Class balance:
Overall we’re looking to provide more builds for all classes, across all game types (PvE, PvP and WvW). We’re also looking to improve support potential for many classes. A lot of players have asked for this style of play to be stronger, so we’re looking to make it a more viable option.

These are some HIGH LEVEL previews, and you’ll still see number tweaks, trait fixes, and bug fixes for each class in the actual release notes, but we wanted you guys to have some transparency into the release:

Warrior
We’re looking to improve shouts so that support via shouts is more viable. This means moving Lung Capacity to Tier 1 so that you can take it along with Shrug it Off and Vigorous Shouts. The Warrior is in a pretty decent place overall right now, and sees play in many types of content, as well as in PvP/WvW.

Guardian
We increased the power of many support skills which weren’t seeing much play. We reworked Purging Flames: it now removes three conditions from allies in an area effect around the guardian on cast while still burning enemies (enemies that enter or exit the flames are still burned). Once the skill has been cast, it then reduces condition duration for allies who remain in the consecration’s area. It’s hawt. Literally. All meditation utility skills are now instant, and Focused Mind now grants fury on meditation use.

Ranger
Sick ‘Em will now apply ‘Revealed” to enemies they target. We want to introduce some counter play to Stealth (players have asked for that for a while), so we thought a pet “catching your scent” might be a cool way to insinuate some anti-stealth into the game.

To help Rangers support allies, we increased the ability ranger pets have to support allies. For instance, the Bear condition removal isn’t strong enough, so we’ll be improving that. Moas and Fern Hound will also be improved.

There will also be # changes to some of the Ranger weapons.

Thief
Venomous Aura was very difficult to use, as the radius was fairly tight. We’ve now increased that radius a bit, so that it’s easier to share venoms with allies without huddling closely together.

We’re also looking at shaving the efficiency of Flanking Strike slightly, so that it now only removes 1 boon instead of 2.

Also, pistol main hand may see one of its skills reworked to better support allies. We have multiple prototypes that we’re trying out, so we’ll have to see which we settle on by the next release.

Engineer
We did some reworks on the Elixir toolbelt (f-bar) skills. These just didn’t have enough cool play to them, and we wanted to improve them. Like:

  • Elixir S toolbelt is now guaranteed stealth.
  • Elixir B toolbelt now guarantees Stability along with the random current effect. Base recharge increased to 30 seconds.

We also did QoL (quality of life) improvements to skills that saw little play.

And finally, Engineer turrets will attack the Engineer’s target. They still take time to rotate to face the target, and they still have their respective cooldowns when firing. But this means the Engineer can focus damage on a single target by using their turrets.

Elementalist
We’re working on the staff in an effort to make it a stronger support weapon, and we also improved the conjure weapons so that they’re stronger for support. You’ll see improvements to all 4 of the conjure weapons to make them stronger and better for support.

We also increased the healing on Water Blast, the radius on Geyser and we reworked
Unsteady Ground to make it function more like line of warding.

Mes
To stay in line with the support theme, we wanted to find ways the Mesmer could support allies. We looked at Mantras, and just didn’t feel they were quite strong enough to do this, so we made some improvements.

Power Cleanse: We wanted to add some condition support, and made it so that this skill can remove 2 conditions from 5 allies.

Power Break also saw an improvement, as it now grants stability to nearby allies.

Nec
The Blood line underwent some tweaks, as it’s something that Necromancer players often feel is a lacking trait line. Vampiric Precision, Vampiric Rituals, Vampiric Master have all seen improvements.

For QoL (again, quality of life) we also improved the Life Force meter to show the actual bar better (moved slightly so it’s not competing with the skill icon for UI space), and the bar now shows your current Life Force amount, and the tooltip also shows current/max Life Force available. It makes it much easier to see how much Life Force you have, and lets you plan your engagements better.

Hey guys, here are some of the improvements you can expect to see for the October 15th release. Let us know what you think about them and we’ll take this into consideration. Some of these may not make it in for that release, but I wanted to give you guys a high level preview of what we’re working on and give you an opportunity to give us your feedback.

Trait tooltips
Traits will now have tooltips in the same way that skills do. This means that you’ll be able to see EXACTLY how long an effect lasts, what its cooldown is, etc. We want this system to be as transparent as possible for our players, so that they can make the best decisions when creating their profession builds.

Skill tooltips as they pertain to traits
As traits impact a skill, we’ve also made it so that as skills are impacted by a trait, the skill’s tooltips adjust accordingly. Again, we want players to be able to see these details in their builds, so that they can build their characters exactly the way they want! We’ll be using different colors to show this so that it’s easier for players to see!

