SoR checking in. We placed 3rd in every matchup for over 6 months when we fell. Good luck, Maguuma.

Josh- I have a theory as to why you might get only 1 player in a circle. One time, going through the portal, I was maybe a bit overzealous in whacking the interact key to take the port. I was ported in, but then a split second later, I was kicked out and given a message that I couldn’t enter because of the energy field sickness debuff.
I believe that, if you interact multiple times with the field before the server responds, the second interact will cause the debuff to be added and kick you out.
I don’t know if this is helpful as a fix suggestion, but if you can, try applying the sickness debuff about 5 seconds after you’ve gotten onto the circle.
Also: thanks for coming here and responding. I really hope you guys solve the overflow issue soon. I’ve been trying to do this event with about 8-10 guildies and have found it basically impossible to get in the event together. We can’t get everybody into an overflow before it fills up half the time!

The headline of this thread is “Cheers for anti-zerg philosophy”
I just made a list what this headline means in a game, and if ArenaNet would do like headline says.
If you, timmyf, don’t know what anti- word means it is against something. So that who made this headline is cheering for anti-zerg philosophy, he is cheering for against zerg philosophy. And if ArenaNet really takes that headline seriously and make this game totally anti-zerg game, all those what I have been listing in there are really going to happen.
Your examples are against of anti-zerg philosophy too, anti-zerg means not zerg at all good zergs or bad zergs, what means in the game should not be organized zerg, not anything what might affect zerg behaviour or what is tempting to make zerg in a game.
But I can not help, timmyf, if you don’t understand what anti-zerg philosophy really means.
Well, if we are looking for a definition for “anti-zerg philosophy” AS INTENDED BY THE ORIGINAL POSTER, perhaps we could read his post, rather than just the headline.
Last year was awfull for me, there was no gameplay to be had there, it was just running around in a big zerg and spamming #1 skill. It was no fun. This time we need to split the zerg in medium size groups, and this time player skills matter more. So thank you for that, I really like the change, and I hope more of this will come, like marionete fights etc… Just make sure that you make events that scales well for medium number of people as well as for huge number.
The OP clearly states that he likes that the change requires a MEDIUM number of people – a large group split up into smaller groups.
Unlike, as you suggested repeatedly, absolutely no grouping at all.

Glad to see the event timer has been updated. Wish the griefers would also be “fixed.”

On the scope of Fractals as a vulnerable instance:
Why is the instance owner allowed to be kicked? What’s the point in that? Atleast make him immune to kick.
I feel like there could be some karmic justice in this. Also, if you have a group that’s, say, 4 guild members and 1 PUG, the PUG can start the instance as protection against possible kicking later.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I know you actually cannot answer to these questions, but at least you can see them and the company can talk about them.
So, I don’t actually work at ArenaNet, so I could be completely wrong, but…
1) They already have seen the complaints
2) Bobby telling other devs that people on the forum are complaining wouldn’t help, because #1
3) In addition, even if Bobby knows, which he may or may not, he can’t tell you that a) they know b) they’re looking into fixing it or c) basically anything else
So instead of constantly derailing red-tagged threads, can we instead focus on how cool it is that the head of all the writers of the game we like cares enough about what we think to not only read through it, but respond as well?
Thanks Bobby. I agree with what everybody else says: Taimi makes me chuckle and I think the way she interacts with other characters – slightly differently for each – is great. The past few releases have gotten noticeably better, especially the cutscene dialogue, and I’m hoping you guys keep it up for season 2.
Which, by the way, Bobby can’t tell us when it will arrive. He also can’t tell us when they’ll tell us it will arrive.
He might be able to tell us that he knows one of those two, but that’s probably a stretch as well.

But like in sports all Anet has to do is start winning. Start implementing things the majority of the fan base wants and a lot of the negativity will fall into the background.
Wardrobe? Check.
Account-bound dyes? Check.
Underflow system? Check.
Free retraiting and repairs? Check.
Better rewards for PvP and non-Conquest maps? Check. Are you sure the negativity will fall into the background? :-/
All of those (with the possible exception of the last one – not being PvP player, i wouldn’t know) were either implemented in a way that significantly differed from what was suggested, or were tied to some strictly negative changes, or both. Don’t you think it might be possible, that if they were implemented the way the proposers wanted the reaction would have been different?
Of course! And then a different group of people would have been upset. You can’t please everybody, especially when everybody has the anonymity to show up on message boards and whine about it.

