I thought the indirect methods of causing the Ancient Karka pain were interesting, and certainly invoked some panic while trying to figure out what we were being told to do and exactly what parts of the environment were usable for the next step. Unfortunately, we were told what to do through the event assistant instead of a more organic method, like an NPC shouting orders or something similar; that I didn’t care for so much, and it took quite a long time for the group as a whole to figure out that that’s where our instructions were coming from so a lot of useless fighting happened instead of furthering the event chain.
I did not care for the Reinforcements section at all, and cared even less when it came around a second time, if it were even possible to care less.
Additionally, I didn’t care for having to go up and down the nest twice.
Those two parts were a grind. The first time was marginally acceptable, but having to repeat them made it seem like ANet was struggling to pad out the event to something that was “multi-hour”, like they promised.
P.S. an equalization of rewards and game face time needs to be made to the players. Well ANet we are waiting for your response to this mess. Last thing we want to see is some post on how well things went. Ball is in your court.
This.
I’ve noticed that no one in ArenaNet is saying anything about this in a constructive manner. Most threads here don’t have an official response, and those that do are just reminders to stay on topic or some other non-committal nonsense.
I want to know what ANet learned from their failings and I want to know how they plan to adjust to customer feedback.
And I want to know now.
This.
And these materials are just like the other materials, why can’t they go in the Collections section?
I have essences and shards and whatnot that are stacking in my bank, wasting space, and I don’t have the resources to buy additional space. What’s the deal?
The fact is I MISSED OUT. Through no fault of my own. I dont see why i need to sacrifice more than Joe Everyday over in the US or Europe to attend the event. The game is meant to cater to everyone equally.
I can relate to this.
I was evacuated from my home on the east coast and missed a large portion of the Halloween event, through no fault of my own, and was disallowed from completing it.
Again, through no fault of my own. I’d probably feel differently about it if I weren’t a paying customer or didn’t have my life and property threatened, in that case.
I had a rather lengthy email discussion with tech support in which I was told that, even though they sympathized with my case, there was no way I’d ever be able to complete the content or have the associated rewards granted (including achievements). They implied some technical limitations, but I don’t believe them at all.

Hello again,You are correct in your understanding of our response. At this time there is no way to complete the achievement as the necessary events have already ended and we are unable to award you the achievement. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
If you have any other issues or questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Okay, let me make sure I’m understanding what you’re saying.
There is no way to make this achievement up in the future; I’ve missed the opportunity, through no fault of my own, to complete this content. Additionally, there’s absolutely no way for this achievement to be granted retroactively (I’ve completed over 70% of the achievement already). Is all this true?
I understand the bit about discontinuing the event; indeed, I didn’t ask for it to be reinstated, and the way you’re talking about this
makes it sound like the achievement cannot be [granted] without the event, which I find hard to believe.
I got some stuff in the mid seventies, but I disposed of it rather quickly (salvaged or sold).
I was surprised, really, and I did a double-take when I saw that the stuff wasn’t level 80.
Was this intended? I don’t understand.
Bump, in the hopes that the ANet team will see this.
I sympathize. I hope this works out for you.
10/10
Would read again.
I don’t understand why there’s culling that’s outside the control of the gamer.
I know my hardware better than anyone else, especially better than some game engine implementer, and I can accurately adjust my settings to make it playable as I need to. I’ve never seen such horribly-implemented “optimization”.
Render everything by default and leave it up to the player to adjust the settings. Or, better, leave your “optimizations” in place (I’m sure they were trying to pander to the less-than-avid hardware user, seems to be a trend these days, while insulting those of use who get it) and give the option to have full control available for us that want it when we want it.
Its nothing to do with this..Its the netcode thats the issue
Thats a nice tip Kaz though Im not sure why it did anything as all the info is still passed through regardless….
Yeah, that may contribute to the problem too, which makes me wonder what exactly is being transmitted and how that can be optimized.
Someone else suggested this, but it was less obvious in their comment.
There are also conflicting reports of this elsewhere, like the tech support threads, that imply the user’s machine has something to do with it as well.
What I really want is the development team to weigh in on this and give us tips to optimize our gameplay until there are solid fixes in place to address it.
Why does your experience invalidate everyone else’s experience?
A new group called the consortium showed up, and changed Tyria forever. We now have all new holiday destination (southsun cove) and a new asura gate to random locations for adventure (fractals)
Maybe I missed it, but how did the Consortium change Tyria forever?
I don’t understand why there’s culling that’s outside the control of the gamer.

It’s not just rendering but also the amount of information passed.
Then their netcode needs to be improved? I don’t understand what you’re getting at.
Hahaha.
Woah. Is that for real?
