They are more of a support class than anything, which is why they do such good solo damage. Self-support. Which is different from having a high base DPS.
Huh?…
agree with sick’ em BUT not GUARD !!!!
guard with range pets = turrets ! ensuring my pet won’t DIE in boss fight where i place them at a safe spot and ALLOW my pet to shoot at them
I’d gladly shell out 40-50 for a whole new continent to explore
But I’d really kill for new skills and weapons.Quoted for emphasis.
I spend more then that a month in the gem shop… What is your point?
That crap like that is whats wrong with MMOs nowadays.
Who needs content when you can make more money scamming people with RNG?
For those who don’t know, yesterday, I released a survey allowing users to vote for what they thought was the worst classes within the various aspects of the game (PvE, WvW, sPvP, etc.). Following my earlier thread on the matter, I promised to release the numbers after accruing what I felt was a reasonable number of votes. Now that I have 1500 votes, and the distributions are no longer changing substantially, I believe that time has come.
If you haven’t already taken the survey, here it is: http://kwiksurveys.com/s.asp?sid=b6hqtkxynle08vr178091
If you don’t care for graph’s, I’ve got a written analysis too.
Results:
So, here are the results of almost 1500 votes: http://kwiksurveys.com/tmp_pdf/report-ED95F5FCB9654F3BA3F637D7E89D011E.pdf
After 1800 votes: http://kwiksurveys.com/tmp_pdf/report-CCC1A276386A48288ED187E683949FEE.pdf
Written Analysis:
What is the worst class in open world PvE (exploration, events, etc.)?
The community was fairly split here. The largest category was that They are all
fairly balanced with ~19% of the votes. However, there were clear choices after that, with the first being Thief (15% of the vote) and Ranger (14% of the vote). Shortly following that were the Mesmer and Engineer (sharing ~11% of the vote). The rest of the classes had substantially fewer votes.
What is the worst class in instanced content (dungeons, fractals, etc)?
Far and away, the community selected the Ranger as the worst class in dungeons and other instanced content (~45% of the votes) with the Thief as a distant second (15% of the votes). I think this might have to do with the class’s rather low DPS compared to others.
What is the worst class in large scale WvW combat (Zerg vs. Zerg)?
Again, we have the Ranger leading with ~28% of the vote, and the Thief is second with ~22% of the vote. This is starting to look like a pattern.
What is the worst class in small scale WvW combat (small skirmishes and battles without commanders)?
Now we get some substantially different results. While the Ranger is still leading with ~24% of the vote, the Warrior has surged to second place with ~20% of the vote.
What is the worst class in arranged PvP environments (tournaments, other sPvP)?
Now we have come full circle. What is considered one of the strongest classes in PvE, is now considered one of the weakest classes in sPvP – the Warrior – leading with 38% of the vote. The Ranger is a distant second with ~14% of the vote.
So, there it is. According to the law of large numbers, I don’t think the results will change substantially.
I think one of the really important points to take away from this is that balance across the different elements of the game is very different and needs to be treated separately. The Ranger is widely percieved as one of the weakest classes in PvE and WvW, yet due to a very powerful build it had in sPvP, it was nerfed substantially – widening this balance gap. I think these results show that the ArenaNet team needs to put a bigger effort into ensuring that each of its game formats is balanced rather than trying to balance with a “one size fits all” mentality.

The problem Colin is these projects have felt fleeting and temporary and simply not anything to get hyped about.
I’d gladly shell out 40-50 for a whole new continent to explore, and I’m also patient for it as well. But hearing that there may be none of that worries me.
But focusing on improving the core GW2 experience is something I can get behind.
But I’d really kill for new skills and weapons.
“But what about making money? Guild Wars 1 survived on paid expansions, editions, add-ons, whatever you want to call them – are we to believe that the boxed sales of Guild Wars 2 and micro-transactions are enough to sustain such a large operation?
“Yes,” responded Zadorojny. “It absolutely is enough.”
And you guys wonder why they keep making RNG boxes? It sells. I say continue on with that trend.

