He is talking about the endless tonics you can make that consume the frame. Some people made the toys before knowing the recipe existed, so now they can’t make the endless tonic.

But the thing is out of hundreds of thousands of players with those frames, anyone had the ability to play with them in the Mystic Forge to see what would come out. If you decided to jump the gun and make the toy, before even knowing what all five toys would look like, then it’s on you, not Anet for putting in little easter eggs for people to discover.

A huge portion of this game is exploration and discovery. Anyone could have stuck that frame in the mystic forge and tried to see what would go with it.

This is how people have discovered all of the neat weapons and other things.

I got it on my third try. Sorry bout the luck some of the rest of you are having. You could try again after all the events. You’ll have three frames left over and 250 of one of the mats, so youll just need to buy some of the other.

A bit after Wintersday the market for them will crash down to nothing again and it will be cheap to try.

The invisible bag thing – that’s a good idea. I still think that maybe they could fix the functionality of the button to not include mini’s though. It’s much better to have an actual fix then a work-around imo.

This is assuming it’s broken.

Minis are a collectible. They have a collectible section in the collectibles tab of your bank storage. So clicking “deposit collectible” rightfully puts them in the appropriate place. Invisible bags aren’t a work around, they exist solely to keep you from accidentally selling things, and to hang on to collectibles that you don’t want auto deposited when you press the button.

Pretty sure that is working as designed.

repeatable next year?

in Wintersday

AcidicVision.5498

Hard to tell since it’s the first one. In the original, the activities pretty much remained the same, but the hat and cash-shop outfits changed every year.

I would expect next year to not see the Santa hat, Ear muffs and town clothes. They will most likely be replaced by something else.

The events I would guess would be the same, except for it being the first time for this event. They might have thought of some things they can make better or things they just want to replace. Eventually though, I wouldn’t be surprised for the main events to “stabilize” and be a consistent traditional thing from year to year.

Suggestion: Most popular/RNG gemstore items

in Wintersday

Posted by: AcidicVision.5498

AcidicVision.5498

If the mini-pets werent in the cash shop, then they would be drops so rare that most people would never see or get one.

You mentioned getting things in GW1, well that’s how GW1 worked. Got to bring up the Jingle Bear Mini in a thread earlier where someone was raging about a holiday item (unbreakable bell) having a ridiculously low drop rate and that GW was much better. But GW was the exact same thing.

Because of how popular the Mini Quaggan is, it would probably have a rarity along the lines of Chibi Gwen, or the Jingle Bear, or Evennia, or Dhuum. People farmed for those minis for years before getting one, if they ever did. Why did most of them do it? Because of the rarity. Make them available to anyone and they suddenly become junk.

Being in the cash shop (as much as I have issue with that also) gives you a better chance of actually getting the thing than you would ever have if they made it a drop. As for holiday minis, if you didn’t get it before the holiday then tough luck. You have a whole year to wait for another chance.

In the case of Celestial Minis, or promotional minis, if you missed it, then it was gone forever. You couldn’t just farm for a Celestial rabbit, or make another character and wait for a birthday to roll around.

Players toss all over this forums “I wish it were more like GW”, but don’t realize if it was, then they would be even more upset due to this wide spread idea that everyone is entitled to everything. “It’s not fair, I couldn’t play for the three days of the event and now can never get that mini” , “It’s not fair, I farmed 3000 presents and didn’t get the thing and my friend got it in five” , “It’s not fair for the people that bought the game after the event that can never get it”, “I don’t subscribe to that magazine, so I couldn’t get a code”… Ad-nauseam.

Giving an in-game way to get them would just cause a different kind of grief from players (see unbreakable bell thread, or countless other gift QQ threads). If the developers have no way to win to begin with, they might as well go the route that makes them a little money.

I will start with the usual, “I loved guild wars 1. I logged in more than 2k hours, blah blah blah, but…” on to the post.

I more than likely won’t be able to bring myself to play any more of RNG Wars 2.

Yes, call me a qqer and complainer and whatever else you want.

Well sir, since you requested it…you are QQIng and a whiner. Since that really is the fact of the matter here.

You say you played GW1 and logged thousands of hours…if that’s true, then you know about the Jingle Bear mini. That infamous mini that was a staple of Wintersday events that literally stole thousands of hours of life across all players and outside the internet very very few people ever actually seen one. It was one of the rarest items in the game with a 0.02% drop rate. So rare in fact, that even Gaile Gray didn’t know it existed.

