"Play How I Want" Is Gone

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lishtenbird.2814

The “Play How I Want” concept of the originally developed and advertised game (disregarding the origin of the quote) is steadily fading away with every patch:

It’s extremely important that we stay true to our philosophy that you should be able to play Guild Wars 2 the way you want to play the game in order to reach the most powerful rewards. — from Colin Johanson on Guild Wars 2 in the Months Ahead, January 2013

Of course it’s not only about “most powerful rewards” (even if enjoyment is the best reward you can get from a game), but about the overall feeling of freedom the game had – which definitely existed and which is the reason “Play How I Want” quote became so popular and went far beyond the meaning of “get BiS gear anywhere” in the community.

How did it happen?

WORLD BOSSES

Before:

  • Open an online timer for your server, group with like-minded players and do events that you want when you want. Feel yourself as a hero who willingly saves Tyria from daily threats! Feel how the world is living and changing because of you, coordinate with people and announce the next boss you gonna beat!
  • Beat a world boss with some 3-5 people next to you at low hours, and feel great because it was challenging and fun! Or do not beat it and understand that your efforts were not enough and you should get better.

Now:

  • After the Megaservers improvement, put a list of times for world bosses next to your PC and stop doing whatever you were doing offline to join the boss you want to play. Feel like you’re doing a scheduled task at your job in the office.
  • Always be accompanied by a megazerg, tag and spam “111” to win. No need to know the encounter, you won’t see anything because of particle effects and lags.

HOME WORLDS

Before:

  • Choose a server you like, be it a Spanish server or an unofficial RP server, speak the language of your choice and get to know “your” people.
  • See the same people, get acquainted and say “hi” on your favourite journeys.
  • Build a WvW community, recruit and ask for help!

Now:

  • After the Megaservers improvement, get placed with random people who speak different languages and can’t care less about you and your interests.
  • Meet random people you’ve never seen before and never will.
  • Forget about talking about WvW in map chat.

UNLOCKING TRAITS

Before:

  • Start leveling and get new stuff to make your build better (with 3 tiny payments) straight away. Do what you want and enjoy the aspects of the game you like! It doesn’t matter if it’s your 1st or 64th character, you simply play!

Now:

  • After the Trait improvement, grind all over the world (including WvW) with each and every character doing the same stuff over and over again. Or pay tons of money with gold and skillpoints (which you have to collect and which have gold value) to unlock it for each and every character.

UNLOCKING SKILLS

Before:

  • Start leveling and unlock new skills gradually and rapidly. Receive skillpoints to unlock skills here and now.
  • Do content depending on your skill, and not your level. 10th character? Will feel like a breeze!
  • Equip weapons and kill stuff to unlock all 5 weapon skills straight away. Love GS5 skill? Unlock it and use it now!

Now:

  • After the NPE improvement, start leveling and grind with “1111211112” to the level where you can unlock the skills. Wait for levels to get some skillpoints.
  • Do content depending on your level, and not earlier. 10th character? Your problem.

PERSONAL STORY

Before:

  • Play PS when you want and how you want. Experienced? Jump above the level requirement and beat it because you can!

Now:

  • After the NPE improvement, play PS in chunks when they know for sure you can beat it and won’t uninstall the game from the frustration of understanding that you’re not skilled enough. Experienced and want challenge? Your problem, grind and wait.

EXPLORATION

Before:

  • Walk around the world and feel like a free hero. Do what you want when you want.

Now:

  • After the NPE improvement, follow the arrows (and press [F] to win). No need to make decisions.
20 level 80s and counting.

I’ve said this before in other posts, but i’ll say it here as well since it seems to need repeating.

I am a long time GW player going way back to the start of GW1. I still remember the old health bars that didn’t change color to depict the kind of damage you got from way back then and the arenas at the various outposts.

I have been a major fan of the series. I complain about the things I complain about now BECAUSE i care. i care A LOT about this franchise and the world of Tyria. I care about the lore and the NPCs and my role in this world. I care about the overall success of the game. Its because I care so much that I take so many of the recent bad changes so personally since it honestly feels like Anet has been collectively saying “this game is no longer for you”.

I still log in to see if there is anything else I can suggest and to test new content so i can give feedback, but lately all it feels like is if i were talking to a wall. It feels like the only thing that truly concerns Anet devs is whether their bottom line will be affected by a given change, and if the answer is yes, then they put all hands on deck to “fix” it and if not, then well…you get posts that go on for 58 pages and people leaving game modes because nothing of note has changed since launch.

I’d hoped that GW2 was going to deliver this awesome dynamic world, and early on it looked that way. Now, not so much.

