You know, I love the Pacific Northwest, but what you said really struck me. I’ve lived in another state and another country on a completely different continent, but never have I lived where there are so many bloomin’ power outages! I don’t know what it is, except that the Puget Sound region gets a lot of wind and we have (thank goodness, it’s what drew me here!) a lot of trees. So a branch goes down in Puyallup (try saying that if you aren’t a PNW resident ) and a house in Renton or Issaquah (try that one, too, just for fun ) can find itself in darkness.

Anyway, I know this is off topic, but don’t worry, I’m not directly working on the patch, so my posting to mention our region’s electrical anomalies isn’t taking away from the update!

I was going to say that Puyallup and Issaquah are easy compared to Sequim and Kalaloch, but then I remembered that I am from the PNW (though thankfully, no power loss over here in Forks!) and so I can’t really talk since I’m used to all of them…

This could lead to you being disciplined, so it’s best to keep the rules in mind even when you have a legitimate reason to be upset.

Several times during the Pact encampment meta last night, the “sylvari loyalties” event to kill the tendrils bugged and blocked progress on the Pact Encampment for that event cycle, making T4 impossible. After the second tendril, the circle indicating where the event is would start to move across the stone bridge towards the third location and then stop, approximately centered on the bridge, and the third set of tendrils would fail to spawn.

A fix for this would be good, please, because it’s frustrating enough to lose T4 to us as players not managing to do everything needed, but when progress is blocked by an event malfunction, it’s just downright discouraging.

Gem Outfits vs Gem Armor

Yes, worse than that. To be honest, that’s pretty mild clipping compared to what could happen. The top and skirt don’t mesh well, but I’ll be perfectly honest: it looks okay to me, at least in a still shot. Might be a bit weirder moving. Still, to me, the weirdest part would be wearing an impeccably tailored top with a skirt that looks like it was stitched together by someone who had never before touched needle and thread and who had their eyes closed the entire time.

Backpieces clip badly a few armor. It’s a problem, and one there’s no good solution for aside from “don’t wear armor that has things sticking out of your back if you want a large backpiece.” My elementalist wears that top frequently, and when she does, I put the first stage of Mawdrey on her back. Hey, no clipping. If you literally expect every single piece of armor to work with every single backpiece, you’re looking at strongly limiting armors, or making all backpieces tiny to reduce coverage and clipping risk.

As for your idea, isn’t the entire point of asking for the outfits to be cut into pieces so that people can mix and match? If that didn’t include the top and bottom being separate, there would be just as much howling over that as there is now over outfits being all one piece (apart from the head). And it still wouldn’t prevent clipping the other way – which is to say, medium armor wearers wearing, oh, the female fancy winter outfit legs with a medium top and then they have a huge skirt and bustle sticking out of their long leather coat.

It would only work if ALL tops overrode the leg skin with whatever their matching leg skin in, and that would make a lot of people even more unhappy than they are already.

Gem Outfits vs Gem Armor

The reason it won’t happen is because armor for different weights splits differently. For light and heavy, it splits entirely at the waist; any long coats or dresses have the bottom half of the coat or dress as part of the “pants.” However, on medium armor, legs are separate and long coats and skirts are a part of the top, with legs worn under them. This is also why you won’t see medium armor skins being given to light and heavy classes, or light/heavy armor being given to medium professions.

The amount of clipping on certain professions, depending on how they split it up, would be egregious. Split an outfit like light/heavy, and medium coats will clip outrageously with the bottom half of the outfit. Split it like medium armor, and light/heavy bottoms will clip. People would buy the skins and then be absolutely outraged at the amount of clipping.

So yes, clipping is the reason, but it would be far worse than current armors ever clip, and that is why they won’t do it.

I have four guardians (two at 80), three necros (one at 80), two thieves (one at 80), two mesmers (one at 80), two rangers (both 80), two engis (one 80), two eles (both 80), and one warrior (80). That’s on my primary account! My secondary account I’m not really going to bother listing, though, since it exists to 1) play with my sister on an equal footing as a new account as she levels her first character, and 2) to make temporary copies of characters from my main account so if I need to have two characters in one place at the same time for RP purposes, I can do it.