I want one!
“What I expected was something larger in scale: new pervasive mobs or mob types, a new class, a new playable race, some new utility skills, a new elite skill, permanently-changed world geometry on a larger scale than a missing lighthouse or other such game-jarring things.”
There are new mobs, new mob types, and a level 80 zone (with access to T6 mats) unlocked. Willful ignorance on your part?
No.
I said ‘pervasive’, implying that they were, say, causing a ruckus elsewhere in the world or perhaps the new mobs’ design and behaviors implied updates or changes to existing mobs. Something significant and far-reaching.
All in all I think this was event much larger in scope and better executed than the first major free content release for the original GW (Sorrow’s Furnace). I’m happy.
I’m sincerely glad you found some enjoyment in this. More often than not, the ones who are satisfied with something are the ones who stay silent about it.
I, for one, enjoyed exploring the Fractals for myself, and I was lucky enough to get into a Fractal before a wiki was posted on it, so it was pure exploration and trial and error. Lots of fun, really.
it’s amazing how no matter what happens in the GW2 world these forums light up with armies of QQ’ers expecting the world to cater to their personal tastes and schedules.
I did not get a precursor, and who cares! If you’re complaining about not getting one, then you don’t deserve it anyway. Nobody is entitled to loot just because they want it.
Unfortunately, this shows how disconnected you are with the problems people are having.
It’s not just scheduling concerns, which are legitimate complaints for timezone discrepancies. There are myriad other issues that made this event unplayable or unenjoyable for customers as well, including hardware and network latency. Shards crashed, settings were lowered and still there were latency issues, and other problems were reported that are inherently not the issue of the PC owner.
The legitimate concerns about not getting a precursor are not that customers didn’t get one, it’s that they didn’t get the chance to get one, and that’s much different. There’s no other way to get them from drops, as far as I know, just a significantly large time commitment and wasted materials in the Mystic Forge.

I was wondering this as well.
What other changes happened in Tyria? Adding a new (but comparatively tiny) explorable zone is not what the hype lead me to believe would be the outcome of these changes that would persist “forever!”
I also don’t consider new recipes and three new materials to be part of this hyped up change.
What I expected was something larger in scale: new pervasive mobs or mob types, a new class, a new playable race, some new utility skills, a new elite skill, permanently-changed world geometry on a larger scale than a missing lighthouse or other such game-jarring things. Not all of those things, but something along those lines.
Yes, the limits on models are abhorrent. Can I tweak these settings myself somewhere? This is a PC game, after all, that option should be around somewhere.
Can I get a response from a dev about when this will be fixed, or where the option is to adjust it myself? This is making the large-scale events of this game, which were a huge selling point, as I recall, unplayable.
/signed
I managed to get to the end of the event, but got a chest filled with scaled loot (76 loot for an 80 toon?) and an exotic unusable by my class. No precursor, but six were linked to in chat by people around me.
Not only that, but I only got credit for 50 kills out of the myriad of kills I participated in. I was able to count them because my daily had reset and I hadn’t played since it had reset.
There are simply too many issues with this game and it’s supporting processes for this to be feasible ever again. It needs to stop.
1. 90% of GW2 players dont know how to move out of green kitten and instead just stay in it and die.
2. 90% of GW2 players rather let the other 10% finish the fight and then rezz them instead of running back from waypoint to help out with the fight again.=P
Unfortunately, the area covered by the green kitten was usually too large to get out of without dying, or, as others have noticed, the lag was just too great and you were killed even if you were watching out for it.
And releasing and running from a waypoint was dangerous in itself, too many veteran Karka flanked by Veteran Young Karka on the way and, being a squishy Elementalist, this was not a viable option for me. Those Karka made the majority of players just as squishy as me, so I don’t blame them for waiting for a rez instead of attempting to run from a waypoint.
I’m getting frustrated with this problem, and I did some searching through the forums to find information on it so when I didn’t find anything I decided to document it while in today’s highly-populated event.
I’m getting tired of running through highly-populated areas and not seeing players or guildmates or, worse, being killed by enemies (mobs or players in WvW) that I cannot see.

Precursors will be easier to get in the future, confirmed many times now. Will be a quest type scavenger hunt.
That’s cool, and I’m interested in seeing it being rolled out.
But it isn’t that right now, so that’s the problem.
There is no other event in the game, or dungeon that offers such rewards or even a chance remotely close. That is the issue.
Yeah, I know. I agree, this is the issue.
I would be really disappointed to hear if they try to justify doing this by saying that it was a one-time event.
Argh. When I saw people linking precursors and not knowing what they were I almost had a heart attack.
Precursors? Really? What about all the items and materials I’ve wasted over the months trying to get them myself.
