There is no way to reliably tank in this game. And those berserker players wouldn’t be down if you were using full berserker to help kill the boss quicker.
You are hilarious and/or delusional.
And I wasn’t even talking about boss fights.
And CoF Path 1 doesn’t count.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
We don’t need any OOC speed buffs. I LOVE being forced into Centaur runes in order to only barely keep up with all the swiftness-spamming, signet-wearing, leaping and teleporting zerglings. I think not being able to keep up with the group is why I started roaming instead… and now, thanks to the phantasm nerfs, IC nerf and whatever other issues mesmer’s had to deal with recently, in combination with certain buffs other professions have gotten, I can’t even 1v1 as well as I used to… and if I do start winning a 1v1, guess who’s able to get away and who isn’t?

I often find myself playing the role of the tank in dungeons, front-lining in Knight’s equipment (with Valk or Berserker trinkets). It’s nice to be that someone who stays up to revive all of the facerolling ‘berserkers’ and ‘rampagers’ that are common in PUGs, at least.
…Anyway, it’s not even because mesmer is particularly good at it (every profession has a way to ‘tank’ and they’re all supposed to do their part of it in this game), it’s because noone else wants to. Big numbers, whee!

I tend to criticize fellow mesmers who moa me, XvAnything, because it’s probably the worst elite we’ll ever have. I’ve even killed some mesmers while moa’d thanks to the idiotic damage buffs ANet gave the skills Moa Morph gives you (you’re welcome, glass thieves. Ask on the forums and ye shall receive).

You can’t ‘contribute’ while you’re lying on the ground because you got one-shotted… and I can’t contribute while I’m res’ing you. It doesn’t really bother me in PvE, but in WvW, being downed constantly is a HUGE encumbrance to your allies.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
^Dawdler.
Those of us who make use of PTV, PPT or PCdT are tired of res’ing those of you who don’t. ;p
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Those of you who play thieves, warriors, and the “OP flavor of the month” really want me to stop playing mesmer. The more nerfs you cry for — and get, for some reason — the more I kill you with your own profession. It’s like you want to be further humiliated.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Slightly OT, pertains to mesmer’s primary ways to apply confusion at least.
- Scepter Auto becomes Confusing Images, but only hits three times and only procs confusion on the third hit.
- Confusing Images becomes a skill similar to what the auto-attack was — a projectile that, if it hits, produces two clones instead of one.
- Illusionary Mage’s attack is a beam rather than a projectile.
…would work for me.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
suddenly a high mobile class with stealth would be amazing.
Thief doesn’t need anymore advantages, Osi.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Mesmers – Can no longer use phantasms, clones, ports, stealths, or confusion
I had to laugh and call attention to this…
All aspects of mesmer gameplay listed above have been significantly weakened since launch at the request of, largely, thieves posting in the SPvP and mesmer forums.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Mesmer is mathematically the weakest profession and requires its opponent to be a complete idiot. End of thread.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Everyone on SoR has gone to bed mode engaged.

Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
kill the scouts first
This is really all anyone, playing any profession, needs to know.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
The only reason any glow is present at all on sylvari cultural tier 2 armor (for males, at least) is because some of what is already there is exposed. I’ve posted before (sort of) about this. All sylvari cultural armor should allow for all of the glow that’s already there to be visible through the armor, or the armor should have its own glow that matches the color/intensity selected by the player.
As someone who really likes the look of all things T2 cultural with T3 cultural body I’d be good with either of these options as I’m currently only able to see the glow on my shoulders/arms.

Curuniel is right. This argument is evil because it’s taking away my time. Let’s take away this argument so that it can’t take any more of it… :P
~walks away scratching head~
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Simple =/= “poor and naieve.” There’s genius in simplicity. After so many years of considering a thing — ‘good and evil’ included — one eventually breaks all aspects of a subject down to its root parts and comes full circle to very uncompelling arguments. From using details and examples to prove something… to simply understanding it and allowing others to achieve realization on their own… which is usually the best way to learn.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Not really. Killing someone in order to rescue the world would be a good thing in most peoples eyes, yet it means “taking away” something which, in with your logic, would be evil? Good and evil lies in the eye of the beholder.
You’re adding more complexity than necessary. The situation you described is simply doing something which is inherently evil to prevent future possible evil. Another important point to address is that a person cannot be evil. They can only do evil.
…and I’m working on my fourth year of college, which included honors philosophy in my second year. An education doesn’t alter logic.
By this claim, every single living being on this planet is “evil.” Carnivores are evil because they kill to eat meat, which they must to survive. Herbivores are evil because they kill plants and eat them, stealing the fruits and seeds to eat them as well, and again they do because they must if they want to survive. Omnivores are the same. Congratulations! You just said “life as we know it is entirely and ultimately evil!” And that includes you!
Nail on the head. I take it you have a problem with acknowledging that you are capable of both good and evil? The best we can do is maintain a proper balance. Just don’t expect ArenaNet’s dev team to handle that. :P

