@colin

maby you should than not make a blogpost with things you will give us this year BUT

a blogpost with things you work on

i guess people would be happy to read things like: we work on housing but far from release, we have 3 dungeons in beta status, we had to restart work on precursor crafting and its back to alpha status ………

something like this

That would also break the company policy of what we’re allowed to discuss in regards of what is in development

Though I wonder if we went a little more broad and kept a rolling “top categorical issues” the community team communicated or owned that summarizing high level things the development team is aware of and might or might not be working on, but see’s as core fundamental issues to address, and players just had constant brainstorm threads on those topics – if it’d at least get us halfway there.

Hey all, while the topics being brought up in the last couple of posts posts may be interesting to discuss, let’s all circle back to talking about the game and its characters in this thread.

Thanks much!

This topic only came up because of the OP falsely and unfairly blaming feminists for the aspects of Braham’s character he does not like. So, it is relevant to the opening post.

Interesting that you selectively ignore the rest of my points about the other characters but I digress, people will always nitpick the smallest details (ha I guess I can talk!)

Look, lets look at this from another POV: Sometimes someone has to say the other sides thoughts not just the “Taimi for President” group but the side that actually says “Look there are reasons people don’t all exclusively like the Living Story cast.”

Now then let me point out some new facts based on Dragons Reach Part 2 that I specifically would like to point out:

Taimi

DR Part 2 was exactly what I was saying with Taimi, a scenario where Taimi has to actually be supported BY the rest of the team finally happened (though I’m a little sad you didn’t at least add “Boss! Braham! Help me!” in that situation since I felt like a spare part >.>).

This was also the first time we got to see Taimi ACT like a Teenager, which I was happy with, Taimi actually behaved irrationally and stupidly just because she wanted a little glory hog for herself and as a consequence she got into more trouble than it was worth.

Some people might look at it in the context of “No she made it she deserves credit for it!” Yes she does but at the end of the day nobody should be given a cuddle for nearly destroying their own prototype save the world device.

It was good to see her have a little taste of Hubris gone wrong for a change and I do hope from this point on Taimi has a bit more respect for Braham instead of always calling him an idiot or making gentle reference jokes to it since he did essentially SAVE her.

Speaaaaking of which:

Braham

I didn’t like Braham in DR part 1, to be honest, DR part 1 was incredibly weak and the “off camera” mother/son dialogue was cringe worthy, I really hope they never try that stuff again because it was bad design.

I get they were trying to show Eir and Braham are estranged but it didn’t work, because for the most part, I did not get to see ENOUGH to see they were slowly warming to each other.

That said, I can at least see they are trying to make him smarter and grow over time which is showing, I just hope it sticks and evolves with the character which would make him a tad more interesting to interact with.

Rox

DR part 1 was the selling point for Rox, this was where she truly became the star of the show, obviously part 2 she didn’t have a major part to play but that’s fine, in Rytlocks story she was pivotal and it showed.

This was the first time I genuinely LIKED Rox since she broke away from her notice me senpai Rytlock fangirly behavior and moved into a more using her present logic to make a point of Rytlocks plan being pretty kitten risky.

She was genuinely useful and genuinely involving in this story.

Jory

I wanna know what she did with Bel’s body, if she actually tried to ress it and failed, or if she just buried it and met her family, because her story was obviously the weakest but considering there was virtually no char involvement that’s fine, I can forgive it.

Kasmeer

We obviously can see something big is going on with Kas and that’s an interesting thing, that said I fear Kasmeers interesting quirks were WELL overshadowed unfortunately by the EXTREMELY welcome return of our favorite cynic, Canach who essentially stole the show of part 2.

That said, Kas without Jory isn’t a first timer, she was introduced without Jory in south sun so its interesting that she’s conveniently in the same story content Canach is in.

I also liked Anise a hell of a lot in this present stuff, she was a big major player in what was going on, juicy things.

But focusing on the group:

Kas was okay, Jory didn’t have anything but its forgivable because of that, Rox got a lot better, Braham is slowly improving and Taimi finally got a lesson in humility.

Sooo, I’m happy, long story short.

I am entirely content and look forwards to Episode 5 though I do agree with a lot of people saying this game does need an expansion and I do also believe that as much as I like the Biconics or have come to, I believe we need a break from them when S2 is over and they need a break from us too.