Very simply, shouldn’t all Guilds be able to participate in Guild Missions?
Every guild can—so long as they research the appropriate upgrades, recruit enough members or outside assistance, and work together to finish the content. This is quite similar to saying every character can kill Zhaitan—as long as they’ve leveled to 80, purchased gear, found a group, etc. Keep in mind that content is often in itself something to be achieved. In this case we’ve taken that concept from character progression and applied it to guilds, and now we have guild progression (which should read as something new for guilds to do). That’s on top of all the other things guilds are already for.
This is a fair point, but I’d like to draw a contrast: EVERYBODY must level to 80, gear up, and find a party to kill Zhaitan. Every. Single. Player. And there’s a system like this:
1) Work hard and play a lot
2) Achieve a certain level of competence
3) You get to fight Zhaitan!
Now pretend you’re an individual who is not in a guild. Two guilds are recruiting you, one big, one small…
The Big One Says: We have guild missions now! They run all the time! We have 24/7 buffs and you’ll have 5 opportunities every week to run a mission and we never fail because we have 100 people online!!!
The Small One Says: We’re working on guild missions! We should have them in a few weeks! We’ll probably try once or twice a week when we get the 10 or so actives we need to try them! Hopefully you’ll be on then!
That makes it harder to recruit.
Furthermore, leveling to kill Zhaitan is both a competency-gate and an equal amount of work for all players. It takes everybody (roughly) the same amount of time to get there. With the structure of these missions, you can have it easy (join a big guild and you don’t have to do a thing) or very hard (join a smaller guild and have to influence farm or donate your gold.)
That’s the difference that I see.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
This is a widely-known complaint about crafting. Dual-wielding is roughly (but not exactly) twice as expensive. It’s existed across multiple tiers of weapons through multiple acquisition methods.
Dungeon tokens are similar. Two-handers are, what, 390 tokens? Singles are 300 or 210? So it’s 390 vs 510 or 600.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I started enjoying the game WAY more when I started ignoring the hearts. I’d just run around, explore (by uncovering map, getting WPs POIs and vistas), and kill stuff/do events along the way.
Leveling went faster. Enjoyment went through the roof.
Hearts are, to me, a very unfortunate addition.

Or they could just adjust it back down to 2 scraps = 1 bolt…
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I could see this being interesting for SPECIFIC, LIMITED areas – think the Junudu (sp?) from GW1. Perhaps there’s a particular expanse you must cross, but gliding won’t get you there… so you must learn to fly on a gigantic pterodactyl or something…
But the use of those “mounts” should be limited to one area of the map for one purpose and not act as a free passive 25% speed buff for players who level the mastery.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Q: Why do we keep getting backpieces and minis as rewards?
A: Given multiple races, genders, and character sizes, it takes quite a long time to build any armor that isn’t a backpiece because it must be designed multiple times for different models. Backpieces are (likely, but hey, I don’t really know for sure) WAAAAAY faster to create. Ditto minis.
If the Living Story happened at a slower pace, we might be able to get better rewards from it as well, as the designers working on the game would have more time to build real gear.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Look, the truth is that there are players (such as myself) who enjoy the game substantially and are willing to let Anet off the hook for a few missteps here and there. There are other players who will be critical of any change that impacts them whatsoever.
I’ll continue to show up in threads and remind you guys that game developers are people who don’t deserve abuse from anonymous forum-posters (and get called a White Knight) just like Romo will continue to show up and complain that his Fractal level was reset on every single post with a red-tag (and get called a Whiner).
I’m just surprised this thread is still open, as it mostly consists of mud-slinging and personal attacks. It seems like it has outlived its usefulness.

Sorry Ronah, I’m only a fan of a Hard Mode in instances, not in the open world. (As a side note, I feel like Hearts are the absolute worst part of this game and am shocked that anybody would WANT to repeat them.)

