Casuals are actually more likely to still be playing the same game 6 months, 12 months, 2 years, etc. down the line. They’re the ones that end up being the long-term bread and butter of a developer… the ones who are still spending money on in-game stores long after the flash and interest of launch has passed. They may only log in a few hours a week, but 100+ weeks out, they’re still logging in… they’re still buying mini sets and clothes off the cash shop, etc.
Hardcore players play in short, intense bursts… and are gone as soon as they achieve whatever goal (like obtaining a legendary) they’ve set for themselves. They’re less likely to rely on cash shop transactions beyond meeting initial needs early on (like buying gems to sell for an initial gold stash). They have a particular idea of what it means – to them – to “beat” the game, and once that is accomplished, they’re gone. They’re also unlikely to be lured back into playing outside of major expansions that they again come back to “beat” and then are gone.
Hardcore players are also the ones least likely to take a long view of whatever changes to the game the dev enacts. They’re the ones most likely to pack up their toys and go home in a rage over anything they perceive as impacting their (very short-term) goal of “beating” the game, regardless of whether the change is good for the longevity of the game. They’re not concerned with whether that change is necessary to keep the game relevant in a year… they’re concerned with whether it means it might take them another 2 hours to “beat” the game.
This is why MMOs cater to the casuals… because the casuals’ source of enjoyment isn’t heavily based on “winning fast” and moving on to something else they can “beat”.
I love this game too, and the creators did an amazing job on the living world and on everything else.
But they SURE like to brag.

…ArenaNet found a way (just like “life” did in “Jurassic Park”) to defeat the crushing forces of MMORPG’s and also the shear force that is WoW.
It is indeed amazing… even I have had doubts. Hopefully NCSOFT will figure out that their current MMORPG “Investment” Wildstar is a Failed Project and thus once again restore full funding levels to advance GW2 at a fast rate of speed and with the epic scale of content only matched by WoW. NCSOFT simply has too many MMORPG’s out there to mangage anyone of them to a scale that is Warcraft.
No matter: I look forward to spending some “quality time” with the ArenaNet staff in the Seattle event this weekend…
Indeed it is so…
Seriously, if you cannot accept the “lack” of this feature after a year (and countless futile discussions about it), it is really time for you to move on to another game. They will also have open world dueling here. And everything else you miss in GW2. The majority of your posts suggests that you want this game to be exactly like other games you know, well, then go and play them. Possibly even mounts there or whatever else you liked in WoW or whereever.

As a “casual” I can give you my perspective. I have no problem if Anet wants to put out challenging content so long as they continue to put out some content for us mortals. I have no real problem if there are better rewards for that content so long as the game does not evolve into a gear progression game. Specifically, if they want some special skins or titles buried behind “raid” walls for highly organized teams of hardcore players, I personally don’t care unless the rewards provide better stats. At that point, we are into gear progression…which is why I left WoW.
You just need a Rytlock to burst into your room
Today some players found a bot in Queensdale. Some Mesmers ported it onto one of those balloon towers and because it auto "f"s constantly it took the balloon to DR. That was pretty funny.
Guild Wars 2 rocks.
Seriously.
There’s a bit more to it. In multiplayer games, the players themselves are part of the content of the game. It is important to have a strong, vibrant community in game, both to play with and to play against. The player that sticks around for the game and isn’t mean spirited is adding to the quality of game, making it more appealing to the public at large and making buying the game a more attractive investment. Players who don’t buy a thing from the gem shop are contributing to the profits of the game indirectly in this manner, both with new sales and with making the game enjoyable enough for players to want to spend gems in it.

