+25% movement speed ideas!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

The +25 is for out of combat travel. Limiting our in combat effectiveness for an out of combat perk is bad game design and should be scuttled.

Luckily players can swap parts of their build before they enter combat.

The fact that a clunky work around exists does not negate the fact that it is bad design.

It’s not bad design because you don’t like it.

It’s not good design because you roll over for it, either.
I’m not willing to accept “perfect imbalance” on this one, and no one with game design experience should accept it.

There should be one, standardized way to obtain an out of combat movement speed bonus. The Enrichment slot idea is actually pretty excellent for it. Right now, it serves very little purpose and exists and an artifact of the older Ascended trinkets. I’m willing to agree that +25% might be a bit much for that slot, but even a +15% does wonders for the otherwise glacial pace that characters walk without it. It was a fault from the very beginning that was never corrected properly. Instead, we got a smear of gimmicks that some-but-not-all classes can use for passive boosts, while others have to utility, trait, or both for an acceptable non-combat movement speed.

And unless a build template can be designed to swap immediately as something tags me into combat, it’s not a solution.

I have 100% map on 4 characters, and cringed everytime i had to complete black citidel, its a freakin iron maze and everything looks the same and usually get lost cca 10-12 times.

Confession: I hate the Grove. Hate. I would accept Scarlet Briar coming back to life, if it meant her taking a giant comedy law mower and razzing the place into timber. Flat timber. As in, one level. I hate, hate, how vertical the Grove is.

I think staff selection is really bad (skin wise).

Maces are worse. ;__;

MMO Introverts Unite (individually)

Also introvert here.
I do mostly solo stuff, but once dailies are done, I’m keen to group up for fractals, etc. I doubt I’ll ever see a raid, even though I’d like to do them.

I get by with a small, quiet-ish guild. RP guild, too, because of a higher likelihood of good writing. Seeing illiterate twitter-speak jump into my guild chat grates on my psyche, and having a large guild full of that would make me immediately jump ship.

Funny thing is, while an introvert, I do very much enjoy group accomplishments. I just also happen to be picky with whom I associate. >.>

Nobody running keys does it ONE time, either.

The scrolls are for new characters (and thus promotes new character slot sales). This is also why they only add levels up to 20 and not just add 20 levels to any character.

Nobody? Just proved that wrong. lol huehuehue XD

And new characters? Who’s making new characters these days that has also been playing the game for more than a year? The new trait system is an utter hindrance, and the general pulse of things is that it’s no longer worth it to make new ones. I’m certainly not (except for key runs =P and those don’t count). Not to say nobody is, but I have to wonder how much NA/EU new character slot sales have dropped.

Maybe if they remade the scrolls to get to 36 instead of 20. Or 60. I’d make a new character if I could bounce to 60 instantly. Maybe. Either way, Experience Scroll is really, really lackluster now.

So far, my experience with navigating the map is more of a pain due to GW2’s classically bad collision detection on slopes. Getting snagged on small hitches in the terrain really needs to stop, and there needs to be proper differentiation between climbable and nonclimbable slopes.

tl;dr – If you’re going to make “jumping puzzle zones,” refine the collision detection first. -_-

To where I am so far:

First fight was bleh. Needing to simultaneously tank (keep damage away from golems) and damage threats surrounding targets put me at odds to objectives. Not ‘hard,’ just dragged on for conflicting reasons.

“Big reveal” left me nonplussed and questioning why there was a need for earlier deception. Patiently waiting to care. Not that it’s helped by the big reveal being Big B, as I’ve learned to hate that name after Auric Basin.

Y’all hate underwater activity that much, do you? :\

Leather Farm

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

This may be a stupid question, but rather than all these fancy farms and whatnot, why not tweak the recipe to require, say, 3 leather rather than 4? What does it take more leather to craft the leather upgrade than it takes to craft a bolt of silk?

I seem to recall this same exact conversation a couple of years about, but about silk.

