That being said, however, imagine if McDonalds was ignoring thousands of complaints of the food tasting too salty from their customers. Or if Ford was ignoring thousands of complaints about their seats being too uncomfortable during long drives. And that those companies exhibited a pattern of ignoring customer complaints for a year and a half. Burger King and Chevy would be delighted.

Fixed that for you.

So, I’ve considered posting this for a couple days now. I tend to lurk rather than posting. I realize this will likely fall on deaf ears, but after this weekend, I feel like it really needs to be said.

Been like this since the start really. In fact it’s like this in a lot of other gaming development forums too. It really doesn’t matter what game or how good it is, there is always a very vocal group of negativity pushers.

The mechanic to encourage better build diversity already exists within guild wars 2.

It’s called retaliation.

However during beta, bosses that reflected damage utterly destroyed hundreds of players. And since then it’s been very rare to see a boss with Retaliation or Damage reflection up.

I think Alice is a good example of what I was talking about.

And right now, leveling is a bit more taxing on newer players and I’m having a hard time keeping one of my friends motivated to play the game. When a player levels up, they like to feel rewarded and a little bit stronger, otherwise it starts to feel like the first few levels are pointless.

I can understand their goal with traits, but I don’t think they should have made 30 the starting point.

I don’t see your point, I mean what are you actually expecting of them here? To make the game cripplingly easy for someone who cannot teach themselves?

Personally I think I offered the best advice I could. I advised him to learn how to learn and to accept his failures as a step toward learning. And the little dark souls joke at the end, was meant in this same sense.

I’m not sure what else you can do for someone who isn’t willing to learn how to learn themselves. Hold there hand through everything I guess… But then what happens when you take that away? This happens…

Feedback:

Anet nerfed my characters into the dirt today by taking away almost all Traits my characters had earned. I am not a good enough Player to reach level 80. That’s right, I am not good enough at this game… but I love parts of GW2 enough that I had kept the game installed so I could return one day.

Well you did pick the hardest class to play, so I can see why some people might struggle with elementalist. Perhaps reroll warrior, I assure you, you won’t have half the problems you are having and can do most content asleep.

Well today I log in and my highest character, lvl 51 ELE has four traits out of the over 15 he used to have. FOUR. I was having a hard enough time as it is.

Well I see your problem… See most gamers learn during their time as a gamer, to test out mechanics with trial and error. Most people would have immediately spent those 4 traits and noticed that they are the equivalent of 5 previous trait points. I suspect you’ll have an easier time as a gamer if you learn to learn through trial and error. Yes, you’ll fail a lot at what you’re trying to accomplish, but each of those fails is one step closer to a success and understanding.

Anet doesn’t want People like me playing their MMO. Anet must want the Players that can breeze through leveling content to 80, which I admit I have had a hard time doing. Without those traits, and the benefits I each of my characters got from them, the game is now beyond my abilities. These changes were great for the gazillion lvl 80s, but not good for Players that have a hard time with this game. Anet decided whom their preferred customers are and I am not on the list.

Oh I assure you, they do… See once upon a time in ye olde beta. Things were actually hard, events actually scaled to the number of players present. And mobs were not the simple push overs they are now. But Arenanet realized that this would impact their lowest common denominator to heavily. And since, theoretically that is the largest player base. They heavily nerfed everything and consistently continued to nerf things like dungeons and bosses through out GW2’s life.

This gives the implication that infact Arenanet mostly want players like you.

I am not rage quitting, I just realize I don’t belong here and there is no sense in holding out hope I might play GW2 again.

Feedback Given. Resigned from Guild. All Characters deleted. Game Uninstalled

A shame, may I instead suggest a game more suited to your skill level.

Enjoy.

I really don’t know what we can do, aside from the warning we already give, and (I believe) requiring that you input the character name a second time as confirmation that “Yes, I really want to do this.”

I’m pondering the next step: “Are you really really sure? Please signify by [insert some action here.” At some point, after giving warning and making it clear what is involved in the deletion of a character, we need to allow that process to happen. Putting too many hurdles to accomplishing a desired function can make the process irritating and non-user-friendly, after all.

I do want to say that I am sorry that you deleted in error and lost items.

There is one thing you could of course do…

Force it so that a player has to sell or destroy everything the character holds before it can be deleted.

