1: I think Mesmer mobility isn’t bad at all, you just have to spec for it. With a focus and runes of air you can easily get 99% swiftness uptime, when traited phase retreat (600 range teleport away from target + clone) has only a 6 second cooldown, blink (900 range teleport) has only a 30/24 cooldown.
Both Mesmer and Thief rely on active defense/evasion more than other professions in my oppinion, so thy both have a high skill cap. I have only played my thief for like 10 hours in spvp so i can’t really go into details with that. I think the playstyle is pretty much alike: jump in, do burst damage when its safe, jump out, burst again etc.
2: when you find yourself in a zerg as a mesmer, but you’re still traited for roaming, you can easily swap utilities to glamours and get support skills: projectile reflection, aoe boon/condition removal and portal.
Greatsword deals pretty decent damage to zergs now because the auto attack cleaves, so you can carry one of those with you just in case.
And i guess thieves have venomshare and stealth reviving :p.

I think OH sword is akittenng for blocking a thief’s backstab and counter attacking, with high offense and a shatter build it usually means instant down for glasscannon thieves. But i still prefer the focus for the swiftness and the aoe pull. The Iwarden hits pretty hard aswell, IF it hits. I have a roaming video using the focus in my signature if you’re interested.
TL;DR: sword is higher damage, focus is more utility