Other Misc. fixes:
Tab Targeting Improvements

  • Now prioritizes Champs/Legendary, then players/clones, then everything else
  • Deselecting your target now resets tab selection history (aka, you’ll start tabbing through from the beginning if you deselect)
  • Can now tab target if your character can see the target (Was dependent on camera before)

Floater Improvements:
When you cause condition damage, all damage of a given type (burning, bleed, poison, etc.) will be grouped into a single # with an icon, making them much easier to read. This also allows players suffering from these conditions to more easily see them, and know when they should use condition removal. Note that this is an option, so that you can disable it if you want to (and return to the old system).

Better fast cast ground targeting:
We split this into 3 different options; so that players can more easily cater how ground targeting works for them.

  1. Double tap to cast
  2. Press the button to cast
  3. Release the button to cast
    SO GET YO CAST ON!

Pet HP split between PvE and PvP
We wanted to make pets and summons more viable in PvE/WvW while making sure they didn’t become too strong in PvP.

Launch will now be stun breakable
We felt it made it sense to let stun breakers also help you when you are launched, since this is consistent with how stun breakers respond to other control effects.

Wow it’s still down? I mean I realized you guys made a mistake….but….it’s still down?

P.S. Hope it’s fixed while I drive home from work….or else i’m probably going to get infracted for a post when I get home! lol

Teq didn’t spawn for over 12 hours and they didn’t even communicate anything. At least here there is some communication.

However once again Anets lack of proper user testing brings them undone.

I will never complain about “lack of proper user testing” since the release of Diablo 3, I think anet is doing a fantastic job!

“RLHawk you playing the same game ? 1 Good WvW patch and 1 half decent over 13months. PvE has gotten what ? 20-25 ptaches

Yes, I play it. And I play largely WvW. Perhaps you need some history? Obviously initially a lot of the focus was on seeing how well everything worked on such a large scale and doing lots of bug fixes. After a while the decision to remove Orbs of Power was made, because they did more harm than good. Shortly after that loot was improved. Then events were added to help breakout of your starting location when overwhelmed too long. Then Laurels were added with the ability to get them in only WvW, and load times were improved a lot. They made orange swords only show for larger battles, opening up all kinds of new strategies for sneak attacks. Leaderboards were added. Ranks were added, along with special abilities to use your rank points on. Culling was removed — before it was removed in PvE, mind you. More buying options were given so that more and more could be acquired through only playing WvW. Tons of improvements to siege and abilities were made. Obsidian Sanctum was given its own map. Traps were added. The ability for commanders to ping maps and draw paths was added. (Not strictly WvW, but has the biggest influence there.) Matchmaking was improved. Rewards were increased again greatly with new incentives for PvEers to do WvW for help buying ascended items. Siege blueprints were made trade-able, balancing their cost and encouraging their further use. Rewards were again increased greatly. Borderland bloodlust was added, and in today’s update again rewards have been increased as well as both incentives to play and to do well. And then seasons starting in a couple of weeks with new rewards and incentives.

On top of all of that, nearly every patch for the last year at least has WvW specific bug fixes and minor improvements to rewards, gameplay, and balance in the update notes. And new and improved rank abilities have been added almost every update since they came out, as well as new finishers.

For the gametype that WvW is, I’m really not sure what you expect or want. Do you want celebrations to affect WvW more? Do you want world bosses and events and story content to be added to WvW? I’m assuming that Borderlands Bloodlust and Ranks & Abilities are the only things you consider decent updates, and I’d agree that they’re probably the most game changing. But the beauty of WvW is that each weak is its own story. It doesn’t /need/ progressive story content added to it, because you and I playing it is what creates that story.

As I see it, WvW is a huge focus of theirs. But to make changes similar to PvE changes at such a pace would be a big mistake in my opinion. WvW is a very different game type.

RP weapon skins?

GrandmaFunk.3052

thats not to say a scroll or a book replacement skin for other weapon types wouldnt work

It wouldn’t work because your weapon skin allows your opponents to know what weapon you are using.

if you use an axe that looks like a book, when foci (or any one handed weapon, as you suggest) can also look like a book, then that hides important tactical information from your opponents, which is an unfair advantage.

ie: Your axe looks like an axe so that other players know you’re using axe skills.

Still trying to determine how this is so much worse than Anet locking cross campaign looks behind the makeover kit in GW1. People were fine with that…. but suddenly a similar thing here isn’t? At least here, you can convert gold to gems and get it, in GW1 there is no such thing. It’s fork over $10 or gfy….

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

You know what would be a great thing? More reasonable expectations of the community.