Here’s a fun thing to try: at 10 past the hour, go to Canal Ward and write down the names of all the players standing there. At 40 past the hour, go back and compare names.
You think it’s innocent, 5-minute AFKing? This should disabuse you of that notion.
And they should be punished because? How about the people who jump overflows to earn several heirlooms?
Is this a cultural thing? Is there a reason that lots of people think this behavior is okay?
I’m confused because this not only seems wrong to me, it seems OBVIOUSLY wrong. To others, it seems OBVIOUSLY okay.
There’s something here that I don’t quite understand that’s leading us to such wildly different conclusions.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Why is any development effort at all being wasted on things like this when WvW and sPvP are bleeding to death. Not to mention lack of dungeons (read, repeatable end game content).
Because the developers who build content like this do not have the skillset to fix WvW and sPvP. “A Developer” is not a resource which can be tasked to perform any activity. While it might require hours of reflection and thought, I’m sure you can come to an understanding of this simple truth.
As far as mail carriers, there’s only one I want.
Zhaitan.
I would like my mail to be delivered by Zhaitan, please.
(Okay, but in all seriousness, a “thief” option – perhaps even Caithe? – would be great. Pop out of stealth, flip past you, stealth again. Boom, mail delivered.)
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Yes, this should be fixed.
The way around it is to go into the dungeon before starting party, creating LFG, etc. Then you own the instance.
Of course, everybody in your party then has to worry about you…

So what you’re saying is that ArenaNet should nerf the one easily-accessible obvious counter to a Grenadier build that does good damage, good condi stacking, and can do it from 1500 range?
No, I think the game works exactly as it should.

I don’t think the open world is challenging enough for vanquishing to be a thing. Previously in this thread, I suggested new instanced zones without waypoints that could include a vanquishing concept. I called them Wilderness Zones. Still think that’s a better plan.
I had also suggested that Order Missions might send you into those zones and included a few examples. I could dig up a link if anybody’s interested.

From comments I’ve seen here when they added the options for dailies, they DON’T see it as fun. They feel the irrational (to us, but rational to them) desire to get every chivo to be “the best.” They mostly feel like it’s a gigantic, horrible grind.
Yet they keep doing it.
I get the feeling that it’s just gaming addiction.
(Just my general sense of things, obviously does not apply to everybody.)
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I love how everybody acts like the overflow system worked perfectly. Do you know how often I was able to play with my full guild for new Living World events on patch day?
Never.
How about my full party?
Occasionally.
How about just my girlfriend?
Usually, but not always.
Very often, by the time we all loaded into a map and tried to join on somebody else, that somebody else’s server would already be full. As would ours. Not soft-capped full. Hard-capped full. (We weren’t guesting.).
It worked perfectly for me, thanks. Play with my wife? 100% of the time. My party? 100% of the time (literally – I have no idea what stopped you here – can you explain?). Everyone from my guild who wanted to group? 100% of the time (maybe I got lucky there but…).
You must play during non-peak hours or on a low-pop server. Playing around 5-9pm server time (PST), events like Escape From Lion’s Arch would almost instantly create an overflow. Getting into main? Ha! Hilarious!
Okay, so you enter your overflow. Did all five members of your party make it into the same overflow? No, just three? Okay, the two people not with the three of us, join on us. Oh, the world is full? Okay, let’s join on the two of you. Oh, your world is full too?
That was how these events would go for us for WEEKS. Marionette was like this for over a week. Escape from LA was like this for a week or two. The events to retake LA seemed to be a bit better, but it was still hit or miss.
Trying to get 10-15 guildmates into the same overflow? Forget about it. That is simply not happening.
This is frustrating to me because I’m happy with Megaserver, yet I accept that it also has issues that require fixing. I don’t seem to be getting the same courtesy back. Opponents of Megaserver don’t seem to recognize that it solves a huge problem that many of us had. (Or that it should solve the problem. It remains to be seen.) It’d be nice for you to at least acknowledge that the system serves as an improvement for many people who don’t want to go back to the old way.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
This is good to hear. We have lots of people to teach to get to the point we can complete it regularly, but we’ll get there…
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Potential Risks
One risk is that people will be torn between two guilds that require them to be major members and people are forced to choose between them at the beginning. But its not really much of a risk, just ask one if you can minor, which should probably be OK for most guilds since minor members are not involved in the cap but can still be involved in most else. You might not be involved in some of the guild’s major events but you still keep friends.
I think you are really underestimating that risk.
Any Alliance system in GW2 should avoid changing the current multi-guilding system. No new system should remove existing flexibility unless ABSOLUTELY necessary.
I would hope ArenaNet has learned that lesson after a few missteps.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
If there are only 5 people doing an event, fine, let it be, but if there are 100 people doing it, why try to split them up instead of making the event scale up accordingly and not only increasing the foes life bar?
That’s a really good question! Reasons you might not want 100 people at a boss:
1) People with low-performing computers have awful framerates
2) Lots of graphical effects make it hard to see a boss and its tells, leading to rather boring gameplay – remember, GW2 is supposed to have “action combat”
3) Condition caps mean that players with condition builds are nearly useless
4) Not only can you not see the boss, but you can’t even really see other players! Smaller groups make it more likely that you’ll eventually notice the same people playing with you. (This requires megaserver to improve its placement of players in servers, so it may not be a factor yet.)
5) Each player feels less of an impact on the boss – doing 5% of the total damage feels like I’m doing more than doing 1% of the total damage.
Here’s a question for you: what is BETTER about 100 players attacking a single boss than 20 players attacking each of five bosses? Or 17 players attacking each of six bosses?