Perhaps bring back minor chars like the consortium and Kiel and flesh them out in Season 3.

I was told Gnashblade had some big part to play in S2 somewhere, in an earlier interview about S2 (cant remember the exact words, something about him being angry at Kiel and slowly getting revenge for it).

I’ve only read the first post, but that’s all I need to see right now..

Phant you’re really off base. Why would you ever suggest nerfing a class based on available armor? You need to nerf the armor.

Was D/D overpowered before celestial hit the scene? Honestly ask yourself that. No. It wasn’t.

Celestial is and was the issue. Celestial needs nerfing across the board or removed in PvP. Simple.

Strength runes need the same. So do balth runes.

It is upsetting when people suggest nerfing your class based on one set of armor which makes it overpowered. That’s an obvious miscarriage of balance, and I hope others realize that.

So one last thing, if people are abusing macros to heal more, that’s obviously a bug that needs fixed. Don’t put it in your vendetta for more nerfs.

Seems very poorly thought out in my opinion, to suggest nerfing an entire amulet for one single build on one single profession.

^ that makes more sense than anything I have seen in this thread.

Edit: Ele is a celestial class it make perfect sense celestial works best on them.

They can’t balance the elementalist at all and as usual they just break it more:

“Hey were gonna make meteors have a big fat huge red circles so that now everyone will jump out of it before the first meteor hit the ground after 3 seconds. "
- “Yay thank you”

“We’re also gonna make your 2 most useful traits cost 2 more points each for the sake of build diversity.”
- “Yay thank you”, we replied again

“We’re also going to nerf your mobility with daggers by 50%.”
- “amazing”, we said (/sarcasm)

“Oh and you cant no longer heal conditions in mist form or do anything beside run away”
- “Right….” (and we thought, wtf is that balance team doing?)

“Oh and remember that tornado useless skill that you’ve been using to bump up your damage because your so squishy you have to puts all your points in defence?”
- “yeah…” (gosh please don’t do that again)

“Well, we prefer when it was totally useless”

About that blix exploit....

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: islarose.7356

islarose.7356

You’re [edit] wrong.. the only reason players began to form up and try to stop the event being farmed was because when they tried legitimately run the event chain previously they were abused by the #bandofexploitbrothers.

Change servers sound great.. except within a few days every map copy you could get into was doing the same thing…

It takes an action to cause a reaction… blix farmers began purposely harassing players that did not want to conform to there exploitation of the shelter event and as always happens that kind of abuse causes the reaction and yeah, players get fed up of being called a noob, a c*** etc etc and began to learn how to use the failtrains own tactics of scaling the event to spawn champs.. by simply aggroing the mobs onto it whilst ressing the NPC’s to almost full health and waiting for their time to fully res them.

Curse Shore became vacant across most parts of the map since Blix became so overly exploitable by the hoards and the LFG system utilised to spread the exploit virally across the player base..

I for one am glad ANET have at least looked into putting an end to it… hopefully the worst offenders of this exploitation will see actions taken on their accounts, but I doubt that is going to happen, which just says its fine to exploit for as long as you can until a patch comes.. that’s not a deterrent merely a mini game of chase.

Cursed shore was dead prior to this farm and the foxfire cluster farmers. Megaservers killed the temple events, there were other champ trains that were more convenient elsewhere. In other words, it was a ghost town before recent events. Prior to this farm, I’d rarely seen anyone at the Blix event (with exception to when the defend event was a major farm) – moreover if the constant “in combat” WP status is anything to go by. It was not the Blix farm that made the map a ghost town. Even in the beginning (first 6 mos) I used to farm for ori and ancient wood, and I rarely saw other players – aside from temple events and other material farmers. Now people are occasionally champ training through Orr, but it’s still not even close to the scale of FGS or QD.

And no, people didn’t form up to ruin the event because they were against the farmers, they did it because they had fun getting a rise out of thwarting a group trying to accomplish something. Probably for the same reason the farmers were there in the first place; because what else are they going to do?

It was the same with QD, people intentionally ruined what others were working toward, because they’re trolls. I just find it amusing that people are complaining about one event on a map of several, as if they would have done it if the train wasn’t there.

It honestly does not matter if this gets nerfed to lack rewards like other events. There are more out there. If you really want farms like this to stop? You should probably support the idea that they’re a significant consequence of this game’s reward structure.

