Amazing post by HHR LostProphet.

Another issue I feel is within the spirit of his post, is universal profession design and balance. Each game format has very different game-play mechanics and goals, yet the professions share the same skills between every format and balance patches are for the most part universal.

Building around 5v5 PvP scenarios and trying to throw it into large scale combat (open world PvE, WvW) and dungeons has created a vast multitude of issues in those areas.

I don’t think each part of the game has different gameplay mechanics, or atleast, it shouldn’t have. Let’s look at a skilled opponent in PvP. He is using all his skills and pressuring you to get the upper hand. He would be the perfect PvE boss. Yet the bosses are slow, have almost no real mechanics and a giant health pool to make up for that. I think that could be the greatest improvement in GW2, if PvE bosses would be hard to deal with, if they would attack fast and hard, if they would use invuln, blocks, dodges and conditions and if they would have only a small health pool. The fights would be over faster but way more challenging. If all mobs in PvE would behave somewhat intelligent, it would feel more like playing in PvP than in the current PvE.

Oh... my ... Wow! Great Job Anet!

I just made a new char to check this out. Human. I can say that I am sure this is as the OP says. The scene seems longer, a bit different and not only that they seem to have added scenes to reflect which PS (lvl 10) you have chosen.

I chose the common (key farmers friend :P) and they added an extra scene that I have not seen before. After this guy I’m gonna check all races with all the different PS lvl 10 options just to see all the new scenes – enjoy everyone!

Did you ever watched the cutscene before? Because I did and I’ve seen nothing that I haven’t seen before.

What doesn’t make sense is that after the battle is over, they’re trying to heal an ethereal manifestation that for some unknown reason breaths.

Why does a manifestation of magic and ether breath? Why do they tend the avatar instead of the Pale Tree herself?

It makes perfect sense for Caithe and Trahearne to go down through the portal (the nameless wardens die up there, I noticed, hah!) since the avatar is nothing but that: an avatar. Something that is irrelevant to the wellbeing of the Pale Tree, something that didn’t even exist before the Nightmare Court’s existence.

You’re right that they should heal the tree, not the avatar. But I can recall the avatar saying something like “I can feel you now”, which could mean that the avatar is in fact a person with a direct uplink to the tree/dream. The uplink gets interrupted or atleast disturbet during the fight. So now this avatar loses it’s connection to the tree.

Another “play the way you want, so long as it’s the way I want”, thread.

only reason people can flip, is because someone is posts an item for less than it would sell for. It’s their right to sell it for half the price it’s worth, it’s someone else’s right to buy it and sell it for more, if it’s possible to sell for.

btw, I consider playing the tp, playing the game. I enjoy looking at whats selling cheap, but normally would sell higher. What seems to be increasing/decreasing in price.

I enjoy this. I also like playing gw2, and I love taking a break from killing things/exploring to play the tp. It’s just another game mode to GW2…..It doesn’t really affect your game play, you know. Them having lots of gold, doesn’t affect you. Tbf, they don’t get from thin air, unlike dungeons/farming. Their gold comes from other players, these other players don’t have to use the tp.

What do you play? Do you play the Stock Exchange simulator? Last time I checked this game was named GuildWars2. You seriously don’t have to play a MMO if the only thing you want to do is flipping the traiding post. If you want to play GW2, go ahead and play. But playing the trading post can’t be considered playing GW2.

The problem with new content, and new land to explore is that we’d grind it out in a week, figure out that best stuff to kill, and then go back to complaining about how bored we are, and why isn’t anet expanding the game already. We don’t use up 80% of the map as it is, why should they open up more of it, just for us to ignore it after we’re done with it.

If they would give events a proper reward, you could go out and look for the eventchain yo like the most and do it. And once you’re bored of this particular eventchain, you could go to the next eventchain. You would actually have a reason to go to maps like Snowden Drifts or Timperline Falls.

Your suggestions of altering the combat of GW2 wont fix the problem because there is no problem with the combat system, as I’ve said before.
If you want a less melee-dependent “meta”, you should ask ANet for bosses who require different roles, so that some players can attack the bosses from range without screwing the players in melee range.

