One or more players overwhelm you and defeat is inescapable. Would you:
a) Rather delay death by entering the downed state?
b) Die and sooner re-spawn?
The only time defeat is inescapable is when i kitten up something ^^. Defeat is never inescapable with proper cooldown management and planning…. unless 3 thieves backstab you at exactly the same time and you had no idea they were there :’(.
Im going with A simple because i love downed states in games, from an emotional and aestethic way (some games really mess the downed system up :o).
Also, if defeat is inescapable, like when im surrounded by like 20 enemies across a 5000 range (so theres no way im blinking and stealthing out of there) then it probably wouldnt last long for them to swallow me anyway.
i stand still → 1 second later im downed → 1 second of invulnerablity → 2 seconds later dead ;D
The only time i get swallowed is when i somehow spam skills and have nothing left though, and i dont have that much passive defense so the dying part goes quite quickly :P. Spamming skills and not having anything left is a mistake on my part, and dying is kind of like an experience where you look back at mistakes, and improving somehow is always fun to me. I never want to respawn as quickly as possible because i have to reflect for atleast 5 seconds, so respawning faster isnt really a reason to skip downed.
Im going with A, because theres nothing more embarassing and screaming “you kittened up somewhere, dont do it again”, than seeing your character be swallowed by a zerg of hungry kittens.
Two contingencies square-off and you are soon plummeted into downed state. Would you:
a) Prefer an ally immediately rehabilitate you?
b) Linger there for awhile until someone is able to rejuvenate you?
c) Just die?
English isnt my main langauge and i have no idea what the difference between rehabilitate and rejuvenate is
. But ill keep it simple, when im with people whom i know are good players, i know theyll notice me going down and theres a chance that theyre going to be able to revive me, and that chance is huge in an organised team where people immediatally throw aoe control effects on you to push foes away.
In a wvw zerg theres always a chance to be revived if people are near you, ofcourse, you cant control them and they may just run by you.
Ill just go with A or B, whatever they mean.
TL;DR: the downed system adds a LOT of depth, there are alot of ways you can deal with downed allies or enemies. The only complexity, which i very much appreciate, is having to manage and save your cooldowns to PREPARE for downed enemies or allies. It just changes the way you use and manage your skills.
P.S. i forgot to mention when an ally goes down, theres different things to do aswell, ill mention 1 strategy i commonly use in an organised team: As im wearing mostly berserkers (berserker amulet in Spvp), im very bad at reviving, i often rely compeltely on active defense, and i cant use any of them while reviving. Sometimes i let the team’s bunker revive, but when i see an enemy approaching i can immobilize them
. just to prevent damage from my team ^^.

Im probably going with A, but it completely depends. the average person you meet in wvw roaming or spvp hotjoin are too much of a kitten to evne notice their ally to go down, so most of the time you can just kite around the downed untill they die. But when 1 goes down and the other actually notices and attempts to revive, its a matter of how much you prepared for dealing with it, and if you have the right skills available to do so.
As a mesmer i have 5 options to stop reviving/finish uninterupted.
1. distortion finish, very high cooldown and i may need it somewhere else in the fight
2. temporal curtain or diversion, For interupting the reviver when they can revive faster than my finisher finishes (like when they immediatally revive when they go down)
3. stealth, its probably on cooldown due to using it alot in the normal fight, and im still vulnerable to aoe interupts, but with teh right opposing professions its an option
4. chaos storm, i put a chaos storm on the downed and finish, so i block stuff and the reviver gets dazed, when he deos get dazed, he cant finish reviving even when mashing F as soona s the person goes down.
5. burst, i just burst the reviver if they are low enough health to scare them off or to down them too.
Basically when i fight multiple players, and one is about to go down or my burst recharged, i actually look if i have skills available to deal with him when hes downed, becuase downing them only to get them back up is a waste of my burst
. Sometimes i get them both to low health and just try to down them at the same time, or keep them low untill cooldowns recharge.
Also, soloing 3 players without downed would be Way too easy. I can literally wear full berserkers (in wvw, in spvp it would be slightly harder), and just insta gib one of them, then just wait for cooldowns to recharge. a full burst has abouts 66% of the damage on a zero reaction time, which means its as fast as i press buttons, and while im pressing buttons im also probably stealthed. the other 34% damage has like a 2 second reaction time, at this point the person can or can not be aware im there, but if they arent its likely to hit teh full 2 seconds. In wvw the first 66% is sometimes enough to instagib someone