Anet actually answered this question recently. They said that changing the recipes would create a static drop in demand that is extremely unlikely to balance itself out in the long run (case in point, leather: they created a huge static increase in demand with HoT and it was unable to balance itself out, hence the implementation of the new farm). Personally, I still feel as if the better response would have been to change the recipes (either refinement or recipes for patches) to require less leather. That would undo part of the static increase in demand that HoT brought, which should have allowed leather to be able to balance itself out in the long run. But ANet disagreed with me, so we got a new farm instead.

The 4:1 for T5 leather is irritating, but I still find my production isn’t too bad. I just keep a lot on hand in case they do drop it to 3:1 or (haha never happening) 2:1 again.

At the same time, T6 went from 2:1 to 3:1, which was overkill. And it became required for all the armor patches, so of course it was due to shoot up out of control, since it is a rarer material. That is the problem we needed to fix.

Stop making Outfits, Start making Armor!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Stop making outfit threads. ANet has already explained the how and why of their armor and outfit development. Constantly making new threads about dead, beaten horses isn’t going to change that.

Well, that’s dumb. If we are willing to pay a lot of money for armor that can be sold through the gem store, then why would they not take the opportunity to make a lot more money? Having armor in the gem store is obviously a very desired thing if the topic continues to be brought up again and again.

Plus, I bought my first outfit this week, and I never plan on buying another… simply because you can’t mix-and-match at all. Overall, it’s just an illogical concept to sell outfits in a game that is based around making your character look how you want.

I get the reasoning. I support the reasoning. As a player with mostly Charr characters, trust me, I know how terrible the mix-and-match options are, and I want more.

But these “new” threads about outfits are always the same thing. Whine to the rallycry of “Stop making Outfits” without any understanding of why outfits are released so quickly. It’s exhausting to see this come up every (semi)monthly period without any consideration. It’s the Mount thread in a different form.

Armor sets are a huge undertaking, with older and less efficient coding, requiring 3 weights, 2 genders, and 5 races (or 3 rigs, to be more modest in estimates). That’s 30 (or 18) iterations to release a comparable set. Outfits pare out the weight restriction, and their concept design doesn’t have to match anything related to other releases. Armor sets may very well have to match in design and be released simultaneously (or, y’know, the players will whinge about that too…), which means more development time in between releases.

But right now, nothing new is being said in these threads.

Some things should not be dailies

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

  • Activities were bugged today generally. That is bad luck, bad timing (and possibly bad QA), but doesn’t make it bad to include activities in dailies.
  • When I choose to do the PvE 4-event dailies, there is always a spot that I can camp that has 2-3 events that respawn within 5-10 minutes. Plus JPs now count for the event total, so aside from the extra travel/WP-usage, they really don’t take any longer than getting into place for a WB. (Definitely faster than Shattererererer.)

There are a few philosophical questions about dailies that people keep raising and maybe ANet should discuss them:
The main one is:
Should dailies be trivial? Or are they serving a purpose beyond rewarding frequent flyers (and so won’t always be)?

  • If they are meant to be trivial, then shouldn’t they only include quickly-achievable goals? (That would exclude certain JPs, certain WBs, and maybe some 4-event maps.)
  • If they are meant to be trivial, why are there only 4 options for PvE-only players?
  • If they aren’t meant to be trivial, then why are so many so easily accomplished by farming a home instance or camping particular locations?
  • If they are meant to encourage people to try new things, then why do they include the sort of things that most people already do every day?

My personal feeling is that the login rewards already serve as the trivial component of frequent-flyer rewards and I’d prefer that dailies be a bit more interesting. At the same time, I confess that I like being able to finish dailies within 30 minutes, even if I’m not paying much attention.

tl;dr are dailies meant to be trivial? or are they meant to be something more? (and if so, what’s that “something”?) In the meantime, daily activities were bugged and some JPs are a lot more difficult than others.

I’d say that dailies should be accomplished in under an hour. That’s enough commitment time to say “yes, I did something and got a reward” and not the old “omgomg I have to do ALL these things and it takes me 3 hours to finish” that some players put themselves through before. They’d spend most of their play time doing dailies and ignoring the rest of the game. So, yes, interesting dailies, in moderation.