- Events are more rewarding if failed.
- Nerfs to champ bags mean people will farm more.
- Low drop rates for desired items mean people will farm more.
- Low rewards in general mean people will farm more.
- Items of value require incessant grinding? People will farm more.
- What does acquiring significant amounts of gold require? Farming or really good RNG luck.

Don’t like farming? You probably don’t like TP flippers manipulating markets either. So perhaps you should jump on the “fix the reward system” bandwagon, rather than railing against those that are trying to work with what is available. If you just enjoy kittening off a group of players, keep trolling, I guess. There will always be those who don’t adhere to “don’t feed the troll” practices. But it’s at your own material loss. There will always be another farm, until there isn’t, in which case those people will likely stop bothering to play.

Getting banned because Anet made failures more rewarding than successes, and doesn’t properly reward normal gameplay? Fine. Alienate those zergs of players across various servers. It’s not like there aren’t more games out there that make gameplay feel rewarding. They may not be as pretty, but at least your time is worth something.

You don’t need anything above blues to complete almost every section this game offers. Blues and greens drop so much, you can outfit all your characters without even needing to buy from the trading post. YOU choose to use exotics and buy runes/sigils, but they are far from needed.

Humans kill millions under the order of the 5 gods.

They may have killed millions – but so did the charr – and not under the order of the five gods. Maybe under the order of Balthazar, for some, but not all five and not all millions killed. There are those who killed in the name of Grenth and Abaddon too, but they weren’t ordered – that’s the case of individual fanatics and to blame all of humanity for such actions is akin to blaming all muslims for Osama Bin Ladin. An act that is sadly done…

  • Humans then proceed to take creation of other races and make them as their own (example: Bloodstone was created by the Seers to hide magic from the Dragons).
  • Humans rewrite the history in their favor, justifying more horrid actions against everyone, even themselves.
  • Traces of the Elder Dragons are pretty much wiped clean, except for the information written by the still existing ancient races. There can’t be entities, which power drives the six gods into silence, so they have to be erased from history!

As explained by Angel McCoy, the misdocumentation of history was not a deliberate act. It was not an act of maliciousness as you seem to be claiming, but an act of ignorance. Humanity claimed the Bloodstones and magic itself was made by the Six Gods because they didn’t know any better. They came from a world with next to no magic into a world which had its magic drained/sealed away, and suddenly they’re given a gift by the gods (when they unleashed the sealed magic); what else were they to think, unless told specifically by the gods “we did not create it, but freed it.” Apparently the gods didn’t. Though the gods had erased history once before (Abaddon), and hid things from the humans, it is not humans at fault and the gods likely had good reason.

Humans start worshipping other deities, like the Grawl, starting their great civil wars…

The only humans that worshiped other deities – that’s known to us – would be splinter cults, and those groups did not wage wars.

Humans have caste system, off which many just try to increase their own power at the cost of others, Bandits and White Mantle cult.

I think you should look up what a “caste system” is. Because that’s not what humanity has.

Sylvari have the problem of being dragon minions.

Player speculation that is still fully unsupported.

Norn have the problem of their philosophies of life, this drives many to join Sons of Svanir cult, cause the most common interest is to gain more strength.

The norn’s culture doesn’t drive many to join the Sons of Svanir – the norn’s culture promotes the self, obtaining power through the self, becoming a legend through the self. The Sons of Svanir seek power through Jormag, that is the opposite of common norn culture. And it isn’t all about strength, it’s about renown. You can have the weakest norn ever become a proud symbol of the people if it had the most well-known legend out there. It’s just that most norn seek their legends through the preys they hunt and kill.

Charr have the issue of group that want to keep warring with humans, the renegades, to which some Charr defect into.

There are far more issues with the charr than one measely group of renegades. Flame Legion, a culture built upon war and conquest, a militant hierarchical system imbedded throughout the entire culture (an issue because it’s easily corruptible – one evil Imperator and a whole quarter of the charr race must follow his orders or risk death/becoming gladium).

While it might be bad that Charr reclaimed their homelands, it wasn’t justified for humans to do what they did since their arrival on Tyria…

You should read The Ecology of the Charr and not believe the modern charr’s biased sayings. Specifically this line: “No longer clamoring over the same territories, the unified Charr spread throughout the northern reaches of their homeland, and down into the lands east of the Shiverpeak Mountains. The Charr subjugated or destroyed any and all who dared defy them within their territories; they were masters of all they surveyed.” which proves that Ascalon was conquered by the charr. The original inhabitants arem ostly unknown, but there are heavy hints to dwarves and it’s known that grawl are native to Ascalon and were subdued by the charr.