We do? First I heard of this. Link? Any pictures?
3) Rangers have a pet, which also contributes DPS. I see no indication of pet damage measurements in this post, but a pet typically contributes between 1-2k DPS. In terms of total damage, a totally decked out ranger (might, fury, vulnerability, banners, consumable, Spotter, Empower Allies) hits for over 10k DPS once you include the pet’s damage. That is almost identical to the guardian’s DPS and higher than the warrior’s DPS, which is about 9.6k.
It’s in the second picture. Here is an unofficial test though for you. Snowballs must be OP.
Robert Hrouda plays a ranger and designs the dungeons so he is familiar with the meta and acutely aware of the ranger’s issues with it. Despite this rangers still see the vast majority of issues they’ve seen since launch. The funny thing is, even if pets were buffed so that two could tank a boss (the stated reason why they refuse to fix pet survivability issues), the meta wouldn’t change because survival isn’t an issue in dungeons, it’s just a DPS race.
I watched Robert Hrouda live stream his adventure in Southsun cove after the last Living Story patch and watched him click his utility skills with his mouse. I don’t think there is much he is aware of, keybinds being one of them. It’s not possible for me to have hope about Rangers being balanced one day, dungeons being reworked, or anything else like that. I guess this reply is slightly off-topic, but whatever. Rangers are simply inferior, and I really doubt that anything will be done about that at this point. Like you essentially said, a lot of other classes offer the same things in a superior form, and this really just cripples Rangers.

So since you have 2 eles and 3 rangers, the rangers have to take turns getting real weapons?

more food for thought: how does the dps of a downed warrior compare to rangers?
Obal was doing 1800 with Throw Rock in downed state. That’s comparable DPS to Shortbow autoattack.
Rocks do more damage than arrows?
I knew my slingshot would come in handy at some point.according to the tool tips it shouldn’t but it’s close because of throw rock activation time.(?) dps test anyone? lol

That is your best bet for finding groups to any dungeon.
Also, at level 30 (even though story mode of AC is level 30)… you will WIPE like crazy.
I really recommend saving dungeon runs until level 80 or at a very minimum 20 levels above the requirement for the dungeon (or it will last FOREVER)
I’m fairly certain you’re in the minority. There’s few redeeming qualities and no need to snare. All you need in dungeons are reflection, group stability, and DPS and the ranger can only do one of those things (reflection). Interesting how guardian does all three. Jon P wasn’t lying when he said guardian would be the cleric profession to end all clerics. Your best bet in any gamemode is always guardian. :p
Why so down on Rangers, Chopps? Where did this ranger-loving fellow from 4 days ago go?
On the last boss fight, if you are doing a speed run, you have to alternate what you attack: Mai or her add. Doing this in the right order (google it) prevents a HUGE aoe from spamming the arena. Speed runs in this dungeon will want to aboid the time consuming aoe but also must be good enough to focus down targets with the right amount of power. You can’t just feedback land aegis while dropping 100b like they do on the kitten Lupicus video.
Now you DON’T have to play this way. If you run it like a pick up group you will just accept that you will be dodging aoe. There’s a chance to lose a pet. Swiftness, careful dodges, well timed swaps, and signet of stone are important.
Rangers must be strong. ANET is challenging us, not hating us. They love us. So they make it hard, forcing us to improve. It’s NOT an unfair fight to rangers.
I hope that helps.
Reality sucks but I’m glad you’re here :o

Hey Anet?!, do it , DO IT!!!! ad that in fractal, you all know its good.
Srsly if you dont want a challenge at all…. why you dont just read a book, take a walk outside, or just watch TV?
This thing is no Hardmode so just learn it -.-Hey
Reading a book or taking a walk can ALSO be a challenge, depending on circumstances
Chopps, I actually enjoy having a ranger in grp especially for boss fight. Pet rezz, nature spirit, bear pet… all nice things to have if used correctly. Stun, snare, also nice.