We’re getting toward a good spot with dailies. Sort of. To echo something I’ve said for probably over a year, region event completion, not zone.
Region farming ought to be the more specific one, changed to zone farming, and use that as a tool to guide players to underplayed zones or rising material prices.

I’m seeing much less of “wait two hours for a specific boss” dailies, but those still aren’t good, especially when you still have to /wiki the event timer. There really ought to be an event recruiter in major cities to guide players toward the upcoming boss.

  • Activities were bugged today generally. That is bad luck, bad timing (and possibly bad QA), but doesn’t make it bad to include activities in dailies.

Actually, I think activities don’t belong in PvE dailies at all because they are not PvE. Players compete against players. That’ll be PvP then.

Been saying this for a while, too. I loathe Daily Activity because it’s PvP. It’s no fun unenergetically ‘trying’ for 5 minutes while some other player runs away with the game because he’s got 1000 games under his belt.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Which, I don’t recall ever seeing a player ask for such a change.

It’s a side effect of some players saying “GW2 isn’t enough like GW1!” and wanting skill hunts like the good old days. So, I understand the intent.

The execution, as seems to be ANet’s modus operandi of late, is flummoxed. Even after an update a few weeks ago, the trait hunts are laborious, boring, random, and poorly paced with the leveling experience.

Though, now I’m curious, what should a luck-eater do?
Spit out a loot chest that Magic Find actually works on?
Or would it work more like candy corn gobblers and spit out buffs to Magic Find?
Or maybe it spits out a guaranteed exotic? (Better chance to find those rare-skin exotics or precursors!)

That’s the reason for why they have all those control skills, the mobs are designed to engage you, even if you don’t want to engage them.

There are other ways to accomplish that. Take Risen Thralls, for example. They engage by being extremely fast and just bulldogging you. That’s the right way to do it: give the enemies more power rather than taking it away from the player.

Before someone resorts to rhetoric, I’m not saying creatures shouldn’t have CC. But it should come at a cost like it does the player. Instead of 5 mummies with the same abilities, have one in the group that uses CC but in return does not put out much damage. Then you get neat things like tactics. (am I able to break CC enough to ignore the CC guy and reduce the heavy hitters or do we need to focus the CC guy ASAP?)

Also, it seems there’s a lot of “I can beat it, therefore it’s fine”mentality. OP didn’t say it was unbeatable, he said it was overused, and I agree. Stop the measuring contest, it helps no one.

Also arguing whether or not the labyrinth can be navigated solo is not the topic. Just saying.

Thiiiiis. Sorry, I couldn’t put it more elegantly, but this has been a major-minor gripe about GW2 for me for a long while. I can beat the mobs when they come up (in Labyrinth I’m usually taking on several enemies at a time), but it’s just irritating that certain enemies not only spam it as the first thing they do (did they learn this from bearbows, I wonder?), but often times the enemies have it in a superior fashion to players.

I know I’d love to have a 3-5 second knockdown on a 20-second cooldown. (hint, hammer, hint)

From a game design sense, taking control away from a player for more than a second or two is just bad.

Poll to remove Daily Achivement Cap?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Ive just hit 20K, and I cant seem to earn any decent amount of AP without it taking years. The 10 a day is really my only reasonable resource left.
Whats worse is, there are many collections and achievements that are a lot of effort, where you rruly feel like you achieved something, and then you get 1-3 ap formit. 1-3?? Thats peanuts. Thats nothing. Thats a drop in the ocean. I think AP should reflect the difficulty or time spend to be more realistic. If a collection is going to take more than 2 weeks, make it worth more 3x 1AP

A fine point to reiterate, yes. AP from permanent sources is just not scaled well to the effort and time it takes to accomplish the achievements. I fully agree with OriOri that we should have permanent rewards with meaningful AP values, and that content should be released steadily, so that AP hunters can feel that accomplishment.

As I’ve said before, dailies do give a somewhat absurd AP reward for tasks that are really simple. At the same time, cutting off the AP flow entirely demotivates from logging in. And to say “go play another game” in response to that is part of the problem. As players do go play other games, the odds of them coming back are even lower than if they just check in once or twice a week. Contact with the game allows/improves up-selling.