Expansion dodging

The Living story is a “testing program”. They throw in different concepts and players are giving their feedback. The ones they like will be noted and developed.
One example is: they added various events in the world but people didn’t seem too interested to discover them. In the end they managed to create the Scarlet invasions to see if people are doing the events if announced in the chat. People respended positively to this type of mechanic.
So, I guess they are gathering information “on live” about what people enjoy and what not. Instead of working on a big expansion and then have a lot of bugs in it, they can make small additions and people can give feedback on it.

I use KB strategically. If there is a unit “solo” when a group of them is standing near by, I will kb that unit in to his buddies to group them up for AoE.

However since champs have defiant, your example is extremely limited and a very rare occurance. Rarely do I ever see a “zerg” even bother to take down defiant stacks. And having to regroup away from banners should never cause the zerg to “fail” in taking out the champ. If it somehow does, thats a bad zerg with crappy dps.

Hi All,

I wanted to comment about the incident that happened recently in-game, surrounding some negative community interaction from a member of the ArenaNet staff.

Simply put a big mistake was made by one of our employees, for which he is both very upset and sorry. He allowed his personal feelings to affect his interactions in-game whilst representing ArenaNet, and this is absolutely unacceptable.

Like all players, we are human, and all have our opinions on the game. However these opinions should never disrupt other player’s enjoyment of the things they love. On top of this we have worked very hard to create a community that is respectful to one another, and for this behavior to have occurred while a developer is representing ArenaNet is doubly saddening.

We all cherish the opportunity to play with the community, and we absolutely rely on you all for in game feedback, and personally I hope that this incident does not hamper what has so far been an amazing relationship and opportunity for us all.

I would therefore like to sincerely apologize for this behavior on behalf of our staff member. We are taking steps to address the incident and for his part, he is very sorry for behaving in the manner in which he did.

Regarding Guild game play, please understand it is extremely important to us, and an area we are paying a great deal of attention to, so please do be patient with the developers who work tirelessly on making WvW the very best it can be, they have a great deal of respect for you all, and value your collaboration in pushing this pioneering mode forward. Also please note this member of staff is not on the WvW team.

Finally, World vs. World is a free-for-all battle. Our expectation of staff is that they should be playing, and enjoying the game like everyone else, and not being disruptive or disrespectful to others.

And in this spirit I hope we can move forward, and continue, what has up to this point, been a great community/developer relationship. One that I know our team massively values and loves.

Thank you all for your time and i hope you have a lovely weekend,

ChrisW

Yeah because Seasons are such a HUGE attraction. Come play our broken open-world PvP for some meta achievements and a gimmicky finisher. I think I heard the wind blowing…

The results of WvW will actually matter week to week in some meaningful way, and you get a nice chest of loot for being on the winning server. There’s a lot of activity in the player base preparing for season one and I think you’ll see a lot of people come back, play more, and try wvw out to try and help their server since these are the matches that “matter”.

I’m more excited for this than I was for Tequatl or SAB. People are still sitting around doing Tequatl and failing repeatedly because they want the achievements and hope that they can get some loot; once the WvW Season meta achievements roll out I suspect those people are going to be flooding the area trying to figure out what’s going on, and unlike Tequatl they have a better chance of having fun if they’re just casually doing WvW.

They’re also not direct competing the start of season 1 with Twilight Assault anymore, meaning that TA will probably be all farmed out by the time this update hits.

man its just soooo funny heavy wvwers really dont get how much more attention they get then pvper and still kitten

You have to be joking.

What have sPvP players asked for and didn’t get?

Players: Paid tournaments don’t pop!
ANet: single round tournies so you don’t have to wait more than a few minutes

Players: We want more maps!
ANet: Have 3!

Players: We want a ladder to see who the best are!
ANet: Yes, my precious flower.

Players: we want to run our own tournies!
ANet: custom arenas

Players: We want to spectate matches!
ANet: yes my special flower. Anything for you!

Players: Premades stomp pugs!
ANet: solo queue

Players: Necros, warriors and rangers are garbage
ANet: Here you go, now they’re great!

Players: We want more game modes!
ANet: they’re coming soon my special flower.

You get almost everything you ask for, except maybe PvE rewards for sPvP and fixing it so ranked matches don’t start with less than 5v5.

we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable

I’d just like to make a note of one thing that I think people aren’t considering when they transfer to stacked worlds. You will not, repeat will not, be able to receive the reward based on overall world place in the league, unless you achieve the meta achievement for the season. If you aren’t able to get into WvW much, you won’t get the rewards. So it is absolutely taking a risk to transfer to a world that has a large WvW population.

Try not to charge in head first to a pack of enemies that use crowd control. Use ranged attacks, pets, illusions etc.

I can think of seven ways to avoid mob knock backs off the top of my head:

Dodge
Stability
Block
Reflection
Stun
Blind
Fear

Chilling an enemy also helps because it will put the knock back on longer cool-down.

