Unfortunately, mine has always been off, but I do experience the issues.

I’ll try everything I can think of next time it happens, provided it doesn’t happen in the middle of a PvP match again (sigh) or something similar.

Thank you for your continued investigations. All the other issues are mere annoyances compared to this one!

Jon, small keyboard update for you:

I’ve noticed that in addition to the keyboard just suddenly not working, sometimes inputs will get “stuck” as if I’ve held a key down. Generally this will continue until I press and hold that key down again for a moment, and only seems to happen for keys I hold down (I.e. WASD). May or may not be related (and I verified that accessibility settings like sticky keys are disabled. Wired keyboard )

Sorry, I misspoke, I should have said, “the next patch with fractal and sanctuary updates”. It is coming very soon, apologies.

Is this also the patch that will give the sanctuary the ability to put us back to where we started/used the pass?

Yes.

Can we get the same QoL on the other passes?

At this point, no. It is actually not possible to do this in lounges that are in open world maps because of how we export character position on map transition.

You should be able to do it for Noble’s Folly though, right? Since it’s an instance, not open world?

For those having the keyboard problem, is it keyboard layout related.. i.e. is the game switching layouts on your or some other behavior?

It seems to be only the 0-9a-z keys. Function keys, delete, etc still work when this happens.

So, quick data point: When the keyboard stopped working again, it didn’t stop working completely – I was actually typing a message at the time, and couldn’t type or hit enter, but I could backspace, so it wasn’t a total loss of keyboard function.

Mac OS Native (64-Bit) client users:

Assuming you installed to the default location, the following should work for you as a workaround:

Open Terminal (Launchpad → Other → Terminal), and enter the following at the prompt:

/Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2\ 64-bit.app/Contents/MacOS/GuildWars2 -authsrv 54.89.152.137 -assetsrv 64.25.41.2

That should get you going.

I don’t know how many OSX users there are (probably more than you think, since they’re probably on Boot Camp!), but it is so wonderful not to have to boot into Windows and lose all my Mac features just to play Guild Wars 2.

I’m sure it was a hard slog, and it’s a testament to how much you care about this game to spend the resources you have to create this client. You have both my respect, and my sincere gratitude for this work!

Feedback so far:
Firstly, this is on a Maxed 2012 iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)
3.4 Ghz Core i7
24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
- It used the downloaded assets from the 32 bit client! Awesome!
- Test settings: Everything set to “High” except shadows, Character Model Quality set to Highest, use Hi-Res textures on (yay!), Native rendering
- Zoning is slow. Slow slow slow. Took four minutes to load my character in from character select, and about 45 seconds to move to a different waypoint.
- Sound is delayed about 5 seconds from when my character acts.
- Particle effects are delayed about the same amount.
- Game is running 30fps in Ember Bay though, possibly vsync limited even though I don’t have that selected.
- actual gameplay is fine, other than the particle effects and sound – combat actions happen on time.
- Anything interface-y was initially slow (for example, guild treasury was ~15 seconds) but loads more quickly after caching
- Sound is amazing! I can’t explain it, but it sounds more “spacious” (as if my speakers were placed further apart), stark difference from the 32 bit client.

LOD switching is definitely causing lag – when the texture map changes (because I get closer to an object), there’s a definite stutter as the game changes textures. Also, when I first load into an area, I need to spin around a few times to, presumably, load the textures into memory before movement is smooth.

Interesting, spinning around in Ember Bay at the Lava Lounge, I occasionally se a static “ghost” of the buildings – maybe like a shadow map or something? – that doesn’t move as I rotate.

Yep, you got it in one – what’s important isn’t the contents of this update, but what it’s called. Yep, you’d be singing the praises of this release if it had been called a “June competitive update” but the devs deciding to have the disrespect to you and the other pedants on this forum of calling it a “feature pack?” Yep. And, by the way, I’ve seen a lot of folks saying “you can just turn off the other tags.” Uh, no. It’s really important to see the other, guilded, organized groups on a map. That is not a solution to a problem that should never exist in the first place.

Important for commanders, not so much for everyone else.

Also, on this subject of tags, I often run tagless. I know other commanders and guilds that almost never run a tag. This is for a good reason. I just don’t feel like getting a lot of people following me. Some guilds don’t want any pugs, and run privately. I just want to play with a small group. I also don’t want to take pugs off the other tag. There’s also the spying issues.