Yeah, as I was saying to some friends: “If even the game does not know what killed me, how am I as a player to know?”
And 40k damage must be the new record. That is ludicrous. Raine makes a good point. You should be able to learn from your mistakes, but this is something that is lacking in a lot of GW2’s content. There are a lot of random deaths and badly telegraphed attacks, along with sometimes insanely scaled damage numbers. Maybe they should just give all monsters a hard damage cap, so that no monster can ever kill a player in one hit who is at full health.

Best build for a Ranger in the front lines is…
Roll a Guardian
DB Night Crew
that is never going to happen, the ranger will forever be stuck to using only certain builds forever in this game….
i played the ranger in guild wars 1 and i hate the ranger in guild wars 2 compared.
Ranger in gw1 was ‘rupt’ or ‘gtfo’. I had fun with a thumper build I made there but yeah… gw2 ranger alot more fun, i think…
However, I would like to see PvP and PvE using their own set of skills just like gw1 did.
Hey, don’t let this thread die. I’m holding onto the vague hope a few Anet devs have ranger primary. Btw, while the melee ranger does work, you need to face that a dodgy ranger is like a thief wanna be. I am using it now, but I gotta say that I could be using my thief doing the same thing more effectively. Rangers were meant to be an adaptive class, but to take the range from the ranger and then argue that it wasn’t supposed to be it’s primary role seems a little dumb. I don’t want my to keep rolling with the punches I want to hit back and get a class that has more than a very few specific builds that only work in specific circumstances. I want ANet to let the ranger succeed like the other classes can.
Also, I don’t play my main (a ranger) in WvW anymore. I play my warrior and I gank rangers easy kills.
Thanks for completely destroying ranger as a class. Only class I wanted to play in the game, and now due to the severe imbalance in spvp from thief Mesmer and Necro sporting a new condition that my supposed condition removal is supposed to address, gets activated and 60% of the time it does nothing but go on cooldown.
I’ve spent over 400$ on this game since launch( In store, extra copies of the game for friends, buying gems to convert into currency, etc). Arenanet will never see anymore money from me.
There are aspects of ranger class that are JUST as broken as they were last year when the game launched. It is severely disheartening to see a company that CLAIMS even balance and supposedly cares about their balance and classes in pvp/wvw/pve and then releases a build like this that completely destroys a class, You nefred BM( pet damage) which is nerfed across all builds, and yet you didn’t buff our direct damage? Like you said you were going to ?
The fact that there is a STICKY in this forum for broken ranger abilities etc by one fan, illustrating and proving it for 9 months and yet issues on the list are STILL broken ?
I heard from a friend that gw1 ranger is still broken. I wonder if this will be the case for this game….
I worked toward pvp rank as an avid pvper when I could; That being said, Look up Faithless Ryuuken on the pvp rank listing. I’m no scrub, and I am no noob. I’ve tested 7 weapon sets, and probably over 10 builds since the patch. When I can’t 1v1 the classes that got buffed in conjunction with the supposed ranger (broken)balance update… The state of my game is in jeopardy.
Which in turn says the state of YOUR game is in jeopardy. Ask yourself what you want from your players, if its longevity with this game, Fix the balance issues. Stop buffing OP classes, and rebalance the giant steaming pile of kitten you just took on my rangers’ chest. Please and thanks.
PS. I’m not playing your broken unbalanced game until you do something about it. I’ve seen tons of my friends who said the same thing. Balancing in Games, especially online ones, is very crucial. Even more so when the company is CLAIMING to have balanced it…. when clearly, either no internal testing was done, or you just don’t actually care that when the next game comes out, like Wildstar, Arch Age, or even FFXIV ARR, you’re going to loose people to this garbage you call even balance, when clearly it is not even balance. I’m not going to play your flavor of the month bs.
What’s worse, is one of my friends and circles said they play favorites in terms of the classes, this was month 3 of the game launch… and NOW I believe them… Necro and Mesmer were already Strong PVP classes….