the 1vs3 would look like this: i jump in, kill someone, i jump out. 10 seconds later (im still 100%hp) i jump in again and kill the second. 10 seconds later i kill the last. its that easy (Assuming theyre not wearing full sentinels or something xD)
with teh downed system you cant jump away, because theyll be revived (assuming their team isnt full of kittens), you have to prepare for the situation with downed and up enemies and make sure you can handle it.
What would you deem more fun – considering all mindsets:
a)Downing two players solo but dying to a third; rallying the aforementioned downed players?
b)The same scenario minus the downed mechanic?
Well, when im roaming theyll revive them even though theyre defeated, it doesnt really change much in a gameplay perspective. I dont really have an oppinion on this one because both choices dont really mean anything for me :/.
I guess it would be cool if the legendary assesories will give auras or trials to weapons or something… i cant think of any other way to make assesories affect your look O.o
Most old builds are still viable, just remove the 5 illusions points (if the build has them) and put them somewhere else ^^
Taking “damage” from clones while not being able to hit the mesmer for 3 seconds is by no means overpowered.
There are counters to a mesmer using stealth, block for3 seconds or wahtever, when your block ends he comesout fo stealth and you can dodge his opener. Or you can just move far enough away so he cant open out of stealth… lots of counters imo.
Well, tourney teams require strategy and team synergy. Pugging is never a good idea, unless you run into another pug. If youre pugging and run into a good premadeyoull get facerolled, definitely.
Why dont you like hot join? its almost the same as tourneys except its easier and doesnt require strategy!
Personal score also means nothing in tourneys, you could be very helpfull to the team but have lowest score.

You made weakness “take 1 extra damage the next tiem you take damage”,but maybe you should call it vulnerability as in the real game?
-I think the trait points would make it too complicated though.
-dont forget stun breakers and other instant skills
-heres an idea for the downed state: downed characters have 3 health, they have to reach 6 health to recover from downed. A downed character can heal 1 per turn (instead of attacking), but when they take damage, heal goes on 2 turns cooldown, if they dont take damage they continue healing. An allied character can heal a downed 2 per turn in melee range. I also think the basic ranged attack should have a shorter range (but im not sure how big the whole field is)
When going down, characters gain 1 downed penalty. Each point of downed penalty decreases health the next time they go down by 1(must have atleast 1 downed hp), and decreases health the next time they recover by 25%(base is 75%, must be atleast 1 hp), decreases maximum health by 20%, can only get a max of 3 downed penalty and it doesn’t recover in any way.
example: my character has 10hp and just goes down for the first time, she has 3 downed hp, but in my turn another character can immediatally revive and she bandages herself, she recovers with 5hp, her maximum hp is 8 (can reach this through healing skills). If she goes down again shell have 2 downed hp, still needs 6 to recover, recovers with 2 hp, has a maximum of 6 hp, etc!
Maybe recovering with 2 hp is a bit harsh… An alternative would be, recover with 50%, but gain X turns of bleeding(condition) based on downed penalty. I think the maximum health decrease is balanced though.
-I do have a random idea for the traits though, every character can get 30 in a certain tree and get a signature trait (the one that most people use that tree for). Like elementalists in arcana will get evasive arcana, Mesmers in duelling will get clone on dodge, mesmers in inspiration can get feedback on res, thieves in shadow arts will remove conditions in stealth etc. It would still allow choices (5 per profession) without making it super complicated
. Or maybe make the 30 points alreayd allocated per character, but give the player some choices which trait to actually choose :o. like your character “messmeress” whom has 30 inspiration, The player would be able to choose between “remove conditions when shattering”,“phantasms have 1 more health”,“feedback for 1 turn when reviving”
-Maybe change some conditions and boons to be abit more like in game? Vigor “next tactical dodge doesnt discard a card”, Poisoned “for the duration all healing is halved, always rounded down and must be atleast 1”, bleeding “does damage
”weakness “attacks do only half damage and dodges discared 2 cards”,quickness “can use 2 skills per turn”
Ok, so i never really played trading card games, except for those times where my friends basically forced me to, so my advice may be complete garbage xD. But i hope this helps anyway!

