presuming a certain party composition, methinks.

ofc. 2 ele’s in every group – 1 staff, 1 scepter LH. A single warrior for party buffs/Fear Me! A guard for stability/reflects. Usually the 5th is a thief for stealth/scorp wire/SS and, more importantly, higher FGS dmg/vuln stacking with FGS.

EDIT: Guard because this is HotW. I prefer not taking a guard, if I can possibly avoid it.

Gl killing him before he could leap if his first attack is such.

Fear Me! to the ice-wall slightly behind him and to his left. You can CC him with that before he leaps, or even aggros, and still get him to that wall before the fear runs out. 4x Fiery Rush, dead. 100% success rate in preventing him leaping at all, assuming the war doesn’t screw up the Fear.

yeah, those are fine. The one thing I don’t like is when applicants only have a warrior (and that’s the majority of them, which is very, very annoying). Since it’s only 1 war per group, if half the guild ONLY has a warrior, well then, there’s issues. I’m always astounded by how many warriors there are and how few ele’s. It’s as if most of the game still believes BS like “war best DPS in game. ya ya ya. 100b such high deeps.” -.-

This new release in China + the return of the Bazaar of the 4 Winds, I assume that LS installment will mean they fix up LA and return the target dummies to their appropriate spots. It’s better to go right first and then to the first boss (because of the door that opens after you have done all golem scraps). Take 3 points in Shadow Arts and choose Master of Deception. 2 points in acrobatics for the movement speed increase. Use smoke screen + shortbow blasts first and make sure that the NPC is stealthed too (this was the no.1 reason mobs were aggroed on me back when I didn’t know what caused it).

Take 30 in SA to also get Infusion of Shadow and Patience, not just 15 for Master of Deception. Retraiting is free and quick, so take all the help you can get. Might as well go 20 in Acrobatics for Quick Recovery and 15 in Trickery for the larger Init pool and Thril of the Crime too.

EDIT: trying to think of where the last 5 points should go. Maybe in Trickery for Long Reach. Yeah, let’s go with that. So the most useful CM p1 solo-thief spec for the first part is: 0/0/30/20/20.

EDIT 2: Something else I forgot to mention. When you’re stacking stealth w/ SS + Cluster spam, you need to set your Ground Targeting option to “Instant.” You also need to click your Cluster Bomb skill so it targets your location (ik, it kills me to click skills too, but this time it actually helps). You need to click Cluster Bomb as soon as the previous Area Stealth heart appears, meaning approximately 1 Cluster Bomb click per sec, no faster than that. You should be able to get in 6 Area Stealth hearts via Cluster Bombs before SS expires.

EDIT 3: Forgot another cool trick! Blinding Powder is a Blast Finisher, so for longer stealth when, for example, you’ve already gotten to an orange gear thingy and you’re spamming interact and the NPC isn’t coming and your stealth is about to run out, swap to d/p and use Black Powder + Blinding Powder. Boom! Extra Stealth! Then if you need more cause that stupid NPC got stuck on the way to you or something, Black Powder + HS spam against a wall (luckily most of the orange gear thingies are near walls). d/p + SB so OP.

“The PvP wep strength is exotic” – that sounds logical, but really, how do we know? Can you prove it? It seems like the way to prove it would be to use an exotic wep naked on the dummies in LA, then do the same w/ dummies in HotM of the same armor rating, If the average dmg is the same, then sure, PvP weps are exotic. But we can’t do that anymore because there are no longer dummies in LA. For all we know, we could be using basic wep-strength weps in PvP, and the coefficients in PvP could be different for some/all skills (we already know that some skills in PvP are different from their PvE variants).

“For LH weps strength, let’s assume that the devs have done a good job” – … uh, really? lol. I’d never take a dev at his word. (Insert “that’s perfectly doable” quote here.) Using mobs in Malchor’s does not seem like a great method, just because they’ll hit a naked, no-trait ele pretty hard, and they themselves have low health. Maybe it’s the best method we have available now, but testing w/ them is still a pain. What we need are the LA dummies back. Then all those different coefficients… maybe the armor’s wrong, maybe the sample size is too small, maybe the spread in wep strength is so large as to require a big sample size, maybe the stars just aren’t aligned right. If Anet gave us back steady weps and PvE target dummies, we could get everything sorted out. Until then, though, I don’t see how we can reliably theory-craft.

