To upgrade or build new PC?

I think, the likely thing you will want to upgrade is SSD. HDD is cheap and great for storage but for PC and Gaming experience, SSD is always better. Use HDD to store stuffs while SSD to run your applications.

Some people say that 8gb is plenty but honestly speaking, I find 8gb not enough for certain games if you want to keep your pagefile turned off, you will need 16gb for those games. Otherwise, with pagefile turned on, 8gb is good.

Also, if you intend to upgrade RAM, it might also worthwhile to consider upgrading your processor/board so you can make use of DDR4. Eventually, DDR4 will replace DDR3.

Casing wise, if you are talking about front USB, Yes, most are 3.0 now while some are mixed but is not hard to find a adapter cable for USB 2.0 to USB 3.0.

Overall, your rig is good. The only thing you should consider is SSD, processor and ram.

In what game design are raids good for games? Curious.

let see, it is really hard to say
to begin with, raid isnt suitable for gw2 due to its casual approach.

raid was originated from MUDs, the mother of all MMORPGs, a lot of ideas were taken from the different MUDs. most old school games are generally very grindy and with that, every different levels there will be a range of new gears and items. raid too was meant as a mean to obtain rare items that you won’t get from normal mobs. in those games, there could be several different raids and each raid could have different levels as it target the different leveling stage of the players.

for raid to complement the whole game design, it has to be aligned to the game progression but in gw2 case, there is very little reason to do raid other than the fancy legendary which is equivalent to a ascended.

furthermore, as casual as gw2 is, the mentality of the players are vastly different from people of grindy mmorpg.

Indeed. Enrage timer will naturally force people to go towards a direction which I believe, the deve wanted to avoid. High level skill is great but it naturally accompanied with gears and traits to meet that demand. I am being practical here, not idealistic. Let say you enter a raid, what are your raid leader going to do? He gonna check gears and roles, if raid size is limited, then the weaker players will be not allowed to participate.

Unless the raids are designed to be progressive, it gets more difficult as you go. Then, maybe the players skill can slowly progress with that as well. The raid can double up as a form of training to improve one’s skill.

PS: i didn’t read the entire thread, if someone already suggested the raids to be progressive, then, please ignore this post.

Server Status Full

Top servers are being purposefully capped to help spread out the population into the lower linked servers. Once unlinked, I believe the hope is that the lower tiers will see a much better parity for action-based WvW.

Opening up the higher tier servers would defeat this attempt to fix an issue everyone’s been screaming about for three years — stacked T1 NA servers.

Over in EU it’s a bit different (well except for SFR :p), where players have spread themselves out and not stacked any one server — although that appears to be changing, too sadly.

This initiative is to push NA players into different servers because they were unwilling to destack themselves, and still cried on the forums about it.

I don’t think it was done intentionally. I believe the API for host server calculated both the host and the guest server population. This happen because of the server linking and I believe their design approach is to make one of the servers responsible for the overall population and that is the host server.

Furthermore, your last statement is not logical. This does not encourage T1s players destacking in any way. It encourage players to destack and stack on specific server even more than before. Why? There were two barriers to stacking which are server status and the accompanied cost. Now, those barriers are weakened with the 500 gem guest server. Guilds will now then stack on that guest servers which is why you see some guest servers raised to High. If you put together what I said in the previous paragraph and this logic, you will then understand that some servers population have dropped, however, do you know which servers dropped? Certainly isn’t the T1 servers. It never for one bit encourage T1s to destack simply because people are moving their guest server to further stack on it.

Strawman argument.

The quotes you have made are nothing but pips argument that demand ranks pip to be equalised. However, in anet case, they increase pip gain on a base value basis which means ranks pip still remains. Likewise, there is nothing in the quote that talks about tickets.

Furthermore, these pips arguments were made before announcement of legendary armor. Now, a lot of wvers have interest in those legendary stats as it benefits a gameplay that require frequent changes of stats.

Fallacy isn’t a argument, is a poor attempt to start a non-intellect conflict.

