As i am angry that there were no… useful updates, 50% chance is still not that good considering spirits share their buffs every 10 seconds at a 50% chance, and only last for 4 seconds.
i also feel pretty bad for Mr peters. he obviously likes the class, where as other devs wouldnt do the dirty work of telling us “there are plans instore”.

His co-workers probably said “jon i dont think you should tell them anything their just gonna get mad if they dislike 1 thing”.
of course his coworkers are right and are probably telling him “i told you so”

So now look at it, he was nice enough to tell us there were gonna be buffs, and reassuring that rangers are being fixed, but balances/bugs arent always easy fixes, not like they can say “ok you pet that cant attack moving targets… start hitting moving targets”.
How can you not feel bad? hes not directly in charge of fixing the classes, he said so himself, what he is trying to do is calm our nerves, we know there are more changes, we know there should be good changes, and we shouldnt be blaming jon for being a step above the rest of his coworkers and being a great guy.

So how do we vent our anger? go back to saying Anet, cuz theres more than 1 person that fixes/balances classes.
We should thank jon instead of blaming him>_>
Now as far as that goes i wish weapon fixes were in place too, sword root/bow projectile speed/weapons overall damage on every weapon. pets etc.

Anyways for now thanks Jon for communicating

Edit: class balances/fixes should be top priority but lookie here, new content is going to be coming out ALOT, its the holidays, halloween, thanks giving, christmas, new years, they are going to work to the bone to keep up to date with these holidays, and ontop of that fix the numerous game bugs. and more bugs just keep popping up, along with suggestions that they wanna implement. Now i dunno about you, but im giving a little more leg room, maybe 2 patches? 3 ill be fine, 4 might be cuttin it if i dont see some great improvements

I can agree with this. I am grateful that Jon drops by to give us information now and then. It is not something that he is required to do. Although, at times there seems to be mis-communication between what was said and what takes place. This leads to disappointment and the only person in particular people have to take their feelings out on is him.

Honestly, I am sure Jon would have loved to see rangers get fixed this patch. But there are restraints, like he said. Was I frustrated when I first saw the patch notes? Yes, I was. I thought there must of been a page or so of ranger fixes they forgot to note. I made a post shortly after that to express my disappointment. Also, do I believe there are still some points of disagreement between things Jon says needs to be done with rangers and what the community says? Yes, I do. But being able to at least have some communication between Anet is a good thing. And for that, I would like to thank Jon for his occasional posts.

Overall, I think community and perhaps even Jon as well had our expectations set too high for what was to come for rangers this patch.

I understand that there are time restraints, but in the last major patch Rangers received no changes at all. After that, we were promised SIGNIFICANT changes in the next patch. And what do we get, water skill improvements? None of the core issues were even touched in this patch.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The short bow debacle still hasn’t been resolved. Do you know that quickening zephyr still doesn’t work properly with with it? I am sure you do because there have been countless threads on it. Why has there been no comment in regards to this. Or is this another intended part of the “animation fix” you graciously gave Rangers.

It is also quite frustrating that Rangers are told that their Longbow and Sword are in a good position. Such a joke. You see countless threads about the problems with Ranger weapons, and you still don’t think there is a problem? Do you think the sword rooting the player in place in fine? Do you find the longbow subpar damage acceptable. Does the fact that Rapid Fire does no more damage than auto-attacking make it a good skill?

This patch was such a let down for rangers. At least rangers have been officially declared the profession needing most changes. That is not to say rangers will receive them, however…

Well at least the Ranger forum is pretty much the same as every other class forum.

1. Upset over either the nerf of their class or for not improving it.
2. Tired of playing an underpowered class.

Go figure.

The difference is we received zero changes the last past which was shortly after the short bow “animation fix”. We were then promised significant changes this patch. We received none.

Hi Anders, I’m totally not here so skip this post and read on…

We made the improvements we had time to test. There are still more ranger improvements but when our time is limited we have to focus on things we know we can fix. Signets and shouts are still on the docket, and I suspect some of each of these will get some love in the next time around. As you can see a lot changed in this build for every profession and we have to test these changes as well.

I do still believe ranger is the profession in most need of improvement after this patch and we will continue to make those improvements. If we could fix everything at one time we would, but the reality is there are a limited # of hours to make changes.

I see a lot of talk about ranger weapons, but I don’t think that is the real problem. I think sword and longbow are both good weapons, which is why the changes take longer. The problems are deeper, in pets ability to hit moving targets, trait lines with not enough viable choices and skills that are often too specialized to really compliment the weapon builds. These aren’t things we can change overnight. The change to Greatsword block was in fact a very difficult change, but we made it because we knew it was the right thing to do.