From the beginning of Wintersday to the end people would repeat that event over and over and over in hopes of getting one and selling it for untold wealth.

So yeah, your piddly little three days farming up and opening some presents for a rare Wintersday item garners no sympathy from me. This is the Legacy of the Jingle Bear mini.

How are condition builds “worthless” in groups?

My guess is his issue is with having a 25 stack cap so everyone can’t play a bleed spec. Which is not actually an issue since you have three attributes on armor sets, can reset major trait bonuses and skills, and can communicate with your group beforehand to see if there is going to be a conflict.

But I’m not buying any more costumes until we get a costume locker or costume maker NPC. They just take up too much room in the bank. Yeah, except it’s part of the schedule on holiday events now. rolleyes I wonder when we can expect a kart racing diversion?

This is funny because Roller Beetle Racing was one of the big events in GW for Canthan New Years and it pretty much was cart racing.

One thing I’ve noticed from the original to this game is the amount of kittening that comes from event activities. I don’t recall anyone ever complaining they couldn’t get first place in roller beetle racing, or finish the snow man cave or a scavenger hunt because it was too hard, or that nine-rings was a scam (even though it was, you knew what you were getting in to).

People did the events they liked and didn’t do the events they didn’t. It’s that simple. There is no reward for the bells, or the jumping puzzle that you can’t get from presents doing four other different activities.

There are achievements, but by virtue of the name, if you want them then you need to achieve something. Achievements aren’t a handout. The 360, PS3 and Steam don’t patch out achievements that are too “hard” for people to get. Anet shouldn’t be pressured to trivialize their content for people that don’t like the activity to begin with thus want it to be as easy to complete as possible, or that want achievements they can’t naturally earn.

This JP is already easier than the Lost Shores Geyser and the Mad King’s Tower. So a concession on difficulty has already been made. How much easier can it realistically get before becoming just a bridge that gives you loot and an achievement for walking from one end to the other?

The remaining three you will need to buy from the cash shop if you want them.

Holiday boxes, feel like a rip off.

in Wintersday

Posted by: AcidicVision.5498

AcidicVision.5498

I made a lot of noise after Halloween about festival weapons being an RNG game in chests. So I was happy so see they gave us the option to buy them this time outright.

I spent a bit on the mystery boxes with the left over gems I had from getting the skins I wanted and don’t think they were too bad. Probably opened 10-15 and ended up with four minis (golem ship, festive golem, 2x snowman), a token for any one of the weapon skins, the hat and earmuffs, a bunch of crafting recipes, and presents with snowflakes and ugly junk.

I would prefer they do away with the boxes altogether, but at least they are getting a little bit better at handling them. The recipe for super rare minis, that requires trashing other minis you already paid for, wouldn’t sting nearly as bad if none of them were account bound. I have two snow-men. That doesn’t temp me to keep buying boxes to get another set so I can have all 4. It just aggravates me that I can’t sell it and that people can’t trade around their duplicates.

Edit: I retract that criticism. Just found out it is not the same as halloween, which required one of each of the event minis. This one requires any combination of three to make the Quaggan.

They might not be the best way to spend your gems, but at least they aren’t the fiasco was the Halloween BLC.

I liked it. It was just just hard enough to be challenging and not so hard as to induce mouse-throwing frustration.

The three different paths and life degen were brilliant. And I liked the pacing.

The wait before attempts didn’t bother me so much. The time you wait is proportionate to your performance. If you keep falling on the third snow flake, you’ll have to wait a while. If you get further in to it, then the wait is short. And unlike the Lost Shores geyser puzzle and Tower, you can watch other people still going from the lobby, which helps pass the time.

All and all this one hit a nice balance for a holiday activity. I understand the want for harder content and I’m all for that in PvE. But IMHO the limited time holiday stuff should be a little more accessible than the permanent higher skill bar stuff.

One complaint is the rewards are a little lack-luster. It might be easier, but it’s not that easy. Besides the karma jug, you could get everything else it offers from the open world gifts (unless I have just had bad luck with it). The chest is already one-a-day, so I don’t see the harm in it having a chance to drop one of the items from the Wintersday Mystery Box in place of a tonic or ugly sweater.

Smash the Town achievement bugged?

in Wintersday

Its not bugged. There are some tricky bits. In one of the northern towns there was a little picnic table or something that somehow didn’t get hit by our aoe. It was very easy to miss because it looked sort of like the rest of the rubble.