I just wanted to chime in and say I am NOT IN FAVOR of these ideas:
- Representing multiple guilds simultaneously
- Ending representation
- Earning influence for multiple guilds simultaneously
- Reducing the number of guilds you can join
- Completely doing away with build queues (as queues are one of the few ways small guilds can keep up with large guilds)
I don’t know if this is the right place to ask.. but can I ask why you’re not in favor of items 1, 2 and 3?
If you’re not in favor of them, you could always ask that your members only be in one guild.
You sure can! I should start by stating that I’m a guild leader and my guild does not have a 100% rep policy. In fact, we even have several ally guilds with whom we often do activities/cross represent.
So why am I opposed to these things?
Why Representing Multiple Guilds Simultaneously Is Bad
I think it’s important to distinguish between the act of representing and the additional results of that action. Representing, specifically, means that you wear the guild tag of a guild. Period. The other things – guild chat, buffs, influence gain, etc – are tied to that representation, but the representation itself is just a matter of choosing which guild tag you wear.
It’d be silly to let people wear 5 guild tags at the same time, in my opinion, so I come down on the line of only representing one guild.
Why Ending Representation/Multi-influence is Bad
There’s two ways to accomplish this: ending everything about representation except it functioning as a way to choose which guild tag you wear (I call this “ending representation in name only”) and fully ending representation. I get the feeling most people here think you should still be able to choose a guild tag to wear, so I’ll argue against the former.
To me, the purpose of guilds is to build community. That community could be small or it could be large. Certainly players can participate in many communities at the same time, but my worry is that allowing buffs/influence gain from non-represented guilds means that non-social, buffs-only guilds become the norm.
t
Not to represent, of course, just to join and leave on in the background for buffs.
Also, I think this would greatly increase the both the number of guilds and total amount of influence generated. You think 100% rep guilds are bad? Wait until guild leaders realize if they force members to join ALL FIVE of their guilds, they can earn 5x influence. I can see mapchat now…
Nub Hunta: Evil Emote Empire [JUMP] recruiting | 5x 500 guild | Must rep all 5 guilds | TS, Enjin, full buffs, lottery. Whisper 4 info.
The important question I have is WHY people want to end representation. My hunch is that people 1) want free influence for their bank guild and 2) want to join guilds that require 100% rep for buffs or special events without having to actually rep the guild.

Thank you, timmyf! I always thought you were a guy who acted smart, but you are truly smart. Thank you for doing your research and not just spit out kitten from your mouth like that drama-queen
I have a few long-standing disagreements with Romo, but as somebody who is very dedicated to this game, he certainly deserves more respect than you’re giving him.
Remember: argue against ideas not people.
Constructive criticism makes our ideas better and, in the long run, can make us better. Tearing somebody down only serves your ego.