I made off with two whites from vets and largely no experience from killing anything (vets or champs).
Of the hundreds of Karka out there, I only got kill credit for 50 of them. I was able to keep track of this using my daily kill tracker since I hadn’t played since it reset.
I don’t understand how this could happen. It baffles the mind.
Here are some screenshots of the atrocities I cannot stand to continue to experience in this game.

That’s pretty slick. Good eye.
Too bad things like this are totally occluded by bad delivery.
Careful, the moderators are quick to censor references to other games.
See this post. You’re SOL, they’re refusing to reinstate that part of the quest.
Well written, and well reasoned.
No it kitten well isn’t.
He essentially argued that ANet’s product isn’t “in working order” because their content update had lag issues and some of the lead-up events are bugged. It’s an MMO in it’s early days for chrissakes. The update included some great new content as well, which no-one seems willing to focus on, and I for one am glad they gave us what they did instead of nothing.
Gamers are incapable of gratitude.
Sorry, let me clarify my warrant for agreeing with him.
I write software for a living, on a contract basis, and I have two startups under my belt. I’ve been a VP and a CO at both of those companies, I love my work and I’m good at it.
I do exactly what the OP was talking about in my own work, and have the exact same expectations impressed upon me by my clients and hold myself to the same standards.
I know how it’s done. I won’t be gracious for a sub-par product, as a gamer and as a software professional.
There were some events that we could not extend past Phase 1, unfortunately. Extending all events in Phase 1 would have been a much more extensive fix, requiring much more time to thoroughly regress. Given the time sensitive nature of the event, we extended what portions we were able to effectively.
Our developers are reading all of your feedback and are taking all the critiques on board.
We apologize that this means that folks are not able to complete the Miyani chain.
This sounds like a design issue, if there’s a technical reason why NPCs can’t be duplicated in the world to enable events to happen. The phases and their contents should have been mutually exclusive to the other phases and their contents, or at least the NPCs and their supporting code should have been designed with better encapsulation in mind.
I’m not impressed.
EDIT: fixed some grammar.
Maybe it’s just a couple of days because it’s new, wait a couple of days and try again.
While this sounds reasonable, I don’t want to wait to play. I don’t have the leisure of waiting either; I want to play when I can, not at some time that’s dictated by the mechanics of some part of the game.
Guys, if your expectations are that high, start paying $30 a month, or else please appreciate what ANet has done and stop complaining that much. They obviously don’t have to bring out new contents in such a short time.
If you run a business and start selling a service, people who pay for that service generally expect it to be in proper working order. When you buy an MMO, people also usually expect there to be content updates and events over time. It’s not like buying a console game, which tend to be static.. and even those usually have reliable updates, these days.
And before even selling it, Anet mentioned there would be content updates. It wasn’t some neat bonus you found out about after buying it, it was one of the selling points.
It does not make a lick of difference whether you paid $60 one time or $15 every month for the rest of your playing experience. It wouldn’t even matter if you only paid $5 for the game, you still dished out your hard earned cash for a service that isn’t working as implied when you paid.If a commissioner paid me to draw or paint them a picture and I drew it how a five year old would, I sure as hell wouldn’t be surprised if they called me on it and told me to fix it. Since they paid me for a service and they definitely did not get what they paid for. I can’t just tell them “tough kitten” and move on with their cash in pocket. That would be absolutely shameful and I would expect lots of people to jump on me for it and for my business to suffer. And I would deserve it.
I have had to fix commissions before, even though I was tired of the piece and I really just wanted it to be done with. Because I’m the one that screwed up, I’m the only one who’s responsible for that. I’m not going to punish my customer for my failing.
Well written, and well reasoned.
The following sequence was supposed to happen:
- Trebuchet is built by workers
- Ancient Karka shows up
- Trebuchet fires at Ancient Karka
- Ancient Karka jumps into the water and flees to Southsun Cove
- Boat to Southsun Cove is available
- Players travel to Southsun Cove to fight karka there
We understand that this was not clear in the way the event unfolded, and this feedback will be relayed to the development team (thank you to those who have provided feedback about this and all the other events). We apologize at the frustration you all experienced due to this event being stuck.
Of those things, I only experienced steps two, five and six.
I don’t think it was the event being stuck, I think it was how the progression of events was communicated to the players.
I think this could have been helped with more communication from NPCs in the moment, and not through in-game mail.
For example, after the fight with the Ancient Karka, instead of telling the players to ‘get on a boat’, the NPCs could have said ’let’s prepare a boat at [some location] and set sail as soon as possible!’
Not only does this set the appropriate expectation of having to wait for the trip to the island, it reduces the confusion induced by getting on the boat and going nowhere.