Is it one of the prettiest games out there? Yes. Does it have a great combat system? Sure. Does it still grab me? Not really. :/ That makes me sad.

I appreciate the value of constructive feedback but the online GW2 community just seems so ungrateful and unappreciative Just think of the negative image you are portraying for new/potential players. I think more people should know how great this game really is.

If I was Anet and I read all the crap people complain about I would find it a little disheartening. So I’m posting for the first and only time to say the following:

Anet, I love this game and I think you guys have done a fantastic job. Thank you for all your hard work! Dont forget there are people that really appreciate this game and work thats gone in to it.

New & Potential players, come and give this game a shot and decide for yourself if you like it Don’t get caught up in the negativity of some people . The complainers are the loudest voices but there is a great community in this game if you give it a try.

How about a forum rule that deletes any “X is OP” threads unless the player attaches their gameplay video so the community can debate whether “X” is OP or whether the player needs to change the way they play. Said video must also show build/traits to allow for informed discussion.

It might be enough to trigger discussion but the point is proof. To prove that something is too strong, the OP needs to provide evidence involving all factors into their hypothesis.

There is no other way.

The problem as I see it, is that everyone who makes a thread here has a bad habit of making definitive claims. You never see someone make a thread and simply suggest they feel something might be over powered. They simply make rant threads, proclaim something as OP as if it were a cold hard fact, and are completely close minded when it comes to any opposing argument. Which simply invites more close minded claimers.

I didn’t take that from that post at all.

He was calling out someone who is complaining about a one trick pony that has a minor impact in the actual competitive aspect of this game that it is almost negligible
Because it can be countered really really easy.

People would rather complain about everything than take 10minutes to figure out what it’s doing
why it’s doing it
and how you can counter it effectively.

Then you should learn to spot straw-men.

What Mark said it’s true, Anet it’s doing again and again the same mistakes in “balancing” the game. I’ll give you an example regarding their process.

If you’re an old enough player of the game, you should remember that for quite a while thieves could melt most people down playing S/P with Haste (and with melting I mean it, quickness would last even during the stomping). Thieves pointed out that the problem was not in PW in itself, but in quickness, and that that effect should have been nerfed.

Guess what: first, Anet nerfed by 15% the dmg of PW, leaving quickness as it was. Months later, they proceeded to nerf quickness from 100% to 50% speed, never reverting the changes in PW.

Or, look at it now about thief s/d build: the problem was/is not in the FS/LS skills, but in their synergy with feline grace and air/fire sigils (again, passive procs!). Thief players were shouting this thing since a lot of time. You know pretty well what happened, Felince Grace and the sigils remained untouched, Anet made some random/idiotic changes to FS/LS, now the weapon set is way subpar and not viable anymore in pvp (at least, vs any competent player).

This is the same about the topic at hand: Nightmare runes are not, overall, a problem. But, when coupled with a specific build of the Necro, they create a problem. And I fear (pun intended) that their solution in the future will be: nerf Necro leaving the runes as they are.

So, in the end, the fact that Anet just messes around when trying to balance things out and ends up in creating more problems than before, it’s true.

Versus players - why Ranger changes are good

Now why is this good for us? Well simple, the introduction of a viable Power Ranger build, though it has yet to be proven, forces us simple minded people to think and adapt. We need to make new builds to counter these forces, or we will keep on being killed by them as they pew pew us to death…
Power Rangers can attain a certain role within their group, though it is currently in debate what kind, but if they settle, we need to adjust as we did before;

When the so called “Condition Meta” was ruling, Guardians were shoehorned within their Shoutbuild
Many renowned Guardians would argue that this is simply the way to go, and there should be no debate in that, up untill indeed the Power Rangers are starting to rise…
Now suddenly, and looking at the current sustain bunker+Power meta, you will start to notice that Guardians can more and more shift away from their current build, and concentrate on mitigating other sources of damage – with shouts maybe, but what about Wall of Reflection and Shield of Absorbtion ?
Only good against Rangers you think? Think again, these two alone can ensure a very stable fight against any kinds of Projectiles – Warrior Longbow, Power Necromancer Lich, Mesmer with Staff and Scepter etc.. etc.
Now we are still in “Lalaland” looking at theorycrafting, but what I wanted to point out is that a sudden shift in power can make underused, or previous considered “weak” builds stand out a lot more…

What about Focus Elementalists? Or Staff Elementalists? Reflects on Engineers, Mesmers, and my personal favourite, Warrior’s Missile Deflection ? I have had a ton of fun just running a simple Skullcrack build, only to see Rangers becomming completely confused as to what to do as I approached them with a Missile Deflecting Stance

The Ranger Changes have made us think, most people do not want to adapt their current builds and/or mindsets, but in general, shifting the power to a class with such a unique way of doing damage will ensure a better variety of builds within the Meta Game…
Are Rangers truly Overpowered? I would argue and say no, give it a couple of weeks for people and their builds to adapt, and you will notice them being in healthy position. Besides, many Rangers I have spoken with already know the flaws within their Build, so now it is up for everyone else to find those as well

I hope it was a fun read, and I certainly hope for more shifts in power – the sheer fact that I have made several builds already that might become viable in the longer run excites me more than anything else

Alrighty, these are the challenges I like the most, so here we go! Incomming wall of text!

