Mesmer should never have been made around clones and phantasms. This is a widely accepted view on many people here. Having a maximum of three AI pets attack at a targeted enemy once every 6-10 seconds with low health, moderate damage, insanely high cast times and having it count for the Mesmer’s total dps is unacceptable.
These AI pets have an increased factor of uselessness as they do absolutely nothing when the target goes in stealth, they self destruct when you or the target goes out of range, or even worse, just stand there, they don’t properly stealth, disappear completely when the target dies.

20% dps comes from each of your three phantasm and 40% comes from you, which makes PvE hell because your target is usually long dead before you finish casting your first damaging phantasm. New players usually won’t bother summoning phantasms at all because they usually do next to nothing. GW1’s Mesmer never had any clone trash at all, instead using something called “hexes” and dealing increased amounts of effects/damage for each hex.

Everyone has heard this argument before. But what they don’t realize is this clone mechanic that Mesmer is so reliant on is limiting design potential and limiting nerf potential to the point where Mesmer is so terrible at dealing damage in PvP and mediocre damage everywhere else, but Anet doesn’t know what to hammer and what to buff because everything is so tied together by this terrible mechanic. How do you make new future elite specializations without adding or subtracting from clone functionality?

Chronomancer elite tree barely scraped by as passable, and it had FIVE specific traits that deal with clones and how they act. In every trait tree that Mesmer has there are multiple traits that Mesmer could have had that specifically buff phantasms and not the Mesmer itself, unlike other classes, specifically ones with their own minions. This forces Mesmer to use the awful clones functionality that the developers could have avoided by scrapping the clone system altogether. The Clones should be an elite specialization instead or should have never existed. There is only so much you can do with three terrible AI.

Wasn’t the skill already nerfed to only prioritize squadgroups?

Imagine, this is what mesmer could have looked like without all the AI clone bullcrap. Sword/focus galore.

But anyway, that appears to be the t3 human cultural armor, heavy only. Sorry mesmers.

Core mesmer simply cannot function at all anywhere and if someone had the audacity to bring that core dps build a couple months back ago into any raid without Chronomancer I would guild kick them, not party kick.

I do wonder if the Continuum Split change will be too much work for anet on the technical side. It’s a lot easier to change a cooldown/duration/damage modifier/buff stack. Perhaps they’ll just throw a band-aid on it with something like a duration nerf on Moa.

Maybe some icd’s to chronophantasma and Illusionary Reversion. They still serve the function of mesmers not relying constantly on deceptive evasion for clone generation even if they have a low icd. But an icd serves to slow down how fast the shatters arrive as the mesmer either waits for ICD’s or opts for the 2nd shatter early but has to spend time rebuilding his clones/phantasms afterwards.

I wondered what all the hype was about so looked up metabattle, found the build and just patched it up with some WvW cheese(perplexity) to roam on.

It is horribly busted in small scale scenarios, Id had 0 playtime on this build when i started and the only 1v1 i lost out of about 30 fights roaming was to an exact mirror build that landed his moa b4 i did. Oh and a gunflame whereby i started the fight looking at my second monitor and the first i knew i was hit for 16k.

But for large scale conflicts the build is virtually useless, your clones/phantasms die so quickly in larger scale conflicts it’s hard to set up any kind of burst, condi or otherwise. The nerfs will come from PvP where there is some pro league players saying chronophantasma is a bit over the top.

But i think it will be ok because Condi reaper, Power Rev, and scrapper are all in line for a bit of down tuning as well.

ICD on Chronophantasma sounds plausible. I’m not saying it’s good, but it’s inline with the sort of nerfs Anet makes (i.e., tweaking numbers instead of adding new functionality).

That said, using wvw roaming as a basis for balance is bad. From what I remember about roaming there are hundreds of ridiculously broken things. Not to mention, wvw roaming is completely dead (organized dueling next to SMC is not roaming).

The devs only slightly care about wvw balance, and have zero concern for small-scale wvw. The fact that perplexity runes exist is evidence enough. It’s really too bad they don’t just make wvw use the pvp gear/trait system.

How would that even work, would it trigger the icd on one resummon or on a max of 3? Phants don’t all shatter at the same time you know.

Remember that mesmer’s last few nerfs have been 50% reductions on important things with no buffs to compensate.

• moa reduced by 5 seconds
• portal range decreased by 50%
• fixed a server crash

Blind was replaced with weakness due to the skill being “too defensive”. This change was absolutely uncalled for, the blind was supposed to combo with Ineptitude in the first place, that’s why it was on the skill. But no, Anet just had to remove all trait combos for all the wrong reasons.