I wonder if all the people saying they took way more than a 10% damage nerf remembered to set their traits?
Somebody on another thread claimed his non-crit autoattacks were hitting for 25% less. That doesn’t seem possible since the Ferocity changes should only affect crits.

Actually, i was right. Colin before release said guild wars 2 at release was bigger than ALL of guild wars 1.
So there. Read above for the link and proof.
Thanks for playing.
If Colin said that, I’m going to have to disagree with him. (I don’t see your link.)
To me, GW2 is roughly the size of GW1 after Factions came out. I think most of us just had higher expectations for the velocity of new content in GW2 and have been a bit disappointed that we haven’t gotten to explore more of the world.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
What i am interested in here however is how DE’s can relate to story telling and game play synergy and the overall evolution of Living World. Therefore within these bounds i think it is a great topic for this thread.
The funny part is that I think you guys already got it right: by changing events over time, cycling new ones in and old ones out, by introducing new stories in the open world over time, the world should feel changing and alive to players.
The problem, in my view, is that you gave up on that strategy within a few months after launch.
I’d love to see you try it, in a small way, by cycling DEs in a zone or two per patch to get more feedback. (And please specify which zones in the patch notes.)
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
My two cents:
1) As a small guild leader, I am terrified that I won’t be able to hold half of my members much longer. (The other half is real-life friends, so we’ll stick together.)
2) It sounds like there’s some major griefing going on with folks being in the mission area and not helping.
3) You could solve both of these problems by increasing the rewards for non-guilded players to match the rewards for guilded players minus commendations. That seems high enough to entice others to help, but still is enough of a benefit for guilded members to want to start the content themselves to earn commendations.

I can imagine if your playstyle is “map completion and world bosses,” Tequatl would seem very interesting, yes. Compared to something like Fractals, though, Teq is a little dull.

It is a sad state when players are trying to finish living story and get abused by the event farmers. I have not tried that section yet, but will be doing it shortly. I pretty much disregard the chat for that reason. Hopefully this won’t sour other people from enjoying the living story and game in general.
That’s not exactly what’s happened here.
There are a couple players who repeatedly find these farms that they consider “wrong” (they are correct – these farms are bad for the game and economy and should be fixed) and try to “fix” them by completing the events.
They don’t do it to “get the Living Story,” they do it to harass people. They do it repeatedly. They do it on characters with names that let everybody know what they are doing. Then they come to the forums and pretend to be innocent, posting screenshots of the in-game harassment they get (which is wrong and should also lead to bans.)
This is trolling or griefing. I’m fine with either term.
The first time I saw them post, I thought they were innocent too. Then I researched one of the players and realized that she’s done it over. And over. And over. And here they are again.
In another couple weeks, when the next fail-farm is found, watch. You’ll see those same names in chat, along with a “guild member” who was along for the ride.

aslong as people are still picking skyhammer, i’m still quitting!
This is why we can’t have nice things. One player can ruin the experience for nine others.
I think you mean… Why can one person who votes for skyhammer ruin the match for the other 9?
I wish people wouldn’t vote for Skyhammer either, but if you’re too much of a child to play a map you dislike for 10 whole minutes, you deserve a 24-hour ban.

I don’t like your suggested system at all. I’d much prefer to just craft Ascended armor for characters who need it. Which is pretty much none of my characters, so… yeah.
I think “do a whole ton of stuff without dying” is just as much, if not more, of a grind as “earn materials you get (or buy them) just by playing the game.”

It’s kind of sad to see the level of passion, anger and twisted logic they are seriously expressing over this issue.
I feel like Conski is responding very fairly to questions he’s getting. “Anger” doesn’t seem appropriate.
If anything, the anger is coming from others at Conski because of his post.
Do you all seriously believe there should not be ANY “you had to be there” items? Is that the only prestige-type Conski listed (limited time, high skill, expensive) that you think is bad? Or are either of the other two also unacceptable?

This is satire, right?