There are >500 skills in this game, 480 traits, and 2 designers working on this. Even then often we are bottle necked by other issues. I’m not going to say we are not working on these things, nor can I say there are things we could have changed but just ran out of time on, but this was a patch that contained ranger improvements and it will not be the last one that does so. Maybe you want more than honesty but that is what I currently have to offer.

Jon

I guess I shouldnt be suprised. The short bow debacle still hasnt been resolved. Do you know that quickening zypher still doesnt work properly with with it? I am sure you do because there have been countless threads on it. Why has there been no comment in regards to this. Or is this another intended part of the “animation fix” you graciously gave Rangers.

It is quite frustrating that after every patch you come here to do damage control and say, wait until next patch! Well, we waited! And what do we get. Nothing. Just another comment telling us to wait.

Also, you see countless threads about the problems with Ranger weapons, and you still dont think there is a problem? Do you think the sword rooting the player in place in fine? Do you find the longbow subpar damage acceptable. Does the fact that Rapid Fire does no more damage than auto-attacking make it a good skill?

Compare the Ranger to other professions. How can you honestly say that this is acceptable. It is nice that you acknowledge some of the issues, but you seem to be ignoring many other ones.

I am sorry, but I am very dissapointed with how Rangers are being handled in this game.

Pets F2 skills make the pet run to the target before using.

in Ranger

Posted by: Aethersong.5189

Aethersong.5189

The F2 skill will not work until the pet actually gets to target so it does not make a difference when u use f2 unless it is an aoe spell. Believe it or not that F2 attack is great. And from the comment from Aerthersong when you use the F2 skill it just does not seem to respond. Your right and it looks like it should be annoying but when the pet reaches it responds and does not have to be reclicked it is just a delay until the pet gets to target.

I send my pet out to kill and destroy without my help all the time. It is wonderful against equipment, and hard to get to foes. All I have to do is if it starts losing health is use troll unguent it gives another generation on health my pet also has better regen health than I do due to the traits. Also use signet of the wild again for regeneration of health.
The ranger has the best range even past longbow range using a pet do not discount them they also protect the ranger very well if your not payin attention lol.

The issue is as ImagoX pointed out. Not all pet skills should require a target to function. Things like aoe condition removal and buffs should trigger instantly at the pets current location. There is no reason why the pet should require a target for these. If you want your pet to use skills at your targets location, there is a F1 button for that. As it stands now, the way pets use their F2 skills is flawed.

Long Bow versus Short Bow -- casual Mists tests

in Ranger

Aethersong.5189

Ranger bow skills definitely do need help. The sad thing was that Anets approach to stop people from auto-attacking with the short bow (even though as you proved that is the best and really only way to deal damage) was to nerf the short bow auto-attack speed. Or should I say “animation fix”… When people asked about this fix, Anet finally came out and said it was a nerf because they don’t like everyone “spamming” the 1 button on the bow. Comments like that make them seem clueless to the ranger profession.

In any case, while I feel like the short bow is in an okay position, the long bow should definitely be taking a look at first. Damaging decreasing at close range does not make much sense when damage at long range isn’t that much to start with.

Edit: Also, I forgot to add. I would also like to see the ranger long bow feel more lively. While the skills it has right now aren’t horrible, I don’t have a particular attachment to any of them. Honestly, the warrior longbow skill bar reminds me more of what rangers were like in Guild Wars 1 than the ranger skill bar.

That being said, I don’t think the DPS of either of the weapons should be decreased. Just the weapons as a whole need to be looked at.

I am also looking forward to the Ranger patch notes. Although, I don’t want to get my hopes to high after the way they treated rangers with the Short Bow “animation fix”.

Some things like I would like to see are:

  • Revert short bow to pre-nerf or at least acknowledge and fix the attack speed problem it has with qz now.
  • Fix pets so they can attack moving targets.
  • Make pets use F2 when they are commanded to.
  • Find a way to make pets more viable in a dungeon and high damage settings like WvW. As they are currently, they get melted way too easily. Perhaps give them some AoE resistance.
  • Fix sword rooting issue so rangers can dodge.
  • Make spirits viable. I would like to see them at least on the same level as warrior banners. Hopefully there is some sort of remake or major fixes in store for this.
  • Improve ranger signets. Many ranger signets suffer from lackluster actives and ridiculous cooldowns. For example, signet of the hunt active right now is horrible. It needs to be looked at. Also, a passive speed boost of 25% could be nice.
  • Increase long bow and great sword weapon damage. These got nerfed hard in the betas and never really recovered. Bringing them back up to par with other professions would be appreciated. Some things I would like looked at include the long bow auto being reliant on range. Also, as it stands now, the ranger rapid fire skill does about the same amount of damage as auto attacking with the short bow.
  • Fix Hall of Monument pet stats. Many of the special pets from the HoM are lacking stats compared to their counterparts. This needs to be looked at.
  • Viability of shouts? Since I started playing ranger, I think I used shouts about once and then never used them again. The only shout that has its uses is “Guard Me”. I would really like shouts to be looked at.