Its not quite absolete, having your illusion skills on a 125% cooldown is rather big, btu still playable.

Here it is, It has defence through stealth and condition damage with confusion from shatters, scepter and conditions from staff and clones.
I try to shatter all scepter clones for some confusion.
Normally i only shatter, but i just wanted to try out new builds with this patch for fun ^^.

mhmm, that would be nice. But i dont think arenanet agrees with us having 3 master traits :/. Ive seen some good builds trying to use the new interupt conditions already.

Yea it looks amazing indeed :P. How big is this reflective bubble? Ive only tested in solo pvp so far. It would be interesting to see it protect everyone for up to 12 seconds :O
Mimic is amazing in PvP, if you can time it right. I’d give it a situational 3/5 at least, although 1/5 makes more sense in PvE. (So an average of 2/5? Still seems sort of low.)
This is a really ambitious project!
Now i come to think of it, i did manage to use mimic in a duel with an engi to deadly effectiveness, but in hot join pvp i never really used it. Its a 4 second reflect on a very low cooldown, its also pretty small unlike feedback so people will keep attacking most of the time, they probably dont even know what mimic is ;D.
But then again, not everything are projectiles, and i could still be hit by blowtorches and dangerous things like that :/. I feel like portal or nullfield prevents more damage than mimic could have.

I didnt know sigil of air gave swiftness :O. I always found it really underwhelming because sigil of fire seems to do the same damage and its aoe.
Maybe youre talking about the runes of air? Its one of my personal favourite for the swiftness, but lately ive been trying might duration runes for condition builds aswell ^^.
edit: Might duration runes are fire, strength, hoelbrak and stuff. They work in direct damage builds too to give the staff some more punch, but im not sure if its worth the loss of runes of air yet. Definitely more sustained damage against people who know how to avoid shatters. (its in pvp ofcourse)
If chaos storm was turned in a damage skill isntead of a hindering defensive skill as it is now, I would QQ xD. just saying :P.
I do agree that condition mesmerscould use more aoe, but please dont take away my chaos storm!

