This game has the single best multiplayer component of any game I have ever played. My analysis is based on general PvP principles which apply to MMO’s and FPS games etc. so it’s not specifics I’m getting into but rather general ideas.

1 – Downed mode. An amazing tactical addition to pvp that enhances team play and leads to some of the most exciting and game-turning crutch plays I have ever experienced. When someone is downed, do I revive, go for the stomp, cleave? Do I have a utility/skill that can secure a downstate play? The split second decisions made during some downstate plays are some of the most memorable and heart-pounding moments in my gaming life.

2 – If I had a dollar for every stun ability and counter in this game… The tactical depth of how stuns/disables and counters work in GW2 is ingenious. Whether its saving your invun for a Mesmer disable into shatter combo or setting up team burst through baiting cds so you can apply the hard disable/stun/immobilize, GW2 keeps you on your toes.

3 – Mesmers/Rogues – Some builds for these classes are the hardest to master in PvP, but incredibly satisfying when you get the hang of them. They are classic high risk/high reward classes- generally one mistake will get you killed or forced to retreat at best, but they have the potential for excellent burst and utility. Some thief builds in particular have an amazing tool kit and an extremely “hands on” playstyle, that for me personally is the most fun way to play even though you are always living on a razors edge.

4 – It is just awesome. In general when I play a PvP game, MMO or FPS, I like there to be a skill component to the game. There is a vast skill element in GW2. MMO’s in general are all about getting into groups and stacking on some poor individual. In GW2, this is hardly an issue unless you rotate poorly. Even if some extremely skilled person manages to kill one of the up to 5 people ganging up on him, it is extremely difficult to beat a group – although most extremely skilled individuals would not put themselves into a 5vs1 fight.

In addition, the combat system is amazing. Not only are there a variety of gap closers and openers, there are also “little things” like players hobbling when crippled, saying “I’m burning” when on fire, the largely clear skill animations that get you watching – and listening – for tells instead of looking at cast bars. With a few strange exceptions –like asura – the game appears to have been built ground up to facilitate deep and exciting pvp combat.

These features make the PvP feel incredibly fulfilling and robust, as I’m being constantly forced to make decisions that can make or break a play. Or when I pull off a truly skilful play (admittedly rarely), I have a little grin on my face knowing that the other player, if they are worth the salt, is probably thinking how they could have thwarted me.

It’s truly amazing, and I often think the devs that made this must be so proud.

You may be expected to play meta if you’re joining a tPVP team, but if you’re not, don’t worry about it.

I envy the ones who still have fun, really do. GG.

Why? There’s nothing wrong with you not having fun. It’s not really a big deal.

There is when GW2 tries to be jack of all trades but master of none.

No, there’s not. If the guy isn’t having fun then he’s not having fun. Its not compulsory. Plenty of people still are, plenty of people aren’t, plenty of people in degrees in between. It’s not really a big deal, its just a “thing”.

Sorry I edited my post, would have told you sooner but Daddy (Anet) changed how often I’m allowed to post.

Nerf Fire Fields, here's why-

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Black Box.9312

Black Box.9312

Power creep is bad. If one single field out of every single one is obviously far stronger than all the rest, it should be nerfed. The game has had enough power creep already.

Power creep is the gradual unbalancing of a game due to successive releases of new content.

Fire Fields, the same since 2012.

Power creep is actually when balancing is centered exclusively on the strongest abilities. When everything else is constantly buffed to match the current strongest, it eventually becomes a game of number inflation.

So yes, buffing everything around fire fields would most certainly contribute toward power creep.

You can literally copy paste something from a wiki and not please some people with your definition sometimes. (Which is what just happened.)

This.

To get 100% duration, the player gives up a lot especially for boon duration. The only arguable point is (WvW wise) that +% condi duration food gives a lot more than other +% condi duration items, making higher (not 100%) condi duration achievable with little investment. You can get +50% condi duration just with consumables.

. These skills should only be doing damage while the player is in the animation. The way they currently act is totally different from the rest of the game.

I know right? You don’t see necro’s dropping wells that pulse for 5-6 seconds, guardians dropping symbols, warriors dropping a huge fire field, etc.

I mean clearly no other professions can drop fields that do damage and use other skills at the same time. If they could they might be able to perform combos in their own fields! How broken would that be?!

Please anyone, is there a class and build in this game that is pretty much good or excels in all situations? Please tell me as I’m lazy and I do not want to change my class or build at all.

