Hearts and Minds: Mordremoth fight :(

Old thread…nothing has changed.

I don’t mind if the achievements or challenge modes are tough for those that love their old school MMO grinds. But the normal story mode is something we all need to get through just to unlock important parts of the game even if we hate doing the stories.

This is not fun.

Edit: I should have mentioned that the only thing making this un-fun is the difficulty in finding the updrafts during the final fight. All they need to do is add some markers to show where they are or even better: make them look like every other updraft in the game! There are so many special effects in that fight and these updrafts are so easy to miss because they don’t look like the ones we are used to from everywhere else in the game!

Rune of the Berserker display bug?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: raykor.6723

raykor.6723

I just upgraded to a set of Berserker runes and I am not seeing the +5% damage displayed on any of my skill’s tooltips.

I tested by swapping out the boots for another pair that have the exact same power and condition damage but not the Berserker rune (thus disabling the 6th +5% bonus).

When I do that my skill tooltips show the exact same physical and condition damage.

As if the +5% is doing nothing?

Basic build questions

Thanks for the guidance. I do understand that no build is a substitute for smart play: dodge, blind, reflect, boss tactics, etc.

I think what I’m hearing is that a pure DPS build is not the only way to play and that balanced or even support builds have a place in both PvE and WvW.

Basic build questions

raykor.6723

My main is an Elementalist but these are pretty general questions. And yes, I have been doing my homework…reading a number of build guides, watching videos, and scouring MetaBattle.

I am in the process of crafting my first set of Ascended gear and am trying to decide what stats to prioritize. I am interested in both PvE and WvW and starting to think that I may need two completely different sets of gear. Or maybe not.

My current Exotics build is pretty much a balanced build. Sure, I would love to see huge damage numbers but I wanted some more survivability. It has been working pretty well in PvE during my first few months. I see a whole lot of people dropping dead during world boss fights and I rarely die. But I also see players absolutely obliterate mobs that take me 4-5 seconds to kill. I’ve been jealously admiring their damage while consoling myself with my superior survivability. But the more I play the more I am starting to think that the occasional death is well worth the significant increase to DPS. I am starting to realize that this game’s mechanics give greater weight to damage stats than defensive stats. Does Toughness even matter in this game?

My early impressions of WvW is that the only thing that matters is damage. I’ve played other PvP MMOs where defensive stats were equally weighted with offensive stats. A purely defensive build was extremely hard to kill but was of little threat. In this game it seems that there is no point putting a single point into defensive stats. Again, all about damage.

TLDR: does GW2 reward balanced builds, defensive builds, or is it all about damage?

Maintenance Oils

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The expansion may or may not bring new utility items but that is just speculation at this point. And it doesn’t justify the loss players experienced from having an item completed changed after they had spent time and coin on acquiring them.

ANET’s explanation for changing oils is very specific. It was not the best choice for power DPS builds. Well there are plenty of runes, sigils, and foods that are not the best but some players still manage to make them work.

Also, the best choice is always the most expensive. I like sharpening stones but saved them for specific content and used the less expensive oils during more casual play.

To be clear, I fully realize that this is not really that big of a problem. We always adapt. But I just can’t understand their thinking. There are thousands of items in this game that have almost no value and never get used. Oils—while admittedly not the best—were being used by enough people that they demanded a consistently decent price.

I love the idea of a new support utility but why did it have to come at the expense of the only affordable precision utility?

I understand that online games are always evolving and items often get tweaked. But completely changing what an item does?

“the data showed us that Maintenance Oils were worse than Sharpening Stones for power DPS, so we threw out their concept and repurposed them as the Utility category for support builds”

If your data determined that the Oils were under-performing then buff them. If you wanted to add a new Utility that was geared to the support build then by all means, create a new Utility.

Take another look at your data and you will also see that the price of Oils has plummeted. What a fine indicator of the value the community places on this “repurposed” Utility. Some of us liked them and spent a fair amount to build up a stockpile.

I suspect that most people use Sharpening Stones and so probably didn’t even notice this small change but I happen to be one of the few that used the Oils. If they had changed the +Power boost on Sharpening Stones to +Healing then I bet a whole lot of people would have noticed.

Ascended ring advice

I recently began running fractals and now have enough Pristine Fractal Relics to buy two ascended rings from from the vendor. As you all know, they come with a single infusion slot.

Should I buy those and then infuse + attune them to get two more infusion slots or should I keep running fractals and wait for an infused ring with 2 slots to drop?

Thanks.

Need help...HoT Sylvari Solidarity

in Players Helping Players

raykor.6723

Well, after a few hours of “map chat begging,” I was lucky enough to find someone with a newly 80 Sylvari who had also NOT ever completed the Sylvari Solidarity achievement on any other character on his account. I got lucky.

Please ANET, just make a minor change to this achievement to make it work with any Sylvari regardless of whether or not they have previously completed the achievement. It doesn’t matter to me anymore but I’m sure it would be helpful to other players.

raykor.6723

The Sylvari Solidarity achievement is from Heart of Thorns: Act 1.

If you character is not a Sylvari then it requires that you group up with a Sylvari. That part is easy enough. Plenty of helpful people in my guild and in the game generally.

But according to the wiki, it also requires that that Sylvari has not already completed this achievement. Since HoT has been out for a while, this is proving to be a difficult to find.

While I would love to climb on the soapbox and kitten-and-moan about this ridiculous game design, I prefer to just reach out to the community and maybe there is a fresh lvl 80 Sylvari somewhere in the GW universe that still needs this achievement. If you exist, I need you kind assistance.

