Upcoming Fractal Changes

The drop rates are what they set them to be. There was no “mistake” in the changes made. They took off and nuked it from orbit, and now want us to believe it was an “oopsies” moment.

Just read your reply after posting a similar one myself. Their language really rubbed me the wrong way and I’m hoping they address it. When you consider the potential financial motives behind this drop-rate decision, it’s frankly a disgusting combination. Please clear the air, Anet. It would go a long way with us. Thanks.

A message from John Corpening and John Smith:

We’ve noticed some changes to ascended drop rates that are below what we were expecting.

I’m utterly perplexed by the usage of the words, “noticed” and “expecting”. Is the drop rate not simply a fixed value that one of the developers was instructed to enter? That’s not something you would “notice” later, or something that should generate unexpected results.

Please help us to understand. At the moment I just feel like the usage of this language is an attempt to deflect fault for what was a very poorly received change.

The Dawn Fox [Fox] is a brand new guild looking for ambitious, enthusiastic players of all experience levels.

The Dawn Fox may be a little different than other guilds you’ve seen. Rather than using guild ranks as a strictly hierarchical food chain of authority, we use ranks to distinguish players according to the different House they choose to associate with!

Each house represents a different aspect of the game, such as WvW, sPvP, or challenging PvE encounters. Most houses have a member role and a leader role. Leaders are in charge of coordinating events and on-boarding new initiates.

Just a brief follow up. I guess it is a Comcast issue. They’re having issues in both CT and Boston.

https://downdetector.com/status/comcast-xfinity/map/

I’m not sure that Comcast also having issues proves this is a Comcast issue. The trace routes seem to indicate the Comcast points are being hit successfully and that the failures begin when reaching the Level 3 points. From what I gather the problem is that requests from Comcast users in the Boston and CT areas are put on a path to those points. You can see this in the traceroutes and pandaexpress who used a VPN to change his path to arenanet.

Interesting, last night results were slightly different no loss through comcast, just when reached level 3, this morning comcast very lossy, and level 3. I called level 3 and they said they don’t have any issues in ct at the moment and said to contact provider and let them know and if they have an issue they’ll contact level 3.

What number did you use to contact level 3? I would like to call them also, but could not find a number that seemed appropriate.

From what I’m gathering, the failing Level 3 node(s) aren’t necessarily in CT. Most of the trace routes here are going to Comcast in Boston and then being shipped off to
4.68.71.217 and then fails a few times before reaching 4.59.197.34. According to iptrace.in, these are in California and Texas, respectively.

New armor is fine with me. I understand the community’s apprehension about GW2 becoming a new gear treadmill type game, but at the same time I’m already yearning for some new sweet new gear. I’ve had full exotic for ages, and it was a great achievement that I’m proud of, but I’d like something new to work towards in terms of armor.

Also, considering how easy it is to get armor (be it Exotic or Dungeon), I doubt ANet will make this gear much harder. It might be Aesthetic only, anyway. Like the Legendary equivalent of armor.

Solutions:
A) He’s supposed to be hard, it’s explorable mode. We should aspire all our bosses across all difficulties to be of similar difficulty.
2 and III) We are currently re-working and changing our loot for dungeons. I had previously hoped that it would be in for the next patch, but it requires a lot of tuning and testing, so it might take another patch.

Kholer is what got me hooked on this game and seriously elevated my respect for GW2. As long as the rewards scale accordingly, I fully support making more bosses as challenging and communication-required as Kholer.

An update! By popular demand and because it was a simple numbers change we lowered the net on any systems we felt were too harsh. These are not the last number changes, but this should help a lot an you can expect to see this change in the very next live build which should be in the next few days. We are not currently adding any new systems now or in the foreseeable future. There was an update a little while back that limited oricalcum farming via server and overflow swapping. This update was too harsh on normal players and we will try to increase the supply of these resources again soon. This requires some more number crunching and testing than the other change we made so it might take a bit longer.

Thanks,

Jon

Mr. Peters,

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for allaying some of our concerns regarding the overall philosophy of the ArenaNet regarding the farming playstyle. While I can’t be certain from your post what will be changed regarding karma DR (will the timer be reduced? Removed? Will we be able to reset it again some way? etc.), I’m relieved to hear this is being acknowledged as something that needs to be fixed because it is negatively impacting players who are playing normally.

