If they ran past you, fine you got something going.

But often I see players who do not play smart.

If you are 25% downed and you notice that a mob nearby is low health and currently being attacked by someone else, what is the smart thing to do?

Heal yourself?

NO!

You tag that mob so you can rally as soon as it’s dead.

If I see 4 normal mobs ganging up on a downed player, I 100% of the time will not rez you immediately. I can kill 4 normal mobs quicker than it takes to rez one player while taking hits. And I certainly expect players to realize this and tag the mob so that they will rally right away.

It’s been amazing. It’s sparked so much creativity in my guild and other friends, people that haven’t played in months have come back to experience the disaster and have written short stories about what happened to their characters. I just wrote three stories today about various alts.

One character in our guild died. She permakilled her character (who was a long time love interest for my main, so yeah, feels). Not out of dislike of the character but because the character was always an ordinary woman making her way in the world and disasters like this kill a lot of people.

On Enjin walls I’ve seen a lot of posts about character roll calls, what’s happened to them, whether they’re MIA, DIA, or obliviously off in other zones before the news spreads.

I have yet to learn my way around the war zone so it feels as disorienting to me as to my characters seeing their beloved tropical city turned into a flaming wasteland.

I agree with the title of this thread!

Sad to see all the negativity on the official forms, but I wanted to at least take a break from playing long enough to throw in a positive word here.

I have my criticisms and suggestions, and there have been bugs, but I do agree that it’s quite an incredible update.

It doesn’t have to be either/or.

There’s some annoying bugs, to be sure, but overall, I DO like this update. It feels suitably apocalyptic, and I love all the little ambient dialogue with all the NPCs from Lion’s Arch.

Whole bunch of stuff about being funneled, zerging, auto attacking and poor story telling

If you simply “funneled” into LA and didn’t wander through the refugee camps, couldn’t be bothered to listen to the NPC conversations that they were carrying on, or actively press the talk buttons with NPCs to get the story then you probably shouldn’t complain about the story telling here. It’s actually rich and varied, from the quaggans who have lost their homes and are reluctantly making plans to move further South, to the soldier who is vowing vengeance, from Marjory and Kasmeer discussing whether it’s worth it to go back in and fight again to the soldier who is glad to have the refugees so near vigil camp so that he can sleep in his own bed, to the little robot who wants to be a tank… The story is some of the best we’ve seen. Did you see Evon Gnashblade close the Asura gate on the citizens trying to escape LA?

Everyone complained about them putting short-stories on the website so they’ve put the stories back in game, and they are wonderful! Told in bits and pieces, but it’s there for anyone who wants to bother themselves to find it.

The achievements are also better than what we saw at the beginning of LS — it isn’t do this one thing 15 times, instead it’s do 15 different things one time. You can spend a cycle of Under Attack saving civilians, then the next defending way points or killing champions. Yes, to finish the meta you have to play Under Attack more than one time, but you can decide to experience it differently each time you play it, even choosing where you enter into the city and defending/counterattacking based on where you come in. My achievement tab is filling up just by playing the game.

The Zergs are not effective and are actually detrimental to success. Eight to twelve people can succeed where 50 will fail, simply because of the up-scaling. You can zerg or you can grab a couple of guild groups and have tons of fun and success both. If you’re going to blame A-Net for the zerg, then blame them for getting players in the habit of zerging early in the game’s history. Right now they are trying, pretty heavy handedly, to change that. It remains to be seen if they will be successful.

All in all this is a great update. The story rocks, the artwork is beautiful, and they’ve managed to involve me and many other players on an emotional level.

1. Funnel us all into one or two areas — Check Nobody is being funneled. The event occurs in LA. Choose to take part or don’t.

2. Create content that fosters zergs — Check (although to get the highest rewards you have to split up, but it is not required and I still see a lot of zerging). The major complaint about Scarlet’s Invasions were that nobody completed it intelligently after a while because higher rewards cam from farming champs rather than winning. Anet responds with an event designed to give higher rewards for winning. Good planning on their part

3. Create content that only requires auto attack and minimal brain activity — Check That’s your choice how to play. You can autoattack all you want. I’m going to help the whole zone win the event.

4. Inject the same monsters into the content — Check Well it makes sense doesn’kitten Scarlet creates a large and varied army of krait, clockwork, aetherblades, nightmare court, dredge, and Flame Legion. That’s 6 factions, each with numerous types of enemies. Of course she’s going to use the army she spent the past year building.

5. Do not give the player much direction as to where to go when he/she logs in for the first time — Check Read your mail, check the upper-right of your UI. Talk to other players…it is an MMO after all. It’s really not that hard.

6. Tell the story abysmally — Check. Truth be told, there’s not much story to tell. What, did you need pages of lore and revelations? This is the culmination of the story…a massive attack on Lion’s Arch. We get a cinematic showing the beginning of the attack and we take part in the evacuation. What else needs to be told?