Find me that class/build, I’ll play it and we’ll call it OP.

Just pointing out a few things:

1.) There is no such thing as “perma” anything for the thief. If a thief was “perma-resetting” they would be immortal which is just exaggerating a falacy..

Thieves can reset at will as often as they want. To proof it you just need to watch a twitch or youtube video from any decent thief. I mean theirs even a good example on the thief forum right now, the video of that engi that duels P/D thieves. In every single video the thief constantly reseted the fight and only died because he overextended or did a stupid mistake. Its known throughout the community that a thief can reset as often as he wants if he knows what he does.

What is balance team doing with their time?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

Balancing consists of the following steps:

1. Collect Data.
2. Review Data to see if Balancing is required.
3. If required, propose solutions.
4. Determine if solutions meet your goals, are realistic, and do not significantly impact other areas of the game.
5. Select a solution.
6. Develop the solution.
7. Test the solution.
8. Revise the solution if anything comes up during testing.
9. Test again if revisions are made.
10. Repeat 8-9 as needed.
11. Release Balancing changes.

Start over at step 1.

They can skip steps 1 and 2 in some cases by playing the game and seeing what creates unhealthy play patterns ie. player can’t react because there is no way to avoid something/they don’t have enough information. This goes for most cases, they are (hopefully) professionals at this. Another thing is listening to feedback and looking graphs if they got them, sure

Step 3 only occurs if there is something detected so it’s fairly obvious
Step 4 is the reason why PvE and PvP should be balanced differently. There is absolutely no need to lift your hands up in the air and say you can’t do something because it would affect another aspect of the game if those aspects are easily separated
I doubt the existence of 6-10 even existing in most cases. A lot of the changes aren’t too well thought out and we don’t have a public beta testing going on where they could even gather the data required for revisioning the changes. Most of the changes are numerical anyway and not new mechanics so the ‘development’ doesn’t actually take time

It sure as hell doesn’t take 6 months to figure out 5% tweaks to skill damages. I do appreciate the big changes WHEN we get them but as for balance updates, they don’t really help the balance much at all. The patches are too infrequent and the balance will be skewed in some other direction in just a few weeks at best, causing the game to be pretty much dead and stagnated when it comes to innovation for more than 90% of the time

And this is why you are not in charge of balancing any type of content for any game.

Step 1 is the single most important step in the chain. Without it you are literally just making dumb guesses. You may as well spin the “wheel-o-nerf” to make all of your decisions.

The devs care about every single profession, thinking otherwise is absolutely silly. ANet wants the best for this game, and that includes the best balance for every profession, this is not just their job, its what they live and breath all day every day. You can disagree with the changes they make, because they aren’t always right, but saying they specifically dislike certain professions, professions THEY made is just dumb.

Can you nerf conditions already?

in PvP

Posted by: zone.1073

zone.1073

To be honest, I don’t see that many condi builds in sPvP. No more than power builds. Yes they are annoying but most conditions are AoE, don’t stand in the red circles. Conditions from auto attacks don’t do much damage, save your cleanses for the big burst.

^ This.

There is no longer a condition meta, where everybody and their mother plays condition builds. In fact, condition builds are falling out of flavor, while power builds are the new trend due to a rising bunker meta.

One could argue that conditions defeat bunkers due to their defense-bypassing properties, but this is not true. Bunkers tend to have supremely good condition removal to aid their survivability, so a competent bunker will not die from conditions alone. Power builds are the best way to kill bunkers, and that’s why power builds are so popular in this bunker meta.

In a 1v1 or 1v2 duel, conditions are powerful (as they should be), but in a proper team fight, conditions fizzle out of usefulness because bunkers are cleansing conditions from themselves and their teammates while bursting people down with power damage. Conditions are fine the way they are now.

Disagree people complain about mobility because they think they should have the opportunity to kill everything they see, people complain about immunity because well it’s immunity, and survivability is apart of immunity and mobility.

Your suggesting that other classes need nerfs instead of looking at specific builds(not saying I agree anything needs nerfed based on your assumption.) You mention diamond skin elementalist as a reason elementalist needs nerf who even runs that outside of some niche roaming builds?

The bases for your claim that every other class needs nerfs is kind of weak tbh. Just because people complain or not doesn’t really mean there is a problem in the first place.