Needless to say, many questions remain unanswered and until whatever changes come in the the following weeks many of us will continue to have our karma gain significantly reduced. I do not understand the need for this because I must admit I do not understand how botters gaining karma could so negatively impact the gold market, as you described. I assume, however, this is not an arbitrary decision and respectfully defer to your judgement (as if I had a choice =P).

Whatever ArenaNet decides, I respectfully request that they follow suit with how Dungeon rewards were clearly explained. I think that explanation was a model to be emulated because it left very little doubt in the player’s minds regarding the companies philosophy and exactly what the players could for their bottom line rewards.

Thanks.

I think I understand where you are coming from and disagree with your points, but well yeah, I think I’ve ran out of ways to try and explain my line of thinking, we can agree to disagree, I’m sure. Both our points have been made many times over and reinforced, but I don’t think I can think off anything to add that I haven’t said already.

Haha, man, I almost wrote something very similar in my last response to you. I also see where you are coming from, despite the general disagreement. /agreedisagree accepted.

You have answered yourself right there. Tagged the packheart just to get karma reward. Abandoned champ since “its not worth it”, yet still got reward for it. If its not worth it, don’t do it.

“Tagged the packheart”. Also known as… joining the event? I saw it on my map, I ran to it, I did everything I could to help before it ended. there’s nothing exploitative about that. And why would I stay for the completion of Risen Abomination when I’ve already done more than my share of the damage and can no longer earn any rewards for it?

Your solution is that we “just don’t do it”. Does that really seem logical to you? I can help the event and get rewarded for doing so as is reflected by my contribution Medal. But you’re saying that I’ll find out in my NEXT event that I was wrong for contributing and now I should be penalized for the next 30 minutes? Does that honestly seem rational to you? Doesn’t that seem to be delivering mixed messages?

You did highlight a mistake I made in my post, when I said, “beginning to end” I did just mean, “to end”. Of course I run around to events that are already occurring. How else am I supposed to know when they are up? Time them? Why do I feel you’d call that another “hoop”? I look at the map and follow the pings like every other player in the game, that isn’t abuse or exploitation, that’s normal play.

And, in a grand scale of matters, the DR system which makes sure you do not do what stated above.

It quite obviously isn’t.

Man, everything’s really obvious to you, it’s a wonder so many people are confused and upset over something so obvious.

Obviously, I don’t think that the DR aligns with the otherwise abundant philosophy of positive-reinforcement in the game, nor the overarching theme of “play how you want”. If I’m understanding you correctly, you think the karma DR is the intended counterpart to the Medal system – a continued reflection of one’s contribution to the event. I disagree. I think there’s a lot of mixed messages and we need clarification from the company.

It is there to scale your rewards for running hoops around the system which the DE/medal system is not intended for.

Since you seem to know exactly how the DE/medal system is supposed to function, please enlighten me. That’s one of the primary reasons I made this thread.

Exactly what “hoops” am I “running” around the system? My not staying to completion in 3 out of 15 events before I hit the DR? Out of those 3 events, 2 were my leaving Champion Risen Abomination 1:30 before it finished because there is no value in staying. I won’t get loot and in full Berserker’s Exotic, I’ve already contributed more damage to it than many of the individuals there. The third is me joining Packheart defense at the last second for Bronze. There’s nothing abusive, here. The game gave me the medals it thought I deserved based on time and damage.

The game does not stop you mechanically form doing so – it does not lock you to an event and force you to stay there all the time to get rewards. But it does scale your rewards to actual contribution if you try and take advantage of this.

Right, it scales our rewards based on our contribution. These are known as medals. They are functioning as intended.

This is not punishment. Those are game-play mechanics.

I disagree. If we complete too many events in an undefined period of time, irrespective of our contribution (gold, silver, bronze), we are locked into a penalty period of at least 15 and perhaps up to 30 minutes where our rewards are reduced to practically nothing.