The issue goes beyond “AP Cap” and into the realm of AP Revamp. There need to be workflows in place during development to ensure aces and achievers get their form of gameplay by having meaningful recognition for challenging content. Veterans and the daily dedicated players deserve to have a minor reward for doing something more than logging in. We have login rewards, but they’re literally get-on/get-off without interacting at all. No time sunk into it, no time to check on guildies. Dailies as a rewards-sampler spur that extra time in game, which means building/maintaining social connections, playing content, and eventually checking out the gem store.

Part of that reform/revamp is putting kitten in the cap and letting the AP leak out a bit. Not the 10-per-day gusher that the first 15,000 points are. 3 tasks, 3AP. Leaderboard doesn’t have to chase it every day, as was their complaint before, but the trickle of points ought to be sufficient for veterans to continue logging in.

  • This assumes that people who key farm would spend $ on keys in the absence of key farming.
  • On top of the rarity of ticket scraps, they force you to get 10 just to make 1. Its a system obviously designed to make chunks of money[…]
  • For what you get, black lion keys are way over priced, they shouldn’t be more than 25 gems per key in my opinion.

Considering keys are $1.60 right now, it’s really friggin’ insulting for what little we get for it. Even as a bundle, they’re too costly.
Dropping them to 40 Gems ($0.50) is something even a frugal player can flick a few quarters at.

Theres a reason we call raiders the 1%, because thats all they will ever be. Only a minority of dedicated players actually raid, only a minority of dedicated pvpers actually want to be part of an e-sport.

Not to be the “um actually” guy, but actually, it’s more like 10% for GW2. Which is freakin’ stellar by MMO standards (most fall between 2%-7%). If anything makes it feel like the 1% problem, it’s the actual 1% who kewkew about whatever it is they kew about to make the whole raiding (or dungeons, or open world, or…) affair a spitbucket of toxic sludge. GW2 can’t be blamed for that.

Granted, GW2 isn’t the same game with HoT attached. There is a ton of aggravation included, and we’re not seeing the same care and attention to detail with a number of things. But it’s still one of the best games on the market for delivering an MMO experience.

It’s very muddled, and it can’t decide what it wants to do. I have a bow, and the skills are.. okay. I’m not wow’d by them. The traits mostly support the longbow, but the other half of the spec wants, so badly, to be melee.

Traps. I had several holy kitten moments while using them. I like them for their potency. I hate them for their melee focus. At the same time, I want to dive in with these traps, Wings of Whatever dive in with a healbomb, set traps, and swing for the fences with my greatsword.

But the spec is at odds with itself because of the longbow, and its minor traits try to support it too much, so not using longbow feels like a waste.

Game Updates: Traits

Since Pookie’s updating, why not?

Ran around for Warband Wednesday with my buddy. Content isn’t even a challenge with two people in tandem. Still not feeling like I’m approaching a build at level 46. There’s barely anything to “explore”, except the vast, vast expanses of Lornar’s Pass. We’re in a 25-40 zone because completion is required for a trait one of us wants, instead of being in a level-appropriate zone.

Did I mention that Lornar’s Pass isn’t all that interesting? And it’s huge? And uninteresting? This is by far the biggest slough of the character’s career, and the reward isn’t even for me. (I kinda owe my friend back for dragging him through Harathi 9 levels too early. :P)

Meanwhile, I took my Mesmer to Lyssa, sat and waited for a defense event, called it, and spent cash/points to get the trait instead. I’m glad the option’s there, because 3 gold is much easier and less time intensive than waiting at a boring spot for a fight I don’t want to do.

And, eureka-facepalm moment.

We have skill point events. These events we can start at any time, can be participated by others, and give us what we need to progress.

Why are there not triggerable trait point locations?! They could even start event chains for some of the late-game challenges. If the event chain fails, NPC comes back (maybe after a short cooldown or ‘fleeing’ the area on foot back to the spawn point), and whoever’s around can start it again. Just treat it like any other skill challenge to where the creatures don’t give loot, and we’re golden.