I love making sylvari. That’s pretty much my sole reason; I keep making more of them! And there are some classes I enjoy more than others, so I tend to make my new characters of those classes, but I also try to keep it somewhat gender-balanced (two of my guardians are male, 2 are female, everything with 2 is a male and female). The exceptions are warrior, which I dislike playing enough that between that and not liking female heavy armor much, I haven’t talked myself into making a female warrior, and necros, which I have one male and two female of after making a female version of my male necro so I could dress him up in pretty clothing, since Anet refuses to give us actual armor parity. He’s also the only exception to all of them having distinct looks.

I keep it interesting by trying different builds and weapons on different characters of the same class. My female ranger uses shortbow and axe/warhorn, while my male ranger uses longbow and sword/warhorn, for example, and their builds reflect their weapon choices. My female ele is d/d (mostly, though she has staves for appropriate content of course), my male ele is staff. Female necro is axe/dagger and staff, male necro (and his female version) is scepter/dagger and staff. Male engi is rifle and flamethrower kit, female is pistol/pistol and bombs/grenades, etc etc.

And I just enjoy playing a guardian a lot (which surprised me, when I first rolled one I thought I’d hate it like I do warrior, but joke was on me I loved it). I’m currently leveling one as a hammer guard, trying to get used to how that feels; it’s the one guardian weapon I’m not very comfortable with because of how slow it moves, so I’m trying to change that.

Naming my Sylvari Ranger

in Lore

Posted by: qarinus.3869

qarinus.3869

You can also fudge a surname if, for example, it’s something that might be given to him by others rather than him claiming one himself. I have a Ranger whose name is Linn Shadecaster. The ‘Shadecaster’ was given to him by his friends among the norn as a joke combined with a mark of respect, because he’s a tree who is half their height and his hunting skills ‘put theirs in the shade’. (And to clarify, there are plenty of norn as skilled as he is or better, just not in his friend group! He’s not that special.) He doesn’t really give the ‘Shadecaster’ part to others when he introduces himself, but he answers to it – it’s along the lines of a nickname that got stuck after his name rather than replacing it. He knows his friends wouldn’t have given him the name if they didn’t consider him ‘one of them’, so it’s kind of a badge of pride for him, even if he doesn’t think of himself as it.

You can also append his Cycle – “Noonbloom,” “Of The Dawn,” etc.

Of course, if you can find a single-word name you want to use that isn’t currently in use, there’s no reason to include a surname, but if you’re having troubles with that, there are ways to do it that don’t break lore. (Maybe… bend it a little, but not outright break!)

“RNG is acting like RNG, it MUST be rigged!”

Your belief or disbelief doesn’t change the fact that random is random. I got lucky this time and got a portal drop. For the last beta, I wasn’t one of the lucky ones, because my email wasn’t drawn out of the hat. There is absolutely no reason they would flag my account in particular; they don’t know my history with MMOs or any past beta experience I’ve had, my rig is middle of the road and my operating system is standard. From a technical standpoint, I am identical to thousands of others. I have a good number of hours played and a decent achievement point score, but again, thousands of people can say both those things.

But, you know, go on believing if that’s what makes you happier! Goodness knows these conspiracy theories pop up literally everywhere there’s RNG, because there are always people need to assume it wasn’t just bad luck so they have something to direct their disappointment at, instead of shrugging and letting it go.

not getting loot for bosses.

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Shaman, only a certain number of people (I think it’s been determined to be 50?) can get loot from one enemy. The first (50?) people to become eligible for loot are the only ones who will get it. That means you not only need to hit enough for credit, it means you need to do it faster than a lot of other people in a big fight like the world bosses. This isn’t a problem under most circumstances, but world bosses attract extremely large groups, thereby leaving a number of people out of loot.

This is one reason a lot of people join groups, because you can get your “enough to tag” much, much faster in a group, as everyone’s damage counts for everyone. To up your odds of getting loot when doing events with large attendance, join a group.

Weindrasi, that’s a rather twisted take on what was actually said, which was that Mordremoth’s influence uses the same aperture in a sylvari’s mental protection that Wyld and Dark Hunts do. That doesn’t mean that Hunts come from Mordremoth – and it would be absolutely bizarre if they did, since many hunts do nothing to further the dragon’s control of the world.

Additionally, the player character has not finished their Wyld Hunt. It “rested” after killing Zhaitan, but the PC sylvari states that they felt their hunt again in Living Story Season 2.

Precursor skins unlock for legendary weapons?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

qarinus.3869

The old skins will not cease to exist. The old skins are assigned to the two pre-precursor weapons you receive while doing the new collections. This was in the information on the new precursor crafting method.