Oh, and good and evil are not socially defined. They are instinctual. Evil is taking away (things, lives, truth). Good is giving back.

The nature of the elder dragons always reminded me of… something.
Of course I know which of these two narratives came first… (EOTN/Utopia)

Inazuma clarified what I was hinting at. Sylvari come in many different colors.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Propose that Claw of Jormag be renamed to anything else so people will stop calling this lieutenant of an elder dragon by an elder dragon’s name. -_-
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
The sylvari are the fruit of the pale tree.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Really.
A ragtag band of soldiers/spies/scholars were able to chase an elder dragon, corner it and take it down.
And I thought they were supposed to be the big bads of Tyria??
I’m not so convinced.
One dragon alone isn’t a big deal, clearly.
It’s all of them together that pose a threat. Left unchecked, they will consume all magic and possibly what’s left of the world after that. Fortunately, they aren’t all active and aren’t consciously focused on destroying the world.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
No complaints that thieves can perform that same attack 4-5 times in succession? :P
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
What build(s) are available that would allow an elementalist to kite 3 people all the way from the northern border (on a borderlands map) to the southernmost supply camp while regenerating health in huge chunks the entire way, never taking more than 5% of his health in damage and without ever having the actual regeneration boon?
I want to know if it’s possible before I submit the video to ArenaNet. I have my suspicions that this player was using a certain ‘thing’ from a certain ‘elite’ site for ‘pvpers’ as he was also taking the time to stop and /laugh.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
BG ticked 400 ppt against IRON + KISS. SoR is ticking 400ppt playing against Doors.
You basically just said that BG is an EU server. How did that happen?
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Just got blindsided by a JQ asura engineer on “noob island” (sylvari mesmer) while trying to cap a sentry for daily. Just wondering what build you’re using that turned my 3300 armor and boon-heavy build into jelly. Granted 60% of my skills were on cooldown, but excuses aside… ya insta-gibbed me twice, and I’m levelling an engineer, so I’d love to know how.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
I love being able to switch in and out of kits at will. If they ever change that though…. cold stare @ Anet
The moment anyone other than a thief says they love playing a specific build, that build gets nerfed.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
I’m talking about sPvP, son. Not your PvE 100 percent+ crit nonsense.
But if that was pve 100 percent crit nonsense, then it would show “blahblah invader” instead of “Drfabulous and Last Frost”.
Wasn’t worth addressing after he overlooked that fact and called me “son.” ;p
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
I don’t want mesmer to be any more or less powerful than any other profession. What I do want is for its skills and traits to have some cohesion and to make sense.
It was the last profession added to the game, and it feels rushed and incredibly poorly thought-out.
Looking forward to returning to the game in a year or so when everything is settled and mesmer has had its total (and completely necessary) overhaul.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Short answer to the OP/subject:
Nope. All of our core mechanics prevent us from putting any more than 10 points each into power and precision and we are thoroughly discouraged from putting any points into toughness.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Going to play the balls off my thief until it gets nerfed, too. I suggest everyone else do the same. ;p
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Regardless of the OP’s intentions, ALL of mesmer’s traits and the stats granted by its trait lines need to be reworked. Torch trait in power? Scepter trait in healing? Phantasm traits in shatters? None of it makes sense. Every other profession’s traits are logical. Mesmer needs to be reworked. From the ground up.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
even more powerful with Berserker hitting like a truck (up to 5.3k)
loldragoon… er, lolmesmer.
sighs
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
If they nerf shatter and blurred frenzy next, we’ll have nothing left.
You know, I’d stop playing Guild Wars 2 altogether… and that’s no bluff.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
I expected confusion to function like Empathy. I still think it should. Bear in mind that the damage dealt by Empathy constituted about 10% of the average player’s health in Guild Wars 1 with all attribute points allocated to Domination Magic (similar to having the maximum amount of condition damage in Guild Wars 2).
Confusion needs either its duration or its damage to be increased substantially. I’ve been saying this since betas. The argument for this is that it can be removed by condition removal skills, traits, and fields. There is absolutely no reason for confusion to be as weak as it currently is.