There is another little tiny tree next to the divinity’s reach castle. That was the one that was blocking the achievement for my group for like ten minutes. I’m sure that tree has made more than a few people think the achievement was bugged. Tiny model tree, not like the normal trees. Right up against the castle gate and extremely easy to not see.

It would be a nice quality of life thing to have mat storage be able to hold 999 of any given thing instead of 250. A lot of the higher end stuff in the game takes 250 or more of multiple mats, so being able to have more than that in the locker to check at a glance would be convenient.

Not really a huge deal. But would be handy.

Help With Frame Rate Plz?

$550 cuts it close but is doable. The thing that would push you over would be the OS if you don’t already have a Windows 7 key you can use. Some schools have software programs that let you get things like Windows for free. I know when I was in college I got three free Windows 7 keys from https://www.dreamspark.com/Student/Default.aspx

If you can avoid that $100 on the OS, have a mouse, keyboard and monitor or TV with a HDMI/DVI input, then system builders here can come up with something capable in that price range pretty easy.

It won’t exactly help in class or labs though if that’s something you require for your classes.

Help With Frame Rate Plz?

AcidicVision.5498

The CPU is weak. Anything under 3Ghz (of the AMD variety, I don’t really have much experience with intel) really stutters along. Especially dual core under 3Ghz.

You also don’t have a true dedicated graphics card in the laptop. The APU processor you have is a GPU and CPU combined. Which is meant more for media and less graphically intense games.

WoW ran acceptably because it’s a very old game that even had low system requirements when it was launched, by Blizzard design, since they wanted it to be able to run on practically any system.

I’m not sure that you can do anything other than return it (if that is even an option) and look for something with a quad core or dual core with a higher frequency, and integrated ATI or Nvidia mobile graphics card.

Other people are just out in the world. The starting cities aren’t very populated. Most people find their way to Lion’s Arch and use that as a central hub for all activities.

As a Sylvari the first area you will start in is Celadon Forest. I have never seen that area empty. Lots of Humans and other races go there when they finish their own starting areas just to gain a few more levels, skill points and crafting materials.

Run around, explore, participate in heart quests and Dynamic Events (the orange circles that will appear on your map), and other people in the area will just sort of organically come along and play with you.

Alternatively, make your way to Lion’s Arch and find yourself a new player friendly or alt happy guild that has people that have, or would start a new character to play with you through early stuff.

I suggested that he may as well get a new computer since he would have to get a new motherboard and processor. His GPU is on the low end and would likely need a new PSU to handle the new components. There’s also the issue whether his case is large enough for the new motherboard.

A lot of the suggestions people are making are not considering the compatibility with his current system configuration. Some of the motherboard/CPU suggestions will require a new PSU which is likely too big for the custom Compaq case. There’s also the possibility that the motherboards suggested are too big for the case as well.

While building a PC is rather simple nowadays, there’s still a lot that you need to consider rather than throwing together random components.

The motherboards and CPUs I recommended will fit a Mid ATX case. Which is what his case is. I looked at that while “throwing together random parts”. Also, it is within the limits of his 300w power supply but going with a 550 may push it over. Which I also mentioned.

So yes, I did consider those things. I appreciate you considered enough to check for yourself before assuming people were just throwing things out there.

@Shuyin, he mentioned not having a lot of money. If buying a new computer was an option, we wouldn’t have been talking about upgrades. The idea was to cannibalize as much of what he has as we can and see if the cost of the parts he has to buy are reasonable. So throwing around the idea to buy a new pc to run at 1080 and the best CPU would be an i7 isn’t really helpful, or on topic.

Intel i3 3240 is 257th ranked among processors currently, Phenom II 965 is 243rd. As tested by Passmark.

Updated today (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+II+X4+965&id=370).

That is really close performance wise. 4,141 marks vs. 4,329. But the intel is $40 more expensive for a processor that under-performs (even if it is only marginally). I am specifically talking about the ones mentioned, not brands or product lines in general. If you are looking at most of their dual cores or triple core APU buffoonery, then Solar is absolutely right.

/snip…Any quad-core AM3 CPU will do since they will work in AM2+ sockets such as your computer. The only issue is that you might need a BIOS update before you swap CPUs.

/snip…Getting 8GB is going to cost about $130, and for that amount of money you can get a new AM3+ motherboard + 8 GB RAM for less!

We have already been through these motions ^.^. Turns out his processor is soldered to the Mobo. Between that and the DDR2 memory, it’s just time for a upgrade. Now we are recommending upgrade packages of mobo/cpu/gpu/ram. For budget/performance.