Additionally, getting to Southsun didn’t involve getting on a boat at all. The NPC to start the journey was on the dock, and the cutscene didn’t even involve a boat at all.
I have to say that they should not have made a big deal about this event nor should they have made it the free trial period. That was a terrible event. You could elaborate on it quite a bit with the terrible items, worthless store items, poor communications, aweful execution and weak content. It’s vitual buffet of horrible.
What happened? GW1 had great items and excellent events. Practically the high water mark for any mmo. GW2 seems to not have heard of this “GW1” people keep talking about.
I like the game, but I’m saddened to see how little experience was carried over form the first GW.
This. Absolutely. Every word is true.
Blackgate non-overflow update. He just ran towards the cliff and magically disappeared. Is that normal?
Yes, that is what it was supposed to do.
The trebuchet was meant to fire at the karka, chasing it off into the ocean. Then people take the boat to Southsun Cove to fight the karka on their home turf.
Regardless of whether that karka is still there, the boat to Southsun Cove should have appeared on your map so you can travel to the island.
That wasn’t obvious at all. Was there dialog that I missed explaining it? There should have been. Sudden de-spawn looks like a bug when not explained.
Also, I couldn’t see the mob. That bug is still around.
Guys, if your expectations are that high, start paying $30 a month, or else please appreciate what ANet has done and stop complaining that much. They obviously don’t have to bring out new contents in such a short time.
I don’t think the expectation of having well-tested events that are highly-advertised and hyped bug-free is a high expectation.
I also don’t think it’s too high of an expectation when one pays money and expects a good quality product for one’s hard-earned money.
If ArenaNet doesn’t have the resources to put out good-quality content then they need to hire more staff (developers, quality assurance, designers, managers, whatever it takes) or adjust their release timelines to put out a good product.
If I were ArenaNet and I released this product with the hopes of attracting new players by giving out free trials I’d be supremely embarrassed by how the Lost Shores event has been going and wouldn’t expect many new players.
I’m largely disappointed.
In Lion’s Arch, I fought over by the Fort Marriner waypoint for about two minutes (checked the clock, actually) and I had to resort to spamming AOEs because no enemy mobs were visible on the screen (this bug still hasn’t been fixed). I was downed and killed a few times inexplicably, which I have no tolerance for. I don’t mind dying (I play Demon’s/Dark Souls), and it can be fun and challenging in some situations, but this was absurd.
Then the event there ended abruptly (I received copper participation, but I’m not sure how) and confusion about that ensued. The NPCs talked about boarding a boat, so I went over to the harbor and jumped on the boat with a group of other players and nothing happened, so we wandered around for a while. There were conflicting reports of having to go back to Fort Marriner because of a Tweet (what does it say about your game’s communication with its players when you rely on Twitter to give them information about a live, high-profile event in a perpetual world?) and speculation about the boat.
Eventually we stumbled across the new NPC that was ferrying people to Southsun Cove (to one of two points, but this choice was unexpected and the consequences of choosing one over the other were unclear because they were never mentioned before that time).
I arrived at Point Pride and we blindly defended an NPC against invisible enemies again for a few minutes, capped some points for siege equipment that I never saw being erected and arrived at a camp.
Everyone within the camp walls was instantly downed by a cheap shot from a campion Karka that appeared without warning (even warriors with full exotics; I myself have full exotics on my Elementalist).
Then the champion was beaten and everyone was dispersing because there was a lull in the dialog, so some players missed the start of the event to ‘make a road’.
The event chain eventually split into two, but this wasn’t clearly presented to us. Do we follow the Consortium crony? How were we to know that was an option when the Lionguard NPCs was so against it to begin with?
And then that was it! We followed the NPC until the event chain didn’t lead to other events, and then we were free to explore. But no one explored right away, because we were all running in circles looking for the next event in the chain that didn’t exist.
The map is disappointingly small, the events are the same old events as everywhere else in Tyira (gather some eggs, defend this point from that enemy, guard this person on patrol).
And that’s just Phase 2. I couldn’t complete Phase 1 because every event was bugged, even when it was ‘fixed’ last night (Blackgate and Stormbluff Isle), so I was missing context and all that hard work put into the content that was bugged was wasted.
Is it too much to ask for content that’s been thoroughly tested?
I mean, bugs in the repeat-ability of a step in a quest chain are inexcusable. Canach is sill broken after this “patch”, and asking me to wait until Phase 2 starts to complete Phase 1? Come on. It’s embarrassing, really, and on a weekend when you’re trying to increase your player base through free trials.
If you can’t handle the demands of your content update schedule then hire more developers or change your goals to be more attainable.
I think I’m going to play something else.