Overall, while I like my ranger, I feel that it is very lacking in many areas including damage and utility compared to other professions. Also, the ranger’s main feature, the pet, has many issues surrounding it. Hopefully these problems will be addressed in the coming patch. I know many people in the ranger community are looking forward to how they handle this.

Ranger Vs Warrior Ranged...

From the research ive seen, the ranger longbow rapid fire does about the same damage as auto-attacking with the short bow not including condition damage…

Let's speculate the 16 bullet points

in Ranger

Posted by: Aethersong.5189

Aethersong.5189

-Spirit effect chance reduced to 15% base.
-Greatsword and longbow damage reduced by 5%
-Pet AI “improved”

Why would the damage ever in a million years be reduced?

Thats what people said about the shortbow…

Anyway, I would like to see some improvements like Vox listed. Making spirits viable and comparable to warrior banners would be great. Having them pasdively follow would also be nice. As for pets, they should be able to hit moving targets. Also, it would be nice to see them not die instantly in dungeons. An increase to most weapon damage would be welcomed.

Long bow in particular needs its auto attack and rapid fire skills looked at. Sword needs to not root players. Short bow would be nice if it was reverted to prenerf… Fix qz functionality with it.

As for signets, their recharges are ridiculous and many effects lackluster. Reduce recharge and buff things like signet of the hunt.

In any case, I hope this update makes some drastic improvements on the ranger.

Long bows arent the best in pvp because of their bad auto attack and slow flighttime but if you want to try, i would recommend bringing qz for sure. qz with rapid shot and barrage is great. Also definitely put 5 points into beastmastery. qz on pet swap is ridiculously strong in pvp. pet swap right before you finish anyone for fast kills. If you do it right, you can kill most people before they have a chance to react. As for piercing arrows, you probably dont need it in pvp unless you are always fighting people clumped together. piercing arrows with point blank shot can be an awesome multitarget knockback if possitioned right. Anyway i apologize for my spelling. on my phone right now.

I am currently living in Japan, but I use my American Credit cards when making purchases online. The issue I’ve run into with Guild Wars 2 is that it is a ridiculous hassle for me to attempt to make gem purchases in the store. It seems that I need to contact support every time I wish to do so.

When attempting to make purchases from locations other than the billing address associated with your credit or debit card, it is highly possible that you will have difficulties completing your purchase without a member of the Payment Review Team reviewing your purchase attempt.

Evidently, I live in a region with “high risk characteristics,” and I was told there is no fix for this. However, I figured I would try asking on the forums if there is any way to remove this blockage from my account. Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

in Ranger

Aethersong.5189

If you played ranger before the nerf, I believe it would be easier to understand the grievances held by many players.

For many players, myself included, short-bow was our primary weapon of use and our go to source of damage. Thus, when Anet nerfs one of rangers primary source of damage with the reasoning of “We don’t want you to spam 1 because it isn’t fun,” there is bound to be some backlash.

I can agree with you to an extent, however. The people saying that rangers are dead and useless are being overly dramatic, but such thoughts stem partly from the less than perfect nature of many of parts of the ranger such as their defining mechanic, the pet. To many, the short-bow was one of the things that was in a good place with ranger, and thus, in addressing the ranger class as a whole, this nerf was a step in the wrong direction.

I apologize, I received rude replies so I replied with rude responses. You can take babies as an insult if you wish but I don’t know how else to compare it. Babies whine and cry when they don’t get what they want right away. That’s exactly how people are acting. It seemed like a fitting analogy.

Before hand we had a ranger, shortbow/axe/warhorn trap condition ranger on our tournament team. His job was to neutralize bunkers with a ally, steal svanir/chieftain and take down the enemy lord. Before the patch him and one other were able to take down bunker guardians very quickly. After the patch he can still take down bunkers very quickly. He can still roam effectively and intercept other roamers and take them 1v1. He can still steal svanir and chieftain. He can still solo all the lord monsters with a 1 defender. I don’t know what else you want me to say? There is little/no difference in his performance and ability to do what is needed in our tpvp team after the patch. Are the numbers smaller? Maybe, but the traps still apply a lot of conditions, shortbow still applies a lot of conditions and he can still solo like the best of us.