Your play style is good for YOU, not for new players who can’t find someone to run with. You want to run tagless? Go ahead. Want instead to run with a tag, attract pugs or newbies and mentor them a bit, possibly creating new WvW players? Awesome! Here’s a bonus to your rewards for your efforts.

MMOs that don’t think about attracting new players eventually die because the existing player base continually shrinks from natural attrition. You must ensure new players enter the world, and stay there, at least at the rate that players leave. This also applies to game modes. You make it easier for players to experience and be rewarded by WvW, as well as easier to find a tag to run with, and you drastically increase the chance that those users will become long term WvWers.

This is a well thought out change and is a great way to bring new blood to the game mode, while rewarding veterans with higher world ranks as well.

Mac OS case sensitive file system (solution)

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

orenwolf.1953

It’s worth noting that the main platform for GW2 is case-insensitive, and macOS case-sensitive filesystems are … well, “poorly supported” is probably the understatement of the decade.

I’d strongly encourage you to simply abandon efforts to use them at all, and accept that macOS is also a case-insensitive file system.

Absolutely this. GW2 isn’t the only software you’re going to have serious issues with on the mac with a case sensitive filesystem.

I’d rethink your plans to avoid a LOT of headache down the road. If you need case-sensitivity for a specific purpose, then I strongly recommend creating an additional case sensitive FS and mounting it where you need that functionality.

GW2 compared to other MMOs..

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: orenwolf.1953

orenwolf.1953

I have to agree. GW2 (PvE) is well designed to enable, for the first time for me, not make you go “oh crap” when others are near you – there are no contested resources or mobs, so folks fighting at your side are welcome.

The lack of focus on gear grind or maxxing level to play specific content (I’m talking vs other games that require you to be a certain level to access an expansion or whatnot), or having a specific, new gear to be able to play in certain areas, is a welcome one.

On top of that, nearly everything in-game is accessible to ALL players, not just raiders. Especially story! That’s a huge change, and as someone who has always cared a great deal about MMO storylines, a welcome one.

Lastly, mad props must be given for an economy stable enough that you can leave the game for a year or more and return still having valuable goods and a reasonable wealth! Name another game where this is true!

Please fix the bell choir

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: orenwolf.1953

orenwolf.1953

I’ve been playing a lot of Bell Choir lately. (Love it!) I have worked around the problems you mention by leaving the instance and rejoining if I get the error message. (I get it quite rarely, actually.) I think the situation where you are joining during the free-play is coincidental — I don’t think that is an issue. Free play, after all, runs longer than any particular song phrase, right? If that is true — and it seems true to me — then it would be sort of mathematically probable that you might hit that longer session more often.

Please also remember that if you get a message about the world being full when you try to enter the instance, you should try again right away. I’ve never had to try more than twice to get into the Bell Choir in that manner. (Sometimes I go through the gate, sometimes I accept through the NPC — either will work.)

We’re sorry for the occasional issues that arise, but I hope that the suggestions above will be helpful to you. See you on that magical, musical circle!

Gaile, the problem is real.

Because you get dropped in, most often, during free play (meaning you’re about to be ported to a new map), you can receive the same “Unable to join” message at the end of free play.

The difference between the two is: If you get the issue while you are at the gate (or talking to the NPC), you just try again. If you end up in free play, then you site there, possibly for minutes, THEN get the message when the new map load is attempted. FAR more frustrating!

Also, when this happens in the instance, you are LEFT THERE. You need to exit out, load DR, then go to the NPC or the gate, then try to get in again. You may get a working instance, you may get the error, or you may get free play again, with yet another chance that you’ll get the error when the map reloads.

I have had this happen. Often enough that I now try to play off-hours only so that I am less likely to have the issue.

It is indeed slightly P2W, but not for the reasons you describe.

You need to buy HoT to run the current meta on most classes, if not all. This was of course by design, as Anet needed to provide incentive to purchase the expansion beyond new maps, new skins, etc.

To win the meta maybe, not the game. You can certainly play without having to play the meta config in anything but what, raids? Which are HoT anyway?

orenwolf.1953

BY DEFINITION, any game where you can purchase in-game currency with Real Life money is “pay to win”. It’s actually why you aren’t able to purchase in-game currency with RL money in most MMOs and why there is such a healthy illegal Gold Selling business for games.