Don’t go insulting OSX users just because you have some ridiculous notion about how they act. -_-
I hate to do this. Generalizations, etc. But it must be done.
I have only ever met two Mac enthusiasts in my lifetime that know anything at all about how computers work at a fundamental level.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
One HB will destroy a phantasm.
That said, be sure you remove Retaliation first if it’s there.
The retaliation built into my phantasm build in TPvP is my favorite way to kill thieves and warriors. Used to stack it up with Confusion as well in WvW, but that’s been rendered worthless. I no longer bother.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
It would be interesting if they added it to Mantra of Pain. The actual Mantra is “Agony, Torment, Pain!” after all.
Exactly what I was thinking. Mantra of Pain is uniquely uninteresting among the rest of mesmer’s skills.

Thanks for all of the bags SoR. You tried to take a paper tower and lost your T3 waypointed bay in the process to JQ. Thanks for the coordination JQ, lets do it again
Considering you’re the only JQ player who posts messages like these in match-up threads, you should consider transferring to BG where you’d fit right in.

Well, until they actually get some Mac support, a port to Linux would only cost them more angry customers
Linux users don’t get angry about things that go wrong with hardware/software. Mac users are special, delicate flowers.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
We’re facing a force 3 times the size of our 20-person zerg on TC BL. We’re driven back to Garrison from Bay, and then they simultaneously /laugh at us. Keep it classy, SoR. Keep it classy.
It feels like I’m always yelling at pretentious (or juvenile) PUGs about this. There’s no pride in winning with numbers. That’s something I stick by on both sides of a fight. I don’t yell about it because I think it ‘makes defeated enemies feel bad’ or anything. To the contrary, it makes us look like either bullies or idiots. Not that those two things are mutually exclusive… :P
I personally have more respect for TC than any world we’ve faced climbing up the ladder from near the bottom, and I’ve been Wv3’ing since the beginning (once I hit 80). I don’t actually remember which tier SoR started in, though. Someone can refresh my memory, I’m sure.

Let’s just have the Berserker use HB instead.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
I try to throw things against a wall before using Illusionary Berserker. I don’t always get full damage that way either… but it helps it not to miss.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
I usually /cheer @ mid-fight and hope they know I’m not patronizing them or mocking what they’re doing. I /bow @ when the fight is over if it ends in a stalemate or if I win. If I die, I try to target them and /join or /invite because it’s the only way to communicate at that point. ;p
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
Fighting against another glass cannon is the easiest thing ever. You just spawn your phantasms, and run in circles.
You must be getting matched up with some really terrible players.
If they try to burst you, you use blocks and blurred frenzy, and then they are dead because phantasms.
2 blocks, 2 dodges. Not enough for a 1v2 and risky in a 1v1. Plausible, but risky.
That build is the definition of overpowered in a 1v1.
Would love to test your build versus mine since there are only a few differences, but those differences are fundamental. One of the things I often complain about would be in effect, though: toughness does not prevent damage as much as power/precision improves it.
making them viable in WvW and larger fights
Definitely its weakness. Phantasms feel silly in Wv3 and some PvE situations. They die almost instantly in large battles (sometimes it seems like they spawn with 1 health) and even in 1v1 fights, people just run.
Nothing is perfect. Well, thief… nevermind.
Sanctum of Rall since beta 3. Mesmer since 1070 AE
I had my purple phase. Midnight Fuschia on Embroidered stuff at lower levels. Even had a purple glow. Always had my eye on a combination of ‘skin’-matched sylvari T2/T3, though (white glow now thanks to a makeover kit).
I probably look terrible to other worlds in Wv3 due to enemy coloring, but meh. It remains ambiguous. Purple gives a mesmer away, and I don’t want people to run right away. ;p