Testing LH dmg: In PvP, there is only a single wep strength (whatever that “normalized” attribute is). I can’t test how wep rarity/strength effects LH dmg post-patch, now that Player bundles (kits, conjured weapons, banners, etc.) will now scale damage based on the rarity of the player’s equipped weapon. Pre-patch, it was set at 969, according to the wiki (assuming that’s right – but why would it be?). Do I just assume that since normal ascended wep strength is approximately 5% higher than exotic, the post-patch wep strength of LH is approximately 1017.5? Perhaps LH dmg scales with rarity in a different way, but I can’t test it without PvE dummies.

If someone can tell me what the “normalized” wep strength range is for weps in PvP, I can do d/f. But I can’t do LH w/o dummies in PvE to test how LH dmg scales w/ rarity. Just assuming it scales up by approximately 5% w/o actually testing it doesn’t seem wise.

Anyone have an ETA on the re-introduction of test dummies in LA or steady weps?

Theorycrafting isnt for anything until Anet restores the LA testing dummies, hopefully in the next LS update. Who’d have imagined I’d ever look forward to the next LS?

My first toon was an Ele, and I followed daphoenix’s 0/10/0/30/30 d/d boon-duration build … in dungeons. He was all “arcana so pro,” I thought he actually knew wtf he was talking about … I look back at that and I think to myself “how did I ever believe this guy knew what he was talking about? I was such a naive noob.”

If you want to FGS everything in a pug, you’re gonna have a bad time.

The thing is, if your party’s DPS sucks, you using FGS is even more important than it is in a proper, zerk meta-build guild run. I’m probably the #1 fan of FGS (I stack 2 or 3 Ele’s and try to maximize it’s use in guild runs), so even the idea of not using FGS is just too terrible to contemplate. And even pugs know how to properly use FGS these days (the one saving grace of most pugs).

Having to do 200 pug fractals is terrible.

I remember seeing guildies/friends pug’ing fractals and asking me to join, and me feeling so sorry for them. … but not sorry enough to share in their misery. I’m content with hearing horror stories in TS and guild chat of the pug guard who didn’t use a single reflect at Fire Shaman; I feel no need to experience that ever again. Fractals with even a single pug who isn’t in TS is a recipe for disaster, a disaster I’ll be sure to steer clear of.

He must mean bjarl. And im surpised he doesnt know. That scorp wire is incredibly important. For the preceeding alpha, we use 4x fgs. Then we keep our fgs and I bait bjarl. He gets knocked back against the pillar, then thief pulls him back to pillar, and us 4 fgs him to death. Almost instant kill. That scorp wire is not “completely pointless” – its vital. And I was annoyed that the thief didnt do it even though I told him to beforehand.

Not pugging fractals is worth 50g for me.

I have great pity for Iris, Zoii, and all the other poor souls who didnt get every wep skin and fractal backs/rings for every toon back before the reset. Post-reset, spending so much time doing 4 fracs per PR lvl, coping with an instability, and continuously being plagued by Dredge all for 1.5g and no wep skin or just a PVT ring is the worst experience. And if you have to pug it too, it reaches a new lvl of terribad and despair. If I werent on my phone atm, Id link that story about fracs, by dolan I think.

Not needing to do fracs anymore is the best part of GW2 for me. So much dissapointment avoided.

Other suggestions include Stacker, Slacker, Whacker and Tom Bombadil.

I’ve taken away 3 things from pug’ing those dungeons today:

1) “experienced zerker” groups are NOT EXPERIENCED ZERKER GROUPS! If they are experienced at all (and they probably aren’t), it’s only in bad pug tactics. Most of them aren’t even zerk, since ping isn’t required. And forget about their builds – hardly any will be in meta.

2) Pug tactics are the biggest problem. Pugs do a terrible, terrible job of imitating proper speed-run tactics. So much is lost or twisted in translation from guild-run to pug-run. Doesn’t matter if the whole group is running zerk-meta builds and they ping gear, or they don’t ping gear, or they’re all in clerics, or whatever. The biggest problem is the deeply-intrenched pug tactics and a refusal to learn better ways of doing things.

3) Communication is an issue. In these “exp zerk” pugs, they all seem to know the default pug way to do things. If you try to coordinate something as simple as “who will use Fear Me?,” nobody volunteers, I’m guessing because none of them have used Fear Me! there, much less even knows how to properly use it. Even pugs have someone pull to a corner though, but most of the time, nobody says “I will do the pull.” More often, the pugs just stack in the corner and wait 4-5 secs until someone just magically pulls the boss for them. Coordination via party chat is virtually non-existent.