Inquest knew about Mordremoth. Scarlet was part of the Inquest. Scarlet also partook in some dragon energy experiments (Thaumanova). Ergo, Scarlet knew of Mordremoth via the Inquest.

Why is this not a simpler deduction than “Mordremoth was always in Scarlet’s mind!” exactly?

Because she stepped out of the device before joining the inquest.

For example. Could we have had more character development on Scarlets part? Sure. But ask yourself how would that have been implemented? Cutscenes? Well you know video games are an interactive medium, cutscenes by there nature are none interactive, meaning that we already have a conflict. In a movie it’s perfectly fine for 2 characters to stand and talk to each other for 15 minutes, depending on the genre most of the movie can just be people talking. However again, ask yourself how this would translate? Do you want to stand around listening to people talk and talk and talk? No, this is a game, you play games. In a book you can easily spend an entire page or two describing something, however that same effort becomes significantly more difficult because unlike words video game assets are more difficult to produce and manipulate.

I see a lot of complaining about things that were done wrong but not enough realisation, or thought as to how it could be practically done differently. And the key here is practically.

It really isn’t hard to portray such story without cutscenes. They’ve done it before in guild wars 1. The bonus mission pack allowed you to take control of iconic heroes of guild wars 1 during a pinnacle lore moment.

They could have given us a brief view of scarlet’s rise to power each patch while keeping her indentity secret by having the player act out her forming each alliance. Not only would it have gotten the player invested in Scarlet but it would have given them a perfect venue to hint and tease at further content. Which would have kept players looking forward.

This is how you tell a story within a game, they should know this… THEY’VE DONE IT BEFORE.

The problem with season one is it lacks imagination. It’s rushed and shallow and destroys almost everything it worked up to right at the end. To make way for a new entirely unknown antagonist to take its place.

Welcome to the nature of the beast in mmos. What about the next features patch? Will you want another swap then? Is this yoing to come up every time they decide to tweak something? Wha about a balance patch? Should a class get an armor refund if a spec becomes unuseable?

Mordremoth may have a better understanding of plants – but sylvari are unique even for plants, and both Zhaitan and Kralkatorrik are shown capable of corrupting plants – Kralkatorrik with relative ease (as much ease as flesh and soil). So even if Mordremoth has an easier time corrupting plants, that doesn’t mean the sylvari are tied to it.

Ultimately Scarlet stepped into the device and was corrupted by Mordremoth because of something within her mind that she took in with her. Implying a base connection between Mordremoth and the Sylvari.
You’ll forgive me I hope if I cannot be bothered to sit here debating the correct semantics for usage of the word link.

Question about KasJory Romance [Spoiler-ish]

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Alice.8694

Alice.8694

Why didn’t anyone in the Living Story (Marjory’s sister, the PC, D.E. 2, other chars et cetera) find it surprising or unusual?

The kingdom of Kryta is vaguely similar to late Rennaissance or early Industrial Age Europe (with elements from other cultures like China); sure, lesbians weren’t be heavily persecuted in that period but homosexuality still wasn’t completely socially acceptable either…

And the only thing Marjory’s sis cares about is that Kasmeer’s a noble? It doesn’t make sense! People cared about heirs a lot back then; women were supposed to mother children. Besides, Christianity (which generally prefers you to stay straight or at least make babies) was highly important back then, and given what we know about Krytans, GW2 humans too are quite religious.

I understand LGBT not being a problem in futuristic settings like Mass Effect when people have learned to be tolerant and have likely developed cloning technology to make the main difference between homosexuality and heterosexuality redundant. I would understand socially acceptable gay and lesbian relationships among the asura (for the same reasons), the sylvari (self-explanatory), the charr (they’re vaguely Greco-Roman, and we all know how they loved homosexuality), the norn (ditto, they are Vikings/Native Americans and neither really looked down at gays)… but the Rennaissance/Industrial, European humans? How is it possible for homosexuality to be completely normal in such a setting? Yes, GW2 is a fantasy, but it is still somewhat… jarring.

I’m not saying ANet shouldn’t have tried to add some lesbian romance between humans. What I’m trying to say is that they should not have made their relationship completely normal. Let them be persecuted, if only a bit; naturally, they wouldn’t care about what others would think of them and, ta-dah, love would triumph! Realism aside, this would make their love story way more interesting and deep.

Most homophobia in European history stems from the spread and dominance of a certain group of religions within the area. Tyria lacks this cultural history and therefore what you are suggesting would be out of place and forced.