That’s a very simplistic mindset and tries to use the letter of the term against the spirit of the term.

Lots of games offer funds as an alternative to advancement for lots of reasons – many are that crazy “Pay2Play” setup where there’s a limited number of plays you get a day and if you want to play more you have to buy a currency that grants you time (insane IMHO). Many still (like GW2) offer exclusive items that don’t give advantages in return for purchased currency.

Here’s the thing though. When people complain about “pay2win”, it’s usually for a combination of the following:

1) Grind is so mind-numbingly bad at higher levels that you are pretty much required to buy items, or else you grind for hundreds and hundreds (or more) of hours to get the items.
2) natural advancement in the game is nerfed so that if you don’t buy upgrades, it becomes almost impossible to succeed at the game, or requires perfect execution
3) the currency needed for 1 or 2, is ONLY purchasable. You can’t earn it in significant quantity in-game.

Now, GW2 has none of those traits:

1) You get 2g/day now just for doing dailies. That’s 700g for about 15 minutes of gameplay/day for a year. That’s a huge part of the ascended cost right there. On top of that, calling gw2 “grindy” for anything short of legendaries (which are not increased stats) is either disingenuous or without due consideration for the systems in other MMOs.
2) Ascended is only a small increase from exotic. You can easily perform in all other game modes than fractals without ascended gear. But most importantly:
3) It’s gold – you get it for playing. And if you want gems, you can convert gold for them – and here’s the thing, lots of people do – the gems2gold exchange is filled with player gold. You’re basically trading gems to players in return for their earned gold (and anet takes a cut to bleed funds from the economy). At no point are you required to buy gems to advance, and – here’s the other kicker – all gemstore items can be purchased by exchanging in-game currency (gold) for gems, so you are never required to purchase gems, even for gemstore items.

So, sure, if you want to call any game anywhere with in-game purchases “Pay2win”, well, you are welcome to. But, as Inigo Montoya says: “You keep using that word – I do not think it means what you think it means..”

Why not try a week without any tactivators ? all objectives down to paper and ppk worth 3 more times ? check the numbers of the players logging in and having fun on the game… cause that’s it in the end, a game where you should have fun, and yet is no fun to sit in front of every tower with 40 ppls just cause 1 guy decide to have fun with1 treb behind gate/cannon etc… he may have fun, the rest of 40 will just log out from wvw, and go pve or w/e.

What you are suggesting is removing everything about WvW that makes it WvW instead of just a large PvP deathmatch map.

I think the bigger issue here is there are (apparently) a large number of people who would like a large, terrainless map devoid of objects to wage 50×50 man zerg PvP matches, and because these don’t exist, they instead do this in WvW.

You wait for the event to spawn for two hours. You get into the map beforehand and do the pre-events. The final boss is at 5% health when all attack animations stop, people keep running in one direction and you get… http://i.imgur.com/PA1VQfF.jpg
You immediately click back on your character and… load into a different instance, where everything failed and there is no reward. You thought of that beforehand and joined a squad… but cannot taxi back because the world is full since someone lucky just joined from an empty map for a quick tag and loot the moment you got kicked out. You do a http://i.imgur.com/1utOQ.png and turn off your PC, thinking of just playing a different game next time you have some free time.

This issue has become unbearable for me in HoT. The 32 bit client, which I am forced to use currently, crashes every few hours in populated maps. Logging back in is only a few seconds thankfully, but almost always results in me losing my rewards by being kicked to another map.

Worse, though, is when you end up on a map that isn’t bothering with the meta or whatever it is you’re working on. Unless there are taxis available, you are literally unable to do what you joined the map for, despite the fact that there is almost certainly an instance you could join that would allow you to do so.

This is mind-numbingly shortsighted, and I really feel for players trying to do anything off-hours or so on, as a result. Maps should remember we were there and let us back in! Additionally, how about an instance selection screen that shows the state of the metas on the map so you can join an active one (perhaps, also, an indication if there’s currently a tagged commander or squad in the instance?)

The current setup is, frankly, untenable.

What I do not understand is that why can 25% of the people decide for 75%.
Why cant it just be 50% vote. I mean this vote could be just reversed that it requires 75% to have 3 months of alpine and 3 months of dbl considering the other option won in the last poll.

This is what one could call 75% dictatorship and 25% democracy :/

Well look at it this way.

