Hey all,
We understand that there are many opinions and suggestions about the game versions and the pre-purchase program. We will continue to read your thoughts and thank you for sharing them.
At last, a sign of life from the aNet office! Honestly though.. We need a character slot or we cannot play the expansion, not going to delete 1600 gems worth of bagspace :-(
800 gems would be the perfect compensation, let people choose if they want a character expansion slot, or spent it on a fancy dress in game. I’m sure the mayority will accept that as compensation.

Since I no longer plan to get HoT at this point in time, I see no reason for me to continue to play GW2 at the moment. I stuck by you guys for a ton of years, while all of my friends bounced and went to other games. None understood why I kept playing GW1 at that time. I kept the faith even after my original account was hacked and I had to buy the trilogy again while everyone was telling me to join them in the various games they were playing at that time. I stuck by you guys through a ton of gripes that I won’t list here (I’m trying to keep this short).
I’m not saying I’m gone for good, but it’ll be a cold day down under before I pay 50 bucks for that expansion as is. And until I buy HoT, I see no reason to continue playing this game. I’ll holla when HoT no longer looks like a horrible purchase to me. I’m not paying 100 bucks just to feel like I’m actually getting my money’s worth and the base pre-order package ain’t worth 50 bucks in its current iteration. So… peace out for now.
After looking around this thread, this summarizes my thoughts and circumstances exactly. As one of the last few in my circle of friends who actually stuck with GW for years, I won’t be encouraging anyone to come back to… this.

A response finally. Greatly appreciated but a decision needs to be made quickly in order to reverse some of the damage that has been done.
There’s 60 pages of suggestions and feedback. Most stem toward adding an extra character slot for the $50 version instead of a free (useless to us) copy of the core game.

I’m another long term member of Guild Wars (played GW1 since 1st year of release) and yet I hardly ever visit the forums to comment. That being said, I had to respond to the pricing set for the new HOT expansion. I personally see the current options as completely unfair for long term players of GW2. Why should long term players that have already bought the game once be expected to pay the same amount as a new player will pay to get both the core game and the expansion? That makes no sense whatsoever. The long term players are basically paying double the price for the exact same thing. We are getting punished for being long term players and supporting the game since day one? Anet you really dropped the ball on this one. I have been a big supporter of the gem store as well, as I’m sure a lot of other long term players have. This is yet another avenue where long term players have pumped more money into the game than new players. Im going to have to seriously consider my ongoing support of gem store items, very much disappointed with you Anet … you really blew this one. Someone needs to make this right and offer a expansion only purchase option at a lower price

@Gaile, one thing that would be helpful is if the content of the expansion wasn’t so vague. If we’re getting TONS of stuff equal to say Nightfall was for Guild Wars 1 – might help us accept the pricing (well, some of us). Maybe if we really knew what the $50 (or more for the other editions) was getting us…
I definately think that a character slot or two for those that already own the core game would be a good move as well since the “free core game” really doesn’t act as an incentive if you’ve already got it… (I do think, for new players, it’s a great idea.)
(All IMO)

My husband and I are absolutely not going to buy “HOT + the core game” if we have already been faithful GW2 players for 2 years, that is absolutely kitten ridiculous. Loyal fans are getting punished while noobs are getting their butts wiped for them? Talk about a huge turn-off. We certainly won’t buy anything else from this company.

If the base game is “free” then why did you remove it from the Shop area? It should be available to download for “free.” Either way, if new players are getting something of value that fluctuated between $10-40, why is everyone else being ignored?

I think this person nailed it:
Just give a choice: extra slot or base game
Seems like a simple solution. I’d happily pay $50 for expansion +1 slot as a vet. A new player gets great value by getting the base + HoT and has 5 empty slots to work with. But let me choose!Personally, I will get the ultimate because I’ve gotten far more than $50 of value out of the game over the years and I have no problem giving ANet my $. But I think they’d quickly quell the concerns of the masses with the above solution.

I think an issue at this point is not only what will resolve the issue but how will they apologize to the community. With so much hate atm just throwing in something without an apology still would leave alot of lingering emotions xD

Or, it could be that the expansion itself is $50, but in an attempt to attract new players the core game comes ‘free’ to them if they bought the expansion at the same price as the rest of us.
It’s a common marketing and economic tactic that works wonders, not a single quality MMO hasn’t done something like this before.
Do you believe the expansion is worth $50 though? Not to dismiss the work ANet put into it, but from everything we’ve seen it’s a mini expansion, it doesn’t offer nearly as much that every other quality MMO’s expansion does at this price point. The only thing that could justify this price is if the core game was bundled in with it at a 50%~75% discount or if ANet has been really coy and is actually including an entire continent in HoT to surprise us with.
I hope it’s the latter, because if it’s the former I have to really wonder if we’re going to be saddled with an extra account every time an expansion comes out.

I just think they made a mistake I think the should have worded it like this “Contains the core game for new players” I think people would be less upset if they just thought this through a little. The price point is inline with the industry standard pricing so I don’t have a problem.
So 50 for the core game + xpack for people who do not own it.
And 50 for the xpack for people who do?
Yep, that would make everyone happy.

You guys realize that $20 is roughly the cost of any living story. IE one or partial sections of one kittenty map and maybe 3 missions right?
All of you people expecting this for $20 are just not thinking, at all. It’s pretty funny.
I agree the standard should have a character slot. I also expected it to cost $50 and you should have expected it too.
Given that Anet has sold GW for what, $5? in the past, I seriously hope that they drop the price to $44.99 and let the people cry about it.
Please explain how you think this expac is adding enough content to be worth the price of the base game at release lol
Foreal, some people say stupid stuff… Who pays for the living story anyway?!
Why should people who purchase the expansion also be forced to purchase the core game for a second time?! There should be a package that inclused the core game and HoT, but seasoned players should not have to purchased the core game again in order to obtain the expansion! That is a big pile of B.S.