I’ve been a solo player for years, I’ve made and paid for my own guild to reach level 5 via buying commendations with in game gold and now with the release of HOT I just found out I need to find some players to grind favor so I can try obtain my own guild hall? I don’t enjoy trying to coordinate playing the game with friends to achieve something. I don’t want to join another guild. Why the F do I need a minimal of 3 people to gain favor? I was planning on trying to solo clear out my own hall but now I find out I need Favor just to freaken attempt to obtain a guild? WTF? What happened to big and small guilds can obtain their own Hall? Can you please sort this Anet because a fair percentage of your player base prefer to solo regularly.

i bought it for 30usd thus is acceptable….to some degree
but 2016 is a brand new year for many dx12 games…. anet need to pick up or be replaced but since gw2 target casuals though current trend don’t seems that casual any more but w/e, casuals won’t change games that often unlike the gamers.

though i wouldn’t put HOT into the same category as expansion
it is not complete and some people notice that while some people argue that the expansion is just a foundation for the many things to come but to those who say that has no idea what it means to be incomplete. incomplete simply means that there are missing contents, contents that we suppose to be able to access but not there because anet simply delivered a incomplete product on a rushed unplanned schedule.

They have multicore support, only not for more than 4 cores.

nope is only two cores and anet staff already verified that the game indeed is badly optimized to the point that even though it appear to be utilizing two cores, a lot of the things are done on one thread thus it is mainly one core that doing the job.

also…multi cores as in…cpu scaling

gw2 was developed in the old era that still uses 2 cores….
however, dev can no longer keep using two cores as the core speed no longer increases, what continue to increase is the number of cores we have on our processor. even intel made a statement to all game dev to start using the cores and not depend on single core performance, i guess intel also reaching their limit on single core performance

Just take a look into your task manager. If only 2 cores are used a i5 would not
even run at 50%.

Reduce the impact of night capping?

In some korean pvp mmorpg I have played. They “solve” the off hours issue by making special objectives not recap-able for X hours, regardless the of the timing. These special objectives are very rewarding and the whole fractions gameplay are revolved around defending and attacking for these special objectives. Fractions can only hold X amount of these special objectives at any time.

These special objectives provide a wide range of buffs for the entire fraction, in additional to that, participants who capture these objectives are rewarded high value loots. Thus, servers players regardless of PvE-er, PvPer, WvWer will naturally want to help defend and attack. Naturally, these buffs are not your lame 5% boost but a 10-15% boost for each objective and it accumulate, possible to gain 50%-100% drop rate.

Naturally, they still not able to truly resolve the so-called off hours unbalance issue because of the greedy natural of human, players like to stack on server.

Theoretically speaking, it is extremely difficult for any system to determine the timezone related issues unless the server has a data mining similar feature which used historical records to determine a user playing habit and timing. Then, based on that, determine if the user is eligible to make a transfer to the server. However, that will also mean that the population status will be made personalised and that will require quite a bit of computing power.

So, what I assume is that they determine the server overall strength by using certain kind of point system based on the historical records of the server populations. Then lock a server up. That is to say, if the server is extremely stacked in NA timing and averagely stacked for off hours, it is likely the server will be full. Likewise, a server that is well distributed 24 hours will also be full.

Some of you have a very big misunderstanding on something. As far as I have read, the dev team did consider possible solutions but the main problem here is community acceptance to the solutions. In other words, solutions that theoretically will solve the balance issue is not necessary acceptable by the community because such solutions will involve dissolving all servers. Thus, they have to explore ways to do it, ways that will not kitten off the community but let me tell you, those “ways” found will be much less effective. For example, the current world linking. It is great in some way but I am sure everyone agree it doesn’t solve the population balance. However, this is the result of a less effective method, a method that will not kitten off the community.

Some of you are asking to keep things and yet at the same time asking for population balance, do you realize that is contradictory in nature? You can’t achieve population balance without radical changes, not after 3 years.

