that means you want it, and if you want it you have to do dungeons, for which you need gold and that you have to get somewhere else.
sounds like a good way to keep you busy for quite a while. and since we dont pay any subscription i really cant say a single bad thing about it.

Terribly disappointed in this game overall

its pretty hard to take seriously someone who cant find the edit post button. this wasnt meant to be a personal attack, but there realy is a edit post button under each of your posts, you also can enter instances (personal story quests) with your friends – you just have to be in a group together – you can also freely enter instanced zones of cities anytime (this means you can collect all points of interest without doing the quests), some skill challenges get bugged but you can report them and theyll be fixed, or you can try talking to the challenge npc/object and you may get lucky and the challenge will reset (transfering to other world because of this is the most drastic solution in my opinion, and very unnecessary).

and about dynamic events not affecting the world: yes they are repeating but most of them have different phases and that is the impact you make, for example: escort npc to a place – npc sets up a camp there – they send bombers to bomb some statues around – enemies siege the camp. this is the best attempt at your deeds affecting how the world looks and to be honest im very satisfied with it and its pretty hard for me to imagine how better it couldve been done. ofcourse you could have each event as a neverending campaign, but we are hardly going to see a game with unlimited amount of content anytime soon. you can take DEs as mini stories, that will ofcourse repeat because as a you know, everyone wants to play through them.

My honest thoughts on Guild Wars 2 so far.

1. you dont have to grind to get to lvl 80.

2. endgame – i still dont know what this word means. do you people expect to get to lvl 80 and then have what? 5000 dungeons so it doesnt get boring? 1000 lvl80 areas so you dont have to stay in one place? you say less is enough? i say less is too few because 200 areas youll finish in 2months and then cry for more endgame(that basically means that any amount of content is not enough in the big picture). i dont know why nobody can understand that if you dont want to play pvp then all mmos are the same as one single player campaign, just its multiplayer. the campaign ends once you get max lvl and explore everything, and thats game end. that means the game ends there and theres nothing more to do, except of you know, repeating stuff youve already completed, but thats something you dont like and call it grind. why do you even play mmo if all you want to achieve is to kill some lame AI and run around with your shiny sword? its good that mmos offer some pve content where you can learn the game and play through the story, but they are mainly about players competing with each other in either some arenas or in the open world sieges or so. and if you realy dont want to do pvp, then go and replay every single area in the game, im sure youll find there events you didnt find when you were there the last time. or start a new char and take a look at the main story from a different point of view, or go help other people. but i know i wont be doing any of this, because once i get to the end, pvp is the only way to go.

3. combat is different from any other game, so its more like you dont know how to play melee yet. and the same applies to dungeons, since combat is pretty new youre just not good enough.

4. crafting – i didnt have any issues so far, it seems pretty easy to learn and i realy dont see any way how anyone could be a better or worse crafter than someone else.

right click party/guild member and select send mail – this creates new mail with your buddy as preset recipient. this should help with the incovenience of typing out the name. i personaly dont see any reason for direct trade with anyone else than friends since theres black lion trading company for selling stuff.

that doesnt mean im against /trade, all i want to say is that you already have tools for trade, and implementing more just because they look different would be kinda useless.

@prevent scam: what scam? are your friends scamming you or are you mailing items to people you dont know? if the later then why the hell would you do that? use the black lion instead.

but if you look at the book skills from other angle then theyll be your 3rd weapon set that is super stronk and because of that you can use them only once in a while, what means you have to time the switch pretty well.

and archon is awesome, try activating it on the very first boss in act 4 and youll down the second boss while its still active.

the game is bad because you dont know your skills and get roflstomped? i dont understand how you couldve posted this thread, but you can watch/read some guides, read your skills, learn how to move in combat and dodge in pve and you know, play the game and youll learn it, theres no other solution.

How are Dungeons meant to be played?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: kaboo.5194

kaboo.5194

im quite new to the game and didnt get to the dungeons yet, but i think its safe to assume that you are having a difficult time in dungeon because you dont know the game yet – and/or you are used to how are other games played and youre trying to trying to apply rules from them here, and you fail.

then there is teamwork which just cant be achieved in perfect form with people you just met. you dont know their builds, you dont know what items they have, you dont know how they play, and they dont know anything about you. maybe spending some time and talking about these things before you start doing anything will help.

combo fields, boons and conditions arent there just for fun but should be utilized. for example use your damage skills when you have maximum might possible, fury, the enemy is vulnerable and theres a combo field available.

melee mobs can be easily kited even with melee weapon, caster and healers seem to be very powerful and archers are very annoying, especialy because i cant get used to the fact that missiles cant be dodged without actualy using dodge while melee attacks can.

to recap, gw2 is a new game with different rules than other mmos, not having a tank and a healer means that everyone has to take care about himself and thus skill level of every member of the group (including you) is important. knowing the strenghts and weaknesses of your group members (and their classes) is also important. learn the game, learn about the boons, conditions, combo fields, combo finishers and utilize them in fights. and at last, be patient and give your group all the information you have that can help you with moving towards the end.

and as a last note, if arenanet decides that the dungeons are realy hard for new and/or casual players, then i hope they wont go the usual way of nerfing them, but rahter create new easier content for those people, or add a new easy mode to the existing content. afterall, mmos dont have to be just stories about immortal heroes saving the world, they can also provide challenging content where you have to learn how to complete it the hard way.

Two suggestions

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: kaboo.5194

kaboo.5194

hi, im sorry if this is not the appropriate forum for suggestions but i didnt find any better so here it goes:

1. when the game updates youre shown % completed, but this number shows % of files downloaded instead of % of the total size downloaded. and the result is that i get 95% completed in 5seconds and the last 5% take another few minutes. i personaly dont care about how many files am i downloading but about their size. afterall, whats good for knowing that i downloaded 1000 files of 1010 when the first 1000 are each of 10kb and the last ten are each 10mb.

2. i noticed that teleporting in cities is free, but lets imagine that youre outside the city on the east side. and when you want to teleport inside the city it will cost you more to go to its western side than its eastern side. and that results in teleporting to the eastern side and then to western for free. so could we please have unified teleport prices for cities?

both of these suggestions are just small changes, but they are the little details that can make the game even better than it is.