Belinda doesn’t really need to have any real involvement in the plot for Marjory to get involved at this point. Even though Marjory and Kasmeer originally came involved with Scarlet due to the investigations at Dragon Bash, I’m pretty sure she feels some sort of bond with the rest of Destiny’s Edge 2.0 that she would go with them for shenanigans.

Heck aren’t we just in it for the shenanigans?

NPC recruiter: “Random Moles are attacking villages, you in?”
Protagonist: “I don’t know if I can fit you in between slaughtering zombies and spamming cannons at Zhaitan.”
NPC recruiter: “They’ll be shenanigans”
Protagonist: “Tell Trahearne he can fire his own cannons!”

Now, let’s assume it is. I personally can’t understand the mentality of those people, who comment negativly in every single GW2 thread, bashing the people who want more, supporting the ones who want to leave. What, since 2, 3 months? Seriously, the mentality of an individual who enters a gaming forum to tell the players to leave, coming everyday to a game he hates, just to make others hate it with hin. It is like we are in those creepy movies with alot of sick people with messed up minds, which is exactly what we have here. Sorry if you get offended my dear hater, you obviously can hate the game cause there is no rule saying everyone should like it, but staying in a gaming forum for months, living another day just to hate in another thread, is insane.

To be fair, there are enough people coming to this forum because they actually care. Although i agree with you that GW2 won’t die i ask myself in which direction this game is going. Especially after all that “push 1 and zerg” events lately.

I think the problem lies in a lack of a unified vision. There was one when designing the base game but now it’s out the content seems to be extremely inconsistent. This is probably caused by having modular content teams taking turns each release due to the time constraints imposed by a 2 week turnaround.

Indeed there is no one quality level. As far as i know Anet stated a while ago that every content team has minimum 4 weeks for their stuff, so i think the problem is somewhere else.

Perhaps you misunderstood what I meant… In order for content to come out every two weeks… With a 4 week development time. You’d would need two teams working tag team for each update.

Scarlet as a Lieutenant? [spoilers]

Alice.8694

Y’know, the aftermath dialogue kind of hints that Scarlet was not corrupted.

In the instance, it’s talked about Scarlet redirecting the ley lines to multiple dragons. Not just one.

So it may be that she was out to empower multiple dragons – perhaps for the same reason she let Thaumanova blow up. She wanted to watch what happened, and learn from it.

To quote the wiki page on Mordremoth:

“The sylvari spent many years travelling the world, studying the engineering secrets of each of the races. Eventually her travels brought her to Rata Sum, where Headmaster Omadd of the College of Synergetics offered her to “see into the Eternal Alchemy itself”. Ceara, unable to resist the opportunity, agreed to the experiment, entering an isolation tank, the purpose of which was ostensibly to shut down the mind’s security system and open it—like opening a door—to welcome in the truths of the Eternal Alchemy. In practice, this exposed her directly to Mordremoth’s influence, and broke her mind."

I’m not leaving but these days I have a hard time staying online more than half an hour.
My main grief as I call it is ANet’s law of silence. I remember the days before launch when ANet needed a player base, there was a multitude of articles, blogs, pictures and videos.

Yup and then players took everything written there as gospel and started demanding that they adhere to their demands.

This is why we cannot have nice things.

You can’t place all the blame on the players, when there were many things stated, then Anet later did the complete opposite. I think account-bound to character-bound dyes is one of the best examples of this. Other changes in design have had very split opinions among players, but account-based dyes was a popular idea that I think most liked.

I certainly can and I will… You cannot have an open development discussion with players if your ideas are going to be interpreted by the players as ABSOLUTELY SET IN STONE. Not to mention all the people who had no interest in GW2’s future and instead used these buzz topics to try and create negativity around the game.

The very nature of game development means that what you planned won’t always turn out exactly how you intended it to be. Arenanet’s dev blog was full of romanticizing language and when making a game your ideas either translate or they do not.

While Arenanet tried being open about their development thought process, players ultimately pushed it too far. Now I imagine when ever they want to discuss up and coming ideas, their PR department is silently shaking its head. Because players cannot handle ideas, they just want to know what they are getting and when. And that’s all that Arenanet tell us any more really.

As for the dyes, they’ve given their reasoning why that was changed. You might not like it, but they’ve given it. Players would like a lot of things, just because they like something doesn’t mean giving them it would be good for the game as a whole.