Peeps? Devs? Thoughts?

Lack of trinity will result group play in always being zerg/stack/dps race.

I’m so tired of hearing this myth.

As an observer, I took a look at Trinity play for a few fights. You know what I saw?
A bunch of melee around a stationary target while ranged dps lobbed stuff into a noisy, colorful blob. It looks EXACTLY like zerg/dps, on the surface.

Sure, there’s a tank trying to manage imaginary numbers and thumbing his nose at the boss. Sure, there’s a healer’s burden that gets dispersed in GW2. And DAMAGE IS THE POINT OF EVERY BOSS FIGHT EVER.

But it doesn’t look different.
Why?
Mechanics.

Whether it’s in Trinity or GW2, a good boss keeps ALL the players engaged with damage fields, special attacks, unique statuses, and the occasional set of allies. GW2 play can be well thought, but for the most part, it hasn’t.
As an example, in FF14, they make heavy use of adds. Lots of adds. A flood of them. GW2’s tank-less play is highly well suited to this. Rather than focus on one HP-sponge monolith, it can create encounters where the centerpoint is only half the fight, and the rest comes from an army to fight off the zerg with cleaves and bombs and area-CC.

It can be better, we need to insist on it, and also be patient to give devs time to create some new encounters.

Why I think HoT failed

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I honestly feel like people stay with GW2 because the game play is simply a lot of fun. We can all see how awesome a lot of the mechanics and maps are in the game. It’s just the game itself is not fun. I’ve been coming to this slow conclusion and what hit me was what this person on the review said. I probably would of left the game had i not had made friends with people from my guild.

That’s about where I stand. I love my characters. I still love GW2’s combat system and character options. But going into Magus Falls (or Dry Top) is an exercise in time-gated frustration that doesn’t respect me as a player.

When the game unsubtly tells me “you’re not allowed to explore until I say you can,” there’s something terribly wrong, especially when it blocks character/account progression. Hide my rewards behind group metas and big events, but don’t do that to my mastery insights and hero challenges.

I want Tengu as the next playable race!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Nope….we all want Largos to be the next playable race, none of us want to play an ugly overgrown chicken.

I’m not particular to either, there are way more interesting races than Largos and Tengu.

But so far as design goes… Largos are just really bad knockoffs of drow. They are supposed to be this society of assassins from the deep ocean yet prior to the awakening of the dragons, had no competition in their realm, their only neighbors being the quaggan, (the krait have kept close to shore since ancient times) no conflict or deity or anything at all to inspire such an odd culture. Their biology makes, no sense, rigid wings would provide absolutely zero propulsion in water. The terrible accents… the monochromatic color scheme, seriously what was the design team on when they thought these things up? Just their combination of attributes makes them sound like they were taken directly from the scribblings of a middle schoolers notebook.

And the truth shall set you free!

Now gimmie my birdies so I can buy another 9 character slots. >.>

It’s not lost. Turns out they put it in another line. I’m not sure what determines which line they put it in, but they definitely put it in one. Forgot about my mastery points for a while, remembered about them, thinking they were lost. Turns out they threw the excess exp from my Pact Commander Mastery line down into the Fractal line.

Interesting, if true.
The tutorial states that the experience is lost, but it’d be a polite feature to have experience funnel elsewhere if your current one maxes out.

So far as I understand it, they’re intended to be community efforts, similar to when the devs leak some story bit or Mystic Forge challenge.

While it can be irritating that it seems like the devs are taunting us with low-conveyance randomness, it actually creates an opportunity for player engagement. (And more site hits for Dulfy :P)

Non-instanced PvE grouping is so boring

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Agreed. They tuned back the creatures to account for trait loss, but now they’re all way too easy. The lack of challenge was partially what bored two of my other friends from the game. (That and a lack of dedicated “healer” roles. >.>;;;)

The game could definitely use some roaming or random-location spawning champions as well. Something not on the train radar. Or something that shows up more rarely than every 5 minutes, like the giant at Nageling. (That was a run 3-man ranger run, by the way. My bear tanked it. :P)

That’s an interesting idea. Or maybe it’s something like a “Legendary Sigil” that you can get/craft, when attached does the same thing instead. This also leads to an opportunity to have Legendary Rune sets as well.