I made all the important stuff bold, incase you dont have time to read all explanations.
I’ll give the sword main hand skills 5/5, the leap is just my favourite skill ever, most shatters use it somehow and theres so much room for creativity, i would give leap a 6/5 if i could!
All staff skills can get a 5/5 too, but i would even give phase retreat a 6/5 :O! Amazing mobility and defense, in certain builds even support! I love how gracefull and agile the staff makes me feel, and chaos storm, i just like the looks of it sooo much ^__^
I dont like the greatsword, all it does is damage :/
Ill give it a 3/5, i only use it if all a certain pve event requires is damage, in pvp and other places i avoid it. It doesnt allow creativity, the whole weapon jsut seems focussed around damage, its not what i like so much about mesmer.
scepter, meh! 2/5.
The scepter has its uses, in my shatter builds i sometimes use it for the high damage block, it could o up to 4k damage! but now they turned the block in a condition with lower damage, im not really sure if i like thescepter anymore, even though i never liked it. Having an off hand in a ranged set can be very nice though. The auto attack makes me feel clunky, the block is nice, the confusing images makes me feel slow, which is one of the worst feelings on my mesmer.
off hand sword, 4/5 The block does high damage, most people fail to dodge the phantasm. It lacks aoe though.
off hand pistol 4/5 Its nice for phantasm builds, but in pvp people dodge the phantasm very easily
focus, 5/5 Its aoe, its a pull, light combo field, projectile reflection, high damage phantasm, its my favourite off hand for pretty much everything : D
torch 4/5 It has a nice stealth, and the phantasm is ok in condition builds, but only for pvp on certain targets.
All healing skills get a 5/5, they all ahve their uses! ether feast for healing, mirror for avoidance and on heal procs, the mantra in mantra healing builds.
Decoy blink and portal get a 5/5, my favourite utility set for pvp, they all allow an insane amount of creativity and have a huge skillcap, theres nothing i cant get done with these 3! (not really, but you get my point)
signet of inspiration, mantra of pain, arcane thievery, null field, feedback 4/5. These all are amazing, but theyre situational! Signet of inspiraton in dungeon runs with a lot fo boons or wen im running boon support, mantra of pain with mantra healing, arcane thievery with 10chaos for pvp and stealing boons from mobs (jellyfish 25 might is a big example), null field in duels with alot fo conditions or party support. I wanted to make feedback 5/5 but its situational, whenever there are projectiles in dungeons it really shines though! I never use it for pvp.
mirror images 3.75/5, Im starting to dislike it more and more, its not thakittens a bad utility, but i just find other utilities more usefull, i only use it for big 25 vulnerability bursts nowadays, or when i dont feel like portalling in pvp. I think once you learn to use things like portal in your 3rd slot, it just really feels superior to mirror images :), its justmy oppinion ofcourse.
illusion of life, phantasmal disenchanter and -defender, veil 3/5. I sometimes use illusion of life when my team demands it or with certain boss fights to use it situationally. I use the phantasms for extra regen ticks, defender i used to use in the immortal mesmer build, but i dont use it often. Veil is for prismatic understanding and stealthing very big groups.
signet of illusions 2.5/5. I use it in phantasm builds when i have nothing better to use.
signet of domination, signet of midnight, all mantras except pain, 2/5. I only use domination in specific situations where i need the stun. I only use midnight when i have nothing else usefull and want boon duration. I only use the mantras in interupt builds, when i need condi removal like in swamp fractal or the 3 panels after the stairs in rata sum fractal, i only use concentration in jumping puzzles where i can get knocked off or something.
Mimic, what the kitten O.o? 1/5 It does… nothing… not much atleast. It does have a very cool animation which i use for screenshots :), this is really the only reason why i gave it a 1 instead of 0.

Heres a picture of al my settings, the bit rate is rather important aswell, and i see you didnt include it in your picture :o. I would recommend setting it to 13, the file size will be much bigger than if youd pick 8 or lower, but the quality shows

for some reason uploading to youtube always makes the quality worse… if i understand correctly it has a certain cap at how high the bit rates can be… but this makes me wonder how some people manage to get te quality much better than mine :/.

for gear i would highly recommend direct damage (power precision and critical damage), because mesmer conditions arent viable in dungeons,
but if youre still levleing, you should just try everything out and see which you like best

If youre looking to improve your pvp skill, the best way to do that is with practice! practice practice practice
. If you mess up somewhere, try to ask yourself why, and see what you can do better next time, see it as a learning moment!
another goodway, and a fun way to improve is by watching videos of others playing, and try to use certain tips and tricks etc that they use.

but then you find out the last survivor is equipped in full sentinels and they just run away and tank all your damage :’(.

It all depends on what you want to do!
In tournament pvp shatter is probably the best option for offensive support and roaming, but for close point defending a bunker build could suffice… but it was nerfed into nothingness last patch so i highly disrecommend that.
for hotjoin pvp anything will do, really
for wvw zerging you can use a glamour confusion build, but the damage output was lowered to… well, practically nothing was left.
for wvw roaming ive seen some people use phantasm builds, but im of the oppinion shatter is the best choice here. You have mobility, 1vsX capability, escapive capability and burst damage!
the 1vsX capability is really a must because youre just bound to run into groups of players while roaming.
Shatter has a huge skill cap, you can go full glass cannon and still take on groups of.. alot, under the right circumstances ofcourse.
But youll learn in due time