Why would Mordremoth need Omadd to go into the chamber? If the chamber is the reason, then Mordy needs to talk to someone about making a whole bunch of these chambers.

Good question actually…

As i just posted in another thread… Either Scarlet accidentally branded herself or she lost it when she discovered a link between Sylvari and Mordremoth that the pale tree was covering up. This could have been an opening for the sleeping mordremoth to assert his will. Mordremoth likely would find no use for the device on it’s own. What he needed was a weak sylvari that knew a hint of the truth.

The Pact justification

in Lore

Posted by: Alice.8694

Alice.8694

To say the Pact should go deal with non-dragon local threats such as Scarlet is to say the Fallen Angels (a unit of the Seraph sent to Ebonhawke) should be fighting the centaurs because if DR falls to centaurs it’s all pointless. Fighting centaurs isn’t their job, it isn’t their duty. They’re there to protect Ebonhawke.

Are you arguing that if the centaurs had a massive force inside Divinity’s Reach and a good chunk of the population of the city was killed and the buildings destroyed, it would make sense for the Fallen Angels to prioritise Ebonhawke over Divinity’s Reach? If there was a choice between Ebonhawke and Divinity’s Reach, it makes sense to choose the former? What happens to Ebonhawke if Divinity’s Reach falls? Where will they get their supplies and reinforcements? How are they going to handle the influx of refugees?.

Sure but now you are trying to compare a unit of an army of a nation and it’s placements regarding that nation. To a neutral city of pirates and an army comprised of units from 8 different groups with a singular vision. These are not in any way comparable circumstances. The pact is not lion’s arch’s army.

This really is quite silly… I mean the reasoning behind the pact’s absence is pretty much sound. They wouldn’t intervene, it’s not their mission to go around waging war on every petty villain that arises. To them, they have bigger birds to fry and the death of the dragons is their sole mission and vision.

The fact that scarlet was planning to raise a dragon was guessed by players but not by their characters. This was meta knowledge outside the game and you cannot impose that upon the actions of your character.

As I have said before, I’ll say it again. The pact is not your personal army to point at a location and raze it. The story would cease to be believable if it were.

Theres an entire island of undead that cannot just sit there, not to mention 5 dragons off on their own little missions of world domination. The pact has a daunting job and it’s hands are way too full for excursions into vigilante justice.

If Mordremoth has the power of plants, then it makes sense that Sylvari are in someway inexplicably linked to his power simply by their very nature as a plant. They are plants, he has dominion over plants.

Omadd is not a plant… Mordremoth is not an asura based dragon. God knows what that would look like.

I’m sorry but that is a silly assumption. Jormag is the dragon of ice but not all ice related creatures fall into its base control or are even linked to it. From what I have seen in game dragons don’t care what they are corrupting as long as they can corrupt it, Sylvari being immune to those known corruptions.

I’m curious if you have examples of ice related creatures that are not under control of Jormag? It is not a silly assumption that a master of something would be able to more easily corrupt things of the same nature as its specialty.

If you understand the inner workings of plants and have done for millenia then you’re gonna have a shorter route to controlling them should you wish to.

End of the day, the pact is not your personal army to point and raze this area in particular. It was a hard enough alliance to forge and even then it’s likely made with clauses like “The army cannot be fielded for the benefits of any one nation” which this would have been.

Secondly, most of scarlet’s strategy was “Field something deadly, use the chaos to test something else, don’t care when it all falls apart”. To the pact and most of the world, scarlet might have seemed dangerous but she also kept losing. Her queen’s Jubilee invasion foiled, The nightmare tower was destroyed, and the marionette reduced to pieces. These are not the actions of an immediate threat worthy of breaking one of the pacts founding clauses.

Something I’ve learned in the realm of science is to be immediately skeptical of anything that says “simulation” or “model”. A model or simulation is, ultimately, an arbitrary construct that produces a result that it was specifically tailored to produce. A mathematical formula for any circumstance. This is usually done using a set of factors, some scientifically determined, some merely invented, and some to be tested by that very calculation.

If you see fault in their work, I whole heartedly encourage you to submit a peer-review of their work so that they may further refine and improve on it. That is the beauty of science after all. It adjusts and corrects itself not based on opinions but on what is demonstrated and observed. Be it with direct observations or with repeatable and demonstrable predictions with a mathematic model.

Your personal opinion on math within science however, is fundamentally meaningless to the findings presented.