erm that happens if u have the culling setting set to lowest. if u have the low character models it always looks like the player is hitting u instead of the rezzing animations. i’ve noticed that in wvw when they changed the culling settings.
I just wanted to post my little experience about Guild Wars 2 as well as my opinion on the game.
First, a little about me: I’m a pretty hardcore gamer (or at least I used to be, when I had way more free time) and I started GW2 about 4 months after its release. I was honestly blown away by the quality of the game. I’m not exactly a MMO player and I mostly play RTS, old school RPGs (yes, the “real” kitten and other RPGs from 2000, or as I like to call it the golden age. Anyway…), so genuinely loving a MMO was a first for me.
I played GW2 for several hours every day for about two months or so, then I sort of started playing less and less and eventually stopped. I don’t really know why, I still thought the game was great, I just wasn’t passionate anymore somehow. I think the game was just failing to grasp my full interest after I was done leveling and exploring the whole map, and I kind of need to feel really hooked to keep on playing on a regular basis. What happened after that is I would pretty much log once a week or so, do a JP and log off.
Recently, I started playing on a daily basis again, and I have to say I’m impressed with the amount of stuff that has been going on. I paid attention to the events and the Living Story stuff on Facebook and checked the website once in a while when I was inactive, so I could tell a fair amount of content was being added, but still didn’t play. So now, I’m playing every day and doing the Scarlet events mostly, although I haven’t tried the Gauntlet thingy yet.
I’d merely like to say that I’m truly enjoying myself again and that I find Living Story very entertaining. I think it’s what a MMO needs – content which is delivered on a regular basis without having to wait for expansions or big patches, content which keeps evolving, “lives” and keeps the game fresh. Granted, Living Story does have quite a few flaws, the story is a bit lackluster and it can get messy, but I find that overall it is satisfying and that it’s a step in the right direction. I do hope ANet keeps going that way and manages to improve on the plots (a little rework of the story mode couldn’t hurt either, by the way), but for now I’d like to say thank you ANet for the work you’re delivering on Guild Wars 2 and keep it up!
PS: I still don’t like what you did with Trahearne, but I forgive you.
We’re so used to playing GW2 that from someone new to the game or from another MMO this game is very different.
I just want to remind folks again, the features and content you’d traditionally find in an expansion will absolutely be added to Gw2. The thing we haven’t decided is what form the release of that content would be presented in, be it a traditional expansion, living world, or some other form.
Well nothing bad happened during the Super Adventure Box…
A princess got kidnapped. That’s something bad that happened.
@ OP if something good happened what would we do? Sing and dance around a campfire? Seriously though if you can come up with some scenario where something good happens and we can do something interesting, I wouldn’t be against it.
um….no….
Just because you perceive that there is nobody wandering around doesn’t make it so.
There will always be those who take the easiest, most expedient way from point A to point B, but there are wandering bands of players as well.
Removing waypoints will have the opposite effect. People will not come to the zones that have no waypoints unless they absolutely have to.
So, while I respect that you have an opinion, I also respectfully disagree.
Yeah, congratulations. 3 out of, (how many servers?), are full like that. The rest have maybe 4 people on non-patch days, 10 on patch days. Again, you guys continue to show “proof” that guild wars 2 is not dead. It’s not dead on patch days for sure, but every other day besides patch days are dead. Completely and utterly dead. It’s alright if you don’t believe me, because I couldn’t care less. You can watch the playerbase slowly decline into oblivion when these continuous living story patches continue to be repetitive. Don’t get me wrong I like GW2, but the playerbase on my server and many other’s is nearly non-existent.
I believe your numbers are 100% accurate. 3 servers are full and all the rest of them have 4 people on them…and 10 on patch days.
Or you have an agenda and you’re exaagerating to try to make a point, which not only doesn’t make the point, but makes it seem like you’ll say anything to prove your point.
I’ve been on more than 3 servers guesting and I’ve never seen a server that has 4 people on it…even if I’ve been to some dead zones before.
I think Galtrix is counting the number of people in his immediate vicinity. In Southsun. On a Tuesday. Early morning. Near the champion Karka. I find that area to be lacking people as well. What’s up with that!
Watch this Friday’s livestream.
I loved Scarlet’s Playhouse !! It was so much fun, I had a great time doing it <3
After the disaster that was Liadri, and the horrible achievements that go with her, this was absolutely awesome ^3^
The end fight with Scarlet wasn’t too easy and it wasn’t too hard. It was perfect!!
It’s how Liadri should have been. It’s how she should be, when the gauntlet comes back.
Thank yooouu (=^_^=)/
As Vayne stated, nothing you’re getting from Living Story content is making you more powerful (therefore required to progress) in GW2. Basically, the big difference is this: In GW2, you’re rewarded if you do. In treadmill games, you’re punished if you don’t.
It seems to be working now. Talked to Vorpp in DR again and this time I was let in. Don’t really need the items on you as long as Achievement gets marked as done.
You can do dailies to finish up the meta.
If you are planning on doing 13 invasions, you can no longer be considered casual.
Some PvE commanders have spent 100 gold on the commander tag to help people out, to help guildies out during guild events, to help point out where to attack following today’s event, for large scale event farming, to point things out on the map and for various other reasons.
It just seems that some people stereotype PvE commanders. If someone spends 100 gold on something with the goal to help the community out, can people not throw abuse at that person; saying that they are doing a bad job. (Wording is often stronger than this!
) (I’m aware people buy commander tags for various reasons, but there are many who buy the tag to help people out in PvE.)
If you think a commander is doing something wrong, why not whisper them and educate them or tell them how you think would make the situation better, rather than publicly abusing them in map chat. After all, 100 gold is a lot of money and many people spent it to help other people out.
(This isn’t a post debating the various reasons why people brought commander tag. It’s just a plea for people not to throw abuse at those who spent 100 gold to help the community out.)
On the upside, i have seen some great play this event with this new update, with commanders splitting up and taking groups of people to the various events. high five folks!
Joe :-)

I am just amused by the fact that it is a salsa and darkmatter powered portal device.
So I guess this is the first big livng story patch we have seen. I just got back from the massive event in fireheart rise. We had about 8 commander pins on the map, each with about 30 peopel easily on them. I have a pic of what is undoubtedly 80 people, and it runs so smooth. We acc failed the event. We had 30 secs left on it and 5 percent on the last wave. It was fun though. Thanx Anet this is a hundred times better than last shores. Its seriously impressive in terms of capability. All the different factions, the massive amounts of DE’s. This is exactly what I wanted to see happen with DE’s and the Living Story.