You say there’s no problem that exists. The way I see it, the combat is fairly twitch/skill based and can have various flavors and approaches to gain success, even if not all of them are optimal. None of that is a problem. The problem is the encounters themselves. No, not the encounters being broken or that encounters favor damage. I’m mainly talking about the variety in the encounters. Most of them are rather formulaic and predictable. Once you learn them, it becomes merely a script.

So scripting variety in new encounters….it’s not that hard since apparently you’ve got programming wizards on the forums that think their ideas are amazing and easy to implement. But the combat system isn’t free of fault either. Others touched on the system incentivizing close range and I think that hamstrings how encounters will be scripted. You can introduce encounters that are punishing to melee or neutralizes some of zerker stat strategies but at the end of the day, the meta decides how to destroy an encounter quickly and it’s likely going to be very similar to the approach now because the system incentivizes melee huddles.

Melee should incentivize itself rather than the system gravitating strategies around it.

There is no problem with the melee – range split because the combat system doesn’t encourage you to melee, it encourages you to stick together. Since melee weapons are stronger than ranged weapons and since it’s not impossible to melee the most bosses, melee will always be the prefered way to fight encounters.

Ranger still has the worst party utility.

I’m assuming you’re doing pvp/wvw only.

PvE wise the ranger got some of the better party utilities in the game.

Shhh the noobs are not supposed to know that. If they did, rangers would suddenly be welcome in pug parties without any “reservations”….

But since it’s not true and after 2 years everyone knows better, we don’t have that problem.

Guess three times which group that comment put you in.

Like I’ve said in the past… when Rangers go a third year without a single positive thread in the WvW or PvP forums, we’ll know who to blame.

Positive thread – not needed.
QQ thread is what you want. Nobody makes “positive” threads. its QQ or nothing.

Honestly, I for myself, am on these forums to show of flaws, not to praise ANet for what they’ve done right.

PSA: How Farming Works

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: HHR LostProphet.4801

HHR LostProphet.4801

“Objectively, farming is making mats, weapons, and gear more affordable to the average player’s wallet.”

It’s also helpfully diminishing the value of the goods your more likely to find (as they can be farmed). And I haven’t seen precursors get more affordable? Or Gems get cheaper to purchase? I used to be able to buy an extra bank expansion slot for 14G if I recall (my first one). How much more affordable is it now for me to buy, hmmm? I mean objectively speaking.

Common things, like gems, become more expensive as more gold drips into the economy. Selling items you’ve farmed however destroys gold.
Rare things, like precursors, get more expensive as more players have a lot of gold.

So if someone farms a lot of gold, prices of common goods drop while prices of rare good rise. But don’t worry, there already so many players out there who have way more gold than everyone else so precursor prices wont rise that much.

Worry not! You can just spend enormeous amounts of money on BLC keys to get one of those consumables and you’ll never have to face a challenge again! You just need someone else to do it for you!
Getting better yourself is outdated, let someone else do the hard work!”

Thank you ANet for being that honest to us!

Every event should be tied into an eventchain. At the end of a chain, you’ll get a reward based on the chained events you’ve done. Worldbosses should be no thing you could farm, they should be the “great finale” of a huge eventchain and offer special loot.
Furthermore, lots of new events should be implemented, so there can be multiple “layers” of eventchain active at one time in one area. It would be also nice to have some cross-map events. Each event should also offer better loot based on the time you spent to complete it.

This is what the Ranger pets should be like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU9H7zaD6zs

  • no damage output
  • control skills (knockdown, knockback, stun, daze, etc)
  • conditions (cripple, immobilize, vulnerability, poison, etc)
  • boons (regeneration, swiftness, protection, stability, etc)
  • fields (fire, water, smoke, lightning, etc)
  • finishers (blast, leap, projectile)
  • boon removal
  • condition cleanse
  • movement skills (leap, teleport, rush/charge)
  • self-preservation (invulnerability, reflect, block)

There is plenty of variation to make an endless amount of useful pets. Just get rid of the damage output.

Then, add a Grandmaster Beastmastery trait that takes 50% power, precision and ferocity away from the Ranger and gives it to the pet. The pet also gains passive health regeneration and 10000 max health.

I want to tame Trahearne so badly. I would get him killed all the time.