I wouldn’t argue that rangers are an incapable class. When I do sPvP, I am often times at top of the team. Also, in tournament settings, I feel like I can contribute. That is not to say this change to the short-bow is unnoticeable for I noticed it and was impacted by it immediately. Both the decrease to damage and conditions is very evident. You talk about your teammate in Pvp, but have you yourself played ranger significantly before and after this change?

I am getting off track, however. The origin of this thread was in regards to the “animation fix”. As I attempted to explain before, this is what I believe is one of the key reasons why this thread has as many posts as it does. When people read about this “animation fix” initially, me included, we were under the impression that this would not have a large impact on game-play. However, in actuality, the short-bow nerf could be felt quite substantially. People thought this was an unintended side effect of the “animation fix,” but we later learned that it was code name for a nerf the devs had performed. Presently a nerf falsely as an “animation fix” did not sit right with many people.

In addition, people are also trying to find out about a nerf to the interactivity between QZ and crossfire. However, even after this many posts, not a single comment in regards to this has been made by a dev. Thus, people are beginning to question if this is yet another intentional nerf.

Reiteration of what improvements the Ranger needs... ASAP

in Ranger

Posted by: Aethersong.5189

Aethersong.5189

I’m not saying I don’t enjoy the ranger or the game, but I can understand where the OP is coming from. I agree that weapons such as the Longbow deserves to be looked at. To me the auto attack feels very weak to other comparable weapons . Then, there are things such as the sword auto-attack rooting issue which needs to be looked at. Beyond that, to me, the great-sword damage feels slightly sub-par. Most likely do to some of the massive nerfs it took in the betas. Increasing the damage slightly I think would help.

There is also the issue of spirits. Their health is insanely low along with their range. In addition, they need to be specced in order to move and trigger more often. Compared to things such as warrior banners, they are not very viable in my eyes.

Furthermore, pets, the defining feature of a ranger, do not function very well in their current state. Lack of f2 responsiveness, pets not being able to hit moving targets, and pets not being able to f2 target after being swapped are just of few of the issues.

There are also many traits which I feel need to be looked at. Evasive Purity is one trait that comes to mind. It used to remove all conditions, which may it very strong, but now it only removes poison and blind. If it were somewhere in the middle I could possibly see myself using it.

Thus, while not necessarily broken, the ranger class has problems. Simply labely threads such as this as qq does not do these threads justice. These threads do serve a purpose; they allow players to express their concerns with the class and state which areas they believed need to be looked at.

The moderators don’t seem to like the numerous problems mentioned inside the 40 millisecond post being mentioned elsewhere. It can make sense to stop posts of the same topic cropping up multiple times, but strictly speaking, the 40 millisecond post was in regards to the “animation fix” while the post on the bug for was about another issue, the QZ bug.

On one hand, I can somewhat understand what the moderators are trying to do, but one the other hand, I am simply frustrated that we aren’t getting a reply from anywhere and censoring the countless people looking for an answer is the opposite of what I want to see happening.

I can’t tell you how many times I have looked at the post count on the 40 millisecond thread and seen it drop because the moderators decided to delete 20~30 posts. I wish instead of posts by concerned customers and players disappearing we could actually get some posts by developers appearing.

Aethersong.5189

Hmmm, well at least we know that the moderators are likely passing this feedback on, since it IS being read.

That being said, let’s try and make this about what the developers can do to make things better.

As an example, I felt that the fast fire rate was a defining part of the Shortbow experience for me. Each shot doesn’t do a whole lot of damage, but if I can get 4 off in the two seconds that a mob isnt chasing me AND proc bleeds on them, I can make a meaningful contribution.

Personally, it seems like slowing down the attack speed just changes the feel of combat. In fact, I’d rather take something like a 7% straight damage nerf and keep the defining speed, rather than trash the speed even if it meant my attack animation got switched with /dance.

So, bring back the speed, and tweak other things if you think we do too much damage. Speed was what made the shortbow fun, and I miss it.

I agree. The fast attack speed of the short-bow was something I quite enjoyed. It doesn’t feel quite the same anymore.

Revert the speed reduction, do a damage nerf if necessary, and rework the other shortbow skills to help encourage use of skills other than “1” in more situations.

Ranger IS a good profession

Aethersong.5189

I don’t think Ranger’s are a bad profession either. I have had rather good luck with them in PvP. I run Shortbow/Greatsword a lot and tried Shortbow/Sword-Dagger with some fairly good success.

