Bring back the old login screen!

For all those beta testers out there, after reading this on reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/19roh6/for_all_of_those_who_played_the_gw2_bwe_1/ I’m happy to see that I’m not the only one who misses old beta login screen, just a doubt, would be possible for developers to allows us to choose or change the login screen?

I know one of big advantages for the current login screen is the news area, but we had a lot of available space in the old login screen!

Well I hope a developer can answer pro/cons about this and if it’s not possible just tell us why :P

Here’s a video for those who didn’t play during beta

I just thought I’d let you know that this is what has happened for me. I do know about traits but since I don’t run dungeons, or any other heavy group-based content that might exist, I’ve never needed to switch them out or change to a weapon that a particular character has never used for some particular skills or even just used different skills. I’m not sure it has increased my skill level but its definitely cleared the rust away and make me think a bit more.

That’s awesome! To the extent that it got you to stop and think after a defeat, and come up with alternate strategies… THAT is improving your skill. It’s not like we want everyone to magically get faster reflexes or become Nintendo Wizards. If we are limited to making content that has to be able to be rolled over by anyone without thinking, our events can only be reskinned versions of the same thing over and over. I hope that there are lots others like you.

Can I suggest a more focused training program for the individual for a future patch?

You’d need to make it essentially mandatory, either by rewards or locking Legendaries, level 80 or something behind it.

Have something that specifically teaches dodges, something that specifically requires trait swapping, something that specifically teaches positioning.

I really like this idea. Sounds like something that could be worked into the personal story. There’s a game I’ve been playing lately that does this really well called Desktop Dungeons. It’s makes learning the more advanced skills a puzzle game, so learning is fun and not a chore.

High failure isn’t fun. Tension isn’t fun. Feeling hopelessness and dread because your server can never muster the numbers to have a shot at success isn’t fun. Feeling like you’re being forced to get better isn’t fun.
The moment you do any of this, it stops being a game and becomes a job. It becomes work.
That isn’t fun, period.

So there are many ways to categorize gamers, and one useful way is by looking at what they want out of a game. Here’s a really great video by my friend James Portnow on the subject of the aesthetics of games, and why people are drawn to certain types.

From what you’ve said, (Includeing: “All I want from a video game is a relaxing, entertaining ride.”) it appears that what you come to GW2 for is abnegation. You can skip to 7:25 to hear about it. But it essentially means that one wants to escape the real world to go to a relaxing comfortable place for a while. This is a core aesthetic of most MMOs, and GW2 is no exception. The vast majority of our content is PvE abnegation. We all love it. It’s the foundation from which the rest of our systems are built. However, being a diverse lot, we also have other aesthetics we want to pursue, and as a result we attract other kinds of players with other motives for playing. People who ENJOY some amount of tension, who want to learn. Who like to fail from time to time in order to challenge them to come up with new and creative strategies. This challenge and learning is the basis for most video games that have existed. In Mario if you don’t learn to jump when a Goomba walks up to you, you die. There is pleasure inherent in learning for most people if the context is correct. It sounds like you have a very specific idea of what contexts learning should occur, and don’t count your MMO playing time as one of them. And that’s totally cool. We want to appeal to you and others like you. That is why the vast majority of the game is designed the way it is. We don’t want our game to feel like work. We want people like you to find the process of expanding your skillset fun and exciting. And that’s why there is such a range of content. There are others who land further toward the challenge end of the spectrum than you, and we need to keep them engaged as well. No single person is going to find every piece of content we release a perfect fit for their gaming pleasure. I hope you can understand that it’s not malice or stupidity that keeps us from creating 100% of our content to fit your specific tastes, or that makes us want to expand the overall skillset of the player-base.

tl,dr: Not all content is going to appeal to all players. So we make a range.

1- I use greatsword and axe+wh (greatsword let’s me dodge, which is critical for 1 hit bosses)

2-Yes.

3-Yes.

4- Spider and jaguar/jungle stalker for might.

5- No, I use soldier with zerk trinkets.

I am a dungeon forums frequenter. And the axe on a ranger is seen as a giant No No. That thing is terrible, and will often get you kicked. Running stuff like that will create the bag stigma people have with Rangers. The Longbow is the obvious kick on sight, but axe rangers are generally viewed as not knowing their class(I’m not being mean here, just letting you know what the perception is).