How can you honestly call this anything but punishment? The players take an action and as a result of that action we are prevented from receiving the standard rewards. That’s punishment, or a penalty, or whatever you want to call it but it’s not merely “game-play mechanics”.

I am confused as to why people seem to think that there is only one (or only a few) real proper ways to play an MMORPG.

I play for fun. Some people enjoy a sense of accomplishment. If I want to get 100% completion in dungeons, world exploration, then that’s the mountain I choose to climb – but that doesn’t mean that, if I dislike many aspects of a game but find one much more enjoyable than the others, it’s somehow “incorrect” for me to focus on it.

Why should the preference of other players dictate my own preferences?

So while taking into consideration how to correctly balance the game pace, economy, prestige (et al.) for players, attempting to dictate exactly how one is “supposed” to play is a little nonsensical.

Since, you know… game. Fun and stuff.

Exactly. A philosophy of negative reinforcement breeds discontent and frustration, as is being seen all over the forums. I have no problem with ArenaNet steering players towards other content, but the way to do that is by offering incentive – not punishment.

The reason why people are getting DR so easily in Orr is because the DE’s there are almost only those of the wave category for instance Melandru defend, Plinx chain, Tar, Rakkan etc. Because alot of people are lvl 80, the majority will stay in the lvl 80 zone (cursed shore). The thing is with wave DE’s is that they will speed up the faster the wave will get cleared. This results into DE’s that will last shorter then normal, thus speeding up the karma/h ratio.

Solutions could be:
1) Increase in difficulty, not only an increase in mob size, hp, armor but also an increase in siege, tactics and not just blatently running towards the first waypoint and die along the way.

2) Increase the amount of karma/loot given in ratio to a player his lvl, this means that a lvl 80 can get just as much loot/karma in Queensdale as he can in Orr.

3) Increase the spawning time of the DE’s in the current lvl 80 zone.

These are just some of the possible solutions. In my oppinion I would not go for 3, because 15 minutes is already a reasonable time. 1 is probally to much coding to implement in the near future, but option 2 is doable atleast for the karma/gold per event. At the moment you only get ~75% of the karma when completing a DE outside of Orr. Why not increase this into 100% or even 110% to stimulate players going towards other zones.

Strong solutions, thank you for contributing. I actually loved Queensdale and would be thrilled at the opportunity to go back there for the same rewards as higher level zones.

I’m also into #2, I love a challenge. I’ve even come to appreciate having to deal with the relatively strong Risen around every corner in Cursed Shore and Malchors Leap (I’m a squishy glass canon, it’s a constant flight of fight).

And yeah, #3 would just mean more downtime with not much else to do in some of these zones besides fight the local trash mobs. I do it sometimes in between events, but it’s pretty boring. If the time could be increased such that I can pretty much always be doing an event as long as I’m running around the entire zone, still, that might work, but I imagine that would be difficult to time.

Part 2

Where does ArenaNet even say that’s wrong? I’m sorry, I don’t care about the abysmal chance I might get one loot from Champion Risen Abomination, lol. If they wanted me to stay to the end of every event … why not program it like that? All of this is beside the point, anyway, because we still don’t have confirmation from ArenaNet that leaving events before they end triggers the DR, and my personal test did not indicate this.

The point of my long story is that I like to spend hours running events in Cursed Shore. There’s nothing wrong with that. They designed the game this way, and I like it. There’s no reason why after 30 or 40 minutes (I hit the DR last night in 45 minutes, stayed to completion for 13 out of 15 of the events I played) that I should stop getting rewards.

Do you stop getting rewards in a dungeon for doing it too fast? No, of course not, that’s ridiculous. Do you stop getting rewards in WvWvW for being too good? Of course not. It’s all quite ridiculous. Imagine you bought $10 in gems and spent it all “Dungeon Boosters” so you could get the most rewards out of doing your favorite dungeon. 45 minutes into your first dungeon run, 25% before your FIRST booster is even finished, you stop getting rewards for killing anything in the dungeon and will receive no more tokens. Sucks, right? Ridiculous, right? What if I told you, “too bad, stop grinding dungeons, this game isn’t for you, go play WoW, we don’t want you, take a break, nolifer” How would you feel? You didn’t do anything wrong, you didn’t abuse the game. Why are your fellow players demonizing you and your playstyle? Why is the company punishing you? That’s karma DR.