Five out of six Gods directed humans to wage war and genocide against the Tyria’s original races, what a kitten move from the gods.

Please read this and this – you will find that you’re pretty much stating the opposite of what’s the case. Only Balthazar is outright stated to have wanted humanity to wage war. Melandru – the one you don’t count in that five – wanted peace. Dwayna, however, also wanted peace for humanity. Abaddon is known to have given magic to all sapient races, including the charr, equally but uniquely. The stance that Lyssa and Grenth/Dhuum had is unknown. It’s far from 5 out of 6 wanting to wage war.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Racial Sympathy Limitations are Nonsense

I kind of like the idea. It gives the opportunity to give stronger racial identities in the store because certain races are closer to the minor races than others.

Also, I’m glad the charr don’t give a flip about quaggan. It’s one part of the game that enables them to make your race matter. I want my race to matter and I dislike it when racial identities are eroded simply so that outliers can exist. Save that stuff for your role playing.

To me, racial sympathies are part of racial identities. I like that there are boundaries, they enhance my immersion in the world and help to make real the races of Tyria.

Racial Sympathy Limitations are Nonsense

Dustfinger.9510

Every every possibility of every individual can’t be accounted for. Some things just have to be represented by the general tendancies of the race.

‘Every possibility’ is one extreme while acting like a generic stereotype is another. Those are two extremes, and there can be a middle ground. Especially in a quest involving choices

You don’t have to put many choices in order to avoid the whole race to seem as if they have the same personality and prejudices

Without a-net putting ‘every possibility’ in the game, there is always going to be something that falls back on the race generalization.

So picking one instance (this one) where they didn’t put a whole lot of choices and saying that causes the entire race to have the same personality means that the would need to put every possibility because any one instance that doesn’t have those choices can make it seem like the entire race is the same things.

So, unless they put in “every possibility”, there will always be something.

Well who’s the selfish party here?
Is it the person who doesn’t simply take the 30 seconds to log out then back in thereby being put onto a new map, who also has the potential to cause up to 150 other players the loss of a significant event and rewards?
Or is it the players who are trying their best within the games limits to succeed in something that takes significant effort to organise?

People often don’t know the inner workings of a game engine, which leads to irate players trying to succeed against false game mechanics (ie: map limits) instead of succeeding against a genuine challenge in a dynamic event.

So you can ask (politely) a player to do something, but you can’t force them to. I think this is really why guilds ala TTS change maps so often for organised events. Not because you aren’t welcome, but because you aren’t cooperating for success.

I have been in the OP situation, particularly in guild events where I ask ‘Do you need help with X’.. or they ask ‘Please leave as you are scaling up the event’, to which I gladly do. The good community of Guild Wars often sends genuine thanks to anyone who contributes positively in any form.

Two nights ago I was mapping Sparkfly Fen with my Sylvari Ranger. I happened to be on the map when players were organizing for Tequatl. All I saw in map chat was general banter and people asking others to come and help. I never saw any rudeness whatsoever. There was also a guild group exploring the area and doing bounties. My Ranger stopped mapping to participate in Tequatl’s event. Tequatl was defeated, not once but twice, because a guild spawned him right after the regular event. It was a lot of fun.

Later in the evening, I returned to Sparkfly Fen as players were organizing for another Tequatl run. Again, no rudeness, no yelling, no cussing. So, my Ranger participated in three successful Tequatl events, got lots of boxes, and finished mapping the zone without ever experiencing any of the allegations cited in the OP. Just lucky, I guess.

Then he went to Bloodtide Coast just in time to load near where the Cobalt Wurm spawns. I got some Egg Scrambler achievement. That event was a disaster but no one was yelling or cussing. Again, I must have been lucky running into players having fun.

I have run into rude players before and they do taint your play. I either block them or try to get on another map if they’re really toxic.

I think it comes from the fact that the players are frustrated with the grind-like nature of having to farm drops from these bosses day in and day out, and want to do it as quickly as possible, so they get annoyed when the situation isn’t optimal.

Not right, but understandable considering how much repetitiveness is in the end game farming. Would drive anyone a little batty.