I’ve played this game far too long to ignore the problems the game has. And as closer I look as more problems I notice. One could say that I should take a break from GW2 and that might be true but that doesn’t fix the problems I’ve found. GW2 is a great game for someone who has just started playing. But it’s not that great anymore for me. It still got its strenghts; that’s why I’m still playing. But it also got weaknesses, and rather than fixing those weaknesses I find ANet pushing onwards creating even more flaws.
We’ll see what the first expansion will hold, the expansions for GW1 did change a lot and improved the weaknesses GW1 had at the beginning.

Edit: And what Nannernut said basically. Nice too hear that the devs still love their game, atleast Gaile doesn’t grow tired of telling us how exciting everything is, but some changes, or rather some less changes (looking at you NPE), would also do the trick of convincing me that this game is still worth my time.

but there is no way you have the numbers to claim that the players think so, from a psychological perspective.

You’re adorable.

Economists have ways to measure how much your parents love you and the scariest part of all… it works.

His conclusions are wrong but his reasons are not. Atleast from a casual customer perspective. You’re right if you say that the economy isn’t flawed. But that doesn’t mean that it’s optimal. Let’s take the precursors as example. The economy is balanced, precursors are in demand, thus they’re expensive. The problem now is that there is a minority of players that are extremely wealthy. The supply of precursors on the TP is smaller than the demand for it from such wealthy players. That’s the reason why they are so astronomical expensive. There are enough players that can afford a precursor for that price, yet there are myriad more players that can’t afford that.

So as conclusion, yes, the economy is balanced. But it’s not fair, it leaves the possibility for a small amount of players to dictate the prices for the majority of players and the possibility to gain wealth with only the economy itself as limit.

There are many ways for upward mobility in the this game and even the casual player can farm for their legendary as many have already claimed in various threads. Also, precursor prices have nothing to do with the rich manipulating them. You’re completely forgetting about the velocity of the sales.

I haven’t said they’re manipulating them. I said they’re buying them because they want them. I talked exactly about the velocity of such items: The velocity is too high. Thus the price stabilizes itself at a very high rate, too high for most players to be precise. The problem is not the economy itself but the possiblity to grow extremely wealthy in a short period of time. The reward-values of the various ways to earn gold are disconnected, despite they do require the same amount of time and skill.

What are Rangers for?

Posted by: HHR LostProphet.4801

HHR LostProphet.4801

…you’re a bad ranger…
…you’re a bad ranger…

Stop it, immediately! The ranger is subpar to the warrior. Period. That doesn’t mean that the warrior always wins or that a selfclaimed proplayer is able to win the most fights as ranger vs. warriors. But it means that the warrior has to invest less skill and less effort to beat a ranger than a ranger has to invest to beat a warrior.

So your logic is “Warrior is easier to play than ranger therefore warrior is better than ranger.”, by that logic warrior is the best profession in the game because of how simple it is to play at a competent level. Got it.

Even a ranger played to its fullest potential can’t outshine the warrior who’s considered to have a cap you can’t go beyond statwise, because the warrior starts at higher levels statwise, with no flaws. The ranger on the other side starts way lower, further hindered by flaws such as relying on an AI wich ArenaNet repeatedly fails to fix.
And please don’t consider working against the flaws of a class as skillfull since you wont get anything just by compensating the lacks of the ranger.
If you invest a set amount of time to master one specific class, I can assure you, that you will be better with any other class than the ranger.

While I agree that the level-up rewards shift the focus to the leveling, I’m still highly concerned about the changes.

For me it’s pretty obvious that the economy is the reason why there are no engaging rewards in the open world.
John Smith doesn’t grow tired of telling us that increasing the rewards in the open world would knock the economy out of balance. And while John Smith says that the economy works fine, and I think it does from an economist standpoint, I think the economy is not working fine from the players perspective if it hinders the devs to put meaningful reward into the game.

So they wont do anything about the 1 silver you get from completing events or the traiding post flipping, which can offer margins that are completely out of line with the rewards obtainable through “normal” gameplay.

ArenaNet's attitude

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: HHR LostProphet.4801

HHR LostProphet.4801

I’m questioning the attitude the ArenaNet staff is showing off. They accept flaws for the sake of change. They improve aspects without making sure it wont hinder other aspects. We can see that everywhere in the game. They want to do the Living Story, so the game feels alive and changing but they discount dungeons and PvP for doing so. They implement the Megaservers and streamline the worldbosses in order to do so. They implement the wardrobe and kill off town clothes doing so.
They are not adding first-person view or rework the AI because it would take too much time and wouldn’t progress the game as much as new half-baked content would.
All changes look like the staff is too small. Maybe they can’t do something about that but I question their attitude to progress at any price. If their staff is that small, they should first of all make sure that the quality isn’t suffering. Right now it is.