Thankfully that is not the case with dungeons. As we all know we are rewarded for diversifying our actions and completing every path in the dungeon at least once a day. I think this is fabulous system. I was upset for about 5 minutes when I heard they had removed token speed runs, then I found out about this sytem; a system that actually encouraged a mastery of the dungeon. Yes!

So karma DR being this horrible “Dungeon Token” scenario I described is what I believe to be the problem. Right now players are being punished without any clear guidelines or explanation just for doing their favorite thing and/or working towards their favorite goals. Goals ArenaNet created, mind you. Reshaping the game solely around negative reinforcement hurts and frustrates players that have invested themselves financially and emotionally into this game.

If the karma DR exists because ArenaNet doesn’t want players running the same events for hours… well, I think that sucks, to be frank. I can run Dungeons for hours and still get 20 tokens a run, but I can’t do events and get karma? Why can’t events be like dungeons? Why not keep the minimum karma rewards for players that like to replay the content they’re exceptional at, and incentivize them to diversify their actions, just like dungeons. Even if that means reducing the karma level in Cursed Shore from 378 per run to a flat 300 but REMOVING the DR that makes the rewards almost 0, why not do it?

You can’t just have diminished returns. It’s a punishment mentality and is painfully in-congruent with their positive reinforcement style found everywhere else in the game.

Foreword My post was too long so I broke it up into multiple posts. Part 1:

This is a controversial topic for a lot of reasons. Some people hate to see a good thing spoiled by the abuse of a few. Some feel passionately that finding the most efficient path to reach their goals is the definition of abuse. Some feel that ArenaNet has created a game that does not require grinding (or their definition of it), and therefore those players should simply find another game. There’s a lot of heated gray area that can be attributed to semantics and lack of clear definition from ArenaNet.

Here’s a personal example:

I seek the Legendary Staff, the Bifrost. I realized this was an absolutely tremendous undertaking, and the most daunting aspect would likely be the karma cost (but it might end up being the gold cost).

Something I want to be clear on: I’ve never been a grinder. One of the things that drew me into Guild Wars 2 was their mission of providing enough diverse and exciting content that still rewards the player so they may meet their goals without grinding. Love it. I’ve played nearly 2 dozen MMOs since The Realm Online and this is the most exciting thing I’ve seen in the industry since 1998.

On the whole, Guild Wars 2 has delivered. I’ve done the WvW, I’ve done many of the dungeons, I’ve played the discovery in crafting as I leveled 3 professions to 400, I’ve explored and found relatively secret achievements, and I’m sitting at 70% map completion (I really don’t care for the snowy zones too much, so taking a break). It’s been a blast. The best part is that the combat is actually fun and engaging, something I’ve been personally yearning for for years.

Now enter the Bifrost. I knew I wanted this thing, badly… but I’m not a grinder. But that’s okay, right? Because Guild Wars 2 has enough content to let me run around and have fun and do all sorts of exciting things and still earn it without repeating the same content over and over, right?

Unfortunately, not. I examined every aspect of the game and there is simply no way to achieve these items without intense repetition of content. That can be PvP, that can be lower level zone Dynamic Events, that can be world bosses, but not matter how you cut it you WILL be repeating a lot of content. I was kind of upset. I didn’t want to grind but I wanted this stuff. Age old dilemma I guess, how much is that carrot worth it to you? I decided to give it a shot and head to Cursed Shore to see how bad it really was before making my decision. That’s the place with the best karma and the most players my level so it’s likely the best place to go.

Turns out it’s awesome. I mean, I’m making friends, I’m mastering the events, I’m getting the best loot I’ve ever gotten, I’m getting exponentially better at my class, learning where and why to relocate my traits, and most importantly I’m getting tons of karma. Guild Wars 2 really did deliver, they designed a fun way for me to meet the loftiest of goals. I was in love.

So now you may understand why I was heartbroken when this ripped away from me without explanation. I wasn’t abusing the system. I mean, wouldn’t always complete the events – but why should I? The game showed me that a minimum contribution of damage and/or time was sufficient to earn a gold contribution, not staying until completion. That was never a requirement in any of the hundreds and hundreds of events I’d done.