Opposition isn’t the same thing as griefing.
Then we need a new term for people who enjoy killing players who have no interest in player-to-player combat.
Queuing up for WvW is proof that you have interest in player to player combat. If you truly have no interest, you wouldn’t have clicked on the button that takes you there.
…except for if I have interest in what Scarlet is doing, of course.
(Previous example: I have interest in jumping puzzles.)

It’s not like it’s a completely crazy thing for the Game Director to leave for a big launch. And it’s borderline insane to suggest that they should have hired an additional game director for the China launch.
Video games are not retail, anyway, and I wish we’d quit with the rather tortured metaphors.
Your credibility just evaporated.. the little you had.
Just what does selling and servicing a product directly to consumers mean to you? If it isn’t retailing, what is it? And what does having YOUR exact label/interpretation matter anyway re the analogy.
Bottom line. It isn’t wise, for any business, regardless of how you label that business, to neglect a current, agitated customer base in favor of new customers.. for any length of time.
I’m just excited to find out that, for a moment there, some random guy on the internet thought I had even a little credibility! That’s pretty amazing. I’m sad that it’s gone now, but I’ll never forget the time we had together.
I agree that it is unwise for businesses to neglect their current customers in search for new ones. I also work in the enterprise cloud software world where this is commonplace. You know how much easier it is to get a bug fixed if it means losing a big sale than it is if a current customer is complaining about it?
I’m not saying it’s right. It’s just reality.
That said, I don’t agree that ArenaNet is neglecting its customer base. I do think it is neglecting the often hyperbolic, toxic, angry, vocal minority of its customers that have come here to post demands.
As far as I can tell, they’ve recognized that changes need to be made and are working on making those changes. For most of their customer base, that’s good enough. For a lot of people who require personal attention to their every concern on the forums, it’s not good enough.
You’re welcome to feel that way and I’m well aware that nothing I can say will change your mind. I’m just trying to ensure that the other viewpoint is also represented.

i dont see any reason that speaks against releasing it as outfit + armorsets
That’s because you don’t understand how their armor mesh/models work. Neither do I, in fact. So I just have to believe them when they say it’s a lot more work to make armor than it is outfits.

I assume, if you’re asking for “endgame,” what you really want is an endgame treadmill. That would be Fractals (and perhaps only Fractals.)
Fractals is a set of mini-dungeons that have an associated difficulty. You start off at level 1 and advance whenever you complete a set at or above your personal difficulty level. As the levels advance, there are new mechanisms that make the fights more difficult.
There is no max level, so you can continue on this treadmill until you get bored. Or forever. (Or, more realistically, until you can’t complete them anymore.)
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
You don’t get born and start to be directly a for example pope. Being the pope is a long chain of decisions in your life, your personal “career ladder”), that defines your role in your life andwhat you can become over time, because every profession has more specalized developed forms.
And this is where you forget that we’re in a game with alts and people who love to play different professions /characters. Currently suggestions how to unlock a subclass are all about having to play from 1-80 again, grind this and grind that. People already can’t stand that WvW profession is characterbound, how do you think they would react on subclasses?
This is pretty much where I stand. What if I decide I want to change? If I have to go and grind out a new subclass just because I want to try out a different build, that’s a big pain in my rear end.
You see this as opening up new opportunities. I see it as gating opportunities off.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
So you get really excited when they drop. Exotics were supposed to be significantly harder to get, but it turned out that crafting them was pretty cheap. That wasn’t ArenaNet’s original intent.

In the end, what you’re saying is “This thing I don’t like should work the way that I like, not the way it actually works, because reasons which are debateable at best and mostly just further indication I don’t like it.”
You’re ABSOLUTELY welcome to not like it and think it should be changed, but pretending it’s because Long List of Marginal Reasons (e.g. it’s a PvE achievement!) is pointless.
You, and others, wish you could get map completion without doing WvW because you don’t like WvW. That’s fine. Stop pretending that it’s some sort of crime and just be straight about your dislike of WvW.

I try to upgrade my gear every 5-6 levels, for reference. If you’re more than 6 levels behind on gear, consider buying something on the TP.