Welcome to playing a game that is close realty life things changes fast to the point where you will get lost at one point. Most of the time this is due to not being able to keep up or “old age.” It happens to us all you just got to adapted as best as you can and try to enjoy your self in doing so or what the point of doing any thing if you MUST do every thing 100% before it goes away. I mean are you going to all the live events in your down town? Are you getting every new app or smart phone that comes out? Are you getting every new gaming system and games as they come out and betting them in a few days to keep up? Are you watching every moving tv show and playing every song reading every book? You cant and if you keep stressing about these things you will never have fun in a game or in real life.

Remember, don’t go by the forums to see how people like this game. Most of the people that go to gaming forums only go to complain.

I am really enjoying this game. Its true, i have only been playing for a month and half but it takes up a good amount of my time. Most of the time i have no idea what items i need to get but the fun part is figuring that out.

When i started i had no idea what the LS was. I didn’t start realizing what was going on till the end of the Queen’s speech. This time i was way more involved with Tequatl and have been having a blast. I spent all my gold on exotic Valkryie armor for my Ele to the point it took me a few days to get enough gold to finish it. At that time i was broke but then i was able to beat Teq each of the last 3 days and i’m already back up to 10g witch is good because i haven’t been doing any other farming since i’ve been busy.

So to sum up, the more i learn, the more fun it gets for me.

I think sometimes in the intense debates about stuff on this board, which I sometimes participate in, this fact does get a little lost. There is a lot about GW2 which degrades the fun, or distracts from the fun, and indeed it’s why I stopped for a few months, but getting back into it, that’s my big takeaway – so long as you can find the right class and spec for you:

GW2 is basically pretty fun.

Just messing around in the world, doing zone completion (and all that entails), zerg-surfing in WvW (which I keep accidentally calling RvR – it’s not yet as good as DAoC, but could be one day), trying out new dye looks, new gear appearances, doing the new world bosses (except Teq – he’s got potential but is too frustrating), and so on – it’s really quite a lot of fun in a way that most MMOs are not, and I really hope they can continue to make it feel that way.

There is some stuff which probably should be fun but isn’t quite there yet – dungeons are a bit too dependent on detailed pre-knowledge, Fractals can be very fun but can be a tad tedious, depending on which you get, sPvP is a bit too same-y and faceless (it’s good – not great – good though), the Living World stuff is a bit too “GIT IT DUN!” because of the short time scales, Dailies are almost fun, now, so that’s an improvement but could do with more, and gearing, sadly, is little fun outside PvP, because elsewhere it’s just zerker or gtfo. More fun doesn’t necessarily mean more rewards, either – rewards support fun (and prevent you having to do anti-fun things to compensate for “wasted” fun time), they rarely create it – but it does mean being careful about them.

But again, I keep coming back to how basically fun the actual, underlying game is. how fun the abilities are, how it’s fun to combine them, to defeat normal enemies, veterans and champs, how it’s fun to dodge abilities and so on.

You know what other game was like that? GW1. Yeah, GW2 isn’t as awesome in that regard as GW1 was after two expansions, but it’s getting there. So I think the devs are, in a lot of ways, on the right track. I really hope the new skills and their acquisition help with this fun (hopefully involving the open world, not instances!).

Came to GW2 because I loved GW1. Stayed until now (and will) because although there is a lot I’m not happy with (mostly because of how GW1 worked) there is still a lot more I do like with its variance from the tried and true formulas of other MMOs.

Put this into perspective. After getting a new comp with better graphics a month ago, I decided to give TERA a try because it’s now FTP, rolled a priest. At first, I was all, oooh look at the graphics, the huge kitten monster fights, ooh third person skillshots! Then I was all, wait, why can’t I run while attacking? Why is dodging a skill instead of double tap? Good god, what the hell do I do with all these skills at the same time… why is leveling so boring? Oh god, QUESTS?! Kill X monsters, find X items, I’m not really reading any of the quest dialogue, I’ve got like 50 random quests sitting in my log that I’m not doing because of crappy exp… I’m in a dungeon, doing healing stuff, oh god this is boring, I just sit there and don’t attack to not get aggro and watch bars go up and down… kitten this I’m going back to GW2.

I dunno.. I was attracted to GW2 because the devs just seemed to “get it”. Their manifesto was a refreshing change of attitude. Some people may feel like they didn’t live up to it, while others feel they did. Those things weren’t important to me…. what mattered is that they seemed to have the sincere goal of providing the most player-friendly mmo experience ever designed. People will debate their successes and failures for years, but what you can’t deny is that they are aiming for something uniquely exciting here. It might not be to everyone’s taste all the time, but when they hit their mark, its some of the best gaming ever designed.