I avoid water when running from 10 invaders for thsi very reason.
but what is the chance 10 invaders chase me? If theyre a 10 man zerg theyre likely to get split up and i could kill them one by one, or just run away.
With all the stealths and blinks its not that hard to escape, as long as the terrain is good

Have you used the phantasmal swordsman before?
theres a graphical bug where if youve never used a weapon and if yoyure already high level, it can unlock the last skill in a single kill, but it actually wont be unlocked. Its like it has progressed to 100%, but for some reason the skill unlock system doesnt allow you to unlock a skill in 1 kill

Just try killing something with the off hand sword equipped, and it should be fixed!
Im not having problems with the swordsman myself by the way.
Time warp – glamour
moa – manipulation
mass invisibility – uh, also manipulation?
i think all 3 have its uses, mass invisibility is great for hot join pvp and solo or duo roaming, moa is usefull to burst bunkers down in Tpvp, time warp is usefull in dungeon groups… and if you dont use it, people get mad at you, so i guess we dont have a choice there.
But i do agree that moa is useless in pve and time warp superior in dungeons.
Well, first of all: i would be completely kittened for them nerfing another trait like that.
secondly: i would take 30 duelling in shatter builds.
sometimes when im in the mood i run 10/30/0/0/30 anyway, but moving deceptive evasion to grandmaster would jsut decrease build diversity even more :P
most conditions, like any other attack, can be dodged
. you dont have to cleanse them if you dont have them ;D.
When i run master of manipulation i sometimes take arcane thievery, if i dont i take null field, null field is especially suefull in groups

If i remember right i put the 10 from chaos into 10 domination for phantasm damage or signet mastery, depending on the party i put on healing gear, or my regular berserker/cavalier/knight mix. Things like banner warriors already have 100% regeneration uptime, so theres no point trying to stack it even more
.
Oh, i also recommend sword over scepter, you need the cleaving sword gives you. scepter only has 1 multiple targetskill, and its rather lackluster. the only time i use scepter is in boss fights where i want an off hand but still ranged, like greatsword/scepter, focus.

the 20/20/0/0/30 is a shatter burst build. Burst damage means you do as much damage as quick as possible when your opponent is most vulnerable, or just when you can hit them! The greatsword is good for sustained damage, which is not what your build was designed for, im not saying it doesnt work, because it does for some people
.
with the greatsword your damage timeline would look like: massive(shatter) – medium – medium- medium – massive (shatter)
but if you swapped the greatswordfora staff it would be: massive(shatter) – low -low -low -massive (shatter).
if i say it like this, greatsword mayseem like the best option, but let me explain the difference. staff has more defence, due to the phase retreat, chaos armor and storm etc. If you switched greatsword forstaff, you would get defence when you most need it, when your shatter (core of the build) is on cooldown!
To make it even better, you can switch 20 from domination to chaos to get lower staff cooldowns! While domination has more damage, chaos holds more defence. Both are viable, it just depends on what you feel more comfortable with

Oh, make sure you carry blink and decoy!
As someone said, you can watch videos of mesmersplaying to get a feel of what they do.
Always plan ahead, dont go close to someone and use a shatter burst if you dont have a defensive skillavailable! cooldown management is one of the msot important aspects of mesmering ^__^

Notice how i always have defensive skills available (if i dont kitten up) when i do a shatter burst. Right after the burst i teleport out, stealth etc. Try to get a feel of how long your cooldowns are, and try to use them only when really needed

ive had this several times aswell in Spvp.. but my Spvp gets lagg spikes in general since the patch, while my internets is fine… but even when im not lagging theres a chance my swap wont activate…
You cant balance illusion health around wvw zerg fights, there are plenty small group fights and roaners too, illusions would become overpowered if balanced for zergs.
Maybe it will be: get a random boon every 2 seconds in stealth, stealth skills last 1 second longer. Gain a random boon each time you take damage (1 second cooldown). Id still like it

If it was a manipulation and we could choose which illusions to swap with trough ground trgetijg and if it breaked stun then maybe i would choose ghis as my 3rd utility in a build where i have master of manipulation… Maybe though. Usually i put portal in my 3rd slot or something else inreally like.
If this skill stealthed us for 2 seconds i would put it in my stealth buikd for sure. But the cooldown would have to be abouts 45.
TL;DR: add stealth, ability to choose which illusion to seap with, stunbreaking and a manipulation fact, and id consider using it!