I realize this is a year old discussion but as a returning player having just purchased the HoT expansion, this is still a problem. Sure, I can find some friendly people that have Sylvari characters to help me out but evidently the achievement requires that the Sylvari character does NOT already have the achievement. Since HoT has been out for quite a while, that is proving very difficult to find. Please ANET, how about a slight modification to how this achievement works to make it easier for new players?

I found several GW2 item databases out there but they don’t seem to tell you which mob drops whatever item you just searched for. Does such info exist?

Thanks.

I apologize for such a basic question that I’m sure has been asked a lot before, but I couldn’t find the answer.

If I have a weapon sigil on an off-hand weapon that does +x% damage to a certain type of creature, does that extra damage apply to all skills I use or only skills 4 and 5?

Thanks.

Two character slot questions...

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: raykor.6723

raykor.6723

I played for 4 months at release and way back in 2012 we had lots of character slots available. I made 9 characters and I noticed they are still all there but no empty character slots are available. I did some research and learned that the current game only allows for 5 character slots—unless you buy more with gems.

  1. If I delete one of my old 9 characters, will I lose that slot since I am clearly over the current default limit of 5?
  1. If I buy the HoT expansion, will I get a new character slot to try out the new Revenant class?

Thank you!

Help us help you report bots

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: raykor.6723

raykor.6723

Mr. Lewis recently wrote that bot reports have dropped dramatically due to his team’s diligent efforts. I have indeed seen fewer traditional bots so thank you for the good work.

However, anyone who plays this game knows that the bots that remain have adapted by running gathering node teleport hacks. They are everywhere. They are impossible to report because they disappear too quickly. So Mr. Lewis, you might not want to tout too proudly the reduced number of botting reports.

Can you modify the reporting feature so it does not cancel itself when a player is out of sight? This would allow your players to help you report this new strain of bots. Your report count will go back up dramatically and I certainly don’t want to rain on your parade but it is the right move for the long term health of the game.

Salvaging Bug or Bad Luck?

I just completed my regular task of crafting a dozen rares and salvaging them. I got ZERO globs of ectoplasm from twelve rares.

Is this an incredibly bad stroke of RNG luck or is this a new bug. Either way, I’m not at all pleased at having wasted 10 days of gathering work to get ZERO ectos!

What a shame. These two fine individuals were crisscrossing the area I was in for a solid 20 minutes and not even trying to hide their teleport hack. I was hoping there was a way to get a GM’s attention because it would have been ridiculously easy to confirm their behavior and get them banned (although the accounts themselves are likely stolen).

New gear tier.

Are red warning circles really necessary (PvP)?

raykor.6723

I’m not sure what I said that gave you the impression I was talking specifically about 1v1 skirmishes. I simply don’t understand why 60% of our skills require a red warning circle IN ADDITION to the 1-3 second delay and special effect visual clues. Is our class so insanely overpowered that if we were actually able to land the majority of our skills the entire game balance would collapse?

I like the concept of attunement swapping but find it annoying that so many of our traits are designed to strengthen a SINGLE attunement—essentially encouraging us to stay in a single attunement despite the class’s intended playstyle!

Are red warning circles really necessary (PvP)?

in Elementalist

Posted by: raykor.6723

raykor.6723

I switch between scepter/dagger and a staff but no matter which attunement I am in, many of my skills require targeting an area and then on top of that most of those same skills have a delay of several seconds before they go off! Everyone dodges out of them. Burst damage classes do not have any obvious warnings when they are about to hit me for insane damage, why do so many of an ele’s skills have one?

By the way, I have no problem with the red warning circles for siege weapons.

New 80 needs advice on getting gear

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: raykor.6723

raykor.6723

I’ve been level 80 for about two weeks now, in full greens, and looking for advice on how to get better gear. I realize I can just buy it off the TC but I was looking for ways to get it on my own.

I was hoping to craft my stuff but it turns out you need those purple balls of goodness to make rares and those in turn require salvaging two or three rares (depending on luck).

So fine…you need to have several rares to make one new rare (kinda dumb) but then how to get all these rares?

I got one from two weeks of grinding hundreds of random mobs so that doesn’t seem very efficient. I participated in ten or so of the big zone events and only got one rare from the final chest so that’s not very efficient either.

I used to get a nice amount of loot from WvW but I get almost nothing lately. I don’t know if the drop rate was stealth nerfed, a streak of bad luck, or if the drop rate changes at level 80 but WvW doesn’t seem very efficient either.

I’m not really a dungeon grinder but is that the secret? Will I have to grind dungeons? Also, do people mostly not bother with rares and just grind the dungeons for tokens for exotics?

Thanks for the advice.

Support Role = No WvW Loot

in WvW

Posted by: raykor.6723

raykor.6723

I may not have been clear enough. Of course I was still using my damage abilities but with all skills and gear dedicated to support, I wasn’t doing enough damage to get loot credit. ANET created trait trees designed to go all the way to 30 so that people could choose that path; they simply forgot to reward anyone silly enough to try playing that way.

Anyhow, it was short-lived experiment that is over for me.

I have a hard time thinking of even one other MMORPG that DOESN’T require you to run dungeons over and over for the best gear, the best crafting mats, the best recipes, etc.

Finally, a game comes along for those of us that don’t like being forced to run dungeons to “keep up with the neighbors,” and people want to change it to be like every other cookie cutter game.

I don’t mean to be rude, but if you like dungeon running being the center of the best of everything, then go play one of 40 other MMORPGs that are designed for your preference.