If the vote was 50%, and it won 51/49, would it be fair for 51% of the population to decide for the other 49%? At that point it would be either/or, and you’d end up with half of the population not getting what they want.

Instead, three-quarters of the population (a supermajority) need to agree that this is what they want. This is pretty standard practice for major decisions – For example, a 67% supermajority is required for changes to the US constitution. Also, congress can override a veto from the president by 67% vote.

Auto-Attack cancels itself at maximum range

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: orenwolf.1953

orenwolf.1953

Even if the enemy is in range at the 1200 or 1500 limit, your auto-attack skill will cancel itself after 2 attacks. This has been reported by me before right after the game released (since I played staff elementalist) and hasn’t been fixed, ever.

-Server: Devona’s Rest

-Map/location: Anywhere

-Character info(level, race, profession): Any Level, Any Race, but only professions with range of 1100 or more. (IE: Longbow Ranger, Elementalist Staff.)

-How to reproduce issue: Get a character THAT DOES NOT HAVE A CONTINUOUS ATTACK for its spam ability (IE: Don’t use Greatsword Mesmer) and then attack something at the maximum range that the auto-attack will still attack on. Observe that the auto-attack will cancel after one or two attacks as if the enemy was out of range.

Also, even if the target is within in the 1500 range of ranger longbow, the auto-attack 1 skill will still have a red bar under it, meaning the game thinks the enemy is out of range.

Yep. This is very annoying, happens all the time at maximum bow range for Thieves too – I often find that if I’m out very close to (but not beyond, obviously) max range, I have to keep spamming my attack to get it to fire. It won’t autoattack.

Don't penalizing solo players on Megaservers.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: orenwolf.1953

orenwolf.1953

(edit: penalize. I couldn’t edit the topic name after shortening it. Bah.)

I shouldn’t be penalized for solo play if I crash. If we know players who can’t use the 64-bit client will crash from time to time, causing them to enter a new instance is asinine.

The map I was on wasn’t full, but probably full enough that the megaserver algorythm decided I should go to a new one on return, ignoring the progress I had already made in the meta on the existing map, and instead dropping me in a map with no progress at all.

It’s a great way to discourage me enough to give up on that play session. Sure, I can try to find a group, or squad with a commander, but why can’t I just do my part on the map solo, and not be forced into a new map if I crash?

Please take existing effort in a given map into account when re-adding players who disconnect, hard-full map caps aside. Reconnecting players shouldn’t be subjected to the same logic as new map arrivals, and yet that’s exactly what you do.

Thank you.

In early development, we used those portals in the corner of the map to change teams for testing. We’d teleport everyone in the map to that spot when they zoned in, then they would choose the R,G,B portal to then go to their team. They were normally swapped to “off” but from long distances they could bug and you could see them! I think the portals have been completely removed now.

That jumping puzzle I put in was originally going to be a vista. We removed vistas from portal keeps before ship, and I lazy artist’d it by just removing a rock or two. xD

Thanks, though we’re aware. This is happening with any Tiger fight. We’re still looking into a fix. If you can get everyone to leave the event area, then return after about 1 or 2 minutes, the event will reset and you can try to spawn it again. This is the only known workaround. Please note that the workaround may take a few tries to get it working.

Got it, thanks – I’ll give it a shot. The problem at the moment seems to be getting people to leave, since there’s a small swarm of people up there at any point

Definitely seeing this happen for several people on Step 7 of the journal. When you get to the top of the rock formation in Sparkfly Fen, there’s no tigers, despite their Health meters popping up.

Not one, but TWO of the events needed for this journey, contain issues that get them “stuck”, and cannot progress.

“Escort the quaggan emissary to the kodan camp”, http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Escort_the_quaggan_emissary_to_the_kodan_camp and

“Rescue the villagers and defeat harpy kidnappers”,
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rescue_the_villagers_and_defeat_harpy_kidnappers

If you look at the discussion pages for these quests, they have both been broken. Since 2013. 2013.

I’m at a loss to understand how it is that these bugs weren’t obvious, big blaring stoppers to launching this legendary journey – I mean, it’s not like they’re obscure? How do you create a legendary journey that involves not one, but two, two-year-old, progress-blocking bugs like that?

WHY would they attach a legendary precursor quest to not one, but TWO dynamic events that are reported as bugging out for two years now?!

Seriously, how does that happen?

SHA-1 deprecation, so the fix should be pretty quick once it’s in.