I put up two, but the cheapest builds I could come up with are between $301 and $360.

Edit: I didn’t look at anything below quad core or under 3.0Ghz, I only looked at socket AM3 and FM2. I only considered AMD and Nvidia. I feel anything less wouldn’t give gains worth the cost and trouble, anything more just got too pricey, and it all meets the OP’s needs. Opinions may well vary, but that’s the angle I was coming from.

You can shave off close to $50 from either configuration by going with a 550ti instead and not lose a whole lot in the way of performance, but you only have a 300w power supply and 550 is a little hungrier.(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130744)

I prefer the second configuration personally. I am a bigger fan of a straight Phenom than the APUs. Even for a $20 bump. The mobo also has more features and comes with 8GB G.skill memory to offset that cost. It also supports SLI/Crossfire, up to 32 GB ram and is socket AM3+, so you will have room to grow.

I disagree with buying a whole new PC if you don’t have the money laying around. Most of the time you pay more for less, and there’s no sense in paying for a new case, dvd burner, and hard-drive when you have perfectly good ones laying around. That’s if you are comfortable putting it all together. But building PCs has been simplified to the point its pretty much grown up legos.

Thief. They kill things fast, level fast, move fast and are a very active and fun class that lets you either solo all of the main world PvE content or escape easily to regroup and try again if you are on the losing end of an encounter.

Mesmers are fun also because of the neat stuff they can do, but leveling them is a lot of work if you are playing alone.

650Ti isnt bad at all and I think it seen a recent price drop. The 550ti will also run the game on all med settings at a steady 45 FPS. Dips to about 35-38 in WvW. It’s about $50 cheaper than the 650.

Here is a direct comparison of the two:

There is a lot of give and take. The 650 has some higher clock speeds, but when it comes to the bells and whistles they trade off here and there.

Those are really the best options for that price range. Going up to the 660 or 580 is a pretty big leap.

edit: His budget and the cost of all of the pieces together would really determine which one over the other, but both are solid. The woman is running around in Queensdale as we speak locked at 48 FPS on a 550 (all med, hi-res textures, max draw distance).

How much would it cost to buy a motherboard, CPU and RAM that would run the game at medium quality?

For anyone to accurately help with that we need more details on what you have. You may be able save some money by recycling components.

First of all whats your budget?

What type of RAM do you have? (to possibly get a matching motherboard and DIMMS)

What size is the case? (to make sure people find motherboards and a gfx card that will fit)

How many fans and what size are you using?

What wattage is the power supply? (minimum CPU/GPU requirement + fans and USB devices)

Is your hard-drive IDE or sata? Do you have more than one? If IDE, does it have a sata connection? (again to make sure we find a compatible motherboard)

Are you using a 32 or 64 bit version of windows? (no point in buying more ram than system will recognize if you are on 32bit)

I built my girlfriends computer last year and kept the price under $400 and performance respectable by recycling an old case, power supply, DDR3 ram, hard-drive and CD rom. So we ended up only needing a CPU, mobo and graphics card.

My brothers computer was build from scratch with no existing parts for right around $600 because I got lucky and found a really good gaming bare-bones special on newegg.

At work. Cant open the Dxdiag. I just took the OP for his word that the card had 3GB of DDR2. Rather than assuming he was wrong I gave him the benefit of the doubt that maybe a third party such as PNY, MSI or the like manufactured a beefier version with more ram and OCd as they are often want to do.

And at a cursory glance at Passmark, his 610 out-performs the 7800 by nearly 100 marks. The 7800 hundred is the minimum system requirements.

Once again, running smoothly on low/med settings is better than barely running at all. I’m pretty sure this thread has served it’s purpose.

The general consensus is the change the CPU and add ram if you can. If/when you can afford to make the game look better, a video card is next on the list.

The reason i was consentrating on the GPU was becouse you said it was fine ..when it isnt.

Ok, lets elaborate, the game will be playable with the GPU he has with a steady frame rate in the low 30s, on mostly medium settings with shadows and reflections disabled.

Right now the CPU and ram make the game unplayable. So if he/she, just wants to play the game and money is an object (it is for most people), then the graphics cards is fine (especially since has some weird beefy after market OC version of it with 3GB DDR2 that I was unable to find) but the CPU needs to be upgraded and a bit more ram would certainly help.

Make it function, then make it pretty.

He could have a GTX 680 and it wont make the slightest difference paired with that processor. You are putting the buggy before the horse.