I think the main reason people are complaining is that, for one, as the previous poster stated, the devs seemed to have nerfed the short-bow in an underhanded fashion. In addition, this nerf is done without any compensation to the weapon. Furthermore, there are many issues with the weapons and mechanics rangers currently have which should be addressed before “animation fixes” aka nerfs.

For example, when using the sword today, I did have fun, but the rooting problem was ridiculously annoying. It became especially apparent if I tried to down an opponent and instead just kept attacking. Beyond that, sometimes with the sword I would jump away from targets while trying to use my auto-attack. An issue almost opposite to the rooting one.

Other things people have raised concerns about are pet responsiveness and spirits.

No idea how this was changed from pet heal all the time on any ground to “you have to be in the correct CPR position”

I think the slope issue may be the same problem I have encountered. Not 100% sure, but I run into the problem of my pet not being able to res me more frequently than I would like to.

Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

Let me start by stating that I have spent thousands of hours of time playing the first Guild Wars, so I am not a new customer by any means. But, I am sorry. I am not very pleased with the way Anet has handled this issue. The fact they tried to present this nerf as an “animation fix” in the patch notes just leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I have not seen one single person who had an animation problem with the short-bow. I personally played my ranger for nearly 300 hours and never noticed a problem. Which leads me to ask, why is a nerf like this being prioritized or the countless problems that rangers currently face and why were we lied to?

Lying to your customers, and then coming out later and stating that it was actually a nerf is very, very bad form. And your reasoning behind this? People were usually their auto-attack too much. Let me write that down again. People were using their AUTO-ATTACK too much.

Jon, this is a horrible, horrible reason for making such a nerf. If you saw a problem with the attack speed of the short-bow, I could be understanding. Let me qualify that, however, I could be understanding if you examined the short-bow as a whole before jumping straight to nerfing it. People used the “1” skill on the short-bow so much because it is the primary damage source of the weapon. As has been stated countless times, the others skills of the weapon are situation. I hope to assume you knew this, yet it frightens me at the same time because even so you went ahead with this nerf.

Another thing I would like to comment is that stating that the damage decrease was simply 7% is wrong, because as I hope you know, much of the damage from the short-bow comes from bleeding stacks which also got affected. This is not to mention the quickness problems people are experiencing.

I hope a rework to the other skills of the short-bow is coming out soon to compensate as well as better fit your ideal vision of what the weapon should be. Also, I hope to see you again soon in this thread to tell us of the progress of these improvements are to this weapon (and hopefully to other ranger weapons, as well).

The shortbow definitely could use improvements if this nerf is staying. The decrease to the number of attacks means it is impossible to keep up as many bleeding stacks. This really hurts Ranger’s condition damage capability. Nerfing this ability and stating that it was because Rangers were using their auto-attack too much does not make much sense to me. Isn’t that what one is supposed to do?

Although, I do agree that the shortbow (along with the greatsword, sword, and longbow) definitely should be looked at for improving. The way it was before, the shortbow was the only ranged weapon of the Ranger I ended up using because it was the only one that seemed to deal decent damage. It is a little disheartening that the Ranger, my favorite class from the first Guild Wars, seems quite underwhelming in this game.

For the shortbow, the auto-attack was the only skill that dealt decent damage. The other skills were about positioning and disruption. I did, and I am sure nearly all other Rangers as well, made use of the other shortbow skills, but these were simply for those stated purposes. As for the poison volley, it’s damage is lacking and only useful if it hits a target with all shots (means one must be point blank). The quick shot is good for retreating. Crippling shot can be nice although the condition durations are a little short. Useful when combined with quick shot. The concussion shot is good.

In conclusion, if you look at the short bow kit, it seems like crossfire was the only skill added with damage in mind. If you decide to nerf the only damage skill on this weapon, please buff it in other areas to compensate.

[Also, on a side note, can Rangers other weapons be looked at. Great sword damage is subpar. Sword has issues with its auto attack. And the long bow damage is horrible once anything moves out of max range. I am just sad to see the ranger neglected like this Compare most ranger weapons to nearly any other class and they seem simply out classed.]

I noticed it immediately. Definitely longer than 40 ms. Thanks for the “animation fix,” or whatever the patch was suppose to have done :/

I have had issues with my downed state number 3 skill not causing my pet to resurrect me. My pet sometimes just runs over to me and stands there doing nothing… Very annoying when I want my pet to, you know, actually res me like it should.

Have you gotten an Exotic drop yet?

I’ve played for 350+ hours. I think I have gotten one exotic in total, and it was for map completion. I have never gotten one as a drop. I usually feel lucky if I even get a rare drop. Although, usually my luck isn’t that good. Last time I killed Claw of Jormag I got four blues and two greens. Yay…