Conclusion:

All this means is that the zerk hate isn’t actually towards zerkers. It’s towards pug groups that claim to be zerk and claim to be experienced, but aren’t. Towards pug groups that use pug tactics and fail at communication.

So today, even though I’d already finished my dungeons for the day, I decided to pug a few of the more popular dungeons, just to see if pugs had improved. Guess what: they haven’t.

Every group I joined said “zerk” and “exp” somewhere in the advert, but they didn’t require a gear ping, and I could tell most of them were neither zerk nor experienced. Or if they were experienced, then only experienced in pug tactics, which as I learned are completely different from guild speed-run tactics. I’d forgotten that the disparity was so huge.

CoF 1: Mes knew enough to do the portal part correctly. But no focus pulling the initial 2 adds or the slave driver. No doubling might via Sig of Insp before gate, or feedbacking the last boss at the right time. I was on ele, and take a guess what the other 3 players were: Wars.

CoF 2: Mes focus pulls the slave driver to the wall, which causes him to bug via going invuln. He didn’t know the LoS trick that lets you FGS him without him going invuln. 1 person solo’d the Magg part, and the other knew enough to WP to start while that person unlocked the next WP. Semi-coordinated final boss fight; everyone got into position, then someone killed an acolyte and we all did the same. No “r” or countdown.

AC 1: Skipped Kholer, even though I said I’d FGS him in corner. The idea of killing Kholer was just too much for these guys. I waited until the last boss walked over to the wall before FGS’ing him, and 2 of the guys said “omg, fastest kill ever”

AC p3: They tried to skip Kholer, but came to the spot when I insisted we FGS him. 1 “omg so fast” comment for that. We had 3 wars in the group; at last boss, I asked “who will Fear Me! boss to corner so I can FGS?” … complete silence in chat… then I said “c’mon, we have 3 wars, someone must know how to fear!” … silence… then someone said “we stack here. I’ll pull.” So we try that; they stack on the wrong side of the wall (on top of the mound, not on the other side) and they pull the boss the wrong way. We wipe, since the way that they pulled the boss, my FGS couldn’t hit it. Then I tell them where to properly stack and I do the pull, and boss goes down in 2 secs. Amazing what a proper stack spot + FGS can do -.-

SE p1: Before we get to the boss, I ask: “Who will push? Guard with Banish, or one of the Wars with Fear Me, or me with LH 3?” …. complete silence. Then Guard swaps to hammer, so I assume he’s gonna Banish. Wrong! He starts AA’ing while I sit in the corner with my FGS thinking “WTF? I can’t even Rush if he’s not on the wall!” 2nd boss, guard pulls up WoR, but no stability, no Aegis rotation. On the last boss I say “let me pull with Arcane Blast, it has 1500 range, the 2nd guy won’t aggro.” So I pull him, then stack by the door and FGS. Meanwhile, all 4 of them are in the center of the room, and 1 of them says “pull him over here to lose aggro from other guy.” uh, what? Turns out none of them had ever pulled Tazza without Troop Commander aggro’ing as well -.-

CoE 1: I tell the group at the start: “we’ll stack in middle, in the left alcove. Thief, pull all the mobs with shadowstep, then put SS at the entrance to the alcove, then maintain Black Powder on top of us in the alcove. We’ll ice bow and LH.” Thief tries and fails. no SS, and patchy BP maintenance. We wipe. Nobody else had done it like that before and hadn’t a clue. At Alpha, I LH push to corner, but he runs away from me before the CC hits (never seen that before). Luckily, one of the warriors fears him to corner. On Golem, me and that 1 war are the only ones that interrupt, or know to stay behind him when he does his whirly attack. on Alpha, I put down an ice-bow, but nobody used it to get stacks off the adds that blow up before Alpha appears. They stack in the wrong spot for Alpha. I tell thief to bring Scorp Wire to pull Bjarl to pillar after he gets knocked back, so I can FGS him again pillar. No Scorp wire, no other CC’s at all.

I did a few more dungeons like this, joining “experienced zerk” groups (none of which happened to require a gear ping), but you guys get the idea.

Wardens Un-Sync'ing or Not Spinning

It didn’t used to happen to me, Sandy. Pre-April 15th, my Wardens always spun. I didn’t see them un-sync’ing in Arah or not spinning in CoF. But now it happens all the time.