Old OP:

I notice ever so often that the ArenaNet staff uses flawed arguments.
One example are the NPE changes. They said the game losing new players becasue they don’t get it, they say they lost more than 10000 players due to this. They said that the NPE changes got developed based on a survey filled by those players.

And I’m just sitting here asking myself why they didn’t even bother to ask the 3 million players they claim to have.

Another example is the first-person camera. I would understand, eventhough I wouldn’t agree with them, if they would say that a first-person camera is just a minor tweak and therefore pretty far down on the to-do list.
Instead they say that they don’t want to implement the first-person camera because they want the player to be able to see their characters.
If that’s so important for ANet, why is stacking still possible?
Is that (see attachment) the intended way of keeping track of your character?

I have no problem with them making decisions I can’t agree with as long as they are honest why they’ve made them. And I don’t have the feeling that they are sometimes.

My favorite response! “You’re dissatisfied so clearly you’re a whiny kitten who deserves nothing!”

Fact is that drop rates for these items are so extraordinarily low that you could spend your entire play time in a day trying to get one to no avail; literally zero progress toward the goal. It’s not like you got some tokens, and it takes a lot of those tokens to get the item, so eventually you will get enough tokens. You made no progress toward the goal, and theoretically, this could happen every time you play.

God forbid somebody expect to get tangible results from sinking hours of their time into something they don’t even have to be doing! I mean it’s not like Anet has a vested interested in people continuing to play the game.

Something ticked, the head and founder of the company decided to grace the community with a letter that tried to explain the situation. Instead of showing willingness to improve, the rhetoric suggested a total negligence and denial, duplicating the well-known interview political talk. Something inside the company was shaken though and the community has seen a sudden wake-up of few developers. One of them for example, decided to hop into a 4-month-old topic with concerns about a recently implemented system and acknowledge the community he would look into it again. How splendid… In another topic, someone else came back and reassured the community, that he would talk to them again. Would things finally come to normal…?

The dev activities look more like “A letter from the boss, we have to participate more in the forums.”. But, oh well, time will show. If the dev activity drops back to what we’re used to, they have been told to talk to us, rather than being here on voluntary basis.

Now with the new patch (I haven’t seen them though), we are getting new armors. We already got an outfit (eventhough it’s ugly) and we got a PvP armor which aren’t in the gemstore.
So it seems like ANet is changing their course, it seems like they’ve tackled one of the biggest concern I had with the game; that we don’t get nice skins that are obtainable in game rather than in the gem store.

I want to say thank you for that.

Now I’m not the kind of optimist who’s claiming that everything will change from now on. But I can atleast raise my hopes again that some of the glaring issues like the redundance of normal PvE maps get tackled also.

You’ve gotta be joking…. The 3 skill on axe alone maintains perma weakness on a target, which hurts direct damage quite significantly, not to mention it also applies 3s of chill making it very easy to get in and out of Melee range to land split blades, AND it increases their CDs by 66%, this also affects mobs in PvE but I’d doubt you’d know that cause damage is all that matters.

Also, that word Kiting, I don’t think you know what it means, by definition Melee weapons wouldn’t be good at, nor would they WANT to kite, they’d wanna have a snare or a leap or both so they can keep up with the guy kiting them sure, but they wouldn’t want to actually kite.

And? You wont win a fight with applying weakness. Most weapons will still deal more damage, even with weakness applied. And 3 secs. chill? So their cooldown will be at 5 secs instead of 3? Yeah, looks pretty OP… not. This is the one and only condition you would want to remove if you’re playing vs. a MH axe ranger.
There is just the bleed as damaging condition, which you probably wont apply all 5 bleeds onto an enemy. Also, the damage isn’t high enugh whatsoever to use offensive sigils. And yeah, damage is all that matters for a weapon who is neither defensive nor supportive.
It’s not like I want to say MH axe is unusable, I’ve seen some rangers killing opponents with the axe. But it’s by far the weakest weapon aviable to the ranger

So you want to tell me that you’re one of the god chosen pro players who know what the ranger is capable of? And every other casual or average player is not allowed to raise any critisism?
If you would spend as much time with any other class as you did with the ranger, you would come out ahead of what the ranger is capable of. Just because you can beat others doesn’t mean the ranger is at a good spot. The average determines if a class is balanced or not. And the average of the ranger is definitely lower than any other class.