While i like the sound effect and explosion (its some variation to the things ive always been hearing), theres something missing…
Oh, i know: purple!. Id like it if they made the explosion purple, or magbe even use the torch prestige explosionn^__^. Thr explosions miss butterflies, too!

I like it! Im a mesmer and i never actually use my torch. But when i go exploring in dark places or guild puzzles, i like having my torfh equippee for fun ^__^.
I guess its inteded to make light when sheated, because its not actually on fire, i guess? It seems like a lamp to me. I guess an option to turn it on or off or brighter would be appreciated.

Sounds like you can just roll through your shtter skills without illusions or illusionary persona, and only get a 3.5 sec cooldown. If this were true, the nerfs we got suddenly wouldnt be that bad ^__^.

I do see my gear as high end gear, but the skirt is already unlocked on deer, which is the apprentice skirt, also known as the skirt you start with in pve! Its quite easy to aquire, but it looks really good, and thats all that matters for me ^__^.
One time i went on a naked hot join run without an amulet, so you can definitely use “low end gear”

I also really don get why people would dress in those tin cans and trench coats after they unlocked all the good stuff >__<. Some say they want to trick people in thinking theyre bad, but id never look bad just for an advantage xD.

There is not even a slight feeling of achievement here.
Im going to have to disagree here. In guild wars 2, unlike ofher mmos, its all about personal skill, timing, cooldown management etc. Wheras in other mmos you win by grindin for long enough, same with the pvp. Using an OP build while you grinded for longer than the other person will let you win.
In guild wars 2 structured pvp you start with max stats and all traits available.

You couldnt be more wrong there. Most professions have a huge skill cap, after 1500 hours of mesmering i still havent perfected my skills. Im pretty close, but not there yet

Believe me, theres nothijg more satisfying or “feeling like you achieved something” like killing 2 people by yourself. Yes, its more than possible. How? Practice, self improvement, but no gear grind.
In fact, my record so far is a 1vs6, it did take like 10 minutes but it was worth it
.
As for pve: someone could wear full berserker and never go down in a dungeon, while someone wearing full sentinel vould spend more time on their back than on their feet. Thats kind of an exagerated example, but things like this happen.
Personal skill determines victory, not having stared at the screen for longer than the ither person.

All professions are viable, even after this huge wave of nerfs known as the “build diversity”.
All professions have 1vs1 builds, they all have roaming builds and they all have builds that are most usefull in zergs.
I would say: pick whatver you find the most fun/appealing and stick with it, gw2 has/had a huge skill cap and youll keep improving with time

Hello, i was skimming through some old posts to find something, but i realised you have a question open!
Lately ive been very busy with my internehip, so i didnt get a lot of time to play or make videos, but i did manage to make one thats foussed on tournaments. I mainly supported the mid fight, jumpijg in and out, bursting targets and placing chaos storms and temporal curtains.
But at the very end of the video i also have a 1vs2 ;D, yes, its even in a tourney!
Sadly, its very very messy
. They were both using offensive amulets so it was over wuite quickly.
Things to note: i kind of panicked because trying to 1vs2 in a tourney is a very bad idea, but they were both glassy so it was worth a try.
When i downed the thief i immediatally applied pressure with the chaos storm, preventing the warrior from reviving! I tried making sure i damaged her enough before going down

Now i think of it, i also have another 1vs2 (kind of), that shows how to deal with a downed enemy quite well.
Temporal curtain, chaos storm, diversion, aoe damage are all very usefull when someone is downed!

Moa can be quite hard to see in team fights, especially if its the mesmer’s opener after fading out or enetering the fight…
Or they can ofcourse use it while stealthed or while standing behind you.
I agree, the animation is very obvious and easy to dodge, but if the mesmer lete you see him/her use it, then its just unskillfull use