“The first collection is all about the hunt, so you’ll be proving your abilities by fighting fierce creatures around Tyria and acquiring a trophy to show for it. By completing this collection, you’ll unlock a recipe to craft the first iteration of your precursor—a nontradable exotic weapon with a distressed version of the existing precursor skin. It could use a little polish and refinement, which will be the focus of the second tier collection.

The second collection in your journey involves doing your research, talking to the experts, and honing your craft. You’ll need to barter for knowledge, seek out great minds and convince them to teach you their tricks, and prove your ability at the crafting workbench. All this work allows you to refine your base precursor into its next iteration. Completing this collection unlocks a recipe to do just that, resulting in another nontradable exotic weapon with the existing precursor skin."

papaflesas, I noticed recently while mapping in Fields of Ruin that one of the skill points there isn’t showing up on the map. If the problem isn’t that you’re too low level (they won’t show on the map or be usable until level 13) and that’s where you were mapping, look over by the harpy nests in the northeast corner of the map. The set that’s slightly further south-east and up a little rise from from the others.

If it’s neither of these issues, then I’m afraid I can’t help. I did just complete all the zones except cities over the last ~two weeks and didn’t notice any other skill point oddities.

Nike, my father also drank himself to death, which came less than a year ago though the process was of course extremely drawn out. I sympathize with your loss, but I disagree with your conclusions.

Alcoholism isn’t something that can’t be fought, and while no, it’s not entirely about willpower, willpower is a factor. The most important part is that you have to want to quit. After that, you have to have the willpower to stick with it, even when you feel the urge to drink. My father never wanted to, even when his drinking, and his abusive, destructive behavior when drunk, cost him his job and his family. Even when it was indisputably killing him, he didn’t want to stop.

My mother, on the other hand, put alcohol aside despite having also been an alcoholic, because she saw and acknowledged what her excessive and constant drinking was doing to her children and she wanted to quit. And then she stuck with it, despite the constant temptation presented by the presence of alcohol in the house. It was extremely difficult for her, and saying it has no relation to willpower is an insult to her perseverance and strength. It insults all recovering alcoholics who crave drink, but face those feelings and say, “No. Not now, not today.”

Promoting a victim mentality towards alcoholism is unhealthy. Alcoholism is a disease with genetic roots, but it’s a disease that can’t be put into remission without the active effort of the alcoholic. My father bought into the victim mentality and felt that the world should rearrange itself to comfort and tolerate him in his disease rather than acknowledging that his disease was damaging himself and everyone around him and trying to change. That is what killed him.

Now, as to the sylvari – comparing Mordremoth’s control to alcoholism is a fundamentally flawed comparison, frankly. Mordremoth’s control is not a drug of any sort; sylvari don’t dip into it socially, it isn’t used by many who have no problems with it and use it in moderation. And it, like the other dragons’ control (so far as we currently know!), is not something that can be broken free of without special, entirely external influences, once it’s established.

I find it far more likely that proximity and the as-yet unspecified protection that the Pale Tree offers them is what prevents them from being controlled. Those who obeyed the dragon’s call (that we know about so far) all ventured close to Mordremoth’s main body, and had lost the protection of the Pale Tree whether through active rejection (Soundlessness) or the Pale Tree’s damaged state that weakens her.

It says that sylvari who were born were taken under the tutelage of the firstborn who was tending the tree when they awoke. Which could have been any of the three, not the first one.

The more likely interpretation is that the firstborn of each cycle took turns tending her during their cycle, and it has nothing to do with the luminaries at all. It’s very much a stretch to say the word “that” implies only the first of the cycle, and not “the one who was tending the tree right then and found the newborn.”

Thank you for your post, Angel! It’s good to see that my long-time assumption that Trahearne is the first dusk based on his traits is in fact on track.

Overall, I’m sure there was a great deal of distress on both parts; Caithe had to kill one of her sisters, the Pale Tree lost one of her Firstborn daughters, and they must both have realized they were losing Faolain in a different manner. More than that, Caithe had a new and terrifying secret to keep, and I’m sure she wanted answers.

I would hope that the Pale Tree would forgive Caithe for not seeing how terrible Faolain had become sooner and refusing to help her reach Wynne. It’s clear that Faolain was manipulating and emotionally abusing Caithe; when you’re the focus of a person like that, it is incredibly difficult to see what’s going on and break away. That Caithe did at last isn’t something to scorn her for not having achieved earlier; it’s something to be proud of her for managing at all.

