Hey a-net, I think it is awesome you have designed a weapon for aging people with poor eye and is sight suitable for those who have response times of 15ms. But for us younger at heart people I think it is kinda obvious hammer is slow. Really-really slow. Terribly slow. Painfully slow. Can’t even effectively deal with a thief who chooses to use stealth more than once slow. Agonizing slow to stay on top of a warrior slow. Eye gouging slow to stay on top of necro that isn’t using their 25% movement increase signet that is also 3/4 dead, crippled, chilled and immobilized slow. I started using my hammer guardian in a map when you initially thought of skyhammer..so far i am almost about to center kinda slow.
In PvP where the point of focus changes fast, having a 2 second symbol that gives 3 seconds of protection isn’t all it is cracked up to be. I know you guys kinda that it is really good skill and so totally awesome that a 2 second symbol that damages about as much as fresh air does and that gives me protection for 2 auto attacks justifiably deserves some sorta obvious counter play. Really slow obvious counter play. Highly skilled, obvious counter play that involves just stepping to the side a little bit to avoid..even when your chilled and making coffee you still having a significantly large window to avoid.
People flock to warrior because, if you haven’t noticed..guardian is really slow..painfully slow. Horrendously slow..glacier slow..Many guardians would be happy if the damage stayed the same on hammer, even if you reduce some of the symbols by a second and shaved 0.5 seconds off the secondary prot’s some of the skills create for the sake that their weapon skill are hasten by 0.25-0.5 seconds.
Your reducing crit dmg to make other professions seem more in line damage..how bout actually making the only other heavy profession that can play melee not look like a slow moving avalanche. Yes-yes I know the counter argument about all of their terribly slow really defensive skills…but my argument is play hammer/staff for a month every day. I will take a newb to thief sword/dagger and let them play for a month..then you 2 duel for a 2 hours and tell me that was fun…it is was, it was probably really slow fun. Painfully slow fun…
You have your mindsets, but this is 2014. A lot of your new edition players have been through unreal tournament, counter strike, dark souls, street fighter..we’re kinda use to modern games moving at a certain speed. Hammer guardian feels like i am playing ice wind dale and waiting for my turn again. It is just too overly dramatically slow in small engagements and especially in 1 vs 1 situations. It seriously needs love.

We’ll be talking about upcoming WvW stuff starting next week. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what we’ll be talking about quite yet, but I figured at the very least I’d give you folks a timeline to go off of.

Biggest tip for new players I could possibly give : never buy anything RNG from the gem store, you will be disappointed.
The same thread that appears every time an RNG dye kit is released. If people buy them, they’ll keep pumping them out, if people stop, they’ll change the way they work.
Lesson learned – just buy the dyes from the TP.

I just spent 10 euro to buy 6 metallurgic dyes kits to have….nothing.
Got 6 dyes 3 blues 2 green and 1 rare (a crap one) for a total value of 1g (i even already had all of them on my main).
I’m wondering why did i fall again into this shop trap, all my fault i know.
I feel totally cheated, it’s like i gave 10 euros for nothing. They are milking and i’m a good cow.
So sad
tl;dr Anet didn’t balance for active defense, and everyone who whines about other players being at fault is wrong and just making the problem worse. The zerk issue hurts everyone. Read the kitten post to know why.

Anet didn t balance for PASSIVE defense.
Active defense works too well….see endure pain, Aegis, reflect etc etc etc.
You can go zerk without giving up active defense that is the one keeping you alive, while passive is useless and just reduce dps prolonging battles with no advantage.
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
TL;DR.
Read the godkitten thing. He put a lot of effort into it and it was a very good read. Stop being lazy.

The thing that is stupid about it is if I come across a Bronze Recruit he will be significantly more experienced than someone with the Veteran rank.
the naming convention is completely wrong.
And if they want to keep it this way then they should do something to emphasis the colour i.e (bronze, silver, gold, etc) Two ways would be a frame around the target showing the colour, or a badge similar to the 100% map completion.
I still think they should think up something better.
you are right. invaider, bronz invaider, silver inv, gold inv, assaulter, bronz kitten, silv kitten etc… makes more sens. i think they made this for the common folks. if they see a bronz they know that guy is experienced as a non bronz but less experienced as a silver.

There’s a thread in the thief forums teaching people how to one shot enemies with their thief. Three shotting seems trivial.
As always, the only people who think thieves are balanced are the people who play them -including the devs-. It’s like Kim Jong-il being the only one thinking North Korea is a-ok.
As always, the only people who think thieves are op are the people who can’t be bothered to learn how to fight them.

Actually two days ago, got one shotted. 20k, one hit. Fought him several times, switched out armor, changed up skills. One hit, 20k each time. And he wasn’t even backstabbing. He was rushing, shadowstep, hit….and your down on the ground.
In one instance, it was two thieves doing the same thing, but instead of going down, I was first down, and then dead without a coup-de-grace. Which means, 1 thief knocked me down with 1 hit, and the 2nd did the same amount of damage in my prone form.
So 1 thief, for 1 hit, no backstabbing and I’m down, and if a 2nd enemy thief is present it’s automatic death.

Too much of the game is based on the trading post. It focuses the game around gold acquisition vs adventuring. Imo it is the worst aspect of the game.

Also, @OP: I think you severely underestimate the amount of gold some people have.
That is not a problem with the profession but with the system as a whole – trying to play with real-time action mechanics on an architecture that is inherently laggy.
the problem is that you assume zero lag. Thieves benefit from lag more than any other class. I’ve seen enemies unresponsive to my burst thief simply because all 4 hits land at once from their perspective. they tell me later that it looks as though they got hit for 20k all at once. you cannot respond to that. sorry.
Dodging and strafing won’t bring a hammer train down. Because they can stack, move constantly, heal while moving, run with near full time stability, dish out constant control, tons of AoE DPS, lots of CC and soak up tons of damage they are near impossible to bring down without a substantially superior force.
Adding to this is that inexperienced and low skill players can be highly effective in these as long as the remain stacked. Even when they start to fall banners tend to bring them back up. I have seen the Agg guild come back from almost a complete wipe.
How to solve the problem… that would mean rebalancing heavies almost entirely.

I think Guardians should have Axe weapon skills, It bothers me that its the only melee weapon they cannot wield. I get that they’re a mix between Caster and Melee, but Necro uses Axe as a Caster, and if that doesnt stop them why should it for Guardian? I would pref if it were a melee rather than caster weapon for guardian though, perhaps sword should be more of a caster weapon for them.
I’m not trying to whine here, I just wanna throw this idea out there.
I’m on a low tier server so I can only speak to my experience. Only a very small percentage of people upgrade. There’s very few upgrades to do and so only a few people pay for it. On my server there are some heroes who watch over the keeps and stuff and pay for upgrades. Usually commanders. If 99% of WvW players don’t start an upgrade durin the week, I wouldn’t be surprised.
As a result, upgrades as a gold sink is a weird gold sink:
-falls on a small subset of WvW players
-as a result only removes a small amount of gold supply from that small percentage of players (I imagine upgrade costs per week per server are a very small percentage of even the gold earned in WvW)
-which means it somehow punishes what should be a lauded gamestyle
-and ultimately, is never a factor in whether an upgrade gets started or not (it’s all a matter of supply)
If we got rid of it, I just think it would improve life. It’s not going to make anyone rich but would be one monkey off our backs.
Yes, as a thief, I find three shotting very easy to do in this game.