Ignore them, or don’t look at the chat window at all. Then they can’t hurt you.

I think you’ve definitely hit part of the reason. I find world bosses fairly boring; I mostly enjoy content that has some level of required person skill and small-team skill, and where both are actually noticeable. World bosses aren’t challenging in that respect. However, they are the absolute fastest and most reliable method of obtaining dragonite ore; sPvP is very slow comparatively, WvW is slow on average but also with wide variance depending on the current situation, and EotM is fairly reliable but still slow. WvW Keep/SM taking, and EotM still suffer from the same issues as world bosses for me, though. Due to the lack of other reasonable options for efficient dragonite ore obtainment, one is effectively forced to do world bosses if they value their time, and if you feel forced to do content that you probably wouldn’t otherwise be doing as much (or practically ever) just because you value your time, you’re probably going to want it over ASAP.

Another part of the issue is organizational. Anyone in your map instance and not participating is taking the spot of someone who could participate. Not only does this lead to a slower completion, meaning more time expended and less chance of hitting bosses that are close together on the timer (side note: does ANYONE like playing on a timer?), but it also increases the probability of failure of the event. People doing map completion aren’t just not participating, they’re hurting you, because they’re taking the spot of someone who could help you (or, you know, your buddy who really wants in the instance, but can’t get in because it’s full, even though say 20% of the whole map isn’t participating). This is a fundamental issue with the design of world bosses, amplified by megaserver change.

President -- ArenaNet

Next

I know some are concerned about whether ArenaNet is communicating with you and listening and responding to your feedback. As you saw with yesterday’s announcement, we do. All of us at ArenaNet play the game with you, chat with you and read your forum posts, and work on the things that we think will most delight and entertain you.

We’ve set a clear policy in the past year: we don’t talk speculatively about future development. We don’t want to string you along. Creating fun is an uncertain business: sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t; sometimes we go back to the drawing board over and over before we get something right. If we make optimistic promises and then can’t deliver on them, everyone suffers. So when we attend a trade show or give an interview, we’re there to talk about what we’re getting ready to ship, not to speculate on what we might ship someday.

Don’t read that as meaning that we don’t want to talk with you about the longer-term roadmap. The intention of the CDI threads is to talk with you about the roadmap. We want to talk design philosophy with you and hear how you want to see the game evolve. When those discussions trigger development, we’ll work internally until we have something we’re proud of before we’ll announce it.

A lot of the questions I’ve seen posted this week are as simple as this: does ArenaNet have an agenda to never do something? That’s almost never the case, and if it is the case you deserve to know and we’ll make sure we get more clear. In general the simple truth is this: when we’re not currently working on something, it’s because we’re working on something else instead that we think is more important for the game and community.

Our developers post on these forums on a voluntary basis, and in addition to developers, we have a community team who can clarify and be the bridge between players and developers. They’re ready to engage you on these topics. And I know it’s hard for the community team to engage players across all the forums and sites where these questions are being discussed, so I’m going to support the team in consolidating and focusing as necessary, so that we can be clear to the community where you can go to get a response.

See you in-game,

Now, I absolutely love GW2, and have come to respect Anet & their way of moving the game forward. At over 5k hours clocked in, I feel that GW2 is the best MMO on the market right now. That said, I speak as someone that is a co-GM of a guild totaling over 140+ members & routinely discusses these issues with my friends. Simply put, the Guildmag interview left me with the impression that Anet has failed in their understanding of what the community wants, & more importantly why. Here are the top issues that stuck out to me.

FoV & First Person View:

Now as I understand it, the reasoning for these two not being implemented has to do with a misinterpretation of the game’s art. Most of the people I’ve spoken to want both of these features because they appreciate the art & want to see more of it in a way that is comfortable for them. I have not heard a single person to date ask for a first person camera for combat, which was their reasoning for not adding it. Quite the opposite, every person I’ve spoken to wants it for screenshots.

The issue of FoV should be plain as day, but it’s not. Need we forget that the devs widened the initial FoV because it made people sick? The other reasoning behind not adding a FoV slider previously, is because it would give people an unfair advantage. But at the same time, 3 monitor setups that give an almost 180 degree FoV are perfectly fine. Siege meanwhile in WvW is not really affected because it requires a line of sight from the player standpoint.