I think it would be a very sorrowful conversation. Maybe a little angry, a little despairing. And maybe just a little relieved that the secret was safe, despite the tragedy it took.

Inf. ring doesn't count for Treasure Hunter

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

This is most likely because the infused and uninfused versions of rings are two different items. You having the infused ring will not trigger the collection to see that you have the item it wants, because you don’t – it wants the uninfused version. You will need to acquire the uninfused version for it to register for the achievement.

EDIT: Yeah, just confirmed this myself – I hadn’t logged in to my ele, who has the uninfused ring, since the patch, while my guardian, who I have played, has the uninfused version. My collection was also not showing the ring as having been obtained. When I logged into my ele just now, it registered it for the achievement.

It isn’t a matter of when it was obtained, it’s a matter of infused vs uninfused. Having the infused version simply won’t work for the collection.

Before the patch, you had unlocked those slots in the old system, and put skills in them. Now they are “locked” again, but still have the skills you slotted before. Count yourselves lucky, most characters at that level don’t even have the one unchanging skill in those slots!

Utility slot 2 and 3

Zel, your character must be below level 35, right?

Part of the new update is that the last utility and the elite (the “fourth utility”) don’t unlock until level 35 and level 40 respectively. Because you already had them slotted, you can continue to use the ones you have slotted, but you can’t change them, because technically, they’re “locked.”

jeweler back items

Sariel, the difference is, these are supposed to be profession-based backpacks, not just ordinary recipes. They should take things that the profession can make – and they do, with the single exception of the jeweler. If a chef can make a backpack with mashed yams, a jeweler should be able to make one with things they can actually produce.

If it’s intended, it’s really stupid, particularly with the comparison to chef!

Minis Double Achiev bug

Removing old achievements would be a terrible idea. I put a lot of effort and gold into collecting the minis for set 1. I gave one of those minis to a good friend later since it suited one of their characters perfectly and they couldn’t afford it. This does not invalidate what I put into the achievement. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I doubt Anet intended to remove them to start with. For one thing, it would be a terrible precedent, to start removing people’s achievement points, whether you think they’re deserved or not. For another, it would put a lot of people who did legitimately earn the achievements out, just because they didn’t hang onto all of the minis forever after getting the achievement. If you get them all together at once? You’ve collected them, plain and simple. You don’t have to keep them forever. That’s not collecting – that’s hoarding.

Jeweler backpack uses wrong ingots

Wanted to bump and confirm this. Jeweler backpacks should not be asking for ingots that jewelers can’t even make, but they are. It’s not a profession backpack if I have to buy the ingots from someone else!

Yes, that sounds like a fabulous idea, put historians in the Grove to tell us all about human history in the area… when, er, what’s important about the Grove, and what we should be learning about there, is the current actual inhabitants.

You view humans as the most important race in the game, clearly. I do not. I wouldn’t mind learning about that history, but a “racial city tour guide” should focus on that race, not the way humans related to the area that race lives in.

While I love the idea of all the racial homes getting historians and tours, how about a great huge “no” on the idea of Humans Must Be The Most Important And Know Everything.

Your average sylvari could tell you the entire history of the sylvari – all, oh, 27-ish years of it, you don’t need special historians. Find a Firstborn and hey, they’ve lived the whole thing.

The charr aren’t going to let human tour guides give visitors to the Black Citadel a human perspective on their city and people.

The Asura wouldn’t believe humans could do their history and brilliance justice,

The norn skaalds are basically made for telling the oral history of their people.

Humans are simply not the best choice for telling any of the other race’s history. Let the other races speak for themselves, telling their history in their own perspective. It would be absolutely galling to me if this were done but humans were used for it just to make sure they’re ~important~.

Humans are welcome to tell their own history, but their voices are not the ones that matter on the other races’ histories, and they shouldn’t be.

I’m hesitant to declare my problem entirely fixed after it went on so long, however, I haven’t had the error since the last patch, and I haven’t reset my router in over 35 hours; previously, the longest I managed without the error popping up and requiring a reset to temporarily fix was about four hours.

So… things are looking hopeful?

Arborist armor MIA

Yes, the arborist armor is the T1 sylvari cultural gear for heavy armor wearers. It can only be purchased from the T1 vendor in the Grove, and may not be traded or sold. T2 is Warden armor, and T3 is Oaken armor; they have different appearances.

If you wanted to upgrade the stats of your armor without changing the look, you will have to get different armor and use transmutation charges to put the arborist skins over your new armor in the wardrobe.