I got 13 characters now, of which I have one that is a constant spare… Amongst these, I have played nearly all of them to some extend, excluding Thief and Ranger, which I only “played around with”.

Ranger is the only class in which I have played less than 50 PvP matches with, even my Thief has been touched upon more.

Reason I write this, is because people tend to say that those protecting the Ranger changes are “Biased Rangers” themselves, but no, this is comming from a guy who plays Ele, War and Necro most, and a close fourth being Guardian…

But Brandon, those running Gattling Guns insta kill you with just pressing 2, it is not fair!

Yea whatever…. I decided to look past some of the things that have been said, mainly complaints about Rapid Fire and see what is actually the case… I can tell you, and shame on you because you fell for it;

For the longest time, about a year if not longer, Rangers were “a class to ignore”… Sure, Spirit Rangers became “viable” at some point, but even those were no where close to being truly overpowered…
After Elementalists came back into the meta game, the support a Spirit Ranger could give, was the one Spirit of Nature pretty much becomming a soft support healbot… Whooptydoo, the Spirit was an actual bigger threat than the Ranger

But then the 9th came, and all of a sudden things changed! Rangers got skills, traits and utilities buffed, and “ah ma gawd” you cannot ignore them anymore! And here ladies and gentlemen is the actual problem….

Most people hate adapting… We have been “stuck” with a nearly the same Meta ever since I joined the scene, and probably before that as well. There have been almost no big shifts within the meta, aside from people picking up a more popular class/build over another – in essence, the roles of a class barely to never changed… Reason why Guardian almost never had changes within this past time is “because they were in a good spot” or rather “the changes were so minimal that the Guardian’s role remains unchanged”

So how does this relate to Ranger, or more specifically Power Rangers? Good question, so allow me to answer;
Power Rangers are unique within most Zerker Specs, it would be dreadful to explain, but I will tell the most obvious things about them; They use projectiles as their main source of damage on range, got no teleports, no instant gap-closers and no other way to mitigate damage other than dodging (Aside maybe from the stealth on longbow). If you think about it, all we need to do is find a way to combat this

NCsoft released their 2014 Q2 financial report.

GW2 generated about 25 million dollars in the last 3 months, a little bit less compared to Q1(30 million $), which is almost the same as 2013 Q4. I don’t have early figures about the whole 2013 fiscal year, but here I can come up with some financial status about GW2. Yes it remains stable, and is probably going to reach 100 million dollars at the end of 2014. I know YoY2013 is a little bit decreasing, but if u take a look at other major MMOs on the market (swtor, wildstar, eso, ff14). I have done some research on these MMOs (each game forum, 3rd party figures from mmorpg.com), every figure I saw told me GW2 surely has the largest player base among those MMOs, but nearly gets the lowest revenue(swtor get 150million in 2013, which has the smallest player base among those MMOs above).

Here are some thoughts about why it has gone this way. One thing must be the B2P model. GW2 is the only B2P game here, this surely won’t get as much as P2W and P2PØ at the beginning, but what comes after is the gemstore. As GW2 is not a P2W game, anet can’t put stat related stuff in the gemstore like other MMOs, but they can surely sell good looking skins, which they don’t. You can’t say black lion weapons are awesome nor armor skins from the “style” section in the gemstore. Some of them are even ugly. I believe this is the only MMO that I complain compay don’t sell enough on their real money in game market. This is weird, if I work as a product manager who develop few products that won’t match the needs of the customer, I would probably get fired many times already, and from the fiscal report we can see the most revenue anet got, was from gemstore transactions and new players (China launch is not included in 25million because it’s break down to loyalty revenue). Both of them are actually the same thing because people buy stuff from gemstore no matter if they are new or veterans.

Summary: Of all the mmos that was mentioned before, GW2 has largest player base, while making the lowest revenue (it’s still stable 2 years after launch which is good). Anet you really need to reconsider the stuff on gemstore and decide what to do next. Do it quickly.