There is no way to justify making players that already have to game to re-buy the whole game just for the expansion, this makes no since and I’m not paying 50 dollars, or more, for a game I already have. They either need to make a new option that gives players with the game a reason to buy it (Such as offering more character slots, gems, or something that covers the cost of the core game), or drop the price for players with the core game already. Either way I won’t be pre-purchasing until this issue is fixed.

I think it’s very sweet of them to offer the base game for free, however I’ve never purchased an expansion that came with a new class and no new character slot. I suppose anet could trying to encourage us all to buy a new character slots with the gold we’ve been farming out in the silverwastes. If it’s not, that’s shame. It’s what I’ll be doing as I have zero interest in the digital items the more expensive editions offer.

I am also very disappointed about this. I think most people are missing the point that people like me are upset about.
If you’re a new comer to Guild Wars 2, then you would have paid $50 for Guild Wars 2, the Core Game and the Expansion.. While veteran players the source of ANets, renewable income are paying $100.
If you already have the Core Game, then I seriously doubt that you would actually obtain a secondary account. It just does not make sense to have the veteran players purchase the Core Game twice, and only have one account. You’re not being fair to those who have been loyal tot he game. Also, you’re not even giving the people an additional character slot for the new profession, unless that want to cough up another $25 and get the deluxe edition (for spend $10 for 800 gems in game or convert in game currency).
It just feels like the seasoned players are being milked for every penny, while any new comers to the game would have paid HALF of what the seasoned players have had to pay. This just.. does… not… make… sense.
There needs to be an option for the people who already have the core game to be able to purchase the expansion on its own.

I was expecting maybe $40 at the absolute most (and with a character slot to boot), but $50 with no slot…
That’s just steep enough to push me into considering taking a break from the game and coming back when the price drops or there’s a sale or something.
And I feel bad for anyone who recently bought GW2 in preparation for HoT.

Seriously, I’d even pay 30 for this with just the expac. The core game is at least worth 20 dollars at this point, Anet really thinks the expac is actually the same amount of content as the base game?

Haven’t been on in a while. I come back and see were able to pre- purchase HOT: Good! But 50 dollars for a Expansion for something a lot of us already own: NOT Good!
There better be more than a few maps skills and armor if you’re gonna get people to buy into this. Because you took big leap backwards with this one. Why do we need to pay the game again. If its tailoring towards the new people that will get into the game fine. But like me and others, we’ve been around since day 1 (3yrs)! This doesn’t do anything for us.
I get it… You’re trying to get your community to leave aren’t ya well you’re doing a fantastic job at that if you’re fishing for a compliment on this.

Hey, John Smith, bought the $99.99 version. The value isn’t what I’d call “ideal,” but I am one of the players that was looking to buy a physical collector’s edition ($150-200.) Overall, disappointed with the versions offered, but I was going to buy gems tonight anyway – ended up working out I guess. Also, HOW DARE YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO PAY FOR YOUR EXPANSION.
Sorry your official forums are full of vitriol instead of more constructive feedback.
Im sorry, in this situation you are the 1% and every single other person is the 99%. your voice doesnt mean more than every one elses just because you had 100 dollars to blow on gems

Perfect example of ArenaNet’s dishonesty.
So, ArenaNet expects people to:
• Pay FULL price right now (it’s not even a pre-order, they’re calling it a pre-purchase)
• For a product we have NO IDEA when we will receive, since they have not given us even a release window, much less a release date
• Asking an ABSURD price for what is basically Living World Season 3 plus a few new skills.
• No new character slot, despite how the expansion comes with a new profession thus of course a lot of players will want to make a new character.
• AND, new players get the full game plus the expansion, while veterans, those who actually funded the expansion, get to pay the same price for less than half the same content.
This is pathetic. I knew ArenaNet was hurting for money, but this is way too much.
People, if you want a honest deal, go here:
With the Summer Sale that is happening right now, you’ll find lots of games to keep you busy until this so-called expansion gets slashed to a decent price.
And to those of you who are buying HoT right now, all I have to say is: “a fool and his money…”

if you look at the world through the cold cynical eyes of economics
You rang?
Thanks for a second slap in the face. Your loyal players are clearly already upset so the support is resorting to giving sarcastic comments instead of dealing with the issue at hand? That’s what my money is going towards?
I think there should be another option of payment added to people who already have a core game. It’s unfair to the loyal customers who have been here since the first preorder. I have 2 seperate accounts and I refuse to buy 2 more core games on top of the ones I own already.

Some of us aren’t interested in buying a boatload of gems, and we’re not interested in some exclusive collectables or a physical box with a figurine or whatever. Like I truly get that you value and enjoy those types of things, but not all of us do.
There is not a reasonable option for those of us who only want to add the expansion to our existing accounts. That is valid feedback.

How to make it more fair:
Reduce price of core game to $20. Lower price of Expansion to $40. Offer a deal to buy both for $50. Ta da!

How is it a bonus? It isn’t like we suddenly have an extra copy of the game lying around. It isn’t going to be GW2 and HoT, as seperate entities.
Unless you mean we should take the copy we already paid for, and hand that and the serial number over? Which is technically true, but not a particularly elegant solution.
And, really, it isn’t the $50 that has most people upset. It’s the $50 for absolutely nothing besides access to the expanded content. Previous GW expansions at the very least included an expansion slot for new character classes at the base purchace price. With this, we’re being told just access is $50, another character slot will take an additional $25 to get (with fluff).
One could cynically assume that they are banking on people being cranky about that, and buying gems to get a character slot, instead.