Guild Hall Grind

fyi, capturing a guild hall is scaled, a larger guild that field more people actually has more difficulty getting the guild hall compare to a 5-men team. so ur argument is invalid.

Not really invalidating any part of the argument, as once the hall is captured it’s still on a FAST track to being upgraded by a huge guild.
If anything, you invalidated your own argument by bringing in the one and only feature that makes things harder for big guilds, especially when they might just do it with 5 officers.

the basis of your argument is this
“If it can take 5 people to capture the guild hall, those same 5 should be able to competitively keep up with upgrading the guild hall as anyone else”

however, the reality is the more people, the harder to capture thus your argument which is based on that thus become non-convincing.

also, even in the old guild system which use influence, larger guild too upgrade their guild faster unless the smaller guild pump large amount of golds into purchasing influence. still, that will means the smaller guild go out of their way to burn their pockets to keep up with the competitions. reality is, in this kind of linear progression, the larger guild will always get their guild hall up either faster or easier or both.

I guess the primary issue is the skill lag. It is unfortunate but skill lag is something that has been complained over the years and nothing is really done about it. It is either anet doesn’t care or just has no idea how to fix, I personally don’t believe is the latter.

Regardless, in a skill lag fight your only option is to be the first to do the damage and even glass canon can win the fight.

The existence of trinity in a way is a good thing. It force people to play as a team and I think that is really good for MMO. Taking away that and giving everyone the ability to solo, it kinda take away people’s chances to interact with people and thus people seems more apart. The game actually became less connected.

The issue is…..previously the voice on population balancing is much softer than the voice of scoring. It is not that there isn’t anyone mentioning about population balancing but a lot more people on the forums were celebrating and show more concern about scoring than population balancing itself. To put it in other words, there were more people who care about night capping scoring than actual population itself.

In that perspective, anet not giving population balance as priority is logically understandable though at the same time, short sighted.

Regardless, a lot of people have given up the hope there will be even any population balance, those voices have gotten smaller, anet actions towards WvW are simply depressing.

commanders kicking Rangers and Thief

Had a awesome commander the other night you know what he did with his rangers and Thiefs he gave them shared participation and had the thiefs and rangers hold the keeps,camps and towers while the zerg did there thing.

So dont give me that excuse.

That is only if the thieves and rangers followed the instructions, many don’t. It is a universal truth, not everyone read chats, not everyone gonna do what you want them to do, not everyone gonna say yes just because you say please.

This is indeed a prejudice but this prejudiced is so happen built up by the numerous predecessor examples. Commanders are still people, eventually they got tired of telling everyone the same thing over and over again every single day., especially when the words fall on death ears and having to undergo losing battles. Commanders are not paid to please other players.

Concerns about World Linking & Reward Tracks

1. How often will the world link changes? The frequency of this changes will affect the different server’s TS3 and how they manage their ts3. This can be really troublesome to ts3 management and on how players approach to resolve the differences in ts3 usage.

2. How is this gonna resolve the issue caused by the megaserver which forced guilds to recruit players from different servers? The link will only benefit selected servers but majority of the players will still be in different server and thus not able to play WvW together. Furthermore, since the link supposedly to be dynamic, guilds that begin recruiting from the linked world might end up in a situation where they find themselves having different world members and if one day anet decided that the link world is to change, those guild will be screwed like the guilds that recruit from mega server.

3. Does the reward track apply to EOTM? If it does, it doesn’t resolve the reward inequality between EOTM and the normal WvW. Furthermore, more people will do EOTM and abuse the reward tracks.

You know thinking about it, in the beginning when they were planning on an overflow map for queues, they should have just reused ebg as the eotm map, and used that year on developing a second borderland map instead. We could of had 3 borderland maps by now.

Which would have probably led to mass qq about that map considering the designs they used in there, but maybe the desert borderland map would have been better because of lessons learned from that fiasco.

Oh well.

LOL, so true. They can just modify the EBG a little and there, boom.