Super Adventure Box:

I’ll just come right out & say it, selling an infinite continue coin for $10, then never having the concrete intention to let people to replay SAB is just plain wrong. One of the big topics that was brought up is the idea that Anet wants players to have less choices, & how that factors into bringing SAB back along with the above. Sorry, but I strongly disagree. If anything, the players want more. Even if it is a “game within a game”.

As for the issue of it “not fitting with the living story”, that is the biggest load of crock I’ve yet to hear from Anet, & I expect better. PvP doesn’t fit either, but it’s getting some overhauls. And it’s not like those covert charr backpacks sure fit well with the struggle against Mordremoth. Or perhaps they do, I’m undecided… So what would it hurt to leave it in the game as another option? As the first living world season proved, people want more to do at their own leisure, not less.

Do I really need to even speak about this? I think the community has it covered.

Precursor Crafting:

This is an issue that was brought up several months after the game’s release. We’re now nearing the 2-year mark. First it was delayed because it wasn’t done in time for the first feature pack, & now we’re back to “soon” with no timetable. Just like spring of last year. I can’t count the number of people I know that have either gone on hiatus or outright quit because the endgame of legendary weapons is nothing but a grind for gold to buy one weapon off the TP, or a gamble to flush all of your gold into the forge, possibly getting nothing to show for your efforts.

Mawdrey has shown that we can have items with a combination of time-gating, a bit of grind, and a cool story behind it to make the thing feel special. Entire expansions get released in the same time that precursors have gone nowhere.

Let me just close by saying that once again, I love this game. I enjoy the community and I respect a lot of the choices the devs have made thus far. But if wasn’t a co-GM & didn’t have so many friends here, I would have quit after reading that interview. Simply put, I don’t have faith in Anet’s ability to lead the game forward anymore.

Racial Sympathy Limitations are Nonsense

Had a post, it got wiped.

Anyway, sympathy is based off Race, not order. Asura generally dislike Skritt, so it doesn’t make sense for their sympathy missions to focus on Skritt possibly.

HOWEVER, we see SEVERAL Asura who effectively use Skritt as testsubjects/labrats throughout the world.

Fixed that for you. I have never seen them use skritt as helpers or assistants… they barely accept the other playable races as such (though we ofc. do know this does happen. Livia and Scarlet comes to mind). Skritt are never more than test subjects and lab rats for experiments..
Studied yes, accepted and respected as an equal race… nope. Studying something and finding intrest in it (which does happen for asura regarding skritt) is not the same as considering them worth allying with.

Ex. I find spiders ingredibly interesting and somewhat facinating. But I also hate them and find them disgusting and don’t want them anywhere near me. I will study a tarantula through the glass at the zoo, but I’d freak if the glass was not there. I think this relation (excluding the fear) is how asura consider skritt.

All the races have a minor race or 2 that they would not, could not affiliate with for whatever reasons. The reasoning for asura not siding with skritt is actually the one that makes the most sense to me… along with charr and norn not comprehending the unwillingness of the quaggan to fight.

I like that the races diffrenciate a little even after choosing orders. I love the different stories possible. Just pick up one of the races that can side with skritt… or play the skritt storyline with a friend and rp that you went out of your way to help 2 of the minor races.

Life doesn’t stop being funny just because the dead can’t laugh.

Has anyone considered...

The characters we play are hiking, jumping, and swimming most everywhere. We are fighting a lot, and even the casters can kinda get physical in their attacks. Realistically, they wouldn’t get fat living the standard adventurer life-style because they wouldn’t eat huge amounts, and would have enough physical activity to keep fit.

This. Even as recently as the 1860s, a slave would consume 4165 calories per day, a free person 3741 calories per day. That’s roughly to double the caloric intake a modern person living in a developed nation needs.

Go further back when there was less mechanization and industrialization, and everything was done by hand, and the caloric intake goes even higher. PBS ran a reality series called Frontier House some years ago. They took a bunch of people in modern people and had them simulate frontier living. Including farming, tending livestock, chopping wood, and harvesting. If I remember right, the men were eating 7000-9000 calories a day, and still losing so much weight that they called in doctors because they were so concerned. The doctors declared them to be healthy and very fit. (The women had it rough too – all the household chores which we now have machines do like washing clothes, cleaning dishes, etc. had to be done by hand.)

In Victorian times, being fat was considered attractive. It meant you were rich and had a decadent lifestyle. Everyone else was skinny as a reed.