I think people need to be honest about something though. How quickly are they clearing the DEs? Do they actually complete the events, or just hit the mob enough to secure a bronze /silver / gold and then move on? I’ve never been hit by DR, and I stick with the event from start to end.

There are accounts of players hitting the DR without leaving an event early. More importantly, though, no where has ArenaNet said it was wrong to leave an event early. If that was the case they would’ve coded it to only award gold after a player stays until the end of the event, rather than retroactively implementing a punishment system without explaining why.

I truly don’t understand why or how people can defend this? And, yes.. it seems like you get hit harder the more magic find you have.

For me at least, it’s not defending it. I am simply stating I have not experienced it, and every time I ask someone to show me a video of an example, they don’t answer. So, I understandably have a hard time believing that people being affected a truly playing “normally”.

Prove me wrong.

I’m sorry that the outcry across the forums and numerous examples aren’t enough evidence for you. I’m not sure what motivates your disbelief in your fellow players. I speculate that the reason you have not received photo or video evidence is because someone who is dealing with the frustration of this issue is likely not in the mood to go out of his or her way for someone with your attitude. Moreover, the developers have access to the DR logic, database and logs, which combined with detailed user accounts is likely enough information to work with.

I respectfully request that we keep this thread to it’s original purpose and avoid potentially derailing posts that are accusing players of lying or abusing the game.

Its fine redirecting people to this thread from ones closed/deleted or whatever about the DR system in the dynamic event subforum, but not having a developer or any official Arenanet response is pretty heartbreaking

You’re not alone. For what it’s worth, I’m confident that rerouting everyone here is the first step towards getting an official response and then solution to this problem. Hang in there.

Karma boosters not working

A large portion of the community doesn’t understand

I knew from the start that grind achievers would be heavily disappointed by GW2, and look, one month passes, and you have a swarm of them complaining on the forums every time a dungeon gets made more difficult or reward farming is prevented.

GW2 is a game aimed at explorers, socializers, performance achievers and competitive killers. It was never meant for grief killers or grinding achievers.

We can argue all day about who GW2 was designed for and why we think so, but the fact is there is strong encouragement for and against grinding in this game. It’s not at all as black and white as you portray it.

Everyone,

Thank you so much for your contribution to the thread. I will parse this thread today and add questions to my original post for simplicities sake. Please continue posting your questions and concerns as new replies in this thread.

I don’t think I need to tell any of you here that this is a very important matter. ArenaNet is a fantastic company with outstanding talent and vision, but they can’t do it all themselves. They need us, the players, to be clear and honest about how much this is hurting us.

We are not okay with a system that punishes the most dedicated and tenacious players, a system that forces us to ignore our outstanding qualities and move through the world at the same pace as the listless. These are false shackles that I cannot believe represents the superb vision for Guild Wars 2.

I see my frustration and sense of betrayal reflected in countless posts on every forum. We fell in love with this game, and the spectacular vision ArenaNet presented. A game and vision with so much greatness and promise of playing how you want to play. We let ourselves become lost in this promise and this beautiful world and our passion for our goals – and all for good reason, ArenaNet has created something irrefutably worthwhile.

Thank you, ArenaNet, for giving this matter the attention it deserves. You have my continued admiration and patronage.

Legendary Seekers Punished

The lack of response only says one thing: Working as intended.

(time = progress, not arbitrary limitations).

Yeah, I fear you’re right. Arbitrary is also a key word here. ArenaNet is forcing me to play in a way completely unnatural way – why? Why do they insist on dictating how I play?

Why? If you become excellent at completing dungeons they don’t stop rewarding you for fighting in dungeons after 20 minutes. If you become a stellar WvW or structured PvP player they don’t stop giving you rewards after 20 minutes. Why punish event players? Couple this with how much this amplifies the already monstrous amount of time it takes for a legendary and I just want to quit.

Why does the game only let me play for 20 minutes?

I’ve played nearly every part of this game and have yet to hit any form of DR. You guys are trying to farm. GW2 isn’t a farming game. Thus, there is DR. If you don’t like it, Pandas await you.