More teams ran mesmer than teams that did not. The best teams ran mesmer, and i’m willing to bet week 2 will see most teams copying the composition that the last NA game ran.

As a mesmer main I can honestly say Anet did a great job with my class in terms of nerfing/balancing. We remain in the meta and not super OP. We can contribute in all aspects of a match. We as a class are FINE and need nothing.

If you can’t see this then you should look at the 3 classes that are actually hurting at this time.

Yes sure, we are not in the worst place, like guardian, thief or warrior. But saying mesmer is fine and needs nothing is just a joke.

I wouldn’t put too much merit into the OP’s position on this. He used the exact same “How many of this class in PVP teams during tournament?” premise for nerfing Revenants.

If Rev’s are so OP’ed like you claim because they were stacked in PVP tournaments … where are all the OP’ed Rev teams? Why did some teams defeat Mesmer moa combos?

No, I think what you do is make bad correlations. Just like the Rev isn’t OP’ed because it was stacked in PVP, neither is the Mesmer meta. People win because of skill and knowledge of themselves and their enemies, not because they play meta or stack classes.

I’m not sure if are up to date with the current events.

Also you might want to check where the reasoning of a profession being stack means it is over performing comes from.

Condi mesmer is by far best 1v1 out there right now and if you enter a 1v1 with an equally skilled mesmer (or even a little worse) then you will most likely lose and you’ll get your team outnumbered. Best to do is go back to the teamfight, wipe them and 2v1 the mesmer or get the other point and simply ignore him should he be so stupid to bunker a point. First off, condi mesmer is not a BUNKER. Do you know what a BUNKER is? Condi mesmer is a ROAMER.

Secondly, the primary damage of condi mesmer is confusion and torment. Mesmer’s staff auto crits for 600 on full berserker, crits for 900 on mainhand sword. This means if you stand and do nothing you will be virtually unkillable from the mesmer’s perspective.

Thirdly, since when was moa an instakill? 8 second DAZE? Have you ever been moaed before? Do you stand there and do nothing when you are a moa? Do you not notice your evasion and leap skills as a moa, as well as your massively increased stats?

If you drag them into a teamfight instead of 1v1ing them they fall apart like a bullet though soggy cardboard. Save your dodges for when you see clones going kamikaze at you and when you see a giant circle above their head.

The only reason mesmer sees play is because of the stacking classes rule and portal/moa.

Most classes have a passive that does this on having a number of condis on you. We don’t have that. Imo it should be a passive somewhere in the Chaos line.

I’m talking about the learning curve for new players wanting to get into mesmer because they saw the shiny seal of approval making it “as good as reaper or scrapper”. Then they drag down the game by queing into ranked mode for the first time with mesmer which they think will carry them the game but is actually dragging your team down.

I have a feeling everyone is missing the point I’m trying to make here…

Thanks for the explanation Pyro, but all I really want to know why it is even being played in the first place. When popular sites like metabattle brand something as “META” then you know people are going to roll that class and try it out in ranked, which horribly decreases the odds of winning to whomever qued up with that person. We all know Mesmer is a skill based class with a learning curve steeper than Mount Everest so why are people trying to hype up a build that is both hard to play and does nothing at all?

It does NOT work in this meta. Scrappers have insta cleanse, Reapers will simply throw the condi you make right back at you and Eles couldn’t care any less about you. Probably the only way you hardcounter someone is through Herald.

I’m not talking about forcing it on ME, I’m talking about forcing a build in pvp to be played by explicitly lying to the public to make them think it is actually good.

Why do people keep trying to force this build on others? It’s been proven time after time that it simply does not work with ZERO advantages over regular power shatter, yet it’s been given the black seal of approval of being meta on mettabattle. The only reason mesmer is ever used at all is moa and portal.

All I see is a mesmer using every skill he had to kill someone trying to spam aoe banner skills. If another person were to suddenly show up he would have been screwed.

If Anet ever hopes to keep up with their compeditors they MUST utilize dx11. This is 2016, you can’t have a modern game running on dx9 anymore. Dx9 was made in 2002 for Christsake. Having dx11-12 in the game would also mean that the devs could do a whole lot more with the visuals.

I meant a direct armor/weapon stat that REDUCES condi damage like toughness. While we are at it, the opposite of Expertise should have existed too, reducing condi duration.

We have armor and we have toughness for physical damage. Why are there no values or stats to reduce the amount of condition damage from sources? This makes absolutely no sense to me, especially with the introduction of HoT stats.