Hello,

1.) The tower walls are too low and a single elementalist can burn your siege down.
Jump out and kill him. It is called defense not invulnerability. Also siege placement is key.
2.) You need to have people sit around and do nothing while waiting for an attack.
People can patrol and rotate positions so that they are not the only ones at an objective.
3.) A multi-siege attack will blast through walls and doors before people can move to defend.
Yes if you are out of position and not prepared to repell the multiple siege attack. This happens even faster if you haven’t worked to upgrade your locations.
4.) Its actually easier to shoot the guy on the wall than it is for him to shoot the guy on the ground.
True
5.) Mesmers porting people in.
Sweep, stealth traps, know your terrain and positions for hidden mesmers.

6.) Once the fortifications are built your supply sits there waiting to be grabbed by the next zerg. (Thanks for working so hard to give us supply!)

Expend the supply on siege during the fight, repairs during the fight. Ensure you run a built that is robust enough to endure multiple pushes and the AOE that is poured on the wall / door
7.) When you play defense and defense only the other maps come to you. (They are not colluding and attacking you…they are bored of not seeing anyone on their map.)
True to a point
8.) Siege decays rapidly.
It decays slower now and there is a tool to manage the refreshing of siege if you are conscientious enough to use it.

9.) Defense siege costs a bunch …each wall..the door…the upgrades…all to be lost in a 5 minute attack.
The cost buys you time to kill the opponents momentum.

10.) You need to deal with getting in your own keep before you can start to defend. ?? If it is yours then why are you “ dealing with getting in” or are you saying after you lose it and you have to recover it.

11.) Bad money after good syndrome…you just dumped several gold into a garrison and you’ll be kitten ed if they can have it!…even if it means losing your entire map! So there!
Yes there is a reason to work from top to bottom on a borderland it is called distance to spawn. With EB same thing except you have to be able to bypass spawn campers to start some momentum.

12.) When they take your towers/keeps/castle how often do they stick around? Usually they don’t…if they do just ignore them for 10 minutes and they leave…now its easy to take back…and you have the spawn point close.

This works unless they have nothing else to do. It also means you don’t have your own objectives.

Defense is effective if you have the numbers expertise and attitude to do it. It isn’t as simple as PVD. It isn’t as fast or shiny or rewarding. The victory in defense comes from having been challenged, tested and overcoming a determined opponent. In the end they must be killed. Repairing walls, using supply traps, using siege to push them off of the attack just forces a opponent to fall back to trebuchets and at that point it is a open field battle unless you have the ability to counter treb. Anticipating enemy siege placement and eliminating it before they do substantial damage to your position is fun. Making all of their efforts vain and watching them run away because they have to get larger numbers to succeed is fun. Taking a fully fortified objective because the opponent isn’t able to pull off a successful defense is fun. It goes both ways and the more challenging the objective is because of the better defense the more fun everyone has.

[WvW] Condition Duration Food is OP

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Aberrant.6749

Aberrant.6749

Yes, you could bring -40% condi duration food to counter-act +40% condi duration food. You could also bring -1000% condi duration food to counteract +1000% condi duration food. That doesn’t mean it’s fine.

Aaaannnndddd we’ve fallen into using hyperbole to back up a rubbish argument.

heres my take on it:

there are 3 situations that commonly occur in my roaming experiences when i run into an enemy condi build (ignoring player skill for the most part).

  • he has pizza, i have nothing. i die.
  • he has nothing, i have lemongrass. he dies.
  • we both have opposite foods. pretty good fight most of the time.

thats how i know these foods are OP, cuz the food dictates the winner of the fights.

That just tells me that you’re not running enough anti-cond and are using the -40% food to help make up for that. That’s fine, but don’t blame the +40% food for conditions being the problem. If you fight anyone that doesn’t have food and you do, you’ll have a large advantage regardless of the builds involved.

Overall the +40% food makes such little difference in anything that matters.

Large scale fights =’s power or get out.

Small scale is more split, but still more power based by and large. Taking more time for your dot’s to tick gives your opponent more chance to get help from friends/run to guards/etc.

Even with the +40% foods, condition builds are still solidly in the minority in WvW. If conds with +40% were so OP, this wouldn’t be the case.

People need to quit blaming this food for their own decisions to not bringing enough anti-condition stuffs. Seriously, just carry the -40% food on you and pop it if it’s a condition user, the rest of the time use your + power ~2 second kill gank food (or whatever).