Divisive an dismissive, how helpful. If GW2 isn’t a farming game why do the requirements for end game items require a tremendous repetition of content?

People act like ArenaNet has given us this game that was somehow designed to be free of the need to farm and grind and anyone who tries to do so is at fault. They haven’t, and we’re not. Most of the people who take this nasty position simply don’t want to acquire the content in question or are satisfied that everyone is being forced to slow down to the same speed as the people who don’t give a hoot.

Yes, DR totally needs a new thread with the 2 ones that are on the front page of this very forum at the very moment, followed closely by the other 2 that popped up today.

DR will not hit you if you do not repeat the same events, move along the zone, fight mobs other then the ones spawned by the event and generally do something else then bouncing between in progress DRs.

sanadin

I completed 15 events in Orr in 49 minutes and began hitting the DR. I stayed for the duration of every event. There is nothing abnormal about my play.

That means that you spent 3.2 minutes on one event on average. Sorry, no. Cursed Shore is packed full of events, but its not that packed.

Yeah, I have a correction. The only 3 events out of 15 I didn’t stay for the entirety of were Champion Risen Abomination (because that’s horrendously boring and pointless to me) and packheart (bronze) for AEing a group as I was walking by. With those 3 exceptions (2 abom, 1 packheart) I completed everything in full.

I’m not sure why you are so certain that I’m lying, or wrong. Hitting this many events in the northern zone isn’t hard at all. This is the slowest run I’ve done in days. I did grenth, then cycled through Penitent, Shelter’s, Plinx, Tars, Packheart, Contenders, Broodmother and Rakkan – I didn’t even do Wizard, Spider or Grav. I could have easily doubled the amount of events in this period of time if I was trying.

Remember – Rakkan and Contenders are 2 events each, and Plinx is 4. This is all normal play.

@ANet: Why have DR for Karma and Rewards?

sanadin.8317

There are thousands of us looking for answers to these questions. There has been a ton of confusion and frustration for the players who play for karma related rewards since yesterday’s patch, which had no mention of this massive change. Just looking at all the anger and confusion on the forums (both official and non-official) as well as the sub-reddit, I’m dumbfounded as to why ArenaNet hasn’t communicated with us. I sincerely hope this question will be answered.

Karma boosters not working

They changed DR as of yesterday’s patch. No notice was given in the patch notes and no statement has been made by the company since. It’s incredibly unprofessional and there are thousands of players who are hurt and frustrated by this action. Hopefully A-net will step up and at least start explaining the rationale.

A large portion of the community doesn’t understand because they haven’t exhausted the content or don’t care about karma related items or think this only hurts bots. It’s not hurting bots at all, just players. Some of the most dedicated players and patrons Anet has.

Why are people who like to do the event chains being punished? Not only do I enjoy this play-style, these events are the only reasonable way to achieve the karma necessary for a legendary.

I ran a little experiment and saved all the photos as evidence. 13 DEs in a row, as fast as possible, NO DR ON KARMA.

Now.. this was well over a week ago, and I have read above that the DR took effect in the latest patch. I do not know if this is true or not, I will test it asap

I would sometimes hit the karma DR multiple times in on hour, and other times not hit it once in an hour. Always taking the same path at different speeds. I was netting 12-14k karma per hour.

As of the latest patch this is impossible due to the DR being un-resettable and karma boosters are worthless. The effective time to acquire a legendary has been lengthened significantly. Grinders/farmers are being punished for their playstyle rather than encouraged to play differently. Right now we have no information from Arenanet on their goals with this decision, only speculation.

Regarding Grenth, I can’t say. I’ve only done it 5 times with 160%+ MF and never even gotten a yellow.

You should also add the fact that DR is account bound, so playing across multiple characters and doing the same events or dungeons will also cause you to hit diminishing returns.

I know this is the design for dungeons – but is it confirmed that this affects karma and events?

The other answers you are looking for have been posted on these forums about one hundred times. Again, a simple forums search would show you that.

There is no need for yet another post about the DR system. Use one of the threads that have already been made!

Please, please read my post. This is not about dungeons, this is about karma. Karma DR changed in yesterday’s patch.