As unfair as that might seem. And if she really, truly was not acting of her own volition for the most part (I don’t believe it), then that’s a moral conundrum that, hopefully, they’ll actually have the stones to write in for our PCs.

And that’s all I am trying to advocate here… Some three dimensional writing.
Even if scarlet is Ceara One, the very question remains unanswered. And that uncertainty alone can breed plot.

Scarlet’s dead, that boat has sailed… With the idea of saving her I just wanted to really highlight how much wasted opportunity there was for depth here.

Going forward, I hope they put more emphasis on narrative depth.

Did she not killed thousands of women and children? She did deserve a violent end.

Indirectly? I am not sure of figures due to the actual things she did being vague and gamey.
Directly? No.

Did we, the heroes, not killed hundreds of criminals? Why would we give her mercy?

Scarlet does not behave at all like and is not very comparable to a real mentally ill person. I’m not sure if she was written that way intentionally, or if it’s due to a lack of depth in the writing. I suspect the latter.

I agree.

Scarlet very much acts like she knows right from wrong.

So I pose this question to you…
Two alternative worlds…
Ceara One, willingly chooses to become scarlet and go on a murderous rampage.
Ceara Two, has her agency overruled by Mordremoth who causes her to become scarlet and go on a murderous rampage.

From our limited view of the situation, how would we know the difference? And in a magical world such as Tyria where coming into unknown and unstable elements has a habit of turning out bad for the person involved. Why would our heroes assume one over two, more so after reading the diary?

Alice, I notice that you apply pathos to your argument of “saving” and quite a bit of the ethos of our characters (and heroic NPCs), while forgetting something very, very important that I feel needs repetition:
Scarlet did not want to be saved. Scarlet is Scarlet, and what she did, didn’t do or would have done, would have all been her.

Firstly I feel you need to realise this was just a suggestion of how the writers could have brought depth to the story, nothing more.

Secondly most mentally ill patients do not want saving, partly due to their mental illness rejecting the help of the people trying to help them as hostile. So are you advocating we kill mentally ill patients because they won’t embrace help? Even mass murderers who are found insane aren’t sentenced as murderers, they are taken to a place that can hopefully help them and their sentencing is postponed until it can be determined if it is right to hold them responsible for their actions during their insanity.

I just can’t believe a female asura would seriously choose to be bald…..

Why not? They’re basically furrless rabbitmoles.

I think you are falling into the same fallacy as Bullyrook at the end. And you were doing so well. Homosexuality doesn’t need to serve individuals as long as it serves the survival of the species.

No I’m not. I just said that the idea that homosexuality doesn’t serve a purpose, is wrong. You may have read my post wrong.

Like I said, we are a social species. There is more to us than just procreation. We survive not just as individuals, but as a culture.

You’re still doing it…

Or do you think homosexuality arose only once humans walked the earth to impose meaning onto evolution? Homosexuality doesn’t need a modern purpose to exist and be a natural part of humanity, which it is. How we as a social species adapt to the cards that are dealt to us, does not imply the cards were dealt that way for the reasoning we’ve chosen to give them.

But the real fallacy here is not just a misunderstanding of evolutionary theory, but of the assumption that homosexuality is counter productive. Counter productive to what exactly? To procreation? How did you conclude that procreation is all that matters among a social species? And how did you conclude that homosexuality is against procreation? Do same-sex couples not foster children? Do they not form pairs, and parent children?

I think you are falling into the same fallacy as Bullyrook at the end. And you were doing so well. Homosexuality doesn’t need to serve individuals as long as it serves the survival of the species.

Quoting the study I linked above: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2012-12/nifm-sfe120612.php
“The study solves the evolutionary riddle of homosexuality, finding that “sexually antagonistic” epi-marks, which normally protect parents from natural variation in sex hormone levels during fetal development, sometimes carryover across generations and cause homosexuality in opposite-sex offspring. The mathematical modeling demonstrates that genes coding for these epi-marks can easily spread in the population because they always increase the fitness of the parent but only rarely escape erasure and reduce fitness in offspring."

She is a monster that killed thousands of women and children, and threatens thousands more by waking up an Elder Dragon. No jury is needed and we are the judge. This sword is for monsters.

Fine fine, I get it, since you all clearly just want to revel in ‘justified’ violence while also constantly complaining elsewhere that the story is “not good enough”.