Stealth is a completely broken game mechanic, and subsequently THF is kittened op in the hands of a decent pvper. To prove this, I took THF without a stealth build, naked, with very minimal traits etc for pvp with pistols, and I topped the charts with it.
I then took another look with dual daggers, and short bow, incorporating stealth, the first build I tried I fully traited, and went in naked otherwise, and I scored over 100 points more than the top person on each team. There was no person below rank 18 in this match. All tests were done in Spvp Hot joins. No team stacking, just solo play, as it is with the occasional zerg that is unavoidable in spvp.
This is not balanced at all.
I hope the Devs take the time to read this and a patch follows soon, because as previously stated I for one will not play this game as is. I’m 100% sure I have more than 1/4 of the serious ranger community behind me. ( this does not include the 30 rangers on my friend list or the guildies that have all stopped playing the game all together or are boycotting ranger.
pps. I didn’t even go into detail of all the problems I have experienced on this class since launch. The list is over 3 pages long.
I see many wanting the removal of the pet. The ranger has, since reveal, been centered around the pet. That is a cornerstone of the ranger.
Is it that you want the pet removed or that you want the issues with the pet to be fixed so it doesn’t feel like a weight when it’s not behaving properly?
Main: Caeimhe – Sylvari Ranger
Alts: Charr Guardian, Asura Elementalist, Human Thief, Norn Necromancer
If you remember ranger shouts in GW1, they were godly pet buffs. My GW1 beastmaster build made my pet more tanky than a full on tank. It was nearly impossible to kill them.
Unfortunately most of the GW2 shouts just add what should be default pet functionality. The ability to tell it to move somewhere (“Guard”). The ability to protect you (“Protect Me”). Those should not be seperate skills that we need to carry with us. Our pets should be able to do this by default.
I think that “Sic ’Em” and “Search and Rescue” are the only shouts that should be kept. “Sic ’Em” is the closest to how shouts were in GW1, bringing function and boosting the pet at the same time. The cooldown is a bit too long, though. “Search and Rescue” is another useful one, but the pet should gain more protection as it is rezzing. Because the pet isn’t protected at all, that makes the ranger’s dedicated res skill one of, if not the, weakest rez skill in the game.
Main: Caeimhe – Sylvari Ranger
Alts: Charr Guardian, Asura Elementalist, Human Thief, Norn Necromancer
Which is odd because spvp is pretty much a ghost town.
Balance a game based around a game mode nobody plays..
My only concern is that the pet takes so much attribute points before it really means something for a ranger.
You need 30 points for the pet to let it really function as a part of the ranger and that is a problem at the same time.
gw1 pet system was much better. if u want the pet. u must to equick a skill. no forcing to do that! btw nearly nobody did that in serious games. only one good build used that, the bunny thumper
(ranger with hammer! whohaaa! i want a hammer!)
The Ranger Spear build with perma rampage as one was my favorite pet build:p.

I’ll say it again. Allow pets to rally when you kill an enemy.
It’s not a bad idea, but I can see one major problem. It’s not going to address the issue of pet’s survivability during boss fights in dungeons, when the only enemy to kill will be the boss himself.
Warning! – These are my opinions. These are simply ideas I came up with on the fly when considering the current hindrances to the Ranger profession.
Simple, simple fixes to bring Rangers on par with the rest of the professions;
1.) Every time the Ranger dodge rolls, their pet receives a 1 second buff that allows them to evade all incoming attacks.
2.) Give pets an increase in attack range. Currently, most are around 130 in range. An increase to 200 or even 260 would resolve the issue of pets missing most their targets because their reach will be longer.
3.) Pets stay behind targets unless the target is fixated upon them. This would help with enemies that cleave.(I know ANet tried to do something like this before, but it honestly only works half the time.)
Something else I was considering was the idea of giving pets an inherent AoE resistance (much like WoW does for hunter pets.) While it may be a cheap way of handling things, keep in mind that it would also be a lot easier to code.
It would also help if ANet stopped nerfing pets :P
Do you agree/disagree with these ideas? Anyone else have ideas that would help the Ranger profession’s current situation?