Albeit some incompentent and blatantly ignorant players that stubbornly refuse to play the class as intended nor listen to advice, still keeps saying pet is one big issue.

^ That is blatant ignorance. Claiming to know how the class is meant to be played.

People need to be more realistic about Anets policies. You have to realize that Anet has technically talked about things in development and its been a mistake imo.

Precursor crafting is something that has been development for far too long, mainly because other systems have been put in place and some changed, like the rewards system. This is why precursor crafting was held back in the april patch from what I understand.

I think this is another problem I foresee with Anet, especially when I hear about “bigger projects” in the background. How can you develop big features or content alongside a game that is constantly changing in terms of features? Lots of revamps have already happened to the game in terms on systems like achievments/rewards/crafting/trait system.

The employees of Riot always talk about what’s in development. No details tho’, but they are able to keep the interest of the players. The problem is that if a Riot employee says that something is being worked on, he can assure that it is actually being worked on. If ANet talks about things like precursor crafting, it’s more like “we plan to do this”.

I feel like they should give us the option of deciding our dialogue if someone important ever asks “What’ve you been doing?” or “Why aren’t you helping the pact?”

Maybe some options like:
1. “The Pact’s been busy, but I was given a vacation after leading the assault on Zhaitan. Sadly, I just couldn’t sit still.”
2. “The Pact can handle itself. I prefer adventuring, so I decided to take a leave. Trahaerne approved.”
3. “Um… Haha… Well, y’know… I kinda got bored after Zhaitan left. There just wasn’t enough people would bother asking me to do.”

I want the dialogue option:
“You know, now that you’re asking, I don’t fricking know. I wanted to take a short break, got involved with some people and now they’re following me like puppies…
But I will go back to the pact immediately to gather a group of elite fighters to repel Mordremoth and to lead the pact to victory once again.”

Remove FGS 4(PVE): Gamebreaking

in Profession Balance

HHR LostProphet.4801

Not to say FGS is balanced but since when is PvE balanced in any way? Fights get trivialized by single skills (Guardian wall as example), the mob AI is way too poor, which enables stacking, conditions are useless most of the time, no need for any defense outside of the support capabilities the guardian offers while still playing full berzerker.
So, ofcourse, FGS is broken. But so is the whole PvE.

Ah alright. Yea I can see why you’re speculating who this entity is, but it probably is Mordremoth as that would be the most obvious and ANet is not known for very strong story thusfar with this game. It’s probably not as deep as people want it to be.

Might be the major reason people doing speculations, because everything is clear. No it’s not!

Death-picture-entity (dpe) might have influenced her with speaking to her, but the Pale Tree did either. She wanted to set both against each other (which probably wasn’t the case or balanced).

If we define dpe as Mordremoth, then she didn’t work for him and if you want to set two enemies against each other without having too much trouble, then you care for equal power (easier for yourself if you are against both).

Mord is the most obvious, because he is put into your sight like E while having a vote between E(llen Kiel) and E(von Gnashblade). I try to figure out the function of the dragons between 3 possibilities, but still need some informations.

I stay at my position saying a) Mordremoth maybe was in her mind, but didn’t corrupt her b) the Pale Tree lies intentionally (might be a good reason, but he lies) and c) she was her own master (and there are not many in Tyria). Everything gets a little bit reduced with the point that all in Tyria are heavily underpowered (even ED) and need support to get things changed. She worked together with some groups and maybe there is a leader, but even this one is underpowered in regards towards the other two fighting sides.

The story is great, but the representation makes problem and a lot things that are theoretical written, but probably not implemented.

Well, Scarlet did awake a dragon and she knew she was going to wake one. So the question has to be asked: Who would benefit from the awakening of a dragon?
The only possible answer I know is that the dragon (probably Mordremoth) was the one who forced her to disturb the Ley Lines. I don’t think the Pale Tree was lying simply because that wouldn’t fit into the (not thrilling) storywriting of ANet.