Actually, I like it. On the surface it seems zergy, but that’s not the most efficient way to win the event The more citizens saved, the better the reward loot. And that requires not a single monster zerg, but rather a number of groups stationed at various locations and succeeding events. Give this patch more than a day and you’ll (hopefully) see fewer zergs and more organization.

Also, I love the back items!

After the patch, I and a friend got dropped off near the Lion in LA in the midst of this vast destruction of well-known places and started to fight our way towards the middle of the city. Such an epic, apocalyptic feel. Such a great patch. The cutscene was breathtaking. GJ (Use more of that synth that occurs in the last two seconds of the scene)

I really like this addition to the living story. I like the idea that we aren’t fighting for Lion’s Arch, we are just trying to cut losses. It gives a sense that Scarlet is much stronger than we thought she would be. She literally wrecked all of us.

As for the actual event, I like how the main event is rescuing citizens around the city, and there are various subevents i COULD attend if I wanted to. It rewards the MMO style of playing. You could travel in small groups, you could zerg, you can run solo and find citizens. You aren’t forced to do anything.

I know one group I played with started to split in to many smaller groups and spread throughout the city to look for citizens, then regrouped when an event occurred. ANet did this very well. Props to them. And the ruined LA looks amazing.

There is nothing fun about a zerg.

Then stop running in one. The event requires groups to be active across the map. If champs are spawning because of a zerg, then something is being neglected elsewhere. ANet structured this one well.

Feb 19 Patch was Perfectly Timed

There was a new build that came out today to fix a few things. I just wanted to comment that the new build was perfectly timed so that active LA raids were not interrupted, but we could all get back in for the next raid as well. I don’t doubt that this was by design.

Yesterday had to have been a long day at ANet HQ. The patch was delayed to ensure that things ran smoothly, and they mostly did. A few fixes are totally understandable, and I loved that ANet had the foresight to time it properly.

Thank you for all the hard work, ANet!

I like this update, I like zergy open world content (tho my favorite was the tower of nightmares).
However this is what disappointed me from this patch: I still know nothing about what Scarlet saw and what she is looking to do.
There is only 1 more update on this “season” (?), and I am really worried that Scarlet is not going to be vaporized, desintegrated or something like that

All the 5-15 years old love it. All the 20 and above are sick of zerg’ing. But at the end, you need to shove the LS stuff to sell gems store items. What can you do…

Im 31 and I love running with the pack. Thats why I play games like this for the community. If I wanted more time with a story I would just play single player games.

Not at all. I for one wanted to see a world shaking event whereas scarlet’s actions actually did something of note. I would say having LA turned into ground zero of an air raid suffices.

The events may be zerg fests, however I prefer to think of them as a strength in numbers strategy myself. There are a few bugs too, but I for one am very happy with this update as we can at least feel threatened this time around knowing nothing is sacred.

The main reason I am not disappointed though is to be honest, even with as big and drastic and awsome an event that this is, I believe this is really still just the tip of the ice burg. There is still so much for us to know and see. No military story especially during a siege has much dialog, this shouldnt be any different, the fighting and the chaos is the part of the story that is important right now. Also no game has ever put each of their years in play in the term of a season. The only thing we have to base a season off of in comparison is a TV show. In the shows the last few episodes are always intense, but usually still compare to nothing as the way a finale leaves it. At least in any decent action type show, take SOA for example. That shows has rarely ended its season off on a good note. It is always the beginning of the next that hope actually starts to come back. That to me would be a great format for a game story to follow. But mark my words, we have still yet to see the actual big world changing finale.

my original point was there’s so many people you can just auto attack and win. then you said i’m doing something wrong by just following the zerg and auto attacking. and now you’re saying i should just follow the zerg and auto attack! i’m so confused!

i never said i wanted to play by myself. i love playing with other people, just not when everything is mindless and staff guardians.

I believe the response from another poster was dont be a sheep. There is nothing wrong with running with the zerg, really thats what the game is – IMO thats what a MMO with a strong community should be, playing and changing the world together as a team, a zerg only fills the role of massive in the genre MMO. The problem I said was that if all u do is auto attack its your own fault. Wait to lay down some fields for when the main group spawns, and go on with the objectives of the event. I have no problem getting tons of drops doing that. Let the sheep clean up the mess while the ones that actually want to play complete the goals.

Sorry I misunderstood your origonal point, and I agree the over use of staff gaurdians and auto attack spammers is too much and can ruin the fun. Unfortunately the majority of people are selfish and only want their achievments and dont want to actually have to do anything to get them so all they do is dodge and auto attack.

which leads me to believe that it is not the game that is disappointing, it is like in real life it is the community that is disappointing.