Same as Guardian. If they join the dungeon holding a staff, mace or scepter then they get the boot. Unless its TA, and the staff is only for clearing blossoms.

Point I’m trying to make, is that Rangers dig themselves their own grave by running terrible builds, then it makes everyone who plays the class suffer. The reason why guardians are often saved from being so strictly banished, is because people are dumb. A bad guardian is a bad guardian. They should be booted just as quick as bad rangers, but the general masses of pugs don’t know how to properly filter out bads from goods, so they just use the “kick all X class”.

Any group worth their salt will keep a ranger who has:
1.) sword
2.) spotter, frost spirit
3.) zerker

So if you run the right build and get kicked. Its their lost. If you run a bad build, then you are to contributing to the negative stigma of your class.

The Skinny Privilege of GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ashen.2907

Ashen.2907

Let me get this straight…

You cannot feel connected to your character, a sentient plant, because he is skinny…

Not because he is a walking cabbage. Because he is a skinny walking cabbage…
——————————————————————-

I am not sure what degree of real life we should attempt to instill in our characters. If my character is fair skinned should I have to worry about sunburns ? If overweight should his movement rate and general stamina be reduced ? Should the heavier character have to be concerned about an increased possibility of developing various health problems such as diabetes ?
——————————————————————————

Even so, I do hope that you can find some way to connect with your characters so that you can continue enjoying the game.

Is precursor crafting going to happen or not?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Xcom.1926

Xcom.1926

You will absolutely see a way to create a precursor available in the future. As detailed in our plans for the second half of the year here:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/

As mentioned at the end of the blog, as always things are subject to change as test and prepare various systems. Most of the stuff covered in the blog you’ve already seen implemented, or steps towards being implemented, however the precursor building (and corresponding additional legendary items) is the one highest at risk to not make it this year.

It is still something we absolutely plan to do!

So we’re seeing “replace a dungeon path with a somewhat buggy one, Add lore-breaking stories to the game, E-SPORTZZ and create 2-minute Content™”

Instead of
“focus on what the playerbase actually wants and has been asking for”

Angry forumposters =! playerbase

Agreed, usually the player base silently just quits. The angry ones on the forums are the one with hope.

You have gotten what you paid for, all that remains is biweekly gemshop pushing.

Yes because your time zone is so much more important than the rest of the world. Ridiculous. You can’t restrict other people from playing the game just because you don’t want them to.

It amazes me that people don’t realize to this day that they are not the center of the universe.

I could show you screen shots from Devona’s Rests Lions Arch map @ all of the prime times. Nothing about that server is very high. I think this is how ANET makes the game look appealing to people coming in for a new game, if they see all of the servers are Very High or High when they are actually Low/Medium they think these players will think the games more active?

Devona’s Rest = Very High population.
Reality = Very Very Very Low population.

Back in my day of game & code, developers played their game well. They were the ones who know most if not all of the exploits, tricks, tactics & techniques to pass hard contents. And they have had passion for game.
Do we still have this type of developers here now a day? Or just theoretical “spread sheet” coders?

I fully support this challenge.

What an idea! + 10000, Anet, common, what’s the matter? Still no response? tick tock tick tock, we are waiting. You who balance this game and think the challenges could be done just fine by the public should be able to play your own challenge right?

Don’t forget:
1) No character switching during play.
2) Group should be an mix of all classes, must include at least one ranger AND 1 necro (4 guards and 1 thief???? hmmm, something fishy here)
3) HP and strength of MOBS should be normal, not HP = 1.
4) No ascended armors ! we don’t even have that yet.
5) Better hire more moderator to infract us after the live-stream because there is going to be alot of LOL.

If ya no longer see me after this post,

This, more or less.

Although I’ve said before that I’d like to see this, I’m coming around to a way of thinking that is: If noone can beat it, does it really matter? Many people keep saying GW2 has no challenge, presumably, FotM was originally designed to give players “the ultimate challenge”. If one fractal is not beaten for months, or even years, isn’t that a good thing? It would give the team that finally does so a lot of bragging rights.

I think if there were a dev team actually focussed on playing their game/streaming it and commenting on what they are doing etc to share knowledge it would greatly benefit their game.
As mentioned above, the challenge should be attempted with a BALANCED team. NOTE: Not 3 warriors, 1 guardian and a mesmer :P