Plausible candidate for Jewelcrafting 500. Just sayin’.

[Suggestions] Quality of Life Changes

Enable a search bar/function for browsing traits. Every kitten time I attempt to switch to the trait that ‘reduces fall damage’, it takes like 5 minutes before I find it or I give up and jump off a cliff to my death before respawning and simply walking around an easier way. For reference this is in WvW, I mainly do WvW, so that’s where I enjoy spending my time, so not being able to glide, there are some jumps that are landable ONLY if you use the profession-specific trait to reduce the fall damage.

Relevant wiki page: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Damage#Falling_damage

I kind of don’t understand why this trait is locked into a particular spec either. Gliding makes the trait completely useless in pve. It can’t be used in pvp because of balance issues. It would be useless in fractals/dungeons. So WvW is the ONLY mode where this trait might be relatively still useless, because boohoo anet didn’t want to stir up the ‘competitive’ nature of wvw by adding gliding.

It would even be simpler just to have an On/Off box to enable to trait. I would gladly temporarily give up one of my other traits just to enable the reduced fall damage trait for the one jump I would need to make once every blue moon.

In short either: 1. Enable gliding in wvw
OR
2. Make it easier to find and enable ‘reduce fall damage’ trait.

Please and thankyou, sincerely,
the adventurous one who keeps jumping off cliffs in wvw

Yeah, I can’t imagine anyone using the fall damage traits for anything other than silly gimmick reasons anymore. Gliding makes it irrelevant in PvE, and even then, the side effect (knockback, muddy terrain, etc.) was so conditional as to be very niche.

It would be better to free up that trait slot for something useful and move falling damage reduction to a Tyria mastery or WvW leveling path. For reference, see Pact Commander Mastery and Provisions Master in how those lines deal with auto loot.
Falling damage should be the same way.

I want Tengu as the next playable race!

Well guys no need to worry that much and be whiny about this topic XD
With the “We” I was referring mainly to most of my guild mates and other people i spoke about online about Tengu and everyone else was interested in having Tengu as a playable race.
Anyway being it Tengu, Kodan, Largos or something else I can see that some people are agreeing about wanting a new race. Would it be possible? Maybe…Would it be worth it? Well it’s new content so it could be

Yeah, some people just sort of include themselves when others talk in first person possessive.

“You don’t speak for me!” /fingersnaps
“I wasn’t. My friends and I, hence the ‘we’, would like this.”

And I’d happy cash out for Tengu or Kodan. The Tengu are a vibrant race with lore, and they can cross-over a fair amount of Charr style because of the similar body types. Kodan are sort of dour and far too similar (because polar bears), but I have the perfect name for one, and I want to giggle at all the sad Shirokuma fans that walk around in Chef Outfits. :P
Or Skritt. I doubt it’ll happen, but it should!

Move adventure mastery points to normal ap

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

What is relevant to the issue is that there is a foreign element (content outside of the genre) that has not only been introduced to the game, but is being used as a road block to progression in the game.

Source?

We bought Guild Wars 2, not Super Mario Bros, Burgertime, or Call of Duty. That’s what ODB meant.
The MMO format isn’t suitable to these sorts of genres. The controls aren’t the same, and they’re poorly tuned for what they ask us to do to succeed at them.

If they wanted us to try them, and maybe even like them, they failed at it overall. Long stretches of unavailable time, instances pulling players out of participation, frustrating mechanics that require masteries to get mastery points to get masteries, overtuned timing demands, RNG elements…

I have to wonder who even playtested this garbage and decided it was acceptable for general consumption.

Suggestion for Roleplaying

Two things that would help:

1. Add the option to right-click emote names, like you can with /say or /map. This makes it very easy to report inappropriate roleplaying (as verbal abuse, weirdly enough.)

2. Reduce the emote range. Please, by the Six, Abaddon, Gaheron, anyone, reduce the emote range. Almost nothing that happens in DivReach or Rata Sum is worth everyone hearing.