My problem with Eternal Alchemy

in Lore

HHR LostProphet.4801

I think the problem for a lot of people though is that this isn’t humans or norn or charr discovering that what they previously knew is part of something larger, this is Asura knowing everything and all of the other races having some reductive simplistic understanding of the world that is wrong. At least for me that is the problem, you can’t have equality between races when one race is the designated ‘we know everything/figure everything out’ race. You can argue that each race brings something unique to the collective, but the Asuras involvement has become ridiculously deus ex machina, as other people consistently point out.

Well, the only thing the Eternal Alchemy is really saying is that everything can be declared and everything has a purpose. One could say that it’s the same as the laws of nature for our world. The humans believe in their gods which represent the 6 spheres we saw. So you could argue that the gods have indeed created the world or atleast were involved in the creation. You just have to look at the gods from a more abstract point of view. They’re no entities but a part of a larger entities which also act as forces of nature.

lvl 80 gear

in Ranger

Posted by: HHR LostProphet.4801

HHR LostProphet.4801

General rule really is zerkers = pve

Why do you think zerker gear is only for PvE? I use it in WvW too and it’s pretty effective. It’s not as competitive as, lets say celestial gear, but it’s fun. As for PvE: I’ve never used anything else than zerker gear and I’m doing fine (except maybe high lvl. fractals). But the LS is completely doable with zerker gear.

So, in conclusion, zerker gear is the first thing you want to have as lvl. 80.

Stop BLK Farm & fix Keys/Chests!

HHR LostProphet.4801

Please remove the Black Lion Key Farm

There has been a ton of commotion about the possible removal of the BLK farm (aka, moving the key to level 20 instead of 10.) Please do so, for the following reasons:

  • The key farm takes you out of the game. You literally have to log out every 20 minutes just to do this farm.

Relogging to other characters does also take me out of the game.
DELETE ALL TOONS NAUUU

  • It is extremely repetitive! You are doing the same 15 minutes of content a million times, running the same exact route, and everything. It is horribly boring.

Gold grinding says hello. Do you do dungeons every day? I do to get some gold. And it’s repetitive. Just like key farming. Maybe the devs should fix the way of acquiring gold first before they fix the way of acquiring keys.

  • It is almost 100% a waste of time, as you need to spend 10 hours farming for maybe 1 weapon.

That’s not the fault of key farming.

  • It inflates the number of Keys in the game by quite a bit.

Gold farming inflates the amount of gold in the game. Everything gets more expensive.
REMOVE GOLD NAUUUU

  • It literally forces you to erase progress on a character, use up a character slot, and put effort into this exploit. (Yeah, I would call it an exploit, essentially.)

It’s not an exploit.

That’s not to say that I’m completely against removing key farming.
I just hate people trying to sustain their opinion with flawed facts.

Key farming isn’t optimal but neither is the acquisition of weapon skins locked behind the BLCs. There should be a way of – slowly – acquiring them simply through playing the game. Ther should be an option to get them quicker through gems.

The TP, a "philosophical" question.

And it should be relevant to ANet since monopolies are always bad and becuase ANet should try to balance the game. The traiding post now is like the warrior was in PvP: dominating. One could argue that all the players should stop whining and should play warriors instead. But that’s neither balanced nor fun.

There is no monopoly in play. ArenaNet cannot attempt to balance players’ subjective decisions to trade items with objective rewards from content. It just isn’t possible. That’d be like ArenaNet saying “Sorry HHR, but you enjoy PvE too much so we’re going to force you to play more PvP from now on”.

I can name you one already: precursors. The supply of precursors is that low that the demand from player who have gained extreme wealth is higher than the actual supply. If those player wouldn’t exsist, the price would be lower. The reason why a Lamborghini is that expensive is because there are enough people out there who have the money to buy it. Otherwise the price would be lower.
And I don’t want ANet to say “Sorry, you’re enjoying traiding too much, thus we have to stop it entirely.”. I want them to say “We appreciate that you enjoy traiding so much but we have to balance the game, so you can, once you get bored of the TP, go to other gamemodes without losing half of your income.”. Or “We appreciate that you enjoy traiding so much but there are items that should keep some prestige and if you’re able to afford one of those items every month then there is something odd.”.