I’m thinking the 15th’s patch broke my fixed wardens. >.>

Back before megaservers, I could get 20 world bosses done in 1 hr 30 mins. I’d have 3 windows of gw2stuff.com open on my 2nd screen, 1 for BG, 1 for JQ, and 1 for SoR/TC. I’d set them to auto-refresh. Whenever a world boss appeared (the main event, not the pre), I’d guest to one of those 3 servers and snag kill credit in the nick of time.

Megaservers have now killed that sort of lucrative world-boss farming, so I can no longer get that insane amount of rares + dragonite ore. Luckily, I did that 20 bosses-in-1.5 hr farm for months, so I’ve got bank-tabs of the stuff left over.

I pity new players though, since getting dragonite ore will be pretty tough now. The new mega-servers have done exactly the opposite of what they were meant to do: they’ve actually made world boss farming take longer, due to boss timer changes. So I’m all for helping them out by making dragonite obtainable in dungeons.

Sorry Lilith, I only say “Berserker” when I’m prayin’. Everywhere else, it’s “Zerk” (capitalized, like “God”).

I bet you’re so proud, it really sounds like a task that takes immense coordination and skill.

All it takes is a zerk, meta-build party and 2 FGS. You don’t even need 4. Or you can do it with 4 icebows/meteor showers. lol

Wardens Un-Sync'ing or Not Spinning

I was duo’ing Arah p3 yesterday, and at the Magecrusher I set up 3 wardens at specific intervals so the next one would start spinning as soon as the last one stopped. It worked fine for like 15 secs, then they all suddenly stopped spinning, and when they started spinning again, their spins were perfectly synchronized. Wtf?

Then in CoF for the last week, every time I summon a warden on a far-away Acolyte to kill it while I melee-kill a closer acolyte with sword, the warden I summoned never spins at all. Wtf?

I wish they’d just fix my wardens already. For real this time.

FGS in corner: sub-2 sec.
Ice-Bow in: sub-4 sec.

Those 2 secs are a big deal for me.

You’re blaming the skilled players for making players bad. It’s this exact attitude that’s just so destructive.

By taking this line of thinking, it puts the onus of why players do poorly… on the people who are doing well. It just boggles my mind.

@ Alice: You seem to be lacking knowledge that everyone else has. Since I’m a helpful (if somewhat conceited) person, I’ll enlighten you.

You’re criticizing Neko for not doing enough to help new players. Do you realize how ridiculous that is? He wrote a guide to help new players.

A lot of us “stacking-skipping-zerker-elitist-scum” have also done a lot to help new players. I wrote a guide to help them. I posted speed-run videos on gwscr.com that, if any new players ever bothered to watch, would help them learn efficient tactics. I’m a meta mentor in the official dungeon forum teaching guild. Many, many other players with similar mindsets have done the same things: writing guides, posting vids, answering questions, teaching new players, etc.

What I’ve noticed is this: There are a hell of a lot more of us helping new players than there are “anti-stacking, anti-skipping, anti-zerking, anti-elitists” helping anybody.

Well duh. Why else would you do dungeons, if not for gold? Doing them for tokens is essentially the same as doing them for gold, since you use the tokens in dungeon recipes (to sell) or for gear (to salvage inscriptions, then sell).

Well, don’t you? I assumed you were not a noob, since it’s quite easy to gear up right and speed-run dungeons. The strategies are all pretty similar. If I was mistaken in my assumption, it’s my fault for believing you to be even moderately good at this game.

I specifically said i rerun the same dungeon for the tokens. I’m losing tokens which I’d have to do 1-2 extra runs to make up for the lost token revenue. That is another 15-45 minutes depending on the path and pug’s skills.

The daily end-chest reward doesn’t just contain gold; it contains tokens. So if you’re farming for tokens, running the same path per day is still a very stupid thing to do.

And this also hurts people who (like me) only know and only run (by choice) 2-3 different dungeons.

You only know 2-3 different dungeons… lol. Learn some new ones. We even have a dungeon forum guild for that. Your problem is ignorance of different paths, so I recommend you try to remedy that.

No one was getting rich off the intermediate loot drops, so there was no need to nerf the loot drops since the gold reward was already nerfed into the ground.

The bots were getting rich. This nerf is a good thing for all of us non-botters who were already doing the intelligent, efficient thing (both gold-wise and token-wise) of running each path once per day.
